The Palazzo dei Papi di Viterbo, also known as the Papal Palace, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture in the Lazio region. Built between 1255 and 1266 to house popes seeking refuge in Viterbo, it features decorative stonework and frescoes that showcase its historical significance. The palace's elegant seven-arched loggia and a charming courtyard with city views make it a must-see attraction.
Beautiful and very interesting. The lady at the counter was extremely polite and patient. There is an audioguide included in the price and there's a lot of information you can learn about this beautiful medieval complex.

The Palazzo dei Papi is one of Viterbo’s most important monuments, built when Pope Alexander IV (1254-1261) moved the papal curia to Viterbo in 1257 and had the former bishop’s palace expanded. The palace includes the famous Aula del Conclave, which hosted the longest papal election in history, lasting about 33 months! You and get a ticket, and audio guide, for a very reasonable €10 which gives you access to the museum, cathedral and Palazzo. The audio tour is very detailed and a map is provided which shows the main points of the locations.

The Papal Palace in Viterbo hosts an exhibition that captures the first conclave (literally "under lock and key") that was held starting in 1268AD and took nearly three years to select the new Pope. That was Gregory X, who then ordered that the conclave method be used for future selection. It's very well done, including multilanguage commentary, VR, and animation to tell the story, and a must visit for History buffs and for Catholics interested in key stages in the development of the church.

The Palazzo dei Priori is a significant monument in the city, serving as the town hall and boasting a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Upon entering through its portico, visitors are greeted by a spacious courtyard featuring a striking 1600s fountain. The noble floor houses the private chapel adorned with remarkable frescoes dedicated to the Virgin and an exquisite Visitation by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi at its center.
Beautiful place to visit and dive into the history of the palace.

A great little museum - we practically had it all to ourselves! A cute house and some nice artwork to view. Makes you understand how important Viterbo once was. Staff were very friendly and engaging with good English. Audio guide limited but available, the pronunciation on it and number of items was not great. All in all a cute place to visit.

We really enjoyed our visit to this museum. Stefano did a great job making us feel welcome and explaining the museum. The two altarpieces by Sebastiano del Piombo were incredible, and it was fun to wander the building to see the beautiful frescoes and paintings on the ceilings. Church
Sagrestia del Duomo di San Lorenzo is a must-see attraction located next to San Pellegrino in Viterbo. It offers the most famous view of the city, often depicted on postcards. The sacristy's decoration was completed in 1795 with funding from Cardinal Muzio Gallo, and its medieval atmosphere will transport you back in time.
(Translated by Google) The decoration work on this beautiful sacristy was completed in 1795 with funding from Cardinal Muzio Gallo, then bishop of Viterbo, as also recalled by the inscription above the entrance door. The wall cladding is in walnut, while the decoration of the vault provides an accentuated perspective illusionism linked to the use of converging lines and the tapering of the fake coffers. The sacristy can be visited with the €9 cumulative ticket which also allows you to see the Museum, the Duomo and the Palazzo dei Papi.

Italy's history, and especially it's religious history can often whisk you back two thousand years in tome, and the Sacristy, part of the Cathedral complex does just that. A fine collection of early Catholic reliquaries and original marbles as well as a beautiful sacristy, professionally laid out by experts is unmissable for history buffs visiting Viterbo, the city of the Pope's, and home of the first Papal conclave.

Piazza S. Lorenzo is a religious site that revolves around the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, also known as Viterbo Cathedral. This 12th-century church was originally constructed in the Romanesque style but was later rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 14th century. Unfortunately, it endured significant damage from aerial bombings during World War II, leading to the reconstruction of its central nave roof.

The cathedral of San Lorenzo is located in the center of Viterbo, and it is considered to be one of the most important religious buildings in Italy. The original construction was completed in the 12th century, but it has been extensively rebuilt over time. The current structure features a black-and-white bell tower that is one of the most recognizable features of Viterbo.
A beautiful reminder of a period where Viterbo was the chosen seat and sanctuary of popes. It was peaceful and not at all busy when I visited so it was perfect for me. A single ticket allows you to visit the cathedral, the papal palace and the cathedral museum next door. There are also tourist audio guides which are great and allow you to listen to the commentary at your own pace.
Planettall — Google review
The cathedral is very plain apart from a couple of the side chapels, as when it was restored after the second world War it primarily followed its medieval precedent, rather than its subsequent baroque developments, Definitely not the most beautiful church in Viterbo, if you're short on time or money.
B — Google review
A Majestic Symbol of Viterbo’s Soul The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is a place that truly leaves a mark. Perched on the highest point of Viterbo’s historic centre, this striking Romanesque cathedral, with its elegant Renaissance façade and soaring bell tower, is a masterpiece of solemnity and grace. By day, the cathedral’s understated beauty blends perfectly with the timeless charm of Piazza San Lorenzo. But by night — as seen in this photo — it becomes something truly special: illuminated with soft golden lights, casting long shadows across the square, exuding a quiet, almost mystical presence. Steeped in history, this cathedral once hosted papal coronations and remains a powerful testament to Viterbo’s medieval importance. Step inside and you’ll find a peaceful, contemplative interior, rich with centuries of faith, history, and resilience. Whether you’re religious or simply an admirer of architecture and history, this cathedral is a must-see. A moving, unforgettable stop on any visit to Viterbo.
SUR E — Google review
Viterbo Cathedral was built on the site of an early Christian church (287AD) and reflects the early martyrs of the Christian faith, as believers were killed for refuting the pagan Roman gods. It's nowhere near as ornate as later Catholic churches, but with simplicity also comes beauty, and the Nave is a place for quiet reflection and respect for the past.
Patrick C — Google review
a beautiful blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, offering a peaceful atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection. The tall columns, crafted arches, and subtle frescoes add to its charm.
M E — Google review
The cathedral had a gorgeous ceiling although the building itself was surprisingly plain. There were the remains of some wall frescoes by the altar and one of the chapels had the best example of tromp l'oeil we'd ever seen. The bronze plated doors were impressive too. Entrance was included with the Papal Palace ticket next door.
Marcus H — Google review
The oldest records of the presence of a house of worship dedicated to St. Lawrence the Martyr on the present Cathedral Hill date back to the early Middle Ages. As early as 775 there is mention of a pieve of S. Laurentii and Petrus, its presbyter, and in a bull of Pope Leo IV (852) there still appears a reference to it. Full consecration, however, would come in 1192, the year Celestine III united Viterbo, Blera, Tuscania and Cencelle into a single diocese, insignifying the church with the title of Cathedral. Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, important interventions were planned on the layout of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, which, however, remained unexpressed (Antonio da Sangallo). During the 16th century there were conspicuous interventions on the structure.

Polo Monumentale Colle Del Duomo is a historical site that showcases the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The San Lorenzo Cathedral's facade and the marble baptismal font by Francesco d'Ancona are notable Renaissance features. Additionally, Michelangelo's Crucifixion in the Colle del Duomo Museum adds to its cultural significance. Nearby, Palazzo Farnese and Dragon Palace offer insights into powerful families of that era.
The museum is a part of a heritage complex that includes the Palazzo dei Papi and the Cathedral. It's very detailed and well curated and is split into three main sections: an archaeological section, with finds from Etruscan, Roman and medieval periods; a historical-artistic section with works from the 13th to 20th centuries; and a sacred section with church vestments, liturgical objects associated with popes, bishops, etc. Well worth the €10 admission, audio guide and map included.

(Translated by Google) Finally, for several years now, the gap of the lack of a museum that would make the riches of the cathedral and the Palace of the Popes accessible has been filled. Since I visited it for the first time, shortly after its opening, the itinerary has been enriched in terms of breadth and number of works on display. Now it is possible to visit the lapidary, the art gallery, the goldsmiths' shops, the cathedral sacristy and the conclave room with the popes' loggia. All accompanied by an audio guide (included in the price) which helps you immerse yourself in history. Centro Commerciale Tuscia is a well-regarded retail destination in Viterbo, offering a diverse range of shops and eateries to cater to everyday needs. The mall features a supermarket, clothing stores, and a bookstore alongside various dining options including restaurants, pizzerias, and tavola calda. Visitors can also explore unique shops offering high-quality jewelry and other goods.
They could do a better job of signposting the entrances, particularly the ones for pedestrians. But once in, the place is a state-of-the art, sparklingly immaculate mall containing most everything one could desire. I highly recommend it!
Valerie M — Google review
I recently visited the mall in Viterbo, and I was quite underwhelmed. Once inside, I found the selection of stores to be limited. Many of the shops seemed to carry the same generic merchandise, lacking any unique or trendy options. It felt like a missed opportunity for something special in the area. Additionally, the food court left much to be desired. The choices were sparse, and the few eateries available didn't seem to prioritize quality. The seating areas were often messy, and it appeared that cleanliness was not a top priority for the staff. To make matters worse, the customer service was lacking. Employees at various stores seemed disinterested and unhelpful, which added to the overall disappointing atmosphere.

Santa Maria Nuova in Viterbo is a medieval church with a rich history and stunning interior. The church houses precious paintings and ancient frescoes dating back to 1320, creating a peaceful and solemn atmosphere. Visitors are captivated by the magic that unfolds upon crossing the threshold. The cloister, composed of peperino arches, adds to its unique charm.
The only church in Viterbo that survived in its original medieval form the centuries and well worth a visit. The frescos on the wall still have vivid colours. The most interesting item in the church is the triptych painted on leather. But the stone pulpit on the outside, from which Thomas of Aquino has preached in the 13th century, is special too

I have a beautiful memory of Don Angelo Gargiuli, a parish priest who managed to revive the entire neighborhood in many facets. Unfortunately, his successor did not do that. One thing that needs to be changed, shared by many, is carrying the Holy Savior by oxen. Carrying it on the shoulders of the devotees would be humanly speaking much more correct, given that these creatures come from far away, making exhausting journeys. (Original) Questa è la mia parrocchia natale. Bellissima chiesa romanica, stupendo pulpito.

Chiesa di San Pellegrino is a historic church located in the medieval quarter of Viterbo, known for its well-preserved stone houses, original external staircases, and ancient lanes. The church overlooks the square of the same name and is one of the oldest monuments in Viterbo, with mentions dating back to 1045. While its facade was renovated in 1889, much of its medieval structure was destroyed during World War II bombings.
(Translated by Google) The small Church of San Pellegrino is located in the historic center of Viterbo in the square of the same name in the predominantly medieval neighborhood of the same name (12th and 13th centuries). The religious building is known through documents written as early as 1045, and was then restored over the centuries, with the definitive one after the Second World War due to the very serious damage caused by bombing. The façade of the church is developed in a neo-Gothic style with a gable roof, and we can consider it to have two orders considering two cornices jutting out from the top of the lateral pillars, connected by a pointed arch. At the center of the first order there is a monumental Renaissance wooden portal, which can be reached by a staircase, surmounted by a semicircular pediment, above which there is an elegant rose window. In the second order a rectangular bas-relief representing a coat of arms. The interior has a single nave, with an exposed wooden trussed ceiling, there are some traces of frescoes dating back to the 15th century. The presbytery dates back to 1945 with a bare and modern appearance, its altarpiece (from 1979) is a copy of the painting depicting San Pellegrino and Angels (by Vincenzo Strigelli from the 18th century) which was unfortunately destroyed during the aforementioned bombings.

Possibly nicer from the outside, as part of the square it's in and the whole neighborhood. Like all the other monuments/points of interest in the city centre there's a long explanation panel just outside. Some frescoes are still there too.

This historical church located in the square that shares the same name seems very picturesque, but is actually really charming. In the morning there's a beam of light that comes in the church and to the pews that is definitely heaven sent. A must see in Viterbo.

(Translated by Google) Although the Church of San Pellegrino is certainly among the oldest monuments of the city of Viterbo, so much so that it was mentioned for the first time in a deed of 1045 as belonging to the jurisdiction of the Abbey of San Martino al Cimino, today it retains very little of the original appearance. Its Romanesque structural layout was partly canceled in 1889 when a new neo-Gothic façade was erected. Then came an almost deadly blow in May 1944: during the Second World War Viterbo was bombed and, as also happened to other important monuments of the city, this Church suffered very heavy damage. It was reopened for worship only in 1951. And yet, despite the centuries and the men, a testimony of the medieval church still survives: a stupendous fresco, dating back to the 15th century, by an unknown author, depicting the Annunciation. Precious historical memory. Preziosa memoria storica.

The National Etruscan Museum Rocca Albornoz in Viterbo offers a fascinating journey into the ancient origins of the city, focusing on Etruscan archaeology. Visitors can explore the spectacular necropolis of Castel d'Asso with its tombs carved into the rock and visit Cava di Sant'Antonio, a narrow path carved into tufa by the Etruscans. The museum houses several works of art found in these locations and others discovered later.
During my visit to the beautiful city of Viterbo, I had the pleasure of exploring the National Etruscan Museum located within the impressive Albornoz Fortress. As I stepped inside the fortress, I was immediately struck by the incredible architecture and rich history that surrounded me. The fortress itself was a fascinating sight to behold, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as I wandered through its winding passages and expansive courtyards. The fact that it was originally constructed in 1354 by Cardinal Gil Alvarez Carillo de Albornoz, who was the general vicar of the Church domains, only added to its historical significance and charm. As I made my way through the museum's stunning collection of Etruscan artifacts, I was impressed by the intricate detail and exquisite craftsmanship that went into each piece. From intricate gold jewelry and delicate pottery to impressive bronze sculptures and beautifully preserved frescoes, there was no shortage of breathtaking treasures to discover. One of the highlights of my visit was the opportunity to learn more about the Etruscan civilization and its fascinating history. Through the museum's informative exhibits and interactive displays, I gained a deeper appreciation for this ancient culture and the significant impact it had on the development of Italy and the Mediterranean world. Overall, my visit to the National Etruscan Museum was a truly unforgettable experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Viterbo. The combination of stunning architecture, rich history, and remarkable artifacts make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in art, culture, and history.

Good museum covering the Etruscans very well. An easy visit for those not too museumy in that it is not too large. For me the key finds were the 2500 years old decorated terracotta roof tiles, far better than anything produced today and the small statue of Demeter dug up from the actual temple it adorned only a few miles away.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, also known as the Church of the Gonfalone, is a stunning Baroque masterpiece that was completed in 1665. Nestled in Viterbo, this church showcases an exquisite interior divided into two sections and adorned with captivating allegorical decorations. The highlight is undoubtedly the altarpiece featuring Saint Bonaventure, depicted in a moment of divine inspiration.
This wasn't even on our list of churches in Viterbo, and yet it was a very pleasant surprise. The doors were widely open and two men were giving free and very passionate explanations about the church and its peculiarities. You have to go to be guided (I wonder how often they are there) as it is definitely the best way to visit it. One thing: it's a baroque gem.

The Museo del Sodalizio Facchini di Santa Rosa, situated on Via di San Pellegrino, displays mainly replicas of the tower-shaped formation that is transported annually throughout Viterbo in tribute to the revered Saint Rosa. The museum showcases a variety of these structures, which are carried by a hundred men known as the Facchini from Porta Romana to various churches for blessings before being laboriously hoisted to their final destination at Piazza di Santa Rosa.
A must see, especially because it's free of charge and the staff is welcoming, passionate and knowledgeable about the porters of Saint Rosa and the traditional procession. Every question was kindly answered. Upstairs there's a fraction of a video from the procession.

(Translated by Google) Visiting the Museum of the Porters' Association of Santa Rosa in Viterbo was a fascinating and surprisingly engaging experience, one I recommend to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a unique tradition. Despite its smaller size compared to larger, more sprawling museums, every inch is carefully and meaningfully displayed. The space is small but well-organized, immediately conveying a sense of intimacy that encourages concentration on the details and the ability to truly appreciate what you see. The heart of the exhibition is undoubtedly the collection of scale models of the "Macchine di Santa Rosa," the imposing structures that every year, on the evening of September 3rd, are carried on the shoulders of the Porters through the city streets. Seeing these models up close is thrilling: you can appreciate the architectural lines, the creative solutions adopted over the years, and the extraordinary variety of styles that have characterized the different iterations of the Macchina. Some models display a sober and slender elegance, others emphasize an impressive wealth of detail; All, however, speak of the passion and commitment of artisans, designers, and porters. The museum's display of objects is designed to take visitors on a journey through time and tradition. The display cases and showcases are well-lit, allowing for unobstructed observation of every detail. Captions and period photographs help contextualize the models, transforming the visit into a living narrative, not just a static display. The atmosphere is welcoming and familiar. Despite the limited space, one never feels cramped: the thoughtful layout and the warm welcome of the staff contribute to making the visit pleasant and relaxing. Here, one doesn't feel like an impersonal place, but rather like a guest in a Viterbo "house of tradition," where each piece on display is linked to stories, emotions, and collective memories. In conclusion, the Museum of the Porters' Association of Santa Rosa is a small gem that encapsulates centuries of history, devotion, and civic pride in just a few square meters. You don't have to be a Viterbo native to be moved by the models of the Machines: just let yourself be transported by their beauty and the profound meaning they hold. A place to visit slowly, to breathe in the authentic soul of Viterbo.

Porta Fiorentina has three gates currently used for the passage of cars, plus two more at ends reserved instead for pedestrian transit: an imposing appearance which, however, the door has not always had. The structure visible today stands in fact in correspondence with an ancient door that had the name "Santa Lucia": it was only in 1768, by resolution of the Municipality of Viterbo, that the door was completely rebuilt, expanding it in response to the new needs of the city. In fact, the coat of arms of the Municipality is visible on the door, characterized by a crowned lion in front of a palma: however, together with it there are also the coats of arms of the governor Benedetto Lo Presti, del bishop of the time Giacomo Oddi and, on top, that of the Pope of Rome Clement XIII, under whose pontificate the works were carried out. The current, grandiose appearance of the door, however, is mainly due to further restorations that came carried out in 1886: this is in fact the year in which the local Cassa di Risparmio decided to finance the works aimed at improving transit and viability of the port. The two arches on the sides were therefore opened, while the wall was completely demolished.

(Translated by Google) The Ghost of San Faustino: the hidden legend of Viterbo If you walk around Piazza San Faustino in Viterbo at night, you might hear a soft whisper in the wind or see a fleeting shadow in the alleys. The inhabitants tell a forgotten story, a secret buried under the cobblestones of the square. It is said that in the Middle Ages a young craftsman named Matteo lived here, known for his incredible skill in working iron. Its gates and lamps adorned the homes of Viterbo's nobles, but one day its luck changed. A mysterious merchant commissioned him to do an extraordinary work: an intricate lock that no one could ever break. Matteo worked day and night, and when he finally finished the masterpiece, the merchant betrayed him, accusing him of stealing the precious material. Unjustly convicted, Matteo disappeared without a trace, but since then, on the quietest nights, it is said that his restless soul still wanders around Piazza San Faustino. Some swear they saw a metallic glow inexplicably reflected on the stone walls, others say they heard the sound of a hammer hitting the anvil, as if Matteo were still there, intent on completing his latest work. If you find yourself in this square at sunset, stop for a moment, listen to the wind and look at the lights of the ancient shops. Who knows, maybe you too will glimpse a fragment of the legend of Matteo, the ghost blacksmith of Viterbo.

Casa Poscia e profferlo is a charming example of a medieval house in Viterbo, featuring a picturesque external staircase leading up to a balcony. The dark stone and various elements of the building make it a beautiful corner of the city. According to local tradition, it was once home to Bella Galiana, known as the most beautiful girl in Viterbo's history.
(Translated by Google) You see it walking through the centre, unfortunately besieged by tables, bars and tourists. According to an ancient story of popular tradition, it was in the past the residence of the Bella Galiana, the most beautiful girl that the history of Viterbo remembers. It is not uncommon for the building to be remembered as "the home of the Beautiful Galiana". From an architectural point of view, Casa Poscia represents a small jewel, in the house one of the most characteristic and best preserved profferli of the city is visible. The building, originally only two floors, is stylistically and structurally similar to the houses in the San Pellegrino district. Casa Poscia was built in the 14th century according to the construction standards adopted by the architecture of the time, close to the Gothic styles that arrived in Viterbo after the foundation of the great Cistercian abbey of San Martino al Cimino. The Casa Poscia offers visitors a typical example of medieval architecture in the city, in which the solidity and clear spaces of Romanesque buildings and the Gothic decorative apparatus spread by the work of the Cistercian monks converge.

(Translated by Google) Worth seeing, not only because it is a typical house from Viterbo's distant and glorious past, but also for the urban context in which it is located. Pleasant to walk nearby. The only negative note: many shops closed; Covid has hit hard here too. Note the external staircase, called profferlo, which characterized the house and protected the room below from the elements; but also the "peperino" tuff ashlars (so called because of their dark colour) and the precious decorations. I also admired it in the early morning, with the sun's rays accentuating the light/darkness due to the overhangs. I had breakfast in the little bar next door. I don't recommend the croissants: hard ones from the day before and bottled orange juice. I attach the complete history of the house in the photo as it is indicative of many other architectures you will see in the city.

The rooms are a bit chaotic due to the nightlife of the place, full of small and interesting clubs. The host's service is decidedly full of gaps, little enthusiasm and presence. (Translated by Google) A structure that this year regarding the summer camp is unfortunately not like 2 years ago. THIS YEAR THE FAIR PLAY WAS NOT RESPECTED, creating discomfort for the child to stay at home without being able to go to the camp. An 8 year old girl PUSHED onto the basketball court, rough asphalt, at about 2:00 pm,,,14:15 there was no animator nearby to offer first aid at least,,,ice. Her older brother intervened to call the nurse, ask for ice that the nurse then disinfected the blow received to the knee. There were no animators on site at that moment, because the daughter was talking to me on the phone and writing me a text message crying that her knee hurts, then after many calls to understand how my daughter is, I spoke to the nurse who told me that everything has been disinfected and to stay calm. If a child is pushed for a ball or something else, offended and then it all ends up that,, SHE SLIPPED BY HERSELF" even if there are 3 children who are witnesses, well.....not 1 The child after only 3 days of attending the summer camp must stay home with a swollen knee from the push she received and after the x-ray another 10 days of rest with the knee. I understand that the entertainers penalized by taking away points, but this doesn't tell me anything because it could have been prevented by avoiding gestures that are not part of the FAIR PLAY RULES. Last year, since there were fewer children, it was handled very well, this year I don't understand.... Wasted time, because it's late to register elsewhere. Money paid and lost useless since my daughter only attended 3 days. The next day an entertainer intervened who observed how my son had already made the same move of taking the ball in a spiteful way (lunch time, not during team play).... an entertainer who luckily intervened.. Since some animators on my daughter's accident named it as SLIDE and not PUSH, it was not the game....but lunch time (13:00-15:00), ,,,that is, I would like to report that at that time there were no animators nearby.. This episode could have been avoided. The oratory should be like a concept of FAIR PLAY and not slides = pushes. MUTUAL RESPECT, OBJECTIVITY... Tempo perso ,perché tardi iscrivere in altre parte .
