Takamatsu

Takamatsu is a port city on Japan’s Shikoku Island. It’s known for the sprawling Ritsurin Garden, with a teahouse, koi ponds, landscaped hills and pine forests. To the east, atop Mount Yashima, Yashima-ji Temple offers panoramic views over the Seto Inland Sea. Nearby, Shikoku Village is an open-air museum with a collection of historical buildings from around the island. To the south are the hot springs of Shionoe.

Nature & Parks
Ritsurin Garden, a stunning masterpiece from the 1700s, is a must-visit destination nestled in the heart of Takamatsu. This expansive garden spans an impressive 75 hectares and showcases meticulously designed landscapes featuring serene ponds, charming bridges, and traditional teahouses. Originally constructed by a feudal lord over nearly a century, Ritsurin became public property after the Meiji Restoration and is now recognized as a National Treasure.
Definitely my favourite park in Japan so far. I was visiting different parts of the country for 3 weeks. The landscape is wonderful. The garden is well maintained. You see lots of different animals (fishes, turtles, colorful lizards and of course many different birds etc.). You can also buy some fish food. And watch a tea ceremony.

Discover a stunning park that's breathtaking any time of the year. Spend a whole day exploring its scenic beauty and relaxing atmosphere. Inside, you'll find charming eateries and a delightful tea house, perfect for a quick refresh or a leisurely sip. Don't forget, for just 100 yen, you can buy food to feed the cheerful fish, adding a fun touch to your visit.

It’s a beautiful park with many things to see and many rest areas for guests to get a snack and experience the zen-ness of Japanese gardens. I think that this one is better than korakuen at nearby okayama ;) a round trip within the garden takes about 1hour so pace yourself!

One of my favourite gardens in Japan! Not crowded at all but so well maintained and it was absolutely beautiful! I was not expecting it to be so big and they had a stamp rally that made it fun to go around and collect them! The teahouses were also lovely. Even the staff and volunteers were incredibly nice, met a wonderful volunteer named Toyota-san who spoke wonderful Englush and had amazing stories to tell!

It was better than I expected. The Kikugetsu Stay, which borders the largest pond inside the park, made me want to be there for a long time. The staff wearing kimonos guided me inside an old wooden house, drank tea, and it was an experience that made me realize that I had come to Japan. I went around every corner of the building, felt the atmosphere, and explored the space. I would like to visit again next time. 🌳

A very nice Japanese park, good for strolling and bird watching. A lot of people were bringing their long lense camera. There's also stamp rally going on inside the park, you don't have to collect all of them (there are 8 spots), you can get a sticker! The routes are very pebble-ly , might be challenging for wheelchair users. There's quite a few steps as well. There's also a tea house where they serve you green tea in ceremony style... and lots of koi fishes! They sells the koi treats for 100円 there's stick version (like ice cream cone) and the normal pellet too. Wedding ice cream is fun to eat too.

I decided on a morning run from my hotel to Ritsurin Garden, hoping for a quiet solo stroll. Upon arrival, a guide kindly offered me a tour. I was hesitant at first due to my limited Japanese, but the guide was incredibly patient and welcoming. We managed to communicate using a mix of basic phrases, gestures, and a little help from Google Translate. The result was a fantastic, personalized tour that taught me so much about the garden's deep history and exquisite beauty. It was a highlight of my trip—highly recommend accepting the offer if you get the chance!
Betty L — Google review
We made a reservation online weeks earlier for the boat tour at 9:30am. I originally thought the boat tour would take us around the whole garden, especially since it was summer and I wanted to avoid walking too much under the hot sun. But I was wrong, the boat only goes around one corner of the garden (though it is the most beautiful part), and it is not shaded. A hat was provided to each customer, which helped a little. The boat rower kindly explained the garden’s history and even sang an Italian song for us towards the end 😁 Still, I found the garden itself rather boring, and summer is probably not the best season to visit.

Mountain peak
Mt. Yashima is a prominent feature in Kagawa Prefecture, located to the east of Takamatsu City and extending into the Seto Inland Sea. Once an island, it has been connected to Shikoku Island through reclamation. At its peak, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Inland Sea and Takamatsu City from a viewing platform.

(Translated by Google) Yashima is a scenic spot that can be said to be a symbol of Takamatsu City, and we had a wonderful experience worthy of a 5 star rating. From the top of the mountain, you can see the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Takamatsu city, and the Sanuki Mountains. The sunset and night views are so beautiful that they have been selected as one of Japan's ``100 Best Sunsets'' and ``100 Best Night Views.'' The newly built Yashimaru has an impressive architecture that is in harmony with nature, and there are plenty of things to see, such as the scenery from the corridor and panoramic art. There are many Yashima Temple and historical sites, so it is also recommended for history buffs. There are also cafes and souvenir shops, so you can take a break between sightseeing trips. It has a wide parking lot and is perfect for driving. Yashima's appearance changes depending on the season and weather, and you'll always discover something new no matter how many times you visit. This is a famous place that you should definitely stop by when sightseeing in Takamatsu. (Translated by Google) Yashima is famous as the site of the ancient Genpei Battle of Yashima, but its pudding-shaped summit, a geological feature of volcanic rocks resting on a granite "mesa" (a type of rock formation), is quite charming. When you reach the flat summit, you're greeted by a stunning view of the Seto Inland Sea. It's worth the trip just to see this. As you stroll around, you'll come across temples, shrines, and Buddhist statues, and I was particularly comforted by the smile of Ebisu (lol). I'd also recommend this spot to anyone who enjoys this type of scenery. At the summit, there's a modern-looking promenade and a convenient cafe where you can eat, so I went there instead. There's also an old spot where you can throw disc-shaped terracotta tiles, which may be a good way to relieve stress. There is a fee. Takamatsu Castle Park, also known as Tamamo Castle, is a historical site in Takamatsu, Japan. Built in 1590, the castle ruins are set in a parklike environment with a moat filled with seawater. The area offers visitors a glimpse into the region's feudal past and features attractions like the colorful columns by Shinji Omagaki at Takamatsu Port.
The admission ticket for each adult is 200 yen. You could pay 100 yen to get some fish food. I think it was quite interesting, you poured the fish food into a pipe and the fish food rolls to the pond through the pipe. A lot of fishes were waiting for the food beneath the pipe end. Two pigeons were surrounding me when I was near the capsule toy machine for the fish food. 🤣🤣🤣 I think it’s worth visiting the site of the former Takamatsu Castle.
Karen C — Google review
A historical site of Takamatsu Castle near the sea. Ticket cost 200 yen for adult. Good to visit and there are many good photo spots.
Patthawee W — Google review
Very interesting to get a look at this partially ruined castle, where only two towers remain, both beautiful, but of the main keep, only the rock foundation at the centre still stands. It is noteworthy in a different way, rougher and simultaneously it appears like a modern art installation. Quite rare in Japan, the moat is connected to the sea, so fish and other sea creatures can swim around. The park also has a nice temple/tea house building, although currently under restoration. Great place to have a picnic.
Emiel H — Google review
Admission is only 200 yen, but I was disappointed to find that the main keep no longer exists — it is planned for reconstruction in the future. There are a few historic buildings on-site, but I was unable to enter them due to ongoing events during my visit. Instead, I was directed to a VR tour on my phone. It would have been an acceptable visit if I had gone expecting a park. However, visiting specifically for a castle and finding very little to see felt misleading. This should be named as "Castle Ruin" instead.
Ting H — Google review
You need to purchase a ticket at the counter to enter the grounds. However, despite it being well maintained, there's not much ground to cover here. Even the ruins covered only a very small area.
Tia I — Google review
This historical castle was part of the park. A small entrance fee was required. Two carparks were very convenient. The railway was just outside the park. Although the castle and other buildings were not so large, they were well maintained and worth paying a visit. The garden was planted with lots of cherry trees. Some seats and tables were available. Toilets were clean. This was one of the sightseeing points in the city, which was easily accessible with or without a car.
Joseph C — Google review
Immaculately kept castle and park. The moat and gardens were the highlight. There was even a boat giving rides around the keep. No huge crowds and very tranquil. Well worth an hour of your time.

20 mins from Takamatsu Port. (-)The ferry frequency needs to be improved. It is too limited. The island needs more restaurants, cafes and shops. (+)Very good place to visit as its very near. Not many places to visit but just walking island is already relaxing and enjoyable.

This island houses a mountain that is rather high. YES RATHER HIGH. I warned you. Do NOT rent a bicycle; you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT ride it up to the top, you may be able to drag it up and then ride it on your way down, but the scenery is great so you might as well enjoy your walk if you are a tourist(and went through all the trouble to come here AND climb the mountain). Alternatively you could get a motorcycle if you live in Takamatsu and come here from time to time for a picnic. But for that the island is a bit small. This is the famous site of the Momotaro legend of Japan and on the top there is the cave of the Oni. Not exactly an attraction but might help you enjoy the island... in summer, especially. It's really cool in the cave(I think it's air conditioned).

Udon noodle restaurant
Noodle shop
Waraya is a renowned sanuki udon restaurant housed in a reconstructed traditional thatched farmhouse with an iconic water wheel. The restaurant prides itself on using the highest quality flour to create the best udon noodles, adjusting the salt water content based on climate and humidity. Located near the outdoor museum 'Shikoku Village,' it offers a charming Japanese ambiance. Customers can savor kamaage udon noodles served with various dipping sauces, along with tasty side dishes like chicken and vegetable tempura.
Tempura Udon @ Waraya I ordered hot tempura as the temperature was cold but it seems this store specializes in Cold Soba! They serve the dipping sauce in a gourd shaped bottle that you uncork and pour yourself! Unfortunately mine was hot so it was served in the little container. That being said, it was nice! The udon texture was chewy and the soup with abit of ginger, daikon and spring onions gave it a nice subtle taste. The tempura was also good but you have to eat it fast or it’ll get soggy! Maybe that’s why people order the cold one. The food is pretty good, but I really like the atmosphere of the restaurant and the fact that it’s linked to the Shikokura Museum and the temple nearby. VERY good view if you climb to the top. I gave it +2 points for that. If solely based on food, it’s good, but there might be better. 9/10

Authentic place in a retro style. If you have allergies, be careful! I have an allergy card that explains my seafood and fish allergy. I showed it to the cashier at the counter, and she said it would be okay if I ordered simple udon without toppings. But in fact, I could only eat the noodles, because the broth was made with dashi and bonito. Thankfully, the noodles and the broth were served separately. If you don’t have issues like food allergies, I think you’ll really enjoy this place. It has a nice atmosphere and a very attentive elderly waitress who tries her best to help with everything.

Nice view and nice udon! We arrived at 10:30am and we were assigned to a table with nice view. I ordered the cold udon which is very tender and tasty. The tempura chicken and tempura shrimp are also good.

Just the experience of eating in a building that looks like this is amazing. We got the zaru udon, the udon was perfectly thick and chewy, and the service was quick and pleasant.

Amazing place, great food for great price. Udon noodles 🍜 were amazing, ordered cold version as summer here is brutal, the texture of noodles was amazing, tempura super crunchy and sauce very tasty. Atmosphere is super nice due to architecture of the building. Services as everywhere in Japan the best.

This udon shop should have much higher ratings, it’s in a super-interesting location, service is great, and the udon delicious. We had both hot and cold with shrimp tempura. Lots of seating. Certainly the place to go if you’re visiting the Shikoku Mura museum.
Barnaby S — Google review
Decent Udon place inside a charming old farmer building. The restaurant is located right next to the outdoor museum "Shikoku Village" and boasts having some of the best Udon noodles in the country. We had a serving of cold and of hot Udon with some dipping sauce, as well as chicken and vegetable tempuras. The Udon had a great consistency (a bit firmer than what you are usually getting) and the dipping sauce tasted nice. The tempura was alright but nothing outstanding. Pricewise, you pay a bit more than at your average Udon place but overall you can definitely get a cheap meal there. Additionally, they offer some truly massive serving sizes. As there are not that many places around, if you happen to be in the area definitely give Waraya a try.
Christian B — Google review
Came here after the open air museum to eat some udon and I'm glad I did! The set up is like quick service where you order and pay before being seated. The we got the large shared udon bowl and some karaage. Both were tasty, but I was still a bit shocked at how big of a portion you get for two people. I can't imagine how many noodles they give you for the super sized portion. They give you a sizzling hot container of dipping sauce for your udon and it's a little sketchy pouring it out, but it works well enough. Overall, good service and great food, definitely come here to eat if you're already coming for the museum.

Udon noodle restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Udon Baka Ichidai is a popular udon specialty restaurant known for its freshly made noodles and thick broth. The cafe-style seating and simple ambiance add to the charm of this local establishment, which has been featured in various media outlets. One of their standout dishes is the kama butter udon, where the noodles are coated with egg and butter, topped with black pepper for a unique flavor reminiscent of carbonara.
udon is pretty much great everywhere you go in this town, but Baka-ichidai takes it up to another level!!! the taste is amazing and all the previous comments are both helpful and true. the communal eating style adds an extra layer of comeraderie to. an already tasty meal. Try to get there well before you are hungry.... there is often a line of people waiting to eat.

Solo Eating When I arrived around Lunchtime, the line was long. I waited up to 90min before I got in. Udon Baka Ichidai is a self service restaurant where u order the main dish from the cashier and pick the side dishes yourself. 1. Wait in line 2. Grab a tray and a cup once you're inside. 3. Order the noodle dish. They have an English menu by the fridge. Pick the size, you have the option of 1x, 2x & 3x. 4. Grab whatever side dish that's available on the day. 5. Pay Despite freezing, holding in the urge to pee while waiting in line for 90min, it was all worth it. The staff don't speak fluent English but they're quick to help even on a busy day. I recommend ordering their signature dish for the first time: Hot Kama Butter Udon Noodles with Black Pepper & raw egg. I ordered that in 1x size. While it was delicious, I regret not ordering a bigger size. The next time I'm in Japan, I'm definitely coming back for more.

There is some truth to the claim that tourists prefer kamatama udon at Sanuki udon shops in Kagawa Prefecture. The reason is simple. Kama-tama udon is popular with tourists because it looks simple and is both Instagram-friendly and easy to eat. Locals, on the other hand, tend to prioritise the firmness of the noodles and the flavour of the broth, preferring menu items such as kake udon, bukkake udon or zaru udon. Therefore, this shop, which features unorthodox menu items like kama butter as its signature dish, caters to tourists and isn't popular with the locals. If you consider this a shrewd strategy, then it is exactly that. I visited this much-talked-about and rather unusual udon shop just after 11am, and it was already almost full. I decided to try their famous butter kama-age udon, which took about nine minutes to prepare, so I passed the time by eating some tempura. Unfortunately, the dish itself was very disappointing. It tasted like Japanese carbonara, but it made me feel nauseous and I struggled to finish it. The shop itself looked quite shabby, with a cluttered open kitchen that gave off more of a local eatery vibe. Strangely, while the building itself felt worn and unkempt, the walls were neatly lined with framed autographs of celebrities, creating an odd mismatch. It seemed as though the restaurant valued the autographs more than the food or the customers. Prices were on the high side and ordering tempura or karaage would quickly push the bill close to 2,000 yen. Compared to typical Sanuki udon, the noodles here were limp and lacked the firm texture one would expect. It seems that the business thrives more on its celebrity-driven reputation and ample parking spaces for out-of-town visitors than on the quality of its food. I doubt many locals come here. The service wasn't unfriendly, but it added to the disjointed atmosphere: a young woman with dyed hair greeted customers in a fast-food style, a young man clumsily worked the udon dough at the back, and an elderly woman handled the register carelessly. It left me wondering where the true spirit of this shop had gone. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. Perhaps, though, on another occasion I might give it one more try with a simpler dish, such as bukkake udon, to see if I can discover the essence of good Sanuki udon here.

The Mog Champ sends his regards. Apparently one of the most popular udon shops in Takamatsu and Kagawa is known for their udon. I made my way here after visiting Ritsurin Garden and arrived around 1:30pm. By the time I got inside it was already 2:30pm! I knew what I expected from seeing the line so it's fine. The shop inside wasn't that big so that's why the line could pile up easily but they serve the udon extremely fast! I think I ordered a medium or large kama butter udon which is their popular signature and I have to admit, finishing this was definitely difficult! For a Japanese large-sized portion, I didn't expect it to be so much to be served out. It was extremely delicious but at the same time - I may have put too much in my stomach that afternoon! It was good udon compared to most udon restaurants out there. Thanks for the lunch Udon Baka Ichidai! I hope many other customers can be satisfied with the amazing udon you guys make too! Mogliest Regards, Your Mog Champ

Got a table very quickly just after 1pm Tuesday. The service deserved 6 stars, everything was easy to order despite me not speaking Japanese. The black pepper and butter noodles indeed tasted beautiful. Medium was a very generous size for me. Udon noodle restaurant
Udon Okajima Takamatsu is a popular udon shop located near Takamatsu Station. The shop's specialty lies in the texture and flavor of its Sanuki no Yume wheat-based noodles, paying close attention to temperature management and freshness throughout the noodle-making process. Customers have praised the almost transparent soup with deep flavors that complement the smooth noodles. The spacious store tends to get crowded during lunch hours, mainly with locals, indicating its popularity among residents.

Very crowded during lunch time (12:00 - 13:00). Mostly local people eating, which is always a good sign. Need to know how to order. The shop is completely self service. I had the kama tama with meitai (釜たま明太子). Personally, I felt it was too salty. Otherwise, it’s good udon.

(Translated by Google) Kamaage Udon Okajima Takamatsu Branch My territory is Takamatsu City, so today I had breakfast udon around Takamatsu Station for the first time in a while. Okajima is part of the Yushokubouya (Japanese cuisine) group, and its Marugame branch is so popular it was even selected as one of Tabelog's Top 100 KAGAWA Udon Restaurants. I had the impression that this self-service restaurant offered a wide variety of fried foods, but what really surprised me was the size of the chicken tempura. Kamaage udon for 380 yen, chicken for 220 yen, for a total of 600 yen (tax included) - isn't that just too cheap? The broth is served in a sake bottle, which is a blessing, as you can add more if it gets diluted and it doesn't get too cold. The flavor is strong, typical of self-service restaurants, but adding ginger and green onions to remove the unpleasant flavors would make it even more palatable. The chicken tempura was impressive, and in terms of size alone, it might be the best in Kagawa. While most udon noodles are thinly rolled and coated in batter, this one has a substantial thickness and a Japanese-inspired flavor. Slice up some chicken, top a large serving of rice with grated daikon radish, and pour over the dashi broth (it'll make the beef bowl restaurant next door weep). A local restaurant with the best quality food. The freshness of sashimi is the best.

The signature べぇすけ鍋 totally exceeded my expectations. The conger eel (穴子) was full of rich flavor, and the broth was deep and satisfying. (It was so good that I didn’t remember to take photos) The interior of the restaurant is very traditional, offering a perfect setting to savor local cuisine. I can’t wait to be returning for another memorable meal

Chicken restaurant
Izakaya restaurant
Yoridorimidori is a popular restaurant in Takamatsu known for its specialty of black pepper-rubbed and roasted chicken legs. The young chicken is highly recommended for its tenderness and juiciness, while the mature chicken is said to be chewy. The chickens are sourced from Kagawa and butchered in the morning, ensuring freshness. The restaurant offers a variety of small dishes that pair well with their wide selection of alcoholic drinks.
We arrived at around 7pm on Saturday, and lined up for around 15mins before getting a seat. If you haven't tried the chicken with bones, I'd recommend trying a mature chicken rather than the young chicken. The young chicken still tasted good, but not as special as the mature chicken. The mature chicken leg is very chewy (but definitely not too hard to swallow) and have a much richer flavour. It is different from conventional chicken legs that we can get elsewhere. For the side dish, I recommend the black soybean.

Good place to try out the local specialty food of Takamatsu. I got young chicken (wakadori) because I saw other people eating the old chicken, the meat is so tough that it requires a scissors to split it. The young chicken is very tender and the grilled part is seasoned with black pepper. The meat seems marinated as it doesn't taste bland without the grilled layer. The design of the shop is pretty interesting and the staff were nice. They also have English and Chinese menu, the Japanese menu looks very traditional so its a bit hard to understand what's on the menu. The chicken and a beer cost me 1600 yen, not bad a deal! Dined on 31 Mar 2025

Great in-bone chicken, tender and juicy. We went on a Friday night at 8 pm and had to wait a pretty long time as it was really busy. The service was a bit too slow, by the time we received the chicken we were already done with our drinks. Overall recommended, it is worth to wait a bit

I have never tasted chicken so tender. Chose the YOUNG CHICKEN over the MATURE CHICKEN as it was juicy and tasty and grilled to perfection - slightly crispy on the outside and oozing with freshness inside. All chicken are Kagawa-grown apparently and butchered only in the morning. The other small dishes were great to go with the alcoholic drinks available - and quite a wide range if I might add. Came back twice already!

all the dishes are good. the young chicken leg is so juicy and soft but it may be too salty for some people. quite a lot of people lines up after 7pm so remember to go earlier.

We love here so much that we came for two days out of our three-days-only trip! I recommend choosing wakadori (young one) for the roasted chicken. Also, the salmon chatsuke plus the torimeshi (chicken rice) are all good. The roasted chicken is a must-try dishes here in Takamatsu. It’s totally worth it;)

If you are around Takamatsu besides udon you have to try chicken, we saw a line in this place in their famous shotengai and decided to eat there, took us 20 min to get a table since there was a line. Service was not fast but very attentive and the chicken was so good, with menu in English, I recommend young chicken among mature one and as a starter if you dare try raw octopus sashimi with wasabi it was so tasty
