Kurume

Kurume is an inland city on Japan’s Kyushu Island. Beside the Chikugo River, the Suiten-gū Shrine is a complex of temples dedicated to the water gods. Museums
The Kurume City Art Museum is a peaceful museum located in serene gardens, showcasing the works of renowned Western-style artists from the region. Though it may not be very large, its exhibitions are impressive and constantly changing, ensuring visitors always have something new to see. In addition to the art museum itself, there is also a library on site for visitors to peruse.
This is such a lovely garden! It is full of flowers, fountains, ponds, waterfalls, bridges, los of koi and a swan. Japanese really know how to do gardens.

The show about Indigo was well curated. The gardens are well maintained.

There's a huge fountain in the center of the yard. Quiet and peachful just watching the beautiful yard and flower garden. The art museum is not very big, but the exhibition is quite good and them change themes from time to time, so there's always something new to see. Lovely place.

Mr.Obana, His "Chikugo River Series" (his masterpiece), "Sea Series" featuring the sea of Kunitachi Peninsula, "Music Series" in which he attempted to visualize sound, and "Red Series" in which he stripped down the form to the minimum are just a few of the highlights. Highly recommended.

The exhibition was not so impressive, but i could easily understand this museum plays an important role in the city.

Good museum, would be better with signage to parking which is shared with community center. Also no water fountain in building.
Yuan L — Google review
Lovely place to enjoy the well-kept garden and landscaping, the art museum and the library. The only problem is the limited parking space AND the dangerous turn you need to make to get in and out (library side parking).

Buddhist temple
Place of worship
Daihonzan Naritasan Kurume Temple is one of the notable temples in Kurume, Japan. The temple features various majestic sections and is recommended for a three to four-hour visit to fully appreciate its beauty. Visitors can make wishes to the temple monks and receive gifts to bring home. The modern Buddhist temple boasts a building inspired by India's Maha Bodhi temple and houses a giant Kannon statue.
Very welcoming place. The temple's various sections are majestic & beautiful; worthy of praise. If you come here, give yourself t least three or four hours to fully enjoy it, because there is so much to see! Making a wish to the temple monks & receiving the gift to post in a high place in your home was the greatest part. I wished for myself a long & healthy life and for world peace/no more war. After departing the temple, I felt so good/blessed. It was definitely worth it. By the way, bring lots of ¥ change with you, because there is many opportunities to give to the temple and it is ¥5,000 tom make two wishes to the temple monk(s). 🛕 Good luck, everyone!

Its a simple shrine. But extreme. You can go inside the statue tru the back. It has 283steps up i believe. Im not yet exhausted. I came here alone so I will come here again because i did not went to the Hell and heaven passage 😅 a bit scary. Entrance fee: 500¥ adult Until : 17:00 Visited: sept 6,2025

500¥ to get in. Not worth climbing the stairs up to the top of the statue as there is very little view. The basement however is very interesting, and you can even go to hell 🤭
Beatrice T — Google review
Amazing place! You will need to pay to access the statue area but it is only $5 and you can walk to the top of the statue and there is a museum under it too. They have information about the statue in English too. There are viewing windows inside the staute where you can get a good view of the city. You are allowed to open the windows.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
KOURATAISHA is a significant Shinto shrine in the Chikugo region that has undergone several years of restoration. The shrine boasts an imposing structure with a thatched roof and intricately carved wooden ceiling, surrounded by colorful azalea trees. Visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of Kurume city from the top, which is easily accessible by car or hiking.
It’s beautiful, but for hiking ( 30-40mins). The road leads to the shrine is very peaceful, and so nice. In the moutain, view is nice, but not great. We want to wait until the street light turn on. We wait from the sunset (5pm ) until it got dark (6pm) then we asked and knew that the lights only turned on 7pm. And u know, we are tourist, so we dont have car, we had to go hiking back to the station. When there was dark and no light, it’s so difficult to go down stairs in the forest. Luckily, there was another tourist friends also returned to the station and we walked together in the dark. We hope that light could be on sooner. And the transportation here could be better next time. ( we tried to book uber but there’s no uber. and the bus to the station is not available much often after 7pm)
Ngoc L — Google review
I visited Koura Taisha Shrine on a Friday in August 2025, right in the summer heat. It was super peaceful—just a few foreigners and some locals resting after hiking up the mountain. The road is winding and small, adding a sense of adventure on the way up. The stairs to the shrine are steep and a bit of a workout, but you can take a lift if you’d rather skip the climb. Along the way, you pass traditional wooden buildings and smaller shrines that give the whole area a really authentic, serene vibe. At the top, the main shrine is beautiful, and you can offer a prayer if you’re interested in Shinto traditions. The viewing deck nearby offers a sweeping panorama of Kurume City and the surrounding hills. I bet it’s especially stunning in spring with cherry blossoms or in fall when the leaves turn golden.

I planned to come see the temple and see the city's night lights and the decorative lamps along the way up, but the decorative lamps along the way up were not turned on. I'm not sure if the decorative lamps along the way up are turned on every day.

Highly recommend for travellers who will rent a car in fukuoka. Very nice shrine in the area, and it is close to Tosu outlet, and in between Kumamoto and Fukuoka, good spot in between.

A very beautiful and peaceful shrine. We visited it in the early hours of the morning and the air was fresh and invigorating. The atmosphere was silent but full of promises. I recommend taking the family here for a visit.
Sue W — Google review
The buildings are built as if they were assembled from blocks of wood and do not use nails. This is a way of avoiding collapse in earthquake-prone Japan. It is wonderful to see this technique, called KIGUMI, up close. At Kora Taisha, lanterns are lit only in August; August 29, 2025
Y H — Google review
Posting my experience so you can learn from my mistakes lol my friend and I visited this shrine around 4pm, it took us an hour to get to the top. You go through some streets in a small college town (lots of students) then pretty much it’s residential and super quiet. Google Maps will have you go through the forest with lots of rock steps and it’s shady. Kinda scary if you’re just alone lol. This path will take you straight to the shrine but if you take the road way instead on the left, it’ll take you to the bottom of the stairs of the shrine instead. It’s a bit longer but easier. There are no lights until August! And no taxis but there was a taxi driver waiting for a passenger because they called ahead. I recommend doing that. Overall the shrine is beautiful and the views is amazing. You get a sense of victory getting there.

Cultural center
Museums
The Ishibashi Cultural Center is a hub of cultural activity, boasting an array of artistic amenities and meticulously maintained outdoor spaces. Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences, including strolling through the beautiful gardens complete with rose garden and fountain or exploring the impressive children's library. The center also features a music hall and museum for those seeking further cultural enrichment.
Such a wonderful park, free entrance too! Famous for having a lot of flowers. Supposed to be near hydrangeas season now but was there too early and the flowers were not in full bloom yet. There is a rose garden and there are so many varieties of roses. Even though the roses were not in peak bloom, they were still insanely gorgeous! There are other gardens for other plants too, but they were not in season. There is a big lake, with a swan, and many fishes. The area surrounding the lake was wonderful. You can spend hours here just enjoying the peaceful and beautiful park, strolling along the paths and around the lake. The area is quite big.

This quickly became one of my favorite parks in all of Japan. From the message at the entrance, beautiful statues, fountain, seasonal flowers, and museum, this place was so relaxing. Everyone there was very friendly and we even had a kind older woman come up to talk with us, and later she found us and gave us discount tickets to the art museum! There was a small festival, with some food booths and a jewelry stand as well. I don’t know who is in charge of choosing, planting, and arranging the flowers, but they deserve a raise because everything was beautiful. I wish I lived nearby so I could spend more time here and experience the different seasons. The park itself is free, and they have some paid parking available.

MUST VISIT. Only place that you can find roses in Fukuoka during December. Very well maintained garden.
Spanya U — Google review
The park is vast and beautiful. So many different plants, too, it's like an arboretum or something. The museums have a 700 yen entry fee each, I haven't tried them yet. English-language signage is a bit hit or miss, so you may struggle to get the full experience if your Japanese is poor. They do identify each of the plants, at least, and by the Sakamoto Hanjiro studio/atelier there is a full description of who he was.

Sights & Landmarks
Kurume Castle Ruins is a site of historical significance, surrounded by lush wooded grounds. The ruins include a 19th-century Shinto shrine featuring five stone pillars. Visitors can have an enjoyable time under the shade of the giant tree and witness stunning cherry blossom views in the area. The castle's remains are relatively small, but still impressive with beautiful stonework known as ishigaki.
Walk not that far from Kurume station. No remaining castle can be found except the walls. There is temple inside, and can see the river from the top. From another side, can see the sport field of Kurume university. This area seems not famous with tourist. When i visited there, only 5 or 6 people around and they are not foreign. The place is so quiet.

The site of Kurume Castle is a park where visitors can still see the impressive stone walls and moats, remnants of the castle's former structure. The Arima Memorial Museum is located within the former honmaru, offering exhibits related to the Arima clan and the history of the Kurume Domain. The ruins are designated a Municipal Cultural Asset and are known as a scenic spot, especially during the cherry blossom season when about 30 cherry trees bloom, adding color to the historic site.

Not much to see. But it was nice to walk around and enjoy the quite serene environment. There's chair to sit and enjoy the view looking over the river. Ramen restaurant
Maruboshi Ramen is a highly renowned ramen establishment, adorned with numerous photos of famous celebrities enjoying their meals. This results in a consistently bustling atmosphere, even late at night when the restaurant remains open 24 hours. The ramen itself is not only affordably priced but also boasts exceptional flavor. Distinguishing itself from typical tonkotsu ramen, Maruboshi offers a lighter and more refined taste experience.
Was introduced to this restaurant by a Japanese friend. The place serves cheap and good ramen. One of the best I’ve eaten in Fukuoka!
Yanxin — Google review
This is a ramen shop I often visited as a child. The sign reads “Maruboshi Chinese Noodle Center.” The menu typically includes ramen, rice, and oden. Kurume is said to be the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen, and Maruboshi is one of its representative ramen shops. Kurume ramen is considered the original form of tonkotsu ramen, characterized by a strong pork bone aroma in the broth, thin noodles, and simple toppings like green onions and a bit of char siu. It’s a rugged ramen in a way. While it has a distinct flavor, it becomes truly delicious once you get used to it. If you are in the area, you should definitely try it.
Google review
One of the best pork base soup there is. Not oily but the taste is perfect. Highly recomended for ramen fans!
Nik F — Google review
This ramen shop is very famous. Lots of pictures of celebrities eating there cover the walls. So it's very busy. Even at 11pm. (I think it's open 24 hours) the ramen is cheap and has great flavour. It's a little lighter and has a cleaner taste than most tonkotsu ramen. Most people order oden too. There's no gyoza!

Bestest, cheapest ramen in town! Love their free tsukemono! Not a place to bring your first date to impress ... This place exists only because the ramen is magic (and the staff are fast and friendly, of course!), not the facilities. A must-visit if you're passing through Kurume. Historical ramen shop.

AWESOME tonkatsu ramen. We accidentally ordered an extra serving of ramen and because it came a minute late, the oba-san gave us a whole second bowl! We were STUFFED. Now I'm craving for more! The soup was filled with flavor and not super heavy. If you want to come here for lunch, I'd come 5-10 mins before 12pm. It seems like EVERYONE arrived at 12pm and there was a long line out the door.

Unagi restaurant
富松うなぎ屋 黒田本店 is a renowned restaurant known for its delectable freshwater eel dishes, prepared on a charcoal grill to infuse them with a tantalizing aroma. The meals feature generous portions of high-quality eel meat, cooked in the Yamagata style and served with a flavorful sauce.
Tomimatsu Unagiya Kuroda Main Branch, a famous eel restaurant in Chikugo whilst visiting from Australia. Our Japanese friend introduced here as she loves the eel. I was not convinced as I never eat unagi (eel) regularly. We arrived at 1:30pm, probably not the best time as we waited for over 1 hour to enter, because a lot of customers were ahead of us. Outside the store, the fragrant smoke of grilled eel pours out, with its distinctive smell. When you are waiting at the store, you must take turns entering by the number given. We were shown into a beautiful room with a view of the garden and pond containing Coi fish. I ordered steamed steamer (special quality), which I had considered on our friends' recommendation. The Seiro-mushi is fragrantly steamed eel topped with a shredded egg, and the eel is placed inside steamed rice soaked in sauce. To my surprise it is double layered, rice eel rice eel. In addition to bamboo steamer, soup, vinegared eel, salad, and pickles were included. Now I just sceptical about eating, but the taste was irresistible, and the eel just melted away in my mouth. The steamed rice soaked in sauce is delicious on its own and it still contains steamed eel. I could eat it in harmony. I had a very enjoyable meal. Thank you for the meal and my mind has changed about eating eel from now after this experience. Arigato Gozaimus.

Ramen restaurant
Hirose Shokudo is a must-visit ramen shop that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Nestled in Hiroshima Prefecture, this eatery boasts both an old and new location, each serving up delicious dishes that keep patrons coming back for more. The tonkotsu ramen features a rich, flavorful broth infused with the delightful aroma of pork bones from the very first sip.
My new number 1 tonkotsu ramen spot. It's good, real good. Even better than the legendary Ippudos`.

(Translated by Google) The last time I visited, it was a few days after they opened. It took two hours to get a seat, then another 30 minutes for the bowl to arrive, and it wasn't the taste of Hirose Shokudo, so it was a complete disaster. This time, I visited a few months later, and I had some hopes, but it still wasn't the taste of Hirose Shokudo. The ramen didn't have any extra soup, and the fried rice looked similar, but the taste was completely different! It may sound a bit harsh, but how about asking the second generation chef to teach them again? Personally, I'd love to experience the delicious flavors of Hirose Shokudo.

Some people have written that the turnover is slow, but I've been to places with even slower turnover, so I don't think this place has a slow turnover at all. The fried rice is carefully made, and the ramen has a mild flavor and is delicious. I ordered extra noodles for myself and my partner's, drank up the soup, and was full and satisfied. I'll go again.

[Atmosphere/Emotion] I was excited to hear that "Hirose Shokudo," a local soul food restaurant founded in 1957, has been revived by the owner of "Ramen Tatsunoya" to preserve its signature flavor! I was prepared to wait in line, but their enthusiasm is worth it. [Food] I ordered the set meal. This portion was so delicious, with a nostalgic yet refined soup and plenty of toppings. It's simple yet heartwarming. It truly embodies the love for the local area. The fried rice is a big hit, as expected!! [Speed/Decor] I heard they've retained the tables, chairs, tableware, and menu from the old restaurant! Because it's so carefully prepared, the ramen comes out a little slowly!! But it's delicious! 😋🩷 [Access & Parking] Located along National Route 209, the restaurant is easily accessible with ample parking in front and behind (10 spaces total). It's safe to come by car. The parking lot can be a bit hard to find at first, so ⚠️ It was delicious, as expected!

(Translated by Google) This ramen shop is located in Shiraguchi, Araki-cho, Kurume City, along National Route 209. It's a small establishment with only five counter seats and four four-person tables. There's a decent amount of parking, but be aware that it fills up quickly. It's open only for lunch (until 6:00 PM). The ramen boasts a typical Kurume-style tonkotsu soup with a perfect balance of light sweetness and a moderate tonkotsu flavor. The noodles are medium-thick, straight, and chewy. The toppings include char siu, sliced boiled egg, seaweed, and green onion. It truly exudes a relaxed, diner-style flavor. Large portions are available, and refills are available. The only ramen available is the large ramen. Another featured dish is the fried rice, available in two sizes: large and regular (or, more accurately, three types, including the half-fried rice set). The regular size is enough to fill you up. It has a moist texture and is well-seasoned. Incidentally, since the previous store, a takeout bag and aluminum foil for the fried rice has been provided on the table in the center of the floor, along with side plates and condiments. Contrary to expectations, it's become a common sight at this restaurant to see customers self-serve any leftovers. The only other menu items available are "rice," "large rice," and "medium bottled beer." The set menu consists solely of different sizes of "ramen" and "fried rice." Established in 1958, this famous, long-established ramen shop in Kurume was one of the city's top three ramen restaurants. However, due to the aging staff and labor shortages, the menu was gradually reduced, and around 2023-2024, the restaurant even went so far as to announce "no fried rice" and then "no ramen." When the decision was finally made to close, the owner of Ryunoya, headquartered in Kamitsu, Kurume City, accepted the offer to take over the business, and the restaurant reopened at its current location on April 24, 2025. The restaurant still retains the original Umemancho store's signature sign, menu wooden plaques, and sticker-covered mirror, creating a truly authentic atmosphere. The aforementioned takeout corner in the center of the floor has also been retained, demonstrating respect for the previous restaurant and exceptional attention to detail. Above all, I was impressed by the high level of detail in the authentic ramen and fried rice dishes, with even more refined flavors. While waits of over 60 minutes to enter the restaurant and for fried rice inside are commonplace, depending on the time of day, it's definitely worth the wait. The restaurant seems to be quietest between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, so I recommend visiting around that time.

I wasn't able to go to the previous location, and when it closed I was disappointed I couldn't eat there, but I heard it has reopened after moving. This time, I waited in line outside for about 15 minutes, then waited inside for about 8 minutes in the waiting area before sitting at the counter. I like my fried rice to be a bit light, but this one didn't seem to be that way. I think it's a matter of personal preference. There is a free parking lot nearby, but it's usually full.

(Translated by Google) This was my first visit since the new restaurant opened. Oh, the atmosphere inside is the same as before! Surprising! But the slow turnover is probably the same too. 💧 Maybe the ramen has a bit too strong a flavor? I think the fried rice was like this. I've gotten so old, haven't I? Even the half-fried rice set was just barely filling. Phew.

This place is an institution to itself. Famous for its niku-udon, you can even get this comfort dish shipped to you in Japan to enjoy in the comfort of your own home or at a vending machine located outside the restaurant. The broth is deep and rich and the udon is unique as it’s not al dente like elsewhere but on the softer side. The beef is wonderfully tender and still holds together with its own texture and doesn’t disintegrate to shreds. Inside you can view the signatures of famous patrons who came before you. Having an udon here is a sharing in the history and tradition of this establishment. Worth a detour.

Old shop. Very popular with the locals and after eating here, I understand why.

Best udon shop in Kurume! Also most famous! Personally, love that huge curry udon dish! Try to eat that without a bib ... not! haha The walls and pillars are filled with autograph cards from celebrities from all around Japan and abroad. But this is a spartan, no-frills udon joint. The staff are fast and always look busy, but they are very pleasant ... and the udon? Out of this world!

The delicate soup stock and chewy udon noodles are delicious.

(Translated by Google) It's delicious, as always! 😋 [Price] Even a lunch around ¥1,000 per person is satisfying. The satisfaction is incredible at this price! This restaurant is easy on the wallet and warms both body and soul. [Food] The specialty "Niku Gobo Ten Udon" (meat and burdock tempura udon) features fluffy, chewy noodles and a clear broth flavored with kelp and bonito flakes. The freshly fried, crispy burdock tempura is absolutely delicious when paired with the sweet and spicy beef! The "mazemeshi" (mixed rice) also has a gentle flavor and makes a perfect side dish. [Atmosphere] The spacious restaurant exudes the feel of a traditional local udon restaurant, offering both table and tatami seating, making it perfect for families. The walls are covered with autographed autographs from celebrities, which is a real joy. [Service/Turnership] Although it's always busy, the staff are efficient and the wait times are short. It's easy to see why this restaurant has continued to be loved by locals. [Access & Parking] Located just off the Kurume Interchange, there's a large parking lot (approximately 30 spaces) in front of the store, making it convenient for driving. Because it's a popular restaurant, it tends to fill up at lunchtime, but the turnover is quick, so you can usually find a spot without any hassle.

Kurume Ramen Seiyoken is a must-visit for ramen enthusiasts. The thick yet non-greasy broth and perfectly textured noodles make it an unparalleled dining experience. The gyoza, with its crispy bottom and expertly steamed top, is also highly recommended. Visitors praise the delicious tonkotsu broth and chashu, while some even claim that the fried rice served here is the best they've ever had.
The best ramen ever nothing will compare to this ramen. It is thick but not oily it doesn't sit heavy and it makes you feel good after eating the ramen! the gyoza is also really good it is nice and crispy on the bottom with the top expertly steamed! I have now been mulitple times and it is worth the trip. The service is also very accomodating and very nice!

We came at 4pm and not busy in store. The ramen was great but within expectation with no surprise. We hesitated to order fried rice as side dish, finally we picked dumplings. It was juicy and should order with my recommendation.

Delicious ramen! Order via a tablet. Make your meal a set: we got the rice and gyoza. The child size soup is so cute! Plenty of parking and plenty of seating. Great stop!

Their ramen is so amazing. So rich but not greasy at all. The most surprising is their fried rice, which the flavor of the egg is so outstanding. The price is also very affordable as well.
