This is such a lovely garden! It is full of flowers, fountains, ponds, waterfalls, bridges, los of koi and a swan. Japanese really know how to do gardens.
The show about Indigo was well curated. The gardens are well maintained.
There's a huge fountain in the center of the yard. Quiet and peachful just watching the beautiful yard and flower garden. The art museum is not very big, but the exhibition is quite good and them change themes from time to time, so there's always something new to see. Lovely place.
Mr.Obana, His "Chikugo River Series" (his masterpiece), "Sea Series" featuring the sea of Kunitachi Peninsula, "Music Series" in which he attempted to visualize sound, and "Red Series" in which he stripped down the form to the minimum are just a few of the highlights. Highly recommended.
The exhibition was not so impressive, but i could easily understand this museum plays an important role in the city.
Good museum, would be better with signage to parking which is shared with community center. Also no water fountain in building.
Lovely place to enjoy the well-kept garden and landscaping, the art museum and the library. The only problem is the limited parking space AND the dangerous turn you need to make to get in and out (library side parking).
This is a small museum located in Ishibashi Culture Center area. When I visited there, museum displayed Seiji Togo's works. Park like setting is very nice,

It’s beautiful, but for hiking ( 30-40mins). The road leads to the shrine is very peaceful, and so nice. In the moutain, view is nice, but not great. We want to wait until the street light turn on. We wait from the sunset (5pm ) until it got dark (6pm) then we asked and knew that the lights only turned on 7pm. And u know, we are tourist, so we dont have car, we had to go hiking back to the station. When there was dark and no light, it’s so difficult to go down stairs in the forest. Luckily, there was another tourist friends also returned to the station and we walked together in the dark. We hope that light could be on sooner. And the transportation here could be better next time. ( we tried to book uber but there’s no uber. and the bus to the station is not available much often after 7pm)
I visited Koura Taisha Shrine on a Friday in August 2025, right in the summer heat. It was super peaceful—just a few foreigners and some locals resting after hiking up the mountain. The road is winding and small, adding a sense of adventure on the way up. The stairs to the shrine are steep and a bit of a workout, but you can take a lift if you’d rather skip the climb. Along the way, you pass traditional wooden buildings and smaller shrines that give the whole area a really authentic, serene vibe. At the top, the main shrine is beautiful, and you can offer a prayer if you’re interested in Shinto traditions. The viewing deck nearby offers a sweeping panorama of Kurume City and the surrounding hills. I bet it’s especially stunning in spring with cherry blossoms or in fall when the leaves turn golden.
I planned to come see the temple and see the city's night lights and the decorative lamps along the way up, but the decorative lamps along the way up were not turned on. I'm not sure if the decorative lamps along the way up are turned on every day.
Such a beautiful shrine, easy to access, wonderful scenery. Must visit place if u re in Kurume City
Highly recommend for travellers who will rent a car in fukuoka. Very nice shrine in the area, and it is close to Tosu outlet, and in between Kumamoto and Fukuoka, good spot in between.
A very beautiful and peaceful shrine. We visited it in the early hours of the morning and the air was fresh and invigorating. The atmosphere was silent but full of promises. I recommend taking the family here for a visit.
The buildings are built as if they were assembled from blocks of wood and do not use nails. This is a way of avoiding collapse in earthquake-prone Japan. It is wonderful to see this technique, called KIGUMI, up close. At Kora Taisha, lanterns are lit only in August; August 29, 2025
Posting my experience so you can learn from my mistakes lol my friend and I visited this shrine around 4pm, it took us an hour to get to the top. You go through some streets in a small college town (lots of students) then pretty much it’s residential and super quiet. Google Maps will have you go through the forest with lots of rock steps and it’s shady. Kinda scary if you’re just alone lol. This path will take you straight to the shrine but if you take the road way instead on the left, it’ll take you to the bottom of the stairs of the shrine instead. It’s a bit longer but easier. There are no lights until August! And no taxis but there was a taxi driver waiting for a passenger because they called ahead. I recommend doing that. Overall the shrine is beautiful and the views is amazing. You get a sense of victory getting there.

Although the location was a bit inaccessible for tourists like me, we venture to pay a visit to this place out of curiosity! To my amazement, this place is a heaven for those who admire and are fascinated with Kurume’s (or Japanese, more broadly) gastronomic culture! You can find diverse type of locally grown, produced, or prepared fresh produce and delicacies with unbeatably affordable price! The fruits were particularly impressive! Whenever you get a chance to visit this place, do try out the fruit and you won’t regret it!
They sell plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and souvenirs.Beside is you can buy also plants.Wide varieties.Kurume is known for azalea and tsustuji but they have many plants to offer.
A very nice and pleasant place to stop by for lunch and shopping local produce fresh from the farms at reasonable prices.
Good for breaking the drive, stretch the legs and to buy some local produce along the way.
Good food and shop.
(Translated by Google) The vegetables are so fresh, it's exciting to visit this roadside station! Kurume Roadside Station was amazing. All the local vegetables were sparkling clean and felt so alive, completely different from those at the supermarket! I was having so much fun that my basket got heavier and heavier (lol). They also had a wide selection of processed foods and prepared dishes, and before I knew it, I probably bought twice as much as I intended... The parking lot was a little crowded, but the turnover was fast. There was a space for large vehicles, so it seems like a popular stop during travels. If you're heading towards Kurume, this is definitely a must-visit! ◎ Next time, I'd like to take my time and check it out on a weekday!

Such a wonderful park, free entrance too! Famous for having a lot of flowers. Supposed to be near hydrangeas season now but was there too early and the flowers were not in full bloom yet. There is a rose garden and there are so many varieties of roses. Even though the roses were not in peak bloom, they were still insanely gorgeous! There are other gardens for other plants too, but they were not in season. There is a big lake, with a swan, and many fishes. The area surrounding the lake was wonderful. You can spend hours here just enjoying the peaceful and beautiful park, strolling along the paths and around the lake. The area is quite big.
This quickly became one of my favorite parks in all of Japan. From the message at the entrance, beautiful statues, fountain, seasonal flowers, and museum, this place was so relaxing. Everyone there was very friendly and we even had a kind older woman come up to talk with us, and later she found us and gave us discount tickets to the art museum! There was a small festival, with some food booths and a jewelry stand as well. I don’t know who is in charge of choosing, planting, and arranging the flowers, but they deserve a raise because everything was beautiful. I wish I lived nearby so I could spend more time here and experience the different seasons. The park itself is free, and they have some paid parking available.
MUST VISIT. Only place that you can find roses in Fukuoka during December. Very well maintained garden.
The park is vast and beautiful. So many different plants, too, it's like an arboretum or something. The museums have a 700 yen entry fee each, I haven't tried them yet. English-language signage is a bit hit or miss, so you may struggle to get the full experience if your Japanese is poor. They do identify each of the plants, at least, and by the Sakamoto Hanjiro studio/atelier there is a full description of who he was.
A beautiful place for leisure walk and enjoy the nature.
Beautiful scenery. A good place to enjoy nature, culture and enrichment of historic occurrence.
I Mostly recommend this beautiful place.
The season when roses bloom is very nice. You can see some very rare varieties...

(Translated by Google) Last month, I had my car repaired, but when it came back from the repair, the car navigation system was not working, so I went to ask about the cause. The attitude of the mechanic S, who was in charge, was very bad and unpleasant, and I was not convinced by his explanation, so I was disappointed in Weekers. To that person, I am a young girl in her early 20s, and even if he thinks that it is okay to look down on me, it is his value, so I can't help it, but I was not satisfied with how he treated me as a customer, so I came back the next day. Mr. S was off work, so the factory manager came out. When I told him about the behavior yesterday and the car navigation, he responded sincerely, and I felt a little relieved that he would respond properly even though he is young. Later, Mr. S called to apologize, but it was a standard apology and he didn't seem to understand what was wrong. When I asked him if he knew what was wrong, I heard a small voice say "Huh?" When I told him that it was okay, he said "I'm sorry" in a voice that sounded like he was sulking and not convinced. If I use the service again, I will not ask Mr. S to be my rep. Walk not that far from Kurume station. No remaining castle can be found except the walls. There is temple inside, and can see the river from the top. From another side, can see the sport field of Kurume university. This area seems not famous with tourist. When i visited there, only 5 or 6 people around and they are not foreign. The place is so quiet.
The site of Kurume Castle is a park where visitors can still see the impressive stone walls and moats, remnants of the castle's former structure. The Arima Memorial Museum is located within the former honmaru, offering exhibits related to the Arima clan and the history of the Kurume Domain. The ruins are designated a Municipal Cultural Asset and are known as a scenic spot, especially during the cherry blossom season when about 30 cherry trees bloom, adding color to the historic site.
Not much to see. But it was nice to walk around and enjoy the quite serene environment. There's chair to sit and enjoy the view looking over the river. I was there on the late afternoon and there was no visitor but me. So I enjoy the place myself and felt peace. It is a nice place to just sit down and wonders your mind while looking the river.

Very fun place to take your kids. The entrance fee is also very cheap, around 400 yen for adult
Interactive science museum where I had so much fun! It covers physics, electricity, robotics, environment, etc. There are a total of 4 floors (the last floor only opens after 13:30 which is the observatory and I didn't manage to visit it). Also, it costs only 210 yen for an adult. I went there during a weekday and there were not many people around. You could even get a robot to draw for you for free! Do note that most of the videos and shows (at available timings) are in Japanese. Only the interactive displays have English explanations.
Unique place for spending time with children (kindergarten or elementary school). Plenty of activities and science phenomena can be experienced here (planets, physics, magnets, robots, etc.) The biggest advantage over few similar places is that it is never crowded and adults can always find a cost place to rest, while children investigate area by themselves. Recently opened the area for the small children where they can play with LEGO, magnet toys and other things.
Very nice place for the kids. Loads of things to play.
There are a lot of wonders here, but they are all based on science. You will surely be interested in science, too! Observe the stars through a large telescope.
Was lots of fun. We went with a 3 year old and he loved it so much. Not much English but a lot is self explanatory. Lots of cool structures and attractions. Recommend for families.
It emphasizes the science relating to space science. The interacting facilities are great but more suitable for children.
Wonderful observatory. Very convenient location for a day trip. I recommend to see the park and bird center as well.

Very friendly people…
This is my seventh year living in Japan. I have lived in Beppu and Kagoshima and never had any problems when getting documents. Both city halls were very foreigner-friendly, understanding foreigner feelings, and communicating with great professionalism. This is my second time facing this kind of experience at the Kurume City Hall. The first incident occurred when my wife and I went to register her at our current address. When we submitted the English translated marriage certificate, they said they could not accept it and that it should be in our native language (Sinhala). They then asked us to write the meaning of the document in Japanese. Imagine if someone who is poor at Japanese and write something completely different about the translation and submit it—they would still accept it. English is a well-known language, and with a little searching, you can translate it to any language. Why do they keep asking for these things specifically from foreigners , which are really unfair to foreigners.Rules should exist to make human lives more comfortable, not harder. The second incident happened today when I went to register my inkan. After we wrote the application and submitted it, they saw my name in English and said it didn’t match my name, asking me to make a new inkan. I have been using that inkan throughout my university life and for school and visa applications without any problems. If there was an issue with my inkan, I should have been asked to change it earlier. I explained to the young lady that this was my English name and that my name was too long to fit all the letters on the inkan. She then went inside to consult a male officer. After discussing, they said they could not accept it. We arrived at 4:20 pm, and the city hall closes at 5:15 pm on Mondays. I asked the lady if an inkan in katakana would be acceptable, and she said it would. She didn’t even advise what to do in these situations I have to think that and act.My wife and I then searched for the nearest inkan maker shop. The first one was closed, but we found another, and the owner made an inkan in 10 minutes. We managed to return to the city hall by 5:05 pm. We rewrote the form and submitted it, and they accepted it. As a foreigner working in Japan, taking a holiday is costly, because it reduce the paid leaves which I have to spend with my family when I go back to Sri Lanka in vacations. Therefore to come for my work in weekdays cost me my paid holidays. This is the second time I have faced these unfriendly rules, which make my life as a foreigner difficult. This is the worst city hall I have dealt with. I never intended to write this review, but I decided that rules should make human lives better and more comfortable, not be based on race or nationality. Therefore, they need to create an environment that makes life better for foreigners living in Kurume City, not more difficult. I hope and wish they will see my review as a positive one and make necessary changes. Thank you.
One location to complete all of your city-related tasks: my number cards, family registration, etc… The Free parking can get crowded.
Disorganized.front desk tells me go to 3rd floor, room 302. People in room 302 tell me go to 308, show me the way. Person from 308 tells me to go to first floor to copy documents for my vaccine passport, and to buy a stamp from the conbini. No conbini on 1st floor so ask the original staff that started this goose chase - she tells me 2nd floor. Get to second floor and wander as there is no sign showing the way, find it hidden in a corner with a small sign. Back down to fist floor to go to elevator to 3rd floor to hand in photocopies and stamp for a vaccination passport that an organized place would have digitized for a simple online application. Come out of the 1970s and get organized.
It's easy to find your way around even if you don't speak English. Just make sure you know what you want because not everyone knows what they're doing. Be prepared to ask questions if you're not satisfied with the answers you're getting.
very humble respectful staff in city hall..

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Slide 1 of 8
A beautiful Buddhist temple with excellent landscaping of varieties of Ajisai flowers. Best time to visit for the flowers in their peek bloom seems to be the first two weeks of June. We got there end of June and as you see in photos it was still beautiful.
<June 7, 2025> About 50-60% of the hydrangeas have bloomed. Most of them are white hydrangeas. Blue and violet hydrangeas are not many. I think the flowers will be in full bloom within the next 7 days, and the view would be more beautiful. Entrance fee is ¥300/person. If you commute here from Fukuoka City, take a train from Nishitetsu Tenjin station to Nishitetsu Kurume station; then hop on the bus No.25-1 from this station and get off at Yamamoto Community, and walk for 10mins till here.
A beautiful temple, I visited after hiking Korasan
Nothing crazy, a few bamboos and marches up
Added hydrangea in 2025.

I found out by reading the comments (lol) There was a group brought here by a large bus, and it felt like a real business. The hydrangeas are beautiful, but there is a graveyard right next to them, so some people who don't like them might not like them! Last time, I posted comments and photos on the category page "Ryugosan Senkoji Hydrangeas" (an old page, I will leave the photos/hydrangeas before they bloom for a while), but Google only allows up to 50 photos per category, so I will change the page. By the way, regardless of the evening... Well, what surprised me was that, strangely enough...there were a lot of young people, both men and women, visiting during the hour or so I was here. I guess the main purpose is the hydrangeas. Either way, it's a great opportunity for Senkoji Temple. It all starts with getting people to know about the temple... (Translated by Google) The gourmet food we will be introducing today is ``Darum Chips 500 yen'' created by ``KURUME Good Foods,'' which operates restaurants such as Kushiyaki Hotarukawa and KURUME Gelato. Speaking of Kurume people's soul food, it is "Yakitori". Easy-to-use chips made with domestic pork "dalm" made crispy using a unique manufacturing method. It has an original soy sauce flavor that brings out the flavor of the ingredients. The content is 40 grams. The amount is about 3 to 4 dalm skewers. This is what it looks like when you put it on a plate. When I took a bite of dalm chips... Is this Dalm? It feels like a crunchy snack. “The beer is really good!” The more you chew on it, the more Dalm's presence becomes assertive... A dull smell spreads in your mouth. I wonder if children can eat this too. I'm not giving it away because it's a waste ( ̄^ ̄)ゞ Perfect for a quick drink! A great item that makes a great souvenir♪ P.S. By the way, what is Dharm? A medical student from Kurume sells "pork intestines (hormones)" at a Yakitori stall. It seems that the German word for ordering ``Darm'' has become popular. Hormones are the intestines of cows and pigs, and in the past, they were discarded because they rotted quickly. This is a myth that comes from the Osaka dialect for ``throw away'', ``horumon''. Instead of forcing everything into one small paper bag without saying a word, use a larger, roomier bag, or ask, ``The handles of paper bags are short and easily tear, so why don't you double them?'' ” I would like consideration. I also feel that there is a need for customer service to ask customers if they need smaller bags. It's a souvenir shop at a station where the Shinkansen stops, so I expect customer service that would be embarrassing for a Kurume counter. In particular, you can find famous sweets that you may not know about even if you live locally, and the special feature of this store is that you can also shop at transportation ICs. As a countermeasure against food loss, there are also some freebies that are easy to purchase, so we recommend that you try purchasing them at least once. The plum blossoms are in full bloom and it is very emotional.
Bairinji is much more than a temple with a garden where it is nice to view the plum blossoms. It is a so called training temple of the Rinzai (Chinese: Linchi, Korean: Imje) Sect, which is one of the two main Zen sects inJapan ( Soto and Rinzai). The meditation and religious programs of the temple are somewhat difficult to access or to have information about. However it is possible by making a phone call or by ringing the buzzer at the main entrance. This temple is now the main training temple of the Rinzai sect in Kyushu. The temple was moved from around Kyoto area to its current location in the Edo dynasty. Most mornings the monks and some lay people take part of a personal interview with the Zen Master (Roshi) who resides at the temple. One time a month there is an open ceremony in the great hall (Hondo) dedicated to the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Kannon. The vent is called “Kannongou”, literally “Kannon Lecture”. In case the temple is contacted it might be slightly difficult to get accurate information. This may be due to inexperienced young monks. But if people persist and do not give up easily much more can be learned and experienced about Bairinji Temple than the beauty and the serenity of the garden.

There seem to be several parking lots, but the riverbed parking lot is probably the widest and easiest to park. However, there was still a bit of a waiting list in the afternoon. If you go on a weekend, the roads are narrow with people coming and going, so please drive carefully.
