Scenic spot
Nature preserve
Cape Muroto, located at the tip of the Muroto Peninsula, is a stunning natural wonder that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The area features a 2.6km Ransho Boardwalk offering breathtaking views of volcanic rock formations and coastline uplifts caused by seismic activity. This region is part of a UNESCO global geopark, ensuring its natural beauty is preserved while promoting sustainable tourism.
Even part of pathway was destroyed by typhoon in 2018, the path shows it's strong adaptiveness to the nature. High recommend to spend at least 1.5 hours here.

Beautiful cape along the road. Nice short walk, picnic tables to enjoy a lunch or simply sit on the rocky beach and enjoy the sound of the waves and the view.
Olivier G — Google review
Beautiful cape with a convenient walking trail along the coast. Most of the paths are paved.

A scenic spot in Shikoku. Plenty of free parking next to tourist information office. You can take a walking trail along the coast, or climb up the view point behind the statue to take in the panoramic view. Some Japanese ryokans along the cape.

We have enjoyed it but found it difficult to locate even a restaurant near there.

This is a beautiful gravel beach formed of weird shaped rocks. l never get tired of looking at that. When I visited this place, there was no one but me. It was relaxing. But, I found the large skeleton of a whale carcass on the beach. I got disgusted.

Situated on the eastern tip of Kochi Prefecture's Muroto Peninsula, the Muroto Global Geopark Center is a UNESCO-designated site of international geological significance. The area showcases evidence of its earthquake-filled past, with features like trace fossils and marine terraces that tell the story of the peninsula's uplift over thousands of years due to subduction. Visitors can take guided tours in English and rent bicycles for exploration.
I would come back again to see the sunrise in the Pacific Ocean.

Very informative in geology and local culture. I arrived a bit late and so most restaurants were not serving lunch, but staff of tourist information helped me to call around nearby restaurants and I managed to fill my belly well. Thank you!
Jammie Y — Google review
There were staff immediately available to help us. One staff member even took the time to give us a brief guided tour. Muroto exists at a spot that might very well experience a catastrophic change within the next 30 years. The way the people of this area cope with that, and have developed through their history, is really amazing.

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Hotsumisakiji Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple located on a steep cliff with stunning sea views. It holds great significance as the 24th temple along the 88 Temple Pilgrimage, and it is believed that Kobo Daishi achieved enlightenment here. The pilgrimage to this temple can be challenging, with options to approach it from different directions. The area around the temple offers lodgings for pilgrims, and there are both walking trails and roads leading up to the sacred site.
The more difficult it is to access a Buddhist temple, the greater the reward (at least that seems to be the norm in Japan)! This glorious temple above Cape Muroto on Shikoku is well worth either the difficult drive or very challenging hike. It's remote location means that there's a good amount of car traffic late in the day, and the road is steep and narrow. Not as bad as some that require the person going uphill to back down until a place can be found for an uphill car to pass, but very dicey nonetheless, especially when people start hurrying to get their goshuincho to the calligrapher before the temple closes (at 5 pm). If you have time, hike the very steep trail from the north side of the cape up to the temple. We hiked halfway down the trail from the temple, and the cool ocean breeze through the old forest was wonderfully refreshing on a warm day. We were able to catch glimpses of the ocean below, and wished we had an entire day to make the hike to the temple and savor the experience.

The angry old man in the office yelled at me because I slid one of the doors the wrong way when I came in. Maybe he was constipated and bitter because he couldn't go to the bathroom or something else was preventing the movement. That's the way his face looked anyway. I guess he couldn't leave his post because he had to stamp the books for the pilgrims. Anyway, I went around looking at the temple. Really beautiful structures here. I actually came for the lighthouse but you know - the Henro is here too. I've been to about eight temples on this (not my) pilgrimage since coming to this island, but I'm not getting a stamp book or wearing white clothes or whatever. I am wearing a yellow button with Mikyan-chan on it. Maybe that will help me get to wherever I need to go in the otherworld. Again anyway, while I was walking around here, that old man was really getting into my head, so I went in front of the office and stared him down through the window for a minute or two. He looked nervous because I am kind of strong-looking I guess which is just a constructed illusion. I wouldn't be violent or anything like that in a Buddhist temple, but I just wanted to feel better and I guess it did make me feel better, so I also guess there's something wrong with me for wanting to act this way. No, I'm certain of this. Maybe I need to walk the Henro like other people do. Nah.

Nolwenn R — Google review
This temple on the top of the mountain is nice to visit, just at beside there is a lighthouse and huge view of the ocean, one path until there took 20 minutes by walk.
Shinden ( — Google review
It's a nice lil temple, in combination with the view from the parking lot or the lighthouse a good place to visit if you're nearby
Johannes U — Google review
It is a beautiful ride down the coast to get here, and of course the scenery is great. The problem was that it isn't very accommodating for cyclists, I never found the place to park my bike, I just locked it to a bar in the parking lot.

Facing south to the Pacific Ocean, this temple has a spectacular location. Be sure to also visit Tonohama beach nearby where you too can find your own ocean-washed stone. I've kept mine.

Garden
Nature & Parks
Kitagawa Village "Monet's Garden" Marmottan is a stunning recreation of the famous gardens of Giverny, France, which were beloved by the impressionist artist Claude Monet. Spanning approximately 30,000 square meters, this unique garden features three distinct sections: the Light Garden inspired by Monet's Mediterranean works, the Flower Garden showcasing seasonal blooms like an artist's palette, and the Water Garden reminiscent of his masterpiece Water Lilies.
Beautiful garden with a large pond. Nature at its best with more frogs, reptiles and insects going about than you could count. It's pretty diverse with a pond section, flower section, Mediterranean section and a forest trail leading to a viewpoint. Would certainly visit again.
Jeroen — Google review
A nice garden which is officially certified by an heir of Monet themselves. The garden had 3 zones which were full of flowers. At some point there placed a referral Monet's pictures to compare with their garden.
Sarasate E — Google review
Such a pretty place split into different garden areas. Our favourites were the Flower Garden which was in full bloom with tons of butterflies and bees, and the Lily Pond full of flowering blue, pink and yellow lilies which also had masses of butterflies and beautiful blue dragon flies. There is also a gallery, gift shop and cafe, all of which are worth a visit. If you like gardens or are interested in Claude Monet's life and art works, you must not miss this!
Deb ( — Google review
I agree with those who say: it’s going to depend on the season you go. I went on March 20th, 2023. The Monet garden… didn’t really look like the pictures. All of the water lilies were gone or dead (most likely because of winter, not extermination). The bridge is nice enough, but it is a *metal* replica and doesn’t quite match what I imagined. As the Monet garden is THE sales point for this place, it felt like a let down. Summer is probably great though. The floral garden is lovely. There were plenty of blooms. That said, I live in Mie prefecture, and there are at least two gardens here which have much vaster floral displays for comparable prices, Nabana no Sato and Red Hills Hisa. The flowers here in Kitagawa were nice but the garden was fairly small in comparison. The Mediterranean area is interesting and clearly much effort was put into making it, but again not much was blooming. A couple minor negative points: there are a few places where there clearly used to be something, and they just gave up. “No entry” signs and whatever was there is starting to be engulfed by forest/weeds. Also, there are signs for a long hike to “Wind Hill”. It is all uphill and basically just a standard “lookout point” over the city. Nothing there of interest at all. If you like lookout points (they’re everywhere in Japan) go for it. Otherwise, wind hill can be skipped and you won’t miss anything but time. Price is reasonable at ¥1000. On the other hand, this garden was listed in a book of “1000 wonderful Japanese views” and I wouldn’t put it that high. Nice enough if you’re in the area, I wouldn’t make a special trip.

A beautiful garden with a variety of photo opportunities. I went on a Friday afternoon, and it was not too crowded. I also got a Ryoma Passport stamp.

Even without a reservation, one can secure a table thanks to the accommodating and polite wait staff.

The wait staff was super friendly and polite, and explained how to eat the kinme-don, which is what this town and location is famous for. Japanese restaurant
Nestled in a charming yet somewhat elusive location, Kamameshi Hatsune is a delightful kettle restaurant that promises an unforgettable culinary experience. Known for its extensive menu, the standout dish here is undoubtedly the Hatsune Kinmedai Donburi. This bowl features both sashimi and teriyaki preparations of the local golden eye snapper, showcasing the chef's exceptional skills. Diners rave about the firm and flavorful sashimi paired with perfectly seasoned teriyaki fish that complements rice beautifully.
Very authentic Japanese cuisine with very nice staff. This was my first time eating teishoku and the seafood was so fresh with the hot food feeling homemade. Definitely check this place out if you want a authentic taste of Japan!
Cody Y — Google review
This is a restaurant srrving delicious, run by a wonderful family. I cannot recommend the Hatsune Kinmedai donburi enough! It really showcases the technique of the chef, with both a sashimi portion and a teriyaki portion of the iconic and local golden eye snapper fish. It's a bit pricey, but for access to local, fresh fish, served in a community favorite, I think it is worth trying! If trying to eat here during the weekend, definitely try to call and reserve ahead of time!
Tin H — Google review
(Translated by Google) "Simple fresh fish dishes" I ordered Muroto Kinmedon. Oh, the sashimi has a lot of flavor and is very fresh! Furthermore, the teriyaki golden sea bream, which soaked up the sweet sauce, and the delicately flavored soup were also delicious. However, considering the price of 1980 yen, it might be nice to have something a little more...Lunch at other restaurants in Muroto also seems simple🙄. Still, it was a delicious fish lunch with good quality. I visited around lunch time, and it was surprisingly empty so I was seated right away. The interior of the restaurant has a purely Japanese interior with arranged Western music instrumentals, and all five tables are tatami mats. There was also a sense of cleanliness. It would be even more helpful if there was an easy-to-understand menu with photos. Payment methods are cash or PayPay only. The restroom was a bit small, but it was a clean Western-style toilet. There are approximately 5 spaces in the parking lot, making it convenient to visit by car. However, the road up to this point is a little narrow, so you need to be careful. Next time, I would like to try the Kinmedai Kamameshi set meal, which is priced at nearly 4,000 yen, so it's quite impressive😇.

(Translated by Google) The location is difficult to find, and the road is very narrow, so be careful. I recommend the Hatsune Kinmedai Donburi. The sashimi was firm and delicious. The teriyaki kinmedai (golden eye snapper) was exquisitely seasoned and went well with rice. The deep-fried whale was sweet and spicy, with a chewy texture and a slight bitterness. It would go well with both rice and alcohol. This was my first time trying the moray eel, and it was surprisingly delicious. It was light and tasted similar to deep-fried chicken skin. I was very satisfied with both the food and the service. Next time, I would like to come back for the kinmedai (golden eye snapper) kamameshi (rice pot). As it's a popular roadside station, the selection of fresh produce will be limited if you don't come in the morning. They sell gelato next to the direct sales store, and it's a great place to take a break and eat while looking out at the sea. The bento boxes sold at the gelato counter are reasonably priced, filling, and come in a wide variety, so I always buy one to take home when I stop by. (Translated by Google) This is a popular rest area for Muroto touring. 30℃🥵 in Kochi City on this day The temperature is lower in Muroto, so I stopped by for gelato But it was closed_| ̄|○ My mouth was like gelato😭 I knew they were closed on Mondays, but I didn't know they were closed until Thursdays💦 Other people parked their cars and were drawn into the direct sales store. They seemed to be there for loquats (we eat loquats at home, so we skipped them) As always, the local fish🐟 was a good deal! It was crowded with pilgrims and tourists. (Translated by Google) As this shop also sells direct from the producers, in addition to souvenirs they also sell local fish and vegetables, prepared foods and bento boxes, so it seems to be a shop that is popular with locals. The parking lot is by the sea, so the view is nice. There is also a gelato shop and a whale museum next door, which is convenient. You can enjoy its fragrance in the evening. (Original) 海側の堤防沿いに夏場ハマユウ(浜木綿)が開花。おそらく自生。堤防の上から覗き込むと見える。夕方、芳香が楽しめるかも。
