Cape Muroto

Scenic spot
Nature preserve
Cape Muroto, located at the tip of the Muroto Peninsula, is a stunning natural wonder that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The area features a 2.6km Ransho Boardwalk offering breathtaking views of volcanic rock formations and coastline uplifts caused by seismic activity. This region is part of a UNESCO global geopark, ensuring its natural beauty is preserved while promoting sustainable tourism.
Even part of pathway was destroyed by typhoon in 2018, the path shows it's strong adaptiveness to the nature. High recommend to spend at least 1.5 hours here.

Beautiful cape along the road. Nice short walk, picnic tables to enjoy a lunch or simply sit on the rocky beach and enjoy the sound of the waves and the view.

Beautiful cape with a convenient walking trail along the coast. Most of the paths are paved.

A scenic spot in Shikoku. Plenty of free parking next to tourist information office. You can take a walking trail along the coast, or climb up the view point behind the statue to take in the panoramic view. Some Japanese ryokans along the cape.

We have enjoyed it but found it difficult to locate even a restaurant near there.

This is a beautiful gravel beach formed of weird shaped rocks. l never get tired of looking at that. When I visited this place, there was no one but me. It was relaxing. But, I found the large skeleton of a whale carcass on the beach. I got disgusted.

Akou Tree

4.3
(51)
The Akou Tree, located in Muroto, is a wild subtropical tree designated as a national natural treasure. Its countless roots tightly wrap around rocks, giving the impression of having its own will and enabling it to withstand strong winds along Cape Muroto's coast. The tree's blood vessel-like roots crawl along the rock surface, creating a striking visual impact. This subtropical plant community has been designated as a natural monument and can be accessed within minutes from a nearby parking lot.

Mikurodo Cave

4.0
(504)
Historical landmark
Mikurodo Cave is a renowned site where Kukai, the esteemed monk and founder of Shingon Buddhism, is believed to have practiced asceticism in his youth. Situated along National Route 55 near Cape Muroto, this cave offers a serene atmosphere with views of the sky and ocean. Visitors can explore both Shinmei Cave and Mikuriya Cave, with the former recommended for an initial visit due to its smaller size.
Nice cave. Not that deep but cool.

I often saw pilgrims walking there. I wonder if it used to be right on the edge of the coastline? There is a place nearby where people could take a bath, so I wonder if it was this close to the coastline in the past? It might be nice to meditate while listening to the sound of the waves. But why did he choose Shikoku as a place of training and build 88 temples? Maybe he felt the energy of the plate movements? Raiei Temple

Buddhist temple
Raiei Temple, located on the way to the 24th temple of the Shikoku Sacred Site, is home to a remarkable statue of Kobo Daishi, a prominent figure in Japanese history. The temple features a giant statue of Kobo Daishi and offers tours for visitors to explore it and its interior. Additionally, there are statues of Nirvana and Kukai overlooking the sea.
I'm not at all religious, but it's probably one of the best sights I've seen in japan so far, and I've travelled and seen alot of it, absolutely incredible place that if you are in this area. You should definitely visit!

It seems that the number of foreign tourists has increased recently, but it seems like there are many people who visit the shrine without paying the entrance fee, which is a problem. They lamented that when it comes to paying money, many people go home or ignore them and visit the shrine without consideration. There are no believers at this temple, so managing it is a difficult task. It is very innovative, with large statues of Kukai and Nirvana, mandalas with lights, and stepping sand. The iconic monuments known as the Shintaro Nakaoka statues hold great historical significance. They are remarkable landmarks that symbolize a significant period in history. These sculptures serve as a testament to the memory of Shintaro Nakaoka, an influential figure from the past. The statues themselves stand tall and prominent, attracting visitors and locals alike with their grandeur. As important historical symbols, they carry immense cultural value and have become famous attractions widely recognized for their rich heritage.
(Translated by Google) Shintaro Nakaoka was a member of the Tosa Kinno-to party, who left the domain and went to Choshu when the Tosa Kinno-to party was suppressed, and played an active role in the movement to revere the Emperor and banish the foreigners. Afterwards, he worked towards an armed attack against the shogunate, but he is famous for being assassinated in Kyoto along with Ryoma Sakamoto in November 1993 after the restoration of the Taisei. (Translated by Google) There is a bronze statue of Shintaro Nakaoka, a patriot who was assassinated along with Ryoma Sakamoto at Omiya in Kyoto. The artist is different from the Ryoma statue, and Nakaoka's face is larger, which tends to make him look cute. Many people miss the guide because it suddenly appears and don't realize it's there. I've passed it before, so be careful 😱 supplement In the first place, both Sakamoto and Nakaoka belonged to the Tosa Kinnoto Party, which was led by Hanpeita Takeichi and was originally from Kochi. Mr. Ryoma is associated with the ``Kaientai,'' but Mr. Nakaoka was the leader of the ``Rikuentai,'' and is thought to have decided on their role in the event of a war. Also, the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance (a secret pact between the Satsuma and Choshu clans, who were on equal footing) is often believed to be based on Ryoma Sakamoto's theory, but the theory that Shintaro Nakaoka drafted and coordinated it behind the scenes, and Ryoma's role as the guarantor of the secret pact, is becoming stronger. The graves of both men are enshrined on the same grounds within the Ryozan Gokoku Shrine, near Kyoto Shimizu-san. Also, the hair of the deceased was returned to his wife's family in Kashiwagi village, Kitagawa-go, Aki-gun, and his wife's grave is located next to Mr. Nakaoka's left. They are finally mourning in peace. bronze statue There are 6 locations, including Ryozan Gokoku Shrine, Maruyama Park, 4 locations in Arashiyama, Muroto, and Kitagawa-go. Where is the Ryoma statue in Katsurahama staring? There is also the issue of this, and the Kochi Prefecture website warns against various theories and writes that ``Ryoma and Nakaoka-san are looking at each other,'' but in reality, they are looking toward the southern Pacific Ocean, and this is just glorifying the story and making it more popular, so it's better not to take it seriously and not tell anyone about it. Generally speaking, where you are facing can only be determined with a compass and a map, but Kochi Prefecture's attitude is to use Mr. Sakamoto and Mr. Nakaoka to attract tourism, according to various theories. Where did the masculinity of the Tosa era go? During World War II, monuments and bronze statues were collected and reprocessed into weapons due to the metal recovery order, but the statue of Ryoma Sakamoto in Kochi is dedicated to the guardian deity of the navy. The statue of Shintaro Nakaoka, as the guardian deity of the army, has been spared from collection. There are photographs of Shintaro Nakaoka, with a serious, serious face and a smiling, nice young man's face in contrast. Both express their personalities well.

Cape Muroto Lighthouse Observation Deck

4.5
(23)
Observation deck
The Cape Muroto Lighthouse Observation Deck offers a comfortable and stunning view of the sea and the white lighthouse. Located near the Muroto Misaki Lighthouse parking lot, it's a short walk from there, although finding it might be tricky as it shares a parking lot with a temple for pilgrimage. The observation deck is perfect for enjoying panoramic views, especially if the weather is nice. However, it's recommended not to visit alone in the evening due to its mysterious atmosphere.

It would be nice if there was a place to stop along the way, but there isn't, so just go up and the Muroto Misaki Lighthouse parking lot will be immediately on your right. Please note that it is difficult to find as it is the same as the parking lot of the temple for the pilgrimage. It's a short walk from there. In the evening, the atmosphere is mysterious and I don't recommend going alone as a woman. When you go to the observation deck, the lighthouse is right in front of you. It's a very beautiful and small lighthouse. I think the view would have been nice if the weather had been nice, but unfortunately the sky was cloudy and it was drizzling, so the view was disappointing. I also stopped by a temple along the way. Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Hotsumisakiji Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple located on a steep cliff with stunning sea views. It holds great significance as the 24th temple along the 88 Temple Pilgrimage, and it is believed that Kobo Daishi achieved enlightenment here. The pilgrimage to this temple can be challenging, with options to approach it from different directions. The area around the temple offers lodgings for pilgrims, and there are both walking trails and roads leading up to the sacred site.
The more difficult it is to access a Buddhist temple, the greater the reward (at least that seems to be the norm in Japan)! This glorious temple above Cape Muroto on Shikoku is well worth either the difficult drive or very challenging hike. It's remote location means that there's a good amount of car traffic late in the day, and the road is steep and narrow. Not as bad as some that require the person going uphill to back down until a place can be found for an uphill car to pass, but very dicey nonetheless, especially when people start hurrying to get their goshuincho to the calligrapher before the temple closes (at 5 pm). If you have time, hike the very steep trail from the north side of the cape up to the temple. We hiked halfway down the trail from the temple, and the cool ocean breeze through the old forest was wonderfully refreshing on a warm day. We were able to catch glimpses of the ocean below, and wished we had an entire day to make the hike to the temple and savor the experience.

The angry old man in the office yelled at me because I slid one of the doors the wrong way when I came in. Maybe he was constipated and bitter because he couldn't go to the bathroom or something else was preventing the movement. That's the way his face looked anyway. I guess he couldn't leave his post because he had to stamp the books for the pilgrims. Anyway, I went around looking at the temple. Really beautiful structures here. I actually came for the lighthouse but you know - the Henro is here too. I've been to about eight temples on this (not my) pilgrimage since coming to this island, but I'm not getting a stamp book or wearing white clothes or whatever. I am wearing a yellow button with Mikyan-chan on it. Maybe that will help me get to wherever I need to go in the otherworld. Again anyway, while I was walking around here, that old man was really getting into my head, so I went in front of the office and stared him down through the window for a minute or two. He looked nervous because I am kind of strong-looking I guess which is just a constructed illusion. I wouldn't be violent or anything like that in a Buddhist temple, but I just wanted to feel better and I guess it did make me feel better, so I also guess there's something wrong with me for wanting to act this way. No, I'm certain of this. Maybe I need to walk the Henro like other people do. Nah.

SeaRest Muroto is not just a restaurant, but also a deep seawater spa with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The lunches and rice bowls served at the restaurant feature fresh local ingredients, while the Sunday buffet prepared by a renowned former hotel chef is a crowd favorite. The facility boasts an expansive health promotion pool with various water jets at different heights, offering therapeutic massages overlooking the ocean. Additionally, there are indoor and outdoor deep-sea water baths available for private use.
This is a glorious place. We went back three times A 35m long hydrotherapy pool with a centre divide. Nestled in a charming yet somewhat elusive location, Kamameshi Hatsune is a delightful kettle restaurant that promises an unforgettable culinary experience. Known for its extensive menu, the standout dish here is undoubtedly the Hatsune Kinmedai Donburi. This bowl features both sashimi and teriyaki preparations of the local golden eye snapper, showcasing the chef's exceptional skills. Diners rave about the firm and flavorful sashimi paired with perfectly seasoned teriyaki fish that complements rice beautifully.

This is a restaurant srrving delicious, run by a wonderful family. I cannot recommend the Hatsune Kinmedai donburi enough! It really showcases the technique of the chef, with both a sashimi portion and a teriyaki portion of the iconic and local golden eye snapper fish. It's a bit pricey, but for access to local, fresh fish, served in a community favorite, I think it is worth trying! If trying to eat here during the weekend, definitely try to call and reserve ahead of time!

(Translated by Google) "Simple fresh fish dishes" I ordered Muroto Kinmedon. Oh, the sashimi has a lot of flavor and is very fresh! Furthermore, the teriyaki golden sea bream, which soaked up the sweet sauce, and the delicately flavored soup were also delicious. However, considering the price of 1980 yen, it might be nice to have something a little more...Lunch at other restaurants in Muroto also seems simple🙄. Still, it was a delicious fish lunch with good quality. I visited around lunch time, and it was surprisingly empty so I was seated right away. The interior of the restaurant has a purely Japanese interior with arranged Western music instrumentals, and all five tables are tatami mats. There was also a sense of cleanliness. It would be even more helpful if there was an easy-to-understand menu with photos. Payment methods are cash or PayPay only. The restroom was a bit small, but it was a clean Western-style toilet. There are approximately 5 spaces in the parking lot, making it convenient to visit by car. However, the road up to this point is a little narrow, so you need to be careful. Next time, I would like to try the Kinmedai Kamameshi set meal, which is priced at nearly 4,000 yen, so it's quite impressive😇. One of their themes was “every day is parents day” and I could definitely see families with young children spending a full day here exploring the classrooms, seeing fish close up, reading or playing in the playroom or library. For solo travelers it is a peek into what an elementary school in the 70s and 80s in Japan looked like. Chalk boards, outdated globes, sand and rock projects, it is all here. I was happy to be here for 1.5 hours but if I had some of my students from the pre school I teach English to with me, I’m sure it would have been a day filled with discoveries and surprises. An OHP that is now home to a frog, a handwashing basin where you can now interact with a big and healthy looking crayfish. It was great. Good parking too.

Really interesting place. The school classrooms are left with plenty of the original equipment that’s repurposed to host the new inhabitants. The resulting mashup is lovely - albeit lacking sophistication of many other aquariums. There’s a small section aiming at the ocean plastic pollution as well. Definitely recommend for a quick visit especially with children. Our two year old had a great time there.

Before it was a school, now it is an aquarium, good idea 💡. For visit once and pay 600円 it's fine.

I was surprised at how nice this place is. When I heard it was an aquarium in an old school I didn't think it would be so nicely renovated and prettied up, but it was a really cool experience. The contrast of the schoolhouse and the sea creatures had a nice effect. Fish in the school sinks! Sharks in the school pool! Really neat spot.

Situated on the eastern tip of Kochi Prefecture's Muroto Peninsula, the Muroto Global Geopark Center is a UNESCO-designated site of international geological significance. The area showcases evidence of its earthquake-filled past, with features like trace fossils and marine terraces that tell the story of the peninsula's uplift over thousands of years due to subduction. Visitors can take guided tours in English and rent bicycles for exploration.
I would come back again to see the sunrise in the Pacific Ocean.

There were staff immediately available to help us. One staff member even took the time to give us a brief guided tour. Muroto exists at a spot that might very well experience a catastrophic change within the next 30 years. The way the people of this area cope with that, and have developed through their history, is really amazing.

For those who prefer mountain roads, it's just under 20 minutes via the Muroto Skyline. You can choose between a paid parking lot (where you put 200 yen in a box) a 2-minute walk away, or a free parking lot (apparently part of the fishing port can be used as a parking lot) a 5-minute walk away. There are quite a few stairs, so it's a good idea to climb to the top, pray, and then take in the view of the Pacific Ocean before descending (even if you think there's still more to see, it's good to see things over and over again). Kongōchōji Temple is part of the 88 Temple Buddhist Pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan. It's located between the 24th and 26th temples, making it a popular stop for pilgrims. The temple holds historical significance as the first imperial temple opened by Daishi in 807. Visitors can see traces of ascetic training and a gilt bronze traveling platform tool used by Daishi after completing his training in the Tang Dynasty.

Best temple stay shukubo I’ve had yet. Best value for money in general. Amazing food, perhaps some of the best I’ve had in Japan. Had a beautiful room with a view that was very comfortable. It is a museum where you can understand the related between Japanese and whales. Since ancient time, the Japanese have made whale fishing a part of their lives. In people's hearts, there was gratitude and respect for whales. That's why people used whale beards and skins carefully without wasting everything. There are only Japanese in the world who have used all the whole body of the whale like this. Whaling has been a japanese culture since ancient time. However, it may be difficult to ask all people to understand it. If so, please keep a gentle watch over the Japanese people in this matter. Japanese people think firmly, investigate correctly, and respond sincerely. I wish everyone in the world peace and health. Thank you.

Since it's Golden Week, most places are crowded and many places open until 2:00 pm, so I found this place when I was looking for lunch and was able to enter even after 2:00 pm. This is a rare restaurant where you can eat whale sashimi, tataki, fried tatsuta, etc. When I ate whale at a local supermarket, I didn't think it was delicious, but my colleague said that the whale sashimi he ordered was delicious. Since I'm from Kochi, I had the seared bonito set meal. The tataki was surprisingly meaty and delicious with green onion and garlic slices as condiments. I ate on the second floor, but the air conditioning was off and the water was at room temperature, so I personally consider that a negative point. The guide quickly responded to the parking lot and was able to park several motorcycles. Each competing for their own fat and luster, they performed in secret on top of the sushi rice. When I put my chopsticks in, the squid was as soft as white silk, and the amberjack sparkled like sunlight. I couldn't help but mutter, "Is this the literary world of the sea?" However, by the time I'd finished my miso soup, all the fish had already sunk deep into my stomach without even having time to savor their last bite. There's a saying that lies in "the true joy of travel," and perhaps that feeling was not found in photographs of tourist spots, but in this bowl. Having finished every grain of rice, I felt a little proud. (Translated by Google) I've been here several times now, and the "Beppin Kaisendon" here is really delicious! It's also great that you can add vinegared rice or more ingredients! Also, this was my first time eating "kujira yukhoe" and it was really delicious! It has no taste at all and is probably even more delicious than beef yukhoe! Definitely recommended! Also, the customer service of the female clerk is very polite and heartwarming! I'll come back later!

Dipping it in the accompanying garlic, onion, and green onion sauce is heavenly. Sit at the counter with an ocean view and you'll be able to slurp your way through. Drive In Meotoiwa is a Chinese noodles restaurant located near the sea. It offers a serene and picturesque atmosphere with breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. The eatery provides a sense of solitude, making customers feel at home while enjoying their meals. With no need to prove anything, patrons can relax and experience the essence of summer in their hearts. They can embrace the ebb and flow of life as they bask in the sun's warmth until an exhilarating wave arrives.

The food here was pretty good; it’s an older building and has a diner vibe about it. I think the lady there was nervous because we were foreigners, but they serve up a delicious lunch with tons of side dishes for a really fair price. A nice stop before seeing the Meotoiwa.

(Translated by Google) It was 11 o'clock on a Saturday, so it wasn't full. The inside of the store has a retro feel, with Osaka radio playing and the view of the Pacific Ocean across the national highway from the window, making it feel like time is passing slowly. I ordered the daily set meal without hesitation, and it came out quickly, as if it had been prepared in advance. The sashimi and side dishes were also filling and delicious!

(Translated by Google) Last time I came here on a weekday for lunch and the sashimi set meal was delicious, so this time I brought my family back for lunch on Sunday. There were a lot of customers in the restaurant and there were about two groups waiting, but they said we could be seated immediately if we shared a table, so we were able to be seated right away. I came here with my wife and child and ordered one each of the daily set meal, a sashimi set meal, and ramen. The ramen came out first and had a gentle flavor that even children could eat, with a light and delicious soup. Next, the daily set meal shown in the photo was served. To cut to the chase, the horse mackerel was a decent size, thick, and looked excellent, but when I ate it, it had a fishy smell and still had a lot of scales, so it seemed like it hadn't been properly prepared. It didn't smell so bad that I couldn't eat it, but I think it was probably not very fresh. The scales hadn't been completely removed because the restaurant was busy and they were busy cooking, but personally I found it very disappointing as it wasn't at a level that could be served to customers. Next, my wife's sashimi set meal was supposed to arrive while I and my child were eating, but what was brought was the daily special. We told them that we had ordered the sashimi set meal and asked them to remake it, and when we waited a while, to our surprise, the sashimi set meal ordered by a young couple who had entered the restaurant after us was served before ours, and my wife's sashimi set meal never arrived. It was getting late so we canceled and went to pay, but in the end we were almost charged for the sashimi set meal we hadn't eaten, so the waitress pointed this out to the proprietress and we didn't have to pay, but there was no apology for the mistake in serving the food or for almost making us pay for a set meal we hadn't eaten. This was absolutely unacceptable, so I said a few words, but I'll probably never come here again. They also made mistakes asking each table about the other tables' orders, and it seems there were scales on the fish on the sashimi set meal ordered by the customer next to us. If they're so busy they can't keep up, I think they should hire more staff or make sure customers write down their table numbers and orders properly when ordering. Also, the lights in the room had gone out and they were turning them back on, but it was quite dim and after a while they must have noticed as they silently turned the brightness back on, surprising the other customers. No matter how busy they are, cutting corners on cooking is out of the question. I clean fish and do all kinds of fish dishes, and if they had been more careful this wouldn't happen. It's such a shame as the restaurant is near the sea and has a nice atmosphere and view.

(Translated by Google) I came here because someone recommended it to me: "If you want sashimi, this is the place." I ordered the daily set meal of local fish sashimi, which was thick and came with several side dishes. I came here for lunch, but if it were dinner, I could easily have two large bottles of beer and a glass of hot shochu. The location is right in front of the Meoto Iwa rocks and the Pacific Ocean. It's far from my house, but it's a restaurant I'd like to return to. (Translated by Google) This is a great place to eat for bus travelers. The portions are generous and filling, and the miso soup has an orange flavor, which is something I've never had before. It's very unique. It's very close to Married Couple Rocks. On our way back, while waiting for the bus by the road, the owner and his wife came over to check in on us and asked what time the bus would arrive. They were very kind.
