Wow! What a place!! This is on the Ohenro pilgrimage trail so the walking paths are very well managed. I walked along the beach path for about 30 minutes, went inside the two caves used by Kukai where he was enlightened and took on the name Kukai (Sky and Sea) because of the sky and the sea that were visible from the caves and brought enlightenment to him. There are several lookout structures, lots of interesting rocks and since this is a geo park area, a lot of interesting rock formations forged over thousands of years by the Kochi ocean. This would be about a half day visit but if you or someone you are with likes rocks and looking at rock formations, a vast ocean and a multitude of different types of ships passing by, you might need more time here. I think the Muroto area would be perfect as a three night four day escape from whatever is bringing you stress at the moment.
A good walk along the rocks!
Scenic. Worth a short visit.
(Translated by Google) Being a cape, it's a long journey, but I got the impression that it wasn't worth it. Because wherever you look, there's sea. Perhaps it was the effect of the earthquake near the Kamchatka Peninsula (after the tsunami warning and advisory was lifted), or perhaps because it's a cape, the waves were big and had an impact.
(Translated by Google) I was able to get there by taking a bus and a DMV (Dual Mode Vehicle). We arrived at night, so we started our walk early the next morning. The sunrise at the southern tip of Cape Muroto had a special beauty. Many of the surrounding flora have a tropical feel, making me realize once again that there are many different places in Japan. (Original) バスとDMV(Dual Mode Vehicle)を乗り継いで到達する事が出来ました。
(Translated by Google) Since this was the purpose of my visit, I was glad to be able to experience nature. The cape itself was quite rugged and in its natural state. Also, there was a lighthouse about a 10-minute drive up. It was a nice walk up the hill from the parking lot, which was quite a workout.
(Translated by Google) The scenery is beautiful, but more than anything, just walking along the rocks while listening to the sound of the waves is refreshing. The sound of the waves is similar to that of the beach at Ras Al Jinz, where we watched sea turtles lay their eggs.

Slide 1 of 8
The more difficult it is to access a Buddhist temple, the greater the reward (at least that seems to be the norm in Japan)! This glorious temple above Cape Muroto on Shikoku is well worth either the difficult drive or very challenging hike. It's remote location means that there's a good amount of car traffic late in the day, and the road is steep and narrow. Not as bad as some that require the person going uphill to back down until a place can be found for an uphill car to pass, but very dicey nonetheless, especially when people start hurrying to get their goshuincho to the calligrapher before the temple closes (at 5 pm). If you have time, hike the very steep trail from the north side of the cape up to the temple. We hiked halfway down the trail from the temple, and the cool ocean breeze through the old forest was wonderfully refreshing on a warm day. We were able to catch glimpses of the ocean below, and wished we had an entire day to make the hike to the temple and savor the experience.
The angry old man in the office yelled at me because I slid one of the doors the wrong way when I came in. Maybe he was constipated and bitter because he couldn't go to the bathroom or something else was preventing the movement. That's the way his face looked anyway. I guess he couldn't leave his post because he had to stamp the books for the pilgrims. Anyway, I went around looking at the temple. Really beautiful structures here. I actually came for the lighthouse but you know - the Henro is here too. I've been to about eight temples on this (not my) pilgrimage since coming to this island, but I'm not getting a stamp book or wearing white clothes or whatever. I am wearing a yellow button with Mikyan-chan on it. Maybe that will help me get to wherever I need to go in the otherworld. Again anyway, while I was walking around here, that old man was really getting into my head, so I went in front of the office and stared him down through the window for a minute or two. He looked nervous because I am kind of strong-looking I guess which is just a constructed illusion. I wouldn't be violent or anything like that in a Buddhist temple, but I just wanted to feel better and I guess it did make me feel better, so I also guess there's something wrong with me for wanting to act this way. No, I'm certain of this. Maybe I need to walk the Henro like other people do. Nah.
One of the most beautiful temples part of the pilgrimage. Very peaceful area and with old temples preserved. Beautiful!
This temple on the top of the mountain is nice to visit, just at beside there is a lighthouse and huge view of the ocean, one path until there took 20 minutes by walk.
It's a nice lil temple, in combination with the view from the parking lot or the lighthouse a good place to visit if you're nearby
It is a beautiful ride down the coast to get here, and of course the scenery is great. The problem was that it isn't very accommodating for cyclists, I never found the place to park my bike, I just locked it to a bar in the parking lot.
Facing south to the Pacific Ocean, this temple has a spectacular location. Be sure to also visit Tonohama beach nearby where you too can find your own ocean-washed stone. I've kept mine.
One of my favorite temples in this area

A great place to have lunch. A fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean right in front of you, with a beer in hand and grilled prawn and sashimi don (rice). The whale meat is disappointing though. Not worth trying, it's frozen.
Great selection of food and very beautiful view. Staff is very friendly, helpful and kind
Small but great products. Friendly staff and even if it is far from city you can find what you want.
Your average Japanese road station but with amazing sunset views.
Fantastic aice cream and local market
Nice stop with ocean views.
(Translated by Google) I visited as part of a stamp rally. The sea is right in front of the parking lot, so you can take a break while listening to the sound of the waves. There is no door to the entrance to the toilet. The sensor-type lights don't react well to the private rooms at the back, so the lights go out. Be careful, as they don't turn on even if you move. Local souvenirs are available for purchase.

Awesome spot and worth the rapidly rising and winding drive, and the 10 minute or so mostly uphill walk past the Hotsumisakiji temple which you can visit on the way back. High enough to see the curve on the horizon. A view to die for.
(Translated by Google) The Muroto Cape Lighthouse, which stands on the cliffs of Cape Muroto, is a historic lighthouse that was lit in 1899. It is one of the few lighthouses that still use the largest first-class Fresnel lens in Japan. The lens has a spectacular presence, and it is worth a visit even if you are not a lighthouse fan. From the observation space, you can see the vast Pacific Ocean, and if the weather is good, you can enjoy a spectacular view with the horizon clearly visible. The contrast between the white lighthouse and the deep blue sea is beautiful, and it is also recommended as a photo spot. The approach to the lighthouse is a hilly road, but it is well maintained and easy to walk. It is convenient to access by car, but it is also possible to walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse. Take your time and enjoy the view. This review was created on chat GPT. From here on, my impressions. If the weather is good, the view is amazing. I recommend it.

Although it is located on the top of Cape Muroto, you cannot see Cape Muroto and the sea from Sai Mizakiji Temple. You need to go to the exit of the temple, close to the side of the downhill trail, and there is a driveway next to it. There is an inconspicuous small sign. You can reach the lighthouse in about 5 minutes. The lighthouse itself cannot be visited, but looking at the lighthouse, you can see Cape Muroto and the majestic Pacific Ocean in the distance. When the weather is good, the blue sky and white clouds are magnificent. Because it is at a high place, the view is more charming than looking from below. If you come to Sai Mizakiji Temple, you must not miss this overlooking spot. The overall rating is 4.5 stars. It is a first-class lighthouse with a 2.6-meter diameter "first-class Fresnel lens," and is one of five in Japan. It is one of the "50 Best Lighthouses of Japan," and is designated as an A-rank preserved lighthouse by the Japan Coast Guard. This lens has been damaged several times. ・The lens was damaged by the strong winds of the fierce typhoon "Muroto Typhoon" (1934), which had an air pressure of 911.6 hectopascals when it made landfall. {It is counted as one of the three major typhoons of the Showa era, along with the Makurazaki Typhoon (1945) and the Ise Bay Typhoon (1959).} ・The lens was also damaged in the "Nankai earthquake" in 1946 and has been repaired, but the explanation said that the iron lighthouse will remain as it was at the time. The second oldest iron lighthouse in Japan (1899) [In March 1945, at the end of the Pacific War, a US aircraft carrier task force approached 80 km off the coast of Cape Muroto. The lighthouse lens was damaged by machine gun fire from a US carrier-based aircraft. (Four bullet holes are still engraved on the lighthouse today.)] *From Wikipedia. I looked for it, but I couldn't find any bullet holes. It might be on the sea side. The shortest route. You can get to Cape Muroto Lighthouse from National Route 55, but it's quite difficult, so there is a dedicated parking lot facing the road at the top of "Saimizakiji Temple" from the Muroto Skyline side. (Translated by Google) Shintaro Nakaoka was a member of the Tosa Kinno-to party, who left the domain and went to Choshu when the Tosa Kinno-to party was suppressed, and played an active role in the movement to revere the Emperor and banish the foreigners. In cooperation with Ryoma Sakamoto, he worked hard to conclude the Satsuma-cho alliance, which was concluded in 1866. In the same year, he organized the Rikuentai and became its captain. Afterwards, he worked towards an armed attack against the shogunate, but he is famous for being assassinated in Kyoto along with Ryoma Sakamoto in November 1993 after the restoration of the Taisei. (Translated by Google) There is a bronze statue of Shintaro Nakaoka, a patriot who was assassinated along with Ryoma Sakamoto at Omiya in Kyoto. The artist is different from the Ryoma statue, and Nakaoka's face is larger, which tends to make him look cute. Many people miss the guide because it suddenly appears and don't realize it's there. I've passed it before, so be careful 😱 supplement In the first place, both Sakamoto and Nakaoka belonged to the Tosa Kinnoto Party, which was led by Hanpeita Takeichi and was originally from Kochi. Mr. Ryoma is associated with the ``Kaientai,'' but Mr. Nakaoka was the leader of the ``Rikuentai,'' and is thought to have decided on their role in the event of a war. Also, the Satsuma-Choshu Alliance (a secret pact between the Satsuma and Choshu clans, who were on equal footing) is often believed to be based on Ryoma Sakamoto's theory, but the theory that Shintaro Nakaoka drafted and coordinated it behind the scenes, and Ryoma's role as the guarantor of the secret pact, is becoming stronger. The graves of both men are enshrined on the same grounds within the Ryozan Gokoku Shrine, near Kyoto Shimizu-san. Also, the hair of the deceased was returned to his wife's family in Kashiwagi village, Kitagawa-go, Aki-gun, and his wife's grave is located next to Mr. Nakaoka's left. They are finally mourning in peace. bronze statue There are 6 locations, including Ryozan Gokoku Shrine, Maruyama Park, 4 locations in Arashiyama, Muroto, and Kitagawa-go. Where is the Ryoma statue in Katsurahama staring? There is also the issue of this, and the Kochi Prefecture website warns against various theories and writes that ``Ryoma and Nakaoka-san are looking at each other,'' but in reality, they are looking toward the southern Pacific Ocean, and this is just glorifying the story and making it more popular, so it's better not to take it seriously and not tell anyone about it. Generally speaking, where you are facing can only be determined with a compass and a map, but Kochi Prefecture's attitude is to use Mr. Sakamoto and Mr. Nakaoka to attract tourism, according to various theories. Where did the masculinity of the Tosa era go? During World War II, monuments and bronze statues were collected and reprocessed into weapons due to the metal recovery order, but the statue of Ryoma Sakamoto in Kochi is dedicated to the guardian deity of the navy. The statue of Shintaro Nakaoka, as the guardian deity of the army, has been spared from collection. There are photographs of Shintaro Nakaoka, with a serious, serious face and a smiling, nice young man's face in contrast. Both express their personalities well.

Book in advance. Good experience with kids. Trainers are super friendly and caring. Kids really enjoyed it. It gets hot in summer to wear protective clothing and sunscreen.
Worth to join the activity of "Hello Dolphin". The dolphins obey the instructions and you can enjoy the interactive activities with dolphin.
It is the first time to touch dolphins, they are so friendly like small girls. It will be great if we can swim with them next time.
Really really nice. We totally enjoyed swimming with dolphins. The trainer were very nice and made the experience total fun.
Nice experience, a bit long driving distance but it worths!
This place is cruel. Three dolphins in a tiny pool. One that has been there for 10 years. This place should get shut down and the dolphins released. Only went to see the conditions the dolphins were living in. SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!

Things are finally settling down. It's just over 6km from the previous temple. The journey is easy, as it's on a flat road. ♫ After passing through the gate, there's a short climb to the main hall. This temple was founded by Kobo Daishi because the shape of the mountain resembles the "Hoju" (treasure) in the temple's name. The principal deity is the Enmei Jizo Bodhisattva, carved by Kobo Daishi. Legend has it that when the main hall caught fire, the principal deity transformed into a monk, alerting the villagers and saving the day. Apparently there are 125 steps. I didn't have time to count them (lol). The Niomon Gate, the inner gate, is halfway up the stairs. The space in front of the main hall is small, making it difficult to take a front-on photo of the hall. You can see the Pacific Ocean from in front of the main hall 🎵. A beautiful view. The Daishi Hall is at the bottom of the stairs. It's interesting that the staff at the donation office come and extinguish any lit candles with a fan. They also pull out the incense sticks, even if they're still lit. Cleaning is such a pain, after all. It felt like my wish had been snuffed out. Beautiful temple, difficult drive or hike. Close to Cape Muroto.
Best temple stay shukubo I’ve had yet. Best value for money in general. Amazing food, perhaps some of the best I’ve had in Japan. Had a beautiful room with a view that was very comfortable. The 6am prayer ceremony was nice and intimate. The temple grounds themselves are magnificent. I’d come back to Shikoku just to stay here a few nights.
I've stayed at fifteen or twenty temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage and at Koyasan. This had the most beautiful rooms and the most wonderful dinner of any of them. (I LOVE fish, especially sashimi and katsuo no tataki.) (Don't eat there if you don't like fish!) The view was also wonderful.

Good place for refreshing.
(Translated by Google) On a summer vacation trip in 2025. I thought it was a roadside station, but it turned out to be a sea station! I walked around the area and noticed there was only a restaurant and no shops, but when I looked more closely, I saw it was a sea station! I had jumped to conclusions. But all the meals I had here were very filling and delicious. (Translated by Google) The seafood bowl I had here was really amazing. It is filled with plenty of fresh seafood and tastes great. The price is also very reasonable and the cost performance is perfect. The daily specials looked delicious, but I think I made the right choice in choosing the seafood bowl. However, there may be a bit of a wait during peak hours. It may be unavoidable since it is a popular place, but depending on the timing, you may be concerned about the waiting time. Still, the taste is worth the wait, so I think it's a good idea to visit when you have time. Overall, this is a spot I would definitely recommend for seafood lovers. I would like to visit again next time. I would come back again to see the sunrise in the Pacific Ocean.
Good information about regional geology and earthquake detection. Toilets are clean
Beautiful place to visit. Very helpful staff. Thank you
Very informative in geology and local culture. I arrived a bit late and so most restaurants were not serving lunch, but staff of tourist information helped me to call around nearby restaurants and I managed to fill my belly well. Thank you!
There were staff immediately available to help us. One staff member even took the time to give us a brief guided tour. Muroto exists at a spot that might very well experience a catastrophic change within the next 30 years. The way the people of this area cope with that, and have developed through their history, is really amazing.
The rock formations here are amazing and the ocean is so beautiful! It's nice to walk along the coast. A pleasant stop.
Nice place to understand how geotectonic influencing life

It's small but cool. The vr is interesting, would love it to be longer and interactive!
A super interesting place to visit with amazing English translations, a variety of artifacts, and a cool virtual reality exhibit.
It is a museum where you can understand the related between Japanese and whales. Since ancient time, the Japanese have made whale fishing a part of their lives. In people's hearts, there was gratitude and respect for whales. That's why people used whale beards and skins carefully without wasting everything. There are only Japanese in the world who have used all the whole body of the whale like this. Whaling has been a japanese culture since ancient time. However, it may be difficult to ask all people to understand it. If so, please keep a gentle watch over the Japanese people in this matter. Japanese people think firmly, investigate correctly, and respond sincerely. I wish everyone in the world peace and health. Thank you.
This is a small museum and one might think to pass by without stopping. However, of you have time it's quite enjoyable. They have a free VR experience where you can swim with whales. Bilingual displays. A lot of information. It really let me into the history of the area. Perfect activity on a rainy day!
It's small but some of the Bakamatsu/Meiji period paintings are huge and stunning. It was well worth the 500 yen entry price to just see those. There is also some go information about whaling in Japan and the evolution of whales. There is also a lot of English available on the exhibitions.
(Translated by Google) You can learn about the history of Muroto and whales. It's mainly about whaling. It's a small museum packed with history. I'm glad I went. You can also see a big whale model. (Translated by Google) Are whales a familiar sight on the Pacific coast? They are virtually unrelated to life in the Seto Inland Sea. It is amazing to think that in the past, people would catch huge whales in small wooden boats. A considerable number of people must have died.
