Sights & Landmarks
Marugame Castle, also known as Marugame-jo, is a 16th-century hilltop fortress located on Mt. Kameyama in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is renowned for its well-preserved original wooden donjon and impressive stone walls, with the inner moat featuring a towering wall that stands over 60 meters tall – the tallest of its kind in Japan.
Super cool place. You can walk around the grounds and just enjoy nature. A lot of people outside just enjoying the nature. The view from the top is gorgeous, especially during the sunset. The best time is visit is definitely during the sunset except the castle won't be open sadly. So you kinda have to pick and choose but that's okay.
Joshua P — Google review
The castle is small but the location is good in the middle of the city. The view is beautiful when you are at the top, you can also see the long bridge going to Okayama. It's nice to relax at the top, just accompany it with a cold beer, that's ok.
Rimon G — Google review
The park itself is free, including the steep walkway up to the castle (somehow it makes me miss staircases). You only pay to go into the castle, which is also where all the stamps are. The castle itself is small, but the park, the surrounding walls and the gates make for a great experience. Be mindful of the closing time though, as it is fairly early. There's a free parking lot where the museum is (but it was closed today, sadly). Although the parking lot was almost full when I arrived, there was no sign of any tour buses. So I still got an overall quiet experience, which was much appreciated. Don't forget to visit the little gift shop at the bottom of the uphill walkway, as they have a cute little fan shop, as well as some Yadon/Slowpoke merch (mascot of the prefecture).

Visiting Marugame Castle is truly a remarkable experience! Steeped in history, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the past that's unlike any other. I can’t wait to share more about the captivating stories and breathtaking views that make this place so special!

This is a small castle, open from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. Even after hours, you can still enter the park (though not the castle tower) to enjoy amazing sunset views
Ka C — Google review
The walkway is absolutely delightful! The walk-up is a little tiring, but the view is perfect! If you walk up just before sunset, you'll have the perfect picture of marugame City!

Castle on a mountain! There is a steep climb up, but the view is amazing! Small tower on top, but it was closed when I arrived (Monday).
Roger A — Google review
One of the 12 original remaining castles in Japan. The castle itself is very small with steep stairs to get up and it's a steep hike to get up to the castle itself, but the view of Marugame and the stone walls are impressive.

Red Pumpkin is a striking contemporary art installation by Yayoi Kusama, located near the main port of Naoshima. Similar to the iconic Yellow Pumpkin on the island, this massive spotty sculpture allows visitors to walk inside and even poke their heads out of its polka-dot holes. At night, it illuminates beautifully.
A beautiful and distinctive sculpture. When I was looking at what people were doing around the statue, I thought to myself that it was actually a playground for adults. It's nice that art can bring out the playfulness in people.

Seeing this in person was surreal. It was beautiful and with backdrop of the sea it was so lovely. Love how people can just freely take a picture with it.

Always so much joy and fun to see the wonderful Yayoi Kusama pieces ❤️🖤💛🖤🧚 See the pumpkin when it gets dark, its a hell of a pumpkin 🎃 Visit the yellow pumpkin on the other side of Naoshima, enjoy the beautiful beach there. The local bus will take your from one pumpkin to another:D

The red pumpkin is just as magnificent as the yellow pumpkin. If you’re a fan of Kusama Yayoi, it’s a pilgrimage to visit both pumpkins.

Both Yayoi Kusama and ginger ale are very special to me and so it was a pleasure to enjoy my favourite beverage in front of my favourite artist. I haven’t seen the pumpkins in person before and so it was wonderful to see while drinking simulated gourd in the form of the melon flavoured ginger ale. Spectacular experience

Travelled from Okayama Station. takes about 1.5hr in total. If you have a tight schedule like me cos I reserved tickets at Chichu Museum, suggest you keep to the right of the ferry at disembarkation so you can make it to the town bus stop quickly especially if it's a crowded day. The bus is small and I had to take the 2nd bus as it was crowded. The red pumpkin is at the ferry terminal whilst the yellow pumpkin is at the last stop on the town bus - Tsutsuji-so.

Upon arrival on the island, it's the first artwork you'll spot! Often, it has a crowd trying to take photos with it. If you're patient, let those crowd finish first while you look at other things. I promise by then you can almost have the whole pumpkin to yourself!

Sakaide Station is the first stop when crossing the Seto Ohashi Bridge on the Marine Liner. It's a bustling station with various amenities, including a Joyful family restaurant and a public bathhouse. The station serves as a meeting point for trains heading to Takamatsu from Okayama and trains bound for Matsuyama/Kochi from Takamatsu.

The Seto Ohashi Bridge, also known as the Great Seto Bridge, is a remarkable engineering feat that spans the Seto Inland Sea, connecting Okayama on Honshu and Kagawa prefecture on Shikoku. This two-tiered bridge boasts a length of 13.1 kilometers, making it the world's longest of its kind. The upper tier accommodates highway traffic while the lower tier carries railway tracks for the Seto-Okashi line.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Seto Great Bridge, and it was an unforgettable experience! The sunset view from the bridge was absolutely breathtaking. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky was painted in a mesmerizing array of colors, creating a serene and picturesque scene. The combination of the stunning sunset and the impressive architecture of the bridge made for a perfect moment of tranquility and beauty. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend timing your visit to catch the sunset – it's a sight you won't want to miss!

This bridge, spanning from Kagawa Prefecture to Okayama Prefecture, is divided into three sections, crossing an island in the middle. The entire structure is grand and breathtaking, with stunning views of the surrounding islands and passing ships. The scenery alone makes it well worth a visit.

Bridge connecting Okayama Prefecture (Honshu) and Kagawa Prefecture (Shikoku), cutting across the Seto Inland Sea. Both vehicles and rail networks use this bridge, with the Marine Liner by JR Shikoku running across the bridge every half an hour, in both directions. On a clear day, you can enjoy the views of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands when crossing the bridge.

Udon noodle restaurant
Nestled about a 20-minute stroll from JR Kamogawa Station, Gamō Udon is a beloved spot for those craving traditional udon dishes. This charming open-air kiosk draws both locals and visitors alike, often resulting in long lines during lunchtime. The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Kake Udon, featuring firm noodles bathed in a flavorful dashi broth that has captured many hearts.
There’s something fun about queuing up for udon and picking your own topping! Very nice variety of tempura items - eggs, inari, croquette, pumpkin, shrimp, etc Will recommend to everyone visiting Takamatsu - but watch out for the queue! We took about 15mins after arriving at 830am! Food isn’t too expensive as well 😆 There are plenty of seats both inside and outside the restaurant too! Plenty of parking too!
Li S — Google review
The inside of the restaurant is small, but the food is delicious. It's chewy, but soft enough to be eaten. This is the most delicious udon. If you're not sure how to order, a small warm bowl of udon is the norm. Please choose tempura according to your preference
Shuhei N — Google review
Visited in late July as part of my udon quest in this udon land. It took about 30 minutes from queuing to ordering on a Tuesday under the scorching summer sun, but umbrellas were thoughtfully provided at the front of the shop for waiting customers. The noodles were absolutely delicious, with a smooth, slippery texture that still had a nice chew. The chef was clearly skilled and meticulous, making sure each bowl came out just right. Since we had already over-ordered fried food at the previous udon shop, I kept it simple here with just noodles topped with aburaage (fried bean curd) and an onsen egg, and it was perfect. The shop itself is tiny, so we ate on the bench outside. Prices were surprisingly cheap, and the noodles here really felt on another level compared to the first stop. I would love to revisit if I get the chance.

We took train from Takamatsu and walk 1.2KM from Kameoka Station to the shop. Reach before 11am already see long queue. But the queue move fast.. We ordered the smallest bowl of udon cist 180 yen. Top up with kakiage, ika geso, tofu skin and half boil egg. Paid then add soup by ourself. The udon is super tasty. Worth the effort to go. Give it a try when you in Takamatsu. 😋😋😋

The best Udon I had in Japan. With it’s simplicity you could tell how amazing the broth and the fresh noodles were. I had it with tempura shrimp, which was delicious. When we arrived, the long line seemed tedious- but honestly it went rather quickly.

Really delicious!!!! The noodles is like mochi with nice soup. You can order the size, hot or cold udon, and select your own tempura. It had a lot of queue but not waiting too long so you need to try one :) Cheap price!

Delicious udon from this local tiny restaurant run out of a house. Perfect udon and great tasting tempura. Get here early because people will line up for an hour or more for some of this amazing shop. And it's ridiculously inexpensive. My bowl of udon, with two pieces of tempura added (one shrimp and one chicken) in July 2023 cost the equivalent of $2.92 (US)! What a bargain! If you are ever in this part of Japan definitely come and eat here.

Udon noodle restaurant
Nestled in the charming Yogita Town of Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, Yamashita Udon is a beloved eatery that has become synonymous with delicious udon noodles. This casual spot, reminiscent of a cozy shed, is renowned for its bukkake-udon—cold noodles topped with chilled dashi sauce. Visitors often find themselves waiting in line during holidays to savor the rich flavors of their thick udon noodles, which are cooked to perfection in a large pot.
Very old place with same authentic taste and home made food. It’s located at the bank of a small river and foot hills. Old machinery is used to cook the food in Japanese style. Must visit this place

(Translated by Google) This Sanuki udon restaurant is loved by locals and tourists alike, and is known for its thick noodles and firm texture. It's not flashy, but it has a simple, old-fashioned atmosphere, and its charm lies in the peaceful countryside surrounding it, where you can savor your meal. It's self-service, so you can choose your toppings to your liking, giving you a great deal of freedom; you can simply enjoy the broth, or add fried foods and a soft-boiled egg for a more substantial meal. As it's a little away from the tourist center, it's quiet, and even if there is a line, the turnover is quick. The prices are reasonable, so you'll find yourself wanting seconds. Eating with locals while experiencing everyday life in Sanuki will be a great memory of your trip, and I think this is a must-visit restaurant for anyone who wants to fully enjoy the richness of the noodles. The noodles are thick and chewy, and the broth is cold but has a gentle flavor. This time I had it with shrimp tempura, which was fragrant and went perfectly with the udon. The sight of the chefs boiling the udon one after another in large pots is impressive, and even the wait is enjoyable. The restaurant is spacious and has plenty of seating, but the operation seems a little slow and it takes a while for the food to be served. During my recent journey through Shikoku, I made a delightful stop at the Yoshima PA Food Court on Respect for the Aged Day. Despite the air conditioning being out of order, which made it a bit warm inside, I enjoyed a leisurely lunch with my wife. In addition to locally produced dishes such as Olive's famous salmon, free-range chicken, beef, and pork dishes, as well as Sanuki's specialty bone-in chicken, this food court also offers pork cutlets, hamburgers, ramen, curry, and more. It's after 2pm on a Sunday in December. The last day of a three-day, two-night trip. The store is located in Yoshima PA. There is also a udon noodle shop and an ice cream shop next door. It is a popular spot with a large parking lot and an observation deck. You can see Seto Ohashi Bridge and the Seto Inland Sea. You can also eat outside on the terrace. In fact, you can eat it at the table next to the udon noodles. Each store has different business hours, and you cannot eat udon at the food court during the hours when the udon restaurants are open (10:00 to 16:00, *until 17:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays). The food court is open until late. The food court side has regular table seats, and is a suitable space for receiving the food you order. I ordered the olive beef sukiyaki bowl with miso soup (1,500 yen) from the ticket vending machine. <In-store description> Olive beef ribs from Kagawa Prefecture are used. Rich, refreshing and soft flesh. It was served in about 10 minutes after ordering. I went to my family waiting at the udon restaurant. It's a sukiyaki bowl, but the rice is about 1 cup. Finished with sukiyaki-flavored meat, onions, konjac, green onions, and egg yolk. Also, miso soup with pickles and white miso. The rice was delicious and well balanced with the meat and eggs. The seasoning of sukiyaki is more salty than sweet and spicy. Since the meat was pork belly, I thought it would be a bit fatty, but it wasn't that rich and had a mellow flavor, but it was salty, so I guess it depends on your taste. Personally, with this quality of meat, I didn't have to make it into sukiyaki, it was enough with yakiniku sauce and a light salt and pepper, but I feel like they wanted to expand the menu. This trip started and ended with Olive Beef. I would like to pay attention to olive-based brands from now on. It was already packed with customers at 7 AM. You can order your own portion of udon, and they offer a wide variety of toppings. We started off with a toast of cup sake, enjoying the "potato salad" that the taxi driver raved about. The udon noodles were chewy and firm, and the broth, perhaps made with dried sardine broth, was also delicious. The Lawson right in front of it allows large vehicles to park, and there are many logistics companies nearby, so I guess a lot of the customers are drivers. I chose a cold warm egg and meat bukkake (small) and geta foot tempura. I ordered the cold bukkake, but it was really lukewarm. The geta foot tempura had an extremely thick batter. The self-service cold water was also really lukewarm. It was a bit disappointing. Thank you for the meal. It my first time finding a small snack bar that have a cool summer vibes. Tokoroten is really delicious, I ate with the kinako one. You can purchase omiyage too in the shop across the street, it is a same shop. It was not crowded because I went on Wednesday. Will comeback again soon.

(Translated by Google) August 23, 2025, was my first visit. I'd always been curious about their famous tokoroten (sweetened tokoroten) because of the signs. This time, I came all the way to Kagawa specifically to try this place. The roads are narrow, but luckily we managed to avoid oncoming traffic and arrived at the parking lot. There was plenty of space for cars. We arrived in about a minute. The menu was extensive, but since there were only two of us, we ordered two types of tokoroten (mustard vinegar soy sauce and kudzu mochi) and the happy ice cream anmitsu. The tokoroten was cooked right in front of us, which was a delight. The anmitsu was delivered to our table later with a numbered ticket. The location was open, not enclosed, with the sounds of water in the forest and the pleasant breeze from the fan. Both the tokoroten and anmitsu were excellent, and while it's just tokoroten, it's still tokoroten. I was impressed by the addictive tokoroten, which made me want to eat it again. On my way back, I bought some souvenirs at the main store across the street, and the staff were all very friendly. It was a perfect experience, a perfect experience for the first time in a while.

It was topped with plenty of brown sugar syrup, which was a nice change from the usual vinegar and soy sauce. My boss ordered the brown sugar syrup and kinako, which also looked delicious. I'd like to try that next time.

(Translated by Google) Arrived on 8/24/2025 just before 11am. I saw tokoroten on TikTok and had never tried it before, so I decided to try it. I ordered a small plate of "Yasohachi Specialty" (mustard and vinegar soy sauce flavor). It was interesting to see it being pushed out of the wooden frame. However, my wife and I couldn't stand the unique taste, which was similar to that of igisu. It was very painful to eat. I guess some people who like it will love it... Both were delicious, perfect for resetting my palate after the udon. It was a wonderful time, surrounded by nature and completely private. Thank you for the meal. 😋 I'll definitely be back for more udon.
