Varna

Varna is a port city and seaside resort on Bulgaria's Black Sea, next to the coastal resorts of Golden Sands, St. Konstantin and Albena. It's famous for the "Gold of Varna," 6,000-year-old Thracian jewelry discovered in a necropolis, which is displayed inside the Archaeological Museum, along with Greek, Roman and Ottoman antiquities. A bar-lined waterfront promenade fronts 19th-century Primorski Park.

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled within the serene landscapes of northeastern Bulgaria, Aladzha Monastery is a captivating medieval Orthodox Christian cave monastery that offers a glimpse into the past. Perched on a 25-meter high cliff in a protected forest area adjacent to Golden Sands Nature Park, this historical site once served as a sanctuary for hermit monks during medieval times. The name "Aladzha," derived from Turkish meaning "colorful," reflects the vibrant hues of its ancient wall paintings.
5 stars out of five for me. This monastery is definitely worth a visit. Breathtakingly beautiful. By visiting, you will be able to understand the life of these hermit monks. There is also a little museum (student discount available) and there are some catacombs nearby. If you go, I would suggest taking the forest path (check it out on maps). It's a 50 minute hike, but it will allow you to walk immersed in a wonderful angle of nature.
Stefano R — Google review
Interesting place with unique architecture, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us a lot of interesting stories. There is a great view from the second floor of the monastery.
Hristina S — Google review
A very nice morning walk. I took a bus to main road underneath, took a long stroll through the forest and entered the museum and monastery. It’s beautiful scenic and recommended.
Ofer E — Google review
Warning, walk up the pathway through the Forrest or drive or taxi, don't take a public bus like I did which stops a long walk away along a busy road very dangerous. 5 lev to get in, small museum, nice interesting place.
Miserable I — Google review
I learned so much and really enjoyed this historical educational opportunity. Thank you for maintaining an affordable price to encourage cultural exploration by visitors to Bulgaria. Highly recommend. Wear shoes with good traction and take your time so you can really appreciate the details that they provide.
Rhonda B — Google review
A pleasant shelter for when you feel warm by the sea. The monastery resembles its more famous counterpart in Vardzia, Georgia.
Radovan K — Google review
On the weekends it is super busy so we went on a regular week day. It has a nice big area to walk around in the forest and nice view from the top.
Viktoria N — Google review
I took the bus 109 which drops you off around 3km before the monastery. The hike through the forest is nice and the rock monastery itself is very interesting. There is a small museum onsite explaining the history of Christianity in the region as well as the works of the Archeological Society (foundwd by the Skorpil brothers in the 19th century) that led the excavations of, among others, this monastery. There are catacombs onsite (about 700 meters walking distance from the monastery), which I unfortunately failed to visit.

Historical landmark
The Roman Baths of Odessos, also known as the Big Thermae, are a well-preserved complex dating back to the second century. They were once a popular gathering place for locals and featured amenities such as a heated pool, changing rooms, and spaces for sports and exercise. Today, visitors can explore the ruins at their leisure as ongoing excavations continue to reveal more about this ancient site.
It was closed when I went but you can see everything from the street. Cool to look at.
Jon M — Google review
Really great place to visit if you love history , cost just 5 lev but need to be cash .
Małgorzata T — Google review
It's a great heritage from the former generation. Well preserved as a ruined condition. Entering inside is much moe better, but if not available outside the view, also quite nice!!
Brian J — Google review
The baths were the heart of the ancient town of Odessos. Today they are in fairly good shape with the excavations still ongoing; it is great that one can wander around exploring the ruins at their leisure. Tickets are sold at the entrance, price is 5 lev.
Simeon G — Google review
Very beautiful town with wooden buildings and stone floors. It really brings you back into the past. The architecture is amazing and I definitely recommend visiting this place. A nice atmosphere and good weather.
Gabriel N — Google review
Was nice to see ancient architecture preserved! It's location is easy to find, can be viewed from the street and has parking opposite, which is also a nice place to park and take a stroll into central Varna. (3 Lev for 3 hours via the parking Varna app).
Rob M — Google review
In order to make this viable the organisers of the attraction need to put up walls around the outside. You can see the whole thing, through the fence in 30 seconds. It’s interesting but it’s not more than a two minute attraction.
Spencer H — Google review
Closed :( No display of working hours but I don't think one is needed as everything can be seen from the outside. No displays in Bulgarian or English

History Museums
The Varna Museum of Archaeology is a significant cultural institution located in the city of Varna, Bulgaria. It houses an impressive collection of ancient artifacts from the Varna area, including the renowned Gold of Varna discovered at the prehistoric archaeological site known as the Varna Necropolis. This treasure, dating back 7,000 years to the time of the Thracians, contains some of the oldest processed gold in the world.
Great place to visit and go through the history and how boarders were changing over years. It would been great to have a guide and there is a lot of information on boards that you can read. Kids were happy to learn the history through archeology
Nadiya A — Google review
I didn't have many expectations before my visit, but I must sincerely say that it is one of the best historical / archeological museums I have seen so far! Very well curated, a lot of objects on display, a lot of information (all of it in Bulgarian and translated into English). I stayed there 4 hours to really enjoy the whole permanent and temporary exhibition. Ticket price is 10 BGN. Cards accepted.
Alexander W — Google review
Great museum with lots to see inside! Our guide from the museum was excellent, she gave us a good idea of the history and customs of this beautiful country. Housed in this museum is a gold treasure from Varna Necropolis (4600-4200BC), as well as many other interesting artifacts, such as the remains of the original basilica in Varna.
Marcin S — Google review
What a magnificent place. Ten lev entry fee and a couple of hours later your brain is crammed full of the complete history of Varna and Bulgaria. Some really interesting little tales to tell and some excellent artifacts. I like all the gold! An absolute must visit!
Richard F — Google review
Verdict: museum with solid exhibit items, good narratives, well-thoughtout route and theme planning for exhibitions, up-to-date museography, complete Bulgarian-English labels and signs -- one of the few museums in Bulgaria that is able to do so. Highly recommend visiting! Details: two floors of exhibitions along very long wings in many rooms, so be prepared to walk. Ordered chronically, each room has complete English texts to introduce the origin and discovery story around the artifacts, and some particularly important or interesting artifacts have their own narratives, also in both Bulgarian and English. There are lots of archeology and historical background info to help you appreciate what you are seeing, and to grasp the long and layered history of Varna and its surrounding regions, and to get a sense of how this place has evolved over millennia. There's no map of the museum at the ticket desk or elsewhere, but the rooms are arranged and laid out clearly enough in chronical order, so just follow each room's entry and exit, then a route will emerge naturally to take you through Varna's history and every room in the museum. Some rooms may have a temporary, thematic exhibition mounted so the chronical route through rooms may be interrupted at some point (there was a temporary exhibition when we visited) but the route returns after the temporary exhibition rooms. Basically just keep walking to and from each room, and you won't miss anything. Facility is update in most rooms with minimal glare glass cases and in-case lighting. Temperature control is in-place as well, at least on the first floor. Protips: - most interesting or impressive stuff, such as craft gold pieces from 5th millennium BC, is on the first floor. - there's an inner courtyard you can hang out or chill at. - you can pay by card.
Alex S — Google review
The museum exhibits Europe’s oldest gold, found near Varna. Its inside yard is a lovely outdoor venue for festivals, such as this music event.
Ivo D — Google review
This museum is absolutely a “must see” in Varna! Yes, there are many things to see and do here, but the holdings of this museum are exceptional and it’s well worth the time to learn Varna’s history. The displays are so well done, and the artifacts themselves of high quality. You’ll start with pre-history and work through two floors to the Middle Ages. There are a number of collections: a coin collection that is world class, a stunning icon collection, and fabulous Greek, Thracian, and Roman artifacts. There’s also a very cool exhibit on underwater archaeology. You can do this museum quickly, but taking the time to read the info boards (Bulgarian and English) will provide an excellent overall history of Varna and Bulgaria. It’s a shame there were only a few of us there today! This museum is a real treasure! Just go!
Martha C — Google review
This museum has amazing artifacts. The first level that covers the prehistoric, Hellenistic, Roman periods is absolutely stunning. Good use of juxtaposition and storytelling. I loved the timeline with some of significant artifacts. Kudos to the team who worked on this section! What a shame I can't say the same for the second level. It feels like thre's no clear and engaging continuity to the history of the region of Varna other than some singular (the proto-bulgars) and with little-context-given exhibitions (the icon exhibition). What about the Ottoman period? There's very little if no attention given to the Renaissance and modern times. What about the Balcanic wars, WWI and WWII?

The Retro Museum, located in Varna, is a one-of-a-kind museum that displays a wide array of artifacts and items from the period spanning 1944 to 1989. This museum offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to delve into the lifestyle and culture of Bulgarians during the socialist era.
Loved it! It's like this huge park right next to the sea. I don't really understand how some were allowed to build houses/villas in the park, but they did. Nice views, some nice restaurants, great for running/cycling etc.
Razvan D — Google review
Amazing blast from the past. Besides thousands of antique items from the Soviet era, there is an impressive car collection. Each of the vehicles is perfectly restored and displayed. Very recommended
Dany K — Google review
Great experience, great old cars and old stuff. You can easily waste 1 or 2 hours there and enjoy them. Next to it is a wax museum containing Bulgarian and international celebrities.
Vito H — Google review
Don't be fooled by the car pictures into thinking that this is ONLY a car museum. There are so many household items like hygiene products, toys, musical instruments, televisions, cigarettes, desserts used and consumed by the people in those times. This museum is a travel to the past! I have to say that the price is a bit expensive.
Alper A — Google review
What a fascinating place. I wouldn't call it a museum necessarily, but the collection of cars and everyday items from the communist times in Europe (not much from Asia). If you're a fan of the history of ordinary things and people, this is the place. I probably could've spent hours here, but the air conditioning was not the best so it got a bit stuffy in there. They also play music from the era which is great for the atmosphere. The wax museum is meh, I personally would skip it. Not worth the extra money. There's also a great selection of magnets in the gift shop. I had a hard time choosing ones that I liked.
Kate — Google review
An amazing museum that takes you back in time. Growing up in the communist times sure brings back a lot of nostalgia and memories. The collection it's just amazing, all the pieces in very good condition and the atmosphere is great. Worth all the money and definitely it's a no miss attraction in Varna!
C. L — Google review
BGN 30 entry. Large collection of beautifully restored communist era cars, toys and some homewares. Sadly, the music was too loud, none of the car brand names were displayed in English (despite having car info in four languages), and many information displays were blank. There was also no history of, for example, the Soviet car industry and wether people living under communism could actually afford to own or run cars.
Mali T — Google review
Good museum, cool cars and a lot of household objects from the solviet era. Everything was clean and well taken care of, tha cars were fully restored and they had mirrors underneath so you could see the underside. The price was fair (30 leva) The giftstore was lacking a little but all in all very good museum👍👍

Gardens
Sea Garden in Varna is a well-known seaside park featuring beautifully landscaped gardens, promenades, and a science museum. Established in 1862, it was the first park in Varna and has since become the heart of the city, offering a vibrant space for locals and visitors to enjoy various activities. The garden boasts lush green alleys, cultural monuments, and a charming rosary by the sea.
I visited it on March 14 2025, and it went back the next morning. It is the most beautiful coastal park that I have ever visited. It is about 2-km long. I am so glad that Varna has kept the prime piece of land for public access.
Hong Z — Google review
Huge park along the seaside, great for walks, sports and any activities, beautiful nature! Could be nice to have more coffee shops.
Inna B — Google review
Worth a visit to take a nice long stroll along the many foot paths. The naval museum is a good visit to see military articles from a few decades ago. DO NOT park anywhere that is not allowed (not even for a few seconds to drop of a mommy and her sleeping baby), the traffic police is quick to pounce and do not take any excuses, then your day is spoiled trying to find a place to pay the ticket. Varna city have nice beach areas and harbour but the rest reflects very much the pre-1989 era.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the most beautiful places in Varna! 🌊🌳 Sea Garden is pure happiness — full of fresh air, peaceful walks, and stunning green nature everywhere. The paths are clean and wide, perfect for walking, jogging, or biking 🚴. The view of the sea from the park is magical and refreshing, especially during sunrise or sunset 🌅. Every time I visit, I feel recharged, relaxed, and grateful for such a wonderful fresh air. Highly recommended for families, couples, or anyone who wants to enjoy nature at its best. ❤️

JUL2025: service even better this year. We sat on the main terrace. Great food , best views. And really a 6 star service ! Congrats to the team JUL2024: my third visit there in as many years and this rather unique restaurant never ceases to impress. The pirate ship location may seem more appropriate for an entertainment park, but once inside, you will enjoy it as a unique location for a great restaurant. Fantastic views of Varna’s beach and bay as a bonus.

This restaurant has amazing food choices. You can try exotic appetizers like fried Calamari, have fish, or get some delicious deserts and you can sit inside of a detailed pirate ship or sit on the top, outside with great weather. Our waitress was wonderful and very helpful. You have a great view of the Black Sea coast. We loved this restaurant. It was pretty expensive, but worth it.

I usually hate to leave bad reviews but I couldn’t let this one slide. We came here to eat, and we had an unpleasant surprise. Waiters? We were waiting for them for many minutes. The food came and it was not done properly. The meat was raw. We tried to signal this but no waiters were around. We shared what others from the table had and we pointed this out to the waiter when the bill came. Unfortunately, the tried to “bribe” us with some liquor and some cakes. We declined. They charged us for the whole bill although the food was not edible!! Very high prices for the quality of the food.

Fantastic food, super unique and fun environment. A must visit in Varna.
Tadd S — Google review
Amazing food, great views, cozy interior and seaside view made better as the price is so reasonable. We ordered shared seafood platter for two and everything was cooked perfectly- octopus, mussels, prawns and calamari. The salad was amazing - wood cooked aubergine, Bulgarian cheese and rasty tomatoes drizzled with garlic and goodness. Excellent service. Good choice of drinks. There is nothing not to like. Highly recommend.

What a lovely place ! Located at the edge of the sea garden with plenty of free parking on the opposite side of the road. Awesome outdoor seating arrangements which I can imagine are suitable for some great outdoor events. Staff super friendly and helpful in English. Price / quality was outstanding. Probably the best boneless half chicken I have had in my life...!! And their home cooked potatoe fries are delicious. Their veal cheeks are unbelievable tender and tasty as well. It's a really good and skilled kitchen staff. We vere there three times...!! All good 👍

Food was great and the atmosphere was lovely! However the staff were very difficult to get their attention despite that the restaurant was very empty. The chairs were very heavy too so having some chairs replaced will be better. The food was lovely so really if the staff become more attentive would be better!

If you are looking for a local restaurant serving Bulgaria dishes or cousines, then this is the right place to go. Lamp and veal meat balls was excellent dish. I did taste the meat balls with the flagrant from charcoal. Very well barbequed from the surface while meat juice was nicely reserved. Sweet potato was also great. Thin and crunchy outside and moisture inside. Excellent! Lamp knuckle was tasty and tender. Homemade lemonade was also tasty. Especially, the mint in it that was refreshing.

Terrific food, good service, nice ambience. The place is located in a non-tourist part of town. Lots of locals which is a good sign. Porcini risotto was great, and with their meat dishes you can't go wrong. We've tried them in Sofia and it was very good too.

Best food in the city. Old school service much better than angry modern waiters wondering what they are doing. Strongly recommend ears. Atmosphere again old school, no cheap shiny plastic modern bulshit.

Finger licking traditional cuisine. We come here after various disappointment we had eating by the beach. This may not be in the most beautiful area, but the food is really delicious and the service great; -Taste - 10/10 the food is delicious. The only minus was the mustard sauce which was quite salty. No complaints about the rest; -Food quantity: 10/10 generous portions; - Location: a bit far from the sea, but in a quiet neighborhood. Cats are coming and greeting everyone; - Payment - cash or by card.; - Toilet - VERY VERY CLEAN ; -Service and Stuff: very polite and nice and smiling. Menu in English as well.

I went there twice. Didn’t like the eggplant mousakka the first time but loved the katak so decided to go again. The bean soup and the lyutenitsa are>>. I am a vegetarian and it was ready good to see a separate section of vegetarian meals on the menu. The biscuit cake with pudding was also really good. The food is fresh and the staff is polite. English menus are also available and the interiors are traditional and comforting.

Godzila Sevastopol is a restaurant chain with four locations in Varna, including one by the beach. The menu features Bulgarian dishes like the traditional Shopska salad and freshly baked flatbread, along with seafood, sushi, and grilled meats. Locals and visitors praise the restaurant for its good quality food, generous portions, and reasonable prices. Some customers note that while the food is delicious, the atmosphere at one location lacks the typical Godzila vibe.
The best food ever tried, I give them a 10 The price it's normally It go to be one of my favourites restaurant
Carlos M — Google review
I had been following and frequently passing by this restaurant for a long time, as it had always caught my attention. Yesterday, I visited it for the first time. First of all, the interior was excessively hot—uncomfortably so. It was almost unbearable to stay inside. I ordered 4 pieces of sushi, 2 appetizers, and a beer. However, the service was quite slow. To start with, chopsticks were not provided for the sushi. Out of the 4 pieces, 2 were incorrect. One was correct but looked nothing like the image in the menu, and the other was completely wrong. On top of that, one of the appetizers never arrived. The service was very poor overall. The waitstaff never checked on us or showed any interest. I will not be choosing this place again.
Uğur E — Google review
The food was pretty meh, it looks good on their menu but when they bring it. Looks wise it looks inedible. We ordered 2 salads and pasta. Both salads had normal to Luke warm vegetables and one of them was avocado salad. Where the avocado was rock solid and we had to throw it away. The service was alright. Better to get a reservation for Happy restaurant in the center and go there. Much better service and food there.

This was our first time at this location! The food was delicious although the lemonade was a little bit too sour! For real! Please add some sugar or honey! Also some people at our table thought that the pictures from the menu looked bigger and better than what we got in reality. Also as I remember Godzila from before, I think this location lacking real Godzila atmosphere! The lights are too bright, no decor, everything is super plain and looked like fast food chain rather than a Godzila pizza place! I will be back to try something else from the menu!

We could eat with my doggy daughter since they had an outside space😇 I had beetroot salad without cheese, grilled veges with wholewheat bread(seperate menu), and their traditional mountain tea, "Mursalski" 🇧🇬 It was like Taiwanese green tea and liked it very much✨ Grilled veges were very juicy and liked the sauce especially😋 My hubby chosed other salad with eggs and cheese / Chicken gravy with mush potatoes and he liked it too! Lastly we shared vegan raw cake 💖 Not decorative exterior so I put only 4stars for atmosphere but it's decent, clean space with a great foods with our baby🐶 so enough satisfied!

Excellent and affordable food in Varna. I loved the design of the place, very modern and taken care of. The staff were friendly and they spoke in English so that was a plus. We had cream chicken soup, chicken burgers and some quinoa balls and everything was very good looking and tasty. I would recommend coming here anytime. They could take care a bit more of the toilets as it wasn’t very busy so they could have cleaned them a bit more. Overall a good experience.

High quality ingredients, but the flavor is not always there. The service is very good, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Prices are very reasonable, and the menu consists of dozens of dishes. Overall I would recommend.

The menu with a large variety of dishes compromised on the food quality. In a group of 10 the food was cold by the time everyone was served after one hour. There was hair in 4 of the foods. Some of us enjoyed the food but I ate a better pizza at a local bakery on the same trip.

If you’re lucky enough to snag a table in the Lavender Room on the second floor, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the sea that enhance your dining experience.
My first visit at this restaurant. I have visited other BM restaurants. This one is situated in an old house with beautiful vintage style and design. The service is nice and fast. Everything we ordered was tasty. It has a front and rear garden both being very beautiful. It has a nice view and it’s well decorated. It is moderately expensive. It’s good for parties, banquets and business events. I recommend

This was an out of this world experience! In a small Mediterranean villa with matching interior, lemon trees and a sea view with aged roof tiles and cypress, you get to taste a real added touch on classic dishes. The salads and vegetarian options are exquisite, but you are here for the beef steaks. This is where the fun begins. The waiter brings you to choose the actual steak that you will consume and you pick how well you want it grilled. The meat comes from their own farm and is cured in the right conditions, visible in the fridges on the lower floor. Personal opinion, eat while is warm. Desserts are good and get extra points for presentation.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of the best steakhouses I’ve been to! The steak was perfectly cooked, juicy, and full of flavor. Great sides, excellent wine list, and top-notch service. Cozy yet upscale vibe — highly recommend!

Vert tasty food! Everyone was happy with their order. The bread with herbs is amazing and the homemade beef balls with potatoes is a great choice!

Fantastic place! The food is amazing with lots of variety and unique taste. Portions are also big and at reasonable prices. It’s away from the crowds of the seaside venues so you can really relax and enjoy your dinner with a great view. For me this is the best restaurant in Varna and we will definitely be coming back! There is quite a big parking which is free to use for guests of the venue.

Fren's birthday. Very tasty food. Wine was mediocre but I think we just ordered a cheap one. Prices are a little bit high but the food quality and the atmosphere makes up for it big time.

We went to BM Olea for a daily dinner and really liked the restaurant; one of the best in Varna in my opinion. The restaurant has a really nice atmosphere, parking, nice view, the dishes were cooked good and staff was very nice. The only con I could say is the menu, menu was weak, they may add a few more main dishes; especially for people who don't eat pork and don't want to have a heavy dinner with steak, something lighter. We went in October, though it was all good, I believe it will be much better experience in summer as the restaurant has a very beautiful garden and seaview. For two people, we paid around 60 BGN (30 EUR), which is on par with other restaurants in the area.

Well, it was the firs and the last time. With the arrival you find yourself at a horrible parking space, very steep and covered with gravel, all the cars parked terribly, no marking or anything to ease the exparience. We were about to leave bit we decided to give it a chance. Worst idea ever. They've seated us in a kind of a basement, very low, hot and stinky. At this point it was the second time we were aboit to give up bit decided it's too late to find another place, so we've stayed. From there on, the things got only worse. Terrible service- slow and confusing, 30 min wait for the wine, plates arriving in complete wrong order. Appetizers and main dishes before salads- absolutely shocking, felt like we are in a fast food place at the train station. The food itself: burned bread, salad with eggpalnt with almost no eggplant, spicy kalamari- not spicy at all, salty meat and a salad with prosciutto and strawberries which came last, after being mistaken with another salad. It came last with literally 2 slices of prosciutto and a single sliced strawberry, I don't have a photo because I was already too frustrated and angry. Disaster. The explanation was that the waiter is new and horrible but I don't think he also cooked in the kitchen. Never again.
