Nature is unbelievable. Matterhorn has around 430K of marked trails, everywhere you look is a beautiful nature. Valleys, glaciers, hills, fields, cows. Had an amazing hike and will be back hopefully sometime. Would love to Mountain bike here too, its just so beautiful and raw.
Nature is so beautiful, lots of marked trails for hikers and so clean. It is a stunning experience and such a lovely place, recommended for both hikers and those who are not. Train ride up there is around 40 minutes from Zermatt if you are planning to go all the way up, or a bit less if you are planning to hike a bit till the top station.
Phenomenal - very beautiful mountain surrounded by very beautiful landscapes and a great small cozy town, Zermatt🤩. I was there in July 2023 and it was amazing. We had lunch at the restaurant in Schwarzee which was also with a very good view of Matterhorn and the surroundings. I can truly recommend going here, for sure!
This is an awesome mountain. Really steep on the cable car (what do you expect people who have put too steep) and nice and cool from the warm temperatures below (as you'd expect being 4000m above sea level).
Iconic Switzerland at its best. The views of the Matterhorn are simply world-class. Whether hiking, skiing, or just relaxing, it’s magical.
Beautiful mountain scenery and cute sheeps. On Matterhorn, the sheep season was already over in October. But we were lucky to find sheeps on the hills west of Zermatt :)
Probably the icon you could think about Switzerland! Spent 3 days in Zermatt, found it not too difficult to have a look towards the peak as the distance and altitude is not that far away. Rifflesee (Gornergrat area) gives the best view with a mirroring lake surface. The 5 lakes hike in Sunnegga is also spectacular. Both hikes are easy and almost all downhill if you hop off the cable cars from higher stations.
In my experience it was way better than Jungfrau. My family loved it. You can take the tram to the second to last stop and start walking down along the track for a beautiful view of the lake, the top of the mountain, the valley.

Highest gondola in the Alps, rising to a 3,883-m. summit with 360° views of other peaks & glaciers.
Slide 1 of 8
This observation deck offers a direct view of the Breithorn and a spectacular 360-degree view of the Swiss Alps. We recommend taking the gondola from Zermatt, as it's easy to access while enjoying the spectacular view. Glacier Paradise is a cave beneath the glacier, but it's cold even in summer, so a down jacket is a must.
This is the pinnacle of Matterhorn visit for any tourist. The highest cable car station with temperatures hoovering around sub zeros. Here you have three basic options one to visit the panoramic 360 view tower through a lift, second you can walk on the glacier upto the hiking trail to Breithorn and third you can the glacier cave by foot with mesmerising snow sculptures, crevices of glaciers to view live, and a walk through the sub zero temperature. You can easily spend atleast half a day but last of the cable car being at 6 p.m.
I definitely recommend, there activities for the whole day! First go to the top, enjoy the view and snow, you can climb the mountain if you want, enjoy Ice Palace, then. Go slowly down, there is lots of trails , lakes, there is amazing restaurants with the breathtaking view. I started 8.30 and came back to hotel 6pm... It worth every penny!
Overall, this is a great ride up close to the mountain. There’s a bunch of activities to do once you reach Klein Matterhorn. The cable car ride itself is worth the price because of how high it takes you and the views you get. However, if I compare this to Jungfraujoch I felt like our experience was much better in Jungfrau. If you’re in Zermatt though, this is what I’d recommend going for vs Gornergrat.
Wow...we were not sure when we arrived on Sunday evening as it was raining and we could not see anything. We decided to do the glacier paradise which was the best decision. Going up, we ran into heavy clouds and snow, we could barely see 4 m in front of us. The cable car was awesome. There is an ice castle with ice art, amazing stuff. Take extremely warm clothing, it gets below 5 degrees there. There is a good coffee and food shop, with other stuff like gifts, etc. There was snow so we got to play in the snow. The view point was closed unfortunately due to the heavy winds and the matterhorn was not visible. Overall, I'll do it again. And, ALWAYS GET A FULL OR HALF PASS DEPENDING ON HOW LONG YOU PLAN TO STAY. Half pass for short stays, full pass for longer stays.
Climbing the glacier at 3004 meters above sea level was an unforgettable experience. An elevator can also be taken down to a cave with ice images, part of which is located in Italy. The platform is with the elevator up and in good weather you can see an unforgettable view of the Matterhorn.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise was absolutely amazing. Easy gondola ride up from town, and the views at the top are insane. You’re surrounded by glaciers and massive peaks, and you can even spot mountaineers and skiers out on the snowfields. We hiked the Matterhorn Glacier Trail partway down, and the scenery was nonstop. Alpine lakes, rocky terrain, and the Matterhorn in the background the whole way. Easily one of the highlights of our trip to Zermatt.
Absolutely mind-blowing experience. I cannot recommend this enough, especially if you choose a day with perfect weather. The views are stunning from top to bottom. The Glacier paradise doesn't disappoint, the statues are amazing!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I just had the most incredible week skiing with Matterhorn Diamonds in Zermatt, Switzerland, and I can't recommend them highly enough! From our very first interaction while organising our trip from Perth, the entire team was outstanding. They made planning effortless for our group of nine, even going above and beyond to arrange snowboard instructors for two members of our party. Having one dedicated contact made the process so smooth—special thanks to Rowena for her exceptional support! A huge shoutout to our fantastic instructors who made our experience unforgettable: Chris the pseudo diamond, patient Jack, amazing Ana, good friend Sebastian, and the greatest of all time, Juan! These guys are the 💣! Clearly love what they do and are eager to share that with others. Together, they created precious memories for all of us with loads of fun and laughter. If you're looking for ski instruction, whether you're a beginner or advanced skier, look no further—Matterhorn Diamonds is the place to go. You will not be disappointed! Thank you, team, for an amazing experience!
Juan showed me an absolutely amazing time on the slopes. I was able to really be myself in Zermatt around him, he was honestly the best thing about my trip. Speaking to him about the love for skiing and his excitement has influenced me. I’m no longer afraid to go and try on my own. I can’t wait until next year, I feel so confident because of this! I really can’t believe how fast he taught me. I was turning and skiing within the hour! I was able to send a video to my dad and family back home, as well as friends and colleagues. You will definitely have priority for ski lessons should anyone book. This has changed my entire world in winter sports and I will now be an annual skier. I really can’t say enough good things about this experience!
Lucas made our experience unforgettable. His knowledge of the mountain, his understanding of our needs, and his tips for improving my son’s skiing technique were on point. He was a fantastic guide and instructor. He also gave great advise about restaurants for lunch and dinner.
Would recommend Matterhorn Diamonds Ski School for anyone skiing Zermatt. I toured with Ana and she was outstanding! The resort is so vast that it can be overwhelming. Given the conditions the day we skied, Ana located the best possible runs while navigating areas on the Italian side of the resort then back to Switzerland. We had a full day of great skiing. When I return to Zermatt I will ski again with Matterhorn Diamonds! Thanks Ana!!
My experience with Isabella and the Matterhorn Diamonds Ski School team was nothing short of extraordinary! From the moment I stepped onto the slopes, her expertise and passion for skiing were evident. Isabella's patient and personalized instruction elevated my skills to new heights, allowing me to tackle challenging terrain with confidence. I wholeheartedly recommend Isabella and her team to anyone looking to improve their skiing abilities while having an unforgettable experience on the slopes. Thank you, Isabella, for an incredible journey on the mountain! ⛷️🏔️
We booked a private lesson for 2 with Matterhorn Diamonds 2 weeks ago and it was the best decision ever. We were fortunate to have Lukáš as our instructor, which completely changed the way I see and enjoy skiing. He was patient and always looking for our moves and posture, giving advices and building the confidence and proper mindset to approach any slope. We started with less steep blue slopes and gradually increased the difficulty ending up doing red slopes and having one of our best times on ski. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who feels the need to take a few classes and learn how to approach slopes, improve their posture and gain confidence. Thank you Lukáš and Matterhorn Diamonds for the best ski experience and for making me love this sport!
Our experience with Juan and Rowena was exceptional! Last year, my 10-year-old daughter had an amazing time skiing with Juan, thanks to the quick arrangement made by Rowena, even on short notice. This year, we returned to Zermatt, and once again, Juan and Rowena provided us with another fantastic ski experience. Juan's week-long sessions with my daughter were not only enjoyable but also incredibly effective in improving her skills significantly. He managed to strike the perfect balance between keeping the sessions fun and challenging, resulting in my daughter developing a deeper love for the sport. Rowena, on the other hand, was incredibly patient and supportive as I navigated my way through the slopes as a beginner. Despite the unpredictable weather conditions, she ensured that our skiing experience remained engaging and fulfilling. With their guidance, we were able to explore various terrains and witnessed significant improvements in our skiing abilities. I wholeheartedly recommend both Juan and Rowena to anyone seeking top-notch ski instruction. We are already looking forward to returning soon for more unforgettable skiing adventures!
Matterhorn Diamonds were great to work with from start to finish! Some friends and I rented skis, boots, helmets, jackets and pants through their team and they coordinated a guide/instructor for our first day on the mountain. They accommodated all of my requests via email and were very prompt and friendly. I was so grateful for the wonderful ski day their team provided. Juan was our guide/instructor and he was absolutely splendid to spend the day skiing with. I have been skiing my whole life and consider myself an advanced/expert skier from Utah and he was able to provide helpful instruction on ways I could improve as the terrain here is different from my usual. The other skier in our party is more novice to skiing and she was very much improved and more confident at the end of the day with his expert instruction. Juan had such a detailed way of explaining ski movement making his instruction easy to implement on the slopes. He was knowledgeable about the mountain and it’s history/culture and accommodated everything we wanted to accomplish. He was truly wonderful and we so enjoyed our experience with him and the rest of the diamond team.

Matterhorn museum is a very good museum to learn about history and development of Matterhorn and Zermatt village. The entire journey of how a village of farmers got transformed into a major tourist attraction is exciting. You also learn about the mountaineers who lost their lives while climbing Matterhorn, the challenges faced by them, the lifestyle and history of Zermatt village and much more. The entire museum is underground and there are free lockers available to keep your luggage. As the museum opens in afternoon you can come here after your Gornergrat Matterhorn visit. It is close to  Zermatt station just a 10 minute walk. Matterhorn museum is free with Swiss Travel Pass. Tip: The museum focuses more on history of Matterhorn and Zermatt. If you don't like history you might find this place boring.
Matterhorn Museum After exploring the Matterhorn Views itself, with your Swiss Travel Pass you can visit this museum. It has a wide range of history about the city of Zermatt and how it became a touristic city in this age. There’s also a free locker that you can put your bags in before you explore inside the museum. A lot of artifacts from the present and the past. I also like how the animals are involved in building the whole city knowing their contribution.
Excellent tribute to the mountaineers of the past who pioneered alpine climbing in this area long ago. A balanced version of telling the controversial events of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. The audio tour is a must, you will get so much more out of your visit. The museum is only open briefly each day (14:00-18:00) so plan accordingly.
It was much more interesting and informational than I expected it to be. You can see real size houses and models, a small movie theater in the middle of it all. If you have the time, it is definitely something interesting to see.
This is one of the most unique museums we've ever visited, and we absolutely loved it. It offers a fascinating insight into the history of Zermatt, the daring hiking expeditions to the Matterhorn, and the equipment used by climbers over the years. One of the highlights is a dedicated room showcasing an engaging documentary, which adds depth to the experience. It's a must-visit for museum enthusiasts, and a perfect way to spend time, especially on a rainy day!
Nice place to learn about the local history, especially the historic competitive climbs to conquer the Matterhorn peaks and how local tourism developments accompanied. There's an upper exhibit floor and a lower floor with about 5 rooms and a small theater screening a short film. Here you can experience how the locals lived in the past. Overall informative site to spend about 1-2 hours, great for children and adults alike.
I really enjoyed the Matterhorn museum! It's great if you are looking for a quick activity in Zermatt (especially on a rainy day). I enjoyed learning about the early exhibitions and appreciated the detail of the displays!
Loved reading the rich collection of mountaineering histories and seeing how a poverty stuck Alpine town transformed into a world class tourist attraction. The museum also documented the first ascent of Matterhorn very well.

A beautifully maintained cemetery that remembers and respects many of the brave mountaineers that lost their lives to surrounding mountains including the Matterhorn.
This is a small cemetery between St. Mauritius Church and the river. It's called Mountaineers in honor to those who lost their lives conquering the famous peak. However, we also found other buried here, as well at the Church's backyard
Very interesting cemetery with buried fallen hikers of the mighty Matterhorn. Just walking through and reading the epitaphs and dates of birth and death is fascinating. Across the street is a dedication on a wall with sculptures that you have to see to believe!
A really moving place that leaves you wondering if these climbers had their time again knowing their original lives’ outcome would they chose to live their second lives in a more risk-averse type way perhaps…?
A very sobering and even sad place to remember those who Chose to Climb the Matterhorn and lost their young lives. Many were in their teens and early twenties when they met their end, before their lives had truly begun. The graves of the original group that was led by Edward Whymper are here as well. They summited successfully in 1865 but met disaster on the way down. The cemetery is located behind St. Mauritius Catholic Church and is open 24/7. It is well maintained and a very interesting place to visit.
A very clean Graveyard with heartwarming Grave Decoration. It is a very nice Memory of all the People who died on the Mountain. R.I.P ❤️ Gone, but not forgotten.
A local cemetery, with a corner dedicated to mountaineers who lost their lives climbing the Matterhorn, the mountain which overlooks the town of Zermatt. Take a quiet walk here to commemorate their lives. Well-maintained and much-visited by the community.
Pioneers of alpinism are laid to rest here. Among these some members of the first successful climb to the summit of the Matterhorn, four out of seven died during the decent.

Amazing hike from Camping Aareg, but quite some climb .. approx 5600ft. We were lucky to have a cloud inversion, but wow what an amazing hike with amazing views. We were lucky to come across around 15 iBex too.
Beatiful viewpoint in Zermatt. It is one of the mountains which are easily accessible from the city center. You would need to take Sunegga express to Blauherd and from Blauherd to Rothorn cable cars. The whole trip costs 35CHF with halbtax/swiss pass. Do not forget to take a picture about the Grand tour of Switzerland photo spot!
We were hiking to the Unterrothorn (from Zermatt). It took us about 6h (with breaks). The Stellisee on the way up was one highlight. You can take the cable car down to Zermatt.
Easy to reach with 3 different trains and cable cars. Great view. We started our hike here down.
Best view on to the Matgerhorn. Better then Cornergrat because of the pyramidic shape of the Matterhorn.
A beautiful mountain and place to visit
(Translated by Google) During our walk we took the Gondola to reach the summit of Rothorn. When we arrived the restaurant was closed, unfortunately. The view was magnificent. All around the building, the view of the Matterhorn and all these mountains over 4000 meters was truly stunning. You really have to discover this place. (Original) Lors de notre promenade nous avons pris la Télécabine pour accéder au sommet du Rothorn. Quand nous sommes arrivés le restaurant était fermé, malheureusement. “If you’re really ’sporty’ Julika said (from wonderful Hotel Daniela) then this gorge is really fun with a guide.” Icy, snowy… spectacular. Took us 4+ hours and then we had to walk into town. Bring warm tea, chocolate and a snack. Oh, and hand warmers!!!! Hot chocolate at Batten is your payoff. Note- “sporty” in Switzerland is next level. Not for people with fear of heights either!
Nice hike upwards with nice views and greenery if you visit in summer .
A wonderful canyon to visit with children. It is quite short so the walk through takes about 10 minutes. However, on the way to Zermatt through the forest, there is a beautiful path with many small playgrounds and activities for kids.
Absolutely stunning natural scenery! The gorge is breathtaking with its turquoise water and rock formations. The only downside is that it’s quite short. Even if you take your time, you’ll be through in about 20–30 minutes. At the far end you can choose an alternative path back to Zermatt, which makes the trip more enjoyable
It took us about two hours to walk from town down to the gorge up and around and down the other side of the gorge. It was steep in a lot of spots. There are a lot of hills and steps and rocks to climb up. It was pretty. It cost 5.50 a person. There’s a building where you pay.
These gorges are reachable both from Zermatt (easy way) or by descending from Riffelalp or Findelbach stations of Gornergrat Express (downhill walk). We were impressed by mixed tumultuous Gornera stream water and lush vegetation hanging on the stonewall around. Very safe and reasonable large wooden and steel walkways.
Wow, amazing place, water coming down with 200km speed, the sound of this powerful water it just incredible.
Awesome view everyone should come. It’s a different vibe of Zermatt.

We used European Snowsport extensively for our Zermatt vacation. We hired an instructor for a private lesson and guide on our first day which went great. Our adult skiing improved and we learned how to get around the mountain right away which helped the rest of the trip go a lot more smoothly. We had our three year old in kids academy and her instructor was a perfect match for the job. High energy and good at keeping 3 year old emotions in check (to the extent that's possible). We had our six year old in kids academy and also had his instructor Matilda give him a few afternoon private lessons. I couldn't be happier with how it went. Our son improved by leaps and bounds over the course of the week and Matilda knew exactly how to teach him new skills and give him the confidence to practice them. By the end of the week they were ski buddies and my son went from a beginner slope only skier to skiing every red/blue run on the mountain and even trying out some moguls and litte side trails as well. If you have a child in a similar circumstance, I would see if you can request her specifically. But really, all 3 instructors we had were great. 5 stars.
I highly recommend European Snowsports!!! Our family hired Adam as our guide and we skied from Zermatt to Cervinia, Italy two days in a row. Adam is personable, fun, and a level three ski instructor. When we hired him we were seeking a guide, which, I recommend to make use of your time, not get lost in the Alps, and find the most amazing slop side restaurants. Yet, Adam also taught to each of our ski levels throughout the day. My husband is a level thee ski instructor and found Adam to be highly skilled. Thank you Adam!! We will hire you again when we return!! Love & Joy 🌸🎿🌸 Deborah
Our instructor was called Petter and we hired him for 3 sessions. He was absolutely brilliant; patient, friendly and skilled. He taught us how to diagnose what we were doing wrong and how to correct it. He also gave us techniques to deal with speed and control as well as taking us on lovely runs which we could enjoy and which were appropriate to our skill level. A great experience which gave us all confidence.
Julius Mohren was our guide at Zermatt. It was a 10 out of 10 day! He took a group of 8 of us from the US all over the mountain. He pointed out all the best places to eat and a bit of inside info on the apres ski scene in Zermatt. He was an outstanding guide who was friendly and kept all of us together. An awesome day. I highly recommend him as a guide!
Our ski guide, Jiří , was incredible. Not only was he very knowledgeable about the mountain and the ski terrain, he gave tips on the town and restaurants. Jiří was a guide who took us to many areas always with safety and fun as top priority. He was an excellent skier and gave great tips! He was also kind, funny and very engaging! We look forward to skiing with him again! Ali & Shane 🇨🇦
Our experience from beginning to end with European Snowsport Zermatt has been beyond outstanding. From my initial enquiry, Laura's response was incredibly quick and informative and was able to answer all of the questions I had regarding supporting my young family on the slopes. We booked lessons for my 3 year old son and under the positive nurturing and encouraging tutoring of Charlotte his first experiences on the mountain I'm sure will set him up well for future sking. For my 9 year old daughter and husband who were both first time skiers, we were matched with the incredible Adam who not only managed build confidence and skills with our daughter but was able to support my husband from Wolli park all the way to sking red and black runs by our 4th day. Adam is nothing short of an incredible instructor and undoubtedly one of the best in Zermatt. He is incredibly patient, able to keep to the tempo of the lesson positive but also challenging and was full endless tips to improve both my husband and my sking in the time we were in Zermatt. He innately understands the sking terrain, ever changing conditions on the mountain and what best suited our sking level as our time with him progressed. We will definitely be requesting his instruction again and highly recommended European Snowsport, Adam and Charlie.
We had 2.5 days lesson with instructor Adam, for 4 children ages 11, 7, 7 and 5 years. Adam was a wonderfully patient, helpful and welcoming instructor who was highly capable at instructing our children at different skill and confidence levels. ES were very helpful when coordinating the booking and assisting with our queries. The kids loved the ski school experience and the skiing confidence and skills they gained put them in great sted for the rest of the week. Thank you so much Adam and ES.
Charles is, by far, the best instructor. He managed to teach my family how to ski in just two days, even though it was our first time skiing. He was very patient and found personalized ways to help each of us improve on what we were lacking. On top of that, he always maintained a great attitude and proved to be a genuinely kind person with a great sense of humor!

We went to Zermatt for our first Ski trip as a family (much to some peoples amazement as they perceived it not to be for beginners). However, we chose Summit Ski School and it was the best thing we could have done! We had 3 afternoons with Paul Hammett, followed by a further afternoon with Mike Scrivener and both were fantastic instructors, who essentially took us from complete beginners to to skiing the blue runs confidently. The booking was easy with great communication and the tution was amazing! My wife struggles with balance due to dyspraxia and sight loss in one eye, but Paul had her out of the beginner park and on the slopes by day 2! We can't recommend the team enough and would definitely book again when back in Zermatt!
My daughter & husband took a refresher class for 2 days with Louise. My husband was not happy bc he skied when he was younger & knows how (lived in Denver). Louise was phenomenal. Both of them raved about her. She was patient & an extremely gracious teacher focused on the technical aspect of teaching. My daughter really wanted to parallel ski & she met her goal. She even suggested where to eat & made reservations. My husband who like I said didn’t want lessons raved about her. It was a great decision
I had the best lesson ever with Sam this week! He was so patient, kind, and thoughtful in his instruction. I’ve taken many ski lessons before but I’ve never had a breakthrough with my turning like I had with Sam! He really helped me build confidence to go down steeper slopes. The beginner areas he took me to were so fun and easy to learn in!
We booked a ski guide to help us navigate beautiful zermatt. We were lucky enough to get Paul H. He was an absolute wealth of knowledge and guided us all over the mountain on our first day. We learned so much about the culture, mountains, lifts and even the local cuisine. I especially appreciated his patience and kindness with my mediocre skiing abilities. He made sure the group was taken care of and then personally skied a few rounds with me and pointed out ways to help me improve. I fell going down an easy hill and when I caught back up and told him He smiled because he had clearly seen it and said something like “You were just checking the snow right?” Right! He never made me feel inadequate or like a burden and I was so grateful. It was a great experience and I will never forget his teaching me to “pet the dog”! Thanks Paul for all you do! You really made a big difference in my experience in Zermatt!
I had an outstanding experience with Summit for a private snowboarding lesson. The guide that they provided was superb. He had pleasant personality, knew the mountain and was an expert rider. In one day he was able to show me most of the mountain and teach me some new skills. I highly recommend the school to anyone interested in learning how to ski or snowboard.
Awesome skiing experience! I went in January and it was my first time skiing ever and I not only picked a stunning location but a great ski school as well. Luca and all of the staff was so helpful and kind. They were able to find time on the same day for the afternoon when I inquired in the morning. Prices were reasonable and everything seemed very organized and efficient.
My wife and I would like to say thank you for giving us a wonderful skiing experience. We have a good three days of learning with our ski instructor, Christine. She has patience, and is very encouraging to us as beginner skiers. We got from not knowing how to ski to clearing the basic slope on day 3 thanks to Christine's guidance. Highly recommended!
We hired Summit to orient our group of 7 very experienced skiers on our first trip to Zermatt. What we got was one of the best days of skiing we’ve ever had (7100 M vertical!). We were very lucky to have had Chris, a 20+ year Zermatt instructor/guide. Our day was an amazing mix of tons of great terrain, history, geography, photography, and helpful ski tips for each of us. His detailed tips for tackling Cervinia (lifts, trails, and restaurants) was an added bonus. A big thank you to Summit and Chris for the greatest day! The scenery didn’t hurt either.

Old larch-wooden households dating back to 16-18 centuries that are still residences. We discovered this quiet street by chance and immediately got fascinated. Must visit while in Zermatt!
Hinterdorfstrasse is a small, maybe 200-300 met long side street between the main Bahnhofstrasse and river. It's one of the oldest streets with old wooden houses leveled up on stone stilts, probably to avoid uninvited animals or floods. Some houses are converted into guestrooms and bars, some we saw abandoned. It's was pleasant and interesting stroll after the train to Matterhorn
The must-see historic corner in Zermatt. Shows how the weight of the small wooden houses is carried by 4+ flat stone plates, which in turn stand on a wooden structure that elevates the house above ground level. No tickets are needed here.
An interesting street full of distinctive old wooden buildings in Zermatt built in traditional style. Some are occupied, some are available as rental apartments. Surprisingly, none were open to look inside. I think one of these should be converted back to how it was back in the day as it would make a nice little museum & visitor attraction.
Beautiful! I loved this street. A small street with chalets dates back to 1600. Some houses are renovated and are in use as holiday homes, but the outer view of the house is still in its original state.
Small street with houses dating back to 1600. Some have been renovated and are used as rental flats.
When in Zermatt, be sure not to miss out on this little street. Even though it's just one left turn away from the "Bahnhofstrasse" and right smack in the middle of the village, you might easily miss it, since the first few meters do not look like you might picture it. But then after a few steps the old wooden buildings will pop up. They are dated back to the 16th Century....making them around 500 years old. Mostly they are made from larch wood, containing lots of resin, which makes them very strong and also keeps away parasites. Many of the buildings are still inhabited and used. So be respectful to the buildings and its owners and keep the noise level low. Between some buildings you even can catch a great view of the Matterhorn (on your right when walking down). Of course there are always visitors present, but if you're just a bit patient and wait a few minutes you can get some pics without anybody on it. Most visitors rush through this place. But if possible, take your time to fully appreciate this part of Zermatt.
A quiet street featuring old houses of Zermatt, where you can walk past and admire the wooden buildings. Mostly is just looking at the exterior, but it's good enough. No entry fee but just a historical street.

The church was a pretty new building, in comparison to other churches in Europe region. It has amazing architecture for such a small village, but if you read in history, it was first mention in the 1200.
Nice Church in Zermat. Recently built it looks like.
St. Mauritius is the main Parish Church in downtown Zermatt. It's around 100 years old. We found the Church exterior more appealing than interiors, specially with great Matterhorn views. At the Church backside is a small cemetery with buried mountaineers who died during Matterhorn conquest. Interiors are pretty modest with the Noah's Ark painting on the ceiling. We were lucky being there when a local school class had their lecture by the altar which was a very memorable experience
The first historical record of the parish church of St Mauritius dates from 1285. It can be assumed that back then it was a small and modest place of worship. Over the following centuries, the church was enlarged and renovated several times. The predecessor of the current parish church was probably built in 1587 in the so-called Italian style. Originally the parish church had three Gothic altars. Following the custom at the time, these were replaced by baroque altars in the 18th century. On the south side of the church were the cemetery and the charnel house from 1651. The new church from 1913 Initially the people of Zermatt did not want a new church at all. But a local vote on 13 November 1910 paved the way for an ambitious new scheme. The architect Adolf Gaudy from Rorschach drew up plans, and on 6 June 1916, Monsignor Joseph Mariétan, Bishop of Bethlehem and Abbot of St. Maurice, consecrated the new church. Ever since, the parish has celebrated the anniversary of the inauguration of the church on the first Sunday in May. The church was painted in 1920, and the clock installed in the tower in 1925. Inauguration of the big organ in 1926 and three new bells in 1932 marked the end of construction. Today’s church stands further east than its predecessors. Complete renovation in 1980 To celebrate the 700th anniversary of the parish in 1980, the parish priest, Eduard Imhof, undertook a complete renovation of the church. Changes to the interior included removing confessionals and double benches from the aisles, taking away the pulpit, adding a celebration altar, replacing the Stations of the Cross and converting the baptismal chapel into a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The ceilings of the choir and vaulted nave were also painted. The painting on the ceiling in the centre of the nave, “Noah’s ark”, is by the artist Paolo Parente from Florence and also dates from 1980. Valuable artefacts The church of St Mauritius is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of Regional Significance because of its altars and baptismal font.
Beautiful catholic church in Zermatt, been there for pray and love this place much.
📍 Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius @Zermatt 🇨🇭 ⛪ Parish Church in the Heart of Zermatt Located right in the center of Zermatt’s old town, the Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius (Parish Church of St. Mauritius) is a peaceful and spiritually rich stop during any walk through the village. With its striking green steeple and backdrop of alpine peaks, it’s a beautiful architectural landmark that feels both modest and majestic. Inside, the church is calm and inviting, with traditional stained glass, carved wood details, and a serene atmosphere ideal for reflection. During our visit, we also noted a unique Noah’s Ark sculpture near the entrance—adding a delightful and meaningful artistic touch.

Quite good easy mountain to do as climatising or as practice. Start early to avoid the crowds. The first parts are over a ski slope so watch out for ski people. If you reach the top, go to the ridge for nice views and spectacular slopes. These routes are PD Crampons and ropes are recommended.
This is my first 4000! Not too difficult to climb from Cervinia but glacier equipment required, watch skiers in first part of road and take also mountain guide with you. Beautiful views to Swiss and Italian side - good weather required :)
As for many others here: that was my first 4k mountaineering)) Safe & quite easy climb: around 1,5h way to the top from Klein Matterhorn cable car station. Good place to start your alpine journey: to discover glacier climbing, harness & crampon usage etc Perfect for both beginners and to acclimatise before more difficult climbings Guide + Crampons, ice axe and other equipment still a must! Today there were several crevasses: you shouldn’t underestimate this either
Most beautiful mountain ever, and very easy to climb!
Easy and very safe to climb and can enjoy amazing and unforgettable views from the top. If you don't have experience with using crampons, need to go with a guide.
Excellent start for Alpinism to acclimatise and for beginners. Never underestimate it still stays a mountain.
Beautiful view to the highest mountains uf Europe including Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and many more. Anyone can easily get there with good equipment and a good guide.
Breathtaking views, around 2 hours of hike from Klein Matternhorn. High mountain equipment required!

If nature cooperates the view are incredible, I wait 2 1/2 hours to get the shots I wanted. Picture don't find you, you find them. The hike is a little difficult if you are older and the air is thin.
Beautiful mountains, especially on the train ride. We were promised sheep, but not given any neither on the trails. The trails are very rocky. The little shop near the train station has in fresh croissants and extremely overpriced items.
I was impressed by the spectacular view of the Alps and glaciers from Gornergrad Lookout. The view of the Matterhorn and the surrounding 4,000-meter peaks is particularly indescribable and is a view that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. I think the best way to enjoy the Alps is to take the cog railway to get there and then trek part of the way back.
Clear sky and amazing views , from Zermatt to Gornergrat with train and then a nice walk down. The perfect weather, thank you Switzerland .
The glaciers were heavenly here. The #16 loop hike was short & steep, could be too much for the faint of heart. The #15b hike to Riffelsee was magnificent facing Matterhorn, yet at times steep and sandy. I almost fell a few times. I’d recommend it only on a sunny day and for those with good physical fitness & hiking experience.
We were there in the evening, on one of the last trains, there were almost no people. And the weather was clear, so we were lucky. Of course, it is magically beautiful up there. The best view of the Matterhorn! If it hadn't been so late, we would have definitely walked down one stop.
12 september 2022 , a journey carved into memory. The ascent by train from Zermatt carried us gently into a world of white peaks and endless horizons, each turn unveiling the silent majesty of the Alps. From the top, we started our descent on foot, covering nearly 2000 meters of elevation difference. Walking down with the majestic Matterhorn always in sight, standing like a silent guardian above us, was truly inspiring. A perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and the unique charm of the Swiss Alps.
Very beautiful views of the Gorner Glacier as well as Matterhorn and the other peaks (make sure you check the weather in advance before booking your tickets so you can ensure good views). I recommend coming in the morning since usual around lunch time you have more people and more clouds. We went with the train and then hiked our way down to Riffelalp and it was totally worth it (if you want to make short hike- go down to Riffelsee lake which is excellent spot for a quick lunch and nice photos of Matterhorn)

Lake

Classic alpine lake in picturesque surrounds known for its clear waters reflecting the Matterhorn.
Slide 1 of 8
It's not a very difficult walk. There are some stairs, but I think most people could manage. The view is very beautiful, the reflection is very clear, and it's not very crowded.
The iconic mirroring of Matterhorn. Very accessible from Rotenboden station, took around 10 mins to the lakeside. Lack some luck for the weather, but the sky cleared up a bit after 1 hour of waiting, so hope for the best and be prepared to wait a bit. Found a marmot on the right side of the lake as well!
Lake Riffelsee is famous for its inverted Matterhorn. It's about a 30-minute trek from Gornergrad, and it's a pleasant trekking course with a direct view of the Matterhorn. If you're lucky, you might even see some cute marmots.
Start your trip early — around 7 AM to catch the calm morning light. Go down to Riffelsee first, then head up to Gornergrat later in the morning. The view is absolutely stunning! You’ll see Matterhorn in multiple shades as the sunlight changes.
Hands down best part of our trip to Zermatt, possibly even throughout the rest of our travels in Switzerland. We went early, missing our 7am Gornergrat train due to a delay in Tasch, but with an 8am departure from Zermatt it was still peaceful/ quiet and had no issues with crowds blocking views/photos.
I hiked down from Gornergrat to Riffelsee - the descent is a little steep in places, but nothing that a good pair of hiking shoes can't handle, even for inexperienced hikers. The earlier in the day you get here, the better in regards to crowds, clouds and weather. The lake itself isn't anything special, but in ideal conditions, the lake will give you a wonderful reflection of the mountain in its waters.
Riffelsee (from Rotenboden, one station before Gornergrat) This time, we were lucky to see a perfect reflection of the Matterhorn in the lake—absolutely magical. We took a short but incredibly beautiful walk from Rotenboden station (one stop before Gornergrat) to Riffelsee, and continued toward Riffelberg station. At a certain point, we decided to turn back, simply because we wanted to experience Riffelsee once more. At the entrance to the lake, there’s a lovely alpine botanical section with high-altitude flowers—small but charming. Throughout the walk, we were constantly surrounded by stunning and diverse vistas: the ever-present Matterhorn, nearby glaciers, and distant mountain slopes with a slightly arid appearance. What a view!
Woke up early, hiked to catch the perfect reflection… Managed to capture one shot before an inconsiderate dude decided to fly his drone (noisy too) right above the water 😤💦 Ripples everywhere. Funny how it takes hours for nature to find stillness — and just seconds for a drone or dude to mess it up 😓

Easily the best gondola in Switzerland. With the Swiss Travel Pass you get a 50% discount to Glacier Palace (~$60 francs). The views get increasingly more amazing as you continue to hit incredible views. There are multiple stops along the way that you can get off of but went directly to the top. The cable cars fit about 4-6 people each. You do have to transfer once (if my memory serves me properly) to shorter gondola to glacier palace. The glacier palace gondola is an extra large car (enough seating for ~20) with HEATED seats. I would suggest sitting in the front of the car but in the center section to face the peak. **If there are clouds, it's honestly a gamble whether or not you will see the Matterhorn. Go up with the hope of seeing it, but don't have the expectation to. Luckily I was able to catch a glimpse of the peak on the cable car ride but an hour at the glacier palace, it was completely engulfed by the clouds.
Zermatt is a small town but packs a punch. If not cloudy the Matterhorn can be seen from all directions. You can get the sky lift but this costs £125 each but it does offer wonderful views of the glacier and the big mountains. Its also the highest viewing in the Alps. Down in.the.town. Great hiking trails and restaurants
Zermatt as such is a beautiful town and yes it has great views on the Matterhorn. Going up Furi and taking the "Culture walk" down is also very nice. But.... The town is also overcrowded, throughout the whole wall through heights and valley you het the noise of helicopters, the cable car.... Not the sound of silence Switzerland normally offers.
Authentic car-free village located high in the Swiss mountains, makes you doubt if it is real or make-believe, well decorated and nice looking. World famous ski resort in winter and plenty of hike trails in summer- there are always things to do here Amazing view of Matterhorn makes the stay here an incredible experience. The prices are high even for Switzerland, especially considering that you need to get there by train even if you are travelling by car (and pay a fortune for parking))), however it totally worth it!
What a spectacular town at the base of the Matterhorn mountain. Visible from Matterhorn are the Swiss, Italian, and French Alps. The town has luxurious hotels, high-end retail shops, eg, Rolex. Resturants are various, casual, and relaxing. The Swiss chocolate shops are a must try for sweet tooth's. Always look around for sight of the Matterhorn. Note no cars allowed in townand only way to get to town is train or bus. They have electric carts in town.
This is where you go to access the Matterhorn and other hiking stops. The views are impressive but I believe more impressive In all snow. It is 1 hour to the top and expect around 250 francs for the trip up. The tickets include local bus fare and the ice museum. It is prettier than many other hikes and the geographical prominence really makes the Matterhorn stand out. Also even though there is several stops to the top just follow the signs for the Matterhorn.
Gondolas past Furi, up to Klein Matterhorn were closed due to wind/weather conditions. I was only able to go up to Furi. Hours of operations were difficult to find online, so I am including pictures of their posted hours here.
From here one can take the ride up to the real hiking paths, numerous of optiosn, so plan well in advance. However, dont forget to walk around and find small details around the town as well, embrace them and enjoy the Swiss experience.
