The castle ruin gardens are free. Toson was one the major authors of the Meiji period renowned for social realism; ‘The Broken Commandment’ depicts the life of a young man born into the despised burakumin class. Keizo Koyama’s Japanese western style paintings recapture the beauty of Komoro and the surrounding alps. Bridges, stone gardens and all that Japanese traditional gardens encapsulate can be found in this peaceful, uncrowded castle ruin park. Come November, the autumnal reds will bring the park ablaze, just as spring with transform the park with the cherry blossoms. Opposite the park’s entrance a long line of people wait patiently for a seat in Kusabue (Whistling Grass) Soba restaurant . Be sure to write your name in the book before lining up!!! We lined up for maybe 30 minutes and we’re not disappointed; Toson soba included tempura, apples, walnuts, wakame(seaweed) and nagaimo(mountain potato). The station is filled with home grown produce and an honesty box. We feasted on fresh apples on our train trip home. Four apples for 200 yen. Komoro is well connected by rail and well off the usual tourist track.
Nice park to visit while in Komoro. The zoo is getting a renovation and the new penguin enclosure looks pretty nice and decent. The entrance fee to the park is affordable at 500 yen for a combined ticket to visit some of the museums which houses art and various artifacts from Komoro's history. Worth a visit for those who want a quiet place without much tourist and an insight into some of the town's history and sights.
We stopped here before closing time. All the amenities were closed or closing for the day. Fortunately, I was able to get the Castle stamp and gojoin. The grounds are a good walk around, but we had 30mins to explore as it was closing. Friendly staff and cool trails!
Lovely place, famous for its cherry blossoms. We visited during the summer, and there were only a few people around. Much of the grounds have been transformed into a park, with only a few remaining gates and walls. From the observatory, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Chikuma River and the surrounding valley. Definitely worth a visit.
Great place with amazing culture and beautiful views, great spots to snack and relax as well. Only ¥300 entrance or ¥500 if you want to enjoy the museums as well. The only down side was the zoo, very small cages and the animals all looked distressed.
A nice place to visit to see sakura in the day time and at night (lights will be lit till 10pm, check their schedule online). There is a tunnel that leads you from the train station to the castle ruins. Very easy to get there.
Calm tranquil place. Must be amazing if sakura is in full bloom. Very easy access. From tokyo take the shinkanzen to sakudaira. Change train to Komoro. Exit the komoro station, where you will find a nice little coffee shop on your left.. walk further up and go down a small tunnel that lead straight to the main door
(visits 1) (total castles visited as of posting, over 35). The 3 stars is for the castle park as a whole. The castle grounds and park are huge and nice. But the entrance fee includes (and obviously goes to support) a tiny zoo which is part of the park. I hate these tiny zoos. The cages are old, WAY too small, and dirty. If I had the choice I would never support these zoos.

Built into a steep cliff, this centuries-old Tendai sect temple offers sweeping views of Mt. Asama.

One of the famous hiking spots in Nagano prefecture. It takes 20~30 mins from the car park to top of the mountain. Not a normal staircase, some steps are difficult, better take care. Lot of rocks and small water flows are everywhere. Some ancient temple buildings are there at the top of the mountain. Great view. No real rush, car park is bit small. Parking and entrance free.
We visited Shakusonji Temple by car. The road was very narrow so we parked near the top of the mountain and walked about 25 minutes to reach the temple. If you are an experienced driver it might not be a problem but we preferred to be safe. The trek is worth every step. The temple itself is fascinating, and walking gave us a quiet and peaceful start before arriving. All in all, a memorable visit that I’d happily do again.
Definitely worth the ten minutes hike up the hill at the back of the car park. I had the place all to myself in the early moning.
Must see in the area! Its a 10 to 15 walk with stairs from the bottom carpark. There is also a carpark located above the temple of you don't feel like walking but i recommend the walk its lush and beautiful with a cascade.
A very special temple and really wonder how it built in the past in this cliff
As amazing as the pictures. If you have a small 4 wheel drive car you can drive right down to the temple but the walk is worth the time to enjoy the beautiful forest.
Very serene place, highly recommend to walk in the forest up to the shrine and then go to the onsen
It takes about 20 minutes to climb the mountain trail, but the Kannon-do on the precipitous cliff is worth a visit.

Very good japanese winery. High end wine
(Translated by Google) 2025/4/5 Kikkoman is the parent company of Mann's Wine. Soy sauce fermentation technology is also used in wine. The surrounding vineyard is also quite large and I feel like it can be called Chateauman's Wine. Here we are dealing with the high-end SOLARIS series. What is particularly noteworthy is the paid tasting, which is a great deal as you can sample the top three types of SOLARIS series (11,000 yen per bottle) for around 2000 yen. Naturally, the top range is good. It's hard to buy wine for 11,000 yen, so it's really nice to be able to sample it. The tasting is held on the second floor, which has a wonderful view. The scenery is as good as Chateau Mercian Yugo Winery. I went there in April, so there weren't any grapes in the vineyard, but I think by the end of summer, the whole vineyard will be full of grapes, so I think you'll get an even more spectacular view. Please check the photos for the wines you purchased. Another winery that I want to visit again has increased.
(Translated by Google) Very beautiful facility. You can purchase and sample wines. There are also other wonderful things such as a Japanese garden with raw grapes and a field where you can see various types of grapes up close. Parking is also free. I bought a sparkling wine called Longan, which was reasonably priced at 2,200 yen. I chilled it well at home and drank it, and it was really delicious❣️ Some wines are available at supermarkets, but please try the wines that you can only buy here🍷💕💕 (Original)

There is a beautifully maintained garden called Bansuien on the premises. I would love to live in such a spacious place. There is nothing nearby, so you can relax and enjoy your time. You can sample the wines on sale at the shop, for an additional fee. I didn't sample any of the wines this time, but instead purchased a sparkling wine. It was reasonably priced at 2,200 yen. I bought a dry wine, which wasn't too acidic, and was easy to drink and delicious. I've become a fan of this sparkling wine. If I have the chance, I would like to visit the Katsunuma winery as well.

Great ski hill for beginner to intermediate level. Quality snow. Road driving up is a little whindey.
Pretty small ski resort with short pistes. 40 mins from highway exit and often requiring snow tyres. The advantage of this place is its high altitude at 2000m giving you good snow condition on the pistes. There is a restaurant and minimum shop as like all other ski resort. Not crowded at all on the day I went.
First ski station I visit in Japan. Not too many different slopes but quite fun. Good for beginners
Very limited runs - but not crowded and is a great place for beginners and intermediate skiers to work on technique. Season starts early here due to the height and face of the mountain; but also means it gets very icy in Spring.
Cute little resort. Great snow the day i went but the runs aren’t that interesting. Friendly staff and nice rest areas.

Didn’t get to eat, just walked through the area and looked at the cactus on sale… (the prices, wow) Such pretty flowers and landscaping, and loved how they have the names of the plants next to them. Must have a meal here on my next visit! (There is a one-star review on here about a zoo… that is probably not this shop… Can’t seem to send the irrelevant report)
Very fresh and flavourful food. Great ambience for a hot afternoon. There is also a shop inside selling very affordable local produce.
Good vegetable curry for lunch, the shop is nice, beautiful view on the garden
English menu available. The staff was very friendly and happy to host westerners. They didn't speak English and we didn't speak Japanese, but using Google translate and their English menu ordering was a breeze. They are attached to a small curio store with gardening items and baked goods (think cookies and bread). We had a fantastic Margherita pizza and a small black coffee.
This zoo is utterly repugnant. The animals are kept in tiny, cramped, dirty cages and look sick and depressed. We didn't mean to visit, but it was included with the park ticket, and had to leave half way through I was so upset. Those poor animals, this zoo should be shut down. If you have any regard for animal rights you will not visit this zoo.
Refreshing but filling meal.

(Translated by Google) I knew the name of artist Keizo Koyama and his work ``Beni Sengen,'' but this was the first time I had seen a work other than ``Beni Sengen,'' and I was overwhelmed by its power. It has been the artist's dream since he was young to donate his works and a museum to his hometown. The artist was born in Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture. I envy the citizens of Komoro ☺️ I don't have any photos because you can't take pictures inside the building. Please come and see the work 🤗 That's right, I definitely want to see the Beni Sengen mural at New Takanawa Prince Hotel❗❗ (Original)

I had never heard of the painter Keizo Koyama until I came here, but as soon as I saw the painting at the museum, I thought, ``This is Impressionism.'' However, I felt that the artist's works were not mere imitations of French Impressionism, but, as the pamphlet states, they were ``paintings of Japanese landscapes in a bold style with a high level of spirituality.'' Even so, I was a bit surprised to find that the floor of the exhibition room was not flat, but slanted. Is this due to terrain constraints? No, I think I did it on purpose. In addition to the museum, we also saw a relocated atelier. What caught my eye was the bar counter. Judging from its size, it seems like it's for one person, but I've started making a bar counter for one person! Did the painter drink alcohol here with his wife as the bartender (sometimes the other way around?)? That's very cool!

(Translated by Google) The former Hokkoku Kaido road diverges from the old Nakasendo road at Oiwake/Wakurei, enters Komoro City, passes through Yora-cho and Aramachi, and turns at a right angle in front of the gate of Kogaku-ji Temple. ``Bridges'' and ``slopes'', which are no problem in modern road construction, should be avoided as much as possible in the Edo period. Komoro has many steep slopes and deep valleys created by rivers, so it seems that this kind of road was appropriate due to the topography. "Jodo Sect, Tenkizan, Dentsuin, Kogakuji" ``Denzuin'' refers to ``Onokata, the mother of Tokugawa Ieyasu,'' who received the Buddhist name. It seems that it was promoted when the lord of Komoro Castle was the Matsudaira clan. Komoro Castle and its lord also have an interesting history, dating back to the Heian period. It is said that it began when ``Minamoto no Yoshinaka = Kiso Yoshinaka'' built a mansion on top of a terrace. As a key point in the eastern part of Shinano Kunisaki, it was the focus of the warlords of Takeda, Uesugi, Hojo, Tokugawa, and Sanada during the Sengoku period. Eventually, ``Toyotomi'' took over the country, and ``Tokugawa'', who had been chased by the Kanto region, expanded its influence into Komoro. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the victorious Sengoku Hidehisa under the Tokugawa Shogunate completed construction of the castle and became the first lord of the castle. After that, Komoro Castle, which continued to be owned by the Matsudaira clan and the Makino clan, was abandoned in the Meiji era. As it has received generous protection as the ``family temple of the Tokugawa family,'' it is natural that the ``trefoil hollyhock'' can be seen on the temple crest. As you walk around the grounds, you can see the Nenbutsu monument. In the Jodo sect, it is said that anyone who chants ``Namu Amida Butsu = Nembutsu'' can go to the Pure Land of Paradise. Is there a two-dimensional barcode next to the offering box in the main hall? Is it a measure against infectious diseases? Temples are progressing these days. ``Matsui Inari Daimyojin'' was also enshrined in the precincts. ``Mr. Matsui'' is named as a staff member of ``Mr. Matsudaira,'' so this may be a connection. (Many Matsui surnames and Makino surnames are found in Komoro City.) Photographing cemetery tombstones was prohibited. This is to ensure that personal information does not lead to slander. Please come by when you are walking around Komoro.

It is a temple that is loved by local people, with elementary school students walking through it in the morning on their way to school. There are several huge trees within the temple grounds, creating a beautiful scenery even though it is a temple in the middle of the city. (Translated by Google) I visited Maeno on the last day of renovation. While thinking about Komoro-juku in the Edo period, I was also a merchant in the city before my grandfather's generation, so I felt the love for Komoro from the local people, and it warmed my heart. Also, I would like to visit from Tokyo when it reopens as a restaurant.
