Historic Sites
Komoro-jō Castle Ruins - Kaikoen Park is a historic site in Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture, featuring the remains of an Edo-era castle. Despite the absence of the original structure, visitors can learn about its strategic construction and history. Situated at the lowest point in the city, it's known as Japan's only 'castle in a hole.' The park also houses various attractions such as a zoo, amusement park, museum, and children's play area.
Kaikoen(castle ruins), Komoro, Nagano, Japan. The Yatsugatake High Country rail which passes the highest station in the whole of Japan: Nobeyama is a restful way to see the spectacular countryside of the Japan alps on the way to the the castle ruin park Kaikoen of Komoro in Nagano Japan. 400 yen includes tickets to the Memorial Hall of Toson, the Koyama Keizo Museum of Art, and the Chokokan weapons museum. The castle ruin gardens are free. Toson was one the major authors of the Meiji period renowned for social realism; ‘The Broken Commandment’ depicts the life of a young man born into the despised burakumin class. Keizo Koyama’s Japanese western style paintings recapture the beauty of Komoro and the surrounding alps. Bridges, stone gardens and all that Japanese traditional gardens encapsulate can be found in this peaceful, uncrowded castle ruin park. Come November, the autumnal reds will bring the park ablaze, just as spring with transform the park with the cherry blossoms. Opposite the park’s entrance a long line of people wait patiently for a seat in Kusabue (Whistling Grass) Soba restaurant . Be sure to write your name in the book before lining up!!! We lined up for maybe 30 minutes and we’re not disappointed; Toson soba included tempura, apples, walnuts, wakame(seaweed) and nagaimo(mountain potato). The station is filled with home grown produce and an honesty box. We feasted on fresh apples on our train trip home. Four apples for 200 yen. Komoro is well connected by rail and well off the usual tourist track.

Nice park to visit while in Komoro. The zoo is getting a renovation and the new penguin enclosure looks pretty nice and decent. The entrance fee to the park is affordable at 500 yen for a combined ticket to visit some of the museums which houses art and various artifacts from Komoro's history. Worth a visit for those who want a quiet place without much tourist and an insight into some of the town's history and sights.
Jeremy E — Google review
We stopped here before closing time. All the amenities were closed or closing for the day. Fortunately, I was able to get the Castle stamp and gojoin. The grounds are a good walk around, but we had 30mins to explore as it was closing. Friendly staff and cool trails!
Roger A — Google review
Lovely place, famous for its cherry blossoms. We visited during the summer, and there were only a few people around. Much of the grounds have been transformed into a park, with only a few remaining gates and walls. From the observatory, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Chikuma River and the surrounding valley. Definitely worth a visit.
Maria — Google review
Great place with amazing culture and beautiful views, great spots to snack and relax as well. Only ¥300 entrance or ¥500 if you want to enjoy the museums as well. The only down side was the zoo, very small cages and the animals all looked distressed.
Niel B — Google review
A nice place to visit to see sakura in the day time and at night (lights will be lit till 10pm, check their schedule online). There is a tunnel that leads you from the train station to the castle ruins. Very easy to get there.
Lung K — Google review
Calm tranquil place. Must be amazing if sakura is in full bloom. Very easy access. From tokyo take the shinkanzen to sakudaira. Change train to Komoro. Exit the komoro station, where you will find a nice little coffee shop on your left.. walk further up and go down a small tunnel that lead straight to the main door
Aria — Google review
(visits 1) (total castles visited as of posting, over 35). The 3 stars is for the castle park as a whole. The castle grounds and park are huge and nice. But the entrance fee includes (and obviously goes to support) a tiny zoo which is part of the park. I hate these tiny zoos. The cages are old, WAY too small, and dirty. If I had the choice I would never support these zoos.

Zoo
Komoroshi Zoo is a small animal park that showcases a variety of unusual creatures alongside some familiar domesticated ones. The zoo's collection includes exotic animals, such as species not typically found in the region. Alongside these, visitors can also find more familiar animals like dogs, ponies and guinea pigs. Despite its modest size, Komoroshi Zoo offers an enjoyable experience for those looking to observe fascinating wildlife and interact with friendly domesticated animals all in one place.
A nice place to come with a child, at daytime you can even see how the animals are fed or hold some smaller ones, i.e. guinea pigs or mice. The cages are small but the living conditions of animals seem to be proper ones.
Natalia O — Google review
About 20 different species including penguins. Most cages house one animal and are small compared to their size- Lonely and claustrophobic. There’s a few decent ones but I guess the low price for the zoo entry doesn’t do much to help the animals’ conditions.
Joshua T — Google review
The cages are too small for the animals… some of them look anxious/sad. In the pictures you can see how they are. It’s a pitty because I imagine the intention it’s not bad but please make sure they have more space…
Madeline M — Google review
Small zoo, small exhibits best was the petting zoo part where we could put panda mice and guinea pigs. I am BIG guinea pig fan, so it's totally worth it. Daughter loved it cos could pet animals. 😄
Siew D — Google review
Tiny enclosures for such beautiful animals that deserve better. Please do the right thing and move these animals to a better life. They look bored and distressed.
Roz A — Google review
The worst zoo I’ve seen in my life. We were depressed after going. The animals are alone, in extremely small cages, without any nature. They really seem bored to death. There is even a dog in cage, as well as a horse - pure nonsense. Don’t support these kind of cheap zoos that don’t care about animals.
Célia H — Google review
Disturbing place. Many animals have tiny compartments with almost no place to hide and no enrichment. Wish I could release the fox and tanuki from their cages with a concrete floor and bench-and-blanket in the corner. They looked very stressed in such prison sells.
Polina R — Google review
It was heartbreaking to see the animals in such small enclosures. The manic cries of the animals were spine chilling. I hope they close this zoo and release the animals soon.

Perched on a steep cliff, Shakuson-ji Temple, also known as Nunobuki Kannon, is an ancient Tendai sect Buddhist temple that offers breathtaking panoramic vistas of Mt. Asama. This centuries-old temple boasts a Kannon-do structure which can be reached by ascending a mountain trail in approximately 20 minutes. The temple's location and its architectural beauty make it a must-see attraction for visitors seeking tranquility and spiritual enlightenment.
One of the famous hiking spots in Nagano prefecture. It takes 20~30 mins from the car park to top of the mountain. Not a normal staircase, some steps are difficult, better take care. Lot of rocks and small water flows are everywhere. Some ancient temple buildings are there at the top of the mountain. Great view. No real rush, car park is bit small. Parking and entrance free.
Chaminda M — Google review
We visited Shakusonji Temple by car. The road was very narrow so we parked near the top of the mountain and walked about 25 minutes to reach the temple. If you are an experienced driver it might not be a problem but we preferred to be safe. The trek is worth every step. The temple itself is fascinating, and walking gave us a quiet and peaceful start before arriving. All in all, a memorable visit that I’d happily do again.
Ehtiram N — Google review
Definitely worth the ten minutes hike up the hill at the back of the car park. I had the place all to myself in the early moning.
Un V — Google review
Must see in the area! Its a 10 to 15 walk with stairs from the bottom carpark. There is also a carpark located above the temple of you don't feel like walking but i recommend the walk its lush and beautiful with a cascade.
Arthur B — Google review
A very special temple and really wonder how it built in the past in this cliff
Anthony N — Google review
As amazing as the pictures. If you have a small 4 wheel drive car you can drive right down to the temple but the walk is worth the time to enjoy the beautiful forest.
J P — Google review
Very serene place, highly recommend to walk in the forest up to the shrine and then go to the onsen
Samuel Z — Google review
It takes about 20 minutes to climb the mountain trail, but the Kannon-do on the precipitous cliff is worth a visit.

Soba noodle shop
Kusabue Honten is a charming spot known for its delicious wild vegetable soba, also called sansai-soba, and sweet sake known as amazake. The restaurant offers a fully vegetarian meal with the soba served alongside a fish cake called kamaboko. Visitors have praised the warm and delightful flavors of the dishes. In response to current health concerns, Kusabue Honten has implemented safety measures such as plastic partitions and humidifiers.
One of the best soba noodles in Japan! The people in the resturant are super sweet and customised a vegetarian version. Super impressed that in a remote place like this you find such excellent people preparing excellent food! The love was even more after we said Indojin des! Love the food and love the people 🙏
Karthik R — Google review
Not bad! Wasn’t the best soba I had eaten, but they have hearty portions! the restaurant has a homely feel. Also, the tempura zaru soba comes with a tempura apple slice which was really good 🤯 not sure if they have an English menu. Order from the friendly staff and pay at the end. Cash only or Paypay:)
Sharmain S — Google review
Very delicious! A complimentary green tea on arrival. The soba noodles a large sized portion and delicious! I highly recommend not leaving without trying the warm sticky sweet rica ball, Ohagi (walnut crumble one was amazing!). Thank you for the kind service.
Bianca Y — Google review
I had wild vegetables soba (sansai-soba) and sweet sake (amazake). The soba came with a fish cake (kamaboko) but other than that it's fully vegetarian meal and it will make you full. Warm and delicious. The place has plastic partitions and humidifiers for covid prevention.
Hiroko ( — Google review
Kusabue is famous Soba noodles restaurant. Cold Soba noodles, bit sweetie and brothy sauce are fantastic. Soba noodles are priced JPY800. I felt the price is rather high. Car parking lot is available but too small against the size of the restaurant. Credit card payments are unacceptable. PayPay is accepted.
Shige S — Google review
Soba is excellent! Tempura is very good. It's a bit pricy ¥1500 but quality food.
Wilson T — Google review
Great soba and an absolutely amazing experience, we’ve encountered so many lovely people in the area but the staff here were the best by far. Top notch hospitality!
Niel B — Google review
Great tasting, hearty portions of quality soba at excellent prices. They also mix things up a bit with a few variations so be sure to grab 1-2 side items. Most travelers in Nagano will probably get sick of soba by the second time but this one is worth a visit. They also have some sort of walnut powder coated rice ball that they are famous for - it sounds a bit weird but it was pretty darn good.

Yakiniku restaurant

(Translated by Google) I didn't do it on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. I felt like they were doing it when I passed by 1/2. Please contact us by phone. Google shows me as a holiday. Is it related to the year-end and New Year holidays? Was it something special? So direction. It said it was a family restaurant. A local family restaurant? If you think that I didn't know you could also make Yakiniku! I didn't want to smell it when I took a bath. order regular menu 800 million yakiniku set meal (beef), 800 million special katsudon (tarekatsu), stone-grilled bibimbap, kimchi, egg soup, yukkejang soup, etc. It was so delicious, I’m glad I passed by before✨ I think he's been on TV as well. I'm happy that the cost performance is good and the business hours are long. Ordering was via a touch screen, and water was self-serve. I want to come again.

(Translated by Google) I got hungry on my way from Karuizawa to Ueda, so I did some research and stopped in. This is a delicious restaurant with excellent value for money. The B set of katsudon + udon and the kalbi yakiniku lunch came to 2,000 yen. The udon in the set was topped with pork that had a sweet and spicy flavor similar to shogayaki, and it was so filling that it didn't seem like a side dish. This restaurant is a rare combination of a yakiniku restaurant and a set meal restaurant, and from its slightly dated exterior to the unexpected tablet-based ordering system, everything about it stood out in its own unique way. It's like an oasis for local blue-collar workers and big eaters. Thank you very much.

(Translated by Google) P.S.: It was delicious last time and I was able to visit again before the day had passed. The daily lunch special was grated cutlet, but this time it was not good. Last time's oil and chicken was more delicious. The stone-grilled bibimbap was delicious❗️If I were to pass by again, I would definitely want to stop by because of the variety of menu items and the taste of the food. This is my second visit, and the customer service at the hall is very good. Thank you for the treat. I remember seeing it on 📺, so I discovered the shop while driving on Route 18 and suddenly stopped by for lunch. Arrived at 1pm and was seated with no waiting time. Water and towels were provided by ourselves. Since it's my first time, I ordered mini ramen for today's lunch B, but is it mini? I was imagining something a little smaller 🍜, so my stomach was full. Today's most important lunch⇒It was oil and chicken, but the outside was crispy and the seasoning was good🍚The cost performance is great with free refills❗ 🍜The volume was unnecessary. In this modern age, wouldn't it be okay to set the price at 600 to 700 yen? That's what I'm thinking. The yukkejang 🍜 was also spicy and made me sweat 🥵, but despite its spiciness, the yukkejang 🍜 was rich and delicious. Also, in terms of customer service, all the women in the hall were very efficient and the customer service was good, and the atmosphere of the store was very nice. I didn't think there were many shops like this. Despite the current times, I hope that the restaurant will continue to be open for many years to come, and it was a lunch that makes me want to stop by again if I pass by. Thank you for the delicious lunch😊 (Original)

The museum showcases relics such as documents and armor from the history of the Sanada clan, spanning from the Sengoku period to the Edo period. While it may be small, the museum's exhibits including armor, folding screens, and palanquins provide an insightful glimpse into the clan's heritage.

(Translated by Google) I visited on a weekday in August. There were a lot of history buffs. There were a lot of people there. Everyone was carefully examining the detailed explanatory documents. I'm a bit of a history buff myself, but even though I was the last one to enter, I was the first to leave. There's a sign that says "No photography beyond this point." It's small, so be careful. However, the history buffs there today didn't seem to be thinking about taking photos. (I was about the only one with photography in mind.) I empathized with Sanada and tried my best to look around the museum, remembering the historical drama "Sanada Maru." I think it will stick in my mind if I come back again sometime in the future. As I left the Sanada History Museum and headed back toward Ueda, the Ueda Basin was spectacular. It was once again clear that Sanada-go was located high up the mountain slope. (Translated by Google) I stopped by to learn about the roots of the Sanada clan before sieging the main castle of the Sanada clan. From the outside, it looks like a one-story Japanese house, but when I entered, I found myself saying "Huh?" to myself as I entered the exhibition room at the far right. There is only one exhibition room, but the layout is as good as any famous museum. I had underestimated it, thinking it would be like a mini version of the Sanada Treasure Museum in Matsushiro. My apologies m(_ _;)m (Original) 大変失礼致しましたm(_ _;)m

(Translated by Google) The parking lot is free and spacious. Admission is 250 yen. The exhibition space is small and photography is not permitted. There are exhibits of items and documents related to the three generations of the Sanada clan. The only problem was the difference between using "Nobushige" and "Yukimura." The names are mixed up depending on the source, which can be very confusing. Someone later added some fiction and made it "Yukimura," and it took on a life of its own, but as a history museum, I would like them to use the correct name. The Sanada clan main castle ruins, also known as Sanadayama Castle, Matsuo Shinjo, and Jurenji Castle, are situated on the mountainside northeast of downtown Ueda. Accessible via a narrow and steep road from prefectural road No. 4, the site offers parking facilities and clean toilets nearby. This historical site holds significance as the birthplace of the Sanada clan, who defected to Sanada from the Isono clan.
Good scenery! Amazing view point of Ueda city

The marker at the very top is a Pokemon Go gym which gets more foot traffic than I expected, because my dude got punted after less than two hours. Views of the surrounding plains are pretty rad.

(Translated by Google) This is Sanada clan Honjo. Wonderful remains remain. The defensive divisions such as the main enclosure, second enclosure, third enclosure, and Horikiri can still be clearly identified. Below you, you can look down on Sanada's Sato, and even the cars and people passing by can be clearly recognized. I see, if you set up a castle here, you will be able to see the condition of your territory at your fingertips!!I am very impressed. Looking at the ground (excuse me) from this castle, I feel as if I were Masayuki Sanada, and from today onwards I too can pretend to be Masayuki Sanada!! If you're a Sengoku fanatic or a castle fanatic, I think you'll be so impressed that you'll cringe. Please note that you must pass through a narrow uphill slope to reach the main castle. There are multiple routes. I visited on a road bike (bicycle), and the slope was quite steep. The restrooms have been newly built in recent years and are very clean. That's it for Manager Otter's bicycle trip.

(Translated by Google) Sanada Honjo Castle is also known as Matsuo Castle. It stands at an altitude of 890m, about 150m above sea level. However, a road has been built and free parking is available nearby, making it easy to visit. It is located in the center of the Sanada Basin, which is surrounded by Toishi Castle, Tenpaku Castle, and Matsuo Old Castle, and is close to the Sanada clan's castle. It is called Sanada Honjo Castle because of its location and background, but it is unclear whether it actually functioned as the Sanada clan's main castle. The castle ruins are simply laid out in a continuous style with three enclosures along a plateau-like ridge. Moats are cut between the enclosures, and the tip of the third enclosure has been cut into a slope. Only a small amount of stonework can be seen. It is not large enough to be called a main castle in terms of both scale and breadth. However, there is a large space further south of the three enclosures. Its location is unclear. There is a sign indicating the remains of the moat, but it is now almost completely filled in. The area appears to have been artificially leveled, so it's possible that there may have once been a residence or building here. If so, it would have been of a certain size and likely functioned as the main castle. There is evidence that Sanada Honjo Castle was in use since the Kamakura period. If so, it is likely that it was built by a force other than the Sanada clan. According to legend, it was built by Sanada Yukitsuna (Masayuki's father). In 1541, it was attacked by the allied forces of Takeda Shingen and Murakami Yoshikiyo, and Sanada-go was taken from it. It subsequently became Murakami Yoshikiyo's territory, but was successfully recaptured in 1551 under the command of Takeda Shingen. It was subsequently developed, along with the surrounding subsidiary castles, as the Sanada clan's base.

(Translated by Google) It was Sanada Yukitaka who built this mountain castle, which offers a panoramic view of Ogata County in Shinano. He was the beginning of the Sanada clan of samurai. When it comes to Sanada castles, the impregnable Ueda Castle, built by Masayuki and which repelled the Tokugawa army twice, is famous nationwide, but Masayuki and his sons Nobuyuki and Nobushige (Yukimura) were also born and raised here. In the historical drama Sanadamaru, Masayuki often refers to himself as a country samurai, but this is not self-deprecating or a complex, but rather a sign of his pride in having served Takeda Shingen together with his father and uncles, going to war and defending their territory. That is why Masayuki could not let the Sanada bloodline die out. Even now, this area is still very rural (sorry to the residents of Sanada Town), but it would be fair to say that it was primitive at the time. When I saw a sign that read "Beware of bears" I got scared, thinking about the number of bear attacks in the news these days, so I played the opening song from Sanada Maru at maximum volume on my smartphone as I walked to the main castle at the top. (Translated by Google) I've been to the winery in Katsunuma several times, but this was my first time. This is Mann's Wine's Komoro Winery. It's completely different from Katsunuma. Katsunuma mainly sells Koshu, but Komoro sells Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and even Riesling. Mainly European varieties. It seems that different varieties grow in different climates. I went to both wineries, and I can feel that they each take great pride in their wines. I participated in a winery tour. You can take a tour inside the precious warehouse, and at the end, you can sample four varieties of Komoro Winery's proud ``Solaris'' series. I bought Zenkoji brewed with Longan at a shop. Next time, I would like to come around autumn to see the longan fruit. The surrounding vineyard is also quite large and I feel like it can be called Chateauman's Wine. Here we are dealing with the high-end SOLARIS series. What is particularly noteworthy is the paid tasting, which is a great deal as you can sample the top three types of SOLARIS series (11,000 yen per bottle) for around 2000 yen. Naturally, the top range is good. It's hard to buy wine for 11,000 yen, so it's really nice to be able to sample it. The tasting is held on the second floor, which has a wonderful view. The scenery is as good as Chateau Mercian Yugo Winery. I went there in April, so there weren't any grapes in the vineyard, but I think by the end of summer, the whole vineyard will be full of grapes, so I think you'll get an even more spectacular view. Please check the photos for the wines you purchased. Another winery that I want to visit again has increased. There is a beautifully maintained garden called Bansuien on the premises. I would love to live in such a spacious place. There is nothing nearby, so you can relax and enjoy your time. You can sample the wines on sale at the shop, for an additional fee. I didn't sample any of the wines this time, but instead purchased a sparkling wine. It was reasonably priced at 2,200 yen. I bought a dry wine, which wasn't too acidic, and was easy to drink and delicious. I've become a fan of this sparkling wine. If I have the chance, I would like to visit the Katsunuma winery as well. ASAMA 2000 Park is a small ski area in Japan that offers easy and gentle slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers to improve their skiing techniques. It has limited runs, which means it is not crowded, making it an ideal spot for those who prefer a more intimate skiing experience. The resort boasts a restaurant, shop, and changing rooms to cater to the needs of visitors.
Great ski hill for beginner to intermediate level. Quality snow. Road driving up is a little whindey.

Pretty small ski resort with short pistes. 40 mins from highway exit and often requiring snow tyres. The advantage of this place is its high altitude at 2000m giving you good snow condition on the pistes. There is a restaurant and minimum shop as like all other ski resort. Not crowded at all on the day I went.

Very limited runs - but not crowded and is a great place for beginners and intermediate skiers to work on technique. Season starts early here due to the height and face of the mountain; but also means it gets very icy in Spring.

I am grateful that Gusto Komoro offers a variety of fried chicken options, which is a popular choice among customers. It is convenient to visit any Gusto branch in the entire Kanto region. Lately, the quality of their rice has improved and become more delicious. One of the highlights of dining at Gusto is the availability of tasty set meals across all their stores. The hamburgers are now juicier and more flavorful than before, while their desserts also receive positive reviews.
