I visited on a morning walk. It's a small but atmospheric hall with an impressive ceiling painting.
Jizodo is located in the center of Kurokawa Onsen and enshrines Jizo, known for the story of the origin of Kurokawa Onsen, "Substitute Jizo."
Jizodo was built in the early Showa period and is a place to donate bathing tickets used for hot spring tours.
"Kurokawa's Substitute Jizo"
More than 300 years ago, a 15-year-old boy named Mutsugoro, who lived in Oguni-gun at the foot of the Aso outer rim, went out to town every day to sell salt in place of his sickly father. However, the business was not going well and his father's illness was getting worse, and the boy's mood was becoming more and more depressed.
"Is there no God or Buddha in this world?"
Finally, he had no money left, and could not buy rice or medicine for his father. Meanwhile, his father was on his deathbed. He called Mutsugoro to his bedside and asked him in a husky voice.
"Have you eaten a ripe yellow melon?"
Mutsugoro, a dutiful son, wanted to grant his father's wish, but he did not have the money to buy a single melon. If he hesitated, his father would not be able to fulfill his wish and would go to the underworld.
He waited until the dark of night and hid in someone else's field, but unfortunately he was found by Tokizo, who was on patrol, and told the official. Mutsugoro was beheaded by the official.
After the official who had beheaded him left, Tokizo looked at Mutsugoro's body and found that his head was not there. Instead, he found the head of a Jizo statue lying there.
After hearing the story of Jizo from Tokizo, Mutsugoro thought. "Jizo took my place so that Dad could eat the melon."
Thinking like that, he felt sorry for Jizo and decided to put his head back in place.
However, no matter how hard he tried to hold Jizo's neck, it wouldn't budge.
And Jizo's mouth was moving slightly.
It seemed to be saying, "Please move me to a beautiful place upstream."
He couldn't ignore the wish of his savior. When dawn broke, he put Jizo's head, whose body and head were still separated, on a cart and climbed the mountain path along the Tanohara River. After taking a break, he tried to go out again, but the wheels were frozen and wouldn't move. Looking around, he saw a beautiful view. A clear stream flowed through the mountains, and the maple trees on the riverbank were dyed bright red at the peak of their popularity.
"This is the place Jizo said he wanted to live."
Mutsugoro carefully placed Jizo's body on the riverbank and placed the severed head on his shoulder. However, he had nothing to attach the head to the body with and didn't know the technique. He had no choice but to wrap the towel he had around his neck and head back the way he came.
At that moment, something miraculous happened. Steam began to rise from under Jizo's feet. Steam then rose from the surface of the Tanohara River, and when he put his hands in the water, it was a comfortable bath.
It is said that this place where the hot water gushed forth is the present-day Kurokawa Onsen.
