No matter how many times I visit, this pagoda takes my breath away! It’s so pretty throughout the year. There are plum blossom trees, cherry blossom trees, and hydrangea on the grounds for people to enjoy. It’s also nice place to enjoy fall foliage. There are usually some volunteer guides on the grounds also. They are so nice and helpful. Lots of parking available, but they do get very busy during certain times of the year if you go on the weekend. If you’re hungry while you are here, there is a cafe that serves the roof tile noodles nearby. It’s next to the large gift shop that is located next to the parking lot. The grounds are wheelchair and stroller friendly. There is no fee to enter and view the pagoda.
I visited in May 2024. The Five story pagoda is under renovation at the moment until 2026. Please check the website before making a trip because the pagoda is covered. But you can still go around and enjoy the rest of the temple. For complete experience in Yamaguchi visit link below https://youtu.be/WKbMB8WSpgY?feature=shared
A must visit tourist spot at Yamaguchi City. An Age old Temple standing as a sign of architectural beauty and legacy of brotherhood. You can enjoy it’s unique landscape in different seasons. At night there is a special light shows I personally recommend it to enjoy...
I hadnt seen a Pagoda in a while, so this hit the spot! There is beautifully clear water below, with Koi swimming around. I managed to get some nice pictures with flowers blooming in the foreground. You can also walk behind the Pagoda to get some unique shots from above.
Pagoda and temple is free to enter and very peaceful and scenic. There is a koi fish amd turtle pond. Also, a cemetery so please be quiet and respectful.
Go up around the Back! This is a beautiful pagoda that creates in its viewers a little bit of a Zen (or if you prefer, God's glory) experience. Why is this? Why do visitors say that it takes their breath away. My interpretation is that it looks like a lot of houses or temples stacked one on top of another. We are used to seeing the temple roof shape of each story of the pagoda. In the grounds of the temple there are similar roofs, of other similar temple structures but these are arranged horizontally with at most a slight vertical misalignment due to the temple structures and their roofs being built on a slope, which with the admixture of perspective, allows us to see when we view a temple complex or townscape a cascade of roofs stretching off into the distance. And so it is when we view this pagoda our brains attempt to interpret its form in the same familiar way, as smaller and smaller, more distant roofs, on the side of the mountain, but then, whammy, it is not perspective, it is not a slope, these roofs are stacked. And in that whattheblazes moment of reappraisal, our analytical mind is stumped, stopped and dumbfounded, and we are given a glimpse of that which a Zen scholar calls "the purity of experience" or perhaps, in Christian parlance, we see the light. In any event it is a very beautiful pagoda. It contains a library of books that no one reads. And those in the know can go up around the back to stand at eye level with the middle of the pagoda and look down upon the temple sharing the same grounds. Please see the photo.
Pagoda is under construction until March 2026. Pictures of it are gorgeous and the park is absolutely beautiful.
The temple highlights the symbolic architecture of Japan and the surroundings gives a feel of tranquility.

This place might be relatively less well-known, but it truly boasts a stunning garden. You can sit inside the room and enjoy the serene harmony of Zen aesthetics blended with nature. The architecture itself is also a fascinating highlight. Highly recommended for everyone to visit.
One of the most beautiful place in Yamaguchi city considering serenity and greenery. Recommend visit in spring and autumn. The place has different outlooks in two different seasons. Although we have visited in spring I will try to visit again in autumn. This is a little far from Yamaguchi city considering bicycle path. However, after entering the temple we become overwhelmed seeing the surrounding beauty of the garden and adjacent area. There is a ticketing system. At first we collected two tickets for us. It is also possible to enjoy the nature of a Japanese traditional garden Inside the shrine house. They facilitate it for a comfortable sitting. A Japanese lady also helped us to capture our couple photo. We are very great full to her generosity and kindness. My wife has a photo with her too. It was a great trip for me and my spouse.
It was a calming place, my kids were very excited when they saw a monkey in the woods. Entrance fee is only 300¥
I enjoyed taking photos around the grounds, with the interior of the building next to the zen garden being my highlight. I also enjoyed walking around the garden.
Beautiful place: magnificent palace and garden, hidden in nature. We were lucky enough to witness the Sakamoto installation, and listening to the sounds he created from nature looking at the garden has been an almost transcendental experience...
Beautiful & historic place. This is no.2 precious sightseeing spot in Yamaguchi city. Here is Japanese garden version 2 in Japan compared with the first version in Kyoto but not so crowded. We can enjoy the peaceful and fresh pure atmosphere here.
Nice temple with a beautiful zen garden.
A very impressive Zen temple below the mountains on the edge of Yamaguchi city. The buildings are of unusual design and are in excellent condition. The compound incorporates several gardens. Those in front of the temple are of raked stones, while the garden behind is grass, moss, stones, and a large central pond. The temple and gardens have a tranquil atmosphere. Incidentally, the climb up to the Bishamondo behind the green garden isn't worth the effort.

Another stunning example of Japan's history and culture showcased by their temples, shrines and museums. A must visit by anyone willing to learn and experience everything Japan has to offer.
Although the Pagoda is currently under construction until March of 2026, the surrounding grounds are beautiful. Rurikoji Temple is one of Yamaguchi’s most stunning and historically significant sites. Its five-story pagoda, built in 1442, is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful, rivaling those in Kyoto and Nara. Set within Kozan Park, the temple grounds are peaceful and well-maintained, offering a serene atmosphere perfect for reflection and photography. With the cherry blossoms blooming, it makes for great pictures. Unlike more crowded temples in major cities, Rurikoji offers a quieter and more intimate experience, making it a must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a peaceful escape. If you’re in Yamaguchi, this temple is definitely worth a stop.
Lovely temples with a lot to take in. Very busy, but nowhere near Kyoto levels. The five storey pagoda is the main attraction. Go up close to see how beautifully built it is.
Unfortunately we did not see the temple as there were construction works, however we really enjoyed the park itself. It was very calming en peaceful, and I can only imagine how beautiful it must be to see the temple as well!
The five storied pagoda and grounds. Pagoda currently under renovation at the time of writing (November 2023), whilst the grounds and temple are still open. Quaint and peaceful, well maintained, and not too busy on a Saturday morning.
The place is very nice and have a historic value also. We have visited by riding by cycle. There is a recent renovation work going on in 5 storied Ruriko-ji temple. We became a little bit frustrated since it was not visible. Due to construction work a whole cover has been covering the entire temple. There were some ice cream shop near the park and gate also. But remember all shops closed sharply at 5:00 PM. Overall, this is a nice place to visit when you were at Yamaguchi City.
Very disappointed. After being featured by Newyork Times 52 places to visit in 2024, they have been maintaining the main attraction covering it up with walls... What the hell is Yamaguchi government thinking about when there is such a huge potential to attract tourists?? I hope someone takes an action immediately to uncover it and show it to the public or call out to the public that this is not the time to visit Yamaguchi.
A very beautiful and out of the world place. We visited this temple in March, and the cherry blossom season had just started. It was a lovely experience, which i will never forget. We took a bus from the Yamaguchi station to the temple. After visiting the temple, we walked down the river walk and reached the station. The walk too was very scenic, and it's an experience which will be treasured forever.

beautiful and lives up to the title of "national treasure"! enjoyed the bubble show under a semi full moon! highly recommend visiting for an evening walk!
Kozan park at Hirai Area is nice place to roaming with family as well as some other social activities. It's very cozy and on the Bank of River. The park fully bloom with beautiful Sakura. There is a little public amenities here but you can enjoy nature. Parking is available. Public bath is limited in a area near the middle of the park.
The pagoda is so beautiful here. We learned more information on the Mori Clan. We've visited the graves in Hagi, so to know they extended here in Hofu as well was interesting. Kozan park is very peaceful. The kids enjoyed feeding the fish and the back drop of the pagoda was absolutely breath-taking. Seeing the green pay phone was such a hit with the children as well. We will be back to explore more of Hofu.
Peaceful, well kept grounds, home to the Ruriko-ji pagoda and temple.
Huge ancient wooden pagoda, said to be one of the three main ones in Japan. Beautiful and quiet area, walked over from yamaguchi station following the canal
This place was lovely and very quiet. Especially beautiful when there was a small festival at night. That was very beautiful!
Very nice, clean and peaceful place. Wewent there at night. The reflection of the pagoda from the water is breathtaking.
The place is incredible. The air is so pure and fresh. The scenery is great. The shrink is amazing. The pagoda is well architectural designed. If you come to Yamaguchi, I really really recommend you to put this place into the first list of your visit plan.

The building and its surroundings were clean. I liked all the flora too, the trees were very pleasing. But some of the visiters... i think they were, were quite akward. There was one short ginger haired man and a really tall brown haired one lmao. Overall a 5 star!
as a chuuya fan i enjoyed my experience here a lot. I saw a 5'3 ginger who is wearing a hat standing outside the building tho..
Amazing. Staff were incredibly nice, especially when I mentioned I was a writer. They were very friendly and warm, even letting me stay after I toured the museum since it was raining outside and giving me a map of other places related to Nakahara sensei. Very quiet, I felt a bit bad for my shoes squeaking from the rain, but everyone was polite and kind.
this place was really beautiful, from the trees naturally grown to the Surrounding buildings, although there was a very Short-tempered 5'3 ginger.. he was pretty loud and Kept shouting "dazai"... did he mean the writer? i dont know.. but overall its a 10 from me. loved this place.
Very good monument but a ginger kept looking at me
my memorial is better than that chibi’s~
I like its buildings.

450 yen for a black coffee, 200 yen to use the (very hot!) foot bath. On a cold day, this will keep you feeling warm. You can even enjoy the hot water from inside the cafe. The towel they provide is for drying off your feet after you've bathed, not for washing before hand (as I had mistakenly assumed).
This a very nice place to visit. This cafe has an entry fee ¥200 for the garden however it is not necessary if you want to enjoy from just the entrance building. You can order some food item and sit before the glass while enjoying foot spa. We the 4 people visited there 1st week of October. It was very decorative. At first we pay ¥200 as entry fee then ordered some food item for us. I ordered Lemmon Lassi. It was so testy. We also wear short form of KIMONO. I visited earlier but did not wear this dress. But it feels good while wearing this dress. It’s free who do not feel comfortable to their dress. In this place the Japanese couple and others were very eager to talk with us. We also talked with them and have some fun with them. We enjoyed a beautiful evening in that place.
Simply a great place to experience the joy of foot bath. Only ¥200 for adult and ¥100 for 100 for children, not only you’d be getting premium foot bath place, they also provide free yukata and clogs to use while you’re there. Their coffee is also especially good and you can enjoy it while foot bathing. Very soothing and relaxing for your feet especially when you’ve walked far enough during your trip. Beautiful and pleasant atmosphere, very polite and helpful staffs. I would recommend this place a thousand times over the free foot bath spa.
Nice place to visit. I had a Yuzu tea for the cold day. The food onsen is great if people are tired
This place is a short distance (10 to 15 minutes’ walk) from the train station. The building design (both internal and external) is amazing as this building seems not really blended (lol) into this quiet town. It offers amazing footbath (outdoor and indoor footbath, please try both) with a minimal fee. You can order snacks and drinks and the staff here will bring it to you to enjoy your food while soaking your feet into the footbath. Nothing much can do in this town (it is really quiet and please take note on the train schedule as the train frequency is low) other than visiting the onsen hotel here. You can also notice many small “fox” statue during the walk to this place, and it seems like a signature of this town (yes, you immediately will notice the giant white fox while existing the Yudaonsen station. You can visit this town/ footbath if you have free time and the rail pass.
Nice place to chill. ¥200/person for the foot bath plus the desserts cost ¥450 each.
Great footbath for 200 yen. Stayed for an hour.
Beautiful outlook. The foot onsen charge 200yen. The souvenir is great but the coffee is just ok.

To see our favorite art exhibition, we drove specifically here, although the journey was a bit long, it was well worth it. If you want to see the special exhibitions currently on display, it is wise to check the official website first. We really enjoy the exhibition setup and the museum shop here.
Nice local prefectural art museum, with rotating exhibitions. Currently the main exhibition showcasing works from Shigeru Matsuda, from October to December 2023.
This is just near to Yamaguchi city office. Not so large but you can enjoy art work. Children also enjoy VR inside the Museum. I recommend it.
Saw the Ghibli Park exhibition, a nice technical look behind the scenes of how animation is made, and an intentional and persuasive argument to go to Ghibli Park.
A good place to visit on a off day. They have a small collection of photos and contemporary arts. One can enjoy passing some time here.
Pretty good! No cafe still though!

There's also a tatami-floored relaxing structure, and a wonderful footbath to feel the power of Yudaonsen onsen water. Lots of kids around, having a blast in the mid-sized play park complete with bonsai. It is well maintained, and shady.
Great place to relax. A historic location, a small koi pond, play equipment for the children, grass to play or chill on. Toilets handy, convenience store around the corner for when you need refreshment. Watch out for the drunken college students kicking bicycles down.
Small, cute and chill park.
Very attractive park, children can play with many tools, and especially free foot onsen for us after playing is very good choice
Not much to see here. Good start to explore the yuda onsen area. Dip your feet on some of the hot spring dipping area to relax before going for some real onsen experience.
It has an onsen, free for everyone. One can enjoy his/her moments while the children can play in the park.

Full of local produce especially a wide variety of pumpkins, fish sausage and processed fish on wood, local sake, and the usual boxes of confectionary. I especially like the pumpkin flavoured ice cream which we eat on seats outside (see photo). The compost from a local food processing plant is cheap too.
The ice cream cones are awesome! You can also buy other Yamaguchi made produce as well.
It is clean and great
(Translated by Google) The building, parking lot, and location were all good. The brick-colored tiled roof design evokes the image of a traditional Japanese house in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the spacious, bright, and clean interior allows for leisurely shopping, the large parking lot, and the Kirarahama Nature Observation Park and Kirara Expo Memorial Park are also nearby. The restroom inside the store was quite small (for the size of the store), and I was surprised to see that a group of elderly local women had brought several shopping carts there, so the entire restroom was taken up. I wonder if they used the carts instead of "walking sticks"? Maybe this is the "generosity" that is unique to Yamaguchi that allows this kind of thing to be allowed? (sweat) There is a fast food snack corner and something like a restaurant, but the restaurant also serves mainly wheat-based dishes such as noodles. I wanted to eat rice, so I decided not to eat inside the store and instead bought two types of bento (one for about 500 yen and one for about 800 yen), but neither was very tasty, with thin fillings and thick battered fried side dishes, and many of the other side dishes tasted like medicine? This may have been a consideration to prevent spoilage, but compared to the bentos at other roadside stations, it was disappointing in terms of taste and health > < But still, it's a valuable bento that you'll be grateful for when you come to the nature observation park. As with other roadside stations, the souvenirs were mostly processed foods full of additives, and there wasn't much I wanted to buy, but Daiko Bussan's "Natsumikan Agar" had few additives and was delicious with a gentle sweetness and a slight acidity ☆ It also becomes a firm, chewy summer snack when chilled in the refrigerator. I also recommend Yamaguchi nori, which has no added seasonings. I bought the roasted nori (unflavored, additive-free) cut into eight pieces and ready to eat to make up for the lack of vegetables in the bentos here, but it was crispy, light, and had a nice aroma, so it was delicious ☆ (Original)

Great. The Japanese archictecture, interior design, and garden make for an other worldly experience. I have a theory that all the rectangles or the rice straw mats, and interior sluding doors, and window frames are of a variety of sizes such that at times smaller rectangles are nearer and bigger rectangles are further away (the reverse of normal perspectival effect on size) such that it becomes difficult for the brain to process the interior as a cartesian space, leaving you with the unprocessed pure experience or a tiny glimpse of enlightenment. The garden is especially beatiful in autumn. The main large room costs 100 yen to enter.
Significant old restaurant converted to a museum, 100 tatami mat room is impressive and the calligraphy on the walls was painted by visiting prime ministers. Worth visiting.
Wonderful staff -- we were given a tour jf the entire facility by a lovely English-speaking guide. Fascinating history!
Historical place with outstanding landscape beauty!
(Translated by Google) [Autumn leaves are beautiful] A facility relocated from a former Japanese restaurant. The autumn leaves in the courtyard seen from the hallway were beautiful. It was interesting to see many plaques of politicians and celebrities such as Shinzo Abe, Kakuei Tanaka, and Eisaku Sato on display. I think it's worth stopping by since it's free including parking.

This is a good spot for taking pictures, with beauty everywhere, and it depends on how you grasp the light and shadow. The entrance fee is very cheap, which can only be regarded as maintenance and cleaning fees. The estimated stay time is about 1 hour.
(Translated by Google) This building was donated to Yamaguchi City by the owner of the old restaurant "Saiko-tei" (Saiko Saito) and relocated here. I know what it looked like in the old days, so I'm glad it has been relocated and restored to its original state. The parking lot is large and can accommodate about 100 cars, including buses and taxis. The rooms are available for rent at a very reasonable price. It is also used for meetings and exhibitions. An admission fee of 100 yen is required for the main hall, but the plaques of past politicians that are preserved there are well worth seeing and are valuable. The staff in the office are all very polite, kind, and use proper language, so it is a pleasant experience. They give polite directions and answer any questions you may have politely. This teamwork is amazing. I think other facilities should follow this example. The admission fee is only 100 yen for the main hall, but perhaps they are able to operate because of subsidies from Yamaguchi City? I hope they will maintain the current system forever. As a user, I think it would be even better if there was a room or even a veranda with a "matcha seat" where you could have a coffee shop. Is that possible? I would like you to come up with some good ideas.
