Rurikoji Temple is a 15th-century Buddhist temple located in Yamaguchi, Japan. It is renowned for its grand five-story pagoda, which is considered one of the most beautiful pagodas in the country and has been designated as a national treasure. The temple grounds also feature an elaborate garden and are part of the stunning Kozan Park, where visitors can explore historical buildings such as storehouses, a bell tower, and a museum.
Another stunning example of Japan's history and culture showcased by their temples, shrines and museums. A must visit by anyone willing to learn and experience everything Japan has to offer.
Sharaz H — Google review
Although the Pagoda is currently under construction until March of 2026, the surrounding grounds are beautiful. Rurikoji Temple is one of Yamaguchi’s most stunning and historically significant sites. Its five-story pagoda, built in 1442, is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful, rivaling those in Kyoto and Nara. Set within Kozan Park, the temple grounds are peaceful and well-maintained, offering a serene atmosphere perfect for reflection and photography. With the cherry blossoms blooming, it makes for great pictures. Unlike more crowded temples in major cities, Rurikoji offers a quieter and more intimate experience, making it a must-visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a peaceful escape. If you’re in Yamaguchi, this temple is definitely worth a stop.

Lovely temples with a lot to take in. Very busy, but nowhere near Kyoto levels. The five storey pagoda is the main attraction. Go up close to see how beautifully built it is.
Alun E — Google review
Unfortunately we did not see the temple as there were construction works, however we really enjoyed the park itself. It was very calming en peaceful, and I can only imagine how beautiful it must be to see the temple as well!
Laura D — Google review
The five storied pagoda and grounds. Pagoda currently under renovation at the time of writing (November 2023), whilst the grounds and temple are still open. Quaint and peaceful, well maintained, and not too busy on a Saturday morning.

The place is very nice and have a historic value also. We have visited by riding by cycle. There is a recent renovation work going on in 5 storied Ruriko-ji temple. We became a little bit frustrated since it was not visible. Due to construction work a whole cover has been covering the entire temple. There were some ice cream shop near the park and gate also. But remember all shops closed sharply at 5:00 PM. Overall, this is a nice place to visit when you were at Yamaguchi City.
Hassan R — Google review
Very disappointed. After being featured by Newyork Times 52 places to visit in 2024, they have been maintaining the main attraction covering it up with walls... What the hell is Yamaguchi government thinking about when there is such a huge potential to attract tourists?? I hope someone takes an action immediately to uncover it and show it to the public or call out to the public that this is not the time to visit Yamaguchi.
Sky N — Google review
A very beautiful and out of the world place. We visited this temple in March, and the cherry blossom season had just started. It was a lovely experience, which i will never forget. We took a bus from the Yamaguchi station to the temple. After visiting the temple, we walked down the river walk and reached the station. The walk too was very scenic, and it's an experience which will be treasured forever.

Akiyoshido Cave, nestled in Mine City, is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its illuminated chambers adorned with stunning limestone stalactites and stalagmites. As the largest karst cave in Japan, it boasts impressive 80-meter-high ceilings and stretches an astonishing 10 kilometers underground.
Akiyoshido Cave is located in the country of Japan and its very peaceful. There wasn’t too many tourists, which made the trip relaxing and enjoyable. The cave is the largest limestone cove in Japan. As I explored the cave, I saw stalactites everywhere and if the water drops on your head, supposedly it’s a sign of a good luck. You should probably wear a jacket since the cave does get a little chilly. If you have young kids, this might not be a place to go unless you intend on carrying them by hand. It’s not really stroller friendly but they do have elevators. After walking through the cave, I went to the observation deck to see the 300 million years old limestone plateau. This was my favorite part!! Go in the spring-fall time frame to see the luscious scenery of greens. This was probably one of the neatest thing I’ve seen in my life.

An unforgettable experience! Akiyoshidō Cave is huge, beautifully lit, and easy to walk through — perfect for all ages. The atmosphere is peaceful and cool (about 17°C year-round), making it a great place to visit even in the summer. The cave is full of amazing natural features like underground waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and unique rock formations. The “100 Plates” (Hyakumai-zara) were especially stunning. It’s not too dark or claustrophobic, and the walking path is very well maintained with handrails and lights. You can walk the whole main route in about an hour, and there’s even an elevator that takes you up to the Akiyoshidai Plateau above if you want to explore more. The entrance fee is reasonable (around ¥1,200), and definitely worth it. It’s not super touristy, which makes it feel even more special. Just wear comfortable shoes — some spots are a little slippery. Highly recommended if you’re in Yamaguchi Prefecture!
Nevaeh T — Google review
I first visited the Akiyoshidai Observatory and then parked at the nearby elevator parking lot to explore Akiyoshi Cave. The day was a bit humid, but inside the cave it was cool and refreshing, and I had a great time. I had seen many photos of the impressive cave entrance before, but the inside was just as mysterious and stunning. It may go without saying, but since there are no restrooms inside the cave, it’s probably better not to drink too much water before entering. From the observatory to the cave, the whole experience was wonderful — truly something Yamaguchi can be proud of.

very solemn place, the negative ion Nature can be a source of motivation by improving mood, reducing stress, and fostering creativity and a sense of awe. Spending time in natural environments can also provide inspiration, promote physical activity, and teach valuable life lessons about patience, adaptability, and selflessness🩷
Yuja T — Google review
An amazing experience for everyone that love exploring the beauty of what lies beneath. The cave lightening and ambiance are done perfectly to enhance your experience while exploring this marvel of nature. The newly finished mural is a wonderful in itself. A must visit.
Sharaz H — Google review
I highly recommend against visiting this cave, the entire area is just a tourist trap and when you get into the cave, not only the ticket price is expensive, you need to pay more if you want to go into a special "adventure" path, the cave is bland at best and I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 caves I visited. My verdict: really not worth it
Richard S — Google review
It’s a must visit limestone cave when you are in Mini City in Yamaguchi, especially during summer. The beautiful and clean cave temperature is about 17 degree. The walkway is all nicely and carefully paved with safety and comfort in consideration. Entrance fee is JPY1300 per person for 1 hour walk. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes. There are 2 types of walks, the up course and down course walk. We took the down course walk and completed in about 45 mins. Up course requires a fee of JPY300. We love the walk. The cave is dimly lit to give a feel of darkness in the cave but not too dim so you can see the steps and surroundings. We enjoyed the walk very much and wouldn’t mind coming again if we happen to be Yamaguchi.
SY — Google review
I went there on a rainy day. Took the bus from shin-yamaguchi to the cave, it was really easy to get there! The Cave was really really beautiful the guide in english really interesting and you can re-enter the cave if you take the elevator to the observation deck and want to go back in. Just show the ticket again. I think it war okay didnt need a jacket had t-shirt and a long sleeve shirt on (took the long sleeve off later) the cave had a temperature of 17 °C. For me it was worth it!

Akiyoshidai is a stunning karst landscape in Japan, featuring rolling plateaus and limestone rocks that resemble sheep. The area boasts the Akiyoshido Cave, one of the country's most famous limestone caves, as well as the Beppu Benten Pond with its crystal-clear blue water.
One of the “Must-Go” place if you’re in Shimonoseki. Japan’s largest karst plateau, known for its dramatic limestone landscape and vast underground caves. Perfect spot for a scenic drive 🚘🏍️ There’s a cafe☕️ and an information center

been here today. the view is another level of gorgeousness yet the facilities are insufficient. neither food store nor staffs are available along the karst road so no one we can ask in case we meet trouble during our trip, especially if we are cycling. and the cave staff said that bringing food are not allowed. even at the camping ground you will not meet any foodstore or restaurant or cafe whatsoever. even if you stay at the camping ground food are not sold except you have reserved the previous day. i think this place has huge potential but unfortunately they have poor management.
Cila S — Google review
I went via the cycling route from Ogori, the table land was vast and although it was a weekend it wasn't crowded at all. There are benches to sit and enjoy the view. They have clean toilets as well, but I only found japanese toilets for women🥲

Today is the Japanese public holiday. I rushed for coming here from Tokyo. It was so big to have a trip by walk in a day. But I was satisfied because I could watch the biggest Karst area in Japan. This area is connected with Akiyoshi Cave too.

Hagi Castle Town is a beautifully preserved heritage district in Japan, known for its Meiji-era houses that were once home to merchants. The area offers a glimpse into the past with former samurai residences and merchant houses lining the quiet streets. Established as a castle town in 1604, Hagi flourished under Mori Terumoto's rule and remains one of Japan's most historic cities.
Historical houses are giving this little town an idyllic ambience which invites you to stroll around and explore this place. Lots of pottery in nice historic buildings add even more charm.

A very tranquil ancient town perfect for leisurely walks and admiring the marks left by old times. We happened to encounter a beautiful sunset on the day we went there, with orange clouds filling the entire sky, making these alleyways even more tranquil and elegant... I hope to visit here again next time and stay a bit longer to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Beppu Benten Pond is a stunning natural gem that captivates visitors with its serene beauty. This shallow pool boasts crystal-clear, blue-green waters enriched with calcium, creating an enchanting emerald hue. Surrounded by lush trees and charming stone bridges, it offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
" Emerald Green + Clean Clean Water " Beppu Benten Pond — a sacred blue gem near Akiyoshidai. When visiting Akiyoshidai, this spot is always recommended alongside it—and for good reason. The water is unbelievably clear, with a emerald green that looks surreal even without any filter. It’s no surprise that it’s been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Famous Waters,” with a spring so pure, you can actually drink straight from it. Personally, whenever I visit Akiyoshidai, I make it a point to stop by Beppu Benten Pond as well. It’s a moment of quiet, sacred serenity—where I can sit with the stillness, take in the green/blue tranquility, and enjoy a cup of unbelievably clean, delicious spring water before heading home.
Google review
A cobalt blue pond, fresh trout, and limestone caves nearby to explore. Super pristine and clear water. You can see clearly to the pond's bottom, as though it were made of perfectly clear glass. Its waters are used for irrigation and drinking, and also for the nearby trout farm. There is a trout farm just next to the pond. I guest the house is the trout farm’s owner.
Junes T — Google review
Went on a weekday afternoon, and we had the place all to ourselves. Very nice and serene place. Sat by the pond for a few minutes and took pictures. Worth the extra 15min drive from Akiyoshido Cave if you have the time to spare. Bring bug spray!
Cecile N — Google review
This was a fun and unique experience. From the constant cool breeze that reminds you that you're not in Tokyo any more, to the crystal clear fresh spring water, which was very cold, to the beautifully taken care of fish farm. For a small fee you can rent a fishing pole, bait and catch the fish in the main pond. The best part, you can take it to the small restaurant and they will clean, prep and cook your catch. Now...the sunrise at the kids playground on the other hand...
Sharaz H — Google review
Bring bottles of your own or buy their souvenir bottles at the gift shop for about $300 yen/bottle. The water is pure enough to drink straight out of it.

Tonkatsu restaurant
Originator Kawara Soba Takase Gohandokoro Ryuan is a must-visit spot in Yamaguchi Prefecture, renowned for its signature dish, Kawara Soba. This delightful meal features green tea soba noodles served on hot roof tiles, topped with tender beef, eggs, and fresh vegetables. The restaurant offers easy access just five minutes from the Ogori Interchange, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the region.
(Translated by Google) Visited on Friday, April 18, 2025 【order】 ・Original Kawara Soba 2 servings ・Tonkatsu set meal This is a famous restaurant where you can eat Kawara Soba, a specialty of Yamaguchi Prefecture. I visited the store just as it opened on a weekday, so the store was empty. The impact of seeing the soba noodles on top of a real roof tile was so impressive that I was glad I ordered it just for that! When I dipped the soba noodles into the warm noodle soup and ate them, the fragrant aroma that I don't usually get from soba noodles filled my mouth and it was so delicious! The roof tiles are heated hot and over time the noodles become crispy like yakisoba, which is delicious. Is it the pork on top? The kinshi tamago also went perfectly with the soba noodles! It was quite filling, but the taste of the grated lemon and maple leaves made the second half refreshing and I was able to finish the whole meal. I didn't touch it much, but the tonkatsu was of course delicious! Thank you for the meal(*'▽'*) (Original) 2025.04.18(金)訪問 【注文】 ・元祖瓦そば 2人前 ・とんかつ定食 山口県名物の瓦そばが食べれる有名なお店です。

(Translated by Google) This is a local branch of the famous Kawara Soba restaurant "Takase". Even in Yamaguchi Prefecture, you have to drive a long way to the main store on the Sea of Japan side, but this store can be reached in about 5 minutes after exiting the Ogori Interchange, so it's easy to stop by even if you're passing through Yamaguchi Prefecture. Needless to say, Kawara Soba is the main menu, and the most popular set with rice called Unameshi. You can enjoy the fragrant chasoba as it crunches on the grilled tiles, and it's visually pleasing, but Kansai people tend to prefer the slightly sweeter soba soup. But this was a fun and delicious sightseeing experience. The una rice had the flavor of the eel oil, but it was a little strong and didn't have a seared feel, so it was refreshing and delicious when mixed with the dashi chazuke. Although the reviews are mixed, I think it is a valuable dish that has become established as a local food.

The founder of this restaurant invented it in 1962. The origin of this dish is the Seinan War❗️ I didn't know that... It was inspired by the story that during the Seinan War in 1877, the soldiers of the Satsuma army surrounding Kumamoto Castle used tiles to grill and eat wild plants/meat during long breaks in the field. It was developed using a unique method using Japanese tiles that were decades old. Eating kawara soba at the restaurant where it originated. I liked it even more after learning its origin. The photo shows two servings of kawara soba. It was an experience I'd never had before, serving kawara soba on tiles at 350°C. In addition, the first page of the menu states that the restaurant is a continuous employment support facility based on the Act on Welfare and Support for Persons with Disabilities. Usually it's a menu or seasonal specials, and it's the page most used for sales. We use it for customers and staff. A person with a disability was serving customers, and worked hard. Yamaguchi Ube Airport is a small yet beautiful domestic airport located in Yamaguchi city, offering limited but sufficient facilities for travelers. While it may be small, the airport boasts a spacious and beautiful park that has become a popular spot for families to visit on weekends, especially during these times of isolation due to the pandemic. The airport provides easy access to nearby areas such as Onoda and Kitakyushu, making it a convenient travel hub within Japan.
Small well-decorated Airport... Not that much rush... Gift shops , Coffee shops , food court are available... Comfortable and specious waiting place... Railway station is just 550 m away...

A small but beautiful domestic airport in Yamaguchi city you can travel within Japan. It has a very big parking area which is toll free. I usually use this airport to travel to and from Tokyo. I like it.
Md U — Google review
Small and compact but still well organized. However there is no tourist attractions nearby. I will never use this airport again for that reason. There are airports nearby with much better locations. 30mins bus ride (910¥) to Shin Yamaguchi Station.

Compared to airports in northern Japan, the airports in Yamaguchi, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima truly stand out. Yamaguchi Airport, in particular, impressed me with its cleanliness and exceptionally polite staff. The check-in process was seamless, and passing through security took only a matter of minutes. This efficiency left me with plenty of time to unwind at their charming kiosk, where I enjoyed fantastic eclairs and sandwiches. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with the organization, service, and comfort of Yamaguchi Airport. It’s a shining example of how airports should be!

First time here and just like the other places in rural japan even the airports are quiet which i like. No chaos, no children running or crying. Just typical japanese ambience. Wait till i get to the city maybe my comment will change.

The airport and its Park which is a very family according to type of Park is a great place to hang out on Saturday and Sunday. With the coronavirus these days and people have been isolated in their homes recently many people have gone to the airport and its Park to fill the sense of freedom that actually never really went away but was controlled by some mysterious event worldwide.

Shin-Yamaguchi Station is a key stop on the main shinkansen line, providing easy access to Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo. From here, travelers can transfer to a local JR train for a quick 25-minute ride to JR Yamaguchi Station. The station itself has undergone recent renovations, boasting a modern and aesthetically pleasing design. While food and coffee options are limited within the station, visitors can explore nearby convenience stores and restaurants for refreshments.
Shin Yamaguchi Station is heart of Yamaguchi as a means of communication. It’s a very beautifully decorated station and you can found plenty of souvenirs shop and information center as well. You can found available bus from this station if you want to visit tourist places in Yamaguchi. Happy Journey.

Shin-Yamaguchi is key to connect Yamaguchi with rest of the Japan via train. This station has both local train and shin-kansen in different platforms. There are gift shops, information centre and waiting place. At the ground floor you will also get available bus services.

A small Shinkansen Station where we visited in Feb 2025. However, I could ride Hello Kitty Shinkansen, beautiful 500 series, to here and take a good photo of the train. Some store at the station that you can buy the souvenir and food.
Kit L — Google review
A modern, well-maintained, and managed JR shinkansen station along the Sanyo shinkansen line. There are a "moderate" number of options for food or snacks before the shinkansen trip, and modern bathrooms, an information desk and ticket center. To me, what is most striking about this modern, amazingly-designed shin station is the entrance, which features walls of real plants, covering the entire surface of both walls floor to ceiling, which flow down onto floor planters. It is a striking thing to see, and worthy of slowing down and admiring this unique aspect to this shin station. I was only passing through; transiting to the Yamaguchi JR line.
Miku U — Google review
Quite big with modern interior, but there’s not much else going on. Facilities like toilets are modern and well maintained. There isn’t much to do outside the station also, it’s basically just a nice transit station for a quick and short transit. There’s a convenience store which sells a lot of unique local products, even some Hello Kitty Shinkansen merch.
Bayu U — Google review
Newly renovated station and some parts are still being renovated. Beautiful and clean design. There's not much food or coffee option at the station. Btw, you can't use IC card at this station as they dont have the facility as yet (not sure if they are going to add this in the future). If you arrive from other station to this station using IC card, you have to speak to the station master at the shinkansen exit. You ll need to pay cash for the travel that you've done and he/she will fix the record of your last trip from the card.

The rails curve toward western mountains. Steam trains and bullet trains meet here — past and present in quiet conversation. Tourist Tip: Transfer to SL Yamaguchi steam train and access to Yuda Onsen. A charming blend of nostalgia and motion.

Hagi Castle Ruins, the former site of a 17th-century stronghold, offer visitors a glimpse into Japan's rich history. Although the original castle is no longer standing, the foundation and some stone walls remain intact. The surrounding town features well-preserved samurai residences and merchant quarters, including the Kikuya Residence, an Important Cultural Property showcasing Edo period architecture.
It's one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan, and you can get a stamp at the entrance. The ruins are well-preserved and surrounded by lots of giant old trees. Inside there is also a small teahouse which seems to work only on weekdays. A quiet and peaceful place with almost no one around. You can enter for free if you have the Hagi Wonder Pass.
Sunny S — Google review
The restored redoubts and moat of ancient Hagi Castle. Some shops selling a wide selection of Hagi Yaki Pottery in front. A nice walk with a somewhat spooky inner sanctum shrine. Definitely worth a visit when in Hagi.
John D — Google review
A nice, quite secluded place. Very few locals around. A bicycle-riding postman, some fishermen fishing from the stone jetty on the beach. The streets and buildings seem frozen in time from the old feudal days. Most seem old and original. A must-go-to town for lovers of old Japan. The Hagi Castle ruins are just big rock walls. But pretty impressive even without the old castle. Very accessible by highway bus from Shin Yamaguchi station.
Shizuka M — Google review
Quite beautiful in spring and a large castle ground where people even come to practice some sports drills. Note that the castle has been destroyed and removed, leaving only the grounds. There's also a shrine built here. There is a small fee (about 300 yen) to enter.

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic site, established in 904 and dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of academics. It is renowned for its seasonal plum blossoms and traditional festivals. Many visitors come to pray for success in academics and passing entrance exams. The shrine offers a beautiful view of Hofu City and has parking lots nearby.
Those who love historical momentum and look for peace in mind; should try this auspicious place. I recommend the late afternoon to dusk is the best time for visiting. We can enjoy sunset from top and can have a birds eye view of the city at valley. Last but not the least, the ray of the setting sun creates a dramatic climax, which offers an ample opportunity for cinematic photography...

The park features an expansive grassland with limestone formations and vast underground caves. It is renowned for its stunning karst landscape, including unusual limestone pillar-like rock formations and the Akiyoshido Cave, one of Japan's largest limestone caves.
What a gem. We hired a car, as we were not sure what the public transport would be like. Amazing cave system. We visited late September during the week (not too busy), but can imagine it could get very busy during holidays and weekends. We didn't have enough time to do any walking in the national park, but it looked as a lovely place for some walks.

The self-drive option offers a leisurely pace, letting visitors take their time at each animal exhibit while enjoying informative audio guides available in English.
This was my first time at a safari zoo and it was really amazing. There's two options for the safari, you can take your own car and drive through, or you can ride their bus. We took our own car, and they provided a tablet with English audio so we could learn about the animals. No one really rushes you so you can take as much time as you want at each section. Next time, I'd try taking the bus because they feed the animals! After the safari, they have ice cream and various exhibits and petting zoos!

This is was cool! The drive through safari was very cool and because we went in the winter there was not a lot of people. The petting zoo was a dream! Would highly recommend going on a week day or in the late fall early winter as there was not a lot of people. I could see how it would get very crowded.
Mackenna B — Google review
Family-friendly safari park with carnival rides, a little ways off the beaten path. Allows for closer interactions with animals than Western zoos or wild animal parks. For example, the petting zoo includes a wallaby enclosure, and the safari bus tour allows you to feed lions through little plexiglass doors on the side of the bus. We were even able to pet a baby lion cub (a special event - they don't have a neverending supply of lion cubs). Some of the viewing enclosures are on the small side and the amusement park needs a fresh coat of paint, but otherwise an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. About two hours by car from Hiroshima.
Jacob J — Google review
This place was so cool. I loved getting to see all of the animals roaming in the open. It was so cool to drive through in our own vehicle and take our time viewing the different animals. There are no restrooms inside the drive through or feeding bus tour area. You have to use the restroom before you enter or when you exit. We spent 5,470 yen in tolls and around 6,000 for entrance for 4 people. We also paid 200 yen for food to feed the animals with. Once you drive through the park you can get out and interact with the different animals in the petting zoo. There were a few inclines but nothing too bad. You can also enter and exit the park as many times as you want for the day that you pay. They also accept yen and card. To pay for food to feed the animals you will need yen. There is a souvenir shop and small cafe to get food if you do not bring your own. We brought our own food. I loved how close that we were able to get to all of the animals. Some of these animals, we had never seen before in person. This was a great family outing or date outing. You can spend a few hours exploring and interacting with the different animals.

Great time for kids. You can drive through yourself was amazing being close to the animals. You don't have to rush from one section to another when you drive your own car. You can take your time look at the animals. It is great the kids can relaxe look around. We have gone twice and have a great time Everytime we go. The petting zoo is awesome they have an area to pet kangaroos, goats, llamas. You can even feed giraffes. I would suggest this trip to anyone including a family young or old.

Step over Kamakura, this is the most beautiful beach in Japan! I mean, of course that’s a matter of opinion, but this beach is stunning and far more peaceful than better-known beaches in Japan. Come here around sunset on a lightly cloudy day and listen to the waves rolling in. That’s how I spent the last day of 2020, and it was the best thing I did all year. I highly recommend this spot.

(Translated by Google) I went to get dressed and have my hair done. It seemed like only young people were writing reviews, so maybe it's embarrassing for a couple in their 40s? That's what I thought, but that wasn't the case at all, and there were some older people in the store. The staff were very kind, and I was able to choose from a wide variety of kimono items, and they carefully dressed me. My boyfriend and I took more than 1 hour and 10 minutes to get some ideas on how to wear it in a slightly different way. My boyfriend wore a hoodie tucked in. I wanted to wear navy blue, but unfortunately it wasn't available, probably because it was being cleaned. I don't have enough time to walk around town! It was so much fun that I want to go again. The matcha and Japanese sweets that came out were more delicious than I expected, and the bowl was cute, so I was hooked, so much so that I went to the tea shop the next day to buy bowls lol.

The Ruriko-ji Five Story Pagoda is a serene and picturesque Buddhist temple located in a landscaped park. This popular spot offers breathtaking views of cherry blossoms and fall foliage. Visitors can explore the pagoda and temple, both of which are free to enter. There is also a peaceful koi fish and turtle pond on the premises. However, visitors must take care to be respectful as there is also a cemetery onsite.
No matter how many times I visit, this pagoda takes my breath away! It’s so pretty throughout the year. There are plum blossom trees, cherry blossom trees, and hydrangea on the grounds for people to enjoy. It’s also nice place to enjoy fall foliage. There are usually some volunteer guides on the grounds also. They are so nice and helpful. Lots of parking available, but they do get very busy during certain times of the year if you go on the weekend. If you’re hungry while you are here, there is a cafe that serves the roof tile noodles nearby. It’s next to the large gift shop that is located next to the parking lot. The grounds are wheelchair and stroller friendly. There is no fee to enter and view the pagoda.

I visited in May 2024. The Five story pagoda is under renovation at the moment until 2026. Please check the website before making a trip because the pagoda is covered. But you can still go around and enjoy the rest of the temple. For complete experience in Yamaguchi visit link below https://youtu.be/WKbMB8WSpgY?feature=shared

Go up around the Back! This is a beautiful pagoda that creates in its viewers a little bit of a Zen (or if you prefer, God's glory) experience. Why is this? Why do visitors say that it takes their breath away. My interpretation is that it looks like a lot of houses or temples stacked one on top of another. We are used to seeing the temple roof shape of each story of the pagoda. In the grounds of the temple there are similar roofs, of other similar temple structures but these are arranged horizontally with at most a slight vertical misalignment due to the temple structures and their roofs being built on a slope, which with the admixture of perspective, allows us to see when we view a temple complex or townscape a cascade of roofs stretching off into the distance. And so it is when we view this pagoda our brains attempt to interpret its form in the same familiar way, as smaller and smaller, more distant roofs, on the side of the mountain, but then, whammy, it is not perspective, it is not a slope, these roofs are stacked. And in that whattheblazes moment of reappraisal, our analytical mind is stumped, stopped and dumbfounded, and we are given a glimpse of that which a Zen scholar calls "the purity of experience" or perhaps, in Christian parlance, we see the light. In any event it is a very beautiful pagoda. It contains a library of books that no one reads. And those in the know can go up around the back to stand at eye level with the middle of the pagoda and look down upon the temple sharing the same grounds. Please see the photo.

Nestled in the peaceful woods of Hagi, Tokoji Temple offers a delightful escape into nature, where the only sounds are the gentle calls of birds. This temple stands out with its striking Chinese-influenced architecture, featuring a vibrant red outer gate and an impressive wooden inner gate that beckons visitors to explore further. The main hall showcases traditional Chinese Zen design and houses a revered Buddha statue. However, what truly captivates is found beyond the main structures.
An incredibly special place off the beaten trail and yet one of the most interesting temples I visited in Japan. Had the whole place to myself. Explored the local pottery shops near the entrance. Highly recommend this amazing and magical place

Motivated by a video released by Fujifilm, my wife and I traveled 2.5 hours from Okayama to Hagi City. One of the main purposes of the trip was to visit Tokoji Temple. The temple was in a quite original condition, with little painting, maintenance, refurbishment work done to it. However, it did deserve some of the work to preserve it for the future generations. The gardens also needed redesigning and upgrading to make them tidier and more beautuful. The graveyard area was awesome, unique, and impressive, making us feel it worthy to take the trip on such a cold, windy, rainy day.

Probably one of the greatest places I have ever taken photos. The village and area can be so captivating when viewed from outside, but nothing comes close to experiencing it in person. The Kikuya Family Residence, once owned by a samurai clan and later by prosperous merchants in Hagi, is now an Important Cultural Property. This architectural gem showcases the opulent homes of wealthy merchants during the Edo period. Visitors can marvel at historic treasures like household items, paintings, and weapons while exploring the spacious tatami rooms overlooking a traditional Japanese garden.
The residence is impressive, and there are numerous exhibits from both medieval and modern eras. The old cash box from the beginning of 17th century and wall clock gifted to the Kikuya family by Ito Hirobumi are particularly outstanding. The staff was super polite and provided an excursion with valuable explanations in simple Japanese. Cats and badgers sometimes enter the inner garden to relax in the shadows of trees, and if you are lucky enough, you'll be able to see them🐱 I discovered the residence by accident but was very pleased with my visit.

Jyoei-ji Temple is a serene Zen temple located in the forested hills of Yamaguchi city, Japan. The temple features a beautiful garden designed after a 15th-century monk's landscape painting, which encourages mindfulness and defies interpretation. The gravel garden on the entrance side is particularly noteworthy for its peaceful ambiance. Sesshu's Garden at the rear represents Japan and is equally stunning but less crowded than Kyoto's version.
This place might be relatively less well-known, but it truly boasts a stunning garden. You can sit inside the room and enjoy the serene harmony of Zen aesthetics blended with nature. The architecture itself is also a fascinating highlight. Highly recommended for everyone to visit.

One of the most beautiful place in Yamaguchi city considering serenity and greenery. Recommend visit in spring and autumn. The place has different outlooks in two different seasons. Although we have visited in spring I will try to visit again in autumn. This is a little far from Yamaguchi city considering bicycle path. However, after entering the temple we become overwhelmed seeing the surrounding beauty of the garden and adjacent area. There is a ticketing system. At first we collected two tickets for us. It is also possible to enjoy the nature of a Japanese traditional garden Inside the shrine house. They facilitate it for a comfortable sitting. A Japanese lady also helped us to capture our couple photo. We are very great full to her generosity and kindness. My wife has a photo with her too. It was a great trip for me and my spouse.

A very impressive Zen temple below the mountains on the edge of Yamaguchi city. The buildings are of unusual design and are in excellent condition. The compound incorporates several gardens. Those in front of the temple are of raked stones, while the garden behind is grass, moss, stones, and a large central pond. The temple and gardens have a tranquil atmosphere. Incidentally, the climb up to the Bishamondo behind the green garden isn't worth the effort.

Toshunji Temple is an ancient family temple of Mori Motonari, located near the Rurikoji grounds. The temple features charming grounds and is home to the Mizu-no-ue Kiln. Visitors may encounter Maru, a dog priest, or graceful goats roaming around the area. Built in 1572, it was moved to its current location at the end of the Edo period.

It offers visitors a chance to explore the history of Japan's relationship with the Catholic faith and witness beautiful architecture. The church serves as a reminder of Yamaguchi city's cultural heritage and offers unique photo opportunities in its center. Chomonkyo is a renowned spot for vibrant fall foliage in Yamaguchi Prefecture, featuring a 5 km long boulder-strewn gorge with wooded slopes along the Abu River. The area offers hiking opportunities and picturesque views of the autumn leaves. Visitors can access the gorge from either the roadside station Nagato Gorge or Ryugufuchi, with well-maintained promenades and minimal elevation differences throughout.
the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. and i wonder how no one is tempted to going down to play in the water, keep the water clear and pure. an ideal place to go trekking.
Cila S — Google review
I started my exploration of this gorge at 11am and was pleasantly surprised by how accessible it was. The walkway was occasionally paved and only narrow at certain points. There were also frequent signs and kilometre markers to let you know where you stand on the trail. In fact, I found myself thinking that with a little effort, this might even be one of the few nature trails accessible to a person in wheelchair, at least up until the tea house about halfway into the gorge. The scenery was nice and I liked the tranquility, but I imagined the place would be more beautiful in the fall when the surrounding trees take on a shade of auburn. I took my time strolling along the path and reached the tea house around 1pm. After that, I continued on to the red bridge where I detoured into the Namakumo river to visit one of the attractions featured. Sadly, that path was closed and disused so I couldn’t get much further in. I did startle a roaming wild boar for my effort. I re-crossed the red bridge and went back onto the main path, spotted a lazy snake on the way and reached the end of the trail about 2.30pm. Not wanting to be caught here after sundown, I turned back and headed back up the trail at a faster pace, arriving at the tea house again at 3.15pm. Ate some snacks I brought and chilled at the picturesque veranda until 3.45pm, after which I continued on and reached the entrance of the gorge again around 4.45pm.

Chomonkyo is gorgeous and I love hiking here, but this pin is wrong. It doesn’t take you to either one of the entrances so that you can hike. You can’t even see the gorge from where this pin takes you. I got to Roadside Station Chomonkyo and start my hike from there, which is the backside of the trail. I’m so confused as to why there are so many great reviews and not one person has mentioned that this pin will not actually take you to Chomonkyo…. It takes you to the outside of it. I’ve always parked at Roadside Station Chomonkyo, but last weekend I though I would try to drive to the main entrance. This was the only pin I could find that said “Chomonkyo” so I followed it. Wasted my time and ended up turning around and going back to the Roadside Station.

(Translated by Google) This gorge is one of the famous spots for autumn leaves in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and has a total length of 5 km. The entrance is either from the roadside station Nagato Gorge or from the opposite Ryugufuchi. There are promenades throughout the area, and there is almost no difference in elevation, so there is nothing you can't do as long as you walk the distance. There is about one bus every two hours, but there is a return bus, so you can go back and forth, take the bus, or turn back midway. A tea shop on the way? restaurant? I was surprised that there was. It must be difficult to commute every day, and it's humbling to think about how supplies are transported. The promenade has places where only one person can pass, caves, and suspension bridges, so it's very varied, so you won't get bored while walking. Of course, you can enjoy the scenery, and there are 16 pools, so it's a good idea to walk and feel the differences between them. The most popular season is the time of autumn leaves, but the season of fresh greenery may also be a good time. However, the parking lot is not very large, so you should be prepared for traffic jams while waiting for the parking lot. By the way, the sunlight creates strong shadows, so it might be best to take photos early in the morning or around noon. The photos posted were taken between 9:00 and 12:00, so I hope you can use them as a reference. Ryufukuji Temple, originally established in 1206 by Ouchi Mitsumori, the 18th lord of the Ouchi clan, holds historical significance. The main hall, a representation of Muromachi period architecture, is an Important Cultural Property. The temple's grounds are believed to be remnants of the Ouchi clan residence and include a museum with valuable artifacts. The site also features stunning autumn foliage at the end of the season, creating a beautiful pathway to the shrine.

There's also a tatami-floored relaxing structure, and a wonderful footbath to feel the power of Yudaonsen onsen water. The Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum, established in 1912, offers a diverse collection including ancient pottery and archaeological works from regional ruins. Visitors can also admire fine arts on display. The museum frequently hosts rotating exhibitions, such as the recent showcase of Japanese paintings and an insightful Ghibli Park exhibition providing a behind-the-scenes look at animation creation.
To see our favorite art exhibition, we drove specifically here, although the journey was a bit long, it was well worth it. If you want to see the special exhibitions currently on display, it is wise to check the official website first. We really enjoy the exhibition setup and the museum shop here.

Nestled in the heart of Yamaguchi, "Yamaguchi City Saikoutei" is a charming venue that serves as a hub for local residents and visitors alike. This beautifully restored historic Japanese restaurant, known as Ryotei Saikoutei, exudes traditional Japanese ambiance and offers an opportunity to don a kimono. The facility boasts stunning autumn foliage visible from its hallways, creating a picturesque setting that enhances your visit.
Great. The Japanese archictecture, interior design, and garden make for an other worldly experience. I have a theory that all the rectangles or the rice straw mats, and interior sluding doors, and window frames are of a variety of sizes such that at times smaller rectangles are nearer and bigger rectangles are further away (the reverse of normal perspectival effect on size) such that it becomes difficult for the brain to process the interior as a cartesian space, leaving you with the unprocessed pure experience or a tiny glimpse of enlightenment. The garden is especially beatiful in autumn. The main large room costs 100 yen to enter.

I know what it looked like in the old days, so I'm glad it has been relocated and restored to its original state. The parking lot is large and can accommodate about 100 cars, including buses and taxis. The rooms are available for rent at a very reasonable price. It is also used for meetings and exhibitions. An admission fee of 100 yen is required for the main hall, but the plaques of past politicians that are preserved there are well worth seeing and are valuable. The staff in the office are all very polite, kind, and use proper language, so it is a pleasant experience. They give polite directions and answer any questions you may have politely. This teamwork is amazing. I think other facilities should follow this example. The admission fee is only 100 yen for the main hall, but perhaps they are able to operate because of subsidies from Yamaguchi City? I hope they will maintain the current system forever. As a user, I think it would be even better if there was a room or even a veranda with a "matcha seat" where you could have a coffee shop. Is that possible? I would like you to come up with some good ideas. Absolutely Amazing Onsen Experience I absolutely loved this place. It offers a wide variety of onsen baths—some with hydromassage jets, others with bubbling water, and even beautifully designed outdoor baths surrounded by stones that create a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. There’s also a wooden bucket hanging by a rope that you can pull to splash yourself with very cold water—such a refreshing contrast! They also have cold tubs to enhance the hot-cold effect, and outdoor resting areas where you can just relax and enjoy the moment. Inside, there’s a sauna and a steam room, both very well maintained. Everything is extremely clean and well-organized. I really appreciated how smoothly everything ran. As a foreigner, I didn’t face any issues at all. All the staff were kind, respectful, and helpful. Everyone was welcoming, as long as you are respectful and follow the rules—something very important in Japanese bath culture. I liked it so much that I became a member, and I’m planning to come back many more times. It’s the perfect place to relax, recharge, and disconnect from everything. Highly recommended!

They have a variety of bath, a pulse massage bath where theres a micro electic current dont know what thats for, outdoor baths, sauna, salt room and one bath from what i have understand is for opening up the pores i liked that. taking pictures is prohibited, you can also buy towels incase you dont have any. they provide shampoo and conditioner so you dont need to bring your own or if you just want to shower or bathe this is the perfect place to unwind.

It rained until early in the morning, and then drizzle and light rain continued to fall during the match. Only the main stand can provide shelter from the rain. There are seats in the back stands and on the side (behind the goal), but there is no roof, so you will get wet if you don't wear a raincoat. There is a parking lot next to the stadium, but there is a charge and the number of parking spaces is limited. It's not paved, and the entire parking lot was muddy from the rain that morning, and I saw many parked cars with muddy tires and muddy shoes. There was no other large parking lot, so nearby private houses were renting parking lots by the hour. Staguru was well stocked and there were quite a few food trucks (I didn't use them). I think it's good to have a good time getting to know the enemy's territory as it's our first away game. The stadium is a typical national athletics stadium, so it's not easy to see soccer, but it is clean and well-equipped with large video displays and individual seating. The roof covers about 70% of the stadium, with the main stand alone. I think most people come by car and many people use the parking lot in the park or the temporary parking lot, but public transportation is also convenient for a team in a regional city, and you can walk from Otoshi Station and Yawara Station on the Yamaguchi Line. Otoshi Station seems to be recommended, and although it says it's a 15-minute walk, I was able to walk there in about 10 minutes. There are only 1-2 trains per hour, so be sure to check the timetable. Please note that this is an unmanned station and transportation IC cards such as Suica and ICOCA cannot be used. There is also a shuttle bus from Shin-Yamaguchi Station on the way there at 00 minutes and 30 minutes past the hour. This costs 400 yen, and the train costs 210 yen from Shin-Yamaguchi, so it's a bit expensive, but there are many trains and they go close to the stadium, so you can get there comfortably. There are also local buses from the Yuda Onsen area, but there aren't many, so be sure to check the timetable. There are cheerleaders at the stadium, so there's plenty to enjoy besides football, and I think the stadium gourmet food truck is one of the largest in J2. It was more accessible and well-run than I expected, so I was able to watch the game in comfort. The flora and fauna and historical exhibits are interesting even especially to adults. Our 6 year old child has been going 2 to 3 times a month. Free to children under 18 and those over 70. 150 yen for other adults. Toilets and air conditioning. Close to other facilities: library, art gallery, ethno-museum, archeological museum, and prefectural capital with exhibits and viewing platform.

(Translated by Google) I visited in early July 2025. The admission fee was not cashless. The special exhibition was in preparation, so only the permanent exhibition was available. The first floor had robot and industry-related exhibits, and there were robot programming, drawing, and programs where robots assemble toy robots, which were very popular with children. The next floor was archaeology, with specimens of Yamaguchi Prefecture's strata and dinosaurs. (No hands-on content here) The next floor had exhibits on nature, with stuffed animals, plants, and insects from our daily lives. (No hands-on content here either) Next was the space exhibit, with a large model of the solar system. This was similar to Solar in Hofu. (The model can be turned with a switch) Finally, there was a floor of great people from Yamaguchi Prefecture (Shoin Shrine-related), but this will not be of interest to anyone other than children who like history. I stayed there for about 40 minutes. (For me) there isn't any special content, so I don't think it's worth taking the time to visit. Inside the museum, you can experience driving a train, which the children were fascinated by. We visited on a Sunday, but there were not many people, so we were able to have the museum almost to ourselves and enjoy our tour comfortably. The dinosaur section in particular was impressive, and both adults and children could enjoy the exhibits. It's a place I would definitely like to visit again. I used to pass by this spot every day, but never actually walked up to it — mostly because you either have to take a long detour or climb a pretty steep set of stairs to get there (If you're up for the stairs as a bit of a workout, it’s definitely worth a visit.😅) At night, the soft glow from the lanterns mixed with the pink cherry blossoms creates such a calm and romantic atmosphere. Perfect for an evening walk if you’re in the mood for a little peaceful escape.

Yamaguchi Daijingu Shrine, established in 1520 by the Ouchi clan, served as a place to enshrine the spirits of Ise Kotai Shrine. The shrine's construction imitates that of Ise Jingu and is often referred to as 'Ise-san of the west' due to its resemblance to Ise Grand Shrine. It exudes a solemn and historic atmosphere, with the Isuzu River flowing through it.
You can see what you can't see at the real Ise Shrine Only the emperor and his family are allowed into the shrine precinct at the real Ise Shrine but you can see scaled down version (perhaps 1/4 size?) at this model Ise Shrine. You can also climb the adjacent Kounomine mountain for a great view if the city if you are fit -- it takes about 30 mins each way.

Very important Japanese Shrine (Branch of the Ise-Jingu), very calm atmosphere to pay respect to the Kami. Next to the shrine is an entrance „登山口“ to climb up the mountain. But the way is very steep and not easy. If you are not fit and don’t have good shoes, try to approach from the road on the other side of the mountain.

Yamaguchi Daijingu known as the “Ise Shrine of the West,” it was built as a replica of the famous Ise Grand Shrine. The shrine is beautifully maintained, with traditional architecture that blends harmoniously with the surrounding nature. Walking through the torii gates and into the serene shrine grounds provides a calming atmosphere, making it a great place for quiet reflection. Unlike more crowded and tourist-heavy shrines, Yamaguchi Daijingu has a more intimate and spiritual feel. While not as well-known as other major shrines in Japan, it holds historical and cultural significance for the region.

(Translated by Google) This is an Ise Grand Shrine officially recognized by both the Grand Shrine of Ise and the Yamato Imperial Court. There are Ise shrines all over the country, but this one is in a class of its own, an incredible shrine that could be said to have almost the same existence as the original Ise Grand Shrine. Calling it a mini-Ise is probably the easiest way to describe it. So, at the original Ise Grand Shrine in Mie, the main shrine is normally off-limits to anyone except priests, but at Yamaguchi Daijingu you can see it right in front of you. Another interesting sight that differs from the original Ise is that the Outer Shrine and Inner Shrine are enshrined side by side, one in front and one behind. Another unique sight is the site blatantly prepared next to the main shrine. Another clear difference from the original Ise is the presence of many Inari shrines (Uga Shrines) nearby, including within the grounds. Officially, they are treated as subsidiary shrines, but it's interesting to see how Inari is enshrined on such a large scale that it seems as if it is the main attraction. According to the priest, it has no relation to the white foxes like the Yuta (fox) found at JR Yuda Onsen Station, but it may be one of the reasons foxes are so popular in Yamaguchi City. [Warning!!] Diagonally behind Taga Shrine, Inari Shrine (moderately damaged) sits alongside a huge rock. The approach to the summit beyond that is currently extremely narrow in many places, making it dangerous enough to risk falling to your death, so caution is advised. [About the name "Daijingu"] Originally, Ise Grand Shrine was also called "Ise Grand Shrine," but at some point the character "Dai" was dropped from the official name. In that sense, Yamaguchi Daijingu possesses more "Ise Grand Shrine-like" elements than the original Ise Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture. 【Warning!!】

Occasionally, on a wintry day with flickering light snow, the cold peony proudly displayed its vibrant blossoms in the main hall of Ryuzoji Buddhist temple. While traditionally known for blooming between late December and late February, this was undeniably the perfect moment to witness its magnificence. Diverse hues adorned these large flowers, accentuating their beauty amidst the cool and solemn atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) I visited the shrine on the morning of January 18, 2025. There was an article about Kanpeony in the morning paper that day... It seems that potted plants are blooming inside the main hall, rather than being planted outdoors. I decided to give it a try and started driving 80km one way. I followed the delivery vehicle down a narrow road that seemed safe near the temple, and soon arrived at the parking lot. There was also a temporary parking lot, so there seemed to be quite a lot of cars parked there. There is a guide map at the entrance of the temple. Ahead, you will be greeted by the Seven Gods of Good Luck, and proceed to the tower gate with the hand-washing area and bell tower on your left. Pay the admission fee here and you will see the main hall on your right. Leaving the main hall behind and going further up the stairs, you will see Kannondo, and in front of it is a large ginkgo tree... I've seen giant ginkgo trees all over the place, but they looked so impressive that I wanted to see them when they change color. Beyond that is Tsuzumi Falls, the water level is low probably due to the winter, and there is a Buddha statue in the middle of the waterfall... The silence of winter is spreading. If you go down a little to your right, you will see Daisei Aofudo Myoo with an angry expression on his face... After visiting Goma-do Hall, winter peonies welcome you to the main hall where winter peonies are displayed, which is your purpose for today. The colorful and soft petals create an atmosphere that cannot be found in open fields. Peonies stand out against the gold folding screen. There was also a funny doll sitting in the back. I took my time to enjoy the scenery and headed back home, thinking that I would like to visit during the open-air peonies season in spring and the autumn leaves season. At the end of the Edo period, the Bandai family supported the retainers of the Choshu clan, and it is said that Katsura Kogoro, Takasugi Shinsaku, Kusaka Genzui, Shufu Masanosuke, Inoue Kaoru, Ito Hirobumi, and others used this place. The Choshu feudal retainers stayed at Juho-tei, the oldest of the three remaining historical buildings of the Bandai family at the end of the Edo period. The ``Sugijuku'' that stands next to it is where the older brother of Shoin Yoshida, who ran the Matsushita Village School, ran a private school in the early Meiji period, and the second floor was apparently used for various secret discussions by the patriots. Between ``Juho-tei'' and ``Sugi-juku,'' there is a pot garden that seems to date back to that time. Although the tree has grown too much, it still maintains its beauty without compromising its balance with the stone lantern and washbasin. At the back of ``Sugijuku'' is ``Bandai Ianushiya''. This main building was originally built as a tea room for the Bandai family, and the garden is thought to have been a simple open-air garden at that time. However, the building was later renovated as the Bandai House. At that time, the dry pond and snow lanterns were probably added to the main garden, and today it is a lively garden with many scenic spots. There are many stepping stones in the garden, and you can walk around it, but it is more of an appreciation garden. It is set up so that it is very pleasing to the eye when walking along the wet veranda facing the garden. When looking through the snow-covered shoji screens of the guest room, which also serves as a tea room, the garden is extremely elegant and presents the most beautiful scenery. On the opposite side of this garden and the building is a small garden that enshrines a shrine to the local deity, and the shrine here is also beautiful. When this ``Bandai Head House'' was opened as a museum, it was restored and regained its charm as a tea room, and the charm of an orthodox sukiya can be seen everywhere. Structurally, it is interesting that the corridors are like secret loopholes, which may have been a device to help patriots escape from pursuers at the end of the Edo period. It's a fun building to imagine.

Thank you. You can take off your shoes before entering the building, and it's free if you just want to look at the building. That's surprising!! ︎The museum costs 200 yen, but it has projection mapping, calligraphy by the patriots at the end of the Edo period, and paintings from the original period, which are treasures passed down from the wealthy merchant Bandai family. Although it is a little far from the tourist center, it is a wonderful facility that is well worth a visit. Recommended! "枕流亭," a relocated building with a rich history, has been frequented by influential figures. In 1867, it was the site of secret meetings involving Ryoma Sakamoto and other key figures who laid the groundwork for modern Japan. This small yet historically significant building was once used for clandestine gatherings by Kido Takayoshi and Saigo Takamori in their efforts to overthrow the Shogunate.

On the first floor, there are panel displays of people related to Satsuma and Choshu, and the second floor has been preserved as it was used at the time. Kido Shrine is a place of great historical significance, dedicated to Kido Takamasa, one of the key figures in the Meiji Restoration. Like Sakamoto, Katsura's wisdom and true strength can be seen in the fact that he was a skilled fighter but did not engage in pointless fights✨ And it's surprising that someone who was active in modern history, such as the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period, is enshrined as a deity, although it may have been the case in the distant past😲 I thought he must have been a person who made considerable contributions and was well-liked in his hometown. Konomine Castle Ruins, also known as Takamine Castle, offers a glimpse into Japan's feudal history. The castle was built by Lord Yoshinaga, the 32nd head of the Ouchi clan. Visitors can explore the tower and view displays of Japanese swords and armor. Climbing up from the observatory side reveals large Horikiri and ridged vertical moats. The main enclosure is surrounded by stone walls with tiered structures.
There did not used to be a view from the top. Now there is a great view. It took 20 minutes for my 87 year old father in law to get to the top from Yamaguchi Daijinguu Shrine. There is a road to the summit from Mt. Ododoi / Kido Park.

(Translated by Google) (2025.4.11) Top 100 Famous Cities No.174. I got the seal from the History and Folklore Museum. The seal depicts a view of the Ouchi Building from an aerial perspective, which is not available. What if you feel that your visit to the Ouchi Museum is not satisfying enough and you feel like you didn’t see anything in this numbered city? Then we must also include the Gaoling Castle ruins in the siege plan. There seem to be two routes to attack Gaoling Castle. One is the popular route that goes up from the asphalt road next to Kido Park, which is a long and slow route up. The other one seems to be at the trailhead behind Yamaguchi Daijingu Shrine? But the conditions of the route seemed unknown, and it was difficult to find information on the Internet, so it was not easy to do homework and estimate the itinerary in advance. So I started from the asphalt trail entrance next to Kido Park and pushed the rented buggy up. As we go up the road, it becomes smaller and smaller, with some open and beautiful views. After arriving at the base station platform and parking the car, you still need to walk a short distance deeper into the forest to reach the city ruins. The castle ruins are structured on multiple platforms, with some remaining building foundations, and the stone wall you see at the end is quite large. Look at the stone wall intertwined with the roots of the trees, the old buildings have been taken back by nature, and the sense of ruins is impressive. Finally, I'd like to share my time record. It took me 40 minutes to push my bike from the trailhead to the parking platform of the base station above. I stayed in the city ruins for 40 minutes, and then it took me less than 15 minutes to slide down from the top with the bike, which saved me a lot of time. However, some sections of the road are in poor condition and the downhill speed is very fast. If you feel it is dangerous and you cannot stop, you will still get off and lead the way. The path from the parking lot is a complete mountain trail, but with the exception of a few sections, the path is wide enough to make it easy to walk. From the summit, there is a view to the east, overlooking the Yamaguchi Basin. It is said that when the Ouchi clan built the castle around 1550, there were no trees at the top of the mountain and it was possible to see a 360 degree view. It was built with livability in mind, and each wall is large. After the Mori clan destroyed the Ouchi clan, the castle was renovated, but only a portion of it remained, so its name remains as the site of the castle built by the Ouchi clan. The castle was abandoned around 1630 under the One Country One Castle Law. The road from Route 9 is very narrow and there are no guardrails, so it is very difficult to pass each other, so we recommend using a small vehicle or smaller. There is also an information board at the highest point of this group, and there is a radio tower next to it. If you go up the promenade of several steps from the side of the radio tower, you will come to a wide curve in the center of the castle area. A stone wall has been built around the main enclosure, with one on the south side similar to the one built by the Mori clan, one on the north side being the largest, and some on the west side as well. On the north side of the main enclosure, there are about 10 steps of well-planed continuous kuruwa. There is a Horikiri to the northwest of the main enclosure. On the west side of the main enclosure, there are several small kuruwa and a large kuruwa. If you descend to the southwest of the central curve, you will find the castle's largest (continuous) moat, with a ridged vertical moat. Afterwards, Xavier left Yamaguchi in the care of his fellow missionaries, but Yoshitaka gave permission to the remaining Father Torres to rebuild, making it the first Christian church in Japan, and the first Christmas (Nativity Mass) in Japan was held here.

(Translated by Google) "The birthplace of Christmas in Japan" "The site of Daidoji Temple where Francisco Xavier stayed" It is said that when Xavier returned from Kyoto and carried out missionary activities in Yamaguchi, he built a park on the site of Daidoji Temple, where he stayed as a base for his activities. The predecessor of the current Yamaguchi Church, it can be said to be the birthplace of Christianity in Yamaguchi. It is also said to be the place where Xavier's colleague Father Torres celebrated Christmas with the Japanese for the first time. Therefore, it can be said to be the birthplace of Christmas for the Japanese people. In the center stands a huge stone tower with a cross. Although it is a park, it has a different atmosphere than a children's playground. I visited at dusk, so please forgive me if the photos look a little lonely. Although the site is small, there are many trees. Although none of them can be called giant trees, they are magnificent. The recommended time to visit the park is spring, as there are several fine old cherry trees. There is a monument diagonally opposite the entrance, and it is very large and impressive compared to the site area. It is said that in the past, this is where the missionary Xavier's residence (Daidoji) was located, which was given permission by Yoshitaka Ouchi, the shugo daimyo of Yamaguchi, which boasted great power in western Japan. Although you can't feel any vestiges of the past, monuments and Yoshitaka Ouchi's letter of approval still tell us about the past. Since it is not a major tourist destination, there may not be anything worth seeing, so it is not recommended for tourists from far away. Recommended for individuals and small groups who love history.

We need to spread this historical fact more. . . . In Yamaguchi, they say "Xavier", which is similar to the Spanish pronunciation, instead of "Xavier". At the back of the park, there is a monument with ``Ouchi Yoshinaga's letter of approval''.
