Great place to stop and get some kakikore (shaved ice), super fresh local vegetables and something to eat. Walk around the area. Nice thing. It's a really interesting essential oils factory shop. Also, lots of really Japanese restaurants, omiyage stores and ramen shops. Beautiful place. Don't forget to get a photo with the dinosaur made with the rice stems!
Very cute little street lined with small flowery canals. The design of the street is very uncommon and unlikely in Japan: the street is large, and there are no electric wires to be seen around. People living in the neighborhood are very careful about the environment and it shows.
Traditions Quite village. I went with the last bus from train station (15.45 ) so need to walked 2 km to another village for bus back to JR station Take taxi 5000 yen from station to village
A parking center of Takuminosato area. Well equipped with a shop and with a nice and clean toilet inside the shop. We visit here to go to Strawberry farm which offers 30 mins all you can eat fresh from tree Strawberry picking.
Nice place to stop over for some quick bites and souvenirs.
There are a lot of things to look at and if you want to be an artisan it is a good place to visit...
a large selection of varieties of apples, plucking from the tree. many apples for every taste

A grueling but highly rewarding winter hike with spectacular views. Winter hike not advised for beginners. Cramp ons, ice axe required, ski poles highly recommended.
Great experience. On a clear day you can see many distant mountains. Wish I had come better prepared for a little hike but there was so much snow.
Hidden gem in Japan. Very nice and beautiful for a one day trip. Can go by using the Tokyo wide pass.
I came here on 10/21/23 to take photo of mountain Koyo. Because is not clear blue sky day I was lucky to see rainbow. The experience of sitting at cable car alone with colourful autumn leaves around was absolutely amazing !! Then rainbow did a magic touch to the whole landscape !! You can buy set ticket to go up to the top cost 3500yen including cable car and a lift . I was advice not to take lift since it is raining . At the 1319m top I saw many hikers , they told me 4 hours to hike to the top. My ticket cost 2000yen round trip . I should come back in summer to do the hike . If you like colourful autumn leaves 🍁 it is highly recommended. Only 2 hours from tokyo station, easy to do a day trip .
so many snow and freezing cold. but beautiful view
Essentially the ropeway bought and operated by Hoshino Resorts. Everything was fine but there’s no “wow effect” that we’re accustomed to with Hoshino group experiences, basically just a mountain ropeway with a few not so well maintained trails at the summit. Great to escape the tokyo heat though !
The toilet is Clean! The ropeway is huge and comfortable although a little bit hot in summer 👍
I came here in the early 2000s. The differences were the uniforms, politeness, and prices.

This place is cool! Between the ropeway and the excellent high up terrain and the super long run to take you back down to the base. The people that work here are very friendly and exceptionally helpful. I unfortunately got myself stuck at this resort because I drove my camper van on the road past the ropeway station. I thought it was the road to the upper parking lot and I was very wrong. I ended up on an ice covered road with zero traction. I had to get chains for my awd camper with six snow tires. The road was so ice covered that the bulldozer that plows it lost control on the way down and almost crushed my van. See the picture with the snow piled up in front of the van. That's how close it came to crushing the van. No damage done but it took me a long while to dig out. Thankfully, I was able to get chains delivered to the resort via Amazon with help from the resort workers. This is obviously on me as I drove the van. But in my defense I watched numerous cars try this same road because it looks like a plowed road. One was a convertible that had to get dragged out by JAF. There is no signage to indicate this road is actually a closed summer only road and is plowed so well in the beginning it looks like that isn't the case. The resort would be doing it's guests a huge courtesy to mark the road closed in some way. I ended up spending 2 nights and 3 days stuck. Granted it was a peaceful place to be overnight. Also be careful here because they actually close the entire resort to the public two days a week. Which was a total bummer because the morning I got the van out was an amazing bluebird day with tons of fresh snow the public could not access. The 9000 yen price for a lift is really really high. It's more than Lotte Arai.
Fantastic place to visit in the winter. Weather you love ski or just to observe snow covered mountains, this is a perfect place
Formerly known as Tanigawadake Tenjindaira, the ski resort was renamed and rebranded as Mt.T after Hoshino Resorts took over the place. The lift price is one of the highest on mainland Japan, about 9000 JPY for one day for the winter season 24/25. It was less than 5000 JPY in the past. Ski Resort Layout: The ski resort is served by a main gondola from the base to the top and a couple of chairlifts to the upper slopes of varying degrees of difficulty. There is one very long run down to the base that ends at the road leading up to the gondola. Much of the appeal of Mt. T is its side country within the resort and backcountry to the top. Snow: The resort is known for its heavy amount of snowfall it receives and stashes of powder snow could be found in both sidecountry and backcountry terrain. On days with heavy snowfall, expect the chairlifts or even the gondola to be closed due to avalanche risks. Faciltiies: There isn't much facilities around for a Hoshino resort or in comparison to other resorts in the area. There is a day lodge area with an eatery and a base area with a shop and rest area with rental services. That's about it. The resort does try to carry out seasonal campaigns such as snow play or have special gondola cars with dining in it. The resort is popular among people looking for backcountry terrain as well as hikers even in winter. The Hoshino branding also draws more tourists to the resort. However, it is still relatively uncrowded, partly because of the lift prices, compared to Gala Yuzawa or Kandatsu on a holiday or weekend. The resort can be fun place to visit after a fresh snow day with good weather and the view of Tanigawadake is quite impressive. It is also a different creature from the other ski resorts in the area which makes it a nice change of environment.
This mountain is great for a hike and easily accessible via a large gondola. The hiking path is well-marked and maintained, attracting plenty of hikers. However, the trail is quite challenging, often requiring near-climbing efforts. Near the gondola, there's a pleasant area with a very slow lift. Both the gondola and lift operate at a very slow speed, which might be a safety concern.
It’s easy riding the Ropeway and the Lift to get to the top of Tenjin Daira, even after the snow melt in April and probably summer and the fall, until the Snow Ground restart in winter again!!
Visited in the middle of September, 2018. It was cold up there! Even raining slightly although the weather forecast said sunny all day. Cost around US$20 two ways, so not so cheap. Parking costs $5 but in the secure building where you buy tickets and find shops, cafes, restaurants and rest rooms. Be prepared for the inclement weather if you stay outside for 10 mins. For hikers and climbers, there are coin lockers, toilets, restaurants, even rooms for change clothing near the rope way station up there. Note that under severe conditions even in May or September, sometimes fatal accident happens every single year here. Listen local guides carefully and read blogs/guidelines by experienced Japanese climber or so.
On one hand, it is beautiful nature, But on the other, it is a hard and unsafe climb in which you can easily slip off the path with no sagety bars as protection. When it is rainy and windy, that is even more dangerous
Good views from the top of the Rodeway. Cold in winter!

Lovely place with a ton of made-by-glass things along the streets. Recommend to visit the glass museum and a day tour/work shop to make glass by yourself. Eventhough, the price of products is quite expensive, it worths for buying some small souvenirs
Definitely worth a stop if you are in Minakami. The man at the information counter was very friendly. I purchased a glass wind chime as a souvenir, and the salesclerk boxed it up all nice.
Amazing place where you can experience glass blowing and decorating glass housewares. I made a tumbler in only 20 ish minutes. A great afternoon activity with adults or kids, the museum and shop are also great, a must visit if you are in the area
Lovely place Beautiful nature Eyecathing architecture...👌
A very nice glasses factory with a nice souvenir shop and restaurant. Far from the high speed rail station. But it has free shuttle bus service.
Had the most wonderful fun here. Truly enjoyed learn and making my own blown glass item. A true experience I'll never forget.
The glass museum was good. Kids love the cute glassware on display. You can make glass cups as well.

Train station

Slide 1 of 8
The deepest train station in Japan. We stopped here on our way to the nearby Hoshino owned ropeway. You have to climb down 486 steps to get to the platform for the trains, and there are chairs on the way for you to take a break. It seems like they've set aside some space on the left for an escalator, but I guess it never got past the planning stages.
Interesting train station with 462 steps! You can take a slow climbing of stairs and explore this unique station.
I took the train from Doai Station, famous for its deep underground platform and long staircases. Walking through the dimly lit tunnels and countless steps was quite an adventure. The station also has a special beer aging project, making it a unique spot for both train enthusiasts and travelers.
The deepest station in Japan, with 462 steps to reach the surface, and about 100m with about 30 steps to reach the entrance. All the steps are numbered with every 10 steps, the top is 462, you can see it on the left side. It takes about 10 minutes to climb up all these steps, so give a plenty of time or you’ll miss the train. There is no officer in this station. Moreover, the underground way is from Minakami station (Gunma) to Nagaoka station (Niigata). The way back from Nagaoka to Minakami is the platform on surface. Please beware of that or else you’ll miss the train and have to wait a long time for the next train, sometimes it’ll be nearly 3 hours between 2 trains. Please look the instructions carefully! There is no elevator or escalator in this station. Climbing up with heavy luggage is quite a pain. There are few wooden chairs in the middle for you to have a rest. There is a bus stop in front of the station.
I went there in August of 2023. I took a bus to Echigo Yuzawa and rode the local Jōetsu train south from there. The southbound platform is up on the surface and looks like your typical train station out in the boonies of Japan, but a journey of 486 steps into the depths of the mountain takes you down to the northbound platform. No matter how roasting hot it is up top, it’s chilly down there, and how glad I was that I brought a long-sleever and long sweatpants with me in my backpack. My feet were actually getting cold as well. Let me also warn you that the restroom down there is now closed. When nature called, I had to march back up all 486 up to the station building. (That restroom is open, thankfully.) There was still the waiting room downstairs, but all the “I was here” messages had been removed. There seem to be serious water issues in that room as well, since the ceiling was dripping wet. Speaking of which, while waiting on the platform, the conductor overhead was dripping water on me. The trains also don’t come very frequently. When the train finally came into view, however, it appeared as two tiny points of light far off in the distance. It looked almost eerie, though I knew it was a pair of headlamps. Were I to go back, I think I’d take the Shinkansen up to Echigo Yuzawa, as it’s not that much more expensive than the bus, and you don’t have to arrange weeks in advance.
I kind of missed the sign at the top of the stairs (not too fluent in Kanji yet) so I thought I had to get down again to get back to Minakami but the way back was the track on the surface. Missed the train and would be happy about a small translation at the sign at the top of the stairs before going down! Otherwise cool stop while it's hot outside and the cafe in the conductors office was nice
This old and spooky train station (on the Jōetsu JR train line) is fun and well deserved a visit. The platform for northbound (to Echigo-Yuzawa/Nagaoka) is 70m/230ft deep, ten mins to walk the 486 steps to the ticket gate. Hence carrying up luggages is not an easy task let alone the eerie.
By far the most unique railway station I’ve visited anywhere in the world. I arrived from Minakami so had to slog up the 486 steps to reach the surface. The cafe in the former ticket office is rather pricey but great for grabbing a bite while waiting for the train (services are pretty infrequent).

I visited this ski resort with my fiancée in January 2025. As a beginner in snowboarding, I found this ski resort to be very beginner-friendly with great views and not too crowded. You can rent a full set of equipment at the rental store. There are two "green" tracks which are suitable for beginners to learn skiing or snowboarding. However, the location is not very convenient, so it's better to come here by private car.
Luckily there was a snowfall & snow quality is good at the top. Good for the snowboarding. Comparatively cheaper than nearby ski resorts. Snow tires or chain is recommended.
It's a simple and relatively affordable ski resort. There is something for everyone here. One word of caution, if you are somewhere in between beginner and intermediate level of skiing. Course no. 10 that starts from the very top has an expert level slope at start. So ride the no. 9 lift only if you are confident enough about your technique. If you are sure, then it's a nice place up top, as views from up top are mesmerizing, and so are the slopes.
Excellent place of all type skiers and skaters. Restaurant had many options. Many ski courses with different steep angles ate there. 8.00 to 4.00 pm. Time just flies
A place to snow gazing, ski and snowboarding that is affordable to catch if you live near or in Tokyo. It has several choices of tracks ranging from beginner to advance. They also provide rental gear and a food court with many food and beverages, and some souvenirs too.
Powder is great here when it snows, even with just 10cm. The lifts are kind of slow but they are long. Tickets are relatively cheap for the minakami area. Getting to the resort takes around 40 min from the highway on winding roads, but the facilities are good so there’s no need to move around.
Went here last April 2, totally had fun. Prices are very reasonable, it'll be even cheaper if you go in a group of 10. Staff is very helpful and friendly (one literally ran around looking for the English ski instructor for us, even if we already missed the 1pm class), and cafeteria food is good and reasonably priced. There's a restaurant supposedly, but it was closed so we didn't get to see it. It's a ski park so don't expect lodgings. Also, it's very bare bones, yet very comfy. Shuttle is available up to the nearest bus stop only, and nothing directly to Jomukogen or Minakami Station.
Easy rental process and great powder snow. Awesome place to learn. Has some harder runs we did not try but look great.

Super dinner, serviced by Keigo. Amazing service, smiling, excellent English, Keigo was amazing. And... He's also a photographer. We took the hamburger with the sausage and rice and salad. Excellent food, big portions. All in all, highly recommend.
Really good food. In a small town that doesn't stay open late so make sure you get there early enough to order and eat. Top picture is Tempura Udon noodles and the bottom is Beef curry set.
Fantastic udon and catsu 😋😍 very popular restaurant , very friendly service and great coffee ☕ 😁 would recommend a lunch break here 😀 lots of parking , some mountain views 😉😁
Creative twist on some Classical Japanese dishes was nice, no English and menus not easy to understand but one staff spoke a little English to help us order and plenty of parking
Great family restaurant, good selection of food and great quality. Thank you Keigo-san for the great service!

Not too crowded and easy access by train and shuttle bus from Tokyo station. Need to reserve a shuttle bus seat though ahead of time
Relatively small local ski resort in Minakami. It’s very humble overall, but they have pretty much everything you’d need from a ski resort. The courses are pretty straightforward and relatively towards experts level. There is not much variety there, compared to other well known places. While the courses are small, they have pretty big food courts and cafes. There are also souvenir/gear shops. Rentals and schools are available. There is a shuttle bus from Minakami station.
A very nice ski resort located in 2 hours derive from Tokyo. Pretty cool courses including for both beginners and pro ski and snowboard lovers! Not so far from the toll road and easy access. Several car parking lots located at a walk distance and isolated as well. All isolated parking lots providing a free shuttle bus. Better to go there as early as possible to avoid shuttle bus in order to have an easy and quick access from the closes parking. Very comfortable facility includes wide eating area and several restaurants inside and outside the building. Rental shops could allow you to get and ride at the same day all you need including wears and ski or boards. For those with kids, there is kids school facility with a very kids friendly instructors. Will allow you to get your kids attended to school and enjoy your free time for adult riding. Nice weather, good mood and friendly staff are always there! Recommended very much!
It’s basically a ski resort but we visited during spring. so my review is based on spring time view and facilities of this place. View is absolutely stunning during daffodil festival and facilities are ok. The only thing that bothers me is the long queue in ground floor restaurant, may be for golden week’s rush but they can manage it easily if they had enough stuffs. only two elderly person tried their best.
It’s a great ski resort which is 2hr drive from Tokyo. They also have shuttle bus service from Minakami station. Advance course is nice 👍🏼 Resort rental options costs are 4500¥ for ski/snowboard, 4500¥ lifts on weekends.
We love the snowpark soo much! It has tubing, snow cycle, sledge for kids and adult. The price is 2000yen for a person for all activities. You can rent shoes too for 1000yen. The park worker also provide a treasure hunt activity so it was so much fun for the kids. We never find any other prk as interesting as this for our kids. The staff are friendly too. We love it soo much will definitwly come again! They open at 9 and close at 16:00
A great trip!!! I rented a snowboard for 3800 yen / 5 hours. It will snow in the morning, and in the afternoon it will be warm. I read the comments here and followed the instructions. Thank you for sharing!
Quite small but modern ski area with four tracks and a snow park. Works till midnight, buy Nighter skipass from 17 to 24 hours and enjoy riding at night. Two restaurants with moderate selection of food. Equipment is well maintained.

It's a great place for the Ski Lovers. There are also places for kids to enjoy activities with ice.
It's was a great experience. You can ski, snowboard and just play in the snow.
Many ski activity to do. Have a lot of fun
My first time join at the Labyrinth 🍀 It’s amazing
(Translated by Google) This resort is suitable for intermediate and beginner skiers. The slope is bowl-shaped, so it's small enough that you can see the whole thing from the base. The layout suggests that 70% of the skiers are elementary school students, and there are many schools, so it's recommended for beginners. There's a steep slope on the far left side, so advanced skiers can ski a little further. There's also a powder zone on the right side of the course, but it's deep, so beginners shouldn't go unless they know how to get out. The course starts at 08:30 and payment is cash only, but lift tickets are cheap. There are snow melting pipes from Minakami to the pass, so there's no need to worry about freezing. Based on prior reviews, we went fully equipped, but the pass is gentle and frequently cleared, so if you have a 4WD, you rarely need to use chains. For 2WD, it depends on your experience; locals and delivery workers didn't use them, but it's safer for inexperienced drivers to use chains before entering the pass. Even if you get stuck after climbing a certain distance, there's nowhere to turn them, and turning them on the snow surface requires experience. Lazy skiing can be costly and time-consuming, so it's best to take action early.

(Translated by Google) I always come here during the autumn leaves season. In 2023, the leaves will turn autumn later than last year. However, by October 14th, it was at its peak. Tourist buses cannot come in here! So...it's a little-known spot filled with people who enjoy the autumn leaves on their own! There is no parking lot! Although it will be parked on the road, it is a little-known spot for people who don't like being known and crowded. I would like you to be aware of the length of your stay (exclusive parking time) and compromise with each other to take photos! m(_ _)m (Original)

(Translated by Google) When I came here a few years ago, I was impressed by the peak of the autumn leaves, where the sunlight filtering through the trees was sparkling and golden, and the name "Teruha" lived up to its name, but when I visited on November 2nd this year, I visited just before the end of the autumn leaves and the sun was setting, so it felt lonely. Still, the mountain stream wrapped in red fallen leaves was beautiful and I felt that ``Kanto's Oirase'' was not just an imitation. Perfect place to fill your stomach after a day hike. The set meal cost 950-1600 yen It's quite expensive but taste good. 😋
A gem! The service was friendly and food was delicious. Great portions too. The staff seemed amused that we came 3 days in a row but I would go the whole week if I was staying that long.
The best dorayaki I’ve ever had in my life. Has frozen whipped cream inside. I went back for seconds. Gift shop inside for omiyage after hiking Tanigawadake.
This is a fairly large restaurant and gift shop not far from the base of the ropeway. The restaurant is only open for lunch, and I had a steak lunch which was quite satisfying. If you're getting an early start on Mt. Tanigawa, You might be done hiking in the early afternoon, in which case this is a natural place to grab some food before you leave for other pastures. The staff here are also caretakers for the campground just up the hill.
Super friendly and good coffee.

Nice little private museum to check out if you’re already in the area. Three small galleries housing Japanese painting, ceramics, and some Western art including Rodin, Renault and Matisse. The modern architecture is very interesting and it’s a very calm and clean space. No photos are allowed inside. They serve you tea and chocolates after your visit which was a nice touch.

(Translated by Google) There was a pamphlet with discount coupons available at the information center of Meikumo Castle Ruins, and I visited there because I was interested in Ryusei Kishida's painting (Reiko statue). (By the way, if you don't have a discount coupon, it seems that your JAF membership card will also give you a discount.) Now, the artworks in the collection are all by Ryusei Kishida, as well as famous domestic and international painters and sculptors, and we, the common people, can't imagine how much personal wealth the founder invested in collecting them. However, I am grateful to be able to see them for a small fee. Also, we visited during the holidays, but after a group of people left to replace us, the museum was reserved for private use, so we were able to enjoy the museum at our leisure. After the viewing, we were treated to herbal tea and simple sweets in the lobby. After enjoying the lingering feeling for a while in a quiet environment surrounded by nature, I left the museum. By the way, if you follow the route to this location, the navigation will take you to the parking lot under the stairs on the south side of the building, but if you want to use the disabled parking space in front of the building's main entrance, you should take the road on the north side. It seems like I should just go around. The facility was also equipped for wheelchair access. The stairs split into two in the middle, and the other one was a staircase leading to Sengen Shrine. Museum Noya itself is very stylish. I get the impression that nothing is wasted. This is a beautiful dam with spectacular views, even during low water level periods. I visited during the summer of 2016. Good for the whole family. I'd like to go again when the water levels are higher. Minakami is a beautiful area anyway with lots of lush, green trees and lots of hot springs. The drive to the dam is gorgeous too. If I were driving, I would have stopped many times to take pictures.
Beautiful and not crowded, you can enjoy autumn leaf as much as you want
There are a lot of dam sites to visit in Japan and they are all quite similar but if you get to the top of this dam site, there is a shop, a museum, and some lovely views. I have been more than once with my family as it is a nice little drive from our place.
(Translated by Google) It is convenient to go both above and below the dam by car. Proceed along the mountain road toward Naramata Dam, and when you turn a curve, you will come to a place where you can look up at the dam. After turning left and crossing the bridge, there was space for several cars to park. As you approach the dam on foot, the scale of the rockfill dam is impressive. It looks like you can take the stairs to the top of the dam, but if you drive about 4km you will reach the top of the dam. You can walk on the dam embankment. Unfortunately, since we arrived late, the museum was closed.
