For only 200 yen, you can visit the inside of this beautiful original castle (one of only twelve left)! It comes with a free staircase workout in the park to make it to the top plus inside to climb to the top level. Also, I loved my interaction with the lovely old man at the counter. Also, don't forget to get two of the five stamps here for your free Uwajima post card!
A famous 100 castles that are easily accessible from Uwajima City. After enjoying the famous Uwajima sea bream rice, slowly climb up to the castle tower. The view is good, and although the exterior is small, it is a magnificent wooden castle tower with a main pillar. There is also a castle town, so it's nice to walk around. I was lucky because I also included the oldest turret (south turret).
The Uwajima castle is one of the few original castles in Japan. Smaller than other castles on Shikoku but it's one of the nicest looking castles I've seen. For only 200 yen you can enter the castle and get a great view of Uwajima town.
A truly beautiful castle with a phenomenal view to go with it. The hordes of tourists in Honshu sleeping on Shikoku. Absolutely loved seeing this gorgeous castle with only a handful of other lucky tourists. The 360 view of the city is stunning.
Beautiful castle on top of a hill with excellent views. If you want to enter the building, there’s a small fee. There’s also an easy parking lot by the visitor center at one of the entrances where the trail to the castle starts. It’s maybe 1 km hike to the top. There’s a gentle walking trail for most of the way but once you get close to the top, there are a lot of steep stairs with uneven rocks. So be prepared for a good workout and don’t attempt if you have mobility issues.
Absolutely amazing castle. Seems small on the outside, yet large on the inside. It offers beautiful views of the city of Uwajima from the top floor windows. Also it is worth noting, that the route to the castle goes through a forested area with very interesting trees and flowers. This area is a gem itself - it is like a small botanical garden.
Very beautiful and serene! Quiet and peaceful. The stairs inside the castle are scary to climb though.
Beautiful castle with view over the Harbor site and city. The way up was a short, nice little hike

Great place to start your visit to Uwajima. Tourist office, shopping, Pearl Pavillon, snack foods and a good sushi place near by. Large parking area and nice views of the fishing boats in the harbor.
We found two vegan souvenirs here. It’s a huge place offering vegetables, fruits, juices and souvenirs. It saved us lots of time searching for gifts.
They have Royces Ice Cream there!!

A rest area with the stores
(Translated by Google) I always go there when I'm on a business trip to Uwajima. The roadside station sells high-quality local produce, seafood, fruits, and vegetables at low prices. When I'm on a business trip, it's heavy to carry back, but I always end up buying a lot of citrus fruits like mandarin oranges and seafood. There's also a Royce store, so there's a lot to enjoy. There are also several restaurants serving seafood bowls, which are really cheap, fresh, and delicious. On the day I tried the Uwajima Fisherman's Pickled Rice Bowl, and it was great to be able to enjoy a variety of pickled sashimi. There's also a giant ushi-oni statue displayed in an annex, which is said to be served at festivals. When I saw it for the first time, knowing nothing about it, it gave me goosebumps. I'd like to visit Uwajima during the Ushi-oni Festival someday.

A terraced field reminiscent of those in the highlands of Peru, e.g. Machu Picchu. The fields were bare when I visited but I believe they are still in use, for example to grow potatoes, as I sampled a shouchu (a traditional distilled beverage akin to vodka, albeit a lot weaker alcoholic strength wise) made from potatoes grown here the night before in Uwajima. The fields are layered up a hill which is very, very steep in some places, and some strips a very narrow, barely a meter wide. Life must have been very tough around here in the old days, with minimal flat land available for crop cultivation. Well worth a visit if you drive. It is also possible to visit the village from Uwajima using the local bus but it takes an hour or so to get here and you may have to wait four hours or so for the journey back into town.
Egyptian pyramid? No, this is a farmland on a mountainous peninsula in Uwajima. Farmers took all the agricultural products from this tiny farmland at this moment when we visited there in late October. When you visit there in Spring or Summer, you might see lots of green products there.
Very nice walk among the rice terrace fields. Lovely place on a sunny afternoon. Parking is available for free.
I guess the timing is really important for this place and I didn’t get it really right. It’s really a special place though - a very different kind of terraced fields!
Difficult to access, but worth the drive. The potatoes here are delicious.
it is so amazing place. it is huge you can get inspirations
(Translated by Google) I parked in the parking lot and explored on foot. There's a sign indicating the "Entrance" right next to the parking lot, but the slope is gentler and easier if you start from behind the guesthouse "Danbatake Sanoya." (By chance, Sanoya told me, "You can start from here.") Each terraced field is steep, and I'm truly in awe of both the people who built it in the past and the people who maintain it today by farming...

Making use of the steep mountainside, the stone walls were built by hand one by one and are still used for agriculture today, creating a cultural landscape where people and nature can be felt coexisting. The terraced fields are mainly used to grow potatoes and other crops, and as a rare "stone-built field facing the sea," it has been selected as a National Important Cultural Landscape. The view of the Uwa Sea spreading out beyond the fields is also wonderful, and the scenery interwoven with the sea, sky, and stonework shows different expressions depending on the season and time of day you visit. It has not been overly touristed, and one of its charms is the simple, quiet atmosphere. There is also an information board in the viewing area, where you can learn about the origins of the settlement and farming methods. Beautiful and peaceful garden.
Lovely! It was so peaceful and serene. Personally, I don't think ¥500 is worth it but I understand the money goes for the upkeep. It will be even more beautiful when the flowers (lilies and wisteria) are in bloom.
We bought 4 sets of admission ticket for both 南樂園and天郝園 (共用通用券) from 南樂園 costed ¥2200 on 9Dec19, but when we arrived to Tenshaen found it was closed. How can I get refund.
Beautiful gardens. Iris were blooming.
No other adjective needed - gorgeous!
Meticulously maintained garden dating back to 1866, with a lot of thought put into its layout and plant selection by feudal lord Date. An oasis of peacefulness in the city of Uwajima. The parking lot was free to use. The staff were friendly. The entrance fee is 500 yen. You can also purchase quite a large bag of carp pellets for only 100 yen. And dont forget that the park has one out of five stamps for your free Uwajima post card!

Very quiet and beautiful! They are busy preparing for the Uwajima Festival so you could see the outline for the "floats". They also have a beautiful painting of a snake for the year of the 🐍. You can also see the old paintings for the year of the 🐉 and the year of the 🐇.
I must visit place in Uwajima City if you're a tourist and first time in Japan. It's considered a holy place. The atmosphere is solemn and the Nature feels like heaven.
A peaceful and photogenic shrine. I visited around 5pm on a weekday in Autumn and luckily the office was still open :) They were happy to sign my goshuinchō. The goshuinchō design they had was so cute that I couldn't resist and bought one. They have very cute omamori too.

This shrine is located at the northern end of Uwajima city, on the ruins of Kamae Castle, and is the head shrine of the Warei faith, enshrining the spirit of Yamaga Seibei Kimiyori, a former elder retainer of the Uwajima domain. Kimiyori was originally a retainer of the Date clan of Sendai, and accompanied Hidemune, the eldest son of Date Masamune, who was transferred to Uwajima, to this area. He implemented policies such as tax reduction and industrial promotion, and helped rebuild the domain, earning him the respect of the people of the domain. Very interesting shrine, although the scale is small, but the environment is comfortable.
This is an interest shrine which I have no idea what they worship. It is know for a wooden sculpture of male reproductive organ that is over two meters long. I was expecting more but that was it. There is a smaller rock sculpture but not as amazing. Other than that, there is a sort of a sex museum next to the shrine which I did not visit and not able to review.
This is a shrine where the main selling point is that they have a very large phallic object made of wood. Said object is displayed on the side of one of the buildings of the shrine, but is obscured by branches and leaves. I'm aware that they do have a festival where they parade it around town. This place doesn't really make the official tourism guides. I don't think there's very much appeal to visiting this shrine. Watch out for mosquitoes!

Not all of the original castles and castle towns have a lot of artifacts left that link them to their history or residents. So, I was glad I could go visit this little museum showcasing some of those items; whether it be clothing, armor, artworks or writings. It all makes the history come a bit more to life. However, in terms of content, I felt that it was all about arranging items and adding explanatory text, so I didn't find anything that left a lasting impression on me. It may also be due to the age of the building itself. It seems that plans are currently underway to renovate and relocate the museum, so I would like to visit again when the new museum is completed. Also, photography is basically prohibited, so it's sad that there aren't many permissions to take photos, but it can't be helped since it's a work of art. It’s a tranquil spot to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. Highly recommended for anyone seeking peace and adventure!
Narrow road before getting there but it's worth driving it ! Nice place to have lunch! We didn't have time to do the whole trail to the top but for what we saw it was incredible ! We saw some monkeys too :)
Great place to visit. Very beautiful. Highly recommend, but remote.
Amazing series of waterfalls and chutes. Best to go there in summer or autumn. The hiking path and the rocks can be slippery, so wear proper shoes.
Nametoko is a nice place to enjoy the autumn colours. There's a walk that follows the river upstream for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

(Translated by Google) Although it is a shrine, it is a shrine that incorporates the culture of other countries. The museum next to it was especially impressive and worth entering. It's amazing that you've been able to gather all this material. But the air was heavy with all kinds of emotions mixed in. It was worth seeing and I found it interesting. Three months after the visit, I discovered I was pregnant. The child from that time has also grown up quickly, and this time I visited to pay my respects. The calm atmosphere is the same as it was five years ago. Honestly, this rowdy boy is enough for me as a child, so I just informed him that there was an increase in the number of children in my family and thanked him. Beautiful little temple on a hill across from the train station. It has great views of the surrounding hills.
Serene and quiet. A part of the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
Nice little sanctuary with a view of the city.
(Translated by Google) The temple was located in the town. Parking may be difficult to find. There is a monthly parking lot under the stairs of the temple, and there is a parking lot for contract holders. So I was able to park it under the stairs. In the middle of the stairs, you will be greeted by a magnificent Ni-o-sama. It was a very quiet temple and there was a lawn, which is rare for a temple. I received a handmade acorn figurine as entertainment at the nokyosho and went home.

The temple grounds are on high ground, so a pleasant breeze blows, and the view of Uwajima cityscape, Uwajima Castle, and the atmosphere of the temple grounds are wonderful. Use it as a reference for your pilgrimage or temple tour. Historical Background • Rinkaisan Fukujuji Ryukoin Temple was built in 1615 (the first year of the Genwa era) when Date Hidemune, the lord of the Uwajima domain, entered Uwajima. It served as a place of prayer for the domain's peace and prosperity, as well as to protect Uwajima Castle from the evil direction (the northeast direction) of Uwajima Castle. • In 1638 (the 15th year of the Kan'ei era), Prince Kusho of Daikakuji Temple bestowed the temple name "Rinkaisan Fukujuji Temple." • In addition, Ganjoji Temple (Henshozan Ganjoji Temple, "Kujira Daishi"), originally the 40th of the 88 Shikoku Temples, and its worship site, Umamegi Daishi (Motoyugake), were enshrined at Ryukoin Temple during the Meiji period and other periods, and continue to serve as the inner sanctuary. ⸻ Highlights/Features • The temple grounds are located on a hill near the center of Uwajima City, offering panoramic views of the ocean and scenery, including Uwajima Castle and the Kyushu Islands. The views are excellent, and you feel as if you're looking down on the town. • On the mountain behind the temple is a huge, single-stone Kannon statue known as the "Great Kannon Statue," which is believed to ward off disasters and bring good fortune to the local area. • The temple is fully equipped with the facilities of a pilgrimage temple, including a main hall and a sutra office, where you can receive goshuin (stamps). Sutra offering hours are from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. ⸻ Relationship to the Pilgrimage • Ryukoin is the sixth of the "Twenty Special Sacred Sites of Shikoku." Special sacred sites are ranked differently from the 88 Shikoku temples, and are considered special in terms of history and religious significance. • It is also considered the inner sanctuary of Kanjizaiji, the 40th of the 88 Shikoku temples, and has undergone various transformations, from Ganjoji (Henshozan) to Umamegi Daishi to Ryukoin. There is also a section dedicated to the principal image of Kobo Daishi as the inner sanctuary.

In the Heian period (816), when Kukai was 42 years old, he traveled to the Kushima Islands off the coast of Uwajima City. He was saddened by the fact that the islands were far from the capital and difficult to reach, and he made a vow to found the Shikoku Pilgrimage pilgrimage route, establishing sacred sites throughout Shikoku and deepening people's faith through pilgrimages. He therefore founded Ganjo-ji Temple. At the time, it was just a vow, and in today's terms, it was merely a conceptual proposal, with no concrete plan in place. Construction of Ryuko-ji Temple began in the early Edo period. Later, Ganjo-ji Temple on the Kushima Islands was enshrined at Ryuko-ji Temple, making it the temple responsible for the founding of the 88 sacred sites of Shikoku.

The temple is very uniquely designed, and as it is also the inner sanctuary of Ryuko-ji Temple, it felt particularly welcoming. Unfortunately, it was raining the day I visited, so there was no one there. However, I have great respect for the people who planned and maintained the temple, as it gives people a unique feeling and is definitely worth a visit.
