A real shame, as the food that eventually came out from the kitchen was genuinely excellent — credit to the chef. But the front-of-house attitude, particularly from younger staff, suggested a level of superiority that doesn’t match the standard the hotel aspires to. We often visit Chagford and usually stay at The Globe next door, which is always warm, welcoming, and faultless. It was fully booked this time — but thankfully we still managed to have dinner there the night before, which was superb. The building itself steeped in history so quirky with modern touches. Parking for us was good as we had booked a superior room which includes a parking space in the hotel car park. No view just the roof of their restaurant & a very noisy generator. Steep, narrow stairs to the upper floor, but there is an alternative easy staircase, which is the fire exit we later discovered. Food was delicious but sadly customer service from some staff members was very disappointing & rude particularly at breakfast. We were not alone, and another couple who sat at the next table spoke to us about it. We couldn't relax in the bar area after dinner as booked out to a private group & reservations for people with dogs. So, we had to go back up to our room mid evening instead to finish our wine as raining outside. It was my husbands birthday weekend treat, but no fuss was made, not even a mention which surprised me. Warm Rose was served to us by bottle, and when we asked if there was one chilled, we were told that's all we've got, so we had to put ice into it. All in all, it was a relaxing couple of days with a couple of staff who made us feel welcome and comfortable, but sadly, due to other experiences throughout our time there, we wouldn't return when there is so many other places that are similar pricing in Devon & Cornwall which have left us feeling appreciated as guests & nothing is too much trouble.

I think the food itself overpriced but can get over, the service prior to complaining about the room was really good. How they have dealt with things since has been really rubbish. You wouldn't event get this in a Travelodge or premier inn. Don't trust the 5* reviews- go elsewhere for food and your stay!

We felt bad and the lady offered to make something else but I reminded her how long we had waited for the food so I left hungry which my husband wasn’t happy about. I just don’t understand why the food took so long because from what we could see we were the only customers in the restaurant. What a shame because the pub is in a lovely setting and we enjoyed sitting outside for drinks before dinner but we also couldn’t understand why it was so quiet at 6pm. I must say it was the worst meal that I’ve ever had so won’t be returning next year. Even though we were not charged for my meal which was a nice gesture from the waitress it’s not enough to persuade us to return next year. The waitress is a gem and nothing was too much trouble which is the only reason I’ve scored for service.

I knew immediately this was going to be my sort of place! As we entered, the bar area was relatively quiet as it was midweek, but still a good number of patrons so there was a nice atmosphere. The previous place we'd been had been hectic, so this was a lovely change of pace and our group could chat and hear each other. The large windows at the front meant that when though it was getting later and darker, the ambience was one of casual cafe bar where you can watch your little part of world pass by. The beer choice was excellent. A fine range of ales to suit any palette from pales to the more hardcore imperial stouts (of course I did! It's me!!!) The chap behind the bar was helpful and engaging and happy to discuss the options to make sure we had the right beers for us. Frankly, if I lived in Exeter, this would be a regular haunt for me! On the subject of zombie apocalypse, I feel this place might be a useful short term location. Drinks and snacks to keep you going. The large windows mean it might be hard to defend unless they've got shutters (I should have checked!)
