Kandy Lake is absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Right in the heart of the city, it offers a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle. The path around the lake is flat and easy to walk—about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace—making it a great way to soak in some nature without much effort.
One of the most fascinating things about the lake is how much wildlife you can spot. We saw monkeys swinging through the trees, huge water monitors (honestly, some of the biggest I’ve ever seen—even bigger than the ones in Thailand!), and all kinds of birds. We spotted pelicans, kingfishers, herons, and this time of year (June), there were tons of baby birds in nests—so sweet to see.
One heads-up though: there are large bats (flying foxes) hanging in the trees around the lake. They’re impressive to see, but fair warning—they do poop, and it might land on you if you’re not paying attention, so maybe don’t linger directly under the trees too long!
The lake itself was created in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of Sri Lanka, and it’s still a central part of life in Kandy. Right next to it is the famous Temple of the Tooth, so it’s easy to combine the walk with a visit to one of the country’s most important cultural sites.

한국인을 위해 공유한다. 캔디에서 사실 보고 경험할 만한 것이 많이 없기에 툭툭 대절해서 다녀왔다. 배낭여행객 입장에서는 입장료가 너무 비쌌다.2025.7.3. 부가세가 무려18% 포함해서 3540(한화 16,000)이고 천천히 둘러보는데 2시간여 걸렸고 평일이여서 한적해서 그나마 좋았다. 스리랑카에서 의외로 단체 여행 중국인들이 많다. 때문에 중국인들 주변은 항상 번잡하고 시끄럽다. 캔디에서 몇 일 쉬는 여행객이라면 가볼 만한 곳이지만 하루정도 머물고 다른 곳으로 이동하는 한국인은 굳이 안가도 될 수준.

이런 저런 이유로 식물원 내부의 기념품점에서 시간을 보냈습니다.
다음에 시간 여유를 갖고 식물원 관람도 코끼리열차(?) 타고 해보고 싶습니다.

This museum is conveniently located in the palace area nestled behind the temple of tooth. It was overall informative of the history of Kandy and had some great pieces with simple but informative information in a number of languages (including English). My personal highlight was some great old maps of Sri Lanka. It was very quiet when we went. It is not very large. It definitely provided lots of information however it was not exhaustive. Tickets are 600 rupees for foreign adults

Overlooked because most people go to the tooth temple but this is really a must see in Kandy. A lot of people don’t understand the history behind this building This building established during Sri Wickrama Rajasingha era was then known as “Palle Vahala” This was used as the palace where the Queens of the king lived. This building has been built according to the architectural features of Kandy period. This pallevahala building was used to deposit the various items of historical value made by Kandy Art Association established in 1832 and technicians of Matale district. This was opened for the public as a museum 1942.
This museum has over 5000 museum objects which are depicting various aspects historical and cultural events of the Kandyan period. (17-19 century A.D.)

Visited this museum with kids. We visited by walking to the back of the Kandy temple of Tooth palace along the lake edge.
It's a small museum with some 17th to 19th century Kandy kingdom era items.
This museum building itself is historic and part of the Kandy palace. The size of walls, doors frames is massive.
Next to this museum, is another museum building called "Middle Palace", which was the king and queens bedchambers. It is opened only till 4pm.
The museum consists of few large rooms. Took us less than a hour to read descriptions and see the whole.

We happened to be there on a Sunday which was quite to popular day for locals to say their prayers. Make sure you have a sarong or pants to cover legs, if not there are vendors selling them to the right of temple where you can get flower offerings as well. Sarong was about 2k rupees and a whole tray of gorgeous lotus flowers were only 1k. Foreigners must enter to the right of temple , buy a ticket from the machine which only takes cash I think it was 2k per person and then you must check your shoes. All temples are barefoot.
If you want to see the tooth it was a mental line up. Temple was nice for a walk around, we gave away some of our flowers and dud a little offering upstairs.

The museum was very interesting and they have some lovely artifacts on display. Photography is not allowed in the museum. A general sense of peace and calm surrounds this amazing place.
Elephant wash and feed nearby was absolutely wonderful as these elephants are royal elephants! Rich history in every nook and cranny.

A lovely church that's sitting in Kandy near the Tooth relic temple. Peaceful and simple are my words to describe it. I asked for permission before clicking pictures here and the stained glass windows have my heart.
Lot of history to the church can be found on the walls inside the church. Overall a nice visit. They even have live performances on Saturdays with three prayer rounds with live choir.
One must visit this place that's very easy to reach to and as I mentioned it's near the Tooth relic temple, one can visit both on their tour to sri Lanka..Kandy.
There's a good coffee shop too nearby, rather opposite to the church where the cars are packed. It's the best way to spend a few hours praying to the deities and then having some coffee to unwind and head to the next stop.

I used to attend St Paul's, in 1964-66, when I worked at then University of Ceylon, Peradeniya Campus. Then my father and my elder sister's family moved to Kandy. They attended St Paul's and my sister still attends, St Paul's. My father (G.S.Peter) served as a Treasurer for a long time and when he retired my B.I.L. (Michael Fernando) took over from him. Definitely wouldn’t pay to go inside after reading some very bad reviews about tourists scams. I don’t like the dishonesty and falsely proclaiming things to tourists to entice them in and/or to donate. It ruins what would be a beautiful experience for foreigners who are looking to enjoy the culture and spiritual side of Sri Lanka. Best to look at the temple from the outside for free.

This Hindu kovil dedicated to the Tamil God Sri Murugan, also known as Sri Skanda is venerated by the largely Sinhala Buddhist devotees in the area as Nuwara Maha Kataragama Devalaya, transcending religious beliefs and ethnicity.
As you step into the kovil precincts from colourful entrance you enter the main shrine room where Sri Murugan (Kataragama Deviyo) is the presiding deity. The rituals are conducted by Hindu priests.
To the left is a shrine of the Buddha and a Bodhi Tree an important symbol of Buddhism.
There are shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha (Gana Deviyo to the Buddhists) and Lord Vishnu (Saman Deviyo to the Buddhists) underlying the close links between the two great religions.

This is definitely a tourist scam, all religions are based on peace and loving
We entered this place just to see inside and then after the took us our shoes they took 400 LKR from us
The place looks like any other, but the problem was with someone following you and then they took us to a room (for blessing) although we resisted but he was so pushy to see inside.
Once we went inside a man came and put white bracelet and asked us to donate. Showing us a paper that people before us donated 5K! When I refused and left the place he kept following us until we even took our shoes he insisted to come with me to the hotel to take the money!
It is a creepy place and definitely scam I don’t recommend it at all!
I would ignore this bad experience and keep the beautiful memories of sri lanka people and nature.

The inaugural Benedictine Monastery in the East, known as St. Anthony's Monastery, was officially consecrated by Mgr. Sillani in Kandy. On April 4th, 1875, Fr. Leo Cingolani was ordained as the blessed Abbot. The abbatial church of this monastery received its blessing from Mgr. Sillani OSB on December 15th, 1877 and eventually became a cathedral in subsequent years.

Such a lovely and peaceful church! My boyfriend and I went to attend Mass here, and it was a truly special experience. As a huge St. Anthony fan, I was so happy to see how beautiful and well-maintained the church was.
