This is an absolutely fantastic hike and worth every penny (we did the 4-day Inca Trail). I highly recommend Inca Trail Machu as a guide service. They provided a great experience from pickup to drop off and everything in between. A few things I loved about them are: First, Julio, our guide, was great. He was friendly and knowledgeable and made you laugh and feel good during the rougher part of the hike. He also helped us get home when some protestors disrupted the train service. We had multiple trains that were canceled, standing a lot of tourists, and we weren’t sure if we were going to get stuck in Aguas Calientes for the night. While we waited, Julio helped us find a restaurant that had a shower we could use, we hung out and had dinner and some local drinks, and then he went to the train station to help us navigate the mayhem of trying to secure one of the final seats out that night (people in Peru don’t wait politely in lines, FYI). Next is the small groups. Some of the other guide services had 10+ people in their groups, while we had 6 (I think they top out at 8 people). The group consisted of my girlfriend and I and a group of 4 Dutch guys who were childhood friends. This created an extremely personal experience as we had a small group for meals, and during the hike while not having to wait on stragglers. As the 4 Dutch guys were fine being on their own and preferred to run the trail, this left Julio with my girlfriend and I to walk as our own kind of private tour for long stretches. It also allowed us to move faster on the final morning to make our way to the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu before the other larger groups, allowing us to get less crowded pictures and views. The porters and cooks were also top-notch. I think I ate better on the trail than I do at home. The creations of meals that were served were unique and tasty. I would have been impressed at a restaurant, let alone on a trail miles from the nearest store, they even had a surprise for the final meal, I won’t ruin it but it was insane they could make it and it was super tasty. The porter gently woke you up every morning with some coca tea if you wanted, and then while you ate, they packed up your tent, when you arrived at the campsite for the night, your tent was waiting for you, and you could crawl in and relax while dinner was being cooked. The tents were spacious for you, and a +1 with both your gear, we did not feel cramped. Also, the sleeping bags and pillows were comfortable, allowing for a peaceful sleep throughout the night. Make sure to book the Huayna Picchu tour as this is a separate ticket that allows you to climb even higher to a guard tower that overlooks the city. It is incredible. I’m extremely afraid of heights and part of the climb is a little scary but totally worth it. I would also recommend using the provided walking sticks (note you can’t bring them into the city so I’d use theirs over your own as you can turn them in before you enter) as they help not only on the uphill but also going down the stone steps when wet. Make sure you bring cash on the trail to tip the porters, as they will leave before you enter the city and you won’t have time to get to an ATM. These guys turn and burn to get back and do the hike again with another group. They are awesome and deserve the tips!

The service was excellent in every way. My high expectations were met and even exceeded. Should have 6 stars.
Our guide Josias was exceptional. He was well organized and very helpful when some people got sick and was willing to do whatever it took to help us make it.
The chef and porters all did an excellent job. It was amazing to have such good meals on the trail.
I recommend the 5 day Trek. We hiked the standard 4 days and we tour circuit 1. However, we were very tired by then and it was nice to have the extra day to rest and finish tour circuit 2 Machu Picchu and the mountain the next day.

We did the 2-day Inca Trail and we were extremely happy with the office interaction/support and our guide, Daniel. They organized a short briefing before the trip, which was useful and stored our other luggage during our trip. Everything worked out great, our guide gave very interesting information in a didactically good manner and provided a very good mixture of independence and guidance; we were super-happy how all that turned out. Hotel and dinner in Aguas Calientes were also of good quality.

10/10 would recommend booking with Inca tours. They were a great company to work with and our guide Bernabe is the best there is. He and the porters went above and beyond what we expected and made this experience a trip of a lifetime. We chose to do a 3 day / 2-night trip. We picked this because of our tight timeline. Although, if time permits, I suggest taking your time and doing it in 4 or 5 days. We are backpackers from Colorado and 3 days on the Inca Trail was difficult especially day 1. Our guide Bernabe met us the night before and ran us through the itinerary. We initially thought we booked a tour that included other groups but turned out to be just my wife and I. This made the hiking much more enjoyable. Our small group let us move quickly which was nice to put some distance between us and other large tour groups. This made our experience feel a little more isolated and remote which we really enjoyed. Bernabe taught us all about the Inca ruins along the trail. He had insightful knowledge about the Inca people, history and of the local botany.
The second night at camp, we found ourselves unable to take our eyes off the sun set. We found ourselves in a moment of self-reflection and gratitude high above the clouds watching the sun set on Huayna Picchu. This day happened to be my wife's birthday which made it extra special. After another beautifully prepared and diverse meal. Bernabe tells us our chef prepared a BIRTHDAY CAKE! They brought out a cake and we ate cake with our porters. It was a birthday for the books.
The next morning, we made it to Machu Pichu around 8am and took amazing photos from the upper level before walking through Machu Pichu.
This experience would not have been possible without our team of porters who are the real MVP's, these men work so hard and were so friendly. This entire trip we felt a deep respect, privilege and honor to be hiking through these mountains. In a somber moment we gave thanks to the pacha mamma for all she provides. As we finished, the clouds cleared and the sun shone down on us, another serendipitous moment along the trail. For us this trek was why we came to Peru, Machu Pichu was the cherry on top. The Inca Trail was on our bucket list and it did not disappoint. We are so thankful for Bernabe and the team of porters for sharing this experience with us and making it come true.

Came here with a a group on the 4 day hike and was not disappointed.
First thing to do is to acclimatise yourself to the altitude - it took me 3 days. Also, take hiking sticks as it’s much easier - especially downhill.
Take ponchos with you as you will get rain in the cloud forest and it’s the easiest thing to use and to dry afterwards.
You pass a number of really beautiful Inca cities wh I build you up to the final view - Macchu Picchu. An awesome experience

We had a fantastic 2 day trip. Nico was our guide and he was great! He had extensive knowledge about the flora and fauna in the area, and also provided us with tons of in depth descriptions about the Inca's and how they lived and farmed in the area. He was also very patient with us. We definitely felt the altitude on the hike, but are very glad we chose to do the hike instead of just taking the train + bus in to see Machu Picchu. Coming over the sun gate and seeing it for the first time was magical. We were given a bag to carry our lunch in, it was from a town in Ollantaytambo and was delicious (also looked to be a better lunch than many others on the trail). It was a fairly pricey 2 days, but something to be done once in a life time. Would definitely recommend, and I would book with Inca Trail Machu again!

We had an amazing time hiking to Rainbow Mountain with our guide ibrahim; he was very patient and well informed about the area. The driver was great as well. Food and tickets were well organized; we did not have to stop as the other people did. We also arrived early to the view point, and we did not meet a lot of people, which was great to enjoy the tour as much as we could. 10/10 for these guys; it's worth it!

Nosotros tomamos un transporte hasta Tauca en Chinchero.
Allí comienza la subida hasta el abra o paso de montaña. Son cerca de 2 horas y media con una pendiente suave. Solo los últimos 10 min son un poco más exigentes.
Allí puedes almorzar y disfrutar las bellas vistas.
Comenzamos el descenso que es suave y hay que estar atentos al camino, no hay señalización pero no es muy complicado seguir.
La zona Inca del camino es preciosa. Hay un gran peñón por donde pasa el río que es espectacular.
Llegas primero a un mirador donde puedes disfrutar de espectaculares vistas del Valle Sagrado.
Luego de unas 3 horas es que llegas al complejo arqueológico. Grande y en buen estado. Allí debes pagar S/7 por persona.
La bajada hacia Lamay es un zig-zag bastante empinado que recomiendo hacer poco a poco para cuidar las rodillas y toma poco más de una hora. Allí estaba nuestro transporte esperándonos.

Probabilmente uno degli spot più interessanti del mio viaggio in Perù. La Rainbow Mountain rappresenta il punto finale di un percorso che porta oltre i 5.000 metri di quota, regalando una vista eccezionale non solo sulla montagna colorata, ma anche su un maestoso ghiacciaio alle sue spalle.
Il percorso non è semplice, soprattutto nell’ultima parte: si può affrontare a piedi (circa 15 km complessivi), oppure noleggiando un asino o un cavallo. In alternativa, è possibile arrivare dal versante opposto in quad e poi proseguire a piedi per circa 4 km. Personalmente ho scelto di salire passando dalla Valle Rossa (un’esperienza di per sé spettacolare, per cui vi rimando alla mia recensione dedicata).
L’altitudine si fa sentire: manca l’aria e bisogna procedere con calma per non andare in affanno. I tour organizzati in genere portano con sé bombole di ossigeno, utili in caso di malessere. Un minimo di allenamento è consigliato, ma soprattutto serve pazienza e passo lento per arrivare in cima.
La fatica, però, viene ampiamente ripagata: i panorami sono mozzafiato lungo tutto il cammino, non solo sul punto più alto. Si cammina immersi in scenari naturali unici, tra lama, pecore, cavalli, asini, condor e la presenza accogliente delle comunità locali che gestiscono l’area.

We booked a Humantay lake day trip with Machu Picchu Trekking the day before, because we weren't sure in advance how we would acclimatize to the elevation in Cusco.
Machu Picchu Trekking were more than accommodating, find 2 spaces for us to go the next morning in an 18 person group.
The trip included breakfast and lunch at a beautiful place overlooking the mountains, and then the hike up to Humantay lake. We are so glad they found space for us, because the views were absolutely spectacular. Definitely worth the day trip.
The hike was a little challenging for me at that elevation, but we were never pressured to go at a certain pace and as it's only 3km up to the top and only one path with plenty of people, we could all take our time and reconvene with the guide at the top. Our guide also spoke good English.

Excellent work. We came to Peru last minute without any plans. Ended up in Cusco and at Machu Picchu Trekking. We told Carlos what days we had available and what we would like to do and he was able to work together two individual trips to meet all of our needs. I signed up for the 7 Lagunas Ausangate tour literally the night before. They picked me up at about 4:30am and drove the group to a small village called Pacchanta which is about 3 hours away from Cusco. They served us a very light breakfast then off we went to start our 5 hour trek through the mountains. You will reach about 6834m so be mindful of that and come prepared! I saw birds, alpacas, llamas and bunnies. I even rented a horse because why not? When we finished the hike, they served us a delicious lunch then we had an opportunity to enjoy the relaxing hot springs. It was such a beautiful experience. I can’t wait to return with my husband!

I went to Relaxing time Massage the day after I got back from the 4 day Inka Trail. I got a massage, facial cleansing, a manicure and pedicure (basically a whole spa day). And it was incredible! I started with the Inka cursive Massage with Nelida and she was absolutely amazing! I just completed the 1 day Palcoyo excursion. They were good with communicating with me and allowed flexibility in changing my schedule tour. They picked me up on time and the meals offered had quite a bit of variety. That's why I'm giving them 3 stars, but if I were to base it on our guide, it would be lower.
Our guide was OK. He shared some basic commentary when the group headed out and a bit more once we got closer. When we got to Palcoyo, he took us up to the base and drew on the ground what looked like an inverted P with a rock in the ground. He said that the place had 3 mountains and it could take 30 minutes to do. If you felt good you could do another one after the 3rd mountain. He tried to show us which mountain he was referring to and then got out his phone and only showed a couple of people. The rest of us didn't get to see it. I thought he was going to be with us the whole way but that wasn't the case. He started to come with us but essentially we were left on our own and there was no guide/ information shared for any of the 3 mountains. We were mainly on our own and any instructions/information given were vague or unclear, as other travelers from the group had mentioned.
At one point, he saw some of us and said he should be back by 11. Clearly not everyone got that message because we waited for people to come back at 11:30.
While I felt fine doing the hike, once I was back, my head felt like it was pounding and I wasn't sure if I was going to throw up. I had seen our guide help one of the people on our group. So at lunch I told him I wasn't feeling well and asked if he had anything, to which he pointed to some people and said they have vomit bags (it wasn't clear who I should've been taking to but they were travelers who had just done the hike as well). That's it. No offer to see how I was doing and if I needed anything. That left a bad taste in my mouth.
Overall, I'm happy I went but don't know if I would go back and use Machu Picchu Reservations again for another tour option given my experience with the guide.

Katastrophe! Habe eine Taxifahrt nach Palccoyo gebucht. Leider hatte der Taxifahrer absolut keine Ahnung und wollte das aber auch nicht zugeben. Zuerst ist er nach Vinicunca gefahren, irgendwann haben wir uns gewundert und gefragt, ob das schon der Weg nach Palccoyo ist - war es nicht. Und dann ging’s los: er ist umgedreht und hat noch behauptet, es sei nicht weit, nur 20 Minuten mehr. Wir sind dann einfach irgendwo langgefahren, immer tiefer in das Tal rein. Irgendwann hat er dann doch mal jemanden gefragt und tatsächlich sind wir die ganze Zeit in die falsche Richtung gefahren. Dann ging’s weiter mit dem Rimgeirre und wildem Rumgedrücke in Google Maps, was nichts bringt, weil man erstens keinen Empfang hat und zweitens der Weg nicht in Google Maps angezeigt wird. Als wir endlich wieder Empfang hatten, habe ich sofort die Company kontaktiert mit der Bitte ihrem Fahrer mal zu helfen, weil er wirklich absolut keine Ahnung hat, wohin er fahren muss. Nach fast drei zusätzlichen Stunden haben wir es letztendlich ans Ziel geschafft, die Sonne war zu dem Zeitpunkt leider hinter dicken Wolken verschwunden und unsere Abendpläne in
Cusco mussten wir absagen.
Besonders ärgerlich war, dass ich mindestens dreimal gefragt habe, ob er jetzt weiß, wohin er fahren muss und ob er sich sicher ist und dies jedes Mal bejahte wurde mit irgendwelchen Zeitangaben. Erst nach Aufforderung hat er Leute nach dem Weg gefragt, eine Entschuldigung gab‘s nicht bzw. erst als wir zurück in Cusco gesagt haben, dass dieser Service nicht den gesamten Betrag wert ist.
Das Unternehmen selber hat sich entschuldigt auf die Frage hin, ob sie für die Leistung den vollen Betrag erwarten, wurde ignoriert.
Ein Taxifahrer, der absolut keine Ahnung hat, wohin er fahren muss und dann nicht mal nachfragen will…

The trek is beautiful. Our guide Andy was oké. He did let us walk great parts of the trek by ourselfs, whilst talking to other trekkers/drinking chicha. We did call him out on his behavior (in our opinion a guide is supposed to guide you). After that, Andy stayed with us during the last part of the trek.
The food was delicious and prepared really well. We did felt obligated to tip our porter, cook and guide (our guide asked us for the tip). We were planning to tip, but we do not appriciate it, if we get asked for a tip. Especially because the website states the opposite (our staff is payed well, do not feel obligated to tip).

We did the Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek. A challenging yet very rewarding hike. A recent landslide had taken out the trail half way through so had to change plans on the spot but still ended up being a great time. Carlos was great and always answered my many questions quickly. We had an amazing trip w Hernan! The hospitality, food and accommodations totally exceeded my expectations! Hernan speaks wonderful English and is incredibly well versed in Inca history, birds, plants, etc. He and his team were always so incredibly helpful. The chef was absolutely fabulous and the food was so plentiful! The tent was really nice, the sleeping pads were thick and comfortable. It was a very deluxe experience. We had to make several changes to our itinerary and Hernan was always prompt and willing to help. I can’t imagine that any guide service could be better. This tour group was exceptional in every way! We also did a couple shorter one day hikes w Hernan. He is so patient and has a great sense of humor. The van for transportation is really nice and clean too. Loved it!!

Aside from all of the typical things I could say and rave about, I felt completely taken care of and had all of my needs addressed so I could totally relax and enjoy the amazing views! The Best Private Guide Extraordinaire! We were nervous to go on this trip with Covid, but Hernan assured me it was safe to come, and yes - we felt and were very safe here. I highly recommend coming now and missing the crowds - it is wonderful!
Hernan will customize your trip to suit your interests and help with everything you need along the way. We wanted to go off the beaten track and see more of LOCAL life in Peru. Hernan arranged a fantastic set of experiences for us in the Quillabamba region - an amazing lunch with a welcoming LOCAL family and then a tour of their farm. This was such a great experience. On this same leg of the trip we visited an amazing waterfall - had it all to ourselves to swim in and visited a hot spring to soak in. We also toured a coffee plantation with another LOCAL farmer and spent the day harvesting, preparing, roasting, and then drinking fresh coffee and chocolate! Amazing!
And of course, Hernan is the best local guide in the region to show you the caves, waterfalls, historic sites, relate the culture today to its roots, and brings a breadth of knowledge about the local flora and fauna. From where to stay to where and what to eat - he’s got all that all!
Even with all the Covid requirements to enter the country - it is easy breezy once you arrive. Review: Inca Trail with Tierras Vivas
Difficulty
Day one of the trail was fairly easy, lasting only a couple of hours with just one small hill to climb. I expected the trail to be moderately difficult overall, but the second day was especially challenging. Climbing over Dead Woman’s Pass was tough due to the steep ascent and the high altitude, which left me gasping for air and struggling to get enough oxygen.
Day three started with another ascent, which was also demanding, but the rest of the day was mostly downhill or flat, with small ups and downs. By this point, I was feeling quite tired, but it wasn’t unbearable. This section of the trail also offered a glimpse of fascinating Incan archaeological ruins, which were a highlight for me.
Food
The food on this hike was exceptional. Every day, we were served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all freshly prepared and with a variety of options. The meals showcased local Peruvian cuisine, providing a great opportunity to try new dishes.
A typical meal included soup before lunch and dinner, followed by 4 options of main courses. We were also treated to evening tea, coffee and hot chocolate with snacks before dinner, and occasionally small desserts. The portions were enormous, and I never felt hungry throughout the trek.
Leoncio, the head chef, and his assistant did an incredible job. They were hardworking, friendly, and always went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The food was delicious every single day, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication.
Tour Guide
Our tour guide, Ruben Huaman, was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgeable, having grown up in the region, and spoke Spanish, Quechua, and English fluently. This unique ability allowed him to explain the cultural and linguistic significance of the towns, mountains, and archaeological sites along the way.
Ruben was kind, approachable, and always helpful. He explained every step of the journey clearly and answered all our questions thoroughly. His great sense of humor added to the experience and lifted our spirits when we were feeling tired or deflated. His positive and friendly nature made a huge difference throughout the trek.
Porters
I want to give special mention to all eight porters, including the chefs. They were truly amazing to watch, carrying 20 to 35 kg packs through the mountains with ease, even at high altitudes where I struggled.
The porters worked tirelessly to set up our campsites, tents, and everything else we needed. Their hard work and efficiency were astounding, and they made the trek much more comfortable. I can’t compliment them enough – they were absolutely fantastic.
Views & Attractions
Before this trek, I had completed the Lost City Trail in Colombia, and I wasn’t sure how the beauty of the Inca Trail would compare. Let me say that the mountain ranges, flora, and overall scenery were breathtaking. The towering peaks, rivers, lagoons, and constant presence of nature made this an unforgettable experience.
Although we didn’t see much wildlife beyond a few hummingbirds, the Incan archaeological sites along the way were fascinating. These ancient ruins were stunning and added a rich historical context to the hike.
Tour Group
My only criticism of the experience isn’t about the tour itself, but the size of my group. There were only three people in our group, which made it harder to socialize and build connections. I was hoping for a larger group to foster more camaraderie and a sense of community.
If you’re considering this trek, I’d recommend reaching out to the company to ensure you’re part of a group size that suits your preferences. Some people might enjoy the intimacy of a smaller group, but I personally feel a larger group would have enhanced my experience.

Hiking the Inca Trail was the trip of a lifetime. It's one of the world's most popular trails but it far exceeded our expectations. Photos and videos do not do it justice. If you only ride the train to and from Machu Picchu, you are absolutely missing out.
Tierras Vivas made the experience incredible. They promised a group of 2 - 6 and we were the only two in the group! Many other groups had significantly more people - we felt very fortunate to have a private guide.
Our guide Ruben, was incredibly friendly and knowledgable. We enjoyed his company and would request him as a guide on a future trip to Peru.
The porters worked extremely hard and made sure our experience was as comfortable as possible. Our cook was incredible as well - we couldn't believe how many delicious meals he was able to make out on the trail. He even made us a cake!
I would absolutely recommend booking with this company. If you do, you won't regret it!

Booking with Tierras Vivas was a fantastic choice. I did the 4-Day Inca Jungle Trek.
The tour operator and guide seemed to be working for a separate company as the others in the group booked through other agencies. My experience on the trek in terms of transportation and tickets for Machu Picchu was much better and smoother than the others in the group. Booking through Tierras Vivas in advance gave me the confidence of knowing my Machu Picchu entry tickets and tourist train were already included and taken care of. Some others in the group had to rush to get to Aguas Calientes in order to get a chance at buying their tickets.
Throughout my whole experience the team at Tierras Vivas were communicating with me through WhatsApp and ensuring that everything was going well. They gave me clear instructions and arranged comfortable transportation from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.
As for the Inca Jungle Trek itself, it is an amazing alternative to the traditional Inca Trails. With the inclusion of mountain biking, river rafting, and zip lining, it is perfect for adrenaline-seekers. Not to mention it is cheaper too. The accommodations for the first 2 nights are basic so as long as you aren’t looking for anything fancy then I highly recommend the Inca Jungle Trek (or other treks) booking through this company.

Tierras Vivas created the most amazing, memorable, and life-changing experience to help us celebrate our final trip with our teenage son before he leaves the home!! We loved meeting with Tierras Vivas briefly a day prior to the trip to get the details about what we would and wouldn't need on the trip and what special rules there were on the trail and at Machu Picchu!
Our tour guide, Alibeths, was fabulous! She has a super positive attitude and really knows her Incan history! All of this came in handy on our 1st day: the scenic Inca Trail hike! The bus ride was uneventful. The train ride was so beautiful through the mountains. On our hike, the views and the altitude were absolutely breathtaking! It was very helpful to have a tour guide who was truly focused on our experience. We were able to travel at our pace and have as structured of an experience as we wanted.
Alibeths chose a perfect place for dinner in the quaint and charming Aguas Calientes, where we also stayed overnight. The meal and the hotel were included in the price which we absolutely loved. That way we only had to worry about picking a good tour company, and they handled the rest!!
We stayed at a beautiful, clean hotel which had breakfast included. The hotel had beautiful views along the river and tucked in the mountains!
Our second day was spent at Machu Picchu! What else is there to say?? Having Alibeths as a guide really helped us a lot, because there are so many rules and potential dangers that we didn't even have to worry about. We were able to focus fully on Machu Picchu and the unique history behind one of the 7 wonders of the world!
We fully, whole-heartedly recommend Tierras Vivas for this amazing tour. We also recommend Alibeths as a guide. The guide element is super important, because your guide can really set the tone for your entire trip. We travelled from Australia to do the 3 day, 2 night Inca trail (same trail as the 4 day but completed quicker) from 5th - 7th Jan 24. We were lucky enough to get Nico as our tour guide, who was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. He has so much knowledge which he shared along the way, made the trip extra special by pointing out flowers / plants etc, immersing us in the culture and history, helping us learn some simple Quechua, kept an eye on everything, and took care of us like family. We had many good laughs along the way! The food, tents, bedding, water etc was all perfect! The second day is tough with the stairs and altitude however with Nico’s motivation and care, we got through it and arrived to camp at a reasonable time still (5.30pm). Nico even helped motivate my partner along the way, who does not like camping or hiking very much, to the extend our Inca trail experience has been the highlight for both of us during our 1 month trip in South and Central America. A huge thanks to Clemente the chef (everything was delicious and huge servings) and to the porters Ronald, Lucho, Julian, Isaac, and Mario who made everything run very very smoothly. They even made a cake for my birthday!! Cannot recommend this team and company enough! THANK YOU 🙏🏼

I am not rating the trek itself or the chefs, our 2nd guide or the porters. The 2 stars are for the communication with the agency.
Until the booking it was all fine but after I paid the deposit requests remained partially unanswered or just answered after a reminder.
The first guide we got on our trek was not transparent about the plans and was telling different stories which led to confusion. The one plus point for the agency is that they changed the guide after day 4, but requests for partial refund after this initial misorganization and also having a larger group than expected remained unanswered or denied without understandable reason.
After talking to other trekkers there are other agencies where you get better service for same price.
The nature and the trek itself were fantastic though. Thanks to the chefs, porters and the second guide!
