Performing arts theater
Theatro José de Alencar is a historic architectural landmark located in Fortaleza, Ceara, Brazil. Built in 1910 and restored in the early 1990s, it boasts an ornate art-nouveau facade and can accommodate up to 120 people. The theater hosts regular performances and is attached to a large annex housing the Teatro Morro do Ouro and Centro de Artes Cenicas - CENA.
I visited the theater and the botanical gardens yesterday afternoon. What a marvelous place. And I was so impressed that the wrought iron was made in Belfast Ireland and sent here
John D — Google review
Beautiful old building which pays homage to Jose de Alencar, one of the most famous writers in Brazil. Although the gardens and part of theatre is open to the public, the best way is to go on a guided trip (Portuguese only) and you will have an excellent opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful theatres of Brazil Concerts are often free and tickets distributed on a first come first served basis (about 1 hour/45min before the actual show)
Rose V — Google review
Great theater 🎭 with air conditioning inside. The chairs are a bit old a uncomfortable so bringing a cushion would be a good idea 💡

Such a beautiful theatre that retains it's ancient design.
Blessing O — Google review
One of the greatest symbols of the Ceara culture is this theater that preserves on its name the spelling of the prominent Brazilian author “José de Alencar”. It was built between 1908 and 1910 with the budget from the cotton exportation. The “Belle Époque”, context when Fortaleza lived a progress mixed with glamor from French inspiration, influenced the architecture of the José de Alencar Theater. Originally, it was designed to be a garden theater, but the garden was only ready in 1975. Currently, the theater hosts plays and shows in addition to a performing arts school.
Claudemir A — Google review
Very interesting statue for José de Alencar in the middle of this square. It was designed by famous Humberto Cozzo (1900-1981). The writer is seated, a rather traditional pose and the painels in bronze are not that interesting. But the depictions of a cat and, the head of an indian and the piedestal as well are pure art deco. Be aware of prostitutes around the place. But as there are also a large number of policemen around, it's not that risky to walk around. At least not during the middle of the day.
Decuypere W — Google review
Great for spectacles, a lot of them free, just need to check the official website for the monthly concerts and plays.

In the evening, the area around Dragao do Mar transforms into a lively bohemian district with various bars and music venues for all tastes.
Beautiful, tranquil, central, and historic. A must-see if staying in Fortaleza. Great for couples and families with children. About a 10 minute walk from the Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza and close to numerous other sites and areas. Highly recommend!

It is a Nice place for art. Unfortunately the Spots and the places are Not Very good indicated, we got a little bit Lost.

The whole facilities are under major upgrading at the moment. There is in fact not much to see now.
Desmond H — Google review
The place was staffed, but closed for reconstruction and no indication of that prior to have saved the trip going there. According to the Uber Driver they want to open in two month (November 2025) again, but from the progress of the reconstruction (none), that seems to be very ambitious. Beside that, the area is not safe to walk and there’s nothing much else to do. All in all, it was a great disappointment.
Andreas K — Google review
In need of maintenance/update. Too little expositions. Stores closed. No energy at this place unfortunately. Expected a little more.

The exhibitions were cool! But it was hard to get around there because there weren't any signs. There's a nice looking cafe, but it opens at 3pm. It was very empty during day time but that was nice.

Handicraft
Mercado Central de Fortaleza is a bustling multi-level covered market that has been a city landmark since 1809. While it started as a place for meat, fruits, and vegetables, it has evolved into a hub for local crafts and souvenirs. The market's architecture is an attraction in itself, with its curvy walkways and modern design. With over 600 stores spread across four floors, visitors can find everything from artisan handicrafts to local products like caju nuts.
This is the place to get your souvenirs, don't shop on the beach as you're going to be taxed. I walked aeay with 4 decorated bottles of alchohol, 6 purses, 2 shirts, 10 bags of brazilian flavored nuts, 6 sweet bars, and a couple other things fir only $72 US.
Daniel P — Google review
variety but extremely hot place to visit. Barely any of the fans works and the it also feels a bit dangerous as some of the metal bridges are worn and with holes.
Everton S — Google review
Very nice for buying local products and handicraft on a nice price. Though I would definitely recommend speaking at least a bit of Spanish/Portuguese. It didn't seem like English was an option. I would also recommend the juice stand on the ground floor as they have juice from several local fruits.
David A — Google review
For all the gringos. Great spot to check out local confection/embroidery, super cheap. Also nuts like Brazil nut and cashews. Definitely worth the trip.
Arthur W — Google review
This an absolutely amazing market!!! Products from all over Brazil. Shop for deals! Many of the same items are available in various parts of the market. Make sure leather is actually leather. Enjoy the delicious goat meat and friendly people! Careful outside.
Matt G — Google review
A very nice place for everyone to come here for souvenirs. Venue is big and easy to stroll around.
Desmond H — Google review
Very interesting and massive market over four floors in a sort of massive atrium. Mostly clothes, shoes, bags, some foods and local carved figures. Couple of kilo restaurants inside too.
Paul D — Google review
As any market with this style, sales people will be approaching you all the time during your walk around the market. If you get used to it , then you have a quite enjoyable experience. You can find almost everything that you can buy from Fortaleza and the people are willing to negotiate prices( of course in PORTUGUESE) and support you! As a Brazilian I liked to visit and see the market, but I am not a fan of people pushing products to me or asking me all the time for what I want to Shop, etc. Nevertheless, it's the environment culture and let's respect it and enjoy it! Please visit and support local shopping staff, it will certainly be worth it!☺️

The Catedral Metropolitana de Fortaleza is a historic Gothic cathedral inspired by the famous Cologne Cathedral. Built between 1937 and 1963, it boasts stately architectural features such as towering spires reaching 75 meters high. The interior accommodates up to 5,000 worshippers and showcases beautiful stained glass windows. Despite its grimy exterior, the interiors gleam brilliant white.
Gorgeous exterior. Simple interior. The Metropolitana Cathedral is absolutely gorgeous and worth the visit! I will say, the outside was more beautiful than the inside. The cathedral is a wonderful place to sit down, relax, and recharge however the interior aesthetic is very simple and even run-down in many areas. Construction is currently underway as of March 2020 so hopefully this improves the visitor experience. Still a 5/5 in my book. A must-see when visiting Fortaleza. Just watch out for beggars outside the main entrance!
Sumner H — Google review
I saw some people mentioning vendors trying to push their products, but our experience wasn't like that. It was quite peaceful inside, and you have a great view of the stained glass windows. But I agree there's nothing around pointing to the history of the building, which is a shame.
David A — Google review
Beautiful place. But there is nothing that tells you the history of the place, how it was built, etc. like a sign or paper at the entrance. You need to search the internet yourself. And there are sellers around trying to force you to buy things, putting objects on you to force you to buy. It's not worth the visit.

The stadium first opened in 1973 and has since undergone renovations, solidifying its status as one of the top sports arenas in the state. With its rich history and modern facilities, Arena Castelão continues to host exciting matches and provide an unforgettable experience for fans.
Great and modern stadium, facilities are good. Plan to get there early as there is a lot of traffic on match days and it will take much longer than usual. Access was easy and uncomplicated. There were no assigned seat, only sections. Everyone was standing. Overall great experience!

Arena Castelão — officially known as Estádio Governador Plácido Aderaldo Castelo — is located in Fortaleza, Brazil. It was one of the main venues for both the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Here are a few key facts about it: •   Renovation and modernization: Originally built in 1973, it underwent major renovations between 2010 and 2012 to meet FIFA standards. •   Capacity: Around 63,000 spectators. •   Design: The renovation added a new roof, improved stands, better access, and sustainable features like rainwater reuse and solar panels. •   Technology: In recent years, Castelão introduced facial recognition technology at its gates, enhancing both security and entry efficiency for fans — a first among some major Brazilian stadiums. •   Use today: It’s home to local football clubs such as Ceará SC and Fortaleza EC, and still hosts large concerts and events.

I really enjoyed watching a soccer match at Castelão. The lines were organized and the seats were good. The only downside is that it can get really hot during the afternoon. It will depend on your seating area though. There is a parking lot outside. However I've never parked there.

Pirata Bar is a lively venue with a pirate theme and an outdoor stage for live music. Guests can expect to have a blast at this bar on Monday nights, where the party promises 'the craziest Monday in the world.' There's also Friday night forró dancing, which is an intimate, cheek-to-cheek dance popular in Brazil. Pirata Bar has good food and drinks, live music, and is located in a pleasant setting.
One of my best memories from Fortaleza night!!! Wow what an amazing forró experience, nice service, well organized and people just having fun without disturbing nobody. There are desks in open air space and the possibility to enjoy your drinks watching the band is just amazing! I recommend a visit if you have a chance!

It’s my second time in this old place, and I can say that for locals it’s perfect, but for tourists, it’s not. The surrounding area is popular but dangerous. Inside Pirata, there’s nothing spectacular to see—it’s just a regular old bar. The bathrooms are in very poor condition, and they often play games with the ticket prices. They charge 40 reais at the door, but only 22 reais if you buy in advance. Honestly, this old local bar isn’t worth it.

The food is disgusting and the service is even worse. Will never be coming back here. The food is nothing like the photos and came to the table as if it had been thawed and forgotten to be fried. And the food SHOULDN’T be frozen anyway. Truly revolting and nauseating. The server was also extremely rude and walked away when explaining concerns.

We went to this bar on Monday September 13-2021. Our hotel gave us cards to enter the bar for free so we didn’t have to pay the R$30 cover charge. 👍 The bar has a huge stage for the entertainment which was enjoyable that evening. We sat at the back of the bar which was great as the music 🎶 was load. I found the prices for beverages and food a little expensive. The food was tasty but not exceptional for the prices. Our server Mauro was awesome 👏👍 The washrooms were cleaned throughout the night which was nice. But the men’s washroom had a trough instead of urinals. 👎🏻

The unique place in our city. Always artist's performances in the square. You cannot leave Fortaleza without visiting this place. Be sure to visit the "Raimundo dos Queijos" which is a few blocks away. It has the best cheese in the region, as much as the service is not so exceptional. For those who look for a hammock there is a gentleman who sells his own hammocks that he produces in one of the corners of the square. There are several options of hammocks made with material that makes it light and practical. Avoid walking with a cell phone, that area is not so safe.

Ferreira's Square is a historical heritage located in the center of Fortaleza city. It is named with reference to the pharmacist Boticário Ferreira, a city councilor who reformed and urbanized this space in 1871. It was the scene of literary "Spiritual Bakery" in 1892. Until today this square is the "heart" of Fortaleza as a privileged meeting point of the capital and well known for its time column and a small garden surrounded by a lot of stores.

Disappointing Stay – Not Worth the Price The only good things about this hotel were the location and the food. Worth to mention that the chef cooked special vegetarian dishes for us 🙏 However everything else was a letdown. First, we were shocked to find out that we had to pay extra for pool towels—something that should be a basic service in any decent hotel. Then, checking out was a nightmare with long queues and inefficient staff, making the departure experience stressful. To top it off, our room faced a noisy construction site, completely ruining any chance of relaxation. For the price we paid, we expected much better. Wouldn’t stay here again.

Cultural center
Located on Rua dos Tabajaras near Praia de Iracema in Fortaleza, Brazil, Centro Cultural Belchior is a historic mansion with a rich past. Originally known as Vila Morena and constructed in the 1920s, it has served as a casino, upscale restaurant, and refuge for intellectuals during World War II. In 1995, due to safety concerns, its future was uncertain.
Cultura, diversidade e a beleza da praia juntos em um só lugar. it's a pleasure speak about Centro Cultural Belchior, if you live out of Brazil and stay here in Fortaleza, I can say: Praia de Iracema it's the most important place to discover here, have a lot of information and different people. Nice atmosphere and music.

(Translated by Google) It's a beautiful place. There is the division between "Beira Mar" and "Mucuripe" beaches. I don't recommend it for those looking for a beach to dive into the sea. There is a rock formation there and it is difficult to enter the sea, especially at low tide. It is recommended to enjoy a walk along the sidewalk, which is very well maintained and quite wide, or for those who choose to take pictures. I am posting photos taken there. In addition, those who are at Volta da Jurema are in the heart of the metropolitan beach. Go check it out...

(Translated by Google) I have been a lifelong resident of Montese, and, as a Catholic, I have always considered our church a historical symbol of great importance and benefit to the community. Me, my brothers and cousins studied in Piamarta, and we recognize the value that this institution and the church bring to the neighborhood and that they brought to our lives and our individual formation, always generating a lot of positivity. However, recently, I noticed a change in the events that used to take place in the Piamarta gym and now take place in the church courtyard and square. This has generated unbearable noise pollution for those who live nearby, as in my case, right in front of the church. Here at home, I live with elderly people, and the youngest get up at 5 am to work, study and support their families in a dignified way. Unfortunately, there were more than seven consecutive days of parties in the courtyard, with music at very high volume. I wonder if it were a nightclub, a football game or a steakhouse causing this noise, there would certainly be a reaction of outrage and the necessary measures would be taken. I called the parish office several times, and when I was finally answered, I didn't feel like I was understood. The volume, however, was not reduced. I don't believe this is an isolated case. It is incomprehensible that they do not, for example, make use of the excellent structure of the Piamartina school centers, or that they create their own suitable structure to host parish festivities. Since the church is extremely supported and has a lot of volunteer support. If one person is bothered, it is no longer correct, imagine several. Yesterday, the festivities and surreal noise lasted until 11pm, and we woke up at 7am to the fire department band and extremely loud sound tests. It's unfortunate that we don't even have rest on Sunday. Before, the day of the procession was a wonderful event for us, full of positive energy, which has now been marked by exaggeration, lack of balance, common sense and respect. I sincerely hope that the church will reflect on this situation and hear this complaint as constructive criticism. That they respect the local community as a whole, and that the problem does not worsen further.
