Cathedral

Church
Place of worship
Chester Cathedral, dating back to 1092, is a medieval marvel located on the site of an ancient church and Benedictine Abbey. The cathedral showcases a blend of Norman Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Visitors can explore the interior before ascending the 216-step tower for panoramic views spanning two countries and five counties. Nearby, Watergate Street boasts charming half-timbered houses like Gods Providence House and Leche House.
Chester Cathedral is an unmissable gem in the heart of the city. Unlike many major landmarks, entry to the main cathedral is free, though donations are encouraged, which makes it an exceptional experience at remarkable value. From the moment you step inside, you're enveloped by a deep sense of history and tranquility. It’s a serene escape from the bustle outside, offering space to pause, reflect, and simply take in the beauty. The architecture is breathtaking. A captivating blend of Norman solidity and Gothic elegance unfolds in every corner, from the soaring vaulted ceilings to the radiant stained-glass windows. The craftsmanship is extraordinary, especially the intricately carved choir stalls, which are a true highlight.

Absolutely lovely place that will keep you entertained for an hour ⛪General info: So there's a lot to see & read at this cathedral. The entrance is not big, but noticeable. Upon entrance, you will find a few pamphlets and will be kindly nudged towards a small donation (£5-10 per person is acceptable). Then, you can immediately proceed to the corridors and halls of the cathedral, as well as a big gift shop. It is notable that, while there's not much walking to do, there's much to see & "inhale" the atmosphere of an effectively ancient place. I'll leave it for you to discover 😊 🧹: State of the place: obviously it's an old old building and I think that the administration is doing their best to keep it tidy and relatively organised. Toilets are clean, no foul smells or anything. I would say there's a few random boxes and just "stuff" here and there, but generally it's pretty nice 🤵Service: obviously in a place like this people will be very nice and polite, as they are working for a greater cause. A lot of personnel going back and forward, moving and cleaning stuff. It's nice to see, as it is clear that this place is loved and is being taken care of Honestly? Visit it. Whether you're religious or not, you'll be in awe of this grandiose piece of history called Chester Cathedral ✌️📿

Extraordinary place. Well maintained, very large, beautiful ceilings, glass, mosaics, metalwork, statues and more. Not to opulent (unlike some) but extremely well maintained. Exceptional value for money with a minimum entry price of £5. Pay more of you can as a building of this size and quality takes thousands per day to keep open.

My Visit to Chester Cathedral, Chester Visiting Chester Cathedral was an unforgettable experience — a perfect blend of history, architecture, and serenity right in the heart of the city. The cathedral stands as one of the most magnificent landmarks in Chester, with its stunning Gothic architecture, intricate stained-glass windows, and beautifully carved wooden choir stalls that tell centuries-old stories. As I walked inside, the calm atmosphere instantly stood out. The soaring arches, detailed stonework, and peaceful background music created a sense of timeless beauty. The central nave is breathtaking, and the Lady Chapel and Cloisters are absolute must-sees — especially the peaceful garden courtyard that feels miles away from the bustle outside. I also climbed the Cathedral Tower, which offers panoramic views of Chester’s rooftops, the city walls, and even Wales on a clear day. The staff and volunteers were friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share fascinating details about the cathedral’s Romanesque origins and its role through medieval times. Visitor Tips: • Entry is free, but donations are appreciated. • The Tower Tour and Falconry & Nature Gardens are worth adding to your visit. • Allow at least 1–2 hours to fully explore and enjoy the architecture and history. • There’s a lovely café and gift shop inside for a quiet break. Overall: A must-visit gem in Chester — awe-inspiring, peaceful, and full of heritage. Perfect for history lovers, photographers, and anyone who appreciates timeless beauty.

A warm and welcoming Cathedral. Lots of interesting bits for everyone. Lovely windows, nice choir and beautiful carvings, esp. misericords. Floors are beautiful tiles. Well worth a visit and donation!
Jerry W — Google review
Chester Cathedral is a must-see when visiting the city. The architecture is stunning, with tall ceilings, stained glass, and detailed stonework that reflect its long history. Entry is free, though donations are welcomed, which makes it very accessible. The cloisters and gardens are peaceful and add to the overall experience. There are plenty of small details and historic features to spot as you walk around, and the staff are welcoming and knowledgeable. You don’t need more than an hour or two, but it’s a memorable stop and definitely one of Chester’s highlights.e
Konrad L — Google review
Chester Cathedral is a stunning piece of architecture. I highly recommend to everyone to see it. I would have loved to have seen it inside but unfortunately there was a private event happening, I just wished they had put a sign outside saying so, as hundreds of people making their way in to where you pay only to be told by a member of staff we cant go in and the hundreds trying to go out again against more people coming in was an absolute nightmare as it was a Saturday.
Willows M — Google review
You can easily spend at least 3 hours exploring Chester Cathedral. There’s so much to see—from the beautiful architecture and stained-glass windows to the peaceful gardens and historic rooms. It’s a calm and impressive place, and definitely worth taking your time to enjoy

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Chester Zoo is a renowned destination, home to over 20,000 animals from 400 different species. The zoo's founder aimed to create a space without bars, using natural barriers like ditches and moats. Visitors can explore the various habitats on foot, by monorail, or even by boat. The zoo is dedicated to conservation efforts worldwide. Surrounding Chester are miles of lush countryside, making it an ideal location for weddings with picturesque backdrops for photos.
Staff are excellent and friendly. Plenty to see and do. Be aware that the zoo itself is huge. You will not see everything in one day, so pick the animals you wish to see. Or spread your visit to multiple visits over the year. Annual membership is worth it, especially if you have young children that tire easily. We personally have an8 month old and have visited multiple times. (He loves the fish and penguins) But we see new bits every time we go. Take your time, you can take a packed lunch, though you can get food and ice cream, drinks, tea and coffee around the park. Also their is a small sweet shop on site for those with a sweet tooth. (Bring your wallet for that experience)
Michael C — Google review
This zoo is awesome! It’s big, so give yourself a few hours to explore. The elephants, rhinos, and bears were amazing to see, and I was lucky enough to spot the leopard too. The exhibits are huge and well designed, with plenty of space for the animals but still great views for visitors. Highly recommend!
Alyssa C — Google review
Great day here. The animal enclosures are nice and spacious. It was informative. The butterfly House was very busy with them flying around and the free flying bat house was great. Great to see some species we hadn't seen before. Plenty of refreshment places and toilets.
Vicky D — Google review
Lovely zoo, although entry is on the rather expensive side, you can get them slightly cheaper if you buy online in advance. The zoo is large enough that you can spend the whole day walking around it, with many different enclosures to visit. There are daily feedings and talks that you can watch and listen to, if you time it right.
Daniel F — Google review
I had a lovely visit last week at Chester Zoo. Everywhere you look there is an animal being helped via a breeding program, with information about them near their habitat. The zookeepers are very clearly passionate and caring in their roles.
Dyl — Google review
Awesome zoo, well laid out and so much to see. Animals are clearly well looked after and the whole set up is top quality. Very accessible for those with limited mobility (wheelchair friendly) and notices for those with sensory issues too.
Heather D — Google review
We visited Chester Zoo for a day trip and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience overall. The staff were excellent—friendly, approachable, and always willing to help, which made a real difference throughout the visit. Parking was straightforward, with wide spaces and clear signage, making arrival stress-free. The zoo itself offers a fantastic break for families, with plenty to explore and good facilities for young children. Hiring a trolley proved to be a brilliant option, especially when carrying backpacks or managing tired little ones. That said, there are a few areas that could be improved. The toilets did have a noticeable odour, which detracted slightly from the overall comfort. Free water is only available at the entrance, and it would be a thoughtful gesture to provide additional refill stations around the site, particularly on warmer days. To see all areas in one visit, you may need to keep a brisk pace—so plan ahead if you're hoping for a more relaxed experience. While the range of animals is impressive, we did notice the absence of certain species such as tarantulas, scorpions, and unfortunately no sharks or crocodilian species. Despite these minor drawbacks, Chester Zoo remains a well-organised and enjoyable destination, especially for families. We’d happily return and recommend it—with just a few tweaks, it could easily be a five-star experience.
Panos A — Google review
A brilliant zoo, with so many different animals of varying sizes to see. The keepers are both passionate and knowledgeable about the animals they look after. as are the volunteers. Best to visit over 2 days, so as to ensure you see everything without having to rush.

The Grosvenor Museum in Chester is a captivating destination that showcases the city's rich history, art, silver heritage, and natural history. Established in 1885 through a generous donation by the 1st Duke of Westminster, the museum features galleries dedicated to local history and Cheshire's natural history, along with temporary exhibitions. Visitors can delve into Chester's pre-Roman roots and explore its social history at the Museums Period House located at 20 Castle Street.
I have not been here before, so we visited in August 2024. Chester has so much Roman history. The museum is housed in a fabulous building. Pop in for a visit, all the usual facilities onsite.
Lynn ( — Google review
On a first visit in July 2024, with my family. Wow, what an amazing place. Well, it's worth a visit if you are in the area. Firstly, this is free, with a recommended donation. There is so much information and exhibits crammed into every available space. There is something for everyone. Historical people, building of the area with Roman encampments, etc... lots of art and reconstructions of period housing. There are lots of stairs, and for some sections, there is a lift available for folks with reduced mobility. This will give you access to the upper ground floor and down into the visitor shop and cafe out at the back of the building. It is possible that you may encounter real Roman soldiers on parade...well, school children dressed up on their field trips. A few seats dotted around to take the weight off. A very informative video at the start and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. I surprised myself how long I stayed as it was so interesting.

Great Museum, really Small but have a complete Stone collection and a fantastic silver room
Yanko — Google review
The galleries in Chester dedicated to local history and Cheshire’s natural history are an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in learning more about the area’s rich past and diverse environment. Housed within the Grosvenor Museum, they offer a fascinating journey through centuries of heritage, culture, and discovery. The local history galleries bring Chester’s story vividly to life, from its Roman origins through medieval times and into the modern day. Thoughtfully arranged displays, artefacts, and reconstructions help you step back in time and imagine what life was like for the people who shaped the city. Each section is engaging and provides just the right amount of detail, making it accessible for all ages. Equally impressive is the Cheshire natural history collection. With displays covering the region’s landscapes, geology, flora, and fauna, these galleries showcase the incredible variety of the local environment. From the River Dee to Delamere Forest, it’s a celebration of the natural world that surrounds the city, with specimens and interactive features that bring the subject to life. Adding even more appeal are the regular temporary exhibitions. These are always well-curated and provide fresh perspectives, meaning each visit offers something new. Combined with the permanent collections, they make the museum a place worth returning to again and again. Altogether, these galleries provide an inspiring and enjoyable experience, blending history, nature, and culture in the heart of Chester.

What a wonderful museum experience this was! Really interesting displays, some small interactive pieces, and a lovely mix of Roman, Chester and UK history. Would 100% recommend for a visit to Chester. It's a free museum but we both gave a donation to support since it was so enjoy.

The Eastgate Clock, a Victorian turret clock situated above a Georgian arch, is a historic landmark in Chester. Erected in 1899 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, it has become an iconic symbol of the city. Despite its age, the clock stands as a testament to Chester's rich history, with the original gateway dating back to Roman times.
Definitely go to visit if you are in Chester. This is a beautiful preserved feature, in the centre of the city. You can climb up onto the wall and go for a stroll with amazing views of the city and stumble across other landmarks around the city.
Jamie H — Google review
The Eastgate Clock Tower in Chester is a truly captivating piece of Victorian architecture and a must-see landmark in the city. Nestled at the entrance of Eastgate Street, it immediately draws your eye with its ornate design and impressive clock face. Built in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, the tower beautifully captures the elegance and craftsmanship of the period. What makes the Eastgate Clock Tower special is not just its historical significance but also its picturesque setting. It is the perfect spot for photos, with the historic city walls and charming streets serving as a stunning backdrop. Visiting the tower feels like stepping back in time, giving you a glimpse of Chester’s rich heritage.
Hanna S — Google review
As someone from Chester, I’m biased in my love of Eastgate Clock, but it is the best landmark in the city. Beautiful from whichever angle you take a photo, the view from the clock are glorious too. It’s best enjoyed as part of a walk around the Roman Walls that encircle the city. My old geography teacher used to say it’s the second most photographed clock in the world. Not sure if that’s true, but I do love taking photos of it!
Tom S — Google review
A visit to Chester isn't complete without a walk of the historic walls which are the most complete left in the country. Fantastic vantage points along most of it's route in and above the rooftops.
Alexander B — Google review
Stunning views a must visit landmark. This is an incredible victorian masterpiece. The bridge it's upon has an amazing view, too. No disabled acbut you can view it from street level.

The Eastgate Clock, bult on the City wall at the City centre of Chester, is an attractive iconic picturesque that you must visit. The city wall can be called back to ancient history when the Roman ruled England. The wall first bult in the Eastgate on site of the Roman Fortress gateway. Just walking up the wall and on its top, people will have a bird -eye view of the busines hub of the City. Overthere, you can take brilliant photos whilst the Sun shines on bronze Clock. It is amazing! This Clock was bult in 1899, two years after Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. This Clock was originally manually wound.

A must-see in Chester. Beautifully preserved and working. I'd advise taking it in as part of the city walls walk. Also on display in the market is a lego design of it too.

Chester Roman blends historic charm with modern elegance, right by the East Gate Clock. A prime spot, buzzing with tourists and offering a vibrant, lively atmosphere. Minutes from Chester Station and the iconic city landmark. Stroll along the Chester Walls and soak in the beautiful surroundings. A perfect location for both short visits and longer stays, full of character and energy.

Chester Racecourse, established in 1539, holds the title of being the oldest racecourse still in operation globally. The one-mile course attracts visitors from around the world to witness horses navigating its tight turns. Over time, the racecourse has expanded to include various facilities such as a restaurant serving delectable treats and an extensive wine collection. With over 15 race meets each season between May and September, it's a perfect family day out or a fun-filled spectacle with friends.
We had such a lovely time in the gin garden. The service was great. The food was decent and the atmosphere was buzzing. It was too busy to get to the actual racecourse but we did see it in the giant screens. And enjoyed seeing each horse before the races. Great day out.

Amazing experience at the White Horse at the weekend (31st May 2025) for a hospitality experience. Summer was our waitress for the day and she was so attentive literally nothing was too much trouble. She was on it with drinks orders and even topping up our ice and water as it was a warm day. She definitely deserves some recognition as this level of service for her age is normally non existent. She has definitely made us want to visit again. Food was delicious too, excellent!

Rip-off Chester. My wife and I visited last Friday, as I needed to tick the course off. The racing was nothing special, 3 class 4 races and 5 class 5 races. When I checked the ticket prices 2 weeks before the meeting I couldn't believe that they were asking £32 for a Tattersalls ticket and £17 for the Roodee enclosure (silver ring). Although excessive I was going to get the Tatts tickets. However, when I came to book them a few days later(10 days prior to the meeting) the prices had increased to £39 and £20. Apparently they operate dynamic pricing. What a joke! There was no way I was going to pay £39 each for rubbish racing. I'm not sure I've ever paid that for Group 1 meetings before, other than Royal Ascot and the Cheltenham festival. We, therefore, bought tickets for the Roodee enclosure (well done Chester, you just lost yourselves £24 - £40 instead of £64). Once in the course you are then met with your next rip off, £5 for a racecard - why? Followed by the usual racecourse beer prices plus a bit more as it's Chester, £6.45 to £7.95 for a pint. If you want a cup of tea it's £3.50. Looking across to Tatts I couldn't see any extra facilities that would have justified paying an additional £19 per ticket. This racecourse really does have serious delusions of grandeur. Ascot it is not! Bearing in mind the view from the road and the fact that there is a pub (The Architect) with a huge garden a few yards away, I would suggest saving your entrance fee and having a beer in the pub. By the way the photos that I have posted are from a long way along the road on the way to the Little Roodee car park (recommended - £5 for 6 hours). You can get a far better view of the course and big screen just up the road. I, for one, am certainly glad that I never have to return to this course again.

Had an issue whilst in the queue for the county enclosure at the May Meeting. Our group were approached and told "you won't get in because you're not wearing a tie" from a security person. Overall slightly disappointing experience

Heritage building
Chester Roman Amphitheatre is the largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, dating back to 1st century AD. It was used for military training, executions, and entertainment, with a capacity of about 7,000 spectators. The site was discovered in the 1950s after being hidden beneath buildings for 2,000 years. Today, visitors can explore the ruins for free and witness military re-enactments during summer.
Nice area with plaques about explaining the history of the area around and about the Amphitheater itself. Has seats around the area where you can sit and relax. It is a nice stop off place to visit if wandering around Chester.
Coy — Google review
The Chester Roman Amphitheater is a fascinating historical site offering a glimpse into Roman Britain’s past. Though only partially excavated, its scale and interpretation boards help visualize ancient spectacles. The peaceful setting contrasts its dramatic history, making it an intriguing and educational stop for history lovers exploring Chester’s rich heritage.
Dhibin S — Google review
Chester Roman seamlessly blends historic charm with modern design. Perfectly located near Chester Station and the iconic Chester Wall. Immaculately kept, offering a tranquil retreat with a touch of class. Enjoy a scenic walk around the wall, just moments away. An ideal spot for both short stays and long-term relaxation.
Ayub A — Google review
There's not much of the amphitheatre to see butif you go to the Grosnevor muesum you can see a more detailed pictures and models of what it would have looked like
Lesley A — Google review
The amphitheatre is one of the best historical sites in Chester. Even though it’s only half excavated, you get a sense if the size and grandeur it once held in its Roman heyday. Road running behind is annoying, as is the derelict Dee House that covers the other half, but it’s still a must see in Chester!
Tom S — Google review
It's free and well maintained. It has a large drop off in the lawned area, so be careful. It is well worth visiting as part of a larger tour Unfortunately, some of the area is not well preserved as past generations have had large projects here and nearby. It's worth bringing a coffee or lunch to absorb the atmosphere. You never know you nay hear a ghostly lion roar of the sound of a legionary shouting orders, ha ha.
David N — Google review
Hidden gem of a historical find. We came to Chester to see the Tudor style buildings and found this quite by accident. Apparently, at one point the Romans wanted Chester to be the capitol of Britannia, rather than Londinium. However, those pesky Scots (my ancestors) to the north were a quarrelsome bunch that took issue with being conquered, so the Romans decided to alter their plans. But not before they had constructed this huge coliseum. They do like their spectacles after all. Luckily for us, after the Romans abandoned the area, the arena was filled in by erosion and trash, which actually managed to preserve much of the structure, up until 1929. Then it was rediscovered and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
Joe M — Google review
An amazing remnant of Roman Britain in the middle of a roundabout near Chester City Centre ! The largest amphitheatre in Britain with some similarities in design to the one in Pompeii. Well preserved with seating and a pleasant area to sit and relax. Given the buildings around it, it's amazing it still exists in any form. Worth a visit.

Chester City Walls are a historic marvel, offering a 2-mile-long walkway with well-preserved Roman and Medieval fortifications. The walls, originally built in 80 AD to defend the city, now provide an excellent vantage point for panoramic views of Chester and its surroundings. Visitors can access the walls through several gates and towers, including Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate, and Bridgegate.
The full circuit is about 2 miles (3.2 km) and is open to the public as a scenic walking route. • Offers elevated views over the city’s most famous landmarks, including: • Chester Cathedral • The Roman Amphitheatre • The River Dee • Eastgate Clock (one of the most photographed clocks in the UK) • The walk is lined with historic towers, ancient gates, and interpretive signs explaining their history.
AineK J — Google review
A great way to get your bearings around the city centre the walls stretch for over two miles and are amongst the most intact in the UK. You have views of the River Dee…. the Roman garden… famous clock tower …the Chester Canal and Cathedral all from the raised walkway

Some lovely views from up the city walls Gotta say that the state of the walls is pretty good for ancient architecture. Also if I'm correct it was restored in 2015 which made it more safe and durable Anyways it's free so go see them!! 😉

My Stroll Through Chester Walls, Chester Walking along the Chester City Walls was like stepping back in time through layers of English history. These ancient Roman and medieval fortifications encircle the heart of Chester, offering some of the best panoramic views of the city — from the magnificent Chester Cathedral to the River Dee and the charming old streets lined with Tudor-style buildings. The entire walk is around 2 miles (3.2 km) long, and I loved how every section had its own story — the Eastgate Clock, the Northgate, and the Water Tower all stand as reminders of centuries past. The walls are beautifully maintained, and there are plenty of spots to stop for photos or just take in the view. I particularly enjoyed walking during the late afternoon when the golden light made the sandstone glow. It’s an easy and peaceful walk suitable for all ages, with clear signboards and multiple entry points. I recommend starting near Eastgate Clock and circling around at a relaxed pace — it takes about an hour if you pause to explore along the way. Visitor Tips: • Wear comfortable walking shoes — the path can be uneven in places. • Early morning or late afternoon walks are best for fewer crowds and lovely light. • Don’t miss the view of the Roman Amphitheatre and Chester Racecourse from the walls. • Entry is free, and the experience feels like a journey through living history. Overall: A must-do experience in Chester — peaceful, scenic, and rich in heritage.

Stunning views and well maintained. They fit in well with their surroundings and a brilliant feature to walk on and be part of experiencing Chester’s history. Loved Chester!!

The Chester city walls are a breathtaking marvel of medieval engineering and historical preservation. As you walk along the ancient ramparts, you're transported back in time, surrounded by the rich tapestry of history and craftsmanship. The walls beautifully encircle the city, their sturdy stones and well-preserved towers creating a striking contrast against the modern skyline. The iconic Eastgate Clock, perched atop the entrance, adds a charming touch of elegance and serves as a stunning focal point.
Hanna S — Google review
Walked all the way around and it is free. Lots of viewing points, especially over the town and river. Gentle walk 1½ hours
Tiddy I — Google review
I love walking the full length of the city walls when I'm in Chester. The 2-mile long circuit, with its gates, medieval towers and viewpoints, is virtually unbroken - though it does descend to street level in places - and it's open all year. Walking at a leisurely pace with frequent stops at points of interest, it takes me about two hours to go all the way round. There are many entry points, but although wheelchair users and people with prams can access the walls in a few places, they would find it impossible to do the full circuit because of uneven stretches and steps. Dogs are welcome, but they have to be on a lead. The best of what Chester has to offer can be seen and easily accessed from the walls: the cathedral, castle, Roman amphitheatre, canal towpath, River Dee boat landings, racecourse, and city centre shops. Some great views, not only of Chester but also of the surrounding countryside and Welsh hills. I find the history on the information boards fascinating. It's hard to imagine that ocean-going sailing ships used to dock right outside the city gates! There are even a couple of shops on the walls, and a unique little café next to the Eastgate Clock that I thoroughly recommend! Walking the city walls is an enjoyable way to get to know and find your way around Chester!

Storyhouse is a versatile venue in Chester, England, offering a library, theatre, cinema, and cultural events alongside a modern restaurant. It's the cultural and creative heart of Chester with an array of entertainment options for children. The multi-award-winning 37m theatre hosts family-friendly films while the sprawling library features special spaces like The Den and The Storytelling Room filled with kids' favorite books. Additionally, Storyhouse offers regular arts and crafts activities as well as storytelling sessions for kids.
I love Storyhouse as a customer who uses the cafe regularly (the food is delicious and staff friendly!), the library with my daughter and theatre/cinema. I also hold most of my in-person client meetings there as a wedding photographer and just a few weeks ago I had the honour of photographing the first marriage at The Storyhouse! It was incredible. They got married the cinema and had their reception upstairs in the Garret Bar and adjoining theatre. The staff were so attentive and on the ball and everything ran very smoothly on the day. They also allowed me to visit in advance to scope out the lighting and space ahead of Rebecca and Dylan's wedding day. From a photography point of view the building is very intriguing and provides so many opportunities for creative portraits, with lots of angles and natural light as well as famous quotes dotted around. Couples who opt to have their wedding at the Storyhouse can also have their names in lights above the entrance. If you're looking for a unique, non-traditional venue to host your wedding then this could be the place!

Been my favourite place to come to for a long time, good coffee, free chargers, if you get a library card you can use their computers for free for an hour which is amazing! Also so many good books, been to a few shows there and they always blow me away, the performers are amazing. Plus so many activities and events happening all the time! Never been to one myself but i’ve heard from friends that they are really good for meeting new people and for a general good time. Highly recommend!!

Our second experience visiting the Storyhouse, seeing the comedian Josh Jones on 19/09/25. The Storyhouse is a great venue with multiple floors, bars and a large library. Today we were in the Garret Theatre, a smaller theatre than the others but can still hold many people. There is a ok sized bar just before you enter, but the poor member of staff was on her own under a lot of pressure with a long line. There was no visibly displayed menu so she has to tell numerous people what was available. The Kitchen has lots of available seating. I ordered a hot chocolate after our show ended and the staff were nice, visibly displayed menus. Every table has a QR code to order online and then a pickup point is very clearly signed on the end of the bar. The hot chocolate was great and decently priced. Parking is available down the road at New Market.

AVOID the Kitchen! Storyhouse is an amazing place. Unfortunately the kitcgen offers the most inefficient service ever. It took them 50 minutes to bring us 2x kids meal and 2x paninis, on a relatively busy Sunday. Food is okay, but the srrvice and the cleanliness is far from good standards.

Go here a lot for shows but last week I noticed the downstairs toilets have become ‘gender neutral’ personally I felt uncomfortable so I didn’t go to the loo and my husband who went later didn’t go either as there were 3 women in there so he felt awkward. I don’t want to pee in front of other men. If there was 1 toilet fine but it’s 3 cubicles in a small space - not for me thanks

I photographed a wedding at Storyhouse back in April and WOW! What a place. The staff were incredible at making Becky & John's wedding day extra special. The couple had quite an alternative day, featuring a humanist ceremony in the theatre space, stormtroopers, and a Mario Kart tournament on the big screen. They then had the party in the same room in with a live band in the evening. Everything ran smoothly, and the staff could not have been more helpful. I would highly recommend this place for a non-traditional wedding celebration. The building is also an amazing community space, with theatre, library, cinema, cafe and more.... and I can't wait to come back. I also enjoyed a coffee and cake in the cafe - the vegan options were fantastic. The also got to partake in the wedding food and it was sooo good! Here are a few photo highlights of their day. The Chester Roman Gardens exhibit the remnants of an ancient Roman fortress, including columns and other support structures from a bathhouse and assembly hall. The gardens are situated close to the city walls, making them easy to visit.
Visited on a quiet Sunday morning and had a walk through this stunning garden. Intriguing to read about the history of Chester through the boards on show. Not a particularly large garden in any sense, but made for a nice addition to any walk around Chester - with access to the wall, should you want to explore that walk as well.

This is an interesting collection of Roman ruins collected in this garden from other locations across the city. As a result, I was a bit disappointed that this isn't an original Roman garden. Nevertheless, I appreciate the fact all of these ruins have been brought together in one place to be enjoyed by visitors. Entry is free and the site appears accessible to all mobility levels. It's certainly worthwhile visiting if you have any interest in Roman history.

The Roman Gardens in Chester offer a serene and historically rich experience, nestled along the city’s ancient walls. This well-maintained green space showcases impressive archaeological remnants, including reconstructed hypocausts and Roman columns, thoughtfully arranged to evoke the grandeur of Chester’s past. Informative plaques provide clear context, enhancing the educational value without overwhelming visitors. The gardens’ tranquil atmosphere, complemented by vibrant flowerbeds and shaded pathways, invites quiet reflection, making it an ideal spot for history enthusiasts and casual strollers alike.

A surprisingly tranquil and well-maintained spot right in the heart of Chester! The Roman Gardens offer a peaceful escape from the bustling city streets, with a lovely collection of Roman columns and stonework set amongst beautiful greenery. It’s not a huge site, but it’s a perfect place to sit for a few minutes, appreciate the history, and soak up the atmosphere. It's a great spot for history buffs and anyone looking for a quiet moment. Plus, it's free to enter! Highly recommend combining a visit here with a walk along the city walls.

My Visit to Chester Roman Gardens, Chester The Chester Roman Gardens are a peaceful and fascinating spot just a short walk from the city walls and the Roman Amphitheatre. This small but beautifully maintained garden feels like stepping back into ancient history, surrounded by remnants of Chester’s Roman past. I loved how the gardens combine archaeological ruins with a tranquil green space. Scattered throughout are original and reconstructed pieces from the Roman bathhouses, columns, and mosaic floors, all thoughtfully arranged with informative plaques explaining their origins. Walking through, you can easily imagine what life was like in Roman Chester nearly 2,000 years ago. The setting is calm and picturesque, with benches and flower beds blending perfectly with the old stone fragments. It’s an ideal place to pause, rest, and soak in some history after exploring the nearby city walls. The view of the River Dee and Old City Wall from the gardens makes it even more scenic. Visitor Tips: • Entry is free, and it’s open year-round. • Combine your visit with the Roman Amphitheatre and City Walls walk — they’re all next to each other. • Visit in the morning or late afternoon for soft lighting and fewer crowds. • Perfect for history enthusiasts, photographers, or anyone looking for a quiet break in nature. Overall: A hidden gem in Chester — peaceful, educational, and full of Roman charm. A lovely blend of history and greenery in the heart of the city.

Grosvenor Park is a charming Victorian park located on the north bank of the Dee River, generously granted to Chester by Richard Grosvenor. Designed by Edward Kemp, it boasts regimented lawns, flowerbeds, and picturesque elements like a stone arch and Jacobs Well drinking fountain. This 20-acre park offers romantic strolls with views of formal avenues lined with trees and large sweeping lawns surrounded by ornamental shrub beds and statues.
A lovely, long park ideal for a family day out. It features playgrounds for children, a fun miniature railway, and plenty of seating areas to relax. The atmosphere is clean and pleasant. Toilets and cafés are available, and the blooming flowers add extra beauty to the park’s peaceful surroundings.

The Cheshire Military Museum, located in Chester Castle, offers an immersive journey through the military history of the region and its Cheshire Regiment. From 17th-century conflicts to modern-day armed forces, the museum showcases interactive displays depicting the exploits of four regiments associated with Cheshire. Visitors can explore a diverse range of exhibits including an extensive medal collection, explanations of army ranks and terminology, as well as immersive scenes from recent conflicts like the Malayan Jungle and Northern Ireland.
This was a brilliant museum to visit, tracking the history of the Cheshire regiment throughout time! Old uniforms and accessories are shown, alongside the objects once held by military members. The models of people across different areas are well crafted, accompanied by ones of the settings too!

A friendly local museum based on the Cheshire regiment, which takes you through local and national history. There are exhibits from the German side of World War Two which I do think is appropriate in this type of setting- they should be shown so that people can see them for themselves.

Visited today and was welcomed by friendly and smiley staff, which is always a pleasure. Was totally impressed at how much the museum had on display, even tanks and canons! There was no shortage of information. So much to see and read about. Absolutely loved the figures. A great way to really picture how soldiers lived and worked. Totally worth a family ticket of just £10.00 to see all of this. A great experience and would highly recommend!

We visited here with our 9 year old son, it's not a massive museum, but we spent 90 minutes here, which could've been longer if we didn't have to meet some friends for lunch. The collection covers a wide period of military history, with plenty of information about the exhibits. The medal collection is as extensive as it is stunning, is well displayed and accessable and has the names of the original owners who were awarded the medals which is a really nice touch as some museums don't do this. Lots of historic weapons on display, as well as some more modern types, some fantastic miniature scenes (see my pictures), a few video screens playing content as well as loads of other memorabilia. For the price, it's well worth a visit if you're interested in the subject.

When in Cheshire, a visit to the Parish Church of St John the Baptist in Chester is a must. This Anglican church, built from sandstone and dating back to the 11th century, boasts stunning architecture and adjacent ruins that add to its allure. The church, also known as St. John the Baptist's Church, is an active Anglican parish church within the diocese of Chester and has been designated as a National Heritage site.
Stumbled across this amazing place on our recent visit to Chester. Such a beautiful and welcoming place to visit and have a cup of tea. Volunteers are so friendly and very knowledgeable about the church and it's fascinating history. We returned to attend Sunday Evensong and could not have been made to feel more welcome. Cannot recommend a visit here highly enough!

Founded in 689 AD by Aethelred King of Mercia. Raised to the status of Cathedral in 1075. The grand organ was used at the coronation of Queen Victoria in Westminster Abbey in June 1838. St John's was used as a headquarters and gun battery by Parliamentary troops during the Civil War. There is so much history on display in this beautiful church. There is also a fantastic cafe and lots of secondhand books for sale. A beautiful quiet space to spend some time and take in the history.

We were unable to go inside, as we arrived too late, but we were free to walk the grounds. Remarkably well preserved for a building that is over 1300 years old.

The original cathedral which is in my view a more enjoyable place to visit than the present cathedral. It is small and intimate and on a human scale, staffed by helpful volunteers and with a small and reasonably priced cafe offering a basis menu. It is worth visiting prior to visiting it's austere and impersonal, albeit impressive, replacement. School parties welcome. A Spanish group were entering as we left.

Tracked this church down because my partner's 5th time grandparents were married here in the 1700's. I really liked the way the ruins/remnants of the old church were maintained as part of the current church. The stained glass was beautiful on this partly sunny day. Very nice staff.

The Deva Roman Experience in Chester offers a captivating journey into the ancient world of Roman Britain. Visitors can explore the heart of one of the largest legionary citadels, immersing themselves in the sights, smells, and sounds of Chester over 2000 years ago through distinctive reconstructions.
We enjoyed our visit as a weekend activity with the kids. It's under 10 minutes from the large Linenhall car park and we didn't book tickets in advance (though you can if you want to be certain of a place). It's a very lively and interactive trip back in time with some interesting characters to meet. It definitely kept the kids attention throughout! After the main tour, there's a chance to explore some excavations going back to Roman times, and there was a fun dressing-up area. The staff were all great and very pleasant. There are toilets but no cafe (though plenty of eateries a few minutes walk away in the city centre). It took us around 2 hours to do the tour and exhibits, my only criticism was the price was a little high for a family of four. Otherwise highly recommended as a very interactive and memorable place to visit.
Tim J — Google review
Highly recommend coming here! What a great interactive experience. Follow the history of Chester and the Romans, with talks, video, and actual Roman archaeological ruins. Kids will absolutely love it, although rowing to get to the Fort at the start will hurt your shoulders 🤣 Watch for the Kraken.... If you book this and Sick to Death (also highly recommended), together it works out a lot cheaper.

This was a great little exhibit. Definitely worth a visit, especially with kids. The staff were very enthusiastic and entertaining. Not sure if they usually do larger mixed groups but we went just as the 2 of us and we were immediately taken through on a tour on our own which was great, and despite the guide presenting to just us 2 adults, his enthusiasm was great. Good price, interesting facts and definitely worth a visit. Took about an hour but could take longer if you choose.
James D — Google review
We had a great family visit to Deva today while visiting Chester. We really appreciated the warm welcome and the reasonable entry price. The 45 minute tour/ experience was a great introduction to the Romans, delivered by a fun guide who was skilled at interacting with visitors of all ages. We stayed to look for longer at the archaeological dig area. The people make this place - everyone was so entertaining and friendly!
Vicky G — Google review
Very fascinating tour through roman chester in this great exhibition. The tour guide (archaeologist) was extremely knowledgeable and fun. Tours run hourly (I think), so so may be worth booking in advance if needed although we booked ours on the day and came back 45 minutes later for it after a walk around the nearby shopping area. Great value for money and the kids will enjoy it too, especially at the end with the hands on activities area. It wasn't very well sign posted so hopefully they manage to get some street signage on the main shopping street next to it ensuring more visited visitors find this gem.

Wow! We had the most amazing time for my Roman-Total-Wars-obsessed dad’s 54th birthday! Honestly such a memorable experience and the staff (particularly Francesca and Joe!) were absolutely fantastic! The experience was so informative, had hilarious live actors, and really REALLY made us laugh! Best memory is my dad putting on full Roman armour and fighting a gladiator (he absolutely bollocked Gladiator Atlas 1-v1!). I would definitely recommend the Deva Roman Experience. It was also a lovely touch that this was specific to the history of Chester, which my father is now officially part of! Great for families and I honestly cannot praise the incredible staff enough! Great value for money! Wish I could rate this even higher!!

Castle
Chester Castle, located on the banks of the River Dee, has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Originally established by William the Conqueror in 1070, it served as a military headquarters during various campaigns and was later used by Lord John Byron during the English Civil War. Although rebuilt in the 19th century, it still retains some original features. The castle may appear modest in size when viewed from the city walls, but its historical significance is undeniable.
Well worth a visit, especially for special events, but note the restricted opening times, and at weekends only. The Agricola tower with its ancient frescos in the chapel, is really interesting when a volunteer guide can point things out to you, plus there's a good view from the top.

Good. The volunteers are really lovely and informative. It appears to be free all of the time (don't even have to show your EH card). It's a fairly small attraction and gets busy. Check the English Heritage website for opening times as it doesn't always appear to be open during the week.

It’s perfect for both kids and adults – the children were thrilled by the interactive areas and play zones, while we loved learning about the conservation work and seeing the animals up close. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the facilities were clean. We especially enjoyed the tropical house and the elephants – absolutely breathtaking! We’ll definitely be back to explore the parts we missed. Highly recommend Chester Zoo to anyone looking for a fun, educational, and memorable day out. Worth every penny! 🐘🦒🌿

I visited Sick to Death in Chester with my 8-year-old daughter. Although she was a bit scared at first, the exhibition turned out to be very educational and engaging. It’s a unique way to learn about the history of medicine, diseases, and how people used to live and treat illness in the past. The experience is well designed for both kids and adults. The displays are interactive and informative. The entry price is very reasonable – £8 for adults and £4.50 for children. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Chester!
GabrielaSVK — Google review
£8 for an adult, can go through the place within 15 to 20 minutes, discount for students with student card. Place is small and very quickly gets boring. Perhaps young kids might enjoy this I certainly didn't. No easy parking nearby. A few pubs nearby to drown your sorrows. Can't recommend.
B S — Google review
Fantastic! We absolutely loved it! From the quirky little shop in the entrance & exit to mounds of facts & interactive pieces. It’s not very big but it’s packed with interesting information. Watch out for the plague doctor wandering around! Fantastic photo opportunities! The staff & quirky and friendly. With my 10 year old, we took around 1hour & 45minutes. Avoiding the sexual content. The only negative I have is that, you don’t have a booking slot so you only get a brief time to read & explore before the next people come in behind you which can make you feel rushed. It’s cost £8 per adult & £4.50 for a child with student rates too. I’m not sure it would be wheelchair friendly, there are a few steps at the front. I would check before hand. It’s in the city centre so lots of parking but are some quite expensive. Absolutely worth a visit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Informative and fun, lots of great interactive activities. Need to replace tired props, missing props and the UV writing has worn away and needs replaced. We enjoyed our visit until the museum became over run by young children and families, it became difficult to focus on reading the information or getting near props or activities. Recommend limiting the amount of children at any one time in the museum as it ruined the last 1/2 of the experience for us.

All I can say is.....Wow, from the second we entered it was astonishing. The gentleman at the door was very comical and made the start of the self-tour really fun. Loved exploring the hidden items ( you will have to visit to find that bit out) From guessing the weight to smelling the intriguing jars, to playing with the corpses heart ❤️ Would definitely recommend you spend an hour or two exploring Sick to Death

Really enjoyed this exhibition. Lots of interesting, and gory information about medicine and surgery throughout history. Lots of activities for kids to do. Not too expensive either.

We are so many years visiting museums in the UK everyone have some unique experiences or stories but this one’s a bit different because it is starting in the beginning human hygiene history and surgery, busy place I understand why 🫶🏻highly recommended but not suitable for small children 🧒

Chester Market, awarded the best small indoor market at the Great British Market Awards 2020, offers a diverse range of unique and traditional stalls not commonly found on the high street. The market also features a central dining area perfect for people-watching and an array of delicious food options. Vinological, an independent wine merchant and bar within the market, provides high-quality wines by the glass or bottle.
We walked in not expecting too much as we have been to many food markets in the UK (and Europe) but it is a really beautiful space. Lots of options to choose from and a lovely family friendly atmosphere (5pm on a Tuesday). We didn't try any food this time but bought two drinks from the main bar and they were great.

I left Chester for a job for almost 1.5 years and I have always missed this place, their environment and food has never let me down. Highly recommend for a visit!

It's actually a nice vibrant area, but unfortunately only a handful a market stalls. The large area inside consists of eating places, I personally found it extremely crowded and load with the noise making hard to have a conversation. Not a lot can very done to address this as its working as its busy. But personally just a bit to loud for me.

Fantastic space in Chester. Frequent live music and performances on the stage in front of plenty of seating. Huge variety of food and drink available and all that we tried was very nice. Good to be able to choose different cuisines at the same time and mix and match! We went back three times over the weekend as it was such a nice atmosphere! 😁😁😁

A brilliant market. Clean and vibrant. Plenty of places to eat. Also many different market stalls to buy a gift or something you want for yourself. Shall definitely be visiting again. Purchased some oatmeal dog shampoo for my Boston Terrier Vincent. Gave him a shower with this product. I'd like to thank the lady who sold me it... Thank you... 👍 It got rid of his dandruff....👍👍

We were visiting Chester and this was recommended to us. Have to say, it's a fantastic set up!! A lot of places could learn a thing or two. We were there on Friday night. There was a guy playing and singing. He was brilliant. The place has so many good places to eat and drink. Very reasonably priced! Very dog friendly too!

You can enjoy lots of different types of food! Everything other people were eating looked really tasty. There are family box seats and high chairs for babies, so it was the perfect place for us to have lunch with our two-year-old twins!

Roman Tours in Chester offer an immersive experience led by authentic Roman soldiers, providing insights into the 2,000-year-old Deva fortress and life in the Roman army. The tours are based on research by top military experts, offering a behind-the-scenes look at key sites. Additionally, the company also offers Medieval Tours focusing on Chester in the 15th century under Henry IV's rule.
We had an absolutely fantastic Roman tour in Chester! The 90-minute tour flew by, thanks to our brilliant guide, who was a historian specialising in the Roman period — his knowledge and passion really shone through. We got to see some incredible Roman sites that aren’t normally open to the public, which made the experience feel even more special. The guide kept everyone engaged with fascinating facts and stories, making sure kids of all ages stayed interested and entertained. It was a genuinely enjoyable and informative experience, well worth the cost. Highly recommended.
Paul — Google review
We really enjoyed our tour, it was interesting and fun. Our guide whose name I did not get was so good with all the children on the tour and kept us adults engaged too. Was fascinating to learn more about Roman Chester such a different way to see the city.

My dad booked a private tour for my birthday, and it was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide was Sextus (he had three names but I can’t remember the other two) who was so knowledgeable and interesting. You can tell he’s really passionate about the history of Chester, and made the tour so fun. I had the best time, and would definitely recommend the Roman Tours!

Our guide Gaius was very knowledgeable, engaging and friendly. Highly recommend - informative and interesting, you will see Chester in a new light after the tour!

We were the only people booked on this tour and so ended up with a private tour for two! Julius was an excellent guide, extremely insightful and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed exploring parts of Chester we didn’t know existed. Absolutely brilliant and highly recommended.

Our guide explained that chester had been continually occupied for 2000 years so lots had been lost to time. Through our soldiers excellent knowledge and narrative we were able to envision a great deal. I learnt a lot and my nine year old who had been studying the Romans loved it. Our tour ran over by around 20mins mainly due to the soldiers brilliant interaction with the children. Our soldier Attius Caler patiently answered their questions with detail and enthusiasm. Chesters sreets are old and many are cobbled, even so I managed to keep up with the tour with my son in his disability buggy. You will need a hat if it is sunny.

Had a really great tour this morning and we learned a lot! Was great to see another side to the city and really enjoyed the sites. Would highly recommend to learn about the Roman ways and some stuff still existing today. Thank you “ugly” for the tour and the wealth of knowledge! 😊

Chester Cathedral Falconry and Nature Gardens is a captivating attraction located in the northeast corner of the city walls. Visitors can enjoy flying displays and hands-on experiences with various birds of prey, including owls, hawks, falcons, and even a mischievous vulture named Tinks. Expert handlers provide fascinating insights into the behavior and diet of these magnificent creatures. The stunning gardens serve as a backdrop for spectacular aerial displays, allowing visitors to observe these majestic birds up close.
Arrived a little late in the afternoon, so missed the last afternoon display. The staff were lovely, very informative and kept us entertained with the snake and a ferret, and some of the birds . We were lucky with the weather, a sunny afternoon. They have a play area with a sand pit. The little hut where you pay entrance fee serves hot drinks, sweets, ice creams etc. There are plenty of picnic benches and tables in a nice area. Toilet facilities are nearby. I think next time we go we'll go earlier hoping to see a display. Lovely place away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, yet only 5 minutes away from town hall.
Sue M — Google review
This place is great. The only falconry centre I know where you can pretty much point at a bird and before you know it you're holding it. There's other animals to hold too such as snakes, ferret's, turtles and much more. The shows are great and very hands on. All this for £15 for a family of four. Staff are so friendly and knowledgeable and can answer pretty much anything you ask relating to the animals they have. Set in the grounds of Chester cathedral, this is one of those hidden gems you must visit when in Chester. A truly well deserved 5 stars.

A little heavenly sanctuary smack bang in the middle of the city centre. Kids were entertained, and there was plenty of space for them to play and run around. We enjoyed it.
Willias 0 — Google review
The immense weight of the vulture on my arm left me completely stunned, although what hit me most were the beautiful shiny feathers under the vulture's wings. The visit at the falconry centre was one of the most fascinating places I have visited. The centre provides an opportunity to engage with some of nature's most beautiful predatory birds and learn about their adaptations and skills. With life like demonstrations and knowledgeable guides it can be an educational and enjoyable way to spend the day. The centre is located within Chester's Cathedral in the the heart of the city centre. It's a perfect location to enjoy a day out with family and friends. Not only can you find out more about these amazing birds but the centre also provides you with the opportunity to get up and personal with the birds and really get to see their stunning features. After today's visit I've been left with an amazing feeling and I'd do it all over again.

Absolutely brilliant. Family ticket £14. We stayed about 1.5 hours in the morning. Watched the demonstration (4/5 birds)and were able to take part in the demonstration. Also you can hold some of the birds with a glove on. Amazing! Beautiful birds. My daughter loved peanut the red footed falcon and wanted to go back. You are able to go back in on the same day too so we went back later to watch another demonstration which was with different birds. Hubby and I got to hold the golden Eagle...amazing! Fully recommend this place.

Absolutely amazing. One would never expect to find something like this in the middle of town behind the cathedral. Very inexpensive entry (£4 per adult) and staff are incredibly accommodating and will take time to explain and answer any questions you may have in depth. The flight displays are impressive and the birds seem to enjoy showing off. And if you're lucky and get there at the right time you will be able to hold Grace the golden eagle on your hand and pet the barn owl 😍

What a lovely experience from we had picking our wedding rings! From the moment we walked in they were very pleasant and helpful. They showed us all different styles and nothing was too much for them! Special thanks to chetyn and the manager. We couldn’t be more happier. Compared to other shops we went in they provided a lot better service. Thank you

I took my white gold engagement ring here to be rhodium plated before my wedding and couldn’t believe how poor the job was. After a telephone call where I was promised a refund , they are now ignoring emails and social media messages. It was taken to another jeweller the following day who was equally appalled at the job. Luckily it was quickly put right by them and now looks like new again. Avoid at all cost. Do not trust this business with your jewellery.
Abbie L — Google review
Excellent service when we bought our engagement ring here 23 July 2025, they can make any piece bespoke by changing the stone, they actually own several other shops along the rows and when I described which sort of stone I would like a team member popped to the other shop and came back with the ring I’d already told my fiancé that I liked. I was worried it might be a little tight should I have swollen fingers and the lovely owner sized it up half a size the same afternoon. They provide a certificate with the carat size of the stones for your home insurance. And I got a follow up phone call a week later as the owner thought he’d forgotten to give us the certificate. Such a lovely experience from beginning to end. Thank you for helping make our day special

Here's a review of the engagement ring you've just bought: I recently purchased an engagement ring, and I couldn't be happier with the entire experience. From start to finish, the service was exceptional, especially from Chetyn, who went above and beyond to assist me. I had a custom design in mind, and Chetyn was instrumental in bringing our vision to life. Their expertise and attention to detail were remarkable, making the entire process smooth and enjoyable. The quality of the ring is outstanding. The craftsmanship is evident, and the final product exceeded my expectations. The custom design is exactly what I had hoped for. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a special piece of jewelry. The combination of excellent service, personalised attention, and high-quality craftsmanship makes it a truly memorable experience. Thanks to Chetyn and the team, we have a beautiful engagement ring that we will cherish forever.

I have been here on three occasions and been extremely happy with their work! They resized my husband's wedding ring, changed the band on two of my own rings and also expertly recreated my wedding earrings, incorporating some of the original stones. Always happy with their exceptional craftsmanship and friendly customer service. Highly recommended!

I took a very sentimental opal brooch to Rows jewellers because it had broken in two. I also had three diamond rings to sell. I received excellent, courteous and welcoming customer service on every visit to the store located in the rows, Chester, no matter how busy the shop was. The repair is superb and there is no sign of any former damage, and the owner gave me an extremely fair price for the rings and I received exactly the price we had agreed. I have no hesitation in recommending Rows Jewellers and I chose this company after visiting most jewellers in Chester because I felt I would be given time and care - and it was the right choice.

We have been very well taken care of here. I bought my wife’s engagement ring here on my sister’s recommendation. Shortly after we came back for wedding bands, and with such little time between ordering and our wedding, Haluk ensured that they were delivered to us in person, to make it in time for the wedding. All the rings are beautifully made, and they will make sure you get what you want with such a brilliant choice. Staff here are lovely people and is a very relaxed experience. I would recommend them for your jewellery needs! Thanks!

Excellent fresh ice cream from the back of Chester Market. It is served from a stall in small tubs or cones. I always get mine in a small paper tub. After being closed during the pandemic, the venue announced its return with plans to transform its iconic home in the Olde Custom House Building. With a history of 22 years in Chester, founder Neil McDonnell turned it into a phenomenon that set new standards for bars in the area.
After reading reviews we knew we wanted to visit here during a recent trip to Chester and it did not disappoint. Booked for Sunday Lunch and the meal was fantastic, both myself and my partner agreed it was the best roast we'd ever eaten out. The beef was cooked to perfection, exactly how we had asked, and the cocktails were also so good. The desserts didn't disappoint either. The restaurant itself felt exclusive and high end without feeling unwelcoming. The staff were friendly and chatty. Highly recommend this gorgeous restaurant!

It was clear that a lot of care went into making sure every detail was just right. Their attention to detail was second to none, and they made us feel completely looked after throughout the evening. It’s rare to find a restaurant that seems to nail every aspect but tonight Upstairs at the Grill did that. I can’t recommend it highly enough, and we’ll definitely be back soon!

Absolutely lovely venue, the barman was really friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our food and would definitely return. The only thing that let it down was the chef smoking on the terrace right by the door to the restaurant at the end of service and smoke blowing into the restaurant. Nice venue and friendly staff but food is poor. Nothing we had was "homemade", all pre-packaged and assembled. The Botanist bowl comprised a manufactured cous cous salad, so-called heritage tomatoes (just like bog standard supermarket ones, unripe), supposedly marinaded, green felafel out of a packet and deep fried like bullets, some hummus (not homemade), adored with chickpeas like bullets and some rocket salad, all for £14. Bargain! The lunch lamb kofta was another UPF burger like affair, served with a livid green sauce, the same hummus and chickpeas arrangement on a "garlic flatbread" out of a packet, £8.95. Save your money!

Ye Olde Boot Inn is a charming local dating back to the 1600s, offering a pub menu in its upstairs dining area. Tucked away in Chester, this hidden gem exudes an amazing and fantastic atmosphere that makes you feel like a local. The inn occupies the first floor of the building with twisted wooden beams, creating an atmospheric setting. It's located on the rows, adding to its historical appeal.
Unusual little pub with a stern "No Phones" policy, which does give a nice low level buzz of chatter to the place. Back room with more seating and toilets upstairs, good range but all, of course, Sam Smith branding.

Everything a British pub should be. Homely and inviting. A picture paints a thousand words. This is somewhere you go to ponder life on your own or have great chat with friends. They intentionally don't play music and they don't offer WiFi.

One of my favourite pubs in Chester when I’m visiting the area. Love the fact that’s it’s right in the middle of Chester’s hustle and bustle but it’s a sanctuary of calmness as soon as you enter. Great service and prices are very reasonable for the location. I fully support their no phone rules whilst visiting and appreciated the barmaid reminding people who may have forgotten especially when one of them was my wife 😂

Brilliant proper old style pub. Very good pint, friendly staff. It's a digital detox zone so no phones, laptops or tablets allowed to be used and no swearing. Very refreshing pub
Graeme B — Google review
I was visiting Liverpool and came to Chester for a daytrip and had a very nice time. However, finding Ye Olde Boot Inn was the peak of my day as I'm a sucker for ambience and medieval/fantasy style pubs and I can hands down say this was the best one I have ever been to. The lighting was very dim, everything looks like it's at least 300 years old, yet so clean and well kept! The no electronics and no swearing policies were a bit of a surprise to me as it's the first time I've ever so it, but I believe that it completely adds to the ambience as there are no bright phone or laptop lights all over the place and you can actually converse with people without everyone checking their phone every 30 seconds. In a nutshell, this is a must for anyone who appreciates "old wooden tavern" vibes where you can feel like Aragorn sitting in the corner od the Prancing pony. Also, the beer is MUCH cheaper than from what I'm used to in Liverpool.
Egonar13 — Google review
Sam Smiths pub, dimly lit, there's usual beers on offer, plus the threats of expulsion for violating their draconian "rules" around electronic devices. The Owner of this brewery is proper old school, and hates innovation.

Located in Chester, the Grosvenor Park Miniature Railway is a family-friendly attraction that offers a delightful train ride experience for both kids and adults. The friendly staff and genuine service add to the charm of this quaint railway. Adjacent to a play area, it provides entertainment for the whole family. Despite its short duration, the ride is considered good value and highly recommended by visitors.
Railway was great. My grandson loved it. Riding around the park. Also the children's park next to the railway was great with swings and climbing frames to play on. He had a great day out.
Simon A — Google review
I wouldn’t bother. There is a staff member who runs it there who is so rude. I went in over the summer holidays and asked for 3 rides for 2 children and the young man serving me accidentally charged me for only one ride each. When I checked after paying he apologised and tried to refund my ticket to start again but couldn’t, so told me not to worry and wrote on my tickets 3 rides. I watched the young man go to his manager and explain what happened and he was visibly annoyed with him infront of us. The poor young man was saying “it was a mistake”. Obviously then wound up he went hunting for my children who had that written on their tickets and started saying “oh you’ve paid properly, but you haven’t paid properly or you”…my youngest daughter is five and looked confused and upset as she didn’t understand why he was saying that to her. I approached the manager and explained that if he had a problem with it he was to come to me, not my children. I explained that my kids had done nothing wrong, we had been charged incorrectly and it was their mistake. He then backtracked completely saying he was joking, but it was obvious he wasn’t, as he was clearly wound up about it. I was livid and it ruined a fun day for us with friends.

Nice park, lots of green space, tarmac walkways, toilets, 'Faki' cafe, squirrels & birds.
Rob M — Google review
We spent several hours by the Groves and in the park. The railway was the best bit for my six year old grandson, he absolutely loved it. Very reasonably priced, buying tickets in threes is best. The trip takes around 3 minutes but feels much longer. I confess I enjoyed it as much as my grandson did. The men who operate it are really friendly, clipping the tickets adds to the experience. My only complaint. Two of them were smoking when not driving . Please go out of sight of impressionable youngsters to have a smoke.

While in the area the kids had to have a go on this train! Now it's not a long ride. But defo worth it if not just to talk to the guys! Amazingly nice gents! Lots of laughs to be had with them. It's also right next to a play area so the kids will have fun no matter what! Enjoy!!!

Chester Cross is a historic and bustling meeting point located at the junction of Watergate Street, Bridge Street, and Eastgate Street in Chester, Cheshire. This central spot offers access to four of the city's main streets and hosts a medieval monument. The area is steeped in history, dating back to Roman times when these streets served as vital arteries for the fortress.
Historic meeting point at the intersection of three streets, surrounded by attractive black and white buildings for which Chester is famous. In the summer months the town crier can be found here making a midday proclamation. There's plenty to see and do in the immediate surroundings, with a wide range of shops, cafés and pubs. Take a walk through the rows for a unique covered shopping experience. Top tourist attractions like the cathedral also aren't far away.

We spent an hour here during our visit to Chester listening to two wonderful singers. There is often some kind of entertainment, mostly musical...a Scottish piper from the Borders, a violinist, and today two very fine male singers. It made our day. Chester is just the most complete city, in my view, in the UK. It has everything.

Wonderful trip on the river Dee today on the Mark Twain £10 for an adult. Really enjoyed seeing the city from the river looks very different. Very informative commentary. Very friendly staff. Would recommend going on one of the many boats, family tickets available.

We took the 30-minute ride along the River Dee. Was absolutely worth the money. It felt like the quickest 30-minutes. Lots to see on the way with an informative talk telling you all about what you can see on both sides of the river. Has a covered area just in case of wet weather. Would definitely go on again, and this time we would book the 2 hour ride.
Katy S — Google review
We recently contacted Chester Boats regarding accessibility for a relative with mobility issues. They were extremely helpful stating that ramps could be used to reach the boat and that the mobility scooter could be left on the landing stage. There was a seating area as soon as you board the boat which is where we decided to sit and we had a lovely view of the river. The captain and staff (both female) were really helpful and efficient. The boat trip itself was very insightful, with a commentary guiding us along the 30 minute journey. Thank you for your assistance and for a lovely trip along the River Dee!

Walked up to the queue for the 12 noon and enjoyed a 30 minute boat ride along the River Dee. Plenty of seats. Smooth ride. A few steps to deal with (if you need to consider this) Toilets and bar available. £10 for an adult. I upgraded to a 24 hour Hop on Hop off city sightseeing bus for an additional £7.50.
Gillian C — Google review
Absolutely fantastic I will remember this trip for life. I took my wife and kids and little dog on the two hour iron bridge tour and it was very well put together freindly staff and boat captain. We sat on the top deck of the boat the mark twain as that's the area dogs are allowed but be wanted to sit there anyway. Downstairs is a bar area serving alcoholic and soft drinks that's fair priced we had a few ciders and it didn't break the bank. Tickets can be pre ordered from there web page this is what we did and they where expecting us. My son has low vision but still managed the boat safely. There's so much to see on the river and there's a audio guide on the boats radio telling all the facts of the area.
Alan W — Google review
We hired for a surprise 60th and invited the all the family. There was only about 40-45 people so we originally hired the Mark Twain boat but as Lady Diana was not being used, they kindly upgraded it for us. Spent an hour going down the Dee before it turned around and it was another hour coming back. The scenery was beautiful, the staff were exceptional, and buffet was delicious. Highly recommend if you wanted to do something a bit different for a special occasion

Embark on an exciting treasure hunt through the historic city of Chester with Treasure Hunt Chester. This interactive trail will have you solving clues hidden on buildings, signs, and plaques around the city to find the missing treasure. The trail starts at Chester Cross in Watergate Street and takes you on a two-mile circular route through and around the city.
Amazing afternoon spent doing this self-guided tour. Excellent puzzles, good instructions, and good snippets of history. I really enjoyed that they offered alternate routes missing steps/ steep areas. Super well thought out!

Myself, my partner and our 10 month old ventured out to Chester for a family day. I came across the treasure hunt when searching for activities and thought it would be a good way to see the city - It didn't disappoint! It forces you to think outside of the box which is great and because you are looking all over for clues, you even start to spot things that aren't part of it but also interesting. There was plenty of walking involved, all of which was pram/wheelchair friendly too. We would absolutely not hesitate to try out their treasure hunts in some of their other cities too!

As a family group of adults this was a great way to see all the sights of Chester on our first visit while solving the clues, some were pretty challenging, and we spent around 4 hours exploring. Well put together and lots of interesting facts thrown in. Highly recommended the best games of this type we have done, good value and an easy to use format
Ruth B — Google review
This was the second treasure hunt our group has done, the first being Manchester. We found Chester more tricky and therefore possibly more enjoyable. Although we'd all visited Chester previously, this hunt took us to places we hadn't seen before. Overall, another very enjoyable day out and one we'd thoroughly recommend.

Explore popular attractions like St Johns Church, The Groves, and Pepper Street, where you can hop off to explore or indulge in some shopping. Whether it's sunny or raining, you can still enjoy the tour from the comfort of your seat.
This was a wonderful tour and gave us a taste of the variety of things to see in Chester! After completing a full tour, we were able to choose several things that we wanted to see, and it was easy to Hop Off and On again at different points along the route. The 'guide' was actually a recorded commentary, with a recognisable accent (easy to understand) and LOTS of interesting information. This was the first thing we did after arriving in Chester, and we are SO GLAD that we did it because it made us realise that Chester is an absolutely fascinating city!!

Nice open top bus tour round the fabulous historic Chester City Center. Lasts about 1 hour non stop the full tour. You can hop on and off about 6 stops. You can also opt for a 30 minutes river cruise which I did separately but you can save £1 if you book both together. Helps if the weather is nice which fortunately was when I did the tour. Online recorded commentary describes the city’s history in including the Roman times. So no headphones needed. If your in Chester and have a spare hour then this definitely gets my top recommendation. At the time of this review the cost was £12.50, which I think is good value as it lasts for a full 24 hours.
Simon S — Google review
Great way to explore Chester. Adult ticket price is £10 which is a great price. Hop on and off at specific stops which are clearly marked with the sightseeing logo. Takes the stress out of exploring! Add additional £7.50 for a boat trip, saving of £2.50 which you can also buy on the bus. Running commentary in English, no need for ear plugs. Throughly enjoyed our day.
Harjinder K — Google review
I had never been to Chester before and this tour hit all the major spots. A ticket will get you 24hours on and off, so it's easy to plan getting to stop around town and not be hurried to find transport. Pro tip: keep yesterday's ticket for another tour in another city or town, you'll get a discount!
Lyndsay — Google review
We went on the City Sightseeing bus and it was very good, the recorded Narrator on the bus was very clear and precise and also very interesting whilst travelling around the city, we went on the Hop on Hop off bus and you check out during your first trip around the city where you would like to get off and just go round again. We picked it up at another stop later on to get back to the station. The drivers we had were also very pleasant. Highly recommend to learn the history of Chester.
Sandy F — Google review
A great tour at a great price My son and I learnt so much about the history of the city The downside was the attitude of the female driver who was quite aggressive in her tone and made us feel very unwelcome, every time we tried to speak she kept interrupting and told us that she was in charge We found her very rude and lacked any customer service skills. We would go on the tour again but I would tell anyone to be aware of the driver!

Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is a sprawling village-style site offering discounts on designer and high-street fashion brands. With over 140 boutiques, restaurants, and cafes spread across a quarter-million square feet of retail space, it's the largest outlet of its kind in the UK. From athletic labels like Nike and Adidas to iconic fashion brands such as Burberry and Hugo Boss, there's something for every taste.
Absolutely amazing outlet village. Being honest, this is the best Mcarther Glen outlet in the whole of the UK, in my opinion. I couldn't believe the number of shops and restaurants. The whole place is clean and very welcoming. Disabled access is perfect, too, with no issues at all. Parking was good with lots of free parking provided. A definate day out with some amazing bargains, too.
David N — Google review
This wasn’t my first time visiting the outlet, and I always enjoy coming back. It’s spacious, well-organized, and has a great variety of shops and restaurants. Getting there is super easy, and I love how everything is laid out. I went on a weekday so it wasn’t too crowded. The only thing is that the restrooms weren’t very easy to find, but they were clean and well-maintained once I did.
Dona A — Google review
This is a very popular shopping area and best to get here early for parking. Despite it having plenty of car parking spaces, we saw drivers struggling to find a space around lunchtime. There are some good discounts to be found in some shops but if you want the brand names this is a place to find them. If you are hungry on your visit, you will find plenty of choices but consult the online directory as they spread around if you are looking for something specific.

One of the best spots in the North West for big-brand shopping, Cheshire Oaks offers a great family day out. Cheshire Oaks is truly a shopper’s dream come to life! From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by a stylish open-air village filled with rows of top designer brands, all offering generous discounts. Whether you’re hunting for high-end fashion, sporty classics, homeware, or the perfect accessories, there’s something for every taste and budget. What makes Cheshire Oaks extra special isn’t just the deals — it’s the experience. The layout is spacious and thoughtfully designed, so even on busy days, it never feels too cramped. There are plenty of cozy cafés, delicious restaurants, and snack spots to fuel your shopping spree, whether you want a quick coffee break or a full sit-down meal. The staff across the stores are generally friendly and helpful, making browsing a pleasure rather than a chore. There’s also ample parking, clean facilities, and little extras like the play area and seasonal decorations that make it a lovely outing for families, couples, or a fun day out with friends. All in all, Cheshire Oaks offers a fantastic mix of retail therapy and leisure, leaving you with great finds, good memories, and probably a few extra bags you weren’t expecting — but won’t regret! 🛍️✨

Phil, our guide, was very knowledgeable and made it enjoyable and good value.

Chester is a beautiful city with lots of history. Unfortunately the residents are cold and non-communicative They walk around and don’t acknowledge others. I arrived on a Canal boat and hundreds of locals passed me by without a glance. The only person who spoke to me was a lady on a visit from Australia. She shared the same experience as me. I tried saying hello to passers by and the response was always the same - a nervous glance and grunt then eyes turned away. It seems to me that the only welcome tourists get is from shopkeepers who take the money. I don’t know how you can use the word welcome in your blurb. Chester is by no means a friendly place and I won’t be back again
