Marmalade is a charming café located in the heart of Chester's independent scene, offering a unique contrast to traditional English cafes. This licensed cafe on Northgate Street stands out for its extensive menu, featuring items like salmon muffins, full English breakfast, pulled pork panini, and crayfish salad. What sets Marmalade apart is its dedication to catering to various dietary needs, with an extensive gluten-free menu and options for vegans and vegetarians.
The food is great and the environment is really cozy and lovely. Most importantly, the people working here are so nice. Even most of the tables are booked, they still managed to give me and my son a table. Great experience dinning here. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Firstly it’s definitely worth booking to get a table here and I’m glad we did! We had a warm welcome from the staff and wow the menu was amazing. There were lots of gluten free options and I was told all the cooking for gluten free was done separately which is exceptional! I had a lush gluten free toastie and the biggest piece of cheesecake I’ve ever seen! Mostly all their cakes are gluten free as well, apart from the scones Would definitely recommend for gluten free

What a fabulous place to have breakfast, staff greet you with a warm welcome, the service was great and the food even better. Would highly recommend

1st time at Marmalade we loved it. Great service, value for money and lovely food. Thank you

I just popped in for breakfast. Now, as an American that usually means coffee and muffin/roll/scone (nothing like a British scone). I'm not celiac BUT my gastro AND my endo think I should avoid gluten as much as possible. Sadly, scones are the only baked good that isn't GF at Marmalade. I went with fruit crumble and custard sauce. It was wonderful. They brought my custard on the side (Americans!!!). I was glad, as it had a subtle sweetness with vanilla finish. The crumble itself was the perfect level of sweetness and crisp.

Amazing selection of gluten free cakes. Great to find somewhere that has a whole selection of home-made GF cakes. I didn’t sample them all but the cherry and almond was amazing Lots of fuss for the dog too

Called in after visiting the Cathedral. Wanted a drink and a light bite keep us going. Sat at the table straight away as it was later in the afternoon, but we're people in. The lovely lady came to the table and took our order for drinks and food. The sandwich I ordered was lovely, freshly made and a nice side salad, mate had cheese and pepper panini. There was a great selection of cakes but didn't try any. I recommend you visit if hungry or thirsty. A very friendly place, chatted to a customer while in there. Will definitely nip in again if in Chester.

Lovely brunch! Boyfriend had a full English which he enjoyed and I had English muffin with bacon and scrambled eggs. The scrambled eggs were divine! Staff lovely also! If you are looking for brunch/brekkie go here!

Katie's Tea Rooms is a charming establishment nestled within a stunning 14th-century Grade II listed building, offering an inviting retro ambiance that makes it the perfect spot to unwind. Spanning three floors, this delightful tearoom serves an extensive selection of specialty teas alongside an array of delectable cakes, snacks, and light lunches. Guests can indulge in traditional favorites like Carrot Cake and Eccles Cakes or opt for gluten-free options such as giant scones and tea breads.
Had a Mega Breakfast ordered. Lots of toast, two sausages, two fries eggs, and two rashes of bacon, some fried bread as well, mushrooms and beans. I didn't need any tomatoes, and they brought plenty of butter and some French mustard as requested. Good service. Got chatting to other customers near the front windows and it had a good atmosphere nearing closing time. The toilet was a trek upstairs, but really quirky. Good price. If the sausages were slightly better quality the price would have been higher, so I was happy with my decision anyway. All good. Thank you.

Cute place. Came for afternoon tea after exploring the city. Service was a little slow. Had to ask for tap water three times before we were finally served some. Tea was nice. Had some history upstairs which added to the character. Don’t sit upstairs during the winter! It’s freezing, but I imagine spring and summer are lovely.
Jaime K — Google review
Looks really lovely from the outside, with plenty of customers. Given the location possibly first time customers, visitors to the area, etc. The staff were all female and all looked very young, and lacked friendly conversation. We ordered the Full English Breakfast, whereby the usual breakfast items, beans & black pudding were an additional £0.75p. We swapped the fried bread for black pudding. We also ordered a coffee and a tea. As you can see from the pictures, the breakfast looked ok, though tasted greasy, bland and dry. The toast was half toasted on 1 side only, dry bacon, mushrooms shrivelled dry and tasteless, the saussage was full of fat and tasted awful. This was the worst cooked breakfast I have ever had. We both left half the breakfast and paid. We were charged for the black pudding, even though it was a swap. Total price £20.25. Pointless complaining as the staff looked to young and preferred not to embarrass them. As a result this post will reach the 657,000 people on my google reviews. Warning - have breakfast elsewhere.

Lovely little tearoom housed in a building that is over 700 years old. The afternoon tea, it's self was nice, you are given 3 halves of sandwiches (cheese & tomato, Salmon & egg) a scone and then you get to chios from a selection of cakes and teas/coffees. It appears very popular, as was very busy when we arrived. The toilets are a fair walk, if you need to go

We stumbled in here on a rainy day looking for some gluten free options, of which we found several !! The lunch selections were decent, and the *meal* prices were incredibly fair. The food was admittedly somewhat simple, my husband loved the leek and potatoe soup which came as part of the special. We got the impression the focus was put more on the bakery and drinks so I had to try some gluten free caramel apple crumble pie. MY GOD was it good !! However, it was nearly £6 for one lone slice. Having said that, it was surprisingly WORTH that much (but maybe just the once) The soft drinks I must admit were absurdly priced (over £4!!) and teeny tiny. The staff seemed quite friendly, however they were very busy as the place appeared to be quite popular, particularly for drinks. May return for the gluten free menu and affordable lunch, and will dream of the apple pie, but a little thrown off by the underwhelming meals and the high prices of other items. I am also celiac and faced no adverse reactions whatsoever.

Found this place on the first day of our visit to Chester. Very rare to find a place with a proper vegan menu, so I was sold. The staff were friendly, the building is lovely, food was delicious (I had the Thai inspired burger, but was too hungry and enjoying it too much to take a photo!). We liked the place and the options so much, we came back again for the second day of our trip, when I only had a vegan cheese and onion sandwich because I wanted to leave room for a pudding! If we’d stayed a week, I think we would have been able to eat there every day, which is a rare thing for a vegan to say! Next time we’re in Chester, we’ll be back…

Strolling around Chester, my Dad & I were looking for somewhere for lunch. We came across Katie's & were so glad we did. We can highly recommend the club sandwich & the coronation chicken. The staff were friendly & welcoming. The atmosphere was relaxed & there were seating areas across several floors.
Cheryl C — Google review
I visited here for a small lunch. Very nice place over three floors with lovely staff. We got a vegetarian breakfast (beware it doesn’t come with baked beans as standard!) and the leek and potato soup with cheese sandwich. The latter was disappointingly watery with an overwhelming taste of just celery. The sandwich was a couple of small triangles with the dry cheese all falling out. The breakfast was reasonable good. Service couldn’t be faulted. Not so sure I would go again.

Just had an excellent 2 night stay here. Service was excellent and our room was lovely, clean comfortable and very quiet at night. The air conditioning was extremely easy to use and was very effective. Breakfast both days was very nice. Parking in the Grovensor Centre Car Park (chargeable) allowed for very easy access to the hotel and it felt safe to leave the car there. Our thanks to all.

My wife and I stayed here the night of our wedding, along with our immediate families. The rooms were incredibly luxurious and spacious with lots of care and attention paid to them. Bed was incredibly comfy - we didn't want to ever leave! The breakfast the next day - which was most needed - was delicious and fresh, and everyone enjoyed it. A huge thank you to the staff who really went the extra mile to assure that we had a wonderful evening when we arrived and throughout our stay. From organising the block booking of rooms, to arranging breakfast for us all the following day to the personal touches special to my wife and I to celebrate. We're locals to the city and it was truly a wonderful experience to get to stay here.

As expected the hotel was fantastic. The staff couldn't do enough for us, every area was very clean. Yes this is a more expensive hotel, but you really do get what you pay for. If you want the afternoon tea book in advance as this is popular Worth a visit if you can.
Gareth P — Google review
Wow how the mighty have fallen this used to be the best hotel in the area with a Michelin starred restaurant and a member of the leading hotels in world. Now it’s a pale shadow it’definitely shouldn’t be 5 stars anymore. A lot of the staff are either rude, very rude or couldn’t give a damn and the rooms a very tired and dated. Very sad to see, it used to be a lovely place for a luxurious treat…now all you will get is a headache or a nostalgic pang for what it was.
Tom — Google review
Wonderful location. The accommodation size and quality is what we expected for the price of a suite. We did have one precariously wonky and unstable table. The bed was incredibly comfy. We enjoyed being able to order breakfast to the room.

Perched on the fifth floor of a hotel, Brasserie Abode offers a serene setting for indulging in their delightful Afternoon Tea while taking in breathtaking panoramic views of the Welsh hills and Chester Racecourse. The stylish and laid-back environment, coupled with exceptional customer service, makes it an ideal spot to unwind. Their Afternoon Tea spread features an array of delectable sweets and savories.
Attended with group of 11 for a birthday afternoon tea. A slight mix up with time, but staff were able to speak to chef and sort this with no issues. Great selection of sandwiches, cakes, scones and plentiful enough for us to take away for our suppers. Lovely restaurant with beautiful views over racecourse.
Clare T — Google review
Plentiful afternoon tea in elegant surroundings. Great views! Asked as soon as we arrived if we'd like still or sparkling water (money spinner). Opted for Tap water. Lovely sandwiches and cakes. The scones were disappointing, overcooked and too hard-replaced on asking with fresh. £43 for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. Pleasant, efficient staff.
Carol G — Google review
The place itself is quite nice. We went for drinks. I asked for two different whiskies, one of which the staff hadn't heard of despite it being on the menu. For two large reds, a double and a single Johnnie Walker, it was £47! But to add insult to injury, they added on a 10% tip! Our table was next to the bar so what was done to warrant it? I know they will say we can ask to take it off but they know customers don't want to have the conversation so it actually cost over £50. I'd love the business to justify the tip. We are not in the USA and if they aren't paying their staff enough then that's on them. It's not my responsibility to pay the staff. I will not be back.
Kurt J — Google review
We visited Abode Chester on Saturday 22nd February. Food was good! Location was lovely. However, the service was absolutely terrible considering it was a group paying over £300. We ordered Afternoon Tea which was supposed to come with free refillable hot drinks, however not once did anybody come over to see if we wanted extra refreshments, we had to go up and chase, we had already been there 30/40 minutes at this point. Again with standard drinks, we had to go up, then eventually someone would come over and ask us. Additionally, there was not enough cutlery or plates, despite booking the table with the amount of people attending in advance. This is really disappointing as the restaurant was not busy, and there was more than enough staff by the looks of it. We were just left. This is not what I would expect from this type of establishment. Staff did not greet us on arrival, and I feel they were quite hostile, again, for this type of establishment, this is not what you would expect. We were also overcharged as the menu stated £25pp, instead we were charged over £26pp. We also paid a service charge of around £30 which I did not realise at the time otherwise, I would’ve requested for this to be removed as the service was awful. After paying over £300 for mediocre food and appalling service, we could’ve gone to Grosvenor Pulford for similar, but incredible service! I never leave reviews however, this has truly been one of the worst experiences that not just me, but the whole group experienced. Unfortunately, due to the service we will not be coming back again.
Megan C — Google review
The restaurant is on the 5th floor of the building over looking Chester race course. Amazing service and food. Very friendly and professional staff. Good price and superb location
Anderson S — Google review
Absolutely terrible meal, from start to finish. Bad food, but even worse service. The manager was also terrible and I deeply regret spending my time and money on the restaurant. Would never return.
Victoria — Google review
Had afternoon tea, food ok but no facilities to bring home what you don't eat and it's to expensive to waste at £26pp. Staff very clumsy, knocked over milk and was going to walk away from cleaning it up and did not bring any more. They eggnored any contact once the food was served for drinks refill.
Geoff H — Google review
High expectations. Let down. Family Christmas meal was really poor in the end. Poor greeting from the staff. Service was confused and poor. Slow to do anything, no knowledge of the menu, no knowledge of our pre booked booking and what was included. Drinks were poor. Food was average. Wouldn’t recommend, and you pay a pretty penny to top it all off..

Located in Chester's city center, The Flower Cup is a veteran in the city's specialty coffee scene, having opened its doors in 2016. Unlike many other coffee shops in the area, it stands out by being situated on the upper floor of Watergate Street and boasts a botanical theme with an abundance of plants and flowers. This independent coffee shop offers a vegan menu featuring various brunch dishes such as vegan breakfast, breakfast bap, and Shakshuka.
I was on city break in Chester for two days. I found this place on Instagram few days before my visit. The dessert was tasty and very nice decorated. The prices are reasonable. I liked the plants hanging from celling. The young girl who was our waiter was nice but very sad and looked miserable. I think it could be there much better atmosphere if she tries a little bit smile taking the orders. It doesn't cost a lot. It's not a complain, definitely not. Just my own impression.

Really lovely spot in Chester. We were going up for a girls trip and stopped for some Brunch. The presentation is lovely and the Welsh rarebit was exactly what I expecting! I would have loved it even more if the potions were a bit bigger as I found myself ordering some extra toast on the side to keep me full.
Diya G — Google review
The vibe was amazing – very cozy and welcoming, which made for a lovely atmosphere. The food was nicely presented and great for photos or social media. Taste-wise, it was okay, quite similar to what you’d expect from a typical brunch place. The staff were generally friendly, which we appreciated. However, when we paid our bill (around £31–32) with £40, one of the staff asked, “Do you want change?” That made my husband and me feel a bit uncomfortable. We usually leave a tip without being asked, but in this case, the way it was handled felt a little awkward, so we decided not to tip. Overall, it was a decent visit. Beautiful setting and warm vibes, but there’s a bit of room for improvement with the food and service approach.

Decided to go to Chester for breakfast on our way home from a summer party and found The Flower Cup - lovely little place. Breakfast was mighty - think I had half a loaf, with whole avacodo and a side of smoked salmon. Absolutely delicious and rolled out - eggs Royal was pretty special too!

Absolutely loved this place! The breakfast was fresh, tasted amazing and beautifully presented. The staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. Cozy atmosphere, great coffee, and a menu with something for everyone. Dog friendly offering water and ham! I will definitely be back!

Lovely little café with lots of greenery and a relaxed vibe. I had the Hot Honey Halloumi French Toast (£12), which was really good—though they swapped pomegranate for blueberries, which changed the flavour slightly. My partner had the Maple Syrup French Toast (£10.30) with an added poached egg (£2.50) and enjoyed it. We didn’t wait long, and service was good albeit a little miserable from our server, she didn't seem interested in being there at all. A nice spot for brunch in Chester.

Category: breakfast and coffee Dishes ordered: sourdough scrambled eggs, sourdough avocados Taste: very delicious Atmosphere: nice dine in beside the terrace Value for money: medium Other features: nice view to nearby walking path, friendly staff.

he atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with warm lighting and comfortable seating that made it perfect for both relaxing and catching up with friends. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring we felt welcomed from the moment we walked in. The menu offered a great variety of options, from freshly brewed coffee to delicious pastries and hearty brunch dishes. I tried their signature avocado toast and a latte, both of which were absolutely delicious—fresh ingredients and perfectly balanced flavors. The coffee was rich and aromatic, clearly made with high-quality beans. The prices were reasonable for the quality, and the service was quick without feeling rushed. The only minor suggestion would be to add a few more vegan options to the menu.

Oddfellows Chester Hotel is a unique city-center retreat with a hidden gem called The Secret Garden, offering a peaceful oasis away from the bustling high street. Guests can relax in heated booths or at fountain-side tables while enjoying bites from the garden menu and drinks from the Potting Shed bar. The hotel also offers an exceptional afternoon tea experience with quirky interiors and a touch of humor, including options for both sweet and savory preferences.
Oddfellows in Chester is fantastic, my wife and I had our wedding there and the staff went above and beyond in helping us the whole way from initial booking to the big day. Rebecca the events manager is amazing at her job and helped sort all wedding details with us. The chefs are brilliant, reflected in the excellent food. Bar and waiting staff are so friendly and on top of everything at all times. We have been to the restaurant and bar many times before the wedding and the service is always top class. Highly recommend for a wedding, visit, stay over or bite to eat and drink. Quirky interior and lovely vibe in the place

Attended a wedding here at the weekend and had a wonderful time. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even more special. The venue itself has a really cool, stylish vibe that adds to the celebration’s atmosphere. Everything was well organized, and I felt comfortable and relaxed throughout the day and evening. Highly recommend this spot for anyone attending or planning a wedding!

Having just held our wedding here, we can’t recommend it enough. The venue fit our theme, the bedrooms were lovely, the bar and restaurant areas beautifully decorated, and the upper floor was ideal for our needs. The staff were super friendly, but a special mention to Katie, who looked after us in the absence of the main events coordinator. She did a brilliant job ensuring the venue was set up exactly as we wanted. And finally, a big shoutout to Daniel - mentioned by several of our guests - who was one of the nicest and most helpful people we’ve had the pleasure of dealing with in the industry.

Had Sunday lunch in Oddfellows restaurant yesterday. We had a party if seven ladies who received the lovely news that one of them was getting married next year. Our server, Daniel, was amazing. Firstly he rearranged the seating to accommodate us all. He joined in our "banter". He then brought out a Congratulations board with strawberries and cake. The meal was very good, hot and tasty and the drinks was good too. To be fair, all the staff were friendly but Daniel was outstanding. Just a note to say that this is a card only venue. We will return (we hope we get Daniel), and we highly recommend it

Had a 1 night stay here and it was absolutely incredible. Deserves more than 5 stars! The service, the food, the atmosphere.. all AMAZING! They were so accommodating as I was booking for my partners birthday, they made it extra special and the service was just perfect. The food is outstanding, one of the best meals we’ve had. It’s over a 2 and a half hour drive from us but we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again! Would totally recommend. Thank you :)
Ellie B — Google review
We just had our wedding here on Saturday, I just needed to say how incredible all the staff were. Rebecca and the team made everything so seamless and everything ran so smoothly. The day was so incredible but the staff from Oddfellows just took it to the next level! Anything at all we asked wasn’t in any way too much and my (sometimes ridiculous) requests were accommodated straight away! We stayed in the 3 bedroom apartment which was insanely big for getting ready, with ample parking and the honeymoon suite we had on Saturday night was also incredible. All the food was amazing and every drink served was perfectly made! Just wish we could do it all again this weekend :)

Just had the best food here - Alice’s Parlour is quirky and fun and the food does not disappoint! Absolutely packed with flavour, I loved every mouthful. I chose the vegetarian options just because they sounded so appealing and I was really glad it did. Heartily recommend this eatery

Amazing stay, we were a very large group staying for a celebration and the staff could not have been more lovely. We all had afternoon tea in the garden/terrace which was delicious and the staff were so helpful and happy to assist getting the place decorated/set up. Choosing The Townhouse made our weekend perfect, it had everything we needed and a wonderful team. The rooms were great and fairly priced. Thank you again - what a gem of a place

this hotel is perfect! Bedrooms are clean, beds are comfy, lovely bathroom with good quality toiletries. Breakfast is cooked to amazing quality. I don’t normally like scrambled eggs but the scrambled eggs made at this hotel are perfection! staff go above and beyond for all guests. staff being helpful telling us where they best recommended us to go! The seating areas opposite the reception is gorgeous, comfy chairs. the bar area is an affordable price and we have enjoyed our evening games of pool during our stay. everywhere is beautifully decorated and you can’t complain about the price of the stay because it is 100% worth it.

The rooms were recently renovated. There was the odd bit of missed dirt like a spill down the front of one of the bedside tables. Hotel was small and located in easy walk of the riverside, gardens, Roman amphitheatre, shops and restaurants. Parking was few minutes walk away and we managed to use the 30 mins on street for check in and check out. The weather was hot while we were there and the room was way too hot. The windows were open when we arrived (safety locks had been disabled) be careful with young children, I had to put ours back in. There was a fan which we had on permanently but it was 2am before I was cool enough to sleep. There is a lively outdoor seating area for drinks and games for the kids and a pool table indoors. All of which were unbelievably quiet for the holidays, gorgeous weather and how nice the place is.

My niece and I spent three very enjoyable days at the hotel in July. The room was very large and the beds very comfortable and everything was very clean. We enjoyed the breakfasts which were delicious. Service was exceptional and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff particularly Nichola. She made us feel very welcome. The hotel is ideally placed to enjoy all Chester has to offer and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

It's the 2nd time we have stayed here, depending on which room you have can make the difference between a good night's sleep or not. Unfortunately, room 4 is not as good as some of the other ones. The breakfast is excellent, in particular the scrambled eggs are the best I have eaten. As well as hot beverages available in your room, lovely biscuits and bottles of water are also included. The location of the hotel is very good for all the sights, restaurants etc. The staff we encountered were very friendly especially in the breakfast room.

Very lovely room, and right where you want to be in town easy walk to the main street and the river. We didn't have food/ drink here but the lady who checked us in was fab (sorry didn't catch name) but very helpful with parking and any questions we had including parking discount.

They also offer coffee and platters that can be customized according to your preferences. With over a century of experience, Chatwins Bakery has passed down traditional baking skills through four generations. Their store offers freshly baked cakes and pastries, including options like Victoria Sponge, Battenberg, Swiss roll cakes, doughnuts, eclairs, and tarts.
First visit and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was excellent and the staff were delightful. There isn't a great deal of space available for dining in but we fell lucky especially having our special needs son with us in his wheelchair. The loaded batch are fantastic, sausage rolls and sandwiches, oh yes and the cakes and not overly expensive we will definitely be going back.

Big deception. We ordered egg baps with extra turkey. after, they reported that they had no eggs, they suggested replacing them with chicken. in the end, they brought us baps without an additional portion of turkey, only with chicken. however, we paid more than we should have. bad experience.

Very bizarre experience!!! We have called in here a few times when we visit Chester and have a coffee and breakfast barm, there are normally a couple of young girls serving and even when it's busy they are courteous, efficient and manage a smile. Today there were two older women behind the counter, one of the "woman" we have seen in here before (she never looks like a smile has ever troubled her face) We won't say they worked here as we saw very little work, I was the only person at the counter my wife sat at one table and only two other tables were occupied, one woman looked in our direction and then slipped behind the screen (weird behaviour) and the other stayed at the top of the shop making an effort NOT to make eye contact! We assumed they must be busy preparing food for the occupied tables but both tables had food and drink!!. After a few minutes the remaining woman walked down the shop to where we waited but avoided eye contact and never acknowledged us! NO "I'll be with you in a bit" NO "won't be a minute" NO smile, NOTHING! she looked the other way and made a show of moving some trays around and not making eye contact!!!!! Another customer walked in took a look at her, turned to his wife, rolled his eyes and his wife signaled for him to leave, which he promptly did shaking his head!!! I waited another minute but feeling awkward signalled to my wife to leave and promptly did. What am I missing? Is this some sort of "faulty towers" experience? Or is this one of those businesses that don't need customers? Walk across the road to "Starbucks" or walk up the stairs there is a café above "pandora" and the staff are happy to serve.
S P — Google review
Saw this place in passing. Good choice of sandwich options - can include extras. A bit of queue with only a couple of staff on, and limited seating area downstairs. Although, good customer service, and rather nice food so I would go here again.
David H — Google review
Been going here for over 10 years. Never again. It's now sadly a total rip-off. £6 for a bacon on toast. When previously (and at other branches) it was always u der a fiver. Appalling attitude and service from the staff and as for the "manager", she needs to wind her neck in and learn what customer service is about. Absolutely discusted.
Colin S — Google review
The cafe served fresh food made to order. The gentleman who served us was friendly and helpful. We got served promptly and the surroundings were clean and comfortable. The portions are quite big so if you don't have a huge appetite maybe best to share. A good variety of food and drink available and suitable for most diets.
Emma H — Google review
One extremely rude woman who shouldn't serve people as she has no customer service skills, tutting and rolling her eyes as we ordered, served our food on dirty plates, got funny when we asked for clean plates, didn't clean the table before we ate, when I took our Copenhagen slices back and asked if we could choose something else as they had hardly any jam filling and they weren't the same as what they used to be, she was rude again, luckily another woman who actually has customer service skills intervened and kindly helped us, we selected another cake and there was no problems. Shame you employ people like that first lady, as it ruins people's experiences and gives your company a bad reputation. She shouldn't be customer facing at all, shocking and embarrassing
T G — Google review
Unless you're happy to be served by the world's grumpiest and slowest staff then don't bother, walked in with a cheery hello for Karen to greet me with a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, all 3 staff were then in the back and we could hear them moaning about how 'its not working'.... maybe start with serving your customers. We took the last 2 sausage rolls and then they decided to put more in the oven...maybe think ahead before you run out. Food was ok but the meat is dry....could do with gravy! Over priced for what it is, don't bother!

The communication between the customer and the delivery driver was effective, resulting in resolution of issues and satisfactory customer service. The brand operating the delivery vans remains unclear, but it is apparent that there are concerns regarding the labeling of a pork pie which contains a high percentage of gelatine. Additionally, sausages were delivered cold and prices have increased. Despite these setbacks, Gerrards bakery is praised for its delicious baked goods and excellent value compared to chain bakeries like Greggs or Pound Bakery.
I was visiting Hoole and popped in to Gerrards for a sweet treat! The lady serving was very friendly and the different Christmas biscuits and cakes looked amazing with lots to choose from. I decided on a mince pie with brandy butter cream and it was delicious. Definitely worth a visit.
Carole K — Google review
On holiday for a few days and decided to try the local bakers. Unfortunately we were extremely disappointed as both sandwiches and one of the cakes were stale. The filling was very poor with the people serving not knowing what ingredient were in them. Definitely would not use this chain of bakers again.
Mark M — Google review
The staff are lovely but unfortunately the food was not good .the bean and sausage pasty was cold and didn't contain a singular sausage, the sausage roll had an unpleasant chemical taste and the texture was like slush.
Lucy S — Google review
UPDATED: Let the van driver know about the issues and was offered a refund for the pie and a free sandwich. Great customer service. I don't know what store runs the delivery vans, but it's all part the same brand so can someone explain how this is a pork pie? If its content is 90% gelatine then surely its a gelatine pie? Sausages stone cold today as well and the icing on the cake (pun intended) prices have gone up.

Thought this place was lovely, great bakes and great value. You'd be a fool to seek out a chain like Greggs or the Pound Bakery given the gulf in quality of ingredients and historical knowledge of baking. The loafs looked fantastic but was a bit too late in the day to get one at this time, but will be back to buy one soon.

Olawa Bakery Chester is a charming Polish bakery located on Brook Street, conveniently close to the central sorting post office. Visitors have praised its hearty sourdough bread and generous fruit crumble treats, perfect for sharing with the family. The bakery also offers great value for money and an enticing menu that includes coffee and lunch options. Despite its closing time, the pastries are still fresh and delightful, not overly sweet but reasonably priced.
Always handy to be able to get a quality, home made takeaway snack so close to a railway station. I’m on the Cabbage Roll & Fresh Coffee - should keep me going until Penmaenmawr.

Saw the shop every day, going home from the train station, and decided to get something the other day. And I was not disappointed. It was almost at the closing time, and thought pastries wouldn't be that fresh. But I was so wrong. It was fresh and tasted delightful. It's not overly sweet, which is just the way I like it, and the price is really good for what you're getting. Will definitely go back again and try the other stuff. Highly recommend!

A gem of a new Polish bakery on Brook Street. Right by the half hour parking by the central sorting post office - handy if you’re driving past. I have been in a couple of times now. First time for bread (a sour dough which was very hearty) and the next for a fruit crumble treat (picked out by my little one) which was big enough to share with the family. Next time I’ll go back for a coffee and lunch treat! Great value for money too! (Check out the menu).

An amazing little shop filled with sweet and savoury treats. I order a Cheese, Bacon and Mayo toastie that arrived on a lovely sourdough bread and was delicious and filling with every bite. I additionally bought a Spanish Donut and for the price, the size is unreal! Highly recommend anyone stop by and have a look at all their goods. Really friendly staff as well who always greet you with a smile.

I can't show you a picture of the Almond Croissant we just shared because it disappeared so quickly! Easily enough for three it was generous, flaky, sweet and outstanding! We ran by here on a whim as we had a few moments before catching the train. There is fresh bread, pastries, pre-made sandwiches, and pizzas for one. The woman at the counter was kind and patient with us as we decided. This is on our list of places to return to while in Chester!!!

Nestled within the vibrant Chester Market, Pastry Pédaleur is a delightful gem that promises to tantalize your taste buds with its exquisite pastries. Founded by Stephanie Peters, a talented pastry chef with experience from the renowned Grosvenor Hotel and prestigious bakeries in London, this stall beautifully marries French and Indian culinary traditions. Each visit offers something new as their menu frequently evolves, ensuring that every sweet craving can be satisfied.
Stephanie has such vision and execution for her pastries and desserts and puts her heart into everything she bakes! She was a delight to talk to, super friendly, and provided wonderful service. I also can't say enough about how fresh and flavorful her desserts and pastries are. We've tried 2 cruffins, macarons, a custard, and a few other desserts and pastries. So tasty! Please, be sure to drop by!

Stopped off for some food in Chester Market and passed here after 6pm on a Saturday night. They still had plenty available and the staff were busy making more! The food and treats looked stunning. Great selection and they even had frozen treats too! I went for the Macaron ice cream sandwich, which tasted great and was reasonably priced. High quality items, very well presented and made with care. Pleasant staff too. I’ve wanted to try here for a few years and finally managed to catch it. Highly recommended!

Their menu keeps updating, meaning you'll find something new everytime you visit Pastry Pédaleur. A must go-to spot inside the new Chester market for satisfying you sweet tooth. Shout out to chef owner Stephanie and team for always having that thousand megawatts smile and being kind and thoughtful with service. Side notes; you will get addicted to their macroons and cheesecakes, they're unbelievably good. You've been warned!

Yesterday I honestly believe found the greatest cheesecake in the world actually in my home town! This statement may seem like an over exaggeration, however I really mean it. Prior to this, the best cheesecake I ever had was in a place called Juniors in New York. Yes, I’m really saying that Stephanie Peters may have just put New York to shame with her cheesecake. This is a Chester inspired cheesecake that exclusively made for the groups that joined the ‘On a plate’ Chester tour. Stephanie, please keep up this incredible work and for the love of god! Please make the Chester inspired cheesecake more accessible. I never believed it would make me emotional and proud to be a Cestrian.

The tea house Mad Hatters Tearoom and Bakery is a place where you can enjoy a cup of tea in an interesting and unique setting. The staff and team at Mad Hatters are fond of the funnier side of life, which shines through in their light lunches and afternoon teas.
We visited mad hatters today and it didn't disappoint the staff where very welcoming and lovely. We where seated very quickly even though it was busy and the menu's where handed to us as we sat down. The menu where in keeping with the theme with cups hanging off the ceiling and mad quirky lights here and there. Once seated we had a look at the menu and choose what we would like the food and drinks arrived a short time later and they did not fail to impress the latte and the tea where nice but the food was brilliant and was very reasonably priced too glad we popped in looking forward to our next visit.

The independent coffee shop, Citrus, embodies all the qualities one would expect. The staff members were cordial and attentive, providing excellent customer service that made patrons feel genuinely welcomed. Not only did they serve a fantastic cup of coffee and delectable pastries, but their menu also boasted appetizing dishes that attracted a constant flow of customers.
A warm, cosy and inviting little coffee shop. With top tier coffee and cakes. My partner, daughter and I really enjoyed our morning coffee here. The owner and I had a really great conversation about how he likes to pay attention to detail to the coffee he makes and he did not disappoint. Coffee and cake to perfection. Thank you. Will be returning frequently.

Great coffee shop/cafe. Breakfast rolls were incredible and the coffee excellent. Big selection of hot drinks, although had I seen the London Fog on the menu I would have had it! Some of the drinks displayed on the TV showing what I assume to be the menu were missing, including the dirty chai.

First time visiting the cafe, it’s lovely inside and the food was amazing. Coffee tastes 10x better than any of the typical chains and everything is very reasonably priced.

First time here. The staff are incredibly friendly there is a huge choice of food and coffees all which can be decaff. It's a local hub of activity. Really pleasant. Would absolutely recommend. I'll be coming back.

Food was lovely, went a few days ago. But the music was way too loud to the point where the atmosphere was ruined. The service seemed like they didn’t want to serve me and my friend. But again can’t fault the food.

We had Sandwiches/ Jacket Potato from here after visiting the local park. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was really tasty and a good price. Came to less than we'd expected with drinks etc. Good selection of cakes and cookies on show that looked nice, but we didn't order these. A few tables outside which were nice to sit at in the sun. Definitely eat here again when we next visit the park.

Neighbourhood Bakehouse is a trendy artisan bakehouse and dining spot located at 108 Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HT. The place offers exceptional brunch and artisan coffee, with delicious homemade cakes baked on-site. It has a Parisian patisserie vibe and stands out as an independent gem with high-quality food and reasonable prices. The tapas menu is highly recommended for its fresh and flavorful options.
My partner and I booked a table on a whim on the train to Chester after googling “eggs florentine” and it didn’t disappoint. It’s beautiful, cozy, atmospheric. The cafe is bustling yet intimate and not echoey. Service was very friendly and, despite being busy, efficient. Yes, we had to wait a bit to get the bill, but that gave us time to finish our fantastic Bloody Mary’s. Food was quality, fresh, and tasty. This will now be our go-to place when coming to Chester for the day. But it seems it’s best to book as it is popular. Not sure if they do walk ins.
Gus — Google review
I walked in today to get a slice of cake as I saw it through the window and thought it looked nice. Walked in and no one was there to serve me. I waited for a bit and then someone walked in and said ‘what can I get for you’. No hello or apology for making me wait. I said I would like two slices of cake (1 salted caramel and 1 carrot, orange, and pecan). There was a small slice (looked about 2.5cm in width) left of the entire loaf for the salted caramel cake and rather than just give me that, she decides to cut that piece in half. It was this point that I should’ve walked out and I wish I had. She then dropped the knife on the countertop and wasn’t concentrating before eventually handing me my slices. She did not say ‘bye’ or ‘thank you’ either. Poor customer service. Luckily, the other slice of cake (orange, pecan, and carrot) was larger. Considering each slice was essentially £4, I was expecting a bigger slice for the salted caramel rather than her cutting an already small slice even smaller. I found it insulting honestly and I wish I had left, but you live and learn. I have put photos of the cake slices untouched - you will be able to tell instantly which one is the salted caramel slice. I will definitely not be returning or recommending this place to anyone.

A quality spot in Chester...booking recommended as it's really popular but this popularity is well deserved! We took refuge here on a really windy, rainy day and were greeted by lovely decor and friendly service. I had orange juice and an eggs royale which was exquisite. Can't wait to go back and sample something else from the menu or from the bakery!
Alex J — Google review
I popped in for a takeaway lunch and the mozzarella and tomato focaccia was so tasty The mint and pistachio raw bar is amazing too. There is no menu for the takeaway just what was in the window as it is freshly prepared so I would recommend going early. They had focaccia sandwiches, filled croissants and quiche options. The lady on the counter was very helpful and friendly.

Excellent cafe. The layout and decor inside is beautiful. The staff were really friendly and attentive. The food and drinks came out quickly and were very well presented and absolutely delicious!! The whole place including toilets were clean and we were able to get some desserts from the cafe to take away for later. This place is an absolute must, we already want to go back to try more. Only negative was we had to go up to a stand to order and felt for the price and style of place it should have been table service and should have paid after we ate.

We attended for mother’s day Afternoon tea yesterday and everything was incredible. Food, atmosphere, drinks ( particularly Meet me in Capri) and of course the wonderful staff as always. Best afternoon tea in Chester by far. 100% recommend.

This is perhaps one of the best brunch/artisan coffee shops I’ve ever been to. The food is exceptional, and all the cakes are not only to die for- they are genuinely home made in the baking area towards the back of the shop. Coming in here is like coming into a Parisian patisserie. As an independent little coffee shop it is a hidden gem and puts all the chains out there to shame for the quality and price. As for the coffee- the mocha is quite simply the BEST!! I don’t even live in Chester but I travel from Manchester once a week to treat myself to brunch here !!

Pret A Manger is a popular counter-serve chain known for its ready-made sandwiches, breakfast options, coffee, soups, and salads. The cafes are described as clean and fresh with a light and airy atmosphere. Despite being busy at times, the staff efficiently manages the queues. There are ample seating options including a spacious upper floor with a balcony for people-watching. Customers appreciate the great selection of food and fast service.
I've had lunch here most Saturdays for over five years. The cafe is always clean and fresh, light and airy. They always have plenty of staff on during busy periods, so although there may be a large queue, it’ll go down fast. It’s manic in there sometimes and it must take a special kind of people to staff it. There are plenty of tables, including a large upper floor, with a balcony for observing the "busy-ness" down below. The food is well presented, always appears prepared to a high standard and is tasty. I usually have the macaroni cheese with prosciutto or the mac and kale, because it’s hearty, filling and warm. The pastries are superb, the better for being freshly baked. The croissants are light and fluffy. I also recommend the cinnamon swirl. Their tea is a particularly nice blend.
Paul C — Google review
Awful coffee for a Pret, really surprised and disappointed. Think the staff couldn’t be bothered to put fresh coffee in the machine and just used the last shot. Tasted like watery rubbish.
Collette R — Google review
I was enjoying my time until my wife had an incident with the toilet paper dispenser, which resulted in her being hit in the face. Contact information was provided, but we have not received any follow-up from Pret, which is quite disappointing.

Horrendous queues even on quiet days, mismanagement is clear to see behind the counter..but worse ..much worse than that the girl serving has filthy black dirt under ALL.her finger nails 🤢literally turned my stomach..why on earth hasn't Senior management addressed this? Its bizarre and revolting in a food environment very concerning if she makes the sandwiches too??
LH — Google review
I went into the Chester branch today with my friend, she knocked her drink over I went to move my drink out of the way and knocked mine over. My friend went to the counter and ask one of the staff do you have a mop we have spilt our drinks. She gave us some blue roll so my friend was cleaning up the mess a member of the public came and helped us her boyfriend found a wet floor sign, we never did get the mop and not one member of staff came to help us. The shop wasn’t busy so they couldn’t use that excuse we are still waiting for the help. So we are not impressed with the help from staff.

Waitrose & Partners Chester is a supermarket chain known for its fresh British produce, groceries, and baked goods. The store offers a variety of high-quality items including store-brand products. Customers have praised the beautiful Kenyan roses available at the store and appreciated the helpful staff. Some shoppers have experienced issues with product quality, such as milk going sour quickly and fish that seemed off before the sell-by date.
🌟 Huge shout-out to Katie at Waitrose Chester! 🌟 I believe she's a manager there, and she truly went above and beyond. I had travelled quite a distance and stopped at Waitrose Chester for some shopping when my car suddenly wouldn’t start. The customer service team was fantastic, but Katie stood out with her incredible support. With my wife and our two little daughters with me, it was a stressful situation, but Katie was calm, kind, and genuinely helpful. She made sure we were looked after and gave us all the assistance we needed. Her compassion and professionalism made a real difference to our day. Thank you, Katie, you’re a star.

Felt like the shelves were half stocked, first thing on a Sunday morning. Had to go to a different supermarket to finish my shop. Also the kitchen was closed. Not a great first impression! Staff were super pleasant.
Mike B — Google review
This large Waitrose on Boughton looks relatively new. Part of a small complex which also includes an Evans Cycles and an HSL shop, the overall aesthetic is austere. In many ways this dark and looming store looks more like an industrial unit than a supermarket – modern taste I guess. The complex also includes a Moxy hotel, which is the chain that loves neon and thinks of itself a being a bit ‘quirky’ – sort of like a modern day Malmaison. Inside, two large travelators lead upstairs – there is no ground floor as this is largely occupied by the car park – this reminds me of the Waitrose of my youth. Nostalgia has a powerful pull. Once upstairs, this is a large Waitrose and offers a full choice – this isn’t like one of the rubbish little Waitrose that you get at Service Stations, it’s a full-on red-blooded beast of a supermarket. Shop includes a butcher and a baker, as well as an excellent choice of beers and spirits. I did notice though that Cruzcampo was popular with the shoppers, which doesn’t really say anything positive about the local area. Nice to see a decent provisioning of self-service tills in store and thy also do that thing where you scan your own shopping as you walk about, although I have never used that. Outside, a short walk to the City Centre or, if headed the other way, to the shops of Boughton itself. Some people will drive, and there is a car park, but I’ve always thought of Waitrose as a supermarket to be walked to, for the picking of delicacies, rather than bulk.

Really poor breakfast today. My partner wanted a fresh orange and only option was a child's carton and straw then ordered scrambled eggs on toast . This arrived in a tub....bright orange eggs ...just weird . I ordered avocado on toast ...again lots of strange unseasoned avocado ...may have gone with an egg...but I scraped it off...ate a bit of toast. My view ...avoid....pretty horrible food but place very clean. There are so many better places in Chester ...I'll never go there again..Save your cash !!

Shane A — Google review
Car park only one and half hours, not enough time to have a lunch or break in their coffee shop and do some shopping. Was fined once, not a friendly way to treat customers spending money in their store. Didn't attend store for some months after that. So only 4 stars.
Peggy A — Google review
We’ve been regular customers at Waitrose for years, but recently we’ve noticed a disappointing decline — both in the store and especially in the café. Prices in the supermarket feel increasingly inflated, and the overall value no longer matches the experience. As for the café, it used to be our favourite spot for breakfast. Sadly, the quality and service have dropped significantly. Most importantly, the children’s menu is no longer suitable. With a child, it’s become uncomfortable to dine there. Please consider reviewing and improving your kids’ menu — families are a big part of your customer base, and it’s important to make them feel welcome.
Julia P — Google review
I haven't visited in quite a few years. I collected a trolly resisting my arm strength, so I swapped it on the shopping level. It was only at the checkout that I remembered my shopping bags on the abandoned trolley. Luckily, 2 assistants overheard me & said they had put them away. That was nice of them. I'll be back as the saying goes! Many thanks.

Walk Mill is a charming eatery located in a reconstructed flour mill by the River Gowy. The cafe offers a simple yet extensive menu, including freshly-made sandwiches and homemade cakes. Visitors can enjoy their choice of coffee roasted at The Lost Barn while taking in the picturesque surroundings from various seating options, including a glass conservatory and outdoor area. The mill also produces its own flour for daily baked bread, creating an authentic taste that sets it apart from commercial products.
I haven't been here for many years, but here I am back again and regretting being a stranger. If you're the kind of person who likes a bit of peace and quiet, this place is for you, it's away from the road with a VERY weak phone signal so no Dom Joly characters shouting into their black mirrors. The food is excellent and so is the coffee. I'll be refuelling here again on long bike rides 👍

At last we managed to pop in on way to Wales, have been meaning too for years. We Weren't disappointed. The caramel machiato was gorgeous and I'm not a coffee lover lol and the cake of the week was excellent, one can tell it's made there, same goes for my husbands latte and carrot cake. We sat in the lovely airy conservatory, there were picnic benches outside. Lady explained that the wheel had been turning in the morning but unfortunately river too low when we were there for it to work, we have had very hot weather lately. I bought a bag of flour which I though was reasonably priced. They also produce their own rapeseed oil. There are countryside walks on their property you can take.

Highly recommend a visit to the Walk Mill. A gorgeous little space tucked away that offers absolutely beautiful, freshly prepared food. Bread is all made fresh on site using their own flour, also milled by them. Food is reasonably priced and a great selection available, a lovely range of cakes and scones is also on offer. Staff are really friendly and welcome well behaved dogs (on leads) too!

Went for dog walk and coffee, staff miserable and rude. Long queue which didn't seem to move very quickly, seemed to be lots of staff milling around, but no one really doing much to serve. Bought their home made bread, paid £2.80 for a loaf, worst bread I've ever tasted. Rock hard and tasteless. I struggled to cut slices, ended up going in the bin. Will not be visiting again.

Chatwin's Bakery offers a wide range of sweet and savoury treats, with platters to order for those who want to enjoy a meal in one go. The bakery is located in Chester, just underneath some historic Tudor buildings. It is open from 7am until 12 midnight, making it the perfect place to stop off on your way into the city.
What have I been missing all these years by not eating at a Chatwins⁉️ The freshly made Chicken, Bacon & Spring Onion on Focaccia was simply delicious. Great, friendly service as well; modest price increase for eating in. 30 mins free parking if you’re lucky enough to find a space.
Mark N — Google review
Me and my friend needed to kill time and grab a quick bite to eat so chose Chatwins in Hoole. Unfortunately the staff were miserable as soon as we walked in and it appeared to be an inconvenience to them that we wanted to eat despite the fact that they work in a bakery… Secondly, my friend is a vegetarian and there was no sandwich option available for her, so she kindly asked, if it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience, that they could make her a cheese and salad sandwich. There is no exaggeration when I say you would have thought she asked them to lick the floor, but to be fair they did the bare minimum and made her the sandwich…begrudgingly. Finally, I ordered a bap and even said to my friend that I would go and find us a table, at which no point did the miserable lady serving us mention that there is an extra price if you want to sit in nor did she give me the option to choose to sit in or takeaway so I wouldn’t have known. So as I sat down and begun eating, waiting for my friend, she made a point of coming up to me and telling me that I cannot sit in here. I asked why and she said “you can’t sit in here if you haven’t paid sit-in prices you will have to go outside”. To which I replied “I had no idea that was even thing” (because let’s be honest how ridiculous that you have to pay extra for a plate you don’t even keep!). I felt very humiliated as several people were looking but decided to get up wait for my friend, then we swiftly exited. Me and my friend both work in hospitality and agreed as we left that if our customer service skills were that poor we would have been fired. I can’t say we’ll ever come in there again as we’ve been a few times, all in which the staff were miserable but this time they were blatantly rude. As for the food it was mid and luke warm hence the 1 star, I cannot comment on the atmosphere as I was evicted not even a bite after I sat down. Disappointed to say the least.
Jo — Google review
Called into here for breakfast while waiting on Morrisons opening. The Bap and cold meat buttered roll was a massive disappointment. Lack of meat and butter meant it felt like I was eating a dry bap, for which I'd just paid £5.60, steep! I brought it to the attention of the staff and was told this is what you get. Emailed it to the head office, recieved an apology and £10 in vouchers

Chatwins in Upton is a bakery chain known for its delicious cakes, savory items like sausage rolls, and coffee. It's a popular stop for those visiting the hospital nearby, offering tasty and filling baps as well as doorstep toast for little ones. The staff is attentive and caring, making it a pleasant dining experience. One of their new offerings is the Roast in a box, which includes meat slices, roast potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, crackling & gravy to go.
Absolutely fantastic service and food, my absolute favourite has to be the fully loaded carvery wrap (see picture), but their rolls, baps and cakes are stunning as well!

My husband found this place last year when we were at the Countess and I was waiting for my labor to kick off and he needed a warm meal. Now each time we come to the hospital for baby appointments this is our lunch stop. The baps are so tasty and filling that we devour them before even thinking of taking a photo. The doorstep toast is a nice bonus for our little one who loves to munch on bread. Very nice and caring staff who were always attentive to our needs. The only downside is there is no changing facilities, which is understandable being such a small place. Unfortunately wheelchairs also can't access the bathroom area.

I usually love the upton chatwins and would give it 5 stars, but today was an exception. Ordered the usual pork bap as the cut is always great and they load on the apple sauce and stuffing. For £5.50 i expect the quality i always get but today it was disappointing. I received near to no apple sauce and a tiny amount of stuffing compared to what i normally get (keep in mind i ask for a lot). So this was again a disappointment for the price and i hope i dont experience it again.

Sweet Elements in Chester is a charming patisserie known for its exquisitely crafted pastries and cakes. The shop, run to exacting standards by Cordon Bleu-trained Faye, offers beautifully intricate creations such as mousse-filled chocolate, raspberry and caramel vegan cake, and carrot cake dipped in chocolate. Visitors praise the spotless shop and friendly owners who provide fantastic service. Despite a small menu of savories, the offerings are well-chosen and delicious.
These are some beautifully intricate and well executed pastries and cakes. They are around £6 each. Given the quality of the food I found that to be a fair and reasonable price. The shop is spotless and is clearly run to an exacting standard. The owners were very friendly. The Paris Brest was the best I have had in the UK and I would feel confident that every item is equally accomplished. Go to places like these, no chain restaurants and enjoy a superior offering

Absolutely amazing place, ordered a special 40th cake for my wife from here and totally blew me away at how it turned out, everyone at the party loved the cake, inside was half white chocolate and half normal chocolate, I honestly can’t give this place enough praise and will defo be back. Thankyou Jessica for adding to my wife’s special day 👍🍾

An amazing 18th birthday cake for my daughter that looked stunning and tasted just as good, if not better, than it looked. Will definitely recommend.
