History Museums
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, located in the heart of the city on Castle Wynd, offers a contemporary space showcasing collections ranging from geology and natural history to art and archaeology. The museum is just one of many attractions in close proximity, including the Highland Aviation Museum, the Highlanders Museum, and the Loch Ness Centre. Visitors can also explore day trip options such as the Highland Wildlife Park or local castle tours.
We needed to kill some time so decided to pay a visit to the museum and it was amazing! Its not often you find a museum that focuses solely on the UK and it was wonderful to have a full Scottish history way back to the creation of the land. I loved seeing all the old stone carvings and natural history displays of Scottish wildlife especially as we could point out what we had seen during our holiday. It’s free to enter and they ask for donations, well worth a visit. Plus there is a cafe but we had already eaten.
Ferne G — Google review
If you fancy a quick bit of Scottish history for free then this museum would be great for you - not a massive museum but plenty to see and read across a wide variety of time periods. The art gallery was quite small and unimpressive but I'm sure somebody likes it.
Juan — Google review
Lovely place to spend an hour or two as part of a trip to Inverness. Quiet location right in the centre of the city with a wide range of exhibits from natural history to ancient pottery finds. Easy to get to, close to the river. Well worth a visit.
Colette H — Google review
What a gem! I thought the exhibits were thoughtfully laid out. I went to get a better overview of Scottish Highlands history. I wish I had had more time to spend there! When I left I had a better sense of what to Google and the questions I need to ask to learn more about this amazing area!!! I learnt so much in the limited time I had. Thank you!!!
E S — Google review
This small regional museum features natural, ancient and modern history. On display are artefacts used by humans who have inhabited the area since 6500 BCE. There are plenty of well-written and informative story boards to assist our understanding of this dynamic environment. Highly recommend a visit 👍👍👍
D F — Google review
Incredible museum and gallery. Exquisite artefacts, insightful information and engaging curation. Well, well worth a visit. It would be great to see the Dunrobin artefacts respectfully displayed here for the worth of the nation 😉
Leanne V — Google review
A fascinating journey through Highland history and culture. The exhibits are well-curated and cover everything from geology to the Jacobites. The free entry and friendly staff make it a must-see for anyone visiting Inverness. A real gem!
William F — Google review
Wonderful museum. Artifacts as well as a close-up of a few of the animals and birds native to Scotland. I especially loved that information was displayed in English and Gaelic. My visit included a spoon exhibition!Quite interesting and beautifully displayed. The staff members were very pleasant. Free entry, but please make a donation if able!

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Local history museum
Inverness Castle, a majestic 1800s red sandstone fortress, stands proudly atop the cliffs overlooking the River Ness. Despite its turbulent past, including destruction after the Battle of Culloden, the castle has been restored to its former glory. Visitors can explore its lush grounds and enjoy panoramic views of Inverness city center and the river. The castle's unique architecture and rich history make it a must-see attraction in Scotland.
Inverness is a beautiful and charming city with so much to offer. The scenery around the area is stunning, from the nearby Loch Ness to the rolling hills and historic sites. The city itself feels welcoming and easy to explore, with plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or just a relaxing getaway, Inverness has something for everyone. The locals are friendly, and the vibe is peaceful yet lively enough to keep you entertained.
Abhishek A — Google review
Currently undergoing renovation there is no access to the interior of this, relatively modern castle. Closed or not it does dominate views of the River Nis and can be seen easily along Nis Walk
Bernard S — Google review
Only saw from the outside but was spectacular colourant looks new compared to some we have seen.
Sandy P — Google review
In my previous reviews also I have said the same thing that all castles are almost similar and they have nothing extraordinary to showcase except that they are castles & that’s it. The only one castle to see is the Edinburgh Castle on top of the Hill. Worth seeing. But if you can’t reach Edinburgh then any castle is good to see. As we were doing a road trip & we saw 3-4 castles. The only EXCEPTIONAL CASTLE was Edinburgh Castle. Must visit!!

The castle on 5/20/23 is undergoing restoration work and will be opened in a year or so as city services. It is a good walk around and is easily in the middle of the nightlife. There are storage and bars nearby open seven days a week. The Edinburgh Museum and Art Gallery are part of the same complex. I recommend a visit there.
Charles S — Google review
Not currently open to the public. You can walk up the hill to the castle and get great views of the city and river. There are some tablets set in the ground on the city side near the car park which have some interesting historical facts about the castle. It is going to be open to the public in the next few years.
Simon N — Google review
The following review is based on a pre-pandemic trip going old school and only using paper maps and brochures to find places to stop at on a 3-week adventure to Ireland, Scotland, and England. No cell phone or internet. We were not able to enter the castle but were able to walk around the grounds when we visited. The castle blends into the hill side so it looks like it is part of the terrain at some vantage points. If coming from the west, you can get some great shots from the river when walking across the foot bridge. It would have been cool to see inside but even walking around the outside of the castle was fun and the town around the castle has some great shops and restaurants. In our visit we were lucky enough to have live music at one of the pubs.

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
Inverness Cathedral, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a Victorian Episcopalian church constructed with red stone and granite. Situated close to the castle and overlooking the River Ness, it stands as one of Scotland's most beautiful churches. The cathedral boasts fine stained-glass windows, ornate interior furnishings, and intricate stone carvings. As the northernmost diocese of the Scottish Episcopal Church, it continues to hold regular services.
Inverness Cathedral, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a great place for anyone who appreciates history and design. The architecture is stunning, with intricate details that reflect the rich history of the area. While there is a small spot for kids to play, it might not hold their attention for long, as the cathedral is more focused on its historical and architectural beauty. For history and design lovers, however, it's a must-visit, offering a peaceful and reflective atmosphere.
Barham A — Google review
This cathedral is beautiful! You do have to pay to actually walk around the cathedral, but it is a small pay (I paid £6 as an 18+). It’s definitely worth visiting this cathedral as the stain glasses are beautiful and the history behind it is special. I am not sharing much photos as I do not want to spoil the inside of this cathedral. I definitely recommend coming here and taking the time to walk around inside it.
Elizabeth — Google review
Inverness Cathedral is such a stunning and peaceful place to visit. The architecture is impressive, with lovely stained glass windows and detailed stonework that give it a special charm. Inside, it feels calm and welcoming — perfect for a quiet moment of reflection. The location is fantastic, right on the banks of the River Ness, so you can enjoy a scenic walk before or after visiting. The volunteers are friendly and happy to share the history of the cathedral, which makes the experience even more meaningful. Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or just looking for a peaceful spot in Inverness, this cathedral is well worth a visit.
Anitha K — Google review
new on the scale of cathedrals we seen in UK ...definitely worth a visit ...Inverness Cathedral, dedicated to St Andrew, was built in the 19th century, with its foundation stone laid in 1866 and opening for services in 1869. It was finally consecrated in 1874 after the remaining debt was paid off. The cathedral serves as the Mother Church for the Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness within the Scottish Episcopal Church.
Warren B — Google review
A nice little Cathedral. There's some great information inside ( self guided tour ) some beautiful woodworking. The only disappointment is it seems overrun with 'nick nacks' While I understand it's a working church. It takes away from the feel of the expierence.

Beautiful church and everyone there was so kind and informative. They explained so much. Just a lovley experience.

Inverness Railway Station is conveniently located about a mile from the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, just a 5-minute walk from Station Square. The station offers flights to various UK cities and international destinations. It features well-sized platforms with a beautiful glass canopy allowing natural light in. Despite some disorganization at times, the staff are generally helpful. Amenities include a coffee shop, luggage storage, wifi access, and clean toilets.
All 5 stars are for the track supervisor “Jon”. He helped my wife and I today after getting zero assistance from the “oh so pleasant” lady at the ticket office a few days prior. Thanks for going out of your way to help us out friend. As I said, “you’re a good man”…🙏🏼
Mark G — Google review
This was a great station for both arrival and departure, with well-sized platforms for the trains! Station canopy is built from beautiful glass architecture, area not underneath is lit well by the sun and many platforms are available for the highland capital. Departure boards are up to date and even though the staff were nice, they were not organized since only a few other people in queue and they could not be ready for me to buy a plusbus after nearly 10 minutes.
K. P — Google review
This is a small yet adequately spacious station with an open layout that allows plenty of room to maneuver. It avoids the claustrophobic feeling all too common among train stations in various parts of the world. This one seems right-sized relative to the activity level. The stored luggage facility here was particularly useful for us as we were able to leave our luggage here on our last day in Inverness after we had checked out of our AirBnB. We were able to conveniently pick up our bags just before our train to the airport. The connections to other major cities in Scotland from here are quite useful. We did our ticketing via the kiosks there. They were in good working order and accessible the three times we used the station. We bought our local tickets directly at the kiosk and we bought our intercity tickets on-line to claim them at the kiosk. We had no problems. The building is not an architectural gem by any means and it does show its age in many ways. But it's kept up well enough and it serves its purpose.
Mark K — Google review
Toilets are lovely and clean. Don't mind paying 50p to use them but if anyone who has any influence there is reading these reviews please, please, please join the 21st century and go digital for the payments instead of cash! Literally, "tap and go" would be so much better.
Elaine I — Google review
I'm not a big fan of this station. The station looks run down and worst of all they charge for the toilets. I had to hold it in while waiting for my train. Not pleasant. The member of staff I meet at ticket desk was not friendly or accomidating. Overall very poor experiences.
Max H — Google review
Storage lockers are out of service (and have been for some while). Frustrating if you’re taking the Caledonian Sleeper. There are alternatives in town but some close at 6pm and others use apps which charge per baggage day rates (less good if you’ve only got a few hours to kill before your journey).
Daniel C — Google review
Very clean and spacious station, most large station's make a charge for toilet facilities, which is reasonable.
Malcolm G — Google review
Just a normal train station, not very pretty or particularly clean and the toilets cost money (20p). The staff are happy and friendly. When we went, our train was on time and we found the station fine. We got lost on the way from the station to the bus stop though and missed the bus. That's because the signs to the bus station are misleading. Better ask a member of staff or trust Maps to navigate.

If you're looking for a quintessential Scottish experience, head over to the Scottish Kiltmaker Visitor Centre on Huntly Street. This unique shopping destination offers more than just kilts; it's a cultural immersion into the history and significance of Scotland's traditional formal attire. You can explore various clan tartans on display and even witness skilled artisans crafting kilts in the on-site workshops.
My mother-in-law is a seamstress so we all decided to check out this museum. For something like a pound fifty we were able to tour their small museum. If your prudish, the video might be "problematic" as described elsewhere, but it's only a collection of clips of adverts and movies where kilts are featured. The video is quite old and pretty funny. The second half describes how kilts are made before you can go view the kilt-making area. For the price, it's totally worth the stop.
Jesse K — Google review
I really enjoyed going to this museum. My tour guide was very well informed and she seemed to be enjoying her job. We were shown a pretty problematic video, however she did offer us a trigger warning. But, they should really do away with this whole video and have it redone. They were helpful helping me find my family tartan and did have it in stock.
Annie C — Google review
It was a neat place to visit to learn more about the tartans and their history. I hope they will expand on the displays further as there is much history! Hugely thankful to the sales team that helped me find my family tartan and the woman who directed me to the map that had great detail on the clan locations and tartans. The whole team was very happy to answer questions too. Sadly my family’s tartan wasn’t included in the display.
Marisa B — Google review
Shocking levels of service, lazy and disinterested female senior member of staff. Beyond rude on the phone too, thoroughly condescending. Avoid at all costs
M S — Google review
The visit is not worth your time. Very little to show and an old film disrespectful of Scottish traditions. No thanks
Angelo T — Google review
The exposition was not so great as u would expect. I know it's only 2.5 pounds, but I imagine that adding a short guided tour between the kilts and uniforms the have in the exhibit, the tour could be more and more enjoyable. Anyway I loved their kilts and I bought one for me. It was not cheap but it had superb wool and realization
Piero D — Google review
Thank you for a beautiful job on my outfit. May 2019. I also ordered extra 2 yards. This week we laid my Auntie to rest and we drapped the extra cloth over her coffin.
Mark L — Google review
The shop is nicely laid even if quite eclectic (from genuine quality tartans and scottish wool products, to extremely touristy plastic bobbles). I regret not being able to see the weavers.

Caffè Nero is a global coffeehouse chain similar to Starbucks and Costa, offering a variety of light dishes and specially blended hot and cold drinks. The cafe provides a laptop-friendly environment with free wifi and power sockets, making it convenient for remote work or casual meetups. Additionally, some branches are dog-friendly, allowing for pet-friendly gatherings. While the cafe offers a good selection of reasonably priced coffee and food in warm and comfortable surroundings, seating can be limited due to its popularity.
My husband and I got coffee and pastries here twice during our honeymoon trip to Edinburgh. Each time, it was delicious! The pistachio croissants are a must-try. I highly recommend this coffee shop.

After a wonderful walking tour in icy cold weather we enjoyed Cappuccino and hot tea in relaxing atmosphere gazing at people walking outside. The place has a small selection of cakes and pastries and sandwiches. The staff is friendly and nice relaxing music played in the background.

The food is delicious but the staff is very sullen and when they do extra work they huff and puff and behave rudely. I think this will be my last time going there. If you want to encounter an unhappy ending, be prepared.
Ayşe D — Google review
worst capuccino this side of Milano I say. Taste of burned coffee, not even the 3rd sugar helped. Trainee totally lost and not really a front person.
RONALD P — Google review
The place is nice but the service needs proper training. The barista forget our order one minute after we placed the order. The place needs new chairs because the ones they have are in very bad shape.
Dorota E — Google review
Large inside so social distancing is comfortably possible. Good choice of searing and comfortable chairs. Coffee is well priced and strong with a good variety of options and alternatives to dairy. Also a tasty selection of cakes and alternate snacks. Comfortable atmosphere for both s short stop in or a long stay for chatting and relaxing. Well lit and wheelchair accessible.

Customers appreciate the loyalty points system and the convenient location near shops and hotels. The older store has garnered loyal regulars due to its welcoming team and great coffee offerings.

When it’s cold and wet, and Boxing Day, it was great to find this coffee shop open for business. Friendly staff and a wide array of snacks, coffee and tea, made for a good place for a coffee and a snack. As always, any loyalty points always counts, and I was able to add a few today. Just a minute walk from the hotel I was staying at, so a perfect location as well as for the shops. Well done to the staff too.

Had a mocha and a croissant, my two friends got hot chocolates and millionaire's slices. Cafe
Nestled within the historic Victorian Market, Café de Paulo is a delightful spot for breakfast enthusiasts. Open from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays and until 3 PM on Sundays, this charming café serves an all-day full Scottish breakfast alongside a tempting veggie option. The market itself, dating back to 1876, adds a unique backdrop as you sip your coffee and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Absolutely gorgeous food, with the full breakfast being a standout—it had a special touch that made it truly memorable. The coffee was amazing, rich, and full of flavor, the perfect complement to the meal. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were nothing short of phenomenal—attentive, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. Every detail, from the presentation to the service, exceeded expectations. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fantastic experience!

Our first breakfast in Scotland. We tried the traditional dish. Delicious. We didn't understand how the ordering system works, but managed to get food. Quiet place.
Carlos B — Google review
Café de Paulo is an absolute delight tucked away in the charming Victorian Market. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm, cozy, and welcoming. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and clearly take pride in both the food and service. I ordered a beautifully presented breakfast plate featuring fluffy pancakes topped with fresh strawberries, bananas, blueberries, a dusting of powdered sugar, and a drizzle of honey. The scrambled eggs on the side were creamy and perfectly seasoned—true comfort food. To complement the meal, I had a hot chocolate with the most stunning latte art I’ve seen. It was rich, velvety, and balanced—not too sweet, just how I like it. The attention to detail, from presentation to flavor, was impressive. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options too, which makes it accessible for everyone. Highly recommend this spot if you're in Inverness—whether you’re a local or just passing through, Café de Paulo is the kind of place you’ll want to come back to!

Great Location and ambience. Served by Martha. She's so nice and friendly..and smiley! Had a Blonde Pumpkin Spice Latte with Oat milk, Hazelnut and White Mocha! Loved the taste!
Ahmed I — Google review
I love coffee, and love Starbucks but this one oh NO. The coffee was terrible it was caramel latte and weak, I could see she put too much milk in and not enough caramel. Every table in the place that were free were dirty, had empty cups and rubbish all over. And the worst of all was the toilet it had old tampon applicators just lying on the floor next to the box. They were dirty the toilets were covered in urine just disgusting.
Iain Y — Google review
Great location, especially if you're using the chargers across the road in the car park. Not a dog-friendly Starbucks though, and no signs on the door to tell you otherwise. 0/10 for that alone, as it was raining heavily. Wasn't busy, nobody else appeared to care, staff terribly apologetic, but the franchisees rules are the rules, apparently...
Alasdair E — Google review
The coffee maybe good but be very careful if you are proposing to arrive by car. The car park is run by an organisation that delights in not having their payment machines working but their CCTV does work so they can send you a parking fine after your visit. This obviously happens quite frequently and the issue does not appear to be being addressed. I won't be going again.
Sheena T — Google review
Been here a few times and each time the coffee is disappointing. I’m a huge Starbucks fan but won’t be returning to this one any time soon. Staff aren’t friendly, service is poor and coffee is terrible. Tastes watered down and half the time the order is wrong. Direct yourself to another venue if you can.
Jessica S — Google review
I’ve visited the Inverness Starbucks a couple of times, and sadly the taste is disappointing. I drink a tiramisu iced latte every day at the Aberdeen branch, but I’ve never had the same flavour here no idea why, but it’s consistently worse, and the site is never clean but the service was good though!
Bharath V — Google review
Visited this Starbucks twice last week while on our way to Isle of Skye & then back & had to charge our car in the car park just opposite. Good coffee, refreshing cool drinks, fresh cakes, friendly staff & clean toilets.
Devikka M — Google review
Horrible. The staff here is TERRIBLE. No smile, argued with me about the way I ordered my drink...dirty tables everywhere. I travel a lot...i've been to Starbucks all of over the US, UK and Europe and this is BY FAR the worst experience I have ever had. These employees let you know that they don't want to be there...and the drinks they made for us were TERRIBLE. When we asked for some alterations the attitude we got was awful. Skip this location...you'll regret going.

Cafe
Grain and Grind Inverness is a charming café that offers high-quality coffee sourced from local roasters. The cafe also serves delicious brownies and ready-made sandwiches, making it a perfect spot to grab a quick bite. Visitors have praised the friendly customer service and recommended trying the vegan sausage roll with onion chutney. The atmosphere is described as quirky and inviting, with baristas who are sweet and accommodating.
Had breakfast in here and loved it. The coffee is absolutely outstanding - they have oat milk - and the mocha was done with real chocolate, super delicious. We also tried the breakfast bap and it was unreal, the tomato sauce on it is a nice touch. They have options of gluten free sweets, but no gluten free sandwiches. For sweet tries the lemon and coconut blondie and it was really good. Highly recommend and would defo come back!
DANIELA S — Google review
Cute little cafe with sandwich options and desserts, a few of which were gluten free! I had a bacon and cheese croissant which was so buttery and flaky. Would come again if I’m ever back in Inverness
Kelsie B — Google review
Best flat white I’ve had maybe ever! Breakfast bagel was delicious, well balanced, and generously portioned. Millionaire brownie felt incredibly indulgent and I regret nothing! Not too sweet, full of flavor and great texture/mouthfeel! There was no queue when I arrived (how?!), and the service was welcoming, friendly, and fast! I might live here now.
Dareus R — Google review
Very nice café well located and with a great choice of beverages and cakes. The staff is very friendly. They have gluten-free options as well.
Nathalie G — Google review
Outstanding specialty coffee with their own roasted beans, delicious cakes, very kind staff and bright venue. A must in Inverness
Josep A — Google review
Lovely relaxed friendly place with great coffee. Even with angry German tourists ( angry at the rain not the coffee ) it’s lovely So much better than the lines of Costa and Starbucks
Haisbro N — Google review
Great corner coffee shop. Mocha's were very tasty, some of the better ones we had all week while in Scotland. Had a strawberry shortcake bar of some type that was also very good. Good location near the river and downtown area.
Jason M — Google review

Absolutely loved this place. People friendly and welcomed us with open arms. I am a wheelchair user and this was the first time I could experience my Autistic daughter enjoying iceskating. She also felt very secure and safe here with people around her. We will return on our next holiday for more
Jean E — Google review
A basic single pad rink which caters heavily for curlers during their season. Also offers hockey and figure sessions, plus synchronized skating and a few public sessions. Often closes April to July when they put a floor down and host Strictly Inverness and a few other events before relaying ice for summer skate camps just before the curling season starts again.

Says they are open till 11pm, I phoned and no one answered, decided to travel 3 hours to go and no one is here, doors are locked and no one is around! I’ve wasted money and time but would have been nice to actually display Correct times on google as to prevent anyone wasting time and money for no reason!!!

Highland Top Team Jiu Jitsu is an excellent academy for learning Jiu Jitsu. The coach is very professional and communicative. I attended a couple of classes during my vacation and was greeted very warmly and friendly by both the coaches and the students. Congratulations, and many thank for your very much welcome and friendship.

Had a great game of Curling here for the second time. The ice is great, clean and keen. The changing room is dated and toilets are tired but the bar and seating area is good and the service from the staff is warm and friendly, the best of Scottish. Enjoyed a drink and food there too.

Very nice, but very cold if you are a spectator! Good hot chocolate 😋.
