Kumano-Nachi Taisha is a significant Shinto shrine situated in the Kumano Kodo UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is part of the Kumano Sanzan, which includes Kumano Hongu and Kumano Hayatama shrines. The area features ancient pilgrimage routes, with the Nakahechi pilgrimage route being the main path from Kyoto to Kumano since the 10th century. In 2004, these routes were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
This shrine felt calm and beautiful even on a rainy day after walking up the Daimonzaka slope. It was a bit crowded which is expected since it draws visitors in any weather. From here, you can walk further to reach the viewpoint of Nachi Waterfall and the iconic pagoda.

Walked on KK trail arriving at 2.00. It was Saturday so busy with local and foreigners alike. Amazing Shinto and Buddhist temple. I just loved the wooden structure of the temple. It's a large site on side of mountain so lots of stairs. The 3 tiered pagoda has only recently been opened again after being repainted. Be aware buses are packed. I managed to get on my bus while queuing but many many left behind and have to wait another hr. Down hill stops noon picked up. Waterfall beautiful.
Redfern R — Google review
Beautiful shrine. Amazing view. There are 3 levels to it: the grand shrine, the pagoda and the torii in front of the waterfall. Goshuin: 500¥

Beautiful temple and waterfall. Can also hike along the Kumano-kodo to another temple 1 hours walk from the main temple really worth it. About 40mins on the way back.
Charis P — Google review
This shrine is one of the Kumano Sanzan and famous for its location with the Nachi Waterfall. The shrine is quite normal but like the main shrine, you will need to walk many steps to reach its level (esp. from Waterfall level). You can just spend time on the pagoda and waterfall instead of here which are more scenic.
Eric C — Google review
Part of the world heritage shrine around Naichi. It's nestled high up in the mountains together with the pagodas with the falls

Beautiful temple. You must go through the Camphor holy tree. Kumano Nachi Taisha is a Shinto shrine and part of the UNESCO-designated World Heritage Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range of Japan
Emmanuel Q — Google review
This shrine was very calm and beautiful. You can make a wish while passing through in this 850year old tree that is very sacred. Here you can also have a nice view of the pagoda with the background of the Falls this was our highlight coming here in the region. We came up by car , just need to pay 800yen for the entry including parking. But if you are willing to come up by steep stairs you can easily park somewhere else where you only pay 400yen or 500yen.

Seiganto-ji is a centuries-old Buddhist temple featuring a striking three-story red pagoda, situated amidst the breathtaking backdrop of Nachi Falls. Nestled in a stunning natural setting of mountains and waterfalls, this spiritual place offers an outstanding view and warm hospitality. Visitors can access the temple by taking a bus or embarking on a scenic hike from the bottom.
Well, somewhat lesser known than the neighboring Kumano Nachi Taisha, this is actually where the most famous picture that shows up on many travel sites and books, rivaling Mt Fuji, Kyoto Pagoda and many others. Directly on the Kudo, it clearly is a favorite even past emperors had come here to stay for periods of time. The large modern acommodation facilities shows it still has good followings. Even saw a nice full sized Lexus parked in the middle of the temple--probably some of the richest monks we have actually seen in Japan!?😂😂😂
Jerome M — Google review
What a beautiful architecture. By looking at the temple you can literally feel the heritage! Most impressive building in the whole area. Even more impressive than the famous Pagode next door. My favourite! You can also enter the temple fir free. But please no pictures from inside.
Kevin B — Google review
After 5-days hike on the Kumano trail and reaching this last destination was rewarding. Seiganto-ji was nestle next to the hillside with plenty of greeneries surrounding it and the breathtaking Nachi waterfall at the back drop with clear blue skies. It is a view you would not miss. Plenty to see around the area if your legs can still walk. The serene Nachi Taisha Grand shrine is just a stone throw away with its own beauty.

20251030 - the temple is located near bus stop terminal and will have to climb stairs around 5 min to access. Along the way and at the top of the temple, you can enjoy nice view of nature, weather and the 1st view of nachi fall. It is easier to come to the temple and go down towards nachi fall attraction.

Extreme architectural structure and surroundings made this a must visit spot in Japan. It’s a Centuries-old Buddhist temple with a 3-story red pagoda set against the backdrop of the Nachi Falls. You can witness of mesmerizing view of Nachi fall from here. I went there in November last year & it was in under instruction. I couldn’t enter there but outside of the temple was also outstanding.

Beautiful pagoda with the view of the stunning Nachi falls. There’s a possibility to arrive here directly via car (parking at the top is 800 yen in October 25, and 500 yen a little bit bellow and you can climb by foot)

Shinto shrine
Hiro Shrine is a place of worship located at the foot of Nachi Falls, one of Japan's three major waterfalls. It was built to honor the deity of the waterfall and is a separate temple from Kumano Nachi Taisha. Visitors can enter the shrine for free, but there is a small fee to access the viewing platform. Despite potentially challenging weather conditions, visitors are rewarded with an increased flow of water in the falls.

It's a bargain at 300 yen, so I personally think it's worth visiting. (Original)

Hirojinja Shrine is a separate shrine to Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, which worships Nachi Falls as its object of worship. Nachi Falls is right in front of you. The waterfall itself is a sacred object, and there is no main shrine. There is no shrine, so you can worship directly at the waterfall. The drop to the basin of Nachi Falls is 133m, which ranks 12th in Japan, but it is the highest single-tier waterfall in Japan. If there had been no Haibutsu Kishaku in 1868 (first year of the Meiji era) that prohibited the syncretization of Shinto and Buddhism, or the ban on Shugendo in 1972, I wonder if the landscape would be different from what it is now. Waterfalls
Nachi Waterfall, located in Japan, is a stunning natural wonder with a height of 133 meters. It is considered the tallest individual waterfall in the country and consists of several streams that flow from Mount Ogumotori. The falls are surrounded by an old-growth forest, adding to their majestic beauty. The waterfall holds great cultural significance as it is revered as the sacred body of Hiro-jinja Shrine. Visitors can witness traditional events held at the falls in July and December each year.
Quite a unique experience. This is a must visit if you are along the coast of Wakayama. From the parking lot, there's a 100 metre pathway which leads to series of stairs (3-4 storeys) to get down to the viewpoint for the Nachi Falls. Expect to spend up to 30 minutes here not including the hike up to the Temple.

This is one of the must visit place in Japan. The view and the surrounding nature was awesome. The torii and the pagoda are in different places. For torii you have to go down the stairs from the parking area. And for the pagoda there is 15min hike through the stairs. But the view is really worth the hike.

Beautiful sacred place to visit in Japan. This is one of the places made you feel like it captures the spirits of Japan, keeping the tradition inseparable from nature. The lush green of the trees around already won my heart, not to mention the majestic shot of waterfalls like arrows. It can't help reminding me of the dragon gate. Further as I learned about the myth of Jimmu and the dragon statues providing the waters, I felt a deeper connection with this place. In any event, come to find your personal connection to this heritage!

It’s one of most scenic landmarks or sacred ground in Japan. Its verdure will definitely blow someone’s mind. Natures serenity gives you complete immovability. The waterfall itself so pulchritudinous that you reluctant to leave. Note: pagoda and falls are not in same place, therefore you have to go little uphill. I went there by car but majority goes by foot. Transportation: Easy accessible by both private or public transport. Parking & bus stoppages both are within 100m. Nachifall Entry:¥300 Parking: ¥500~¥1000

Beautiful waterfall only a short walk from the parking lot. Huge mature trees along the path. Another walking route from the parking lot takes you uphill to the pagoda around a small area with a few shops and cafe with views of the waterfall.

Absolutely breathtaking and deeply spiritual place. Nachi Waterfall is far more than just a scenic spot, it’s a sacred site surrounded by ancient forest, temples, and the peaceful sound of flowing water. I took the first bus 06.45am to arrive early in the morning andwalked down from Nachisan Shrine. The view of the waterfall from Seiganto-ji Temple was stunning, and the closer I got, the more powerful it felt. The energy here is calm, cleansing, and unforgettable.

Kumano Hayatama Taisha is a renowned Shinto shrine and pilgrimage site located next to the Kumano River, surrounded by lush woodland. As one of the Kumano Sanzan shrines, it has stood on the riverbank since at least the 12th century. While its buildings have been reconstructed recently, it houses ancient religious artifacts dating back to the 3rd century, showcasing its enduring significance in Japanese folklore.
It’s a bit walk from the train station and most shops are closed for business but it’s still nice to visit. The temple itself is magnificent and the surrounding area is beautiful.

One of the Kumano Sanzan (3 Grand Shrines of Kumano), it is the smallest but yet most accessible which is near to a railway station. The shrine is quite quiet on weekdays, and it does not have much to see other than the building itself. Would be a good start for the 3 Shrines Journey

Although the look of the museum is old, but don’t take the book by its cover. The fantastic dolphin show, the dolphin aquarium is awesome. U can pay 300yen for a bucket of fish to feed the dolphins My family definitely enjoyed our time there~
Titus N — Google review
It is quite a unique experience as this museum only focus on whale and dolphin, although the infrastructure looks quite old and not well maintained, you can see many shows performed by these sea animals and their trainer. At a small fee, you can feed and even touch these significant animals. However, as one of the rare locations in Japan which focus on whale / dolphin hunting, this museum also tells the story of hunting. It could be quite a mixed feeling if you are not only for fun.
Eric C — Google review
This is a surprising little gem of a place to see. It is a unique and rare opportunity to get up close to these magnificent animals. While Japan has a controversial history with whaling and hunting cetaceans, this museum did a great job of educating on them. There isn't a lot of western/foreign accommodations (i.e. everything is in Japanese) but you get the gist of things. The outdoor shows demonstrate the animals physical abilities, but it can get hot and not a lot of shade. If you're interested in touching the dolphins - they limit to 30 people and people rush to the opportunity after the show. It was more fun to feed them. All in all, great place to take the family!
Quan D — Google review
My wife and I had a great day in the museum, definitely worth a visit don't skip the whale show. Also you can feed whales and dolphins by yourself 300Yen 5 small fishes.
Darko V — Google review
Stop abusing animals! What is happening in your town is not only a crime against wildlife — it is a crime against humanity. By killing these animals, you are destroying the balance of the entire ocean’s ecosystem. Anyone who turns a blind eye to this brutality or supports a business built on the blood of defenseless creatures becomes part of this violence. This is inhumane, monstrous, and absolutely unacceptable.

Fudarakusan-ji Temple, part of the Tendai sect, is situated in Oaza Hamanomiya, Nachikatsuura Town. Legend has it that the temple was established by a monk who arrived from India during Emperor Nintoku's reign. The temple houses an important cultural artifact - a Gohonzon featuring a three-faced, eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon.
This temple complex in Nachi is located very close to the Nachi railway station and it features a nice shrine with just wonderful priests, that are very helpful and explaining the symbols and the history of this place. The temple is pronounced Fudarakusan-ji (Fudarakusanji). The mountain name is "Shirakabayama." A branch temple of Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple, this ancient temple was founded by the monk Nakedō and is a World Heritage Site. It is famous as the starting point for many monks who set off on their journey to Fudaraku. The Fudaraku voyage was a form of martyrdom, carried out in prayer for reaching Fudaraku, the southern Pure Land where Kannon Bodhisattva, the Buddha of mercy, resides. In the main hall, you can worship the principal image, and temple seals and amulets are available for purchase. Most of them departed from this Todarakusan Temple. When I first read the explanation, I was so blown away I couldn't understand what they were saying. I later learned that it was a story that had also been used in works I had read in the past, such as Morohoshi Daijiro and Fujiko's sci-fi short story Heisei Pompoko. I should also read Inoue Yasushi's book about Konkobo, who survives once but is forced back onto the boat. Within the temple grounds is a restored Todaraku boat surrounded by torii gates, which appears to be influenced by Kumano faith, and on the mountain behind it is the grave of Taira no Koremori. Embark on the Ki-no-Matsushima Cruising tour, a 40-minute scenic journey around the picturesque Katsuura Bay. Marvel at over 130 islands, each resembling animals like Camel Rock and Lion Island. The cruise offers a unique perspective of this geological wonder, with comfortable seating and refreshing sea breezes. While the tour follows a specific route without dolphin or whale sightings, it provides an audio guide in Japanese and stops at Taiji for those interested in visiting the Whale Museum.
A beautiful excursion which takes you around many islands. Last 1 hour, plenty of parking nearby, no need book ahead of time.

I was able to see Hotel Urashima, where I was planning to stay, from the outside. Anyone who goes here is absolutely disgusting. How would you like to caged up all day and only allowed out to play with tourists. I have sorted with dolphins ethically. Scuba dived with Whale sharks ethically. And kayaked with Orca ethically. It is possible and way more rewarding when you spend the time and effort and get lucky to be in the same place as these beautiful wild creatures which deserve to live free and wild. Historical landmark
Kumano Kodo, specifically the Nakahechi Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route, is a historic pilgrimage path dating back to the Heian period. The route is renowned for its well-preserved appearance, featuring moss-covered stone steps and dense trees along its 640-meter stretch. Walking this ancient path offers an immersive experience flanked by towering cedar trees. Visitors can encounter notable landmarks such as an 800-year-old cedar tree pair and quaint shops along the way.

Beautiful hiking who lead to Nachi's waterfall. If you pass by to Kii-Katsuura, you have to do this. It is clearly one of the most beautiful spot in Japan. It is easy to take a bus from Kii-Katsuura station and go down to the bus stop who will lead to this amazing hiking. It took 20 minutes by bus and you have the tourist information office just in front the bus tycket office, you can't miss it. The hiking who lead to the waterfall is totally free, bus tycket one way is around 600 yen. Notice that this trails could be difficult for old people due to the stairs.

Buddhist temple
Seiganto-ji Temple, home to the iconic Sanjuno-to 3-Storied Pagoda, is a remarkable site that beautifully embodies the fusion of Shinto and Buddhist traditions. Originally linked with Kumano Nachi Taisha, this temple has evolved over centuries, especially during the Edo period when numerous shaso-bosha emerged in its vicinity. The pagoda offers breathtaking views alongside the stunning Nachi Waterfall—an ideal backdrop for your Instagram photos!
Highly recommended to visit the pagoda and surrounding shrines when visiting the Nachi Waterfall. Expect to spend up to 60 minutes to hike from the Nachi Falls parking lot. There are bamboo poles that are available for use if you need hiking assistance as the stair heights are a bit uneven. Great views of the Pagoda beside the Nachi falls when you arrive at the top.

This was a once in a lifetime experience for us. After seeing all the images on Google and what have you, hiking up to this was breathtaking and well worth our Kumano Kodo hike. The views are spectacular and the waterfall is amazing. I would highly recommend visiting this location, whether it be by hiking or by bus from Katsuura.
Matthew — Google review
I slightly prefer the view near the waterfall. Despite that I cannot undermine the beauty of the pagoda lining up with the waterfall, it’s a stunning view and the best place to get THE picture for your IG post. Go up the stairs near the ramp and go to the back of the platform in front of the large building. Have someone take a picture from that corner while you are standing on the stairs in front of the pagoda.
David L — Google review
Quite recommended to visit when you are visiting the Nachi waterfall, as here you can have a scenic view of the waterfall with traditional human-made structures which constitute a very good scene. You can pay a small amount of the ticket fee so that you can ride up the pagoda to take portrait with waterfall at better angle.

Shinto shrine
Nestled within the sacred grounds of Kumano Nachi Taisha, Mi'agatahiko-sha Shrine is a hidden gem that pays homage to Yatagarasu, the legendary three-legged crow revered as a divine messenger. Established in 1867, this shrine offers visitors an opportunity to collect unique goshuin or sacred seals, including one specifically from Mi'agatahiko-sha itself.
(Translated by Google) This is Miagata no Hikosha. The enshrined deity is Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto, commonly known as Yatagarasu. I will omit the legend of Yatagarasu. By the way, the Yatagarasu is also used as the emblem of the intelligence units of the Land, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces (Ministry of Defense Intelligence Headquarters Radio Division, Ground Self-Defense Force Central Intelligence Corps, Maritime Self-Defense Force's Fleet Intelligence Group and 3rd Minesweeper Squadron, Air Self-Defense Force's Tsukijo Base 6th Squadron, etc.), so if you are interested, please check it out. In addition, Kumano Nachi Taisha is one of the three Kumano shrines, along with Kumano Hongu Taisha in Tanabe City and Kumano Hayatama Taisha in Shingu City, and is the headquarters of the approximately 4,000 Kumano Shrines nationwide. This land has a long history as a sacred place for Kumano worship. Originally, it was a large training hall for the syncretization of Shinto and Buddhism centered on Nachi Falls, but due to the policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, it was separated into Seigantoji Temple and Nachi Taisha Shrine. Furthermore, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha are collectively called the Kumano Sanzan, and Seigantoji Temple is also included in these three mountains. By the way, the order to visit the three mountains is Kumano Hongu Taisha → Kumano Hayatama Taisha → Kumano Nachi Taisha, which is said to be the order in which you can get the most blessings. The gods of Kumano were rooted in nature worship, but from the Nara period to the Heian period, Kumano also became a sacred place for Buddhism, esoteric Buddhism, and Shugendo, and became a sacred place for the syncretization of Shintoism and Buddhism.

The Kumano Kodo Information Center in Tanabe, the gateway to the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail, is a helpful starting point for exploring this historic route. The staff are known for their assistance and even offer a passport for stamping at various waypoints along the trail. The center provides excellent maps and information in English, making it convenient for visitors to plan their journey.
Essential stop before starting your Kumano Kodo (Nakahechi) hike / walk to get a booklet (¥100) if you plan to collect stamps. The place also has some Kumano Kodo artifacts and sells Montbell hiking gear.
Ced A — Google review
What a huge disappointment! I was waiting to go here to get maps and a stamp book and lots of information. NOTHING!!!!!The lady was totally disengaged! When I asked about maps, I got given a brochure booklet, which, while nice, is not a daily walk map! Or even a stage map. I approached her 3 times, and no one else was asking. She didn't have a queue or anything. Far from busy! Yet a Japanese lady walked in she got up from her seat, ran over to her , enthusiastically spoke to her for a few minutes, and then resumed her seat behind the desk. I had planned and waited 6 months to get to this place. I was under impression from their very own website that trail maps, etc, were available. There was nothing anywhere around inside to pick up. Seating area, toilets beside, wall map. Don't go expecting ANYTHING!!!!!!!

Katsuura Gyoko Nigiwai-Ichiba is a vibrant market located within the Nachi-Katsuura Fishing Port, renowned for its abundant tuna supply. The market offers an array of fresh seafood and local Wakayama products, with eight restaurants serving various tuna dishes such as sashimi, sushi, and deep-fried cutlets. Visitors can also purchase super fresh tuna, artisanal local products, and organic produce while enjoying free samples and a tuna cutting show.
There is one restaurant with two vegan options. They serve a vegan curry and a set of different plates (miso soup, rice with vegetables and tofu). The food was really tasty.

Tried two different restaurants inside of this place and unfortunately they are both a tourist trap. The place being a fish yard DOES NOT provide fresh seafood and the prices are really high. Just about a 3min walk there are other restaurants that are much cheaper and provide excellent meals.

Well worth the visit here for some super fresh maguro and there is no tourist crowds like in Tokyo. There’s a foot spa outside if the walk is too much but honestly the market is so small you won’t be tired from the walk. There a souvenir shop which sells local delicacies and Wakayama produce.

What an experience and so civilised as auction starts at 7am, not an ungodly hour. It is very low key and laid back. Tunas are arranged according to size a d shoppers go around using their pick to lift the fish to ascertain the weight whilst with the bigger sizes, they check the cut off tail for freshness and quality. Next Door is a small arcade that opens at 10am with a souvenir shop and best of all a few tiny restaurants selling fresh tuna prepared in different ways which you could eat there or takeaway. We bought sushi with various cuts of tuna to eat on the train to Osaka, laced with shiso leaved. It was truly delicious.

The owner of the shop even shared some miso soup secrets with me! I saw lots of local people come in and buy lots of tuna to take home, so you know it’s good!

Nature & Parks
Nachikogen Park is an incredibly peaceful and solitary green space, adorned with a small number of untamed deer. The park boasts an exquisite and sanitary public restroom, embellished with fresh blossoms. Regrettably, the lack of visitors diminishes its potential appreciation; this splendid park showcases vast expanses and captivating stone trails for exploration. A lookout point grants panoramic views of the valley and a fascinating 1970s-built Nachi Falls.
Really serene park with no one else around except for a few wild deer. Beautiful and clean punlic toilet with fresh flowers! It is sad that not many people come here because it is a really nice park with big open spaces and interesting stone paths to explore. There is a lookout over the valley and nachi falls built in the 1970's which is really cool. There should be local festivals and events held here because the huge open spaces are perfect. I wish the massive slide was still working, it is very rusted and no longer works.. Very good atmosphere on top of a mountain, a great place to sleep in your car overnight or possibly set up a tent on the grass. Thank you to the people that clean and maintain this park because it is a real hidden gem 🙏.

Google review
A beach that time forgot. If you're just passing by and want to take a quick dip it's fine. Otherwise not at all worth a special trip.

(Translated by Google) This is the beach where Hatsuko Motobe, a very famous YouTuber who is based in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture and is working hard, went to see the Kairos rocket launch in the thumbnail video of ``Will the rocket launch be a success?'' hey! It also introduces the nearby "Butsutsu River". The coast is also very beautiful. For more information, please watch Hatsuko Motobe's YouTube video. (Translated by Google) The beautiful sea and river are the best! I personally felt that the shallow waters make it a great place for children to try swimming for the first time. There isn't much parking, but the parking lot is free, so no complaints. The free water showers are outside and shared by both men and women. There are lockers in the changing rooms, which are clean. We brought our own food with us. There was a vending machine nearby for drinks. Follow the rules and have fun!

(Translated by Google) It's a private beach in western Japan that anyone can use⛱️. It's the best. It's shallow so even children can swim without worry. Blue Beach Nachi⛱️ is also beautiful, but this is a hidden local beach. Free parking, free showers, changing rooms, and toilets. There are no shops, so buy them at a nearby convenience store.

There are no beach huts, so it's best to do some shopping at a convenience store before going. (Original)

(Translated by Google) It's amazing! The inland sea is calm and the low tide makes it very safe, and even small children can have lots of fun on the beach. I definitely want to go again.

(Translated by Google) It is a beach with few people who enter through a narrow alley. I can barely fit a 4WD vehicle. There is nothing available so you need to bring your own water. Anyway, it's good if you want to enjoy a sense of privacy. There is a station at the entrance to the beach, and it's a great place to take photos, with the sea stretching out in front of you like in front of Kamakura High School.

(Translated by Google) Certainly there are not many people. Camping and barbecues are prohibited. The old man prohibits the use of cassette stoves and monitors them. The sea is not beautiful either. There seems to be a lot of sediment probably because of the inlet. A river flows nearby. Looks interesting to explore by canoe or rubber boat! The guy watching said there were a lot of people coming to fish, but he'd never seen anyone catch anything. The old men also seem to have a lot of free time. The toilet near the beach seems to be Botton. There was also a changing room. The shower was free, but it was water. There is also a parking lot. It looks like 4 or 5 cars will be stopped. An old man said that the toilet at the station was clean. It would be a great place if you could go camping.

(Translated by Google) The sea was a little dirty considering it's a beach in this area. The gravel and stones made it painful to walk on, and I felt uncomfortable without swimming goggles. It was good that there were no people, but I guess it's proportional to the number of customers.

The sea matched the blue sky and was even more beautiful than my son saw on the map.
