This is one of the oldest bhavana at Visva-Bharati. This bhavana was started by gurudev Rabindranath Thakur. It is a very well maintained and well equipped bhavan. There are many departments situated in this bhavana like History of art,sculpture, glass & ceramic,painting, and graphic art. It was established in 1919 . Many famous artists like Nandalal Bosu, Somnath Hore,K. K. Subranamyam, Ramkinkar Baij, Satyajit Ray were associated with this bhavana. Many world famous sculptures by Mr. Baij is like Gandhi, Buddha, Sujata are situated here.

Visit inside is not allowwd. So only thing available to see is buildings and some art work from outside. Hence waste of time, place and money. The toto guys will take 1000 Rs just to show you around Shantiniketan which i feel is very expensive. But as no entry allowed inside post COVID in 2021, wasting Rs 1000 over seeing buildings from outside in a toto is jist waste of time & money.

Kala Bhavana,institute of Art ,a reputed wing of Visva Bharati ,a global University established by Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore. Situated at Santiniketan,WB,India . Interested persons may visit Kala Bhavana throughout the year,but the period Nov to March is preferable. Easily accessible from Durgapur and Kolkata airports . For accommodation besides their own guest house, there are a large number of hotels,resorts,homestays to accommodate the visitors.

I was told at the entrance that the only day I can visit the place is Sunday. So I thought I was hopeless! But I asked the permission to visit at the office, and thanks to their kind availability I could see the artworks and buildings of the art school. I feel lucky and thankful. The value of this place is immense and what's going on inside with students from all countries is just so great.

We visited here on 10th August on a heritage walk. My first time in this beautiful university. Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of this place.

It was an amazing experience to visit the memorials and buildings once created by Rabindranath Tagore and his father Debendranath Tagore. From the place where Debendranath Tagore found peace (chatimtala) to the tree where Rabindranath Tagore started teaching kids under the clear blue sky, everything was so mesmerizing, we were absolutely taken back to those times. We visited the 5 massive palaces built by Rabindranath Tagore and various departments like Arts and Music. Although we were'nt allowed inside due to some restrictions, we clicked a lot of pictures and enjoyed our stay at Santiniketan. Looking forward to visit one more time.

Visva Bharati University is one of the oldest and traditional universities of the country. Arts, music, etc. are taught under this university. I had the opportunity to visit this university once, the world famous poet Rabindranath Tagore's memory is hidden inside this university campus. The presence of ancient trees, ancient sculptures, chirping of birds, clear sky inside this campus is like a strange joy that gives peace to the mind.

At the day of Holi we had go there, this entire area is totally silent and peaceful but just because of Holi day it was very noice for crowd . Otherwise if you go there some another day you can find peace and spent a quality time with your loved ones.🫰

Woah! What a place and had a great experience. It is a calm and peaceful place where we get to know a lot about Rabindranath Tagore and his life. We can park our car and hire a Toto (auto) and the driver will take you around the campus and explain details about the significance of the place. Very friendly people. Clean and well maintained. Must visit to spend a day away from city life. Hand made artifacts are sold at a market nearby. The restaurant are next level there and serve amazing food at affordable prices.

A beautiful museum to get to know about one of the biggest gems Bengal has produced. This museum made me dive into an unknown part of history that i wasn't aware of. Being a Bengali, I just knew till Rabindranath Tagore the poet and visionary, this tour of the museum with the hidden stories of his past, his family tree, and the artifacts from that era made me realise the depth of him being given that importance because he definitely deserved it wholeheartedly. A must visit for those who are true enthusiasts of history and culture.

Visiting Rabindra Bhavana and the Uttarayan Complex in Shantiniketan doesn’t feel like being in a regular museum—it feels like stepping into the living memory of Rabindranath Tagore. Everywhere you go, there’s something that reflects his presence—not only his works, but also the spaces where he thought, created, and lived. Rabindra Bhavana itself is like a treasure chest. There are over 1,500 of his paintings, shelves full of letters, manuscripts, photographs, and even his old recordings and personal belongings. These little details make you feel closer to him, the man behind the global fame of “Kaviguru.” The exhibition space, “Vichitra,” adds more layers, each show highlighting a different side of his life—poet, painter, reformer, thinker. Walking through the red brick walls and wide verandas of these houses, I didn’t feel like a tourist but like a guest in Tagore’s world. Every corner here reflects his philosophy of blending tradition with innovation. Even the light feels different—it doesn’t just fall, it lingers, like a memory. Rabindra Bhavana and Uttarayan aren’t places to rush through. They’re places to absorb slowly, step by step, like reading through a poem. By the time I left, I felt that Tagore was still here—not a figure distant in history, but alive in the air, the trees, the walls, and the quiet rhythm of Shantiniketan itself.

You must visit Tagore’s Houses if you come to Shantiniketan. This is a heritage for Bengalis. But, previously, people were allowed to enter inside the house, but now it’s restricted.

One of the Bengal underrated and ignored architecture. The house of Tagore in Shantiniketan and is inside the "Rabindra Museum". Normally one is not allowed to go inside the house. You are supposed to look it from a distance. This place looks more beautiful during winter season, when the place is filled with flowers and the sunlight is quite low.

A must visit for those who come to Shantiniketan to know more about Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and his Visva-Bharati. The Uttarayan complex has many houses where Tagore lived. It has many things related to the memories of Tagore. The museum preserves the replica of the Noble Prize given to Tagore, costumes and personal belongings, pen, ink bottle, colour, brushes and art materials, utensils, spectacles, watch, gifts received from World over, rare photographs and manuscripts in his own hand writings. Tagore's car is also preserved in this compound. The architecture of the houses like Shyamali, Punashcha, Udayan, Konark and Udichi will simply make you think about Tagore's concept.

Every Bengalis should visit this place in his lifetime once. So much greenery. Calm and quiet place. You will surely be amazed to see where Rabi Thakur spent his life. There are five houses.

A reasonably large area with plenty of trees and a few small water bodies are fenced. There are nearly hunderd deers inside this sanctuary. It's a very pleasant place to spend an hour or so if the weather is mild. The best time is two feeding hours, one in the morning and another at around 3 pm. All the deers come out in the open. Sometimes a few deers jump over the fence and roam around freely, which is immensely enjoyable, specially for the kids. The entry ticket counter closes sharp at 3-30 pm and the the main gate closes at 4 pm.

Bolpur is the ideal place for outing and it is hardly 3-4 hours drive from Kolkata. Shanti Niketan is the main place to visit while you are visiting Bolpur, and in Shanti Niketan there were many beautiful places, Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary is one of them. The place is full of large trees and green surroundings. The place is famous for its Deer park, almost more than 100 deer's lives there inside the Sanctuary. They are well maintained and while visit, they will come near you. The place is also ideal for family picnic, and you can enjoy the time over there. Children friendly place where they can see the wildlife very near and enjoy their time. Highly recommended to go if you are in Shanti Niketan, then you must visit Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nice place, lots of deer gathered in a small area, near the gate. Little numbers of birds are visible, but there are some colorful birds too. The negative point is that due to the lack of maintenance, the authority has closed a major part of the sanctuary and left a very little front part of the sanctuary open. Entry fee is Rs-10 till now.

Hard to believe that there is such a beautiful and secluded forest just beside Visva Bharati and in the heart of Shantiniketan. However, getting there using the Google Map navigation turned out to be bit of a problem. About 3 times, we ended up taking wrong turns and landing either in a very short alley or a closed road. Asking the local people was not of much help. So, the best is if you take a toto from your hotel. If you want to go by car, take the road beside Visva Bharati and follow it until you see the sign of the Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary. It was 2 minutes from the main road. There is no designated car parking but you can park at roadside. The sanctuary is quite large and we just covered a fraction of it. Intensely beautiful, secluded, and serene. Lots of deer roaming around. There was a nice lake flanked with fallen trees or curved tree branches. If you are out there in a winter afternoon with your friends and families, there are loads of places you can sit and have a great "adda" session. Only request, do not litter the place with plastics and leftovers.

Chhatimtala Santiniketan On his way to Raipur, Maharshi Devendranath found two chhatim trees in a vast open arid land near Raipur. He decided to stay here for sometime and started praying. The place attracted his attention and he decided to establish an Ashram here. Maharshi took lease for 20 bigha land from Bhuvanmohan Singha of Raipur on 1st March, 1863 for Rs.5.00 annual tax. As per Rabindra biographer Prabhat Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Devendranath came to Raipur after 1960. Maharshi called this place as The Abode of Peace! Chhaimtala became a place of importance after Maharshi established Santiniketan Ashram in 1963. As per Aghorenath Chattopadhyay, who was employed in the Ashram as Adhramdhari informed that this particular place was a place for Tantrik Sadhana by the dacoits and the followers of Bamakhyapa! When you visit Santiniketan, you may find this place easily opposite of Rabindra Museum. ****

I was quite fortunate enough to witness the beauty of Chhatimtala, the meditation seat of Sri Debendranath Tagore, the father of the famous Bengali poet and Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. The Chhatimtala is simply a beautiful garden with the meditation seat in the midst of several Chhatim trees. Entry to the main garden is restricted, but it's beauty can be appreciated from outside. The information panel outside provides the history of the site in details. There are arrangements for Heritage Walks on Sunday mornings, where one can know about the history of the site as well as of Shantiniketan in details. Overall, the site reminded me of the adage that an educational institution is a Temple of learning, where there is scope for learning as well as creativity. You can also explore the site on your own without any guide and appreciate the beauty of Viswa Bharati/Shantiniketan, an UNESCO World Heritage site. The best time to visit would be the months of November and December.

Chhatimtala is a truly peaceful and sacred place the heart of Santiniketan. Standing here, you can feel the deep spiritual energy and the presence of Rabindranath Tagore’s vision of education and simplicity. The calm surroundings, the rustling trees, and the gentle breeze make it a perfect spot for reflection and inner peace. It’s the source and soul of Santiniketan. I feel really blessed that my home is very close to this beautiful and inspiring place.

Its a heritage place indeed. But now there is no scope to enter into the Biswabharati campus.

First time being here, good experience. You can get here Literally everything, clothes, bags, sarees, handcrafted huge collection, foods, rides etc. It was great to experience such huge fair. Huge crowd controlled by multiple police team, also monitored by drone. A fair that celebrates art and culture.

I visited Santiniketan Pous Mela for the first time and it was an wonderful experience. Pous Mela is a heritage fair. The fair was over crowded however the administration managed really well. The fair ground is very big and there were a lot of shops. Overall I enjoyed my time there.

Every year I go to this fair with my family and friends.. this fair is a blessing for everyone... From shantiniketan's classic heritage products to affordable bags and jewellery they have everything.. the rides, the shops, the food, everything the vibes is just WOW !!! blessed to be a part of this city 💝💝

This year Poush Mela organised from 23rd to 28th December,2024. The venue was Purbapallir Math. The usual place for the mela since long. I had been there for two days. The place was crowded indeed but there was no chaos. I think half of the stalls were selling food stuff, snacks and beverages. A stall from Kala Bhavan and Shiksha Charcha was also there. Budding artists were there with their artefacts. Madhubani painters from Bihar also participated. Amusement establishments were also there.

The ground we have witness during our University time it was all open, now it looses the basic fundamentals of Guru RabindraNath Tagore' Ideology of Education. He always prefers to be grounded with the environment, he always through his writing mentioned how it is important to be connected with the nature and acknowledge there is the unity of all the creatures of the universe. By covering with nets and all makes the very environment suffocated. The harmony is now missing, it is now converted into a zoo instead of a campus. Being an alumni seeing these development really feels heartbreaking.

The Shantiniketan Poush Mela ground is a sprawling space bustling with numerous stalls offering food, shopping, rides, and cultural experiences. While it’s vibrant and lively, the sheer crowd can be overwhelming, especially for families with kids, so extra care is needed. With multiple entry points, it’s easy to lose your way while exploring. Another challenge is the absence of nearby toto services due to no-entry restrictions, requiring visitors to walk considerable distances to reach their cars or parking zones. Despite these challenges, the Mela's charm and cultural richness make it worth the visit.

Sonajhuri Haat is truly a vibrant and beautiful place to visit. The atmosphere is lively with traditional music, handmade crafts, and friendly artisans. One great thing is that the haat remains open every day except Wednesday, so planning a visit is easy. I was especially impressed with the collection of sarees—beautifully handcrafted and very reasonably priced compared to many other tourist markets. You get genuine, local products at fair rates. The entire experience felt authentic and peaceful, surrounded by nature and Baul music. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Shantiniketan!

Walking into Sonajhuri Haat feels less like entering a market and more like stepping into a timeless film scene — where every tree whispers Tagore’s verses, and every path glows with the golden dust of Santiniketan’s heritage. The haat isn’t just a marketplace; it’s a living museum. Handmade crafts, tribal jewelry, dokra art, and earthy terracotta idols line the stalls like characters waiting to be discovered. The air itself hums with Baul music, their ektara notes rising and falling like echoes from a forgotten century. Cinematically, Sonajhuri is pure magic. This place blew my mind. Needs more PR and maybe better management. For someone who doesn't understand art, it's good when every exhibit is subject to interpretation. Credit to Subrata Basu for curating such an extensive collection. Ticket prices are ₹40/person and there's a separate ₹20 photography charge. Added note: Visit when high or after smoking up. Sure to be a revelation.

It’s perfect for a slow stroll or just soaking in the Santiniketan vibe. But… just a heads-up — I spotted a snake during my visit! 😳 So if you’re scared of reptiles, maybe stay alert while walking around the greener patches. Still, overall it’s a lovely spot if you enjoy art, nature, and calm. Just wear comfy shoes and keep your eyes open!

The overall look is really nice. Everything is very nicely decorated and arranged. The artists have really done an awesome job. But the lack of maintenance is clearly visible. Even if 'Do not touch' is not written on the items, we would not have touched anything because of the dirt.

Overall good. 2nd visit. Mostly lonely due to the day after Kali Puja that too in the afternoon. Did some flea marketing from the available shops. Minor bargaining is recommended. But as visitors it is recommended to buy items frim the locals who are selling it at very competitive prices thereby assisting in their economic growth. Parking is very limited. Best wishes.

I recently visited Srijani Shilpogram. The idea behind it is interesting, showcasing crafts and culture from different regions, but the execution could be better. Some areas feel a bit neglected, and the variety of exhibits is limited. It’s okay for a short visit if you’re nearby, but I wouldn’t make a special trip just for this. With some improvements, it could become a more worthwhile attraction.

This is the museum section in the visva bharati campus. Entry fees is Rs 50 for indian nationals. The main block of d museum has 2 division. The ground floor is called geetanjanli, containing all work pertaining to his work related to nobel prize. 1st floor contains his relics. Besides the museum there are 5 houses where the poet stayed , udichi being the last one. There is even the car which the poet used. One usually spends 1n half hrs here in the museum. There was only one building there namely 'Santiniketan' (which is still there adjacent the upasana mandir known as 'Odisha Bhawan'). Maharshi liked the place and registered it in the name of Maharshi Devendranath against Rupee One as a token value. He called his home Santiniketan (after the name of the house). Santiniketan became a spiritual centre where people from all religions were invited to join for meditation and prayers. Old palace of a local Jamindar of Surul area in Birbhum district. Currently the place is widely congested and through narrow lanes. Only courtyard is accessible where view limits by the Natmandir. Clear disparity of Architectural design between Natmandir and other parts. The present Surul village is a non-descriptive village. There is not much choice of communication from Shantiniketan, except pre hired auto rickshaw or car. The Surul Rajbari is famous for its Durga Puja Celebration started 250 years ago which continues till the present date. Though the past generation pomp and show are not present to that extent, yet during the four days of Puja the Rajbari is decorated with fancy Jhar Lights. Local artiste performs theatres and the immersion of the idol is done with a gala procession.

Surul was once extremely prosperous in trade, commerce, and industry. The contribution of the Sarkar zamindar family to the development and expansion of Surul village is undeniable. Although the original surname of this zamindar family is Ghosh, they received the title 'Sarkar' from the British. The Surul zamindar house is still famous for its traditional Durga Puja celebrations. Next to this vast mansion is a Panchratna temple and a pair of Shiva temples established by the family.

Somehow good if you'd prefer a long walk. You'll find a herd of Indian Spotted Deer near the feeding shed. The place is good enough for a leisurely stroll but the prices per head has increased tenfolds. It's no longer INR 10 but 100 from 2023. You'll find a porcupine shed at the entrance. He's a loner. Don't scare him off by making noises. Many people were doing that. You'll find quite a few spots with very promising photographic prospects. Enjoy!

The park is well maintained but it is not worth visiting. It had the entry tickets for ₹100 but recently the entry fees have been suspended. One has to bring any government ID proof to enter the park without the fees. Most of the area is closed and we cannot visit those areas. There are watch towers, but the main tower is closed. If you are a wildlife lover or bird watcher, the place is not recommended. It was a better place earlier but gradually it has become just a park. Children may find this place good. If you are visiting Santiniketan, visit other places without wasting time here.

You would definitely see Deer here but they don't access much deeper to the sanctuary. Even before covid which was not restricted for tourists, is now restricted. So, max 20 min would taken for the unrestricted area to visit.

Waste of time. You can go and watch some deer with lots of tree.Entry is free. Don't forget to keep id proof . Without showing id proof no can enter in the sanctuary

Probably one of the best deer parks in India. This is well maintained. The entry fee is a bit high...100 rupees per person. But it's worth it. I am also sharing the photos...you can understand how closely we can see the deer herd. They will fight and do all sorts of stuff. Many will even pose for you. If you're in shantiniketan, definitely go here.

I found the experience to be quite wonderful. Many many deer call this sanctuary home and they all come out during meal times. If you walk further, there are beautiful fields and trees near the water body filled with all sorts of birds and fauna. Best time to go is in the morning around 10:30am!

As named Deer park it only has few spotted deers and no other animals. The entry is free to all Indians with valid id proof. It is a brisk 10 min walk in and out.

It is truely said the IIT of Visva Bharati. It provides all round nourishment to a student. Study goes with fun and frolic in a green environment.

Its the the Udichi its in bolpur Shantinekatan. Its Under Biswa Bharati university and its beautiful place its the place where Rabindranath Tagore use to stay.

Udichi, whose name is inspired by the classical Indian musical mode associated with the northern direction, holds a special place among the five significant heritage houses within the Uttarayan Complex. It stands proudly alongside its companions: Udayan, Shyamali, Konark, and Punascha. Constructed around 1938, Udichi gained prominence as it was the very last house where Rabindranath Tagore resided in Santiniketan, making it a pivotal Tagore house for understanding his final years. The architectural genius behind Udichi was none other than Tagore’s own son, Rathindranath Tagore, who designed it under his father’s direct guidance and with modifications tailored specifically to the poet’s personal preferences. This collaboration resulted in a structure that was both functional and deeply personal. At Tagore’s specific request, a distinctive room elevated on four robust pillars was incorporated into the building, giving it a prominent and singular appearance. This innovative feature sets Udichi apart within the Uttarayan Complex. The ground floor of this remarkable heritage house served a profound educational purpose. Here, Tagore would frequently conduct poetry classes, driven by his unwavering belief in the power of a serene and open environment to deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of poetry. The upper floor, providing a tranquil retreat, served as his private living quarters. The place is not open to visitors

"Udichi" is one of the houses Tagore had in Shantiniketan. Previously visitors were allowed inside but now due to some restrictions you are only allowed to see it from outside.

Udichi is the last house built for Rabindranath Tagore. He felt claustrophobic, he said, and wanted a room to be constructed on four pillars. Again, the 'Udichi' house was built in the style of an open house. At first, however, its name was 'Senjuti'. Later the name was changed. There was a rose garden in front of this house.

Bichitra Shopping Centre, Bolpur Located very near to Jambuni busstand and within Geetanjali Cultural Centre. The shop was inaugurated by the then Honorable MP Shri Somnath Chatterjee on 19th August, 2001. This Shop was developed by DCL of Kolkata and still they are the owner. There is one photograph of Shri Sadhan Dutta, the founder of DCL group is also displayed. This Shop mainly displays and sells handicrafts created by local artisans and textile also. Nice ambience. The items are displayed elegantly. There is one Palash tree near the entrance, which makes the area beautiful during March. One can visit this Shop during Santiniketan tour. In the adjacent area there is one restaurant also. ****

Good collection of sarees and designer blouses. Specially khesh handloom kantha stitched sarees and designer blouses. Scarf dupatta for girls are also available. Guys can have their kurta. Jewellery collection are bit expensive. They have trial room also so you can try apparel for your perfect size. Must visit place to have Shantiniketan stuffs from here. A restaurant named Ghore Baire is attached where you can enjoy Bengali cuisines.

A good place for purchasing sarees, pottery, paintings, hand made soaps, paintings and more. Situated adjacent to the Ghare Baire resturant. Some items are a bit costly but quality is good.

Amar Kutir is a historic cooperative society located near Shantiniketan in West Bengal, India. Established in 1927 by freedom fighter Sushen Mukherjee, it initially served as a refuge for activists during India's independence movement. Post-independence, it transformed into a hub for promoting traditional Bengali arts and crafts, aligning with Rabindranath Tagore's vision of rural reconstruction. Situated along the banks of the Kopai River, Amar Kutir is renowned for its handcrafted products, including leather goods, kantha-stitched saris, bamboo crafts, batik, shola, and lac items. The cooperative emphasizes empowering local artisans, particularly women, through skill development and sustainable livelihoods. In 1992, a craft development center was established under a Central government initiative, followed by a hand-block printing training center in 1993, further nurturing the legacy of craftsmanship in the region.

Nice place to visit with family. Collection is very good. Quality of products seems very good also. Price is on the higher side though. Overall good experience.

Great collection of items to purchase, we found it difficult to hold ourselves back. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality and the purpose of this place, not sure why people complain. Highly recommended, will be going back tomorrow for a second round of haul.
