Lookouts
Tiger Hill, situated 2590 meters above sea level and 13 kilometers from Darjeeling, is renowned for its breathtaking sunrise views. It offers a spectacular sight of the sun illuminating the peaks of Kanchenjunga before it appears at lower altitudes. This hill is also the summit of Ghoom, the highest railway station on the Darjeeling Himalayan Train route, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Dear folks I'm reviewing Most beautiful place in Darjeeling. The Tiger Hill. Tiger Hill Sunrise Point is truly a must-visit when in Darjeeling! Located about a 30–40 minute drive from the main city, it’s famous for offering a breathtaking view of the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range. Ideally, you should plan your visit between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. to catch the magical first rays lighting up the snow-clad peaks. However, do keep in mind that the weather in Darjeeling can be very unpredictable. If clouds are too dense, the majestic Himalayan view might hide itself away! The spot is peaceful and fills you with a deep sense of calm and wonder. With the cool winds blowing. whether you make it for sunrise or visit later in the day, Tiger Hill is absolutely worth every moment — a truly unforgettable experience. Must recommended place in Darjeeling
Dhaara S — Google review
Check for the clouds at around 3am before heading here to get an idea whether you can see the mountains especially the Kanchanjunga. The vehicle management needs to improve. The entire tourist population of Darjeeling will be here with atleast 300 cars on a weekday and more on the weekends. So be ready to walk a bit because your driver will prefer keeping the car at the far end to ease the departure. No official observatory here when I went in the month of October 2025. You'll have some local vendors who serve maggie and momo as well. So enjoy this place and be hopeful that the weather gods bless you

Bike is allowed after 9 am. Road is fine. Sunset is more beautiful than sunrise.
Kingshuk P — Google review
Visited Tiger Hill and had a wonderful experience. The sunrise over the mountains was stunning, and watching the golden light hit the peaks felt magical. We also had pahad wali Maggie, which tasted amazing in the cold mountain weather. Overall, a beautiful and refreshing visit!
Shoumini D — Google review
Sunrise view from the tiger hill is a mesmerizing experience. And also the view of Kanchenjunga from here is wonderful. Must visit place if you visit Darjeeling.

Iconic Place in Darjeeling for Sunrise View !! Kanchanjunga in the golden rays of Sun was just pleasure to eyes 👀! Perfect place for photoshoot and If the sky is clear the you can get a view of the Mt. Everest too!
Sachin M — Google review
It's an amazing view point ,one should definitely visit in a life time. Mesmerizing sunrise and kanchenjunga mountain range will make your visit worth the time and effort you put to reach there.
Irfan K — Google review
At Tiger Hill before the dawn, The world is quiet, still, and calm. Then slowly, light begins to rise— A golden whisper in the skies. Kangchenjunga wakes in glow, Blushing pink with morning’s show. The Sleeping Buddha shines in gold, A sight that never can grow old. Clouds drift soft, the air is chill, Magic lingers on the hill. In that moment, pure and true— The mountains feel like they’re blessing you. A sunrise framed in heaven’s hue—

Batasia Loop is a fascinating stop along the Siliguri-Darjeeling route, situated below Ghoom Railway Station. This engineering marvel from the British era was designed to ease the steep descent for trains passing through Ghoom station on their journey to Darjeeling. Observing the miniature train navigate around this circular track is a delightful experience for visitors.
Before few day’s ago me with my loving family visited the iconic Batasia Loop in Darjeeling, a scenic wonder along the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, where the toy train winds through lush greenery and panoramic Mountain View’s. You can wear beautiful costumes for rent rs 50. You can easily spend 30 minutes to 1 hour here. . The toy train halts here briefly, allowing passengers to experience the mesmerizing landscape and capture stunning photographs. This was such a beautiful experience.
Neegar A — Google review
Batasia Loop in Darjeeling is a fascinating blend of engineering marvel, natural beauty, and cultural charm. Located about 5 km from the town, this iconic railway loop is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, built to negotiate steep gradients in the hilly terrain. Watching the famous toy train wind its way through the perfectly curved track, with the majestic Kanchenjunga range as the backdrop, is a sight that delights both railway enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The loop is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens filled with vibrant flowers, manicured lawns, and walking paths, making it a peaceful spot to stroll and enjoy the crisp mountain air. At the center stands a war memorial dedicated to the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives in various wars post-independence. The monument, with its solemn atmosphere, adds historical significance to the scenic location. On clear days, Batasia Loop offers sweeping panoramic views of Darjeeling town and the snow-clad peaks beyond. Local vendors selling tea, snacks, and souvenirs add a friendly, lively touch to the visit. The early morning is the best time to experience the place, especially when the toy train passes through. Batasia Loop is more than just a stopover—it’s a picturesque and meaningful part of Darjeeling’s heritage that captures the region’s spirit perfectly.
SK R — Google review
My visit to Batasia Loop was one of the most scenic and memorable parts of my Darjeeling trip. I took the Toy Train joy ride, and the 15-minute halt at Batasia Loop made the experience even more special. As soon as I stepped out, I was welcomed by a stunning 360° view of the valley, the beautifully designed garden, and on a clear day, the majestic Kanchenjunga. I even took the view through the binoculars available there, and the sight was absolutely breathtaking — it felt like the mountains were right in front of me. The loop itself is fascinating to witness, with the toy train track curving gracefully around the garden, creating a picture-perfect moment. The garden is vibrant and well-maintained, with flower beds, clean pathways and several lovely spots to pause, click photos or simply soak in the surroundings. The War Memorial in the centre adds a heartfelt touch, honouring the brave Gorkha soldiers and bringing a sense of respect and reflection. For me, Batasia Loop is the perfect blend of nature, nostalgia and emotion. That short 15-minute stop during the toy train ride was enough to leave a lasting impression. It’s a must-visit to truly experience the charm of Darjeeling — peaceful, picturesque and truly unforgettable.
Surojit S — Google review
We visited Batasia Loop in the morning, and it was an unforgettable experience. The entry ticket is ₹50 per person, which is absolutely worth it. The sky was crystal clear that day, allowing us to enjoy a stunning view of the majestic Kanchenjunga right from the spot. The beautifully landscaped gardens, the iconic spiral railway track, and the peaceful atmosphere made the visit even more special. A must-visit place in Darjeeling, especially in the morning when the views are at their best.
Sohail S — Google review
Standing at the heart of the Batasia Loop offers a truly mesmerizing perspective. It's a breathtaking confluence of human ingenuity—witnessing the toy train loop around itself—set against the spectacular backdrop of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga. A moment of pure, tranquil beauty that every Darjeeling visitor must experience!!
Mostafijur R — Google review
Batasia Loop is an average spot that doesn’t quite live up to the hype. The views are decent, but not particularly unique compared to other scenic locations nearby. The biggest downside is that it’s overly crowded, especially during peak hours, which takes away from the experience. There isn’t much to do apart from a quick stop for photos, and facilities around the area are minimal. Overall, it’s okay for a short visit, but not worth going out of your way for.
Dr R — Google review
A Must-Visit Icon of Darjeeling! Batasia Loop is one of the most iconic and scenic spots in Darjeeling. Watching the toy train take a wide, graceful loop around the beautifully landscaped garden is a treat — especially with the mighty Kanchenjunga towering in the background on a clear day. It’s not just a railway marvel but also a peaceful place to spend some time. The area is well maintained with a lovely garden, a war memorial honoring Gorkha soldiers, and small shops offering local snacks, tea, and souvenirs. It’s a photographer’s paradise — the panoramic views of the mountains and the town are breathtaking.

Zoo

Nestled amidst picturesque tea plantations and overlooked by the majestic Kanchenjunga, the charming town of Darjeeling offers a plethora of captivating attractions. Visitors can savor the colonial ambiance while enjoying a pink gin and tonic, explore tea factories, discover museums and zoos, witness the breathtaking Himalayan sunrise, or meander through botanical gardens. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a must-visit attraction in Darjeeling.
Darjeeling Zoo, officially known as Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, is one of the most unique zoos I’ve ever visited. Nestled on the hilly slopes of Darjeeling, it’s not just a zoo—it feels like a walk through a peaceful, forested sanctuary with crisp mountain air all around. What makes this zoo special is its focus on high-altitude Himalayan animals. You’ll find red pandas, snow leopards, Himalayan wolves, and even a majestic black panther if you’re lucky. The enclosures are pretty spacious, and most of them blend naturally with the surroundings, which makes it feel less like a typical zoo and more like an animal reserve. One of the highlights for me was seeing the red pandas up close—they’re adorable and quite active! The snow leopards, though lazy, were a treat to spot. There’s also a mountaineering institute within the premises that’s worth a quick stop if you’re into adventure history. Walking around the zoo can be a bit tiring since it's on a slope, so comfortable shoes are a must. It’s clean, well-maintained, and offers great photo opportunities, especially on clear days with views of the surrounding hills. Entry fees are very reasonable, and it's a great place for both kids and adults to learn about Himalayan wildlife. I would definitely recommend adding it to your Darjeeling itinerary if you love animals or simply want a peaceful escape for an hour or two.
Ragini B — Google review
One of the best high-altitude zoos in India! Located in the scenic hills of Darjeeling, this zoo is home to rare and endangered Himalayan animals including the red panda, Asiatic black bear, Royal Bengal tiger, white tiger, leopard, and even the elusive snow leopard. The zoo is well-maintained and focused on conservation and breeding programs, especially for red pandas and Himalayan wolves. The enclosures are natural-looking and spacious, though be prepared for a bit of walking uphill due to the hilly terrain. ✅ Must-see: Red panda enclosure, snow leopards, and pheasants. 🌲 Surrounded by serene nature and cool weather – makes the walk enjoyable. 🎟️ Tickets are affordable and you can also visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute inside the same complex.
Debasmita M — Google review
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, better known as the Darjeeling Zoo, is one of the most unique zoos in India and a must-visit while in town. Established in 1958, it is the highest-altitude zoo in the country, located at around 7,000 feet above sea level. Unlike many other zoos, this one specializes in conserving and breeding endangered Himalayan species, which makes it very special. The zoo is home to rare animals such as the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Wolf, and Clouded Leopard. Seeing these magnificent creatures in a habitat designed close to their natural environment is truly memorable. The enclosures are well-planned and spread out, and the hilly terrain of the zoo itself makes walking through it an experience in nature. The greenery, fresh air, and peaceful surroundings make it very different from crowded city zoos. Another highlight is the adjacent Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), which you can explore along with the zoo. It adds to the overall experience, especially for those interested in trekking and mountaineering history. On the downside, the zoo involves a lot of walking and climbing, which might be tiring for elderly visitors. Also, some enclosures could use better signage and maintenance. Overall, Darjeeling Zoo is an excellent place for families, nature lovers, and anyone curious about Himalayan wildlife. A well-deserved 4-star destination that blends education, conservation, and natural beauty.
Soumitra M — Google review
A truly unique place!!!!!! We enjoyed a lot here ---we the three friends. Positives 1. Snow Leopard is the main attraction here. 2. Tigers are few in numbers and visible prominently. 3. You can see bear and crocodile from very near. 4. Varieties of deer are available here. 5. Parrot house is another attraction here. 6. Bengal Natural History Museum ####Dont miss it. It is a jem. It is inside the zoo area. But very few people enter her. Negatives 1. Need more species of animals and birds as they are very few in quantity and numbers.
Shovan D — Google review
Excellent high-altitude zoo! The conservation work here is commendable. Saw the beautiful Red Panda and the elusive Snow Leopard. Well-maintained and a lovely atmosphere. The ticket price is very reasonable for a combined visit with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. A definite highlight of my Darjeeling trip."
SHOUVIK C — Google review
Visited the place during diwali with my family. Very clean and nicely maintained. I will suggestvto book tickets in online so thst there is no wait at the gate. Just show the QR at the entry and you can go in. There is car parking space for private cars and if you are coming by publoc taxi then have to walk around 300 metres. So if ypu have aged people or kids better yake private taxi and drop at the gate. There are snow leopards, birds etx but no tiger when we visited. One thing please bring your own water bottle. There are ample refillers available but no shop to purchase water.

Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park is situated in Darjeeling. This Zoo is famous for sambar, deer, and Siberian Tiger and the famous Red Panda. You can enjoy the area. There is most important thing that is Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Museum. There museum is really fantastic. Those who have interest in the Himalaya, should love this museum.

This zoo is good, ticket for Indians in 2025 is 110rs. You can book it online also. As darjeeling is known has queen of hills, so whole zoo is like up and down. Be ready for small treaking. It's not only a zoo, you will see greenery, aquarium and HIM museum.

You will enjoy going here because they will teach you in a very good way how you should do mountaineering. How to climb mountains. Which instruments does he use? Which stall does he use? How should I walk? Who was the first to climb a mountain? Who was the first to climb Mount Everest? You will get to know everything here.

As I stood at the institution in Darjeeling, the Himalayas unfolded before me like a canvas of breathtaking beauty. The snow-capped peaks, majestic and towering, seemed to defy gravity, their rugged grandeur softened by the gentle caress of mist. The mountains' serene silence was punctuated only by the sweet songs of birds and the rustle of leaves, creating a symphony that resonated deep within my soul. The Himalayas are a masterpiece of nature, crafted over millions of years by the patient hands of wind, water, and ice. As I gazed upon their majestic form, I felt the weight of their ancient history, the stories of civilizations past etched into every rock and valley. The institution, nestled in the heart of this natural wonder, seemed a haven for those seeking knowledge and adventure. The Himalayas near Darjeeling are a haven for the senses. The scent of rhododendrons and pine wafted through the air, mingling with the earthy aroma of the forest floor. The taste of local tea, rich and full-bodied, was a perfect complement to the stunning views. As I sipped my tea, I felt the stress of the world melt away, replaced by a sense of tranquility and awe. The institution's surroundings offer a wealth of opportunities for exploration and discovery. From trekking and mountaineering to birdwatching and photography, there's something for every kind of adventurer. As I watched the sun set over the Himalayas, painting the sky with hues of gold and crimson, I felt grateful to be in this enchanting location. In the evening, as the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, the Himalayas took on a mystical quality. The mountains seemed to whisper secrets to the wind, their ancient wisdom carried on the breeze. As I stood there, enveloped by the majesty of the Himalayas, I felt a deep sense of connection to the natural world. The Himalayas near Darjeeling are a treasure trove of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure opportunities. Whether you're a nature lover, a photographer, or simply someone seeking inspiration, the Himalayas are sure to leave you spellbound. As I left the institution, I carried with me memories of the majestic Himalayas, their grandeur and beauty forever etched in my mind.

Invaluable tourist spot in Darjeeling. Great place to view the glorious attempts to climb the tallest mountain peaks in India and Nepal. We also get the opportunity to see the various gear used by the countless mountaineers in their attempts to climb them. There are also the statues of Tenzing Sherpa and Edmund Hillary. We pause there in awe as we recollect their heroic feat. The entire process of mountaineering is described in detail there. There are several magnificent photographs too.
Dr G — Google review
An absolute gem for anyone interested in mountaineering, adventure, or Himalayan history. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is not only well-maintained but also deeply inspiring. The museum section is filled with fascinating exhibits, including gear used by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary. The location is scenic, nestled near the Darjeeling Zoo, with a backdrop of the Himalayas. Great for families, students, or solo travelers. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and the entire experience is both educational and enriching. Don’t miss the mountaineering wall, training areas, and the tribute to Tenzing Norgay — it truly reflects the spirit of adventure that Darjeeling is known for. Highly recommended!

A Serene Walk and a Lovely Experience at Happy Valley Tea Estate We walked down to Happy Valley Tea Estate from the Botanical Garden, and as we emerged from the alley into the open, we were greeted by breathtaking views of tea plants carpeting the slopes. The trail, lined with graceful Deodhar trees on one side, made the walk even more delightful. After a leisurely kilometre-long walk, we reached the estate around 12:30 pm. July being off-season, there were hardly any tourists, and the factory was relatively quiet as most activity happens in the morning hours. Nevertheless, the staff kindly conducted a tour of the factory, explaining the tea-making process in detail, followed by a tea tasting session. The tour costs ₹100 per person. Happy Valley Tea Estate is definitely worth a visit when in Darjeeling - for its peaceful atmosphere, stunning surroundings and a chance to relish the essence of Darjeeling tea.

I didn’t visit the tea factory itself, but I did enjoy the beautiful views of the town and the stunning hills of West Bengal as I walked down the road. Just a friendly reminder! what goes down must come back up! 😂 I ended up walking all the way down toward the Darjeeling side and came back up through the village, which took me about 30 to 40 minutes.

Truly Peaceful: Kanchenjunga Views & Japanese Culture The Darjeeling Peace Pagoda is a must-visit for total peace and incredible mountain views. The natural setting is beautiful, filled with lush trees and the sound of birds chirping, making it instantly calming. On a clear day, the view is spectacular—you get a clear, majestic shot of the Himalayas, especially the iconic Kanchenjunga. The Pagoda itself is an important symbol of Buddhism and global harmony. It was built by the revered founder, Nichidatsu Fujii Guruji, and its simple, elegant design beautifully showcases Japanese culture and architecture. It's a wonderful, pristine spot for quiet reflection. Highly, highly recommended!

A calm and spiritually refreshing place with stunning views of the Darjeeling hills. The Japanese Temple exudes serenity, and the rhythmic chanting of the monks creates a deeply peaceful atmosphere. The adjoining Peace Pagoda, with its gleaming white structure and golden Buddha panels, is beautifully maintained and photogenic. A short walk connects both sites, making it a fulfilling visit. However, parking can be quite congested, especially during peak hours, so it’s better to come early or hire a local cab. A must-visit spot to experience peace, architecture, and panoramic views of Darjeeling in one frame.

The monastery houses a valuable collection of manuscripts, including the revered 108-volume Kangyur.
On 22nd February 2024, we visited this place. Upon arrival, we were asked to take off our shoes before entering, which added to the calm and respectful atmosphere. As we stepped inside, we were amazed by the soothing music playing in the background. It immediately created a peaceful vibe, and we naturally slipped into a short meditation. It was incredibly relaxing and a beautiful way to start our visit.

There is parking next to the road, while you need to take the steps to reach the location. The inside of the monastery is beautiful and calm. Photography is permitted inside. There weren’t many people around, so we could walk inside comfortably and spend quiet time without any rush. The monastery has a beautiful statue of Maitreya Buddha and colourful prayer flags that add to the spiritual atmosphere. It’s a bit far from the Darjeeling city centre, but the drive itself is scenic and worth it. The whole place feels calm, clean, and perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful break from the busy town. One of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling, this place holds great spiritual and historical value. The highlight is the impressive 4.57-meter statue of Maitreya Buddha, painted in gold and adorned with precious stones—it truly leaves you in awe. The monastery also houses a remarkable collection of ancient Buddhist texts. The peaceful monastery campus features a small café where you can enjoy tea or coffee. I tried the tea, and it was absolutely superb. A serene and enriching place to visit.

A serene and spiritually uplifting place, Ghoom Monastery is one of Darjeeling’s oldest and most peaceful spots. The atmosphere inside the prayer hall feels calm and timeless, with the grand statue of Maitreya Buddha radiating warmth and devotion. The surrounding hills add to the monastery’s quiet charm. There’s also a small gift shop near the entrance selling prayer flags, souvenirs, and locally made items at fair prices. It’s a lovely place to spend some reflective moments and experience the Buddhist heritage of the region. Best visited in the morning before the tourist rush.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ghoom Monastery, Darjeeling A peaceful and beautiful place to visit! 🛕 When I went, it wasn’t crowded at all, which made the experience calm and special 😌. Inside the Buddhist monastery, one of the bhikṣus (monks) kindly called me over and offered me something to eat and drink 🥣🍵—such a heartwarming gesture. They even allowed me to take a photo with them 📸, which made the visit extra memorable. While exploring, I actually saw how they make bags and decorative hanging items 👜🎐. The elderly women working there were so warm and kind—it truly touched my heart ❤️. There’s also a small museum to explore 🖼️📚, which adds more depth to the visit. The locals were friendly and full of stories 😊, and by chatting with them I learned some interesting things about the culture and history 🗣️📖. Oh, and the cute little dogs around the monastery 🐶 were just adorable and super friendly too! A must-visit if you’re in Darjeeling! 🌄🙏✨

Shrubbery Nightingale Park, located in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is a serene public park with landscaped gardens and benches. It features a large statue of Lord Shiva and was once the private courtyard of Sir Thomas Tartan's Bungalow during the British Raj. Despite being destroyed in an earthquake in 1934, it remains a popular spot for visitors and locals to enjoy stunning views of the Kanchenjunga peaks.
Very beautiful. 9am to 5 pm. Ticket entry 25₹ . However be careful with the 5rs. Scam that happens at ticket counter. He hides 5 rs. And says he doesn't have change and demands you to pay 30₹. The garden is very nice and must spend time with good benches also put. You can easily spend couple of hours here, just relaxing. There are some walki g trails that goes downwards also. Near the washroom area
Purva K — Google review
Shrubbery Nightingale Park is a peaceful, green retreat in Darjeeling with lovely lawns, colorful flowers, and a striking Shiva statue by a small lake. It’s just a short walk from the Mall, costs INR 25 to enter, and is open 8 AM-8 PM. Great for a quick, relaxing stroll or picnic. Sadly, when we visited, clouds blocked the Kanchenjunga views, which was a letdown. The toilets were also unclean, which made the experience less pleasant. Still, it’s a nice spot for some calm if the weather cooperates!

One of the best parks I have been to and that too with a view that kills! You will be able to find a wide range of flowers, most of which you'll probably see for the first time. They do have a temple at the top and a fountain which was not working when I visited. Plenty of greenery to sit, soak up the nature and recharge. Do definitely visit this place to at least just chill around. They do have an entry fee of 25 per person I think

I visited on a cloudy day, but on a clear day you may get to see the surrounding valley. Cafe and washrooms are available. Don’t skip this park.

A peaceful and colorful escape in Darjeeling! 🌸🌿 Shrubbery Nightingale Park is full of vibrant flowers and calm open spaces. I’ve shared a few images here, but for the full video and many more moments, check out my YouTube and Instagram: @iamaloknath. 🎟️ Entry Fee: ₹25 – totally worth it! 🍽️ There’s a canteen inside the park. I had their paratha with chutney — and it was genuinely superb. Would recommend giving it a try. 🌄 There’s also a viewpoint near the canteen from where you can see Kangchenjunga if the sky is clear. Unfortunately, it was cloudy during my visit. 🪑 Lots of benches, lawn space, and peaceful corners to relax. A great spot for families and kids too. 🌺 If you enjoy flowers and plants, you’ll love the variety here. 📍It’s also very close to Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. Overall, a must-visit place in Darjeeling. ✅ Feedback to Management: The park is beautiful — maintaining plant labels or adding flower name boards would really help visitors learn more. The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre, established in 1959, is located on a hillside in Darjeeling and serves as a home to Tibetan refugees, the sick, elderly, and destitute. The center is home to 130 Tibetan families who produce traditional handicrafts such as carpets, wood carvings, woolen coats, Buddha idols, sculptures, musical instruments, masks, and thangka paintings.
The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre is an incredible place that offers a profound glimpse into the resilience, culture, and craftsmanship of the Tibetan people. The center, nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling, is both educational and deeply moving. What stood out to me the most was the dedication of the staff and the artisans, who work with such passion and skill to keep their traditions alive. Walk upstairs to see weavers at work making carpets and clothing. The room with the dyed wools was amazing. We enjoyed our chat with the volunteer in the wool room. There is also a small shop selling handicrafts and a small convenience store.

This is an old post but a 2025 post indeed. Visited the place with family with great excitement but couldn't find much of stuff. Things were very common which can easily be found in Delhi markets. But reaching the place was really exciting as the route was steep and the driver had some skills. Loved the surroundings of the place and the cute houses therein, people and their pets both were sooooo cute and welcoming. Great view around for photography.

Such a wonderful place to visit. People there are very welcoming, I got bonded to their smiling faces. Some elders also offered life advice and shared their story as well. I felt completely relaxed talking to them. Inspite of their age, they work very hard and make handmade products. They sort, dye the wool and make beautiful rugs and other stuff. Kindly support them if you visit.

It was indeed an amazing experience to be there. The photo gallery, their own loom, handicrafts have stored their remnants from a faded Tibetan past. This place is a must visit if you are around Darjeeling.

Hello All Travel Lover, This place is very unique itself; it will show you Tibetan history, culture and their struggles of the community in general as they were chased out of their own land by the Chinese. A good place to buy souvenirs and also a place which houses some invaluable relics, such as the printing press used to publish Tibetan newspapers and pamphlets. you can see here many photographs and so many memories. sad part is not maintain properly. Just visit this place if you are in Darjeeling. Thanks for your support & Love :)

Tibetan refugee self help centre houses nearly 200 Tibetan refugees that came to India in 1959 along with Dalai Lama. Most are elderly born in Tibet while some are born and brought up in India. History of Tibet through Chinese invasion is displayed through photographs. Old archives, maps, artifacts and photographs are on disply. There self help centre makes many handicrafts and one should buy them as a gesture. Though the problem of Tibet remains unsolved the people here are optimistic.

Dali monastry- important center for Buddhist teachings and meditation, attracting monks and devotees from all over the world established in the year 1971.. One of the best things that happened to me during my visit to darjeeling was at Dali monastry. It was a rainy day in the month of august 2025, we hired a vehicle for sight seeing and returning back from Lamhatta.. as per our driver it was like any other monastry so not to waste our time by visiting it..but since we skipped the tiger hills due to the bad weather so i insisted him to visit Dali monastry atleast for 10 mins..so he agreed ..me along with my wife reached the monastry at about 4pm. The main monastry was at the top as we proceeded upwards we were surprised to reach the area. The monastry was very beautifully built covered with fog at that time(due to the weather) which has further enhanced its beauty.. the sounds of chanting could be heard from inside the main building so we thought it might be restricted to enter during prayers.. so we hurriedly clicked some pictures outside itself and thought to Move out as the driver was waiting in the car.. The sound of chanting attracted me so i moved to the entrance area and was listening to it very cautiously.. a monk noticed me and asked me to enter to inside ..which was not expected..(felt very happy) I didnot think twice and immediately entered ..where i saw about 100’s of monks chanting together.. uttering same words.. some beating the drums and some playing gayling(from mouth).. which collectively was though loud but was very peaceful..all monk were sitting in groups(lanes) i felt like each of them has their own responsibility in the prayer.. they also offered us hot tea amidst the prayer.. It felt like nothing could be more peaceful than sitting inside the prayer hall.. ignoring the drivers continous call we spent inside the hall for about an hour. I wish i could stay there for some more time but bound by the drivers time we decided to leave.. If i had not visited dali monastry that day i would had missed a big day in my life .. It had silently taught me more life lessons which is difficult to describe in words.. so for me its a must visit place 🙏

Dali monastery Very nice place, so peaceful and beautiful. Inside there’s huge statue of lord buddha. There’s a scenic view from outside, you can witness whole Darjeeling from there, Beside this there’s a museum where you can find the antique and unique weapon's and things that used to be used on that time. You can see the toy train passing from the main gate of this monastery. One should definitely visit Dali monastery if you’re coming to darjeeling, such a spiritual and happening place.

But if you are coming for a picnic, if you are coming with your family, you must definitely visit here for a picnic. The tickets are only for ₹15 to ₹20. But after going to this place you will feel as if you have paid ₹500 for this ticket. It is a very lovely botanical garden. Lloyd Botanical Gardens is a serene gem tucked away in Darjeeling, full of natural beauty and quiet charm. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Alok Tiwari, the beat officer there—a gem of a person himself. As a beat officer, he oversees and protects this section of the forest and gardens, ensuring its preservation. Talking to him was both insightful and enjoyable; he shared fascinating details about the garden’s history and biodiversity. It turned into more than just a visit—it felt like a shared moment of appreciation for nature and heritage.

A quiet spot in Darjeeling with some interesting specimen trees and lots of green and rest spots. Some of the gardens like the herb garden are neglected and not clear anymore. Quite hilly, like all of Darjeeling, could be a wonderful a great spot with a bit more maintenance of gardens and facilities. Better in spring for flowers I'd say.

It was pretty high cliff the walk, but the experience was good. Beware of monkeys, the could steal your footwear. Apart from that, the experience was so good that I cannot express much. It was a blissful place with multiple Sanctum of different Hindu Deities. The main attraction was Mahakal Temple. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 The peaceful environment made me emotional for a moment. Darjeeling Mall Road isn’t just a pretty spot—it’s where so many of our childhood memories were made. From munching on hot momos in the chilly air to racing past the bookshops and watching the ponies go by, everything felt a bit magical back then. That view of Kanchenjunga at sunset? Still unforgettable. The mix of tourists, locals, and that cool mountain breeze made it feel like its own little world. Even now, walking down that road feels like stepping right back into the past.

Darjeeling Mall Road is truly the heart of the hill town — a place where time seems to slow down. I loved strolling along the wide open stretch, surrounded by colonial-era charm, cozy cafés, and little shops selling woollens, curios, and tea. The cool mountain breeze, the sound of people chatting and horses trotting by, and the stunning view of the Kanchenjunga peaks in the distance make it a perfect spot to just sit back and soak in the vibe. One of the highlights for me was the tea-tasting experience at Golden Tips, where I sampled some of the finest Darjeeling blends and learned how distinct each flush tastes. Whether it’s enjoying a cup of hot coffee at Keventer’s or watching the sunset near Chowrasta, Mall Road captures the real essence of Darjeeling.

Darjeeling's Mall Road, often used interchangeably with Chowrasta, is the vibrant heart and social center of the town. It's a flat, open-air promenade that is completely vehicle-free, making it the most popular spot for both locals and tourists to stroll, relax, and socialize. Here’s a quick guide to what you can expect: What to Do at Mall Road Stroll and Relax: The main activity is to simply walk the loop, which goes around Observatory Hill. The atmosphere is peaceful, and there are numerous benches where you can sit, enjoy the crisp mountain air, and watch the world go by. Enjoy Kanchenjunga Views: On a clear day, the Mall offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the entire Kanchenjunga mountain range. The eastern side of the loop (past the Raj Bhavan) is particularly famous for this. Pony Rides: A popular activity, especially for children, is taking a pony ride around the Mall. Shopping: The area is lined with a mix of modern boutiques and historic shops. You can find: Darjeeling Tea: Famous shops like Nathmulls Tea and Golden Tips offer a wide variety of local teas to sample and buy. Woolens & Apparel: Numerous small stalls and shops sell sweaters, shawls, jackets, and hats. Handicrafts & Souvenirs: Look for shops like Habeeb Mullick & Son (one of the oldest) for curios, silver jewelry, and Tibetan handicrafts. Famous Eateries Mall Road is home to some of Darjeeling's most iconic places to eat: Glenary's: A heritage institution with a bakery and cafe on the ground floor (famous for breakfast, pies, and cakes) and a restaurant/bar upstairs. Keventer's: Known for its classic English breakfast (sausages, bacon, eggs) and milkshakes, all served on a famous open-air terrace with fantastic views. Kunga Restaurant: A short walk from the Mall, this small, family-run eatery is beloved for its authentic Tibetan food, especially momos and thukpa. Key Sights On and Around the Mall Chowrasta: The main square itself, which means "four roads meeting." It has a statue of the Nepali poet Bhanubhakta Acharya. Observatory Hill & Mahakal Temple: The Mall Road circles this hill. A steep climb up from the Mall leads you to the Mahakal Temple, a sacred spot for both Hindus and Buddhists, which sits at the top.

Darjeeling Mall, also known as Chowrasta, is truly the heart of Darjeeling. It’s a beautiful open space surrounded by mountains, pine trees, and old colonial-style buildings. I loved walking here — the air felt so fresh, and every corner had its own charm. It’s not just a market, it’s an experience. You’ll see people sitting on benches sipping tea, tourists taking pictures, children enjoying horse rides, and locals chatting happily. The sound of the prayer bells from nearby Mahakal Temple makes the place even more peaceful. There are many small shops selling woollen clothes, souvenirs, and Darjeeling tea. Some prices are a bit high, but with a smile and a little bargaining, you can get good deals. Cafes around the Mall are cozy — perfect for a cup of tea or coffee with a mountain view. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon. In the evening, the place glows under street lights and feels calm and romantic. But at night, most shops close early, so don’t plan for late shopping. Yes, it can get crowded during holidays, and sometimes you’ll see horses and stray dogs around, but that’s part of its natural hill-station vibe. Overall, Darjeeling Mall is a place to relax, breathe, and feel the real spirit of Darjeeling. You can sit quietly, watch people, enjoy the fog rolling in, and feel like time has slowed down. ⭐ My Rating: 4.7 / 5 🕊️ Vibe: Calm, lively, and full of local flavor ☕ Must-Do: Have tea, take a slow walk, and capture the sunrise or sunset view

I’ve visited 3–4 times, and every time, the food has been on point. ▪️ Highly recommend the Chef’s Special Pizza – yes, it’s a bit pricey, but the taste and thin crust totally make up for it. Delicious! ▪️ Coffee lovers, you’re in for a treat. Their coffee is smooth, rich, and the perfect companion for Darjeeling weather. ▪️ Also try the whole momo – filling, juicy, and something a little different from the usual. ▪️ Live music alert! They have live performances on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays – adds a really nice vibe to your evening. ▪️ Thinking of working from a café? This is a great option on weekdays or non-rush hours. Just check their timing on Google before heading. ▪️ Seating options galore – choose from balcony seating with views or cozy indoor spaces. ▪️ Staff are lovely – very polite, well-trained, and attentive. You’ll feel well taken care of. ▪️ Washrooms are clean and aesthetic, which is always a huge plus! ▪️ The entire space is clean, stylish, and inviting. I’d happily come back again and again!

By far the best pizzas in D-town. It is wood fired pizzas expertly crafted by an Italian (yes…no kidding). The pepperoni and the mushroom ones were particularly good. It also has decent cocktails and the interiors done by Namgyal is archy and pleasing to the eye. The events are also well curated with good service, music and an excellent crowd. Keep up the same standard.

This pizzeria is an absolute gem. The wood-fired pizzas are perfectly crafted. The ambiance is cozy with a panoramic view of tea gardens, making it a great spot to relax after exploring the Mall Road. The staff is friendly and attentive, adding to the warm vibe. Highly recommended for pizza lovers visiting the hills! 🍕🔥 ⚠️ Note: The location pinned on Google Maps is incorrect. We had trouble finding it as even the locals couldn’t point us directly. The actual location is on Dr Zakir Hussain Road, located within Hotel Broadway Boutique, on the second floor.

Historical landmark
Tenzing Rock, located in Darjeeling, is a significant training site for aspiring climbers at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Named after Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who used to practice climbing on this rock, it holds historical significance as he demonstrated a climb without safety equipment to Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. Climbers can experience a thrilling 40-foot ascent with assistance from an instructor above.
It's a huge natural rockon the main road in Darjeeling. In the memory of World famous rock climber Tenzing Norgay, The man who created history by climbing Mount Everest first time and create world record. As a Indian I was so excited to see the rock and decide to climb. Its not too hard to climb but also not so easy. You will get all the accessories of rock climbing like rope, carabina, safety belt etc at the cost of ₹150.

Great scenic beauty. A mid size rock is there for trekking. Charges 100 rs per head. But the area is small and crowded. Some small shops are associated here for winter clothing, street foods and all. If you are a trekking lover you can definitely visit this place. No doubt this place is beautiful.
Moumita M — Google review
It's named after Tenzing Norgay, who, along with Edmund Hillary, was one of the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. It's a huge natural rock on the main road in Darjeeling. The rock is maintained by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and is used for rock climbing training. There’s a small walkway where you can enjoy the sight. The view is filled with pine forests, entire valley was lightly covered in mist and fog, which made the place look stunning. It was beautiful, refreshing, and perfect for some nature photography or simply spending a few calm moments away from the crowd. It may be not a large destination, but it's popular and must-visit for who wants a mix of nature, and a bit of mountain spirit in their Darjeeling trip. I purchased some tea from the roadside shop here.
Neegar A — Google review
Tenzing Rock Point is one of the popular stops on the local day tour of Darjeeling, and it's conveniently located close to the main town area, which makes it easily accessible. This spot is named after the legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, and it features a large, steep rock formation standing tall near the edge of a valley. The rock itself may seem simple at first glance, but it holds deep importance in the world of mountaineering and serves as a symbol of strength and achievement. Even if you're not into climbing, the surroundings and the calm atmosphere make this a lovely place to visit. One of the main attractions at Tenzing Rock is the rock climbing experience offered here at a mere cost of INR 100. Right opposite the main rock, there’s a separate hill slope where tourists can try basic climbing under expert supervision. It’s a fun activity for people of all ages who want to try something adventurous during their Darjeeling trip. Sadly, when we visited, the weather was not on our side—it had been raining heavily since morning, and the climbing activities were shut down for safety reasons. So, if you're planning a visit, do check the weather beforehand or keep an umbrella or raincoat handy in case it suddenly turns wet, as it often does in the hills. Even without the adventure activity, the place has its own peaceful charm. There’s a small walkway that takes you to a viewpoint where you can enjoy the sight of the lush green valley below. The view is filled with pine forests, and during our visit, the entire valley was lightly covered in mist and fog, which made the place look straight out of a postcard. It was quiet, refreshing, and perfect for some nature photography or simply spending a few calm moments away from the crowd. Surrounding the area, there are also around 15-20 food stalls that serve hot tea, Maggi, momos, and other quick snacks. Enjoying a hot cup of tea in the cool mountain air, with mist floating around, is a simple pleasure that adds to the whole experience. Tenzing Rock may not be a large or flashy tourist destination, but it's definitely a must-visit for anyone who wants a mix of nature, peace, and a bit of mountain spirit in their Darjeeling trip.

Tenzing Rock is a famous tourist destination in Darjeeling. Although the rock is much large or tall, it gives experienced mountaineers an opportunity to test their skills. When we visited it, there were about two dozen visitors there, some actually attempting to climb the rock. Good spot to give training in rock climbing or mountain climbing.

This is an awesome place to visit with family and friends 😊.the waterfalls, environment, ambience, view everything is too good. If anyone goes there surely they will enjoy it. Me and my family go there twice and we like this place, especially my grandfather likes this place too much ,although he can't climb stairs but still he enjoyed it. You don't need to enter and the ticket price is also reasonable. But there was a thing that you knew before you went to visit, that is the price of everything there is 5 rupees more than the MRP.

Wowwww what a beautiful place,,,,The Rock Garden is a very beautiful place. You can climb very high and there are many waterfalls, but the road to get here is very bad.You have to be very careful here, the road here is very steep. Since you have to go down a lot, the road is very bad, but once you go, you are bound to feel better.

Okay listen—if you think this is just a cute little picnic spot with a pretty waterfall… THINK AGAIN. I went in thinking it’s a chill place. Ten minutes in, I was climbing stairs like I was in a Himalayan boot camp! 🥵💪 You have to walk… and walk… and WALK. At one point, I thought I’d need oxygen and a rescue team. My legs filed an official complaint against me halfway up. 😩 BUT—plot twist—the views? STUNNING. Like nature said, “Yeah I made you suffer, but here’s your reward.” The waterfall is beautiful, the rocks are dramatic, and the vibe is like a nature spa if you ignore the 100 people taking selfies all around you. 📷💦 Always packed. You won’t be alone unless you visit at sunrise (and even then, uncle-ji with the DSLR will be there before you). So final verdict: Great for Instagram, terrible for lazy people. Wear shoes. And if you can’t walk a lot—just look at the pictures online and save your knees. 😂

Nestled in the heart of Darjeeling, the Himalayan Tibet Museum stands as a vibrant tribute to Tibetan culture and history. This captivating museum is not just a collection of artifacts; it’s an immersive experience that delves into the rich tapestry of Tibetan life, traditions, and spirituality. Visitors can explore an array of exhibits, including a stunning 3-D model of the Himalayas and various artworks that reflect the essence of this unique heritage.
The Himalayan Tibetan Museum is an amazing place that holds a treasure trove of Tibet's history, much of which I wasn’t aware of before visiting. The museum is very well maintained, and the exhibits are thoughtfully presented. The best part is that everything is explained in English as well, making it accessible to a broader audience. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn more about Tibet's rich culture and history!

The Himalayan Tibet Museum is an unexpected hidden gem in Darjeeling. Only 50 rupees to enter and you could easily spend an hour here and still not read everything. What is most impressive is the interior decoration. Beautifully painted beams, diaromas and displays. A scale model of Potala Palace as soon as you enter. The museum covers Tibetan Buddhism, the Tibetan people and the life and times of the Dalai Lama. The basement floor is a life history and photographs of the current Dalai Lama. Staff here are super friendly. Well worth the visit.

A peaceful and eye-opening place. I randomly stumbled upon the Himalayan Tibet Museum while walking near Mall Road – and I’m so glad I did. It’s a small but beautiful space filled with Tibetan culture, history, and spirituality. You’ll see thangka paintings, prayer wheels, Buddha statues, old photographs, and even a 3D map of Tibet. Everything is arranged with so much care and meaning. The lady at the counter was very kind and explained a few things with such passion—it really added to the experience. It’s quiet inside, very calming, and makes you feel connected to something deeper. Spent about 30–40 minutes here. The ticket is just ₹50 per person, which is honestly nothing for the kind of peace and learning you get in return. If you’re in Darjeeling and want a short break from the crowd, do visit. It’s not a “big” museum, but it leaves a big impact.

There’s a calm vibe here—ideal for families, couples, or even solo travelers looking for peace and fresh air. Rock Garden in Darjeeling is one of the most peaceful and refreshing places I’ve ever visited. It’s a beautiful spot surrounded by green hills, flowing waterfalls, and colorful flowers — a true gift of nature. The main attraction is the waterfall that flows down through the rocks, creating a calming sound that instantly relaxes your mind. The garden is built in steps or layers, and every level gives a new and more stunning view. The cool mist from the waterfall feels magical, especially on sunny days. There are benches, viewpoints, and small bridges where you can sit, click pictures, or just enjoy the sound of water and birds. The entire place is clean and well-maintained, and you’ll find small tea stalls nearby for snacks or Maggi — which tastes extra special in the mountain air! Reaching the Rock Garden is a bit of an adventure — the road is steep and full of turns, but the journey itself is beautiful. You can see tea gardens, small houses, and local life along the way. If you love photography or peaceful natural spots, this place is a must-visit. Early morning or late afternoon visits are best for soft light and fewer crowds. Yes, the road can be bumpy, but once you reach there, it’s completely worth it. The freshness, the sound of the waterfall, and the mountain breeze make you forget everything else. ⭐ My Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) 🌿 Vibe: Calm, refreshing, and naturally beautiful 📍 Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and carry some water — lots of steps to climb, but every step is worth it!

Ticket price is 30rs/person Rock Garden is one of the best places to visit in Darjeeling. It is a beautiful sightseeing spot featuring a stunning waterfall that originates from a height of around 3,500 feet. You can enjoy the view of the waterfall from the base, and if you climb up the path, you'll reach an excellent spot for photography and capturing videos of the scenic walking trail. From the upper side, you’ll get some of the best photo opportunities with a panoramic view of the waterfall. It’s also a peaceful place to sit and relax, making it a must-visit location in Darjeeling.

A beautiful and peaceful spot nestled in the hills, with tiered gardens, waterfalls, and great photo opportunities. The drive down is scenic (and a bit thrilling), with narrow roads and sharp turns. Once there, you’re greeted by lush greenery, stone walkways, and cascading water — perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. ⚠️ However, avoid visiting during heavy monsoon season. The area becomes slippery, and the road down can be dangerous due to landslides or poor visibility. Best to visit during clear weather for safety and to truly enjoy the place. Overall, a nice spot for nature lovers — just check the weather before you go!

It was a great experience to visit this place on a full monsoon day. Though a gush of showers delayed our journey by an hour, it empowered the stream by many folds. The green hills, pretty pines and the silvery stream with colorful flowers and water polished shining rocks make the place really beautiful. It may take up to 2 hours iff people want to explore all the paths of the garden. With short cut routes, it may take an hour to reach the top point and return.

DHR (Toy Train) Information & Booking Centre offers a unique experience aboard the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, one of India's few operational hill railways. As it winds through the town, the train's stoppages provide ample time to appreciate the stunning scenery and rich culture. While some may find it overpriced and hyped, for first-time visitors to Darjeeling, it can be a dream come true.
One of an oldest and historical "Toy Train" railway station called Darjeeling Railway Station. This is very famous and known to almost all the persons in India. If you visit Darjeeling and haven't visited this place? Can not ne possible. Now a days it is difficult to find tickets availability to travel in this train. There are 4 or 5 different time slots per day is available and you can book this tickets through IRCTC portal with finding Station called "Darjeeling DJ to Darjeeling DJRZ" which will be more convenient to you. This will charge you 1000/- Rs. Approx per head (including to and fro) but better to book in advance as per your convenience. Must visit this Station once 👍🏻

Very poorly managed train ride. From the ticketing process to the experience of train needs a huge improvement. The train ride has poor experience due the cleanliness issue and pathetic management. The seats are dirty and cramped up, often broken. The size of the seats are good for children to sit by. No proper arrangements to know the schedule or timings as well as no information of stops are displayed. Didn’t feel like a maintained heritage set up which charges about 1000 plus per head for this useless travel. Can be purely skipped. Do treks and take walking tours in Darjeeling.

Do you wish to enjoy a train joy ride amidst mountains? Here is your chance. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) toy train from Darjeeling to ghum is one of the best tourist's joy rides. It was accorded the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, and said to be Asia's highest railway station at 7407ft. Running from 1880, crossing Dali Monastery and the famous Batasia loop, it covers beautiful scenic beauty of the mountain ranges and evergreen forests full of local people with a welcoming smile. The Batasia Loop is a spiral railway created to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. At this point, the track spirals around over itself over a hilltop. It is said to be commissioned in 1919. A must visit for all, the reservation has to be done in advance from IRCTC. The station is very close to the Mall Road and has helpful staff.

Mesmerizing views of steam locomotives plying on cute little fairytale tracks, hot steaming dumplings and a quaint clock tower, this station is an unmissable tourist spot irrespective of whether one has booked a joyride. The station is adequately sheltered from the rain and offers great shots of steam engines juxtaposed against modern diesel locos. An absolute treat for train lovers.

You can avoid it, reasons are below...It passes through roads and traffic, if u have gone to various tourist places in Darjeeling by road then u would have already covered the route multiple times, it's too expensive, there is too much delay sometimes as per reviews it's 2 hrs delay, I waited for more than an hour, u may spoil your whole day just for one train ride and miss other important points of visit. Photography can be done at the station, tickets can be booked through IRCTC site.

Fayez A — Google review
I’ve had combination of experience with DHR joyride as Ive booked tickets for 1:30 slot and reached there at around 1:10. Waiting for the ride to start at 1:30, station master made an announcement of delay by 30 minutes on which we waited till 2:00. After which they made an announcement again saying the ride to be late by another 30 minutes. People had patience and waited for another 30 minutes. Again at 2:30 they announced all the three trains to be cancelled due to technical issues. People were disappointed and left the station after waiting for 1-1:30 hours in an uncomfortable setting. Then few men gathered and decided to talk to the station master and station manager. After a long discussion and wait they agreed to run one train on a condition of gathering a minimum of 50 pax. Then they gave a form to fill and booked seats on a condition to pay in cash only. At 3:00 the cash was collected from the lot of people on a condition again that if this engine will not work then no money will be refunded to any of the traveller. After long hours of wait the ride finally started at 3:40 along with 3 more trains that were already scheduled for 3:40. The station staff was fooling the travellers who came so far and waited for long hours with poor facilities as the waiting room was fishy, lots of flies were there and the conditions of the washroom was terrible. This was the condition of Unesco world heritage site. It’s not that they cannot manage it to be better, they are just not bothered about the poor conditions and the unexpected behaviour of the staff while putting the trains to work on their own terms.

The photographs and artefacts are interesting and professionally presented. The mountain dioramas are especially good. Unfortunately no photography is allowed inside. Best part of my day was spent here. The pictures aren't allowed inside. So I couldn't take any. But I'll brief on what exactly made my experience here a memorable one. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is one of the premium institutes in India. You may as well call it the IIT of mountaineering. We met an administrative officer, who explains us about the institute, his own experience and about the students. The stories were chilling and mind blowing. Now coming to the museum. You'll see the equipment and the rug sacks carried by The great Tensing Norgay, Sir Edmond Hillary, the paper cut outs of the Legendary mountaineers and their life. You need atleast 1.30 hours to read all these. See the photos. Check out the Himalayan Range simulators. You'll definitely feel so small in front of these mountains and these OG mountaineers. This is a place for goosebumps and inspirational. A must visit. Entry fee is Rs 110 including the visit to the Zoo and the HMI.

If you want to climb Himalaya, then you need to get trained here. Place is for both, tourist as well as trainee ( mount climbers). Learn the history and about great Mr Tenzin. Tourist not allowed at trainee spot, but they have a small paid set for some climbing 🧗‍♂️ experience, do try it. Museum is big and well maintained. They have showed what it takes to climb one of the biggest mountains in world. You might find some souvenirs.

Museum
The DHR Ghum Railway Museum, situated at the Ghoom Railway Station in Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India, is a treasure trove of artifacts and photographs showcasing the rich heritage of the Darjeeling Himalayan toy train. This museum houses the oldest model of Toy Train engine - the Baby Sivok. It is one of three museums dedicated to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways and was established in 2000.
The Ghum Railway Museum, located right next to the historic Ghum Railway Station — the highest railway station in India — offers a fascinating and detailed look into the glorious past of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). For anyone visiting Darjeeling, this museum is a must-visit to truly appreciate the rich legacy of the toy train. As you step into the open grounds of the museum, you're welcomed by several old wagons that were once used for goods transportation along the DHR line. Each wagon stands as a silent witness to the countless journeys made across the steep Himalayan terrains. Informative signboards around the premises narrate the story of how the DHR was constructed, the challenges faced by the engineers, and the significance of Ghum station being situated at such an incredible altitude compared to sea level. As you move indoors, the museum beautifully unfolds the entire timeline of the DHR, starting from the 1840s when the idea was first proposed during British rule. Large, well-detailed boards explain every phase of its construction — right from inception to the present day. Visitors can learn about the major milestones, such as the unfortunate loss of the DHR arm to Kalimpong due to devastating natural disasters. This lost branch serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by mountain railways. A special section is dedicated to explaining the brilliant engineering techniques like the loops and Z-reverses, which were specially designed to tackle the steep slopes. Detailed boards provide information about each station along the journey to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), with elevations, historical facts, and rare old photographs making it an enriching experience. Adding to the charm, the museum houses original railway artifacts used during the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a real sense of how rail travel was once managed. There's even a miniature replica of the DHR, complete with its famous blue steam engine that has become a symbol of Darjeeling itself. Visitors can also see a detailed miniature of the famous Batasia Loop, which is an engineering marvel. What’s most captivating is the gallery of rare original photographs — from early construction days, images of the steam engines chugging through misty mountains, to recent images of the steam loco shed at Darjeeling. These photos give you a sense of the hard work, innovation, and sheer determination that went into building this UNESCO World Heritage marvel. Overall, the Ghum Railway Museum is a beautifully curated tribute to one of India's most historic railways. It offers an immersive journey into the past, connecting visitors with the spirit of exploration and adventure that the DHR still represents today. Whether you're a history buff, a train enthusiast, or simply someone curious about Darjeeling's heritage, this museum promises an experience that is both educational and deeply moving. Make sure to visit and witness firsthand the incredible story of the DHR — a railway that not only conquered mountains but also won hearts across generations.
Ronit G — Google review
History of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway The DHR was built in the late 19th century, with construction starting in 1879 and reaching Darjeeling in 1880. It was designed to facilitate trade and tourism in the hilly region and has played an essential role in the development of Darjeeling as a prominent hill station. The museum is situated at an elevation of about 2,258 meters (7,407 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest railway museums in the world. Ghum is just a few kilometers from the popular hill station of Darjeeling, making it accessible to tourists and railway enthusiasts alike. The museum showcases various artifacts related to the DHR, including vintage locomotives, carriages, and equipment used in the operation of the railway. Visitors can see steam engines, old photographs, maps, and other memorabilia that highlight the construction and operation of the railway. There are model displays representing historical and contemporary train setups that provide a visual treat for visitors. Historical Context: The museum highlights the socio-economic impact of the railway on the region, its role in the growth of tourism, and its influence on the local culture and economy. Restoration Projects: Some displays include ongoing restoration projects aimed at preserving the historical locomotives and railcars. The museum is designed to be engaging for visitors of all ages. Guided tours are often available, enhancing the educational experience as visitors can learn in-depth facts and stories behind the railway's history.

A very small museum, yet significant part of history. It contains some very old documents and some old photos. It is one of the three DHR museums, other two are at Kurseong and Sukna. The museum exhibits are spread across two areas: 1) A large but fenced open space next to the railway station which once used to be the goods and locomotives shed, and 2) An indoor museum room which is located upstairs in the station building.

"I visited the Ghum Museum on 20th November 2024. It's a charming place that offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Perched at an altitude of about 8,000 feet, the iconic Yiga Choeling Monastery (a.k.a. the Ghoom Monastery) in Ghoom is one of Darjeeling’s oldest and most revered Buddhist monasteries. Built in 1850 by the Mongolian monk Lama Sherab Gyatso, this sacred site offers a serene escape from the bustling hill town, surrounded by the crisp mountain air and the peaceful chants of monks. At the heart of the monastery is its massive 15-foot-high statue of Maitreya Buddha, also known as the Future Buddha, which is said to be crafted from clay brought from Tibet. The monastery follows the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the same lineage as the Dalai Lama. Its walls are adorned with intricate thangka paintings, ancient manuscripts, and vibrant murals, depicting Buddhist teachings and life stories of great Lamas. Interesting Facts: 1. One of the Oldest in Darjeeling: Yiga Choeling Monastery has been a center of Buddhist learning and meditation for almost 175 years. 2. Ties to Tibet: Many of its sacred texts and artifacts were brought from Lhasa, Tibet, making it a repository of rich Tibetan culture. 3. A Meditative Retreat: Visitors often find the monastery to be a perfect spot for self-reflection and mindfulness, with breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga range on clear days. Verdict: Whether you’re a history buff, a spiritual seeker, or just someone who enjoys a quiet moment in the lap of the Himalayas, the Yiga Choeling Monastery is a must-visit. It’s not just a monastery — it’s a doorway into Tibet’s spiritual heritage, right in the heart of Darjeeling. Serenity, culture, and history — all rolled into one mystical experience!

Tiger Hill Observatory, located in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is a renowned sunrise viewpoint offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountains. Situated at an altitude of 2,590 meters, it provides an unparalleled vantage point to witness the stunning spectacle of the first rays of sunlight illuminating the snow-capped peaks of Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga.
Tiger Hill Sunrise Observatory Point is a must-visit destination in Darjeeling, renowned for its spectacular views of the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range. Located approximately 30 to 40 minutes from the city center, depending on traffic conditions, it is advisable to schedule your visit between 3:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. to witness the enchanting first light illuminating the snow-covered peaks. Given Darjeeling's unpredictable weather, it is prudent to carry an umbrella or raincoat, as thick clouds can obscure the majestic Himalayan panorama. During our visit, inclement morning weather compelled us to shift our excursion to the afternoon; however, Tiger Hill still delivered a breathtaking experience. The landscape was remarkable, characterized by layers of forest-covered mountains extending toward the horizon, set against a vibrant blue sky dotted with drifting clouds. The scene evoked a sense of standing within a living masterpiece. The drive to the observatory was equally picturesque, winding through protected forests where one might encounter rare Himalayan wildlife, such as the elusive black bear. The ambiance at Tiger Hill exudes tranquility, offering visitors a deep sense of calm and connection with nature. The cool breeze enhances this serene environment, making it an ideal location to simply relax, appreciate the stunning surroundings, and experience the magic of the mountains. Additionally, local vendors are present, providing cozy woolen caps and shawls for those seeking warmth. In conclusion, whether one arrives for the sunrise or chooses to visit later in the day, Tiger Hill is an unforgettable experience that promises to leave a lasting impression.
Atanu P — Google review
We went there at 4.30am. there were already around 50 cars and hundreds of tourists present before us. There is no observatory here. You just pick a spot and hope to see the view of the mountains especially The Kanchanjunga. If it's a cloudy day then you won't. Pick a place near the North East corner so that you can see the sunrise and the mountain together. There's an under construction building where you can sit as well. There are a few vendors who serve momo, maggie and some tea. TIP : Ask your driver to park the car far so that you can get out of the place soon. Or else it'll take easily around 45 -60 mins just to come out of the traffic jam.

Breathtaking Experience at Sunrise! Tiger Hill is an absolute must-visit when you're in Darjeeling. Waking up early for the sunrise is totally worth it — the view of the first rays hitting the snow-capped peaks of Kanchenjunga is nothing short of magical. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Everest! The crowd gathers quite early, so I recommend arriving before 4:30 AM to get a good spot. Dress warmly, as it gets quite chilly in the early morning. There’s a viewing tower available, but the open hill area has its own charm too. Vendors selling hot tea and snacks nearby really add to the experience — sipping on Darjeeling tea while watching the Himalayas glow orange is unforgettable. The roads up are a bit narrow and winding, so be ready for a bumpy but scenic drive.

A Magical Sunrise Experience! Tiger Hill is truly one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever visited. Watching the sunrise from this viewpoint is nothing short of magical. As the first rays of the sun touch the snow-capped peaks of the Kanchenjunga, the sky lights up with shades of orange, pink, and gold — a sight that stays with you forever. The early morning chill, the peaceful atmosphere, and the panoramic view of the Himalayan range make the entire experience unforgettable. If you're lucky and the sky is clear, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Everest in the distance! The place is well-organized with a dedicated observatory and proper viewing platforms. I highly recommend reaching early to get a good spot and enjoy a cup of hot tea from the local vendors while waiting for nature’s show to begin. A must-visit when in Darjeeling!

The highest railway station in India located at 7407 ft above sea level. It has a museum within the premises. The entry to the museum comes complimentary with the toy train ticket. Well maintained premises. Don’t miss standing on the foot over bridge while the toy train whistles underneath.

The station is one of the oldest stations of the country . It’s the final stop of toy train. It has a small rail museum. Between your rides to and fro, they will give a break for around 20-30 minutes where you can explore the museum. It has details of the mountain railway , some old carts , pictures , parts and chains of old rails and the big old rail route map of the entire place

This is the highest railway station of India. And its the UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you onboard to the Toy Train joy ride from Darjeeling Station then it will be the last stop. You can visit Ghum Museum just beside the railway station. Lovely experience!

Ever since we planned the trip to Darjeeling, I was excited about the Gym station and boarding the toy train. Ghum is really a nostalgic place to hang out. You can spend hours by just looking at the people and trains moving.
Souvik M — Google review
The highest railway station in India and 14th highest in the world established during the colonial era in the year 1881which also consists of a museum. We visited ghum railway station on the month of august 2025 during our steam engine Joyride travel from Darjeeling to Ghum and spent about 30mins in ghum. The weather was rainy and cold..so having a cup of milk tea from a shop in the railway station delivered a sort of temporary relief to me. We (turn by turn)clicked many pictures here and there all around the station as we never visited such old station earlier before So collectively this is how we treasured our memory in ghum and its railway station.
Rajjeet D — Google review
Marvelous experience it was: India's highest railway station. You are advised to book the tickets in the Joy Train. That is an unforgettable experience indeed. The heritage train, its blue compartments, the narrow rail lines that run through the towns, the occasional whistle from the engine room ... everything is still etched in our memories. As you wait for your train, you will hear the whistle from a distance first, slowly becoming louder and louder. The Ghum Station is a tourist destination in Darjeeling and you must come there to see the legacy of a past.

Ghum Railway Station 🚂, the highest station in India (2,258 m) 🏔️, is a heritage marvel ✨. Famous for its toy train joy ride 🚋, it offers a nostalgic journey through misty hills 🌫️ & scenic valleys 🌄. With its old-world charm 🏛️ and a small museum 🖼️, it’s a must-visit for travelers 🌏.
Washim S — Google review
You can visit Ghum by road if you are in Darjeeling or by taking the toy/joy train (though absolutely not recommended for its high fare and the track completely on the road without any valley views or a different route.

Historical landmark
The Darjeeling Clock Tower, located near the city center and mall road, is a century-old structure that stands as a reminder of the colonial history of Darjeeling. Originally part of the Town Hall, it is now integrated into the Darjeeling Municipality building. The clock's bell chimes every hour and can be heard from the nearby Darjeeling Mall. This modest yet iconic landmark showcases British architectural style and adds a vintage charm to the town's landscape.
This is a most attractive heritage of darjeeling.. it's look too beautiful and mighty... people use this as a landmark... some months a fair organised inside or outside the clock tower..locals come with their handmade things or foods in this type of fairs..the products are really good material.

The Darjeeling Clock Tower, also known as Ghanta Ghar, is a historic landmark located in the heart of Chauk Bazaar, Darjeeling. This 100-foot-tall tower was constructed in 1921 as part of the Municipality Building and showcases a blend of neo-Gothic and neo-Classical architectural styles. The clock tower's bell chimes every hour, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the surrounding area. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the valley, explore nearby shops and cafes, and experience the local culture. The tower is open 24 hours a day and is a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. With its rich history and architectural beauty, the Darjeeling Clock Tower is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this charming hill station ¹ ² ³. I stay here for long time. Pijush

Darjeeling Clock Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in the town, and visiting it was a truly memorable experience. The classic old-world charm of the tower adds a unique character to the heart of Darjeeling. Surrounded by lively streets, local shops, and stunning hill views, the area feels vibrant yet peaceful. The architecture is beautiful, and it makes for a perfect photo spot—especially during early morning or evening when the town lights glow softly around it. The atmosphere nearby is always cheerful, with people walking, shopping, and enjoying the cool Darjeeling breeze. Whether you’re exploring the market, heading toward Chowrasta, or simply roaming around, the Clock Tower stands as a perfect reminder of Darjeeling’s heritage. A great place to stop, admire, and soak in the charm of the hills. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Darjeeling! ⛰️🕰️✨
Sameer D — Google review
A charming old clock tower that really catches the eye while walking to and from Mall Road. It stands tall with a quiet elegance and feels like a piece of the area’s identity. There’s something nostalgic about it — like it’s been silently watching over everything for years. While it adds a lot of charm during the day, it becomes quite hard to notice at night due to poor lighting. A bit of thoughtful illumination could make it shine after dark. Still, it’s a lovely and meaningful landmark that adds to the vibe of just being here.
Gaurav G — Google review
It's a historical landmark of Darjeeling and a symbol of colonial heritage situated in the prime location beside the Mall Road. It offers a vintage look and sophisticated and elegant architecture. But day by day with lack of maintenance it's becoming shabby and untidy building only.
Rohan R — Google review
The Darjeeling Clock Tower is often praised for its quiet elegance and historical significance,is a focal point in the city and a popular tourist attraction.it as an "old clock tower".
Risabh G — Google review
There’s something quietly magical about the moment when I first spot the Darjeeling Clock Tower in the heart of the town—its elegant stone façade rising amid the swirl of activity. Historically constructed between 1917 and 1921, this 100-foot tower was part of the colonial-era municipality and Town Hall, and its sturdy silhouette still commands attention today. I find myself drawn into the lively energy of the surrounding Chowrasta–Chauk Bazaar area, where the tower stands as a timeless sentinel. Locals and visitors weave around street vendors selling tea, snacks, and handicrafts. The tick of the clock and the faint chime every hour feel like the heartbeat of Darjeeling, marking time as effortlessly as the rolling mist drifts across the hills. As I step closer to admire its architectural charm—neo-Gothic and neoclassical elements blending seamlessly—the distant hills peek through gaps in the rooftops, offering a perfect contrast between natural grandeur and human history. Nightfall brings a different kind of allure. The clock tower glows softly under warm lighting, transforming into a beacon of nostalgia against the cool mountain air and shadowed outlines of Darjeeling’s colonial buildings. It evokes an era gone by, yet remains vibrantly alive in the present. Walking away, I carry with me a sense of continuity—how one structure can bridge centuries, reminding us that some landmarks endure not only in stone and gears, but in the stories and rhythms of daily life.

This exhilarating journey begins at Singamari station and takes you down to Tukvar, offering breathtaking views of the lush Bijanbari valley and the serene Little Rangeet River.

Darjeeling Tea Garden is an essential part of local tourism, offering a fantastic experience and producing some of the finest teas in the world. Visitors can explore beautiful tea estates, enjoy stunning views of the hills, and even try on traditional attire. The gardens also offer opportunities to purchase various types of tea and mementos from local shops. As one of the highest tea-growing regions, Darjeeling's teas are rich in antioxidants, making them highly sought after.
Peaceful, scenic, and so refreshing — a true Darjeeling experience Walking through the tea gardens of Darjeeling was honestly one of the most calming experiences of my trip. Everywhere you look, it’s just endless rows of green tea bushes gently curving along the hills, with soft mist floating through the air. It felt like nature was slowing everything down. The sound of leaves being plucked, the cool breeze, and the smell of fresh tea leaves all around—it was like stepping into a peaceful painting. I even stopped for a tea tasting, and the first flush Darjeeling tea was amazing—light, floral, and so fresh. I bought a few packets to bring a piece of that calm back home.

Beautiful Views and a Relaxing Spot The Darjeeling Tea Garden is a really nice place to visit if you’re in the area. The tea plantations are scenic, with green hills and that cool misty air you expect in Darjeeling. Perfect for taking in the views or snapping a few pics! You can also try fresh Darjeeling tea—it tastes good, very different than anything I’ve had before! But it can get a little crowded at times, which takes away from the peaceful vibe. But overall, it’s definitely worth a visit, especially if you love tea or just want to relax in a beautiful setting.

Do not buy tea here. It is completely fake. When you ask for Happy valley tea estate drivers definitely take you to this place and there is a small tea garden behind the stalls and you can experience tea trees there, but limit your experience only to that part. Tea sellers there sell tea by making you test good tea but the stuff they sell in sealed packets is just fake material. If you really want to buy then take risk and ask them to open one packet convincing them that you will pay for it and make tea from that packet, buy it only if you feel that tastes good. I'm sure they will not do that.

My visit to the Darjeeling Tea Gardens was an unforgettable experience filled with beauty, freshness, and peace. Nestled among the rolling hills of West Bengal, the tea gardens of Darjeeling are world-famous for producing the “Champagne of Teas.” As I arrived, I was greeted by the sight of endless green slopes covered with neatly lined tea bushes, shining under the gentle morning sun. The cool mountain breeze carried the soothing fragrance of fresh tea leaves, making the atmosphere truly magical. I visited one of the oldest tea estates, where workers, mostly women, were carefully plucking the tender leaves by hand — a skill passed down through generations. Watching them work so gracefully in the misty hills was both humbling and fascinating. Later, I toured the tea factory, where I learned about the different stages of tea processing — withering, rolling, fermenting, and drying. The entire process showed how much effort and dedication goes into every cup of Darjeeling tea. From the gardens, the view of the Kanchenjunga mountain range was breathtaking. I also enjoyed tasting freshly brewed tea, which had a light colour and a delicate aroma. Small cafés and souvenir shops near the gardens sold packets of authentic Darjeeling tea to take home. Overall, my visit to the Darjeeling Tea Gardens was not just a sightseeing trip but a refreshing experience that connected me deeply with nature. The calm hills, friendly locals, and soothing aroma of tea made it a memory I will cherish forever.

The Darjeeling tea garden is beautiful! You can see endless tea plants and hills. Walking around is really nice. Plus, there are shops on the roadside where you can buy amazing Darjeeling tea. It's a great place to enjoy nature and get some delicious tea. 🍵🌿 #SimpleJoys
Sudip M — Google review
Darjeeling Tea Garden is quite a nice place, though I wouldn’t say it’s the best experience I ever had. The garden spreads across gentle hills, and the air feels fresh with a light smell of tea leaves, which is pleasant. The view of the mountains in the distance looks beautiful, especially when the sun is out. However, on cloudy days, it gets quite misty and sometimes hard to see much. The workers in the garden were busy plucking leaves, and it was interesting to watch how carefully they did it. I wish there were more guided tours or boards explaining how the tea is made — it felt a bit confusing for someone like me who doesn’t know much about tea. There’s also a small tea shop nearby where you can try different varieties, but I found the prices a little on the higher side. Overall, Darjeeling Tea Garden is a calm and green place to spend an hour or two if you enjoy nature and want to see where the famous Darjeeling tea comes from. It’s not overly exciting, but it has a peaceful charm that slowly grows on you.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the "Toy Train," is a must-visit attraction in West Bengal, India. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a picturesque journey from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, showcasing stunning landscapes and colonial heritage. The historic narrow-gauge steam engine train, dating back to 1881, passes through lush tea gardens, forests, and towering bridges while providing breathtaking views of the Himalayas.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km (55 mi) long. It climbs from about 100 m (328 ft) above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 m (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the "Toy Train," offers a unique and enchanting journey through the picturesque landscapes of West Bengal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site runs from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, providing passengers with stunning views of lush tea gardens, rolling hills, and quaint mountain villages. The narrow-gauge tracks and vintage steam locomotives evoke a sense of nostalgia and charm, making the ride a memorable experience. The journey is characterized by its numerous loops and zigzags, including the famous Batasia Loop, where the train navigates a spiraling track with a panoramic view of the majestic Kanchenjunga. The toy train’s leisurely pace allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region. While the trains are well-maintained and the service is generally commendable, potential travelers should be prepared for occasional delays due to the challenging mountain terrain. Despite this, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway remains a beloved attraction, celebrated for its historic significance and breathtaking scenery. It is a must-experience adventure for anyone visiting the region.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway DHR as it’s called as it’s unique rustic charm. The toy train ride or the joy ride is really an amazing experience. Sitting on a toy train passing through the by lanes of Darjeeling with mountains view in the back drop is really a fabulous & memorable experience. An experience worth remembering & with lots of insta worthy pix & amazing video for your ever lasting memory. Everyone love this experience. Ticket price is high but for once you must visit this marvel if you have come this far. Loved every bit of the joy ride experience.

The ride is fun. We went from Darjeeling to Siliguri. Took around 7-8 hours. It is advisable to carry packed lunch. They pick up packed lunch from Tindharia station but since there are no trays in the seats it is very difficult to eat in the train. Plus the train goes along the road so there is no extra scenery you can view. The toilets were filthy, so squalid it was unusable for us
Shuvam C — Google review
To be very honest, the experience of a toy train from Darjeeling to Ghum was the worst and very boring. I paid 1000₹ for the diesel joy ride and it was a total waste of money. First a fall the train was half an hour late and there was no one to guide. If you get the mountainside window then you will be a little lucky but if you get the other side of the window then all you can see is the concrete jungle. I got to the other side and what I could do that count how many buildings do exist in Darjeeling also I got the opportunity to take a count on the number of pipes in the whole of Darjeeling. The way between the two stations is too congested and at a point, I was very bored and lost interest. I heard so much about this world UNESCO site but I wasn't at all impressed with the experience I had. If you have so much time to kill then you can still think of the joy ride. The only good part is that you can click some good pictures and show them off.

Sakya Guru Monastery was inaugurated on 17th December 1909 under the leadership of Amdo Lama and a local committee of notable Buddhists of the time. It was the second monastery to be built in Ghoom after Yiga-Choeling Old Ghoom Monastery, and was originally called New Buddhist Monastery. The original statues still stand today, depicting Guru Rimpoche as the main deity, flanked by Lord Buddha. To the left of this you can see the holy Kangpur (Sutras) and a smaller image of Kenchen Bodhisatta. To the right is a complete set of ‘Rinchen Terzed’ with an image of Choegyal Duetsen. Little monks during ritual In the beginning, the monastery was headed and steered by Amdo Lama himself until his passing in 1918. At this time the monastery fell in to a period of neglect. From 1935 onwards the main temple was converted to a school consisting of two classes. This school functioned until 1946 when it was moved to a building near Yiga-Choeling Old Ghoom Monastery. In 1959 His Holiness the Sakya Trizin, who was in Darjeeling after fleeing Sakya, in Tibet, requested that Dakpa Babu and the committee members of the Monastery make it available to house a group of Sakya Lamas who had also fled Tibet. At this time the Monastery had over 90 lamas and was headed by Gadhen Ponlop Tashi Tenzin as abbot and Geshe Tuchi Wangchuk, Geshe Tashi Namgyal, and Geshe Sherab Gyaltsen as the senior tutors. It was during this period, under very trying conditions, that that the learned lamas began the difficult task of recalling from memory the sacred texts of the Sakya tradition which were then handwritten on a daily basis. The first prayer book, ‘Cho jod Molam’ was printed in Darjeeling with seed money of 20 rupees donated by Po Jayang. In 1961, upon the suggestion of His Holiness Sakya Trizin Rinpoche, Khenpo Sangay Tenzin was appointed as abbot (mkhan po) in the Guru Sakya Monastery at Ghoom, to take charge of the monastic community in Ghoom, and to provide the necessary leadership. Khenpo Sangay Tenzin, a learned scholar, began his task in earnest. During his time most of the sacred Sakya texts were transcribed and printed under the monastic order of Sakya Guru Lhakang Do-Ngag Norbu Ling Choede Chenpo, Ghoom, Darjeeling, as the new seat of the Sakya order in exile and also as the first ever Sakya monastery in exile. Khenpo Sangay Tenzin initiated ‘Yar-Nye’, a summer retreat for all monks from 1962, a tradition which continues to date. In 1979 the (Shedra) College was also founded by Khenpo. In 1987, with the formal handing over of the monastery, Sakya Guru Monastery was registered as a Society within the West Bengal government. Khenpo Sangay Tenzin passed away in 1990, having served His Holiness Sakya Trizin and the Sakya order very faithfully in its early and difficult period, supported loyally by the monastic community. In 1997 Khen Rimpoche’s reincarnation Sakya Khentul Kunga Tenzin Gyaltsen was formally recognised. He successfully completed all the formal monastic trainings in 2002, and currently studies Buddhist philosophy at Sakya College in Rimbick. From 1992 to 2004 the monastery’s noble activities were carried out under the guidance of the late Khenpo Thupten Sangpo and later, in the year of 2005 His Holiness Sakya Trizin appointed Khenpo Palden Phuntsok as a chief abbot of the Guru Sakya Monastery.

Lebong Race Course is a historic racecourse located in Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. It is one of the highest altitude racecourses in the world, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,950 meters (6,400 feet) above sea level. The racecourse is nestled amidst the picturesque hills of Darjeeling, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The Lebong Race Course has a rich history and dates back to the British colonial era. It was established in 1885 and has since been an important venue for horse racing events in the region. The racecourse is known for its natural beauty and the unique experience it offers due to its high altitude. During the racing season, which typically runs from April to June, the racecourse comes alive with enthusiastic spectators and avid horse racing enthusiasts. The main event is the prestigious Governor's Cup, which attracts participants from various parts of the country. Apart from the Governor's Cup, other races and events are also held at the Lebong Race Course. The racecourse itself is a sprawling expanse of grassland with a well-maintained track for the horses. Visitors can enjoy the excitement of horse racing while enjoying the serene surroundings and panoramic views of the mountains. The ambiance and the colonial-era grandstand add to the charm of the place. If you are planning to visit the Lebong Race Course, it's advisable to check the racing schedule in advance and confirm the dates and timings of the events. Keep in mind that the schedule may vary from year to year, so it's best to gather the most up-to-date information from local sources or the official racecourse authorities before planning your visit.

I had an amazing stay at this family-friendly homestay! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the hosts went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The accommodations were comfortable, and the attention to detail in ensuring a family-friendly environment was impressive. From thoughtful amenities to a safe and enjoyable setting, it truly deserves a 5-star rating. We'll definitely be back!

Though the colonial name is still in use, no horseracing takes place nowadays. It's used as a helipad as the Indian Army takes its control. Also cultural and sporting events are arranged throughout the year. Mesmerizing views of Darjeeling can be envisaged from here.

Gombu Rock is a popular tourist attraction in Tibet. It's located on Lebong Cart Road, opposite Tenzing Rock, and is only used for rock climbing. The huge Tenzing rock is the opposite of Gombu Rock and there is a small temple adjacent to it. It's a great place to visit if you're interested in mountaineering, but be aware that it can be wet and cold during rainstorms.
Gombu Rock and Tenzing Rock are just opposite.. There is a small temple opposite of Gombu Rock. it's used for rock climbing.. Good place to visit and Great for non professional climbers.. You can climb Gombu Rock with some guided person at extra cost.. Some local food shops available.. Visit time 30minutes without guided climbing..

Situated on Lebong Cart Road, Darjeeling, Gombu Rock named after Nawang Gombu, nephew of Tenzing Norgay who was the first person to climb the Everest.

Saw this attraction on our way to tea estate and tea tasting spot. We didn’t get down here as it was not in our itinerary. Our cab driver and guide told us that there is some rock climbing activity which happens at this place at a cost. He mentioned they don’t maintain much safety measures and therefore it’s not recommended for us. Anyway, after witnessing towering beauty of zero point and Nathu La Pass, this rock seems a bit dwarf. You can get down at it to click some pictures perhaps.

Situated on Lebong Cart Road, Darjeeling, Gombu Rock named after Nawang Gombu, nephew of Tenzing Norgay who was the first person to climb the Everest twice. Gombu rock is generally used by the trainees of HMI and pro climbers. While climbing the Gombu rock there will always be guide who guides the tourist about what how they shall climb.

The famous Gombu Rock. Gombu Rock was named after Nawang Gombu, nephew of Tenzing who was the first person to climb the Everest twice, once in 1963 and then in 65. He took over as the Director of Field Training at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute after Tenzing retired in 1976. Both these rocks are used for rock climbing training by HMI.

It is opposite side of Trnzing rock. The rock usually use to practice jumaring and repelling. This is the practice area of HMI's BMC and AMC students. The rock area has two side one is front side where Jumaring and repelling practiced and other is back side of rock where we practice aiders.
Samyak M — Google review
Part of the famous duo of Tenzing and Gombu Rocks, this rock is the shorter of the two and is named after Gombu, nephew of Tenzing and also the first man to conquer Everest twice. Situated on the Lebang Cart Road, this rock is fairly visible from the road itself, and is regularly used by HMI students for rock climbing trainings. Relatively easier to climb when compared to the much taller and much more difficult and steep Tenzing Rock, aspiring climbers and tourists can climb by paying a minimal fee. For the less adventurous, there are road side stalls selling a multitude of Darjeeling delicacies which they can enjoy while admiring the rock!

The Japanese Buddhist Temple in Darjeeling is a serene and traditional temple with a multi-level pagoda that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It's part of a must-see list of attractions in Darjeeling, including the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Happy Valley Tea Estate, and more.
A unique and serene experience despite the heavy crowds and narrow approach roads. We had to walk most of the way due to traffic, even though it was close to our hotel. But the effort was worth it — the temple and Peace Pagoda are stunning, surrounded by lush gardens and vibrant flowers. The architecture is distinct and peaceful, making it a memorable visit. Ideal for those seeking calm and cultural depth.

Great place. One of the must visit spots. There is the Japanese temple and the peace pagoda, both are great. Many people visit there. It is located at the top of jalapahar hill about 2km from the clock tower. I would say it's magnificent.

Beautiful temple and Peace Pagoda, both located in the same premises. There is no entry fee, and on a clear day, you can also enjoy a stunning view of Kanchenjunga. The place offers a calm and mind-relaxing atmosphere and is definitely a must-visit. However, reaching here can be frustrating due to narrow roads, frequent traffic jams, and limited parking space.

Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple, popularly known as Japanese Buddhist Temple, Darjeeling was built in 1972 and is located just beside Peace Pagoda, Darjeeling. Showcasing classic Japanese style of architecture, it has two stories, with the main idol emerging in the 1st floor. This resplendent temple offers visitors a serene and quiet sanctum where they can meditate and seek inner peace.
Debajyoti D — Google review
The best place to find peace. Visit this temple during evening time and feel the good vibes by attending the prayer. The Buddhist prayer and the sound of drums make the place spiritual and pure in a complete manner. You can also enjoy the view of Kanchanjunga from the top of the Pagoda. I highly recommend this place during Darjeeling trip.
Nabarun B — Google review
During my travels through the serene hills of Darjeeling, one place that touched me deeply was the Japanese Buddha Temple, located near the Peace Pagoda. From the moment I stepped into the temple courtyard, flanked by two peaceful lion statues, I could sense the calming energy this place radiates. The clean, minimalist Japanese-style architecture with its bright white walls and red trims offered a unique aesthetic—elegant, spiritual, and welcoming. Inside, the soft chanting of “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” echoed through the prayer hall, led by monks in rhythmic harmony. As a traveler, I was invited to join in—a rare opportunity that allowed me to truly connect with the spiritual ambiance. Sitting on the floor, eyes closed, repeating the chant in unison with the monks was an incredibly grounding experience. Time seemed to slow down. The temple also acts as a peaceful entry point to the nearby Peace Pagoda, and together they represent a powerful message of global harmony and inner peace. What struck me most was the temple’s simplicity, yet profound sense of sacredness. The surrounding pine-covered hills, crisp mountain air, and distant views of the snow-capped Kanchenjunga only add to the magic. Unlike the crowded tourist spots, the Japanese Buddha Temple offers a quiet space to pause, reflect, and breathe. Whether you're spiritually inclined or simply seeking calm amidst Darjeeling’s vibrant buzz, this temple is a must-visit. It’s not just a destination—it’s a moment of peace.

Chowrasta Darjeeling is a bustling center of the city, serving as a meeting point of four roads. It offers stunning views of the Khangchendzonga mountain peak and is surrounded by beautiful natural ingredients such as green tea gardens and mesmerizing landscapes. Visitors can engage in various activities like visiting the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, exploring the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and experiencing the vibrant Darjeeling Carnival.
Wonderful place to hangout and walk. I went to Darjeeling for a holiday. This place is part of the mall road. Apparently, Mall road is very lengthy and Britishers used it for walking is what I got to know from my taxi driver. This particular chowrasta has a big open air theatre, fountains, small tea shops, and some benches to rest. One can have a good view of the hills and pine tree though a lot of power lines cross cross it. If one further takes a walk down the mall road, there are a lot of shops and landmarks of Darjeeling.

Joey's Pub, formerly a traditional British-style pub in a bungalow, has now relocated to the first floor of a modern building. Despite its updated look, the old pub run by Puran Gongba was what originally garnered its reputation. Nestled away from the touristy streets of Darjeeling, this cozy bar exudes colonial charm with its wooden interiors and offers a retreat for weary explorers.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had a wonderful time at Joys Pub. The atmosphere is lively yet cozy, making it a perfect place to hang out with friends. The music, the vibe, and the friendly service made the evening really enjoyable. We spent some great quality time together, and everything from the food to the drinks was just right. Definitely one of the best spots in town to relax and have fun with friends. Highly recommended!

The ambiance here is quite cool and holds a lot of potential, but unfortunately, the overall experience was significantly let down by the service and atmosphere management. When we visited, the place was completely empty and there was no music playing until we walked in. The most disappointing part was the owner's attitude, who seemed uninterested and quite rude. It's sad to see a pub with such a nice setting being wasted due to a clear lack of effort and poor customer service. I hope they can improve their hospitality and liven up the space.

I recently visited Joey’s Pub in Darjeeling and had a really pleasant experience. The place has a warm and welcoming vibe and is conveniently located on the 1st floor of the building opposite Rink Mall. The senior lady at the bar was extremely courteous and attentive. I was checking out their white wine, which wasn’t chilled at that moment, but she immediately took the initiative to get it chilled for me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay long enough to try it this time, but I’ll definitely be back on my next visit to enjoy it properly. Overall, a very nice and friendly spot — perfect for relaxing after exploring the town. Highly recommended! 🍷

St. Paul's School, located near Jalapahar in Darjeeling, offers a unique paragliding experience with flights launching from the school and landing at Lebong Ground. The breathtaking aerial views encompass the town, tea gardens, and mountain peaks. Established in 1823 to cater to the British and Anglo-Indian communities in Calcutta, this historic institution moved to Darjeeling in 1863.
Darjeeling is steeped in history and one of the most historic properties in this beautiful town is the iconic St Paul’s Darjeeling. The idea for an #AngloIndian school was conceived way back in 1823, yes 200 years ago, to meet the needs of the British and Anglo-Indian communities in Calcutta. The school was originally set up in the city of joy itself on Park Street. It moved to #Darjeeling in 1863 to an estate purchased for a ₹45,000 roughly about $550. Later it expanded and moved to #JalPahar where it now stands, strong and stately. Today, number 1 in Bengal and among the leading schools in india, it is home to over 750 students from all over the world.

It is known as "Eton of the East" because it is thought to follow the similar cultural and traditional values of Eton College. St. Paul's is one of the oldest public schools in Asia. Entrance tests for admission are held every September. The school follows the ICSE curriculum until class 10 and the ISC curriculum for classes 11 and 12.

One of the oldest school in Darjeeling with nice architecture and large campus. Can’t comment much on the education system as I am not an alumni or not even remotely related to one, however I have heard good things about the school. It has been shooting location for a lot of Bollywood movies too. I was there to explore the campus. Loved the architecture, the church and the large trees!

It's the best school in the continent. This school has a glorious past that superseded it's beauty. The nature and scenic view of this school is breathtaking. It's situated at the top of the Jalapahar in Darjeeling district. Students from each corner of the country as well as from abroad come here for study. The education system and the disciplined life they give builds a child's future. The infrastructure is very nice as seems like a British castle and the shape of the buildings is very nice to watch. When you are in Darjeeling, must pay a visit at St Paul's school.

It's a school but in that film it was shown as a college. It remains close during winter time from December to 1st week of February. Before father were there and they use to teach the students. But now smart teachers are there. School us quite costly. Most of the students here are from outside states like Delhi , Mumbai , Kolkata etc...the local students of Darjeeling are very less.
