Kathmandu Durbar Square is a captivating landmark nestled in the heart of old Kathmandu, specifically at Basantapur. This ancient royal complex showcases an impressive array of palaces, temples, and courtyards that date back to the Malla period. Visitors are greeted by iconic structures such as the Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace, which served as the seat of royalty, and Kumari Ghar, home to the Living Goddess.
Basantapur Durbar Square is one of the most famous and must-visit places in Kathmandu. I went there last weekend, and honestly, it’s way more beautiful than I expected. The moment you enter, you can feel the old-time vibes — the palaces, temples, and carved wooden windows show off Nepal’s amazing history and culture. Walking around, you’ll notice every corner has something interesting, from small shrines to huge statues. The place is always full of life. There are tourists taking photos, locals hanging out, street performers doing small shows, and tiny shops selling handicrafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. I spent some time just sitting on the steps, sipping tea, and watching people go by — it was surprisingly relaxing. The sunset view is magical. The golden light hits the old buildings and makes the whole square look like a painting. I also tried some street food nearby — momo and chatpate — while exploring, which made the visit even better. The vibe is lively but not overwhelming, and you can easily spend 2–3 hours just walking, clicking photos, and enjoying the atmosphere. If you are in Kathmandu, you can’t miss Basantapur Durbar Square. It’s a perfect mix of history, culture, and fun, and every visit leaves you wanting to come back again!

Visiting Kathmandu Durbar Square was a truly unforgettable experience. The place is filled with history, culture, and stunning traditional architecture. Walking through the ancient temples, courtyards, and palaces made me feel connected to Nepal’s rich heritage. The atmosphere was lively, with locals, visitors, and street vendors adding to the charm. It’s a perfect spot to explore the beauty of old Kathmandu and appreciate the craftsmanship of the past.
Rai L — Google review
Kathmandu Durbar Square is a living reminder of Nepal’s rich royal past. As you walk through the narrow, vibrant lanes to reach this square, you’ll be transported to a different era. You’ll feel the sense of antiquity as soon as you enter. The palaces, temples, and carved woodwork showcase Nepal’s amazing history and culture. The first thing that strikes you is the stunning architecture. The square is a collection of temples, shrines, courtyards, and palaces. At its core is the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, which was once the residence of the kings of Kathmandu. Although much of it is now used as a museum. Another attraction is the Kumari Ghar—the abode of the living goddess Kumari, where a young girl is worshipped as the embodiment of divine power. Another attraction is the Taleju Temple, the tallest structure in the square. Although only Hindus can enter. Nearby is a huge statue of Kalbhairav, a fearsome form of Lord Shiva. Even today, devotees come here to pray. Although several temples were damaged in the 2015 earthquake, craftsmen are still rebuilding the temples as perfectly as possible. If you are visiting Kathmandu, then Kathmandu Durbar Square should not be missed. It is a perfect blend of history and culture. Whether you are a history buff, a photographer, a culture lover, or just a curious traveler, Kathmandu Durbar Square has something for everyone.
Bhaskar M — Google review
A very beautiful place. It's rich in Nepal's modern and past history. I highly recommend hiring a guide; they'll tell you about each temple and statue. It'll take about an hour or a little more to see all the temples and listen to the history. I was accompanied by a guide named Uddab, who speaks excellent English and has a very engaging story.
Oleksandr M — Google review
Vibrant industry see when you are in Kathmandu even for a couple of hours! If you would like to enjoy the view of the entire square, just walk up to one of the many roop top cafés and restaurants overlooking Durbar Square!
Stamatios T — Google review
What a fascinating place. Went by night and again by day. Spent nearly 4 hours exploring the square. Recommend the museum albeit small. Several structures damaged by the 2015 earthquake are now open to the public but the scars are still very visible. Also recommend the small baoli/water catchment near by.
Rama T — Google review
An Unesco world heritage site, and must visit in Kathmandu. It's not far from the Thamel area. Very lively place, full with locals and tourist.

Kathmandu Durbar Square is a beautiful place full of history and traditional architecture. It’s definitely worth a visit. If you go after 5 PM, there’s no ticket required, which makes the experience even better. A great spot to explore and take photos!

Nestled along the serene banks of the Bagmati River, Pashupatinath Temple stands as a revered symbol of Hindu spirituality and culture. This iconic temple, rebuilt in the 15th century, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features stunning pagoda-style architecture adorned with gilt roofing and intricately carved silver doors. As one of the holiest sites for Hindus worldwide, it attracts countless pilgrims, especially during significant festivals like Shivaratri.
A Sacred and Soulful Place – Pashupatinath Temple Pashupatinath Temple is truly a holy and spiritual place, especially for us Nepalese. As a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, this temple holds a very special place in my heart. I make it a point to visit every year, whenever I get the chance. The atmosphere is peaceful yet powerful, and it carries deep meaning for every Hindu who visits. The ancient architecture, the sacred river, the chants, and the overall energy make this temple not just a religious site, but a place where you feel spiritually connected. It’s a blessing to have such a divine place in Nepal.
Sanjaya S — Google review
Pashupatinath Temple is one of Kathmandu’s most sacred and serene places. The moment you step inside the temple complex, you feel a deep sense of spirituality. The golden-roofed temple, traditional wood carvings, and the holy Bagmati River create a powerful and peaceful atmosphere. The temple area is well-maintained, and despite the crowd, the energy of devotion feels uplifting. The evening Bagmati Aarati is the highlight — calming, divine, and a must-experience for every visitor. Overall, Pashupatinath Temple offers a perfect blend of culture, history, and spirituality. A highly recommended place for anyone looking for peace and blessings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I recently visited Pashupatinath Temple with my wife and child, and it was a truly divine experience. The temple’s spiritual energy is beyond words — peaceful, powerful, and full of devotion. Watching the evening aarti together by the Bagmati River filled our hearts with calm and gratitude. The chants, incense, and sacred atmosphere made us feel deeply connected to Lord Shiva. A place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. 🙏🕉️

Very nice temple of lord shiva. Vibe is also very positive. Temple area is very vast and clean. From main gate to temple you will have to walk more. There is also time for temple to open so please see to it before reaching there or you will have to wait. At the backside of the temple, there is a river where dead peoples rituals is done.
Sandeep B — Google review
This is a must do in Kathmandu. A large temple complex on the banks of the river. What is incredible is that you get to see locals cremating family members on the banks of the river in traditional Hindu style; both moving and fascinating. You are allowed to take photos and this is a daily event. It costs 1000 NRP to enter the temple for foreigners. You will probably be approached by a guide, which I would recommend, but agree a price up front. We paid 20 USD, but you can pay in NPR.
Robert F — Google review
A must visit in Kathmandu. It's is a large temple complex that offer funeral and praying ceremony. Ticket is around 1000rs but make sure you have stamina to walk and climb around.

Pashupatinath Temple is a really special place with a strong spiritual vibe. The architecture and the whole atmosphere feel calm and meaningful. Yes, it gets very crowded, but that also shows how important the place is for people. Even with the rush, the experience feels unique and worth it. A must-visit spot if you're in Nepal.

Garden
Nestled on the edge of the bustling Thamel district, the Garden of Dreams is a serene escape that transports you back to 1920. Originally designed for field marshal Kaiser Shumsher in an elegant English Edwardian style, this enchanting garden features six charming pavilions, tranquil fountains, and beautifully landscaped grounds adorned with urns and birdhouses. After falling into disrepair post-1964, it underwent a stunning restoration between 2000 and 2007 with support from Austria.
f you’re in Kathmandu and looking for a little break from the hustle and bustle, the Garden of Dreams is basically the city’s answer to a mini paradise. It’s a beautifully maintained garden with lush greenery, charming fountains, and enough tranquility to make you forget you're in the middle of a vibrant city. Seriously, it's like stepping into a different world where the sound of traffic is replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves. Yes, you do have to pay an entrance fee, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. For what you get – a serene escape, clean spaces, and a well-maintained garden – it's a small price to pay. Plus, the extra fee is totally justified by the delightful experience of being able to kick back and enjoy the surroundings without the usual Kathmandu chaos. The garden also has a café where you can grab a drink or bite to eat. Now, fair warning, it's on the pricier side (for Kathmandu standards), but I guess you’re paying for the peaceful vibes and the fact that you're sitting in the only place that feels this calm and relaxed in the city. Still, it’s a lovely spot to sip on something cool or enjoy a snack. For those looking for a productive escape, this could be the perfect place to study or read a book – it's quiet enough to concentrate, and the surrounding beauty might just inspire you. It’s a good spot for both relaxing and getting some serious work done. All in all, a hidden gem in Kathmandu that’s definitely worth checking out!
Niels D — Google review
Gardens of Dreams is a beautiful and peaceful place with lovely gardens and a relaxing atmosphere. The greenery and fountains make it a perfect spot for photography and unwinding. However, I found the staff to be quite rude, which was disappointing. Despite that, the garden itself is well-maintained and definitely worth a visit for anyone who loves nature and tranquility.
Celta C — Google review
“Gardens of Dream” is a beautifully crafted experience that blends atmosphere, imagination, and serenity. Whether you’re exploring its lush landscapes or following its gentle narrative, the world feels immersive and thoughtfully designed. The visuals are rich and calming, and the overall tone encourages reflection and curiosity. While its pace may feel slow for those seeking action, it excels at delivering a soothing, dream-like escape. A lovely choice for anyone who enjoys tranquil, aesthetically driven winderful experiences.
Devansi A — Google review
The Garden of Dreams Its beauty is unmatched, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. it's a convenient retreat for anyone seeking solace amidst nature's splendor. The tranquil ambiance, coupled with its fascinating historic background, adds depth to the experience, making it not just a garden but a journey through time. this garden caters to all. Highly recommended for couples, families, and solo travelers . Don't miss dreams of garden ♥️❤️😍😃
Shanta W — Google review
A walled garden on a busy street, very lovely with fountains and ponds flower beds and even a maze. For me a perfect spot to enjoy a quite morning on a rainy day .. coffee shop was a bonus
Vanessa S — Google review
Ambiance is nice, but it’s quite small for a park / garden for me. And it’s surrounded with buildings, so air isn’t really fresh but understood given that Kathmandu is really populated and polluted. Air is not too refreshing here. Wanted to get out to get some fresh air cause I felt suffocated in the room with no windows. They have a cafe and restaurant. Foods were not too good too, can’t taste the cheese in the pizza, so I asked for more grated cheese but still the same, it seems like the cheese has no taste at all. Their ceasar salad is good, but the carrot soup is kinda sweet. Would have been nicer if it’s pure carrot. I asked if we can ask for a food delivery but they did not allow it. Service is good but they could have served better.
Beverly V — Google review
The location is nice to spend some time with friends. There are coffee shops inside and it's alright, but I thought the garden itself would be much bigger.
Arian A — Google review
It’s was calm and peaceful garden, one cafe inside, but no activity. You can seat and relax. 400 NPR seems pretty high for this. Do not expect toilet paper in the washrooms 😜

Nestled not far from the vibrant streets of Thamel, the Narayanhiti Royal Palace stands as a testament to Nepal's regal history. Once the residence of monarchs, this stunning palace has transformed into a museum following a significant political upheaval. Visitors can marvel at its impressive architecture and explore an array of exquisite royal artifacts, including ornate furniture and captivating paintings that narrate tales of yesteryears.
Narayanhiti Palace Palace is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Kathmandu and interested in Nepal’s rich history. Once the royal palace of the Shah dynasty, it was turned into a public museum after the monarchy ended in 2008. The complex is well-preserved, giving a real glimpse into royal life. Inside, the lavish halls, elegant throne room, and preserved artifacts showcase the luxury and power of Nepal’s former kings. The audio guide (available for a small extra fee) is very informative and well worth it. Photography is not allowed inside, which can be disappointing for some, but it helps maintain the palace’s sanctity and historical value. The grounds outside are clean and peaceful with beautiful gardens and fountains — a great place to stroll and take pictures. Located in the heart of Kathmandu, it’s easy to reach by taxi or even on foot from Thamel. Entry fees are affordable for Nepali visitors, though a bit higher for foreigners. Plan at least 1-2 hours to explore properly. Overall, Narayanhiti Palace Museum is a fascinating stop for travelers looking to understand Nepal’s royal heritage and political transformation.
Reezon S — Google review
Have you seen these parts of the former royal palace? Of course, everyone says, "Wow, nice place." But no one sees these integral parts of the museum. Let's have a look at some of the pictures that remind us of an abandoned place of MAHARAJAS. This is an underrated or hidden truth in the heart of Kathmandu City. We need to talk about this side as well. That's why it's three stars only.
Ramesh B — Google review
I recently visited the Narayan Hiti Museum and was absolutely fascinated by the rich history and grandeur preserved within these palace walls. The museum beautifully showcases the legacy of Nepal’s monarchy, offering a rare and intimate look into the royal lifestyle. From royal reception halls to the King’s private chambers, every room tells a story. What truly struck me was the solemn atmosphere around the tragic Royal Massacre site—preserved exactly as it was. It felt surreal and emotional. I’ve also shared some photos, opening hours, and ticket fees info to help fellow travelers plan better. Highlights: • Intricate architecture & vintage interiors • Detailed exhibits about the monarchy • Well-maintained and peaceful • Great place for history lovers and curious explorers Highly recommend setting aside at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the full experience. This place is not just a museum—it’s a journey through Nepal’s modern history.
Nabin P — Google review
It is very fascinating place to visit. It has very hidden history of royal family and their history. We must visit. Only problem is there is nothing accessible for wheelchair in side the museum but out side gardens are very nice. There is not allowed to take the photo. I recommend you to visit once.
Moti — Google review
A beautiful palace left as it was under the royal family. The pictures of visiting Heads of State are very interesting. Very poignant when you go through the personal residence and garden of King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, and their three children. No mobiles allowed in the Palace, and obviously, no pictures can be taken.
Mala — Google review
Narayanhiti Palace Museum is one of Kathmandu’s most fascinating historical sites. Once the royal residence of Nepal’s kings, it now stands as a museum that offers a deep insight into the country’s monarchy and political transformation. The palace’s architecture beautifully blends traditional Nepali design with modern elements, and visitors can explore lavish halls, reception rooms, and personal quarters preserved from the royal era. The museum also presents detailed exhibits about Nepal’s royal history, including the tragic 2001 royal massacre. Though photography is restricted inside, the experience feels authentic and reflective. Located near Thamel, it’s easy to reach and well worth a couple of hours for anyone interested in Nepal’s rich past. ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 — A must-visit for history lovers and anyone curious about Nepal’s royal heritage.
Parneel S — Google review
The Narayanhiti Palace Museum in Kathmandu is a fascinating place that offers a unique glimpse into Nepal’s royal past and political history. Once the residence of Nepal’s Shah monarchy, the palace was converted into a museum after the monarchy was abolished in 2008. The palace’s architecture beautifully blends Western and traditional Nepali styles, with spacious courtyards, elegant gardens, and intricate woodwork. Inside, the museum houses 52 rooms, each named after a district of Nepal, showcasing royal chambers, meeting rooms, and ceremonial halls. The exhibits include portraits, royal artifacts, gifts from foreign dignitaries, and detailed accounts of significant events, including the tragic 2001 royal massacre. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained exhibits and the informative guided tours, which provide deep insights into the country’s transition from monarchy to republic. However, photography is not allowed inside to protect the artifacts, and all personal items must be left at the entrance. The museum is conveniently located in central Kathmandu and is accessible to tourists interested in history and culture. It is open most days except Wednesdays, and it’s advisable to allocate 1.5 to 2 hours for a thorough visit. Overall, the Narayanhiti Palace Museum is a must-visit for those wanting to understand Nepal’s rich history and royal heritage. It offers an educational and moving experience that connects visitors to Nepal’s past in a meaningful way.

Nestled atop the serene Kopan Hills, just a short drive from Kathmandu's bustling center, lies the enchanting Kopan Monastery. This Tibetan Buddhist sanctuary is not only a place of worship but also a vibrant hub for those seeking to deepen their understanding of meditation and Buddhist teachings. With its roots tracing back to the late 1960s, it was established by pioneers dedicated to preserving Mahayana Buddhism.
Kopan Monastery is a hidden gem of peace and spirituality in Kathmandu! 🏯✨ Perched on a hilltop, this beautiful Buddhist monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views of the valley, making it a perfect place for meditation, reflection, and learning. The serene atmosphere, combined with the sound of chanting monks and fluttering prayer flags, creates an unforgettable spiritual experience. Visitors can join meditation sessions, Buddhist teachings, or simply explore the monastery grounds, which are filled with stunning Tibetan architecture and sacred stupas. The monks here are welcoming, and the peaceful surroundings make it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you're seeking inner peace, Buddhist wisdom, or just a beautiful place to relax, Kopan Monastery is a must-visit destination! Highly recommended for spiritual seekers, meditation lovers, and travelers looking for tranquility! 🙏🕉️✨
SHEIKH S — Google review
I took a 10-day course and it was life-changing. Very good teachings and meditations. All Monks are very nice and welcoming (the opposite is almost impossible when it comes to Monks anyway!). You quickly feel at home at the Monastery. The peacefulness and the view of the city and mountains make it even more special. The Monastery also has a restaurant/coffee shop, a convenience store, and a library you can go to during your breaks. I never thought I'd sleep well in a dormitory but I did, and I think it actually makes the experience better to be with other people in your room in this case. I've met people from all around the world, and everyone has their own special reason as to why they are attending the course. *ADVICE*: The food is very tasty and you can eat as much as you want. But a lot of us were sick (from above or from down there, if you get what I mean) while we were over there. I'm not sure why; it's tough to pinpoint one thing, but my guess is that, even though they provide us as much filtered water as we want to drink, they may be using tap water to cook. Again, I'm not sure. Also, there was barely any protein in any meal we ate the whole time (mainly carbs (bread, noodles, potatoes) and veggies), so your body lacks the energy to fight whatever foreign bacteria you're trying to digest. So my tip would be: bring some medicine for this just in case and bring something with protein to eat on the side. There is a doctor on-site but he might not have all the medicine you need or want. But don't let this discourage you from going if you can; just be well-prepared. This is still a wonderful experience.

Kopan Monastery – a place that stays with you Kopan is a beautiful, peaceful and well-kept monastery, but it’s more than the surroundings that make an impression. For me, this is one of the few places in Kathmandu where the silence reaches as deep as the view. I feel a personal connection to this place in my own Buddhist search. There is an authenticity here that is difficult to put into words – you feel it in the quiet, in the teachings, and in the people who live and study here. Kopan is not just worth visiting. It’s a place that calls you back.
Jeppe J — Google review
My favorite spiritual place in Kathmandu is perfect for meditation and immersing myself in the vibrant atmosphere of Buddhism and the presence of monks. Although I couldn't attend the courses during my stay, I fully embraced the experience and found it to be incredibly fulfilling.

We reached around 0350 pm and were lucky to be allowed inside by the security guard with condition that we will return in 15 min. What a lovely place !!! As you get inside the prayer room one can experience the power of silence as the place inside is peaceful and silent. It’s advisable to sit inside closing your eyes for atleast 10 min to experience the power of meditation which is induced by the silent atmosphere prevailing there. From outside you can have a nice panoramic view of the city of Kathmandu which is lovely site. They have a small cafeteria there and washrooms are also available A must place to visit for all tourists

I wanted to explore Kopan Monastery on the third day of travel but then cab drivers I interacted with suggested that it wouldn't be a nice idea to visit this monastery as roads were not clear. But I still wanted to visit it once before coming back to India as I read great reviews of this place and also witnessed some amazing scenery. So, on the last day in Nepal, I finally visited this monastery and clicked lots of pictures. I talked to one monk there who has been residing in the monastery for 22 years and he has been there since his childhood. I asked him 'Do you practice celibacy?" to which he replied, "Yes, I do". While walking from pillar to post in the monastery I could feel that he was living in heaven and made the right choice for this life.

Review is based on the 7day introduction to Buddhism and Meditation. The course exceeded my expectations, this is because I left 'expectations' at the door. Coming in with an open mind, I learnt a lot and how to apply but also really thoughtful in decisions I make on a daily basis. The teachers are great (Joann especially) and some meditation guides. Don't expect (silent) mindful meditation, it's more thinking which I found hard but a good test. A few suggestions to anyone thinking to do the same (& for Kopan): 1) Cost transparency would be great from Kopan. Knowing the room prices on the website would be good. 2) You don't need a pocket knife, flash light (as they suggest)- plenty of light and tools. 3) The cafe is oddly very expensive, 300 for a coffee with milk! Some people have a budget, so literally outside the gate there is a cafe where you can get the same and rooftop for half the price. 4) Fans in the room would help, a better sleep helps with better meditation. 5) DO bring mosquito spray, this way you don't kill them but can avoid being bitten all night! 6) Less talking from the meditation guides would help with focus! Otherwise, I'd highly recommend this experience for anyone with and willing open mind.

The National Museum of Nepal in Kathmandu is a treasure trove of the country’s rich history and culture. It features an impressive collection of artifacts, including ancient weapons, coins, and religious art. While some exhibits could benefit from better labeling, the overall experience is educational and inspiring. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in Nepal’s diverse cultural legacy

I’m not quite sure what to make of this museum. One gallery features exhibitions of wood, bronze, and stone. Another is devoted entirely to Buddha, while the third is an odd mix: displays of Nepalese people and tribes, castes, dolls, various taxidermied animals, funny mirrors, large portraits of kings, and medieval weapons like swords and shields. Museums aren’t typically places I choose to visit, but since I had plenty of time in Kathmandu, I went—reluctantly. Entry cost NPR 150, with an additional NPR 150 if you want to use a camera. Visit only if you’re really bored and have nothing else planned.

Visited on a Sunday while in Kathmandu We visited on a Sunday morning and found the National Museum pleasantly quiet, with only a few school groups passing through. The museum is spread across several buildings — one showcasing religious art and sculpture, another focused on Nepal’s natural history (animals, fossils, and more), a section displaying historical and modern currency, and another dedicated to weapons collected by former rulers, along with exhibits highlighting the country’s diverse ethnic groups. I had expected more about Nepal’s broader historical narrative — topics such as the monarchy and political history, the war with Tibet, the civil war, national economics, and the history of Himalayan climbing. I was especially surprised that Tenzing Norgay and other notable Nepali climbers or athletes weren’t featured. It’s a beautiful spot with a peaceful courtyard and well-kept grounds. I’d recommend it to anyone interested in the specific collections on display, but if you’re hoping for a deeper look at Nepal’s national history, you may leave wanting more

It's a must visit when you're in Kathmandu. I loved the sculptures of Indian gods and goddesses. There is so much to learn about the history, culture and geography of Nepal here. The staff is friendly and guides you well. I liked how well they kept the glasses, sculptures and all objects in the museum super clean as well. The entire place looks beautiful. They also provide free locker service for things you cannot carry inside the museum. I feel if you're visiting a country, you should visit their national museum. And this museum is worth visiting.

National Museum is located at the base of Swayambhu, kathmandu just opposite to Military museum. It is the first Nepalese museum. This museum comprises various buildings, gardens, and open spaces within its premises. Its primary function is to preserve and exhibit rare and valuable art treasures. The monumental building housing the Historical Museum was built by Bhimsen Thapa, prime minister of Nepal in the 18th century. Riches of Nepal's biodiversity are exhibited in these chambers — mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, butterflies and insects. Pelt, horn or endo-skeletons of tiger, leopard, red panda, flying squirrel, rhinoceros, whale, colourful plumage of birds may be cited. Also, newly just a building has been renovated after the earthquake in Nepal. You will find it worth visiting.

Today, we visited Monkey Temple Restaurant, located at Chhakdole Danda, offering a stunning panoramic view of Kathmandu Valley. The ambience is inviting, and the staff is incredibly friendly, making the overall experience enjoyable. The food is good, though the pricing is slightly higher compared to similar restaurants—something the owner might consider revising. However, what makes this place truly unique is the opportunity to feed the eagles! If you’re looking for a spot with great views and a little adventure, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Though the view and the ambience of the Restaurant is great the food quality didn’t justify the hefty price. We asked if we will get bread with soup and alas we were given a single plain toast bread (not toasted ). Big disappointment.

The service was not to the point. They kept forgetting our orders, we had to remind them time and again about our orders, The wait time was way very long, when the food was finally served, it was served cold and didn’t meet the expectations! The Portion sizes were very less compared to the pricing. The only good thing about this place was the top view of the city and night lights. Overall, bad experience!

Visited this restro after my friend’s recommendation. Their chicken wings and mustang aloo were good but the pizza was the worst I ever had. It was tasteless. They missed our order and after waiting for an hour no response. So we had to cancel the order and checkout. The view of the valley is great but this doesn’t justify their price and food service they provide. The servers need better training to ask everytime if the guests liked food or not and not completely ignore guests when they ask for basic things like water.

Dharahara Tower holds great historical and cultural significance in Nepal. Once the tallest building in the country, it now stands as an iconic view tower and a major landmark in Kathmandu. The newly rebuilt structure not only offers panoramic views of the city but has also become a popular attraction, generating significant revenue for the government. A must-visit spot for anyone interested in Nepal’s history, architecture, and urban transformation.

Dharahara Tower, also known as Bhimsen Tower, is one of Kathmandu’s most iconic landmarks, standing as a symbol of resilience and historical pride. Reconstructed after the devastating 2015 earthquake, the new Dharahara pays homage to the original 19th century structure while embracing modern safety and design features. Located in the heart of the city, it now serves not just as a monument, but as a cultural and recreational hub for locals and tourists alike. The tower offers a panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley from its observation deck, accessible via elevators or stairs. The view from the top is truly breathtaking perfect for photography or simply taking in the vast cityscape framed by distant hills. The premises also include a museum, a park, a fountain, and food courts, making it a great spot for family visits or solo exploration. Security and cleanliness are well-maintained, and the site feels safe and welcoming. Entry tickets are reasonably priced, with discounts for Nepali citizens. While some may find the crowds a bit overwhelming on weekends or holidays, early mornings offer a more peaceful experience. Overall, Dharahara Tower is a must-visit attraction in Kathmandu a place where history, culture, and modernity come together beautifully.

Visiting Dharahara was a truly memorable experience for me. I had always seen pictures and heard stories about the original tower before it was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake. So, when I finally visited the newly rebuilt Dharahara, I felt a deep connection with the history and spirit of Kathmandu. The structure is beautifully restored, and it proudly stands tall in the middle of the busy city. As I walked around the area, I could see how much effort has been put into keeping its original charm while adding modern touches. The park surrounding it is clean and well-maintained, offering a peaceful place to relax and take photos. The best part for me was going up to the top. The view from above is just amazing—you can see the whole Kathmandu Valley, including old temples, rooftops, and distant hills. It really makes you feel how unique this city is. There is also a museum inside that shares the history of Dharahara and its importance to Nepal. Whether you are a tourist or a local, I highly recommend visiting Dharahara. It's not just a monument—it’s a symbol of Nepal’s strength and hope. Definitely worth the time and ticket!

One of the very important historical sites of Kathmandu valley that still preserves our rich ancient and medieval art, culture, history and diverse Buddhist cultural practices. This site has its significance not only in the Buddhist traditions and mythology but also in the evolution of the valley's traditions that dates back to many centuries.

Very few people know about this place. The area is crowded and a business hub in central Kathmandu. During Seto Machhindranath Jatra, the statue is carried on a Rath and the rath jatra is moved around the city area. Inside is a well managed area. Tourists visit this place with their guides. It's building and the temple which were damaged by the earthquake are under renovation. So it is suggested to visit with caution.

There is a wide array of table games, some weird Japanese Chinese game with a screen in the table where you use a joystick to shoot fish, and a few slots. For slots you exchange Indian or Nepalese currency for 8 rupee tokens to put into the slots. We played on a standard 777 bar bar bar type slot from Harrahs from the likely 70s Era. When you are done, you can exchange a minimum of 100 tokens back to the cashier to receive Nepalese bills. There are no photos or video allowed in the casino and the employees hover over your shoulder. The place on a Sunday afternoon was empty but I had some hot tea, a bit of fun on the slots, and decent bathrooms when needed. There were digital slot machines with a 1000 token minimum that I wish had more playability.

Rani Pokhari, also known as Queen's Pond, is a historic man-made pond situated in the center of Kathmandu, Nepal. It was constructed by King Pratap Malla in 1670 to commemorate his queen who was grieving the loss of her son. The site features a large stone elephant statue representing Pratap Malla and his two sons, as well as the Balgopaleshwor Temple standing above the pond.
I do not know who built this historical landmark. But it holds significant historical values. It is now open to the public for morning walks and jogging. Inside this place, one side pond water and the other side there are many green plants and trees which give you fresh air in the middle of the city, in the jungle of concrete. Do visit this place in the morning for morning walks and jogging.

A famous landmark in the heart of Kathmandu was made by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century. It was made to console his queen (Rani in Nepali) after his son's death. This pond has historical, cultural, and religious importance. In the center of the pond, there is a temple dedicated to the god Shiva, which only opens once a year. That is during the Deepawali in a day called Bhaitika. The person who doesn't have a sister comes here as a Bhai to take Tika. Lies between Rant Park, and Jamal have famous institutions like Darbar High School and Trichandra College in the front and back This pond has now been restored or renovated and looks very nice.

The recently restored site looks absolutely beautiful — the white Balgopaleshwar Temple standing gracefully at the center of the pond gives the whole area a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Positive aspects Cultural and historical significance: Built by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century to console his queen, the pond is a major landmark with deep religious and cultural importance. Peaceful retreat: Many visitors find the atmosphere serene and peaceful, ideal for walks, runs, and taking photos, especially in the newly renovated state.

Rani Pokhari (Queen Pond) has been recently renovated after devastation by Gorkha Earthquake 2015. It was construct more than 300 years ago by Pratap Malla, king of Kathmandu. Present style of the temple at the middle of the pond is 'Sikhar Style', the original style when first constructed. The pond and all the structure is splendid. See the architectures of Kathmandu 300 years ago, it can match any heritage of the world. The temple is open only one day (Bhai Teeka, Deepawali) of the year and people who do not have sister go to the temple to have Teeka.

Nestled in the vibrant Kathmandu Durbar Square, Jagannath Temple stands as a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the rich tapestry of Nepalese culture. The Jagannath Temple is a beautiful and peaceful place tucked within Durbar Square. The architecture is impressive, and I love how it's a bit quieter compared to the other temples around. The carvings on the temple are also fascinating, especially the intricate details. It’s a great place to take a break and just enjoy the calm atmosphere. I was amazed at how much history is packed into this small temple. It’s dedicated to Lord Jagannath, and the design of the temple is really traditional. I spent some time here learning about its significance and just soaking in the surroundings. It’s a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle of the square. Jagannath Temple is definitely one of those places that you don’t want to miss when visiting Durbar Square. It’s not as crowded as other sites, and the temple itself is beautifully carved. It’s a great place to step away from the crowds, observe the rituals, and enjoy some peace.

Very interesting place. It's great for tourists to learn about the reincarnation of a deity. Kumari will come or for 7 seconds inside here, and NO photos are allowed. You stand around a small area and wait for the signal from the 1st floor. This is a must-visit place for anyone coming to Kathmandu.

The Missus wanted to see the “living goddess “ so we went. We had to pay for the pass to the complete area even though we had already been there and seen everything except for the young goddess. We arrived as she was giving an appearance. They don’t let anyone in during this time so we had to wait about 40 minutes before she made her next appearance. There’s absolutely no pictures of her allowed to be taken. She looks like a young preteen who is bored with the routine. She looked around at us for a couple of minutes with no expression on her face then left the upper window. There were very many people in attendance to see her. Everyone has to be absolutely quiet. There was a class of students that came in while we were there, and they were very well behaved.

Beautiful building. But the highlight is definitely seeing the living goddess. Ask at the information desks at what time you could see her. It’s quite beautiful as everybody goes silent and she appears and look at the crowd. Just a couple of minutes but it is worth the experience. Kumari Ghar, also known as the House of the Living Goddess, is a small but significant palace located in Kathmandu Durbar Square, Nepal. This ornate, three-story structure is the residence of the Kumari, a young girl believed to be the living embodiment of the Hindu goddess Taleju. The tradition of the Kumari, a centuries-old practice, is deeply rooted in Nepalese culture, where the chosen girl, usually from the Newar Shakya caste, is worshipped as a goddess until she reaches puberty. The Kumari Ghar itself is a striking example of traditional Newari architecture, with its intricately carved wooden windows and doors, and a richly decorated courtyard. The building was constructed in 1757 by King Jaya Prakash Malla and has since been the residence of the Kumari. The most famous of the windows is the one from which the Kumari occasionally appears to give blessings to visitors and devotees, a rare and sacred moment for those who witness it. While the interior of Kumari Ghar is not accessible to the public, the exterior and the courtyard can be viewed by visitors. The living goddess is rarely seen, except during special religious festivals, such as Indra Jatra, when she is carried through the streets in a ceremonial procession. Despite the fascinating cultural significance of the Kumari Ghar, some visitors might find the experience less engaging due to the restricted access and the heavily touristic atmosphere around the Durbar Square area. Nonetheless, Kumari Ghar remains a unique and culturally rich site that offers a glimpse into one of Nepal's most intriguing traditions.

Whenever whoever visits Nepal, they should definitely visit this place and for the information (it's easier, you get whatever you need in information desk). Many jatras and festivals happens in this place. It has been recorded in UNESCO heritage site too. So feel it when you travel here. Many things are in reconstruction phase, hope to see it's beautiful version after the work is done. Once is not enough so visit frequently.

Going by its local name, the Kasthamandap in Kathmandu roughly translates as a wood-covered shelter. Three stories make up the temple's structure. This temple has held the status of a revered pagoda in the city from antiquity. Thousands of pilgrims travel to this Kathmandu attraction to venerate the famed Gorakhnath holy statue, which is housed in this sacred place. This temple's most notable characteristic is that it was originally constructed in the classic pagoda style. This tourist destination in Kathmandu is also well-known for other characteristics, such as the fact that the entire shrine was constructed from the wood of a single tree.

This building is on the outskirts of Durbar Square in a very busy area. The building is relatively simple and quite inconspicuous so anyone would be forgiven for not noticing it. That would be a shame though because it has about 1400 years of history as a public shelter. Its architecture showcases a harmonious blend of Newar and pagoda styles, featuring a towering three-tiered structure adorned with intricate wooden carvings and a gilded pinnacle . The temple holds immense religious significance, being accessible to the public only once a year during the Dashain festival, when devotees gather to pay homage to the goddess . Throughout the rest of the year, visitors can admire its external grandeur and the surrounding historical edifices of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legend speaks of the goddess Taleju appearing to King Mahendra Malla in a dream, instructing him to build the temple. This divine encounter underscores the temple's spiritual importance and its role in the cultural fabric of Kathmandu . A visit to Taleju Temple offers not only a glimpse into Nepal's architectural brilliance but also an opportunity to connect with the profound spiritual traditions that have shaped the nation's history.

The Taleju Temple is one of Hanuman Dhoka Darbar Square's oldest structures. A "great temple" was built in 1563, under Mahendra Malla's rule, according to ancient diaries (tyasaphus) (r. 1560-74). Four notable structures, including the Jagannath, Kotilingeswar Mahadev, and Mahendreswara temples, are known to have been constructed at Darbar Square under the reign of Mahendra Malla. The Malla period building spree was financed by the kingdom's efforts to issue Tibetan currency for export and increase trade with other Himalayan kingdoms. The temple's current design resembles a cosmic mandala. The main structure has three levels of roofing and is supported by a base with twelve steps that resembles Mount Meru's lower slopes. There are sixteen satellite shrines built as two-story Newar towers all around the sanctuary. Notably, the main structure's roofs are covered in gilt copper sheets and supported by wooden struts with carvings of many gods. The temple is accessed by four portals—one on each side—each of which has a true door and two false doors. With carved wooden colonnettes, toranas over the main doorways, and pointed blocks (bhailahkva) flanking the lower door jambs, each is elaborately articulated.

Taleju Bhawani Temple is located in Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu Darbar Square listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site which exhibit the Hindu culture and it opened only once a year for Hindu people on the Ocassion of Dashain festival. People belive that the temple was built in the shape of Yantra.

Ratna Park, also known as Sankadhar Udyan, is a charming urban oasis located in the heart of Kathmandu. Established in 1964 by King Mahendra and named after his second wife, Queen Ratna, this park features lush green gardens with lawns, flowerbeds, seating areas, and restrooms. Despite being a popular pick-up location for tourist buses heading to Pokhara, many visitors overlook its serene beauty.
There is space for walking and rest, rides for kids or teenage, Not bad indeed .

Ratna Park, located in the heart of Kathmandu, is a peaceful green space surrounded by the busy rhythm of the city. Despite being in an urban area, the park offers a refreshing touch of nature with its tall trees, colorful flowers, and well-kept gardens that provide calm and relaxation to visitors. Nearby, several historic temples add a spiritual charm to the surroundings, where the fragrance of incense and the soft sound of temple bells blend with the chirping of birds. Early mornings and evenings at Ratna Park are especially beautiful, as people come to meditate, walk, or simply enjoy the cool breeze and greenery. It serves as a perfect balance between nature and spirituality, offering a small but meaningful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Pond
Kamal Pokhari, located in Kathmandu, is a recently refurbished pond surrounded by trees. Despite its modest size, it offers a serene setting for activities such as reading or taking leisurely strolls along the pond walkway. The origins of this historic site are shrouded in mystery, with tales suggesting that it was frequented by the Malla kings for contemplation and reflection. Today, Kamal Pokhari serves as a convergence of history, wellness, and natural beauty.
Kamalpokhari is a peaceful spot in the city, known for its pond and a serene atmosphere that provides a good nesting place for birds. The trees around the area attract various species, making it a pleasant spot for birdwatchers. However, the pond, which is supposed to be a central feature, unfortunately lacks water and fish, which affects its charm. Additionally, while the surroundings are generally calm, one side of the walking area is quite narrow, making it difficult to walk comfortably. With some improvement in the maintenance of the pond and better walking space, Kamalpokhari could become a much better spot for relaxation and nature lovers.

It was the best experience ever. Now, it’s even more beautiful than when I was studying for my Bachelor’s at KIST College. Back then, it was our favorite place to hang out with college friends.
Nawaraj J — Google review
Situated in the heart of the city, this place offers a serene escape with its tranquil views and peaceful ambiance. One of its best features is that entry is completely free, making it accessible to everyone. There’s shaded seating where visitors can relax—perfect for cooling off on hot days or soaking up the sun during colder months. The pond itself adds to the calm atmosphere, inviting quiet reflection or casual gatherings. The area is well-maintained and clean, making it a pleasant spot for both everyday visits and special occasions. During Chhath Puja, devotees can even reserve a space for rituals, adding cultural richness to its charm. I wish there were more places in Kathmandu where people could escape to enjoy a calm atmosphere or simply reconnect with nature amidst the urban rush.

Nestled in the central Himalayas, Kathmandu Valley is a historic and spiritual treasure trove spread across 220 square miles. According to legend, the valley was made habitable by Bodhisattva Manjushri, allowing Buddhism to flourish. The Newas, believed to be the original inhabitants of the area since ancient times, have left their mark on the valley's cultural identity through their unique architecture and traditions.
charming valley of ancient towns, intricate temples, and royal palaces, the Kathmandu Valley has been inhabited since 300 BC. For centuries, the valley has been a place of pilgrimage for both Buddhists and Hindus. Absorbed into the Nepalese Gorkha kingdom in the 12th century, the Kathmandu Valley has nonetheless managed to preserve its many historical structures into the twenty-first century, through wars and natural disasters. Visiting the Kathmandu Valley was an unforgettable experience filled with history, culture, and natural beauty. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the energy of the valley—bustling streets, smiling locals, and a deep sense of spiritual richness that seems to linger in the air. The valley, surrounded by beautiful hills, offers a stunning view of traditional Nepalese life set against a backdrop of ancient temples and palaces. One of the highlights of my trip was exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), and the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan. Each site tells a unique story of Nepal’s rich cultural and religious heritage, and the intricate wood and stone carvings are simply awe-inspiring. The blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences throughout the valley creates a truly harmonious atmosphere. What I appreciated most was the warmth and hospitality of the people. Whether it was a shopkeeper in Thamel or a guide at a historical site, everyone was friendly and eager to share their culture. The food was another delightful part of the journey—especially the momos, dal bhat, and traditional Newari dishes that gave a true taste of Nepalese cuisine. Overall, the Kathmandu Valley is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, spirituality, and authentic cultural experiences. Despite the busy streets and occasional dust, the charm of the valley and the stories it holds make it a place worth visiting again and again. Highly recommended!

If you’re planning a trek in Nepal, I highly recommend Nepal Trekking Planner for their outstanding service and expertise. Thank you for an amazing experience! I want to thank the owner Dipak, my guide Gyeljen Sherpa and my porter Sonam Sherpa. Without them this amazing trek wouldn't be possible. I went on Everest Base Camp and climbed 2 peaks (Lobuche east and Island peak). The whole organisation was perfect, we had some problems with the weather and cancelled flights, but we were able to get to Surke with Jeeps and continue the trek. On the way back weather also wasn't any better, but Dipak was able to get me shared Helicopter to Kathmandu on time. So yeah, memories for life, and hope to try for a 7000+ peak soon.

We had an amazing experience with Nepal Trekking Planners. It’s organized from A-Z, the only thing you have to do is the effort to experience and enjoy. Everywhere I have traveled around the world, non of my trips was as good as organized as with Nepal Trekking Planner. Mr Dipak, the owner is always available for questions, and respons very quickly. His mission, is to make his client happy and bring work for his porters and guides. The three pass trek is the most beautiful experience I have done. Your more off the grid than the regular EBC which is very touristic. If your fit and like more adventure and be surrounded by nature, then 3 pass is for you. It takes you over 3 beautiful passes, in between the highest mountains of the world. We did the three pass trek with Kiran our guide and Sonam & Dorsje our porters. They took care of us, like we were family and be a real team. They checked in with us, asked our wishes and always open for a chat and feedback. Especially Kiran, he is a born guide and takes good care of his clients by heart. We won’t forget you guys, for sharing this lifetime experience with us. My advice, if you wanna do the 3 pass trek, ask for Kiran as he really takes good care of you, and besides being a guide. He is an amazing human who likes to show you the mountains and tells a lot of stories about them. Dherai dhanyabaad Franke, Nynke and Daniël

I had a great experience from contacting Dipak to arrange a trek at the last minute; to the excellent service and guide I received from Gyeljen Sherpa & my porter Pinju. They took the time to arrange a big trek during the new year transition period. All bookings went smoothly. I had a well-received pickup from the airport and all the guesthouses on my trek were good (despite it being a shoulder season). I highly recommend having Gyeljen Sherpa as your guide. His professionalism and focus on safety was impressive to me. He took great care of me and ensured my welfare was taken care of. This is my 2nd time coming to Nepal for a trek, so I had higher expectations from my trekking company and my guide; and they delivered well. My day tour in Kathmandu was exceptionally done by my guide Kedar. He is very well informed and possess great knowledge of the areas in Kathmandu. I enjoyed my Kathmandu day tour. Thank you guys!

Trekking Planner is a well organized & passionate company which can be trusted. The team leader Dipak provided a convenient service sending someone to pick me up and drop me off at Kathmandu International Airport when I arrived in & left Nepal, and round trip fly to Lukla Airport also for my trekking on EBC, Chal La Pass & Gokyo-Ri loop from 17 Oct to 4 Nov 2024. Trekking Planner set up a welcome dinner to let me have a chance to try the good local food & see local people’s show at a restaurant, and farewell dinner too after the trek completed, i was feeling so welcome as I am at home. Trekking Planner is still so nice to lend me a duffel bag, sleeping bag (can stands -15 to -20 degree Celsius) & crampons without any extra charge. Landed at Lukla airport at noon on 19 Oct and met my guide Pemba & porter Tenji to start the adventure, I am only one in this group with a guide and a porter as 3 people’s team, both of them are Sherpa. My guide Pemba is a very nice young guy and very knowledgeable as a professional & qualified guide for EBC trek. He arranged every day's trek route, 3 meals & lodgement, and explained the national park rules and tips to avoid high altitude sickness to me. He encouraged me and helped me carried my personal bag when I was not feeling good on the trek. And Pemba was very generous to prepare a fruit plate (sliced fresh apple) to me after my supper every day because he realized I lost my appetize much due to the high altitude; with his support & help my heart really felt warm and touched during this tough trek. My porter Tenji is a college student, he took his school vacation to do this porter job making a little bit more money for his tuition fees; he is a good boy, working hard we all know to carry a heavy duffel bag all the way up and down for 14 days is a not easy job. Both of Pemba and Tenji followed me all the way from Lukla airport to EBC, Chol La Pass and Gokyo Ri loop & and back to Lukla Airport on 1 Nov, they helped me to make my dream becoming true & achieve my goal successfully - getting the opportunity to see the wonderful landscape of Himalaya on the trek, standing on 5364 meters Everest Base Camp and on the top of 5545 meters Kala Pattar to see the beautiful sunset of Everest peak, it was absolutely amazing; and safely went thru Chol La Pass to Gokyo Lakes, and finally up to 5357 meters Gokyo Ri to see Everest peak again with different stunning view & other over 8000 meters mountain’s peaks. This trek is difficult and is a real challenge because of high altitude, I was so excited to complete my trek (EBC, Chol La Pass & Gokyo Ri loop), it is a great journey and is my life experience which I never forget. Again really appreciate my guide Pemba & porter Tenji to make my dream becoming true, I cannot successfully complete my trek without them.

A special thank-you goes to our experienced Sherpas. They accompanied and supported us throughout the entire four-week journey, guiding us with incredible calmness, strength, and expertise. I would also like to express my gratitude to the porters who carried our luggage for the entire duration of the trip. Their work is truly impressive and deserves the deepest respect. A heartfelt thank-you as well to the travel agency for making this exceptional journey possible.

The welcome dinner-experiencing the local food and culture- set the right tone. Dipak, owner of the company, was very patient and meticulously took care of a huge group of 20 of us. Our hiking crew we met at Lukla, were bunch of young individuals but yet very caring, experienced and knew how to take of our individual needs. They made sure we all had the right attitude to hike every day hyping us up with awesome music, fun, energy, good food and knowledge of the Himalayan terrain. I would like to give big shout out to our main guide- Avishek, assistant guides - Dikhshya, our only female guide crew- YAYYY!, Runjoon, Umesh, Thulai, FT- all of them went above and beyond taking care of us and making sure we had the best experience. Patan Museum, situated in the northernmost building complex of Patan Durbar Square, is housed in an 18th-century royal palace. Its purpose is to preserve and exhibit traditional religious art, culture, and iconography related to Hinduism and Buddhism. The museum features a stunning courtyard known as Keshav Narayan Chok, named after a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
A Journey Through Time in the Heart of Patan Visited last Saturday and wow—Patan Durbar Square truly feels like stepping into a living museum! Every brick, every carving tells a story. The Patan Museum was the highlight for me—beautifully curated, peaceful, and rich with Newari art and history. It’s a place where you don’t just see culture, you feel it. The intricate woodwork, ancient courtyards, and spiritual energy make it a must-visit for anyone who loves history, photography, or just wants a break from the modern chaos. Each part of the visit added a new layer to our understanding of the area's historical and cultural importance. The experience was well-organized, and we truly appreciated the effort put into ensuring that we learned as much as possible. It was more than just a visit—it was a learning journey that left us with a deeper appreciation for Nepal’s history and craftsmanship. Set within the historic Patan Durbar Square—a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lalitpur—the museum occupies the intricately restored Malla-era royal palace, built in 1734 and updated extensively after the 2015 earthquake . The architecture is a beautiful example of traditional Newar woodwork and design, with carved windows, ornate courtyards, and the recently opened Sundari Chowk featuring the 17th‑century royal bath, Tusha Hiti, complete with stone and gilt imagery of Hindu gods and Nāgas . Boasting over 1,100 artifacts, about 200 are on permanent display, including cast bronze sculptures and gilt copper repoussé works that reflect centuries of Hindu and Buddhist devotion and artistry . The collection spans from the medieval Malla period through later eras, offering both iconic statues and explanatory captions that connect graphics to meaning.

I visited the Patan Museum, and from the moment I entered, the atmosphere felt rich with history. Located in the old Malla royal palace, the architecture alone is worth the visit intricate wood carvings, traditional Newari brickwork, and serene courtyards that reflect centuries of craftsmanship. The restoration has been done with great care, preserving the authenticity while making the space easy to explore. The galleries display an impressive collection of artifacts, focusing on Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Bronze statues, gilt-copper repoussé works, and ancient religious iconography are arranged in a way that tells a clear story of Nepal’s spiritual and artistic heritage. Informative descriptions accompany each piece, offering context without overwhelming the visitor. Sundari Chowk, with its detailed woodwork and the historic royal bath, stands as a reminder of the palace’s grandeur. Every corner of the museum feels thoughtfully maintained, with a quiet, meditative atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling streets outside. Time moves slowly inside the museum. Courtyards open into shaded galleries, and each turn reveals another detail of craftsmanship or history. By the time I stepped back into Patan Durbar Square, it felt like I had experienced a preserved fragment of Nepal’s past in the heart of a living city.

Patan Museum is a famous museum in Lalitpur, Nepal, located inside the beautiful Patan Durbar Square. The museum is set in an old royal palace of the Malla kings and is one of the best places to learn about Nepali art and culture. It was officially opened in 1997 with support from Austria and today it is respected as one of the finest museums in South Asia. The museum mainly shows art related to Hinduism and Buddhism. Visitors can see old statues made of bronze, copper, and wood, along with many religious objects. Each display has clear explanations that help people understand the history and meaning behind the artwork. This makes the museum very educational for both students and tourists. The building of the museum itself is also very special. The traditional Newar-style architecture, with carved wooden windows, brick walls, and open courtyards, makes the museum look like a piece of art. There is also a peaceful garden and a small café where visitors can relax. Patan Museum is not only a place to see beautiful objects but also a place to connect with Nepal’s past. It is an important destination for anyone who wants to explore the country’s rich culture and traditions.

Embracing the concept of slow dining, meals at Krishnarpan range from six to 22 courses, providing guests with an immersive culinary experience.
We had an amazing time at this Nepalese restaurant and wanted to thank the entire team for such a memorable evening. It was our first time trying authentic Nepalese cuisine, and we were absolutely blown away by the flavors and variety of the 6 dishes. Every bite was a discovery — rich in spices, perfectly balanced, and full of heart. The staff was warm and welcoming, happy to explain the dishes and share a bit about Nepalese food culture. The ambiance added to the experience, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel like we were on a journey far from home. Thank you for introducing us to such a beautiful and delicious part of your country.

A lovely place and certainly not to be missed if you want an authentic Nepali culinary experience. We ordered a 6-course meal and it was sumptuous, filling and exotic. Our hostess, Yuma, would explain every course to us and her team of servers served us with love and care. We were a noisy group of 11 with lots of curiosity and questions. We all came out amazed at the entire experience.
Alok J — Google review
The atmosphere is stunning, with a warm, traditional vibe that makes a great impression. The menu is well thought out and clearly aims to showcase Nepali cuisine. Unfortunately, the service didn’t live up to the rest of the experience. From the beginning, things felt rushed and impersonal, which is disappointing for a place that’s meant to be immersive. At times, food was served or described when one of us wasn’t even at the table, which felt careless. Worse, parts of the main course came out cold, including the rice and lentil soup—something you wouldn’t expect at this level and hard to overlook. As the evening went on and the restaurant emptied out, the service dropped off completely. We had to ask multiple times for water and sparkling water, and they never arrived. Course including the main took a very long time to come out (very different from the rushed feeling of the first half of the meal). For the last dessert dish and after waiting quite a while, I ended up just asking for the check. That last dish didn’t even come nor acknowledged. To be fair, some dishes were tasty, and the overall concept is great. But for the price and setting, you expect a much higher standard of hospitality—and this time, it missed the mark. In short: Beautiful space, some great food, but disappointing service.
THOMAS R — Google review
We hosted our brother and sister-in-law for dinner at Krishnarpan in Dwarika’s, and the experience was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, everything felt thoughtfully curated and warm. The traditional setting instantly drew us in, and each course felt like a story told through Nepal’s rich culinary heritage. Our server, Kumari Dolma Lama, was outstanding. She was knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely kind. She explained every dish in detail, told us where the ingredients were sourced from, and never hesitated to answer our many questions. Her calm demeanor and constant smile made the entire evening even more special. The food itself was remarkable. Even the simpler dishes like bhyanta (eggplant) and stuffed lauka, which we never thought we’d enjoy so much, were surprisingly delicious and full of flavor. Each item on the menu tasted fresh, intentional, and beautifully balanced. You could truly taste the effort and authenticity behind every bite. Overall, Krishnarpan gave us one of the most memorable dining experiences. It’s not just a restaurant—it’s an experience that captures Nepal’s tradition, soul, and hospitality in every detail.

The environment and atmosphere are what stand out here. Very well decorated, comfortable seats, wide tables and spacious. The portion sizes are big, unless you're a very big eater, stick to the smaller number of courses. The food was just okay, certainly not worth the price we paid. It was well presented but the taste didn't match. We had 200 npr momo better than here. The service from staff is not consistent, we had just one that was good, a lot of them did not provide a description of the food and we had to keep asking for water.

Beautiful setting, excellent service. The 6 - 22 course options are a great idea. I did 9 and was stuffed. It's priced for tourists but worth it

It was my first time visiting Nepal and a friend recommended this place. It’s a good place to try different Nepali dishes, although pricey. Wonderful ambiance and good service. I had a great experience dining here.

A great experience. I recommend if you are looking for a tasting menu experience in Kathmandu. It’s nothing but an experience from the initial hand washing and taking your shoes off when you arrive. To the table and apron they put on you. We did the 6 course meal and it was perfect. Lovely time and I would go back again.

Newa MoMo Restaurant is a charming, family-owned eatery located on a quiet street in Kawabahal. Despite its unassuming appearance, the restaurant has gained recognition for its delicious homemade food, particularly its cheese and spinach momo and potato momos. Visitors praise the spot for its cleanliness and budget-friendly prices. The cozy atmosphere and warm hospitality from the chef add to the overall experience.
If you’re looking to explore authentic Nepali cuisine, this restaurant is a must-visit. From the moment you walk in, the warm hospitality and inviting ambiance set the tone for a memorable dining experience. The chicken momo were absolutely delicious – perfectly steamed with flavorful fillings and accompanied by a tangy achar that packed a punch.

This place is a gem in Thamel! Delicious momos! The atmosphere is charming and and the owner Raj is very kind and accommodating. We enjoyed the fried mushroom and cheese momos and the chicken momos as well as the desert chocolate momos. Also the cherry beer is the best beer I have ever had. You must try this place when you come to Kathmandu!

I was recommended to this place by my hotel as they have the best MoMo in town, so I had to try. Let's say I ordered too much. Steamed Chicken, Fried buff, Spicy Lamb. My favourite taste wise was the Steamed Chicken, with Spicy Lamb second. I think Spicy Chicken would be amazing. They have cooking classes too!!! Give this place a go.

Had the buffalo momo - so good! The local beer on the side fit just right. 10 pieces of momo for one order can fill you up. The staff was really helpful and kind, too! The restaurant is down an alley, and then turn right to go further into the block.

What a cute and tiny place with some amazing momos and even more! We had the beef ans vegetable momos + thukpa with chicken. And oh were we happy about the food. The momos were fried, soft, juicy and flavourful and the soup was just like your mom would make it when you are sick. 5/5! 😉 well deserved!

The place was quiet when I got there. I had some momos- koto! One of the best I have had since arriving in Nepal like 3 weeks ago. Do not skip it- it is a bit low key but the food was great!

Bhojan Griha is a unique dining experience in Kathmandu, housed in a 150-year-old building that was once home to royals. Despite its somewhat eerie interior, the restaurant comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere and offers a delightful 5-course traditional Newari feast. Guests are treated to faultless service and entertained by traditional dancing while savoring dishes like vegetable thali and Raksi (home brew).
The atmosphere was warm.. The tables were set low with the seats. It was a different experience but enjoyable. Food was served along side with the cultural performance. It's a wonderful experience. Thankful to our host who brought us here.
Andria A — Google review
Honestly - a tourist trap but a good one. Priced at usd30 for dinner including a rice wine. Lots of dances from different areas, which is fun, and the diners joined in. Food was fine, not the best, but given the atmosphere, it was worth it.
T S — Google review
This review may only be applicable to foreigners. There is an excellent and varied menu on the website. It is not available to foreigners. We asked about it and we were told we could only have one menu, quoted in US dollars which is always strange, attached here. Interesting, the locals at the table next to us had a totally different menu and food than we did. Foreigners are not allowed to order what they were ordering. Apparently. The meat was much tougher than expected, service was fairly flat. There are no signs so you have to walk through the building and somebody was holding a speech or religious service and you have to walk through it. For a price that is extremely high in Nepal, especially given the lack of choice available to foreigners relative to what is advertised on the site, it was a very bad deal (Note we were here for lunch, I understand there may be some evening music and entertainment and this review only applies to lunch)

Worst experience🥱 Food was okay Cultural dance 👍 Service 👎 Do visit to experience the vibrant Nepali cultural dances — a wonderful showcase of diverse traditions and rhythms. You’ll truly enjoy the performances, though the long wait for service might make the experience feel a bit less exciting.
Niraj S — Google review
The menu isn’t suitable for kids, and there’s no wheelchair access. The fixed menu offered no choices, and the water quality wasn’t great. There were no options to purchase bottled mineral water, and when we brought our own, the manager was rude and dismissive of our feedback. While the cultural show was a nice effort, more variety and options for kids and international guests would enhance the experience specially for the price paid

Baber Mahal Revisited is a captivating destination that beautifully blends history with modern charm. This trendy complex, set within the elegant restoration of an early 20th-century royal palace, offers visitors a delightful experience filled with boutique shops and exquisite dining options. The meticulous restoration of the original structures transports guests to another era while providing access to high-quality crafts and clothing. Among its highlights is Chez Caroline, a renowned restaurant serving delectable French cuisine since 1996.
Overall Impression: A pleasant dining experience with delicious food, though a bit pricey. Food: I enjoyed the Chicken Talli Set, a four-course meal. The soup was flavorful, the momos and vada were tasty, and the Talli rice set was satisfying. The dessert was a sweet treat to finish the meal. Service: Service was prompt and attentive. Ambiance: The restaurant has a nice ambiance, likely due to its location in a historical building. Value: The prices were slightly higher than expected, possibly reflecting the unique setting.

Beautiful place to visit for tourists & visitors. Shows rich history of the Rana’s. Lunch at Mulchowk was good but i feel somehow that treating to the nepali visitors and foreign visitor is different Parking is a big issue here otherwise great place to go. About Babar Mahal: Babar Mahal, Baber Mahal is a Rana palace in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The palace complex, located north of the Bagmati river, was incorporated in an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. Initially, the palace was under Jung Bahadur Rana's Thapathali Durbar but was later separated, demolished and rebuilt by Chandra Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana, as prime minister and the executive leader of Nepal.

Baber Mahal Revisited Mulchowk Restaurant and Bar The colonial architecture is beautiful. Very popular among diplomats in Kathmandu, Nepal. Very nice place to hang out with friends and family to get away from the crowded city. It's a historical place and bit expensive. Amazing place to walk around. The place is melange of art, history, food and shopping. There is many small shops inside Baber Mahal Revisited for buying Nepal based souvenirs. This baked cheese cake is dense and creamy filling which will melt in your mouth. It has a velvety texture, rich and thick too. It was slightly burnt on the top as well, and crust were perfectly flat. A perfect sweet treat to enjoy in the warmer months of the season. It's big enough for 2 person. I could not finish all of it there, remaining i brought it back to Bangladesh 😂 and also forgot to keep it in refrigerator the whole time, but the funniest part is it didn't get spoiled at all and was edible :D I have tried baked cheesecake. Price : 807 Nepali Rupee (Tax and service charge included) 📍 Location : Tanka Prasad Sadak, Kathmandu 44600, Nepal Overall Experience : Food : 9.5/10 Intererior : 10/10 Service : 9.5/10 ⚠️ This is my personal opinion. Astrek Climbing Wall is a popular spot in Kathmandu, offering wall climbing and bouldering for all skill levels. Located in Thamel and Paknajol, it features the tallest climbing wall in Nepal at 50 feet with twenty different routes catering to various experience levels. Additionally, there are bouldering walls available for those seeking a full-bodied climb. The center provides ample staff and guides to assist beginners.
The climbing gym is small but perfect for beginners, they rent the necessary equipment for rent, organize belay and belayer if you want to climb with the upper belay, explain the initial level of classes, there are routes separated in colors for climbing with a rope, about 6 ropes of the tracks, there is a corner and there is a small overhang An open air climbing climbing, in the evening there is a backlight, also small horizontal bars for pull -ups and exercises. The staff is very friendly like a company of people that was engaged in that day .

We ended up going to Astrek indoor climbing gym and highly recommend this place to escape the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu! The staff were lovely, the environment was chilled and we got much needed upper body movement. The price for the day was excellent too: 700NR for shoes & harness rental to top rope and boulder with an excellent restaurant and mountaineering shop (Petzl and Black Diamond) inside. You can easily spend 4-6 hours hanging out here. Thank you for welcoming us!
Sapphira B — Google review
This place is pretty awesome, with 7 belay stations, a bouldering wall, grip challenges, a foosball table, surrounded by fun shops, a couple of restaurants and a in house bar/grill you can easily spend a few hours here and it feel like minutes. We never had to wait very long to be able to climb, food was pretty tasty and the service was fast. While the drinks and food were a little higher in price than we would have liked, it’s thamel so you cant expect much when it comes to value. For the year it costs 17,500 per person, for a month its 6000, and per session its 700. This includes climbing gear needed and someone to belay you. You can bring your own gear if you have it. My wife and I will definitely be back to do some computer work and climb in-between meetings and emails.

A great, old school, outdoor climbing wall. Complete with campus board, hangboard, and pull-up bar. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.

One of the best spots in Kathmandu to hang out. I saw a lot of videos on YouTube of people bouldering like Pewdiepie, Magnus, and Keiani climbing, and I wanted to give it a try even though I couldn't do even a pull-up. The staff were friendly. The fee is 700 for seven wall climbing sessions. In addition, there is a bouldering section where you can climb for as long as you like. Defo worth the money. I had a great time. I would definitely visit again.

Nestled in the heart of Kathmandu, Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth Temple is a captivating destination for spiritual seekers and cultural enthusiasts alike. This sacred site, dedicated to the goddess Guhyeshwari or Adi Shakti, boasts a rich history dating back to its renovation by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century.
I visited the temple in a rainy day which made it look more elegant and beautiful. Not so crowded. You can feel the energy of Shakti very prominently. It's one of the shakti peeth which I came to know. Full of positive energy.
Manabika D — Google review
Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal, is a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Guhyeshwari, an important form of the divine feminine. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, believed to be where parts of Goddess Sati’s body fell. The temple is known for its unique pagoda-style architecture and a silver-plated sacred symbol inside instead of a statue. Located near Pashupatinath Temple by the Bagmati River, it is a peaceful place for worship, especially during festivals like Dashain and Navaratri. Only Hindus can enter the temple, and it is a key site for Tantric rituals performed by local priests. Visiting early in the morning offers a calm, spiritual atmosphere. Guhyeshwari Temple is a beautiful and important spot to experience Nepal’s rich religious culture and devotion to the goddess.

गुह्य =Hidden,ईश्वरी =Goddess, is what is understood if we see the meaning of the Sanskrit words. Built in the 17th century by Pratap Malla, it is one of the Sakti temples out of 51. As per the mythology, one of the organs, the hip, was crushed here when Lord Shiva was travelling carrying Satidevi's dead body. Located inside the Pashupati area on the bank of the Bagmati River is a quite popular temple in Kathmandu.
Ramesh B — Google review
A Serene Sanctuary in the Heart of Nepal Nestled on the banks of the Bagmati River, near the revered Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, lies the ancient and sacred Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth. This significant Hindu temple is dedicated to Guhyeshwari, a manifestation of Adi Shakti, and is one of the most important Shaktipeeths, sites where body parts of Sati Devi are believed to have fallen. The very name "Guhyeshwari" translates to "Guhya" (secret) and "Ishwari" (goddess), signifying the hidden or secret deity, a testament to its profound spiritual significance.Upon entering the temple complex, a palpable sense of tranquility envelops you. Unlike many bustling pilgrimage sites, Guhyeshwari offers a more introspective and peaceful experience. The main shrine, a multi-tiered pagoda-style structure adorned with intricate carvings, houses a kalasha (water urn) representing the goddess, rather than a traditional idol. This unique representation adds to the mystique and draws devotees into a deeper contemplation of the divine feminine energy.Pilgrims often perform rituals and offer prayers, seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual enlightenment. The continuous chanting of mantras by priests creates an ethereal atmosphere, further enhancing the devotional experience. The temple's location by the Bagmati River, considered holy by Hindus, adds to its sanctity, and many devotees take a dip in its waters before offering prayers. While not as grand in scale as some other prominent temples, Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth's charm lies in its spiritual potency and serene ambiance. It offers a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Nepalese Hindu traditions and provides a sacred space for quiet contemplation and unwavering devotion. For anyone visiting Kathmandu, a pilgrimage to Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth is not just a religious journey but an enriching cultural and spiritual experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Peaceful & Sacred Temple in Kathmandu Guhyeshwari Temple is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in Hinduism and a must-visit when you are in Kathmandu. Located very close to the famous Pashupatinath Temple on the banks of the Bagmati River, it is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The temple has deep spiritual energy, and the atmosphere is calm, filled with the sound of bells and mantras. The architecture is traditional Nepali style with a golden roof and sacred interiors. Unlike the busy Pashupatinath, this temple feels more peaceful and meditative, making it perfect for quiet prayer and reflection. Priests are kind and can guide you through rituals and pujas if you wish to perform them. One thing to keep in mind is the presence of monkeys around the temple. They can sometimes snatch food, water bottles, or other belongings, so be careful and keep your things secure. Overall, visiting Guhyeshwari Temple is a divine experience, especially for those interested in spirituality and Hindu culture. Highly recommended as part of your Kathmandu trip. 🙏✨

Absolutely divine and extraordinarily blessed! The Guhyeshwari Shaktipeeth Temple is one of the most sacred and powerful Shakti Peethas in Nepal. The spiritual energy here is indescribable - you can feel the divine presence of Goddess Sati the moment you enter this holy sanctuary. This ancient temple, built in the 7th century with stunning pagoda-style architecture, is impeccably preserved and radiates an aura of timeless devotion. The intricate interiors, beautiful statues, and the serene pond create a perfect atmosphere for meditation and prayer. The location near Pashupatinath adds to the profound spiritual significance of this sacred site. The priests are deeply knowledgeable and perform the rituals with utmost devotion and respect. The temple management maintains exceptional cleanliness and organization, making the darshan experience truly memorable. The massive banyan tree outside is itself a magnificent sight that adds to the temple's mystical charm. A must-visit for every devotee and spiritual seeker. This is not just a temple - it's a powerful center of Shakti that fills your heart with peace and divine blessings. Jai Mata Di! 🙏

This was my fourth visit to Seeing Hands, and once again, the experience was absolutely incredible! Lalu is truly the best massage therapist I’ve ever had. This was my second trip to Nepal, and again I went to Seeing Hands multiple times after trekking. This massage center is definitely one of the best in Kathmandu (if you consider the price, it’s probably the best). I can highly recommend Kamal, as he’s been doing two 90 minute sessions with me this time and was very flexible, strong and cautious in his approach. We worked through some trigger and pain points I’ve had for years and it was very relieving. Thanks!

I went for a sports massage. Junu was very professional, friendly and maintained good communication throughout the session. She quickly located the affected area and released the stress points. Its a shame i didn't book for 90 minutes and went for 60 minutes session due to time constraints. Highly advise others to book for 90 minutes if you have more issues in the upper body (like me), otherwise won't have much to do with lower sections of the body. I have visited couple of therapists abroad previously and i am glad to receive a quality service which is worth your time and money. Will definitely recommend others about this place and shall revisit again in future. Thank you to the teams.

Hindu temple
In the heart of Kathmandu, you'll find the bustling market and the captivating Akash Bhairab Temple. The temple is home to King Yalamber and is believed to hold great power due to tantric practices. It's dedicated to Akash Bhairav, also known as the "god of the sky," and features traditional Newari architecture with its three-storied structure. Non-Hindus are restricted from entering, and it's adorned with metal lions at its entrance.
Akash Bhairab Temple आकाश भैरव (आजु द्य:): Visited February to May 2024: I haven't been inside this temple, but, even only from the outside, it's definitely fantastically beautiful. It's right on the junction of several very busy and arterial roads/lanes.

Akaash Bhairav temple, located in the hotspot of the traditional city of Newars, is a pure example of traditional Newari architecture. This three-storied temple is longitudinal in plan with its front façade facing to the East. Akash Bhairav 'Lord of the sky' is one of the popular Bhairav of Kathmandu Valley. He is also known as 1st King of Kirat, Yalambar in Nepal, as Barbarika in Mahabharata and Āaju meaning First King in Nepal Bhasa and Shyam Baba in Rajasthan. This temple is located merely 10 minutes away from Kathmandu Durbar Square. In the religious and cultural aspect, Akash Bhairav is also known as the god of rain by the farmers. As Nepal is heavily dependent on agriculture therefore farmers ask Ahash Bhairav’s blessing in the true form of prayer. Indra Jatra, an annual 8-day festival devoted to the god, is also celebrated with great enthusiasm. Followers from all over the world come to Kathmandu to be a part of the important pooja rituals performed during this time of the year.
Khagendra B — Google review
Beautiful temple is a historic quarter of Kathmandu. The main bhairav is displayed outside dieing Indra jatra. Best to visit at night then. Nearby ships are also great: lassi, glass bead necklaces. Tons of other historic sites and places to visit nearby as well.
Red M — Google review
King Yalamber resides in the Aakash Bhairav temple in Indrachowk, Kathmandu, and is thought to have attained power through tantric practices. Although he is thought to be an appearance of Lord Shiva, like Banasura, he may also have been a disciple of the latter. In Nepali tradition, the account of Aakash Bhairav's involvement in the Kurukshetra War has numerous further additions. Hindu deity Akash Bhairav, known as the "god of the sky," is honored in a number of large temples in Kathmandu. He is also regarded as the ancestor of the Maharjan caste, particularly the peasant groups. The figure atop Aakash Bhairav's head is one that both Buddhists and Hindus recognize as Buddha, making the idol of Yalamber/Barbarika/Aakash Bhairav one that is revered by everybody. In Kathmandu, the head of the Aakash Bhairav was discovered several centuries ago. The head is currently housed in a nearby Hindu temple in Kathmandu, not too distant from Durbar Square. Once a year, it is brought out of the temple and blessed by the Kumari, a living goddess who resides close by at Kumari Chowk. The Bhairav is typically worshipped as a symbol of strength and protection. The temple contains a decked temple and the god for eight continuous days during the ceremonies of the Indrajatra festival.

A great way to end my visit to Nepal, on my final day in Kathmandu! Learned some new techniques and some new spice combinations, as well as how to make an obvious favourite: Momos! Very friendly teachers, who even helped me book a car to the airport after my class finished. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to broaden their culinary horizons.

My cooking class was such a lovely experience and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to step away from the usual tourist activities for an afternoon. The four course lesson allows you to mix and match from a selection of menus, and then you learn about the ingredients before doing the actual cooking. It's well structured so that you can get a lot done in 3 hrs while also having plenty of time to chat and get to know your fellow students and your teachers. As a solo traveler, I appreciated the genuine connection I got to make with my group - it was memorable and very sweet. And of course, you get to eat the delicious meal you prepared! Even if your religion is different, this is definitely a must-see in Kathmandu, it feels like a real spiritual journey! Luckily, some friends showed us the proper way to do it. Just be mindful of others and keep quiet while doing the “ritual.” We ended up doing three circles around the stupa, and it was such a peaceful experience.

surrounding establishments vary, with many praising the spiritual and scenic experience of the stupa itself, the views from nearby restaurants, and the presence of a large Tibetan community. However, some restaurant reviews mention issues with service, cleanliness, or food quality, while a few hotels report limited light or poor maintenance

This ancient religious site features an iconic stupa, numerous temples, and shrines. The stupa at Swoyambhu Mahachaitya holds great significance for both Buddhists and Hindus in Kathmandu and has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1979.

A big religious complex on a top of a hill, with a big stupa and many interesting objects. The view from the top is amazing. You can also see monkeys.
Balázs K — Google review
Swayambhunath Stupa, affectionately known as the "Monkey Temple," is one of the most spiritually and visually captivating landmarks in the Kathmandu Valley. Perched atop a hill, this ancient stupa is not only considered the birthplace of Buddhist faith in Nepal but also draws countless pilgrims and visitors with its unique architectural features and breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and embodies the essence of Nepali culture. The core of the stupa is a monumental white hemispherical base, symbolizing the world and the cosmos. Above it proudly stands a gilded rectangular harmika (the base of the spire), upon which the unforgettable All-Seeing Eyes of the Buddha are painted on all four sides. These eyes gaze out in every direction, representing the Buddha's omniscience, wisdom, and compassion for all beings. The symbol resembling the Nepali numeral "१" (number 1) between the eyes is interpreted as the single path to liberation, which is through the Dharma. Extending upward, the thirteen tiered spire symbolizes the thirteen stages of spiritual attainment that practitioners must achieve to reach complete enlightenment. Swayambhunath's history dates back to a legendary era. It is believed that when the Kathmandu Valley was a vast lake, a miraculous lotus emitted a "Self-Existent Flame" (Swayambhu). Later, the Bodhisattva Manjushri drained the lake with a mighty sword slash, and the lotus transformed into this holy hill. The presence of numerous monkeys on the hillside, considered guardians of the sacred site, lends the stupa its vibrant character and its common nickname, the "Monkey Temple." Climbing the long flight of stone steps on the eastern side is a ritual act of pilgrimage. Along the way, devotees turn prayer wheels, and colorful prayer flags flutter in the breeze, creating a rich spiritual atmosphere. This sacred site perfectly exemplifies the syncretism of Nepali religion: though primarily Buddhist, it is also highly revered by followers of Hinduism. Standing on the stupa platform, one can feel the peaceful religious power while taking in the sprawling, charming cityscape of Kathmandu below, a view that is especially spectacular during sunrise or sunset. Swayambhunath is a perfect symphony of history, faith, and natural beauty

Swayambhu Mahachaitya, also known as the Monkey Temple, was one of my favorite places I visited in Kathmandu. The climb up the stairs is a workout, but the view from the top makes it completely worth it you can see all of Kathmandu Valley stretching out below. The stupa itself is stunning, with prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the sound of monks chanting in the background. What I loved most was the peaceful yet lively atmosphere monkeys running around, people spinning prayer wheels, and locals offering butter lamps and flowers. It’s one of those places that feels both spiritual and alive at the same time. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Nepal. Go early in the morning or at sunset for the best experience. *UNESCO world Heritage site* * monkey safari

The climb of 365 steps is a pilgrimage in itself, surrounded by mischievous monkeys and the scent of incense. Reaching the top reveals the magnificent, ancient stupa with its all-seeing eyes, watching over the Kathmandu Valley. The energy is palpable—a mix of chanting, spinning prayer wheels, and quiet devotion. The panoramic view of the city is stunning. A must-visit for a true sense of Nepal's spiritual heart. Pro Tip: Go early to avoid crowds or later for sunset. Hold onto your sunglasses and snacks—the monkeys are clever!

Nestled at the foot of the Shivapuri hills, Budhanilkantha Temple is a spiritual gem unlike any other in Nepal. Home to the massive, awe-inspiring statue of Lord Vishnu reclining on a bed of cosmic serpents, this open-air temple radiates serenity and sacred energy. The black stone statue—over 5 meters long—is said to be over a thousand years old, and it rests calmly in a sunken pond, symbolizing Vishnu floating in the cosmic ocean. The detailing is exquisite, and the sheer scale of the sculpture draws you into quiet contemplation. You don’t have to be religious to feel something here. Surrounded by trees and the backdrop of the green hillside, the temple has a peaceful, almost meditative vibe. Devotees offer flowers, incense, and quiet prayers, and the sound of bells and soft chants lingers in the air. Unlike some of the more crowded temples, Budhanilkantha feels personal, humble, and deeply connected to nature. It’s a perfect place for reflection, photography, or simply experiencing the spiritual heartbeat of the valley.

For me, Ekadashi brings to mind family widows observing a fast, elders abstaining from meat, or those with arthritis lamenting increased pain. However, it was in Nepal that I came to understand its significance. Last Sunday was Maha Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu begins his four-month cosmic slumber, known as Chaturmas. During this period, other deities are believed to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining cosmic balance. It is here in Kathmandu that you will find the largest reclining statue of Lord Vishnu, asleep on the serpent Shesh Nag within a pond believed to possess miraculous properties. It is said that in the 5th century, during the rule of the Licchavi dynasty, a farmer chanced upon this statue carved from a single block of stone. Later a temple was built around it in the distinctive Newari style. Known as Budhanilkantha (buda -bura or old, nil - blue, kantha- throat) this is one of the most sacred and scenic places in KTM. Set against a breathtaking backdrop of mist-shrouded mountains, it brings much solace to our cluttered minds.
