Espace Jean Tinguely - Niki de Saint Phalle is a captivating museum located in an old tram depot in Fribourg. It showcases the remarkable paintings and sculptures of husband-and-wife artists, Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle. Visitors can marvel at Jean Tinguely's sculptural machines and admire the bold creations of Niki de Saint Phalle. The museum offers a unique opportunity to witness the artistic collaboration between these two renowned artists.
The museum consists of 2 floors, with the first being animated sculptures. Do press the red buttons on the floor to see the animations, which are quite cool. The pieces here are not what you would usually find in a normal art museum, so the experience was quite refreshing. Note that the explanations were in French and German only, and the staff, though friendly, also spoke limited English. There were also lockers and hangars for bags and jackets. Overall an interesting place, good for about 45 mins to an hour.
Weiq — Google review
Nice little museum that can be visited in less than one hour and that includes mechanical sculptures from Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle. There is also a documentary to watch

Quite small exhibition but the art works have so much little details to discover.

Very beautiful artworks but it's so small it's not worth paying for😂
Matilde Z — Google review
Take the time to admire the Tinguely sculptures (most of them animated). If you go with kids they will love it.
Carolina A — Google review
Very cool and interesting pieces. You can look at the main piece for an hour and still find something new
Griffin O — Google review
Very little to see. Most of the place was shut off with signs saying "new exhibition coming". But still full price entrance...

The Museum of Art and History in Fribourg is a historical site that showcases locally created artwork and artifacts from the Middle Ages. Spread across three old buildings, the museum features a stunning garden adorned with monumental sculptures by notable artists like Saint Phalle, Luginbuhl, Ramseyer, Wiggli, and Angeloz.
Beautiful museum, it was a nice refuge from the rain
Emily C — Google review
The museum is split into 2 parts, with the first consisting of mainly religious sculptures and paintings (4 floors), and the second consisting of historical pieces and artefacts (3 floors). It is quite nicely laid out, and there is a map of the museum to guide you along. I found that information on the objects and each room itself was lacking. For people who don’t speak French or German, note that there are no English translations available. Overall a decent museum if you enjoy religious works and exploring the history of the area, but that didn’t interest me too much. I spent slightly more than an hour there.
Weiq — Google review
I'd give it five stars - it's a very decent and interesting museum of local art and history with a great collection of gothic sculpture, perhaps not always first grade but still remarkable. But what annoyed me immensely is the way many gothic sculptures were spoiled and disfigured by some kind of "modern art" action probably carried out quite long ago (there are stickers mentioning the year 2010, if I remember well). There are some ribbons wrapped around the figures, and also some plastic "hands" stuck in them. This is unacceptable, straightforward ugly, and should be immediately removed, also for conservation reasons. Have some respect for real art. Apart from that, the museum is worth visiting for its historic exhibition, a really impressive display of stained-glass windows dating back even to the 15th century, and also for its second part with a great display of stone sculptures, archeologic artefacts and above all great exhibition of Adèle d'Afry's sculptures. If you like visiting meticulously, reserve at least three hours. There is one more important shortcoming, however: there are detailed descriptions but only in German and French, no English. My French is good enough to understand most of the text nevertheless you should definitely add English which is the most universal.
Łukasz W — Google review
A captivating collection of historical 'gems' in which you can emerse yourself.
LionHeart867 — Google review
Needless to mention the importance of this culture and heritage institution! It is one of the "must see places" in Fribourg. And reserve at least 2 hours only to glance through the different collections. I highly recommend it!
Rromir P — Google review
So much potential here being wasted. There are many interesting historical objects capable of building a detailed picture of the history of Fribourg... but the context of the collection is completely lacking. Information is all object-specific with many paragraphs of long-winded prose for each painting, sculpture, etc (French/German only). But nothing ties the pieces together. Unfortunately 15 minutes spent on the Fribourg Wikipedia page would provide a far more coherent idea of the cities past than any number of hours in this museum.
Hugh O — Google review
Everything was excellent except the exhibition on racism. It was very surface level and non-educational. Felt like it was designed for children. Rest of the museum was very interesting and good though

Musée Gutenberg is a museum housed in a 16th-century building, showcasing exhibits on printing, graphics, language, and bookbinding. Visitors praise its beautiful scenography and well-organized displays. Although it's not widely known, the museum is considered worth visiting. However, some note that the information is only available in French and German. The venue also hosts weddings and conferences. Overall, it's described as an interesting and informative place to visit.
Very nice and informativ museum
Merja J — Google review
Very disappointing museum. Exhibits not in chronological order and jumbled. Not much specifically dedicated to Gutenberg and his printing press. Inconsistencies and mistakes in the explanations and poor planning of the floors. The one good thing they had (an original page of the Gutenberg Bible) is poorly displayed in a badly illuminated attic with nothing telling you it’s there.

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Fribourg, Hôtel de Ville is a charming bistro that beautifully marries elegance with artistic flair. Housed within a historical building, this delightful eatery offers an elevated European dining experience crafted by owner-chef Frederik Kondratowicz. The ambiance exudes a bourgeois bistro vibe, enhanced by stunning views of the city from its windows.
Beautiful restaurant in the heart of Fribourg! We enjoyed a delicious lunch: salad/terrine for the starter, duck filet as a main, and a very good cheese plate or a fruity tartlet with ice cream for dessert. The lunch menu was incredibly good value for money - CHF 26 for starter & main + CHF 10 for dessert - we first thought the bill was wrong… We are looking forward to returning!!

Superb food experience! The food taste magnificent and the service was comfortable too. Every single bite was a journey. No exaggeration, one of the best fine dinning restaurants I’ve ever been! We will definitely come back!
J W — Google review
A bit strange to find the way from the entrance to the restaurant on the first floor, but then you will be in a beautiful restaurant with excellent food, lovely staff and a great view during daylight. Solid, well cooked food, moderately priced for the quality you get. Really worth a visit!

Alexander W — Google review
We had a wonderful time in this gastronomical yet not too arrogant restaurant. Artsy environment and very good food match well together. Our waiter Julien was friendly and very good with us, allowing us to have a fantastic dinner. My favorite was the foie gras and tartar.
Julian H — Google review
Without doubt one of the best restaurants in Fribourg, if not the best. You even dare bring your Mom. Raport quality/price is excellent and the ambiance guaranteed. Mr. Kondratowitz's self-taught cuisine surprises seasoned eaters as well as amateurs. And surprised you will be....a spicy, curry sorbet that could easily fit as a desert served as an amuse-bouche? Brilliant. Discover niche-wines, get "shaken culinarily", enjoy the friendly staff and discover miscellaneous art (pictures, paintings and statues). The decor reminds me of a upper standing Parisian "bistro". A true pleasure every time. For ambiance, get a table in the main salon, for more discretion and quiet ask for the Salon Bleu and if you dare, sit next to the piano and pretend it's yours for the evening. Bon appétit !
Paal S — Google review
Great restaurant! From outside you don't expect such a beautiful place inside. Small menu but the quality of food is really high. Fast, efficient and kind service. Price: correct. Fully satisfied!
Stefano C — Google review
Food is good, presentation of the plates are great, sauces and blending of taste and colours are refined and one can see there's a lot of effort behind it. One off point though. A condescending attitude from one of your personnel was not great but we'll definitely come again for the food.

St-Nicolas Cathedral, also known as Cathedrale Saint-Nicolas, is a remarkable Gothic-style cathedral situated in the heart of Fribourg, Switzerland. Construction began in 1283 and continued for over two centuries, resulting in a captivating blend of architectural styles. The cathedral's facade boasts intricate sculptures and a stunning rose window. Inside, visitors can admire the Chapelle du Saint Sepulcre with its lifelike sculptural group depicting Christ's burial from 1433.
The Cathedral of St Nicholas represents three diferent periods of western art and architecture. The edifice of the building is from the Gothic period - as is the choir gate, the baptismal fonts, the pulpit, the cross, 'The Burial of Christ' and two sculptured portals. One of the famous Catholic Church..

St. Nicholas Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas) is an impressive Gothic cathedral and a symbol of the city of Fribourg in Switzerland. Its construction began in 1283 and was completed in the mid-15th century. It is especially famous for its bell tower, which stands 74 meters high. Inside, it features stunning stained glass windows, some of which were designed by the renowned artist Joseph Mehoffer. The cathedral is located in the heart of the historic city center and holds an important place in the cultural and religious life of the city.
Azad P — Google review
A breathtaking spiritual and architectural experience. Visiting St-Nicolas Cathedral was one of the highlights of my time in Fribourg. The moment you step inside, you’re struck by the sheer beauty and grandeur of this incredible Gothic structure. The stained-glass windows are absolutely stunning — each one tells a story, with colors and details that catch the light in the most magical way. The play of sunlight through the glass fills the space with warmth and reverence. It’s a place that invites both quiet reflection and deep appreciation for art and craftsmanship. The organ is magnificent, and although I didn’t catch a live performance, I can only imagine how powerful it must sound echoing through the cathedral’s vast interior. Whether you’re religious or simply interested in history and architecture, this cathedral is a must-visit. There’s a sense of calm and sacredness that fills the air, and you can really feel the soul of Fribourg in this space. I highly recommend climbing the bell tower (if it’s open when you visit) — the panoramic views over the old town and surrounding countryside are unforgettable. A true treasure of Fribourg. Don’t miss it.

(Translated by Google) I read reviews about the friendly nuns and the warm welcome and decided to visit the abbey. I walked from the Loretta Chapel, apparently this is not the most successful path. The gates were open, there were cars parked in the yard, I was able to go into a small church, but the abbey itself was closed and no one answered my calls. This is how we got a “warm” welcome. The artist, admiring his friend's passion, decides to pay tribute to him through a sculptural work. In 1984, the fountain was inaugurated in a public space, near the square of the same name, after a long process of negotiations. This work is specifically designed for this place, where water becomes much more than a simple functional element. For Tinguely, water is a living, almost celestial material, which captures sunlight in the form of a rainbow, freezes in winter and gains volume under the spotlights at night, thus giving the fountain a poetic and dynamic dimension.

It features stunning glass art, a bright nave, impressive columns, a pulpit, and an organ. Visitors can find shade and tranquility at this historic site.
We are US Expats working in Israel and came across Notre Dame during the COVID lockdown in early 2020. We has attended Mass virtually. This weekend 10 December 2022 we finally were able to Notre Dame. Nothing disappointed us. The Sunday Mass was standing room only with young adults and young families. Us old folks were lightly sprinkled about. The Tradtitional Latin Mass in superbly orchestrated, with a fantastic schola and organist. We could the locals love this this church ans sanctuary. I could definitely become an active member here as we were well welcomed though we were strangers. The pastor is friendly and caring. He let us know about Vespers at the Cathedral of St Nicholas of Myra. This liturgy was beautiful and performed in the traditional rite. You must come to visit and worship at Notre Dame, Fribourg.

Free museum located within the university grounds. The museum is on the first floor of the building, and has a fairly large range of exhibits, with a few of them alive. There are about 12 rooms in total, each with its own theme. Within each exhibit there are information panels in both French and German (but unfortunately no English), and some exhibits are also interactive. There is a small (temporary?) exhibition on the second floor as well. Overall a nice place if you’re in the area, but do note that it’s about a 20 minute walk from the station.

An ideal place to spend an afternoon with children. I visit this museum frequently, perhaps 6-7 times a year to either see the permanent exhibition or the temporary ones. My children (8 and 6 years) have visited it so often, they know it almost by heart. The introduction of new technologies in providing additional context are very simple but very educational. I am particularly found of using the sound reproduction tools in the section dedicated to birds. The visits have enabled me to better know the wildlife in the region of Fribourg where I live, especially the birds of pray. There is also an iPhone app that provides additional content and it can bee downloaded for free.

(Translated by Google) Well, Monica, well done, other artists spend at least on paints and canvases, but she didn’t even fork out the cash. I just took sand and blocks from a construction site, brought them to the museum, scattered them on the floor - and ala, the composition is ready. I really thought at first that the hall was being renovated. Then I understood everything and laughed for a long time, I couldn’t stop. Having visited many museums of contemporary art, I have seen different, so to speak, works that have much in common, but I have never seen anything like Monica’s. Bravo, bravissimo to the resourcefulness of Monika Emmanuelle Kazi. Surprisingly, someone takes her “creativity” seriously, they provide her with exhibition space, and publish booklets about her “works.” I just want to exclaim - Oh times, oh morals. In short, I saw the exhibition in ten minutes. I drank coffee and ate a sandwich for a longer time - thanks to the museum staff for this opportunity. I decided to have some refreshment before starting the inspection; I didn’t know that I could handle it so quickly. The staff at the museum is friendly; at the checkout they gave information about the works presented and their authors. It was difficult to find the museum itself, because its facade faces somewhere into the courtyard, and not onto the street, I had to circle around to find the entrance. October 2022.

There are several very spacious rooms where there can be several exhibitions at the same time. The BCF Arena, an ice skating rink in Europe, has undergone significant changes from its old state to a new and improved facility called "bijoux." Accessing the venue is hassle-free, with pleasant views from the stands. The stadium itself is impressive, offering a delightful atmosphere. Despite these positives, there were long queues for food which proved discouraging after waiting for 20 minutes without progress. Additionally, finding parking around the arena can be challenging due to ongoing renovations.

The Service archéologique is a captivating structure that exudes beauty from its exterior. With origins in the Middle Ages, it served as both a barracks and armory for an extended period of time. La Pleureuse, also known as Trinkwasser, is a poignant sculpture by artist Franziska Koch that has captured the hearts of Fribourg residents since its unveiling in 2003 during the Belluard Festival. This enchanting piece, inspired by an antique doll and themes of heartbreak, portrays a child-woman whose tears transform into flowing water. (Translated by Google) The museum clearly needs a boost. Many defective bulbs leave certain rooms in an unpleasant darkness, the tiles are broken in places, and the whole thing is visibly lacking in maintenance. The exhibition also lacks dynamism and modernity, which is a real shame when we think of the historical importance of Cardinal beer for the city of Fribourg. This place, which should be a living tribute to a local emblem, instead gives an impression of neglect. The idea is beautiful, but the execution is disappointing. (Original) Le musée a clairement besoin d’un bon coup de frais. De nombreuses ampoules défectueuses laissent certaines pièces dans une obscurité peu agréable, le carrelage est cassé par endroits, et l'ensemble manque visiblement d’entretien.
