Located in the Kato Mera area, just a short distance from the Kales, is the House of Napoleon, also known as "to spiti tou Napoleonta." While visitors cannot explore the interior of this small building, it's still worth a visit during a stroll around town. It offers an intriguing glimpse into the historical connection with Napoleon and adds an interesting stop to your sightseeing itinerary.
The architectural building does not represent anything special. Only very low doors are impressive. All dictators were or are very low.
Iy ( — Google review
There is not much to see here, it is just a house and you cant enter it
Martin B — Google review
Absolutely not worth to travel and visiting this place. As per official opening hours on Google 8:30-15:30, reality on doors 8:30-13:00 but during our visit not opened at all. Very unprofessional not mentioning online they are closed so people don't have to travel. Luckily this town has other interesting places to see including beaches.
Jiri S — Google review
Not much to say, good to see a place preserved and renovated and maintained. It was close because it was Sunday.
Elie S — Google review
We saw a little sign poining to “the house of Napoleon”, and decided to take the 50 steps to look at it. The title makes it sound like it is an actual house of Napoleon, so we were suprised that we did not heard of this place before. Upon inspection it was not really noteworthy, as it was only a place that Napoleon may or may not have stayed a night while travelling, also not being a super interesting house (see picture attached). Nothing historically proven, so it should be seen as a local piece of lore. Either way, it’s close to the road where tourists walk past, so can’t hurt to check it out.
Martijn K — Google review
Napoleon’s House in Ierapetra is a charming two-story building with classic Greek architecture, located in the historic Kato Mera district. Tradition says Napoleon Bonaparte stayed here during his brief stop in Crete. The building dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century, making it a fascinating piece of local history.

The Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra is housed in a 19th-century Ottoman school and showcases various artifacts from different historical periods. Among the notable exhibits are ritual pots, jars, axes, Roman lamps, Greco-Roman statues from Viglia, and the intact statue of the goddess Persefoni dating back to the 2nd century CE. Visitors praise the museum for its well-displayed and explained items, as well as its free admission.
A smaller museum, yet well curated for its size. Rich with beautiful artifacts from the local area, mostly focusing on Minoan and Roman periods. Housed in a historic building (not as old as its collection though). Good to know that there seemed to be no air-conditioning, nor gift shop.
Sofia W — Google review
small but beautiful collection. the statue of demetra is stunning. cost is 5 euro. you got 3 rooms. there are very interesting things from everyday life. there is very nervous lady on the reception. museum is closed on monday and thuersday.

Excellent little museum collection showing the importance of Irapetra from Minoan times. Some beautiful artefacts and statuary. Staff were friendly and helpful. Recommended
TravelSpirit M — Google review
Small but important collection of antiquities from the region. You will need half an hour to walk through it and read through the informative texts. It is closed on Tuesdays.
Nikos P — Google review
It was interesting but I have to say that I was expecting something a bit bigger. To see the whole collection takes you maybe about....15-20 minutes? There is also no parking lot which is a price for historical building in the downtown but is still something to bear in mind.
Will Z — Google review
It was a little difficult to find it open. It was small but very interesting with lots of fascinating exhibits and friendly staff
Steve W — Google review
A great place to visit, with some really impressive items.
M P — Google review
the museum is very nice but with little things to see. The building is very nice but too small. Don't compare it with a large museum as you will not spend more than 20-30 minutes reading everything. It's nice to see some history about the Minoan ancient times and some maps of the area. The ticket costs 3€ and come with small money as they don't have enough traffic of tourists to exchange high bills.

Nestled in the heart of Ierapetra, Greece, the Hamidiye Mosque stands as a testament to the region's rich history. Originally constructed in 1891 during the Ottoman era, this former church dedicated to Saint John was transformed into a mosque by Turkish occupiers. While it is no longer open for worship and may not be perfectly preserved inside, its exterior remains well-maintained and charming.
Late-19th century Ottoman mosque partially survives in ethnically-cleansed Yerapetre, Turkish Girit. Nihat Kerem A.

Venetian Fort Kales, located in Ierapetra, is a historical gem dating back to the 14th century. This well-preserved fortress has withstood the test of time and witnessed significant events during the Venetian and Ottoman wars. While currently closed for fortification, it remains a prominent cultural venue hosting events like the Kirvia Cultural Festival. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the beach and harbor from this vantage point.
A very well-preserved fort of the Venetian era. It can easily be visited and seen within a few minutes. This was obviously a fort providing a base for the local garisson, far smaller than the massive Venetian fortresses of the northern coastline (Spinalonga Heracleon, Rethymno, Chania, Gramvoussa), comprising the main defensive network of the island during Venetian rule.
George S — Google review
The Venetian Fortress of Kales in Ierapetra is a charming historic site by the sea. It sits right at the entrance to the city’s port and is the only remaining fort on the south coast of Crete. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries during the Venetian period, it was later repaired under Turkish rule. The thick stone walls offer great views, making it a peaceful and interesting place to visit.
Monika T — Google review
Not very big, but beautifully restored and an important historical building. Good views from the top, but it won't take you long to explore. Worth a stroll around though and admission is free.
Kevin E — Google review
The Fort is closed for fortification at the moment. The narrow alleyways roads recall the towns' Ottoman past. Patience is required to navigate the one way loop you are required to navigate in reaching the fort. I followed directions to the "Port" to reach the location these photos were taken.
Blithe S — Google review
Great place to visit. Value for a free walk around is a good time investment.

Koutsounari Long Beach, located about 38 kilometers southeast of Agios Nikolaos, is a stunning stretch that spans approximately 5 kilometers. This beach stands out for its serene atmosphere and never feels overcrowded, making it an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility away from the bustling northern beaches of Crete. The combination of soft grey sand and crystal-clear azure waters creates a picturesque setting perfect for relaxation.
Soft sand, clear water, vast space, colorful pebbles, best restaurants. Options for organized areas or unexploited areas.

Súper friendly beach and not so crowded in the middle of the day. In the afternoons there are a lot of people specially families. The only difficulty is if you find wind because it gets wild. Otherwise beautiful coastal area 🌙
Kiriaki C — Google review
Wonderful beach, you can choose either to stay by yourself or to go to the sunbeds. Gorgeous sea and pebbled beach. Unfortunately the surroundings are still dirty, with trash alongside the road.
Iris L — Google review
It is definitely a long beach! Mostly shingle, finer towards the eastern end. Easy access and parking in the middle section, with sunbeds and umbrellas around a beach bar. Water sports are also available. There is also access via a fairly steep track at the western end. Smaller waves than expected for a beach this open, but there are better beaches for swimming and walking. There may be naturists on the western section.
Anthony C — Google review
Really long beach, beautiful pebbles, clear waters, kid friendly

Ha Gorge, located on the eastern part of Crete island in Greece, is a steep and narrow gorge with technical canyoning routes and waterfalls. It is situated on the west slope of the Thripty mountain range and boasts rich flora and fauna. The gorge is quite short, around 700 meters, but falls 325 meters in that distance. Access to this geological fault is extremely difficult, making it unsuitable for amateur attempts to enter.
Visited the area when there wasn't any water. The whole side of the massive mountain is steep and provides shadow and source of water for many animals. Met few goats there. An amazing scenery of the coast. It's kinda windy there. There is also a small chapel in front of the mountain. Parked next to the chapel.
Anita S — Google review
Beautiful to see, but not accessible without equipment and experience. Information panel visible, large geological fault creates the beautiful and sudden height difference between valley and plateau.
Mike L — Google review
Very beautiful place. If you are coming with a car, look for a church of holy spirit and park your car there. Amazing sight much better from here than from suggested Monastiraki village.
Aurimas G — Google review
Short and nice must see place. Nothing really special, but almost unique shape of this gorge you will hardly find somewhere else. You can climb up to 10-15 meters to the first water basin. And that's all, because further way only for alpinist. Leave the car 50 meters before small church. Btw this church is open, just pull the door.
Andrey Y — Google review
Amazing nature. Park by the church and a short walk to the gorge.
Lisbeth K — Google review
very nice. for climbers. there is trails for harness. easy to climb, easy for athletic person. haven't seen anyone. was solo.
Marco I — Google review
Incredible gorge! You'll spot it from a distance as you drive on the main roads. Definitely worth a small detour and a shirt excursion to see up close. Put it on the list of things to come back to and explore by canyoneering down from above! Magnificent!
Justin W — Google review
The Ha Gorge is unusual in that it is extremely narrow, quite short (around 700 metres) and falls 325 metres in that short distance. It isn't possible to walk the gorge; this is one for abseiling and wetsuits. The narrowness and poor access makes this a difficult subject for photography, though there are spots above, below and at the junction with the Mastoras Gorge where photography is possible. For most people, the gorge will remain just a dark slice through the massif of Thripti seen when travelling to or from Ierapetra. Perhaps this is just as well: the gorge is home to several endemic species of plant not found elsewhere in Crete.

It is truly remarkable to witness the incredible achievements of an ancient civilization that was able to create massive reservoirs by carving solid rock near the sea using only basic bronze tools. Although the location is not well-documented, a slight amount of climbing is necessary to reach it; however, this effort will be rewarded with an extraordinary sight. The use of Google Maps can simplify the process of finding this place. Nearby, there is a hotel where waste disposal facilities are available.
Incredible to see how this ancient culture managed to carve massive water tanks out of solid rock at the edge of the sea with nothing more than basic bronze tools. The site isn't well mapped and will require a little bit of gentle climbing to get to, but well worth seeing.
John C — Google review
Easy to find with google maps. Near is hotel where they have trash place. Some people probably dont realise that you need to put trash (water bottles etc) to litter and dont leave their garbage at this beautiful place. Beautiful view at beach and Ferma

Beach Maheridi is a hidden gem nestled in the stunning Lasithi region, offering visitors an incredible experience with its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. Known for its unique pink dolphins, often referred to as strawberry or royal dolphins, this beach emphasizes the importance of protecting nature for our own freedom. While some may find access challenging, it’s actually quite manageable; just pack your essentials like ice-cold drinks and flip-flops!
Amazing wild beach with incredibly clear water. There’s some shade under 2-3 tamarisks, and if you come early you can even choose the tree :) Water shoes might be necessary, but you can also manage without. It looks like the water is perfect for snorkeling

Mecredi. The pink dolphins can live here known as strawberry dolphins, but you have to go to math tutor for things stay well and balanced. People call them royal dolphins but we call them liberty dolphins concept. No, so protecting the bay itself is protecting your liberty. The manatees and dolphins exist in space balanced and healthy

Nice little beach. A bit of climbing to get to the beach and back. Not much shade. Waves, and the water deepens quickly from the shore. If you care, there are nudists and regulars on the beach.
Denis R — Google review
Perfect place. Nice for snorkeling, swimming and relaxing. A couple of trees provide some shade for those who need it. Easily accessed via a short dirt road from the Ierapetra - Siteia main road.
Kjetil S — Google review
No clue why people say it’s hard to get there. We carried a bucket with ice and beers some sup boards umbrellas and all of us were with flip flops. Of course it’s not a road but it’s not that hard as people present it. In general it’s an amazing beach and a gem of lasithi imo. Worth to visit!
Yannis — Google review
Good beach, perfect for snorkeling. But too close to the road, and there are two stops where weirdos and creeps come to stare at women. Had two creeps during my stay who would come every 1 or 2 hour and stare for 5-10min before driving away.

The sand, the sea, the wind are different, the sun is shining from the other side, all this together gives a feeling of some kind of alienness, a feeling that you are not in Crete, but somewhere very far away. After the bustle of the north, peace and detachment take over here. If you come here, your nervous system will thank you. (Original) Хороший чистый и оборудованный пляж. 14Pyrgos (Myrtos) Archaeological Site

Historical landmark
Nestled atop a hill, the Pyrgos (Myrtos) Archaeological Site is a fascinating remnant of a Minoan settlement that dates back to around 2000 BC. While not an organized site, it offers an adventurous climb along a rough path that winds through olive groves, leading you to stunning views of the Mediterranean.
A Minoan settlement, destroyed around 2.000 BC. Its remains are scattered all around this hilltop and make for a nice climb with great views over the Mediterranean. This is not an organized site, but there is a sort of path that will lead you up to the settlement. Be careful of the steep climb and wear proper shoes. The remnants right on the top with some elaborate stone floors and walls are the most interesting parts of this site. Thousands of pottery shards litter the site, remnants of a lively past.
Nikos P — Google review
When you cross the bridge from Myrtos the path is straight up on the corner of the mountain. We walked a different route up because we missed the path. Its a steep climb and a nice view of Myrtos when you are up there. Do not climb it on your flipflops. There was not much to see of the archeological site. And no sign to tell you what you are looking at. But nontheless we had a really nice walk.
Lisa J — Google review
Hard to find due to lack of signage. A stiff climb up to it, hoping we were following the right track! When we got there it was impressive, but we didn't understand any of the ruins as there are NO descriptive signs at all! This could be so exciting if the site was properly signed!
Robert B — Google review
Open Minoan site of Pyrgos a short walk / scramble up the hill. 10 minutes to the top, but you'll need good grip on your shoes. On top you can wander among the ruins and enjoy the view. Stunning!
Bob D — Google review
This is an open archaeological site. It takes 15 minutes to climb the hill. The view is rewarding!
Georgios P — Google review
Directions to find it from Myrtos, cross the Myrtos bridge and immediately turn left at the sign for the ruins, park immediately on the right. Follow a rough path where you have parked up the hill and across a small olive grove. Continue up the path. Interesting ruins with shards of pottery everywhere.
Martin R — Google review
Great view! Peaceful and quiet. It doesn't take much time to get up the mountain (15 minutes approximately)
Felix K — Google review
A small settlement on a hilltop. The starting point has no sign. Its 10 minutes walking up, through an olive yard, very beautiful! Very windy on the top, be careful how to step! Easier with a walking stick for security. Beautiful views!

15Minoan Village of Vasiliki

Historical landmark
The Minoan Village of Vasiliki is a captivating historical site perched atop a small hill, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. While access to the ruins is restricted due to fencing, visitors can still appreciate the beauty and significance of this ancient location from outside. Despite its closure, the allure of Vasiliki remains undeniable, making it a worthwhile stop for those intrigued by history and breathtaking scenery.
This site is locked and you can only walk up to it and enjoy the ruins from outside the fence. As usual the ancient site is built on the top of a small hill so the views are great.
Nikos P — Google review
There are no facilities. Gates are locked but there is a hole in the fence. It looks like the site hasn't been worked in years, slightly overgrown
Tony C — Google review
Quite hard to find and when you get there not much to see due to the fence. Park at/near the brown sign for the site on the side of the road. We didn't and after following a track, cutting through an olive grove and climbing a small cliff, we found the back gate! It's better the other way.
Philip R — Google review
A beautiful spot, unfortunately the site is fenced off but there is a hole, I resisted lol
Richard W — Google review
It's now closed off to the public but still somewhat visible from outside the fencing. Once upon a time there seemed to be a booth for admission, now completely abandoned.
Etienne C — Google review
It's closed but looks amazing.
Anita S — Google review
Not exactly a destination. Well signed, up the hill off narrow but metalled lane, best try to park on the main road. It's fenced, gated and unattended. The wire fence has been helpfully lifted in one place and fixed back, so you can get under. Essentially it's a typical neglected site, not big, foundations of a few stone buildings obvious, lots of rubble, no information.
Colin A — Google review
Nowhere to park. But it probably would have been interesting had we parked dangerously on the road by the footpath sign.

Historical landmark
Nestled in the stunning landscape of southeastern Crete, Fournou Korifi is an archaeological gem that showcases the remnants of a Minoan settlement. Located just two kilometers east of Myrtos, this site offers visitors a glimpse into early Minoan civilization dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. To reach it, travelers should follow signs along the road and then take a scenic drive around the hill.
Amazing Minoan hilltop town. Find the signs by the side of the road. Then drive back around the hill towards the East, leaving the signs behind you. Watch for a greenhouse on your left, on the hill. Park on the side of the road. Walk up the car track with the greenhouse on your left (see photo). It's a bit steep, but safe, and you will see the gate and a sign for the site uphill and to your left. DO NOT try what the signs on the road want you to do (scramble up a rocky gorge). The site is well worth the walk on the track.
Diane B — Google review
Don't walk up from the sign. Go East around the corner and walk up the pickup track to the right of the greenhouse which is on the north side of the road. Easy walk right to the gate, almost.
Howard B — Google review
A major Early Minoan settlement in rather poor state. The conservation technique of the walls is not of good quality.

17Mylonas Waterfall

I just want to thank the person who put 'no water' sign at the beginning of the path. It means a lot to people! :heartemoji: We decided to go up nevertheless. The path is steep for the first 10 -15 min. After you reach the concrete drain line (water supply line) the path is easy (5min more to the waterfall). Up there is beautiful, even with no water. Surrounded by rocks and trees this place gives you peace.
Ruzica J — Google review
The climb is quite challenging but very cute waterfall, loved the walk on the ancient aquaduct !
Karelle B — Google review
We were there in summer. The waterfall was hard to find. When you look it up on Google maps, you have to search for the hiking path, not the waterfall. The hiking path is hard to follow as there are very few signs. Also you have to be very carefull when you use a car. The road is in a bar condition. With lots of rental cars, it is not allowed to drive on such roads. When we arrived at the waterfall, there was no water. It would be better, if there was a sign at the beginning of the path, if the waterfall is active at this time of the year or not.
Manuel K — Google review
Widely advertised but falls short of expectations!Coming from Ierapetra Google maps took me through a HORRIBLE road (much worse than off road) although there was just another (but not equally bad) road. I stopped short of the beginning of the bottom of the hike to the waterfall, afraid that I might not make it up the steep incline. Then looking around and going back and forth finally I found a broken sign and I made an attempt to reach the waterfall but stopped by a wire gate, meaning (?) no pass. I went back, wondered around and eventually talking to a couple of other visitors attempted the same path, reached the wire gate and opened, although there was no sign as such. Very difficult climb (watch people who think it’s ease going) till a second wire gate (I guess to prevent goats going in and decimate the vegetation?) after which the climb and the path improved. The final third of the climb was through a concrete aqueduct not very challenging but in a couple of spots difficult. Eventually made it to a dry waterfall in serene environment and a nice area of relaxation. On the way down it took only 25 min to get to the origin of the climb. I followed the alternate route on the way back to the highway which was MUCH better than going up. Otherwise fantastic area with wild beauty. Make sure you wear good sneakers although I saw few ladies trying to make it on slippers!
Gustav G — Google review
14K short run from Koutsonauri and back between heels in the morning. Unfortunately the waterfall was run of water, but the route is very nice, a few uphills and a few downhills, just to wake up and to start a new day!
MIPAKO — Google review
Easy to miss the trail, but its marked with a red arrow by the information board. Easy hike with a nice narrow walk on a concrete viaduct. Lovely views and the waterfall at the end is cold and refreshing.
P S — Google review
Good day everyone! I hope you are enjoying your holiday. I wanted to put up here that this photo area can be a little confusing to find. So the part you might want to find is right off the main road. If you keep driving or hiking up the mountain you are wrong. The first picture is the way the road looks 1kM from the photos spot of the falls. The 2nd is the nasty road you climb to get to this spot. So again there are signs on the main road no where near this, I also ran into a few hikers asking where the falls were in this area so I know I’m not the only one. Good luck and it is beautiful up here, just didn’t find the falls.
Galen A — Google review
It's a really good path for hiking, but once you are there, you'll realize that there is no water in July, August or September, avoid going there if your only goal is to see the waterfall
