Santa María La Mayor, also known as Iglesia de Santa Maria la Mayor, is an ancient Catholic church in Trujillo that beautifully combines various historical and architectural influences. Originally a Visigothic temple, it was transformed into a mosque during Muslim rule before becoming a Christian church. The building's Gothic architecture showcases the intricate craftsmanship influenced by its diverse history.
Great church in good condition. The entrance is only 2€, plus 1€ if you want an audio guide. It absolutely worth the visit. You can visit the church with its beautiful retable, as well as visit to the top of the two towers. They are the highest view points of the Trujillo and offer views to the castle, town and surrounding grasslands. The upstairs of the tower with no bells on top are very narrow and steep. The tower with the bells has wider upstairs and more intermediate floors to take a rest in the ascension.

Small church in the historical centrum of Trujillo, charges a small fee (about 2 euros) for entrance. The inside is simple and made of rock, displaying an old architecture style. Once in, you get access to the church's and go up the (many) steps to get a nice view of the whole city.
João L — Google review
This is one of two churches in Trujillo Spain. This one not quite as good as the other but still worth a look. Both were far more authentic working churches than others we have seen that are drenched in gold. This one has a bell tower you can climb - about 100 steps but with breaks where you can take a break - very doable. The view from the top is worth the effort.
JamT — Google review
I don't like to pay to visit a church but the audioguide here is good since it's actually catholic!

Upon entering Plaza Mayor in the heart of Trujillo, it's like being transported back to the 15th century. The well-preserved churches, the impressive Moorish castle, and the imposing statue of Peruvian conquistador Francisco Pizarro all contribute to this feeling. The narrow cobblestone streets add to the ambiance, making it easy to imagine what life was like in this town when it was first named by King Juan II of Castilla in 1430.

Iglesia San Martín de Tours, located in Trujillo's Plaza Mayor, is a significant 14th-century building with a solemn and austere appearance. It served as the meeting place of the Trujillo Council and holds great civic interest. The interior features the prominent Virgen de la Coronada and numerous tombstones on the floor due to the absence of a cemetery until the 16th century.
This is the second church in Trujillo and is right on the main square. It is probably the most authentic church we have seen in Spain. If the real working deal is what you prefer then this is the one.

(Translated by Google) You absolutely must visit the churches of San Martín de Tours and Santa María la Mayor in Trujillo. You need to buy a ticket to visit either one or both. We chose to visit both churches for €8 per person (there are discounts for people with disabilities, etc.) and it was truly worth it. Both churches are beautiful. They have an audio guide for each person, included in the price, which explains everything you see in a simple and engaging way. Both the churches and the artwork inside are very well maintained and illuminated. And the staff at the entrance are excellent. In addition, Santa María la Mayor offers a spectacular virtual reality experience included in the price: a bird's-eye view of ancient Trujillo, the surrounding area, the market and the artisans, and then a view of the church as if you were flying through it. An experience you can't miss! It's worth visiting both if you go to Trujillo. A must-see!

(Translated by Google) It's super beautiful, admission is only €2, which is well worth the price, and it's open every day. Not only can you see the ground floor, where you can see the various chapels and the main altarpiece, but you can also go up to the first floor, something that's not very common in these temples. From above, you can see the stained-glass windows better, where various religious figures and objects are on display, and you can look out from the balcony overlooking the plaza. I loved it.

Cultural center
The Torre del Alfiler is a historic defensive tower dating back to the Muslim era, originally part of the castle walls. It features a metal rod in its dome and beautiful Talavera tiles added for defense. This Gothic tower is a distinctive symbol in Trujillo's skyline and was later transformed into the keep of a fortified palace. Today, it houses a visitor center focused on local and regional history, offering insights into different stages of Trujillo's past.
(Translated by Google) It was part of the Moorish citadel, but starting in the 16th century (by order of Isabella the Catholic), it became the keep of the Chávez Orellano family palace. You can climb to the top via a spiral staircase, where you can see the entire plaza and the rest of Trujillo. The best views are from the outside and from the main square. You can climb to the top of the tower and try to look through windows that need a good clean. But save you energy for another climb.
Mark W — Google review
(Translated by Google) Externally relevant tower, it could not be visited because it was undergoing renovations, even though it is included in the joint entrance to 6 monuments of Trujillo, this option is not really advisable, since two of the places cannot be visited and of the others, it is worth visiting the Alcassaba and Pizarro's house - museum, the others are completely dispensable (Original) Torre exteriorment relevant, no s’ha pogut visitar per estar en reformes, tot i està inclosa en la entrada conjunta a 6 monuments de Trujillo, realment aquesta opció no es aconsellable, dons dos dels llocs no son visitables i dels altres, cal la pena la visita a l’Alcassaba i a la casa - museu de Pizarro, les altres son totalment prescindibles

Gloss Gin Club is a trendy spot in town, offering Spanish tapas plates and specialty cocktails. It's located on the bar-lined Calle Sillerias, making it a great stop during a night out. The club features various spaces, but the highlight is its terrace with stunning views of the floodlit castle. The indoor/outdoor wine and gin bar, housed in a stone building, provides an enjoyable experience. Visitors praise the delicious tapas and recommend trying the jar and toasted bread.
Amazing place😄 The new owners are angels and try the best for your comfort. The best view to the legendary square is always there. Highly recommended for a cocktail 🍸🍹

Ancient Ruins
Trujillo Alcazaba, also known as Trujillo Castle, is a medieval Moorish stone fortress with 8 towers and a horseshoe arch. Situated at the top of a granite hill in the city, it was built between the 9th and 12th centuries over an Arab citadel. The castle offers panoramic views of dusty plains dotted with smaller castle ruins and ancient walls. It has gained popularity as one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones.
Trujillo is an amazing place to visit. You are surrounded by history . You actually feel.like you are in a movie set in some historical movie . The atmosphere is something else . Trujillo has great restaurants , cafes and bars. . Everyone is very helpful and great fun the Spanish have a wonderful way of always being fun loving and engaging If you need help they are more than happy to help . Trujillo is full of history the Plaza Mayor is stunning you need to give yourself time as I'm the summer it gets VERY hot so my advice is do what the Spanish go out when they do before it gets too hot,to eat at the time they eat their main meal from 2 o'clock rest after a long lunch and go out in the evening to walk around at a leisurely phase no rushing about Trujillo is to enjoy and observe .
Zeta K — Google review
Very well maintained old castle. Not a lot to see inside the castle itself, but you do get to walk along the ramparts and a little in the sewers below. Not bad for 2€. This is the castle from Game of Thrones Season 7 used for Castelry Rock.

Well worth the visit. Best to walk up to it from the Plaza Major in the early morning to arrive for its opening. the views are spectacular as is the place itself. The 'old town' of Trujillo, its walls and old streets takes your mind back to the time it was built and you are in awe.
Richard B — Google review
Fantastic stay in Trujillo , the architecture is truly amazing topping with a fantastic Castle.
Dave F — Google review
The Alcazaba de Trujillo is perched up on a hill. This fortified military camp was built in the 13th century mainly for defensive purposes, which is why there are no residential rooms. From what I could see from the outside is somewhat preserved. While it is on the outskirts of the old town, I do recommend going there. Unfortunately the day I went, I waited for an hour for it to open after the lunch break and it never did.
Nanita — Google review
This should be the peak of my trip to Trujillo and I kept it for last. Unfortunately, the opening times are once more wrong online. The local ourist management is sloppy enough to ruin a visit to this town. Certainly not worthy of a town that expires world Heritage status.

The Pizarro House Museum is not actually the conqueror's original house, but rather a 15th-century manor with a replica of his home. The museum spans two floors, featuring recreated rooms on the lower level and a small museum upstairs. While some visitors found the upper floor to be simple and in need of more interactive exhibits, it offers insights into Pizarro's conquests in South America and his Caribbean voyages.
It’s a small museum. Upstairs is the history of his conquests in South America notable Panama and Peru and his trips to the Caribbean. It’s well presented. All written in Spanish so have Google Lens ready.

(Translated by Google) I liked seeing what Pizarro's house might have looked like, given what the figure represents. The museum upstairs is certainly very simple; it deserves a more educational museum with more engaging displays. There's so much technology at our disposal these days, and something much more modern than simple written sheets could be created. Photos aren't allowed inside, although I've seen reviews with hundreds of them. I liked seeing the original objects on display, but I was expecting more.

The origins of Trujillo can be traced back to the ancient settlement known as Turgalium. After being occupied by both Romans and Visigoths, Trujillo came under Arabic rule for more than five centuries, during which it witnessed significant progress. Later, in 1232, it was conquered by King Fernando III and became a Christian territory. In 1430, Trujillo was granted the status of a city by King Juan II.

Trujillo-born explorer & conquistador, Francisco Pizzaro is honored in Trujillo’s Plaza Mayor. This is one of three bronze statues made by the same artist portraying Pizzaro on a horse armed and dressed, ready for battle. The debut of this particular statue was in 1927 in Paris and only moved to Trujillo two years later. This statue catches one’s eye as soon as you enter Plaza Mayor and draws you in to take a closer look.
Nanita — Google review
Classic statue in Spanish town. Nothing truly special about it if you don’t know the history behind Francisco Pizarro.
Luis L — Google review
The equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro is one of a set of three bronze sculptures works made by the hands of the American sculptor “Charles Cary Rumsey”, one is located into the city of Trujillo (Spain and birthplace of Pizarro) this on the Plaza Mayor in front of the San Martin Church, another in the city of Lima, who is the capital of Peru (where he died and buried), and the last statue you can find into the city of Buffalo (USA) located in front of the “Albright-Knox Art Gallery”. All three of them are representing the conquistador Francisco Pizarro mounted on a horse and dressed for the fight with Armor and sword. Pizarro is famous for having led the Conquest of Peru in the 16th century and founded the city of Lima on January 18, 1535 establishing what would be the Viceroyalty of Peru.

(Translated by Google) A symbol of Trujillo that looks out to the world The Equestrian Monument of Francisco Pizarro presides over Trujillo's Plaza Mayor with an imposing presence. Cast in bronze by American sculptor Charles Cary Rumsey, it weighs more than 6,500 kg and was inaugurated in 1929. Curiously, exact replicas exist in Lima and Buffalo, making this statue a cultural bridge between continents. The figure of the conquistador, a native of Trujillo, generates diverse opinions, but as a sculptural work and urban landmark, it is indisputable. From any angle of the plaza, the statue dominates the space, offering spectacular photographic opportunities, especially at sunrise or sunset. Traveler's tip: If you visit the city, start here. From the statue, you can trace routes to the castle, the Church of Santiago, or the Renaissance palaces surrounding the plaza. It is also an excellent meeting point for reflection on the shared history of Spain and the Americas. A monument that represents not just a figure, but an entire era. Ideal for travelers seeking to understand the past from the present.

(Translated by Google) La Alberca is one of those hidden corners that go unnoticed if you don't look closely, but that hold centuries of history beneath its surface. Located right on the street, with no entrance fee or opening times, this ancient cistern was originally a Roman bath, transformed in the 13th century by the Muslims through an impressive underground canal system for irrigation. Today, it continues to be fed by three springs and maintains a constant water level of about 7 meters. At over 12 meters deep, the structure impresses with its simplicity and functionality. On one side, you can still see a granite tomb reused as a horse trough, a detail that connects the everyday with the archaeological. A stone plaque commemorates the cleaning carried out in the 18th century, adding a documentary touch to the complex. Traveler's tip: ideal for a reflective pause during a walk through the historic center. Although there are no explanatory panels, some locals are happy to share their knowledge of the site. Better preservation and cleanliness by the municipality would be desirable, given its heritage significance. A silent testimony to the passage of time, perfect for those who know how to look beyond the obvious.

As you stroll through the historic center of Trujillo, make sure to stop by the Casa-Fuerte de Luis de Chaves "El Viejo." Nestled alongside the ancient city wall and standing guard over the Puerta de Santiago, this impressive fort-house dates back to the 14th century. Originally built by Don Luis de Chaves "El Viejo," a notable defender of Isabel of Castile, it served as a crucial point for protecting access to the citadel.

It has a large Homage Tower that defended the “Puerta de Santiago”. In later centuries it was inhabited by the "Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus" and, later, a nursing home for the elderly. Bodegas Habla is a cutting-edge luxury winery located in the village of Trujillo, Extremadura. As you stroll through the historic center of Trujillo, make sure to stop by the impressive Casa-Fuerte de Luis de Chaves "El Viejo." Nestled against the ancient city wall and standing guard over the Puerta de Santiago, this fort-house is a remarkable piece of history. Originally built in the 14th century, it served as a stronghold for Don Luis de Chaves "El Viejo," who was a notable defender of Isabel of Castile.
(Translated by Google) The Alcázar or "strong house" is attached to the walls of the town of Trujillo, next to the gate of Santiago. After initial construction in the 14th century, during the reign of King Alfonso The Catholic Monarchs were housed in this fortress when they visited Trujillo in the years 1477 and 1479. It has a large Homage Tower that defended the “Puerta de Santiago”. In later centuries it was inhabited by the "Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus" and, later, a nursing home for the elderly.
