The Musée Soulages in Rodez, Aveyron, is a modern art museum showcasing the works of renowned artist Pierre Soulages. The museum's impressive contemporary architecture blends seamlessly with its surroundings. It houses a collection of paintings, etchings, and prints by Soulages, as well as temporary exhibitions featuring artists like Picasso.
Very interesting place to visit, quite an insight into an unpretentious artist. Someone I didn’t know much about. Simple style of painting, the lighting effect alters them depending where you stand & his other forms of creativity. I will visit again and spend more time in there. A couple of photos of my fave pieces. There are also some fantastic photos on view too. A lovely building of corten steel, unobtrusive.

Had to see the works donated by a son of the soil. No wonder he loved his hometown so much; it’s beautiful here!
Trini G — Google review
Nice exposition, small enough for kids, big enough to learn interesting details of soulages’s life and art
Laura G — Google review
Beautiful museum and stunning permanent exhibition. The audio guide that costs 4 euros is woefully inadequate. Whilst the information is good, it is really difficult to follow as the displays are not in an obvious order so not easy to follow the works chronologically. Also out of date and the commentary speaks of M. Soulage in the present tense.
Sarah E — Google review
One of the most beautiful museums I have seen. The architecture has an exceptional harmony with the pictures of Soulages!!!
Markus F — Google review
Impressive building. Very black art. But it touched me
Thomas L — Google review
Amazing museum, very unique. The art is really spectacular, especially the etchings and the "outrenoir" pieces when viewed from different angles. The explanatory texts are easy to understand, give sufficient detail to appreciate Pierre Soulages' techniques and the progression in his art. The room dedicated to his stained glass windows made for the Abbey in Conques is particularly fascinating. Highly recommended!
Steven L — Google review
A must see Museum if you are in Rodez and like contemporary art. Pierre Soulages has lately designed the glass for St Faiths Abbey in Conques-en-Rouergue. So you can see how he designed them and then visit to see them in place.

Musée Fenaille, located in the former 16th-century Hotel de Jouery, offers a comprehensive journey through the history of the Rouergue region from prehistoric times to the 17th century. The museum showcases archaeology, art, and local history, featuring artifacts dating back 300,000 years. Its main focus is on sculpture, with its most famous exhibits being the 5,000-year-old menhir carved stones - Europe's oldest monumental statues.
The best kept secret in Rodez. This place has all you needs to learn of history of ancient Rouergue (the region of modern Rodez) through most era and even before man came to give a name to all the animals (as per Bob Dylan). Sometimes you may also be treated (like we were) to browse the installations of a temporary expo. We were highly interested by the exhibition about ancient statues of Ethiopia. Really recommended to spend some time in this very interesting museum which can be visited with no fee if you pay a ticket for Musée Pierre Soulages (alternatively you will enter the latter for free if you pay your 12€ visitor fee at Musée Fenaille) .
GILBERT P — Google review
Very intersting museum located inside an old mansion. The staff is super nice and very knowledgeable. Our daughter (and us) enjoyed the visit.
Karine E — Google review
A very good little museum in the heart of Rodez. The museum is based in an ancient town house that has been converted and modern architecture applied to it, it works very well. The museum charts the history of the area from prehistoric times, and houses local carved standing stones (see pics). Very nicely presented with descriptions in English for a lot of the exhibits. Entry was 11 € for adults. Should anyone from the museum read this review, please note the coin (see photos) is described as English but it isn't! Thanks.
James D — Google review
Interesting museum in a very fine building. The statue menhirs are very well displayed and clearly lit.
Geoffrey H — Google review
Great archeology museum in Rodez. Highlight are the menhir statues.
Dale N — Google review
Very interesting museum with beautiful pieces from the Antiquity, Middle Ages and Renaissance found in the Rodez area, especially the amazing collection of menhir statues. The museum has a modern feel and is set in a beautiful ancient typical house. A must-see in Rodez.

Brilliant wee museum with super lovely and friendly staff who were super helpful I'm giving us lots of information and recommendations. Would thoroughly recommend
Victoria M — Google review
Small, but very interesting museum. Clearly not aimed at the foreign visitor. Explanation notes are mostly only in French, and the few explanations in English are not well written. I would recommend a QR code linked to each exhibit with a link to a translation in a selection of languages. Despite the linguistics, we enjoyed our visit here.

Musée Denys-Puech is a stately gallery founded by the renowned sculptor Denys Puech, showcasing works by regional artists. The museum, housed in a stunning white building, has been a hub for modern and contemporary creations since 1989. It celebrates the legacy of Denis Puech, an influential sculptor post Rodin. Visitors can admire beautiful sculptures and paintings, including those of Maurice Bompard and Eugene Viala from Aveyron.
Small but comple collection. A good complement to musee Soulage with a more classical approach. The building itself, built as an art school, is of interest with a staircase view worth discovering. On Saturday afternoons, there is a painting initiation class which is well worth the 2hs, especially with children.

(Translated by Google) Small museum, but a great experience. Sculptures on the ground floor, paintings on the first floor, and temporary exhibitions on the second floor. I found it very nice. I don't understand those who say it can be done in 10 minutes. What's the point of going to a museum if you don't read the descriptions or admire the works? Personally, I really enjoyed it, and the next time I'm in Rodez, I'll go back. The reception staff is very friendly.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption de Rodez is a monumental Gothic sandstone cathedral that was completely rebuilt in 1276. It is known for its impressive blend of Gothic finesse and military might, with an 87-meter bell tower. The western facade is unique, as it is completely closed off by a sheer wall of stone due to the cathedral's position on Rodez's western city wall.
Beautiful cathedral with a lot to see inside. Not too busy.
Mark H — Google review
Very impressive cathedral. The organ has an amazing sound. We were lucky to participate in the concert. I enjoyed the moment.
Fulvio F — Google review
We had a guided tour of the main points of this cathedral, which whilst we are not really churchy people we found it really interesting particularly some of the modern stained glass windows. What was really amazing was the fact that there were no entrance guards with donation boxes, no admission fee and no exit via the gift shop, which seems to be so prevalent these days. So basically you could wander and absorb the atmosphere with no external pressure. A good visit and recommended.
Eric D — Google review
Nice red granitic stones. Old cathedral
B B — Google review
A powerful building, the symbol of Rodez. Purists will love the sturdy Romanesque (we'd call it Norman) structure and the very creative Gothic and later embellishments. Still a vibrant place, the modern stained glass windows are very interesting. Keep in mind, it's not a theme park, it's a place of worship. With the fabulous food of the Aveyron, this place and the Musees Soulages and Fenaille, Rodez is a great place to spend a few days.
Peter H — Google review

Pieter B — Google review
Beautiful and impressive, especially the new windows.
Barbara — Google review
A beautiful church marred by the grotesque stained glass “art” installations in several of the windows. The architecture and most of the windows are awe inspiring and reverent. Shame on the artist and shame on the clergy who commissioned him to vandalize God’s house.

Visitors praise the efficient and observant young waitresses, hearty meals made with good products, and a welcoming boss who caters to both adults and children. The fresh produce meal receives special mention, particularly the delicious caramel pork.

Nestled just a stone's throw from the historic heart of Rodez, Jardin du Foirail is an idyllic green oasis that beckons visitors to unwind and savor the beauty of nature. This expansive park is perfect for leisurely picnics, especially during the vibrant spring and summer months when the weather invites relaxation. As you stroll along paths designed by renowned painter Pierre Soulages, you'll encounter magnificent trees and colorful flowerbeds that create a picturesque backdrop for your day out.

(Translated by Google) The park could be great, but frankly, there are too many problems, and it ruins everything. First, the lighting is a disaster: half the streetlights don't work, the paths aren't lit properly, and at night you can't see anything. It's unpleasant, even dangerous, to walk there. Then, the paths... they're really a load of crap. Before, there was damaged asphalt, not great, but at least you could walk. They removed it, I was happy, I thought, "Finally, they're going to do it properly." Well, no: they just threw sand in it, and that's it. It's been going on for two months, and still nothing. In the middle of summer, it's even worse: every time you walk, you end up with sand all over your sandals or sneakers. What a great idea... Thank you so much for this convenience. When you leave the park, you actually have to take your shoes off to shake them out. I would love to see a small, fenced area in the park, about 10 by 25 metres, so the dogs can run around.

Very bright and very clean establishment. The person who received us is great. We chose to follow the city center discovery route. Very good information sheet. It even seemed to us that the route was marked in yellow up to the cathedral. Too bad when we left we didn't find this marking or it was us who saw it wrong. On our way we had the chance to cross the market. So good, we took advantage of it. Our route turned out to be super pleasant. Lots of “old stones” to see and lots of shops to discover. And, in the end, the amount of parking was completely reasonable with the advantage of not having to look for a space. While passing through the region, I recommend this quick visit and its tourist office.
