Castillo del Rey is a 13th-century castle located in San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria. It stands as a significant historical site alongside the Church of Santa Maria de los Angeles. The castle, with its crenelated tower and small museum, offers visitors an exhibition on the town's history and provides stunning views of the Ria de San Vicente.
A wonderful place to spend a couple of hours and take in the outstanding scenery. €2 well spent. 🙏🏽❤️

Beaches are great, town a little disappointing. Seafood restaurants near the Port end of town looked interesting. Free parking near the Port.

Great walk from the town center to the castle. Awesome views and the cathedral is up there too. You can see the whole robes and the town from there. Peaceful and beautiful. A must see if you are in San Vicente de la Barquera. There sometimes a few expositions of local artist in the near museum. Usually free entrance.

Worth 2€. A couple of interesting things inside, but to be honest the best is certainly the view. Not suitable for people struggling with stairs ;)

Beautiful castle with amazing views around the bay of San Vicente de la barquera. Inside you can see a hugh canon. When you go upstairs you can walk around and enjoy the views and take nice pictures. At the end there is a church you can visit too. Inside the central hall there is a 3D maquete of the castle and town.

Church
Built and expanded between the 13th and 16th centuries, this temple is a remarkable example of the gothic style in the region. Inside, it houses various treasures such as a sculpture of the crucified Christ, a baroque altarpiece, and most notably, the beautiful renaissance tomb of Inquisitor Antonio del Corro.
The Iglesia Santa María de Los Ángeles is a stunning church. The surrounding area is very nice to explore. Lots of interesting details to find. But besides the impressive church, it's the amazing view from here that's most rewarding. A really breathtaking sight over the valley and the Braza Mayor. It carried quite a good amount of water when we visited. So the view was out of this world. Here in northern Spain you almost feel that you got lost and ended up somewhere in Scotland with the green valleys and the water here. It's an impressive sight. We were almost the only ones around and had really time to enjoy it. Taking pics of course, but also just sitting and standing here and taking in these wonderful views. Really worth the quick but steep walk up here from town. Highly recommended and one of the highlights of our trip.
Alex H — Google review
Beautiful viewpoint. A must see if you're in the area as it is near the castle on the hilltop and it's free! Best timing is around sunset. The church can also be visited during certain times (adults: 1,50€ children: free) but I haven't seen it myself in the many times I've been here. There are some areas you can sort of safely climb as well along the crumbling wall.
Quyen T — Google review
It was closed so we couldn't visit the church but the view around is beautiful. Worth stopping to enjoy the sunset.

The Puente de La Maza, a stone bridge over 600 years old, is a remarkable historical landmark in San Vicente de la Barquera. It was once one of the longest bridges in Europe, stretching almost 500 meters with 28 surviving arches out of its original 32. This iconic structure offers breathtaking views of the colorful boats dotting the Ria de San Vicente.

Inside, the image of the Virgen de la Barquera, patroness of the municipality, is venerated. According to legend, she arrived at this place one distant Easter Tuesday, aboard a small boat, without crew, sails or oars, which for years performed the miracle of directing the future wind for sailors. (Translated by Google) The Barquera sanctuary is located very close to the fishing port on the road that leads to the Punta de Silla lighthouse and the estuary formed by the estuary at the mouth of the Cantabrian Sea. It is a hermitage built in the Middle Ages and whose first references date back to the 15th century. The entrance to the chapel is preceded by a small portico with four semicircular arches. Externally, it is a fairly large building with a robust and resistant appearance, built entirely of stone and with buttresses on its west wall that faces the road. The chapel, however, has rather small dimensions since on one of its sides there is a shelter attached to the sanctuary. It is accessed through a lintel door that is located behind a small garden. The interior has a single nave with masonry walls. As soon as you enter, there is an iron fence under a tented arch that closes the way to the chapel. In the apse you can see a marble altarpiece with the image of the Virgen de la Barquera, patron saint of the town of San Vicente de la Barquera. In our case, the church was open only up to the gate, so we were not able to see the image of the Virgin up close. According to a legend, one Easter Tuesday when the sailors of the town were celebrating the Easter festival, these sailors saw a small unknown ship coming in the distance that did not carry sails or oars and in which there was no crew but which was moving in the direction of land. On the ship there was only the image of the Virgin, which indicated the direction of the wind to the sailors who were there. From that moment on, the town decided to build a hermitage in honor of the Virgin so that it would serve as protection for the sailors who went out to work in the dangerous waters of the Cantabrian Sea. Even today, boats that go out fishing sound the boat's siren when passing in front of the hermitage asking for the protection and protection of the Virgin. A very charming hermitage surrounded by a beautiful and very well-kept garden space. It is worth walking from San Vicente for a pleasant walk to the lighthouse, with beautiful views of the sea and the surroundings.

Meron Surf School is located in the picturesque coastal town of San Vicente de la Barquera, boasting two long bridges that connect the town to its stunning sandy beaches. The school offers excellent surfing lessons with top-notch equipment at reasonable prices, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for learners. The friendly and English-speaking staff provide thorough explanations and ensure that students grasp the proper techniques.
I really enjoyed a fantastic surfing experience! This was my first time surfing and it was perfectly guided by Ludo! After 4 hours of lessons I was not only enjoying it but also already able to surf the bigger waves. Highly recommended and a beautiful place to learn surfing. thx Meron

Very well organized surf club. Reservation on advance went fluently. The lesson was tailored to inexperienced surfers. Thank you for the nice first surf day.
Stijn M — Google review
Went here last summer (august) to learn how to surf. We didn't have any experience, but they were very patient with us and together we made it a salty ride! Small groups made it possible to get personal help and feedback in the water and out. Every lessons started with a bit of theory, to increase knowledge about the water and what you need to know when you go surfing by yourself. We took the morning classes (5x), because the beach was more quiet. (and spectacular views as you can see on the photo) Their English was super! Thanks!
Jorine B — Google review
We took a 2 day surfclass with Simone as our Instructor and we loved it. He was great and we had a blast. The Surf school is amazing, everybody was really nice and we will absolutely be coming back. 5 out of 5 can recommend!!
Vivien R — Google review
We have been here last week and had a great time. Good instructions from the mentors (also theory), nice fibes and good attantion. In the water they provide personal instructions and follow your development. We took a class of 5 times x 2 hours. We never surfed before, and these 5 days gave us a sweet base in surfing. The water is great for starters, as well for experienced surfers! Would love to go here again!
Rik M — Google review
Just finished a series of surf lessons with my husband and would 100% recommend! Super nice staff, kit in good condition with a range of different boards to try, and excellent tuition from Nico - we definitely noticed an improvement in our surfing over the week. Will return if we're in the area!
Rebecca M — Google review
Great surf school, can definitely recommend! Good lessons, good equipment, fair prices and a really nice and warm atmosphere overall. The staff and instructors were really friendly and spoke good English. They Explained things well, were patient and made sure we learned the right technique. Besides the actual surfing they took the time before each lesson to explain a little bit about how waves are formed, how currents work and the general rules of surfing, which was really nice and helpful. Meron beach in general is a great place to learn to surf. We went at the end of September/beginning of October. Waves were perfect for beginners (not to big, not to small), water temperature was still nice and because it was after the holiday season it wasn’t too crowded. So in short: We had a great time at Meron Surf School and can definitely recommend!
Victor D — Google review
We took classes here last year (08-‘19). Instructor was very qualified, friendly and besides Spanish and English (fortunately for us) also Dutch speaking. Shop staff was also very flexible, chill and kind! The lessons contained a bit of theory before heading out into the water. Groups were small, so we got a lot of individual attention and feedback in the water. We would certainly go here again!

Bar restaurante La Folía offers a delightful dining experience in San Vicente. The menu del día is a great value, offering generous portions of dishes like fish soup, vegetable stew, and perfectly cooked hake. The warm bread and delectable desserts like lemon mousse and flan add to the satisfying meal. The friendly service enhances the overall experience. Visitors appreciate the good quality and tasty food, as well as the amiable waitstaff.
Fantastic dinner. A little bit of a wait but worth it. Reasonable prices and excellent quality are what you can expect at La Folia. Typical place to have raciones instead of a 3 or 4 course meal.

A lovely place where to eat ! Fish is very fresh and well cooked! They do not take reservations. You write your name in a paper and as soon as tha table is free, a new customer is called and ready to eat. Meanwhile you can drink something and look at the wonderful dishes full of fish that come out from the cuisine.

OK... so here’s what you get for 13 euros each....Great choices on the menu del dia. Fish soup, vegetable stew/soup... so much food and that was only the first course. Warm, wonderful bread, then a huge portion of perfectly cooked hake. Lemon mousse and flan for dessert... oh don’t forget a carafe of very passable vino tinto and a bottle of sparkling water... super friendly service... glad we are walking back to the campsite... eat here...

Cantabrian restaurant
Restaurant
Restaurante Puente La Maza offers an extensive menu, but the 14.50 euro daily menu is highly recommended as it usually includes cocido montanes, a traditional Cantabrian dish and one of the restaurant's specialties. Despite its affordability, it is known for serving quality food and efficient service. The restaurant can get busy on public holidays and weekends, so booking in advance is advisable. Visitors have praised the delicious 'cachopo' and highlighted the exceptional cocido montanes.
A place to try local food. They have a set menu for 20€ per peson. Good service, the food was very good.
Eli A — Google review
Better to book in advanced, specially public holidays and weekends. There is a crazy waiter who is super nice, the service is fast and efficient and ask for recommendations. We tried "cachopo" and it was yummy. The only contra a bit pricey.
Rutas A — Google review
We chose the restaurant for it's quite good reviews. We ordered Patatas tres salsas and Caxopo. The fries are not homemade (which they usually are in this region). They were soft and drenched in oil. The Caxopo was the worst we had since then (and we had many). Being from Vienna I know my ways around a good Cordon Bleu and this one was soaked in oil, not crunchy and did not cover the meat. I cannot recommend this restaurant, it works with the cheapest ingredients and the service was a bit cold. We did not try the fish. The ambiente is normal. Usually we had good experiences in other local restaurants of that kind. Maybe look for something more inlands as it is cheaper and the people are nicer tvere, often you can find family run businesses that are happy to host you.
Othellofriday S — Google review
We were greated rather unfriendly which we attributed to the lack of language skills. The shrimps were sandy and tasteless. The other dish was lukewarm at best. Once we wanted to pay we had ask for the check three times within 40 minutes, unsucessfully. So we went inside to pay and had to wait yet another 5 minutes for the guy to even talk to us. When we told him that either we could pay the check within 2 minutes or we would leave he finally acknowledged us. Another 5 minutes later, he practically riped the money from our hands and threw us out, in a suitably unfriendly tone.

I've been 2 times in the last 3 weeks and enjoyed it very much. Delicious food and wine.
Alexandra B — Google review
Large portions but basic food. Ungutted sardines. Morcilla de Burgos was just that apart from a couple of token bits of pepper. Terrible clumped oily fries. This restaurant caters for Spanish tastes but as northern Europeans it was not for us.

Ría de San Vicente de la Barquera is a charming destination known for its natural beauty and historical landmarks. The Oyambre Natural Park, featuring the estuary of Ría de San Vicente, is a popular attraction offering stunning views and diverse wildlife. While not abundant in monuments, the city boasts remarkable buildings, with the castle being a must-visit site dating back to the late 14th century.
(Translated by Google) The San Vicente estuary is an estuary located on the west coast of Cantabria (Spain), in the municipality of San Vicente de la Barquera, being the mouth of the Escudo River into the Cantabrian Sea. (Translated by Google) Extraordinary place in Cantabria. One of the images that best defines it as a tourist region, since the sea, the mountains and one of the most typical towns in the region come together here. From the Maza bridge is the best photo. The estuary is extraordinarily beautiful, especially at high tide. Although it is also worth seeing when it is low, because of the play that nature gives. (Original) Paraje extraordinaria de Cantabria. Una de las imágenes que mejor la definen como región turística, ya que aquí confluye el mar la montaña y uno de los pueblos más típicos de la región. The Paseo Marítimo in San Vicente de la Barquera is a delightful seafront promenade that captures the essence of this charming coastal town. Adorned with trendy letters that have become a staple across Cantabria, it’s hard to miss this iconic feature. As you stroll along, you'll be treated to stunning views of the ever-changing sea; depending on the time of day, you might see boats resting at low tide or gracefully floating as the water rises.
Beautiful walk around the water, marina and restaurants in San Vincente.

(Translated by Google) A seafront promenade that allows you to appreciate the beautiful scenery it offers. Depending on the time of day, you'll find it with or without water. This is due to the sea level itself, which varies throughout the day. You can see from the promenade how many boats are lying at the bottom, and after a few hours, they're back at sea. It's interesting, and if you're going to this town, it's recommended you stop by to experience it for yourself 🤌🏻 (Original) Un paseo marítimo que te permite apreciar el bonito paisaje que ofrece.

Playa de Oyambre is a wide, modest, white-sand beach with dunes that forms part of the Oyambre Natural Park. It stretches across 2km of protected coastline between Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera in picturesque Northern Spain. The setting is ideal, with green hills rising gently behind the relatively isolated beach. The area is visually stunning and generally very clean, offering activities such as walking, playing 'palas', running, swimming, and surfing.

Paying for parking - ok. But the path to the beach is awful. The beach itself is so overcrowded and the waves make it too dangerous to swim.

Playa de Gerra is a favorite beach in Cantabria due to its stunning surroundings and expansive shoreline. It stretches for 3 km to Cape Oyambre, offering a wonderful beach walk with views of the snow-capped peaks of Europe in spring. While it can get crowded in August, it's still enjoyable for walks and water activities like surfing. The beach features a small bar during summer and ample parking nearby.
(Translated by Google) Gerra Beach, located in San Vicente de la Barquera, is a natural paradise that combines scenic beauty with tranquility. This extensive sandy area, surrounded by green hills and with impressive views of the Picos de Europa, offers an idyllic environment for those looking to relax and connect with nature. The beach is characterized by its fine, golden sand, and its clean, crystalline waters that invite you to swim, although they are especially appreciated by surfers due to their consistent waves. Unlike other busier beaches, Gerra maintains a serene and less crowded atmosphere, ideal for long walks by the sea or simply to enjoy the calm view. The landscape surrounding the beach is equally spectacular, with natural dunes and coastal vegetation that add a wild touch to the environment. The beach has basic services, but its charm lies in its simplicity and the purity of its natural environment. It is a perfect place to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle, whether enjoying the surf, sunbathing or simply contemplating the magnificent views. In short, Gerra Beach is a hidden treasure that deserves to be discovered by those who visit the beautiful region of Cantabria.
