Siguenza Cathedral Basilica is a historic site with a fortress-like exterior and diverse architecture. The cathedral houses a museum featuring Flemish tapestries, funerary sculptures, an El Greco painting, and a British military flag captured from Sir Francis Drake's expedition. It is considered one of the must-see sights in Siguenza along with the castle and Plaza Mayor square. Visitors praise its beauty and serene atmosphere, making it a top destination in Spain.
Wow, this cathedral had way more than we expected. This was obviously one seriously important place back in the day. A large collection of Flemish tapestries in good condition. Some unique funerary sculptures. An El Greco painting. A chapter room with hundreds of detailed carved heads. A British military flag captured from Sir Francis Drake's expedition in the 1500s! For a tiny town, this cathedral is not far off Toledo, Segovia, etc. Its got a good audio guide (free) and the entry price is way lower than the more famous cathedrals, but this one I think is more interesting. And it is on a super picturesque square. A great find to stumble across.

Well worth a visit. It has some features rarely seen in other cathedrals along with a world class collection of Flemish tapestries
Anonguiri — Google review
Stunning architecture, beautiful religious art, and giant amazing tapestries, topped off by a really cool vr look at the village. Well worth the visit and the price (8 euro). All the same things as Zaragoza, but closer together. 😊

As most Cathedrals, a tour trough history, architecture and arts spanning centuries. The entrance ticket includes a audio guide with detailed explanations of the whole cathedral
Manuel V — Google review
One of the most beautiful cathedrals or churches I've ever been to! I'm going to say (and disagree with some other comments) that this church is worth the time to visit, and even with an overnight stay in this beautiful town. The design is unique, probably the result of the many architects that worked on it over a span of 3 centuries. The Virgin Mary altar, the Choir section, the Main Altar, the Girola (a circular nave on the back added later to the main structure) and it's small chapels inside are all spectacular, the art is impressive and the place in itself brings some peace and quietness to life. I recommend getting the audio guide and to spend the 1hr - 1.5hrs that takes to listen to the recordings as the explanations are pretty good with lots of interesting details.

First time in Spain. Madrid, Valencia, but here is number one place ever! divinely beautiful! Recommend 💯 6€ two days 🎟️ ticket

Went for a visit and a lunch to this nice old town. This cathedral should be one of your points to visit in this town, it is just amazing inside. I wish I could have done a guided tour because I want to know more about the history as it has so many different things that I could not understand a lot about the different parts of this church.

Casa del Doncel is a must-visit in Siguenza, located in the La Serrania region of Guadalajara. This historical house offers insights into one of the town's most representative figures and only costs 2 euros to visit. Inside, visitors can explore an exhibition of guitars, learn about Sorolla, and discover the area's past carpet manufacturing.
(Translated by Google) The Casa del Doncel, also known as the Palace of the Marquises of Bédmar, is located in the historic center of Sigüenza, in the province of Guadalajara, within the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. It is one of the most representative examples of 15th-century Castilian Gothic civil architecture and a fundamental element of the city's historical and artistic heritage. The building is situated near the Cathedral and the walled city. Its construction dates back to the late 15th century, and it belonged to the Vázquez de Arce family, whose most famous member was Martín Vázquez de Arce, known as the Doncel of Sigüenza, celebrated for his funerary sculpture in the Sigüenza Cathedral. The Casa del Doncel features a structure typical of the Castilian nobility of the late Middle Ages. Its main façade is made of stone, with a pointed arch entrance and a central balcony framed by Gothic decoration. The facade retains the heraldic shields of the Vázquez de Arce and Sosa families, to whom they were related. The building combines Gothic and Mudéjar elements and was renovated at different times, maintaining its original layout as a fortified house. Inside, rooms with Mudéjar polychrome wooden ceilings and original 15th- and 16th-century structures are preserved. The house was restored by the University of Alcalá and currently houses an Interpretation Center for the Medieval City of Sigüenza and university offices dedicated to research and dissemination of historical heritage. The restoration respected the original materials, using local limestone and wood in the structural and decorative elements. A visit to the building allows you to observe different spaces arranged around an interior courtyard, as well as structural remains that illustrate the evolution of the house from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era. The Casa del Doncel is part of a group of historic buildings that bear witness to the splendor of Sigüenza during the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, linked to the city's ecclesiastical and noble power. Its preservation and current use contribute to the dissemination of Sigüenza's architectural and historical heritage.

It's also known as the Palace of the Marquises of Bedmar, and features Civil Gothic architecture. Inside, you can see original decorations from the Caliphate period and later, including plasterwork, frescoes, staircases, and windows. It also recreates the local industry, both hand-woven carpets from the early 20th century, commemorating the women who worked at their looms during the Civil War and later, as well as the luthiers who specialized in guitars.

(Translated by Google) The square preserves the medieval air. The house can be visited for 2 euros but I don't find it interesting (the best thing is the entrance with Mozarabic remains, the rest is more than enough for me; at the top, a part reserved for archives and another room with guitar and looms an old factory that makes a bit of a hodgepodge of things). The Church of Santiago is a Romanesque structure that lacks religious worship and offers free admission. It relies on donations to support ongoing restoration efforts following the bombing it endured. Notably, the church features an informative interactive display along with several diverse screens displaying videos. Particularly striking is the visible devastation caused by the civil war, as well as the remarkable preservation of remaining fragments.
(Translated by Google) This Church of Santiago (Romanesque Interpretation Center) is very beautiful, located on Calle Mayor in the city of Sigüenza. This Romanesque church dates from the late 12th and early 13th centuries and stands in the middle of the historic center of Sigüenza. The façade is reminiscent of a Roman temple and is very integrated into Calle Mayor, being the only part visible from the outside. It served as a parish church. The church was erected by Bishop Don Cerebruno (1156-1167). It has a single nave. The church was once attached to a monastery of the Poor Clares, which was abandoned in the 1940s. The entrance portal has a bust of the apostle James and traces of the coat of arms of Bishop Fadrique de Portugal from the 16th century. A visit to this church is highly recommended, as is a visit to the historic center of this spectacular medieval city of Sigüenza. (Translated by Google) A Journey to the Heart of Castilian Romanesque The Church of Santiago is much more than a temple: it is a window into Castile's Romanesque past. Located on Calle Mayor, this 12th-century church has been carefully restored after decades of neglect and now serves as an interpretation center that provides an insight into the artistic and spiritual richness of the Romanesque. Its façade is a true gem, influenced by the nearby Church of San Vicente and featuring details such as the coat of arms of Bishop Fadrique de Portugal and the image of the Apostle Saint James. The interior, though sober, is steeped in history, and the center's explanations help contextualize each architectural and symbolic element. The most impressive aspect is how they have managed to preserve the building's original spirit, despite the damage suffered during the Civil War. The visit is relaxing, enriching, and perfect for those looking for more than just a photograph: here you can learn, contemplate, and connect with centuries of tradition. Ideal for lovers of art, history, and architecture. A must-see on any tour of Sigüenza. Nestled in the heart of Siguenza, the Museo Diocesano de Arte Antiguo is housed within the stunning neoclassical Antigua Casa de los Barrena, a 16th-century mansion that stands proudly across from the cathedral. This charming museum offers an impressive array of artifacts from one of Spain's oldest dioceses, featuring archaeological treasures and artworks that span various cultures including pre-Columbian civilizations, Mesopotamia, and Classical Greece.
(Translated by Google) As has happened to many, you visit it because it is included in the entrance to the cathedral. The building that contains it is a very beautiful mansion from the outside, but it does not invite you to enter. Once inside, everything changes. The exhibition is very well organized and the audio guide is very useful to give perspective to the collection, which is broader, more beautiful and important than it seems at first glance. I had a good time enjoying the pieces and details. The model of the cathedral is imposing and only the Immaculate Conception by Zurbarán is worth the visit, although I fell in love with a little painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe. In short, another very convenient place for a visit. The charming enclosed Plaza in Siguenza, surrounded by historic buildings and a church, offers a picturesque setting as the sun sets and shadows gradually fill the area. The late afternoon with its gentle sunlight highlights the beauty of the stone structures, creating a delightful ambiance. This quaint central square provides an excellent view of the impressive cathedral. While slightly pricier due to its prime location, there is a café that serves drinks and small dishes, along with souvenir shops nearby.
What theatre in the wonderful enclosed (well almost) Plaza surrounded by church and buildings as the sun goes down and shadows slowly fill the place. Late afternoon with a low sun is great time to really enjoy the colour of the stone and feel the beauty of the place

Perhaps this location possesses a captivating narrative of affection or an astonishing allegory that would prompt a reevaluation of even Aristotle's ethical tenets. However, to me, it simply appeared as an ungraceful contemporary stone arch. Nonetheless, it is still an arch in the end; what were your expectations for discovery?
(Translated by Google) The Iron Gate of Sigüenza is one of the most emblematic entrances to the medieval city, steeped in history and charm. Located on Calle Travesaña Alta, in the old Morería area—which was the center of the medieval Jewish quarter—this gate was part of the wall that protected the upper part of the city. 🛡️ Notable features: Medieval architecture: Although only one of the towers that flanked it remains today, its structure still evokes Sigüenza's defensive past. Historic setting: The current homes have reused part of the original walls, giving the neighborhood an authentic and characterful feel. Symbolic entrance: It was one of the main entrances to the walled city, and even today you can imagine the passage of merchants, soldiers, and travelers beneath its arch. Many visitors describe it as one of those corners that transport you back in time, perfect for a leisurely stroll and soaking up the medieval atmosphere. It's an ideal place to start a tour of the old town, especially if you're interested in urban history and defensive architecture.

(Translated by Google) If this country's cultural heritage were a classic car, it would be covered in dust in a garage, out of gas, and with the keys lost in some administrative drawer. Of course, the politicians are pictured smiling in front of the hood, while talking about "promoting value" (translation: someone else will fix it... or never). Meanwhile, the Catholic Church—what a surprise—has set up its own "Airbnb of heritage." A temple, a cathedral, a basilica... it doesn't matter: everything has an entry fee, as if they were the absolute owners of what belongs to history and the people. And on top of that, they offer nothing in return: no explanations, no transparency, no real reinvestment in conservation. Just a heavenly cash register. It's curious that regional and local authorities, so quick to organize fuet fairs, tapas competitions, or festivals of "whatever," seem incapable of protecting and promoting the true cultural treasure they have in their hands. Perhaps a Romanesque capital can't be eaten or immediately win votes. In short: between politicians who look the other way and the Church that charges like Disneyland, cultural heritage is trapped in a tragicomedy of interests, neglect, and commercialism. And yet, miraculously, the stones hold.

I arrived unhurriedly, without crowds, and the first thing that struck me was the silence. There was no one else. Just me, the church, and the distant murmur of the countryside. The setting is simply fantastic. Carabias is a tiny corner, almost suspended in time, surrounded by nature and with an atmosphere that invites calm. The church, with its Romanesque porticoed gallery, rises with serene elegance, as if it had been waiting for centuries to be discovered. Every arch, every stone, seemed to whisper ancient stories. Walking under the arches of its portico was an almost meditative experience. All I needed was to be there, breathe, look… and photograph. Because yes, it is an incredibly photogenic place: the light, the golden stone, the landscape in the background… Everything seemed to fit together with a natural harmony rarely found. In short, a hidden gem that needs no embellishment other than its own sobriety. If you're looking for an authentic place where Romanesque art and tranquility go hand in hand, the Church of the Savior in Carabias is a must-see. Castillo de Riba de Santiuste is a castle situated on a hill, offering stunning 360-degree views of its surroundings. From there, take the path to the right and ascend along a dirt track. In less than 10 minutes, you reach the entrance arch (see photo). Historical note: Built in the 9th century by the Moors, it was part of a defensive system against Christian incursions from the north. In 1085, the area was conquered by the troops of King Alfonso VI, the same king who liberated Madrid, and eventually absorbed the entire Taifa of Toledo. Later, another Alfonso, the VII, donated the fortifications and the town to the Bishopric of Sigüenza, which expanded the castle. Destroyed in 1811 by the French during the War of Independence, it reached the 20th century in very poor condition.
