Castello del Piagnaro, named after the slate used in its construction, stands as a strategic stronghold guarding the city and communication routes. Originally built as a tower in the 10th century, it has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. The castle offers stunning views of the valley and town from its well-preserved fortress. Visitors can wander through alleys and streets leading to the castle, enjoying its remarkable illumination at night.
What a gem!! The castle is well kept and fun to explore. The exhibit/museum with the statutes is fantastic! We walked up and took the elevator down. Both easy options. The staff was nice and even had free audio in English. Very well put together and we were very pleased!
IMtrigirl — Google review
We decided to walk around the town and we ended up at a tunnel that ran under the castle and brought you to an elevator. That brought us to the castle and we walked around the outside. Very beautiful and very well kept area. It was $7 each but we were a bit early since it didn't open until ten so we just walked around the castle and slowly back towards town. There were many little hidden gems of streets and small bridges. It was a really nice walk and finished it off with stopping in the square for a cappuccino and gelato.
Matt H — Google review
The castle hosts a very interesting museum on megalithic sculptures of the ancient inhabitants of the Lungian region: definetly worth a visit!
Marco M — Google review
It is a genuine experience of a medieval castle with videos explaining the stele statues. With wonderful views across the town and the surrounding countryside. There is a lift at the end of via Garibaldi by Porta Parma for anyone who cannot face the challenge of the walk.
Philip M — Google review
Don't listen to the person that wrote not to take the lift. The lift is free. Entrance to the castle is €2 and if you want to also visit the museum, then it's €8 total. Well worth a visit. The view is fab. Come during Medievalis... it's great fun.
Heidi L — Google review
Great location. The castle was restored, it's scenic but sadly empty. It hosts a display of menhir statues found in the Lunigiana area and dating back to the Bronze age/iron age 5000 years ago - fascinating monuments that guarded crossroads or river crossings. The menhirs are beautiful and the display inside the museum is scenic with great lighting. By entering the museum you will also get to go on the castle's ramparts, beautiful view over Pontremoli. Pity most of the so-called multimedia material are videos in Italian. Foreign visitors should ask for a discount IMHO

I loved visiting the castle while touring Pontremoli! Our tour guide Marco was so knowledgeable and pleasant, in fact he told us there was also the possibility to sleep there and a week later we came back and stayed the night!!!! One of the best and exciting experiences ever!!!! The rooms were clean and so were the shared bathrooms! We had the keys to the castle since they lock it at 7:30!! It is illuminated so beautifully at night and you are able to explore it all!! This experience is suitable for all ages and we were even allowed to bring our dog! Some rooms fit up to 20 people

The Museo delle Statue Stele Lunigianesi, located within the Castello del Piagnaro, offers a fascinating insight into the enigmatic artistic phenomenon of the Stele Statues. These male and female stone figures, dating back to the fourth and first millennium BC, boast abstract forms that are part of a significant prehistoric European art movement. The museum provides an elegant and evocative setting for these one-dimensional sculptures, which are considered important artifacts from the region's ancient past.
a beautiful museum that really details the origins of the Statue Stele culture. I was impressed by the castle and the way they used the medieval environment to add poetry and depth to the exhibition. Definitely worth visiting if you are interested in prehistorical items and in copper or iron-age cultures.

Very Interesting. I loved it. They have video displays in French, Italian and English and a lot of these wonderful statues. All of this is displayed in a castle that is interesting in and of itself.

The decoration of the curtains inside Saint Maria Del Popolòs Cathedral was exceptional, thanks to the time, patience, and willingness of the Bertolini brothers. Often, people overlook recognizing the deserving contributions made by individuals and instead focus on acknowledging those considered "masters of ceremonies." However, it is important to appreciate and value the efforts put forth by all who have contributed to enhancing the beauty and ambiance of this church.
(Translated by Google) Visited with my husband last week, we loved it. The exterior with the main entrance is quite simple, but as soon as you enter the door you immediately notice the great abundance of decorations, statues, furnishings, religious objects and so on, which make this place truly pleasing to the eye. Beautiful and particular is the reconstruction of the Via Crucis, the work of Mauro Fugacci, donated to this Cathedral at Easter 1999, preserved inside a wooden case.

(Translated by Google) The construction of the cathedral was decreed with a resolution of the General Council of Pontremoli on 7 July 1630 which established the erection of "a sumptuous, noble and capable temple of the people as much as possible (...) in the place where the church of Santa Maria di Piazza is ". Based on a project provided in 1633 by the Cremonese architect Alessandro Capra, the works began in 1636 in the area obtained from the demolition of the ancient oratory of the Madonna del Popolo and other adjacent buildings, and were completed only in 1687. Recognized as an illustrious collegiate church in 1721 with a bull of Innocent III, consecrated by the bishop of Brugnato in 1723, the church was finally built in the cathedral on 4 July 1787 with a bull from Pius VI, at the time of the establishment of the diocese of Pontremoli. In 1988 it became co-cathedral of the diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli. The pipe organ of the co-cathedral was built in 1961 by the Balbiani-Vegezzi Bossi organ building company and expanded in 1977 by the Chichi organ building company. It is located partly on the choir loft on the counter-façade, partly in the two choirs facing each other in the middle of the nave. The instrument, with electric transmission, has three keyboards of 61 notes each and a concave-radial pedal board of 32.

Nestled in the charming town of Pontremoli, Caffè e Pasticceria degli Svizzeri is a delightful spot that beautifully marries tradition with a cozy atmosphere. This historic café boasts stunning Liberty Style decor, complete with original oak paneling and elegant lighting that creates an inviting ambiance. Known for serving the best cappuccino in town, it’s the perfect place to unwind while savoring local delicacies like amor cakes and spongata during your visit.
We were in town for a day. Stumbled upon this Caffè on the Piazza. Had some tables left outside. It was a sunny day, so we took a seat. Our Bulldog was welcome as well. Had some drinks and also the specialty here: the paste "amor". Very nice, crispy and the filling generous. Goes well with coffee. Came back after a walk to grab some more drinks and also to eat some light snacks: one like a mini-pizza with anchovies, the other a small tarte filled with ham. Both delicous. Prices were fair, staff was friendly. It's surely a nice place to grab some drinks and a bite and to enjoy the town views and the Piazza. A comfy spot.

(Translated by Google) Crossing the Magra river across the Cesare Battisti Bridge, we arrive at another small village characterized by the Church of Nostra Donna. The bridge is medieval, like the palace you see hidden by the church, while the oratory was rebuilt after the flood of 1732. The church of Nostra Donna dates back to the 16th century, when the oratory was built, which was the seat of the "Compagnia di Nostra Donna del Castel di Pontremoli", then of the "Società dei Disciplinati della Beata Maria della Neve" and then of the "Confraternità della Concezione di Nostra Woman". With the flood of 1732, the church, located right next to the Magra river, had to be rebuilt and the work was entrusted to Giovan Battista Natali who characterized it for his baroque style in the decoration of the large dome, the apse, the chapels , of the doors and balconies of the organ and the gallery. Inside you can admire pictorial works by Galeotti, behind the first and second altars and by Gherardini, behind the third altar, as well as a precious period organ and sacred vestments from the 1700s.

Torre del Cacciaguerra, also known as Campanone, is a massive bell tower built in 1322 by Castruccio Castracani. Originally named 'looking for a fight,' it later served as a civic tower.

(Translated by Google) The Cacciaguerra tower, known as the Campanone, is located in the historic center of Pontremoli between the Duomo and Repubblica squares. Built in 1322 at the behest of Castruccio Castracani, it was part of a real fortress that separated the city in two, torn by internal struggles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. Until the beginning of the 14th century, the two current squares did not exist, but a large space open towards the Verde stream and closed towards the Magra by the ancient Town Hall. The fortress ran from the banks of the Verde to those of the Magra and was defended by three towers: the current Cacciaguerra tower was the central one, while nothing remains of the one on the Verde unlike the opposite one on the Magra. The curtain had only one communication door corresponding to the current passage between the two central squares, demolished in the middle of the last century. The raising and transformation of the central tower into a bell tower dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to visit the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, a beautiful place of worship along the Via Francigena. Thanks to a dedicated and knowledgeable volunteer, we were able to gain access and receive a thorough explanation of the treasures housed within this Marian sanctuary. The passion and expertise demonstrated by our guide allowed us to fully appreciate the significance of each jewel that adorned this sacred space.
(Translated by Google) A surprise, a church of great importance, along the Via Francigena: a surprise also because it is a little appreciated jewel in the municipality of Pontremoli. It is a sanctuary built on the place where the apparitions of the Virgin to a little girl took place in 1470. It was a place with a notable influx of pilgrims where an important communication route passed between the north of the peninsula and Florence. It has considerable dimensions, with a single nave and a significantly raised presbytery and inside there is a small marble temple by Sansovino (1527) dedicated to the Virgin Annunziata. A true treasure: inside there is a beautiful altar, behind which in a niche (you have to kneel down to see it) there is a 15th century fresco with the scene of the Annunciation, found next to the remains of the ancient Via Francigena. But another precious treasure chest of works of art is found in the sacristy: wardrobes, inlaid wooden benches dating back to 1676 and frescoes from the vault by Francesco Natali, a masterpiece! They give the impression of creating the illusion of space opening beyond the ceiling with extraordinarily nuanced colors. The facade is of excellent workmanship with interventions by the "Comacine masters". Unfortunately this sacred place is owned by the state which is not concerned with preserving this site with the two splendid cloisters of the convent. A real shame! But, with great amazement, I accidentally visited this precious church when a person who doesn't know much about art and history (no less than the director of the Uffizi in Florence) made a thorough visit to this precious place. A highly trained expert (volunteer) also guided us to visit the works. Unforgettable meeting! Indimenticabile incontro! (Doppio)

Medievalis is an enchanting annual festival that takes place in the picturesque town of Pontremoli at the end of August, immersing visitors in a captivating medieval atmosphere. The historic center transforms into a vibrant scene filled with markets and food stalls showcasing the delicious specialties of Lunigiana. As you wander through the streets, you'll encounter costumed characters ranging from valiant knights to whimsical jesters, all contributing to the lively ambiance.
The Feast of Medievalis of Pontremoli of 2023 is indeed at its best. The well organized market with antique pieces, taste giving spices and healing herbs, entertainment points, food junctions, breathtaking shows, dance and music, calm river with its ancient bridges, surrounding mountains with green umbrella, processions representing ancient dress code. (Translated by Google) Honestly, I had high expectations, but I didn't find any great shows, and the only noteworthy performance was a 15-minute medieval reconstruction. It felt more like a market to me, given the number of stalls and, most importantly, all the activities open...nothing special. Personally, I much preferred the Medieval Filetto, with its many interesting shows, including fire-eaters, battles between men-at-arms, flag-throwers, and falconers. Plus, the villagers prepare food for visitors. There's an entrance fee, but it's worth it. Nestled in the charming town of Pontremoli, the Ponte della Crësa is a stunning historical bridge that gracefully spans the Verde River with its four elegant stone arches. Originally constructed in wood back in the 1300s, this picturesque structure has undergone numerous reconstructions due to damage from floods and sieges over the centuries. It serves as one of the main gateways into Pontremoli, particularly for those arriving from Piacenza.

This historic tower, dating back to the 14th century, serves as a prominent symbol of the city. Originally part of a curtain wall built by Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli to separate warring factions in the city, it was later converted into a bell tower in 1578.

We had a great time going down this gorge. Definitely worth a visit! The water is cold, but not freezing. But it is summer right now and 36 degrees outside. There's really no need for a tour guide, you can just drive down the road, follow the signs and you'll find the river. It's well signposted. Follow it upstream and you'll see some great places. Once you get to the waterfall there are 2 more corners to take, that's more or less where it ends. A good idea is to take a waterproof bag for your stuff. Shoes are a good idea too, I did it in slippers which wasn't ideal.
Tom K — Google review
27/9...update.. the river passes a large field that has sheep and horses. It also has two white labradore dogs that are serving as sheepdogs. These dogs might be on the path, or come to check you out once they sense you. One of them is very shouty and will bark at you. If you are nervous with dogs, this might be upsetting. However, we just stay still and the dogs lose interest once they figure out you are not a threat to the sheep, and will leave. Stay calm. Another cool day in 38F Toscana. Leave car on road and walk the 1km in. You can get closer, but it's all rock. Necessary to take river bed in at first but then you can pick up path. Relatively easy in. Children ok. Lots of places /pools along the way to claim for the day.
Paolo ( — Google review
The Gorges of Giaredo is a beautiful and exciting place to visit. The teenagers were busy exploring the place the whole afternoon. Water is slightly cold (just below 20?) but nice for a quick swim with Swedish standards. When entering the area we drove down a private dust road last 500 m. When leaving, the road was blocked by an upset man who pointed out that the road is private. It would of course be great if the municipality could arrange proper access to the area considering there are good directions and road signs where to go. I’m also puzzled why the owner doesn’t pave the waste land and offers parking lots for a few euros. It’s a no brainer in my opinion.
Teitur A — Google review
At some point the signs showing to the gorge disappear and the path goes through a private property. There two sheepdogs started barking and running towards us. Didn’t reach the destination, got really scared, but the valley itself is at least really beautiful..
Helen O — Google review
You can’t access it from the side which google maps suggest - property before the gorge is surrounded with electric fence…
Jakub W — Google review
A family purchased the land and put up “private property” signs everywhere. The main path to get there is now closed to the public. Locals said you can still get there by walking up the riverbed. Very disappointing.
Elizabeth R — Google review
Great location if you are looking for a cool water spot for baby and toddler. There is shade along the river, the water wasn't deep in august. You may want to park at the parking lot instead of along the road, it's easier to get out afterwards. Form the parking lot it's about 10 min walk.
Mikka B — Google review
I have been to waterfalls and hidden places like this before but they came out of a friend's recommendation. Here the comune di Pontremoli actually advertises this place to tourists, however is very awkward to reach as there is no clear path. You will have to cross the river and walk up in the water. The road has crumbled and parts have been bulldozed leaving the place rough and full of debris. There is an adjacent private property, actually only ruins, with nasty DON'T ENTER signs and electrified wire to stop you going through there, we have been actually chased away from the owner, who was watching from the hill. I have seen a foreign couple adventuring there with a baby. To me a place like this should not be advertise to people as they might injure themselves trying to get there. If you eventually get there the canyon is beautiful. But hey it is a hell of a hike.

It is advised to avoid following the directions of Google Maps towards the hilltop and a specific path, as it leads to certain death. Instead, upon reaching Pracciola village, visitors should park near a stream and tourist information sign. They can then proceed by tracing white paint marks on buildings and trees through the village along a mule track, eventually descending onto a single-track path.
Well worth the 40 minute hike in to see falls. Park in village, head towards church to pick up signs for cascate (falls). Once outside of village, path becomes increasingly narrow and is often obstructed by fallen trees. Path also suffers from slides which take away most of path. Note that this is a single person path, with ravine immediately to one side and steep banks on other, so manouvering requires thought. Last part of hike is in the stream, across rocks. If you've the urge to relieve you, or your child, please take your bathroom tissue with you. I know you cannot find a discrete place on this narrow ravine path, but it is very off-putting to see used toilet tissue along the path. You cart it away for your dogs, so do the same for your waste.

Do not follow google maps to the top of the hill and a path ...its leads to certain death. When you reach Pracciola village park on the bend you will see a stream and a tourist info sign. Follow the white paint marks on buildings trees through the village along the mule track then down on the single track path. It takes 30 mins to get to the waterfall on some narrow paths and along the riverbed with its large uneven boulders.l. Probably not suitable for those with bad mobility problems nor young kids who can walk themselves...its probably too far/dangerous. The water in the cascata is really quite cold. Get there early am so the sun is on the pool. By early afternoon because of the steep sides the pool is in shade and not quite as magical.

(Translated by Google) I corrected the name to the real name.... Cascate del Piscio. Piscio waterfalls and Colombara bridge can be done in a single route. The route is divided into two parts. The first part is the part that reaches the Colombaia bridge, this part is very short and very pretty, the bridge has been recently restored and next to it there is now a fountain, we decided to go down and also see the waterfall from under the bridge be careful if you do it, the route is not the best maintained. The second part is the main one that pushed us to get here, starting from the village of Pancocchia we decided to take the path that led to the Piscio waterfalls. The path is very simple and linear, difficult to miss the only crossroads that presents itself it is well marked and you have to turn left, in a couple of places the path has small landslides but nothing that cannot be overcome. During the route to the waterfall you also pass near another waterfall that I would have liked to visit but the weather wasn't in very good shape and this time I decided to move on as the descent would have been not exactly orthodox once you reached the waterfalls, there are numerous places where we can sit and take a bath is a must as the water is crystal clear and the waterfalls are wonderful, we will definitely return to this place.

Nestled in the charming town of Pietrasanta, Big Bench #109 is a delightful spot that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This oversized bench, part of a larger project celebrating unique seating around Italy, boasts a lovely yet slightly weathered color that adds to its charm. A short 10-minute hike from the main square leads you to this picturesque vantage point near an ancient fortress.
A steep ascend well worth the effort!

Overtourism, soft tourism or no tourist at all? Unfortunately, dirty place with spectacular view…

(Translated by Google) Bench forming part of the big bench project, a little old in need of repainting, pleasant and delicate color on a spectacular city panorama of Pietrasanta. It can be reached on foot in a short 10.mijuto climb towards the fortress, from the main square of Pietrasanta. You can park in the town with a free short-term stay of 1 hour or for a fee. Attention, no yellow lines, and always be vigilant in checking the town. Unfortunately, the restaurant that places the stamp was closed at 11 in the morning, it would be advisable to provide the stamp to the tourist office opposite, which has more acceptable opening hours.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful like all the big Benches. The view is worth it. It could use a bit of renovation and a bit of cleaner maintenance.
