Barrio de Cuevas, also known as the cave quarter, is a major tourist attraction in Guadix. It comprises around 2000 caves, all of which are inhabited, offering a unique living experience. The neighborhood provides stunning views and beautiful rock formations at its edges. Some of the caves can be visited and it's recommended for a day trip with great weather.
Well worth a visit. Something unique to see in Europe. Some stunning views. Taking the tourist train is almost a must though (6€ per person). Walking around the cathedral and castle in Guadix is great bonus to any visit

My Fiancé and I went to visit Gaudix. It’s a very interesting town. There’s a barrio where people live underground in stuco walled houses built in to the local mountains. If you’re planning on visiting I’d recommend Casa Jose. He’s a very friendly guy who welcomes visitors in to his home with open arms. It’s free of charge but you can give him a donation if you please. We would recommend visiting the area but be weary of visiting other houses in this area. We were talking to one of the locals as we were trying to get directions to the mirador. He then wanted to invite us in to his house so we accepted. We thought he was doing it out of generosity but after he showed us around he was really adamant about us giving him money. We first thought it was a bit strange because he was very friendly at first. Then he kept asking for more and more money. We ended up playing him 10 euros. So we would recommend just visiting the museum, the barrio, casa de Jose, and the mirador there. We would recommend staying away from the smaller local streets. It’s okay to walk or drive around there but we would recommend just visiting the area near the church and school.

Cueva Museo de Alfarería La Alcazaba is a unique attraction located in an Arab cave beneath the Alcazaba de Guadix, dating back to the year 1400. This pottery museum showcases a well of Arabesque construction and two jars from the same period in its basement.

In addition, we can also see carved reliefs representing the different cultures that have passed through Guadix since 3000 BC. until today. Mirador de la Magdalena is a free and accessible viewpoint in Guadix, offering stunning panoramic views of the city and its surrounding mountains. It provides a great vantage point to admire iconic landmarks such as the Cathedral of La Encarnacion, the Alcazaba, and the Church of La Magdalena. The viewpoint is located on one of Guadix's characteristic cave houses, adding to its unique charm.
Walking around this area is recommended. You can drive quite high up and then strolling around the streets here feels quite special
Nativa F — Google review
During a recent family trip, we decided to visit Mirador de la Magdalena, drawn by the promise of breathtaking views we had seen in countless photos. And indeed, once we reached the top, the panorama did not disappoint — sweeping landscapes unfolded in every direction, offering a perfect moment to pause and take in the beauty of nature. However, the journey to the viewpoint left much to be desired. As we made our way up, we passed by numerous abandoned buildings, many of which were in disrepair. The sight of these empty structures, some looking dangerously unstable, created an unsettling atmosphere. At times, it even felt unsafe, especially while traveling with children. While the final view was certainly rewarding, the path leading up to it made the experience less enjoyable than we had hoped. A little more maintenance and safety measures could turn this into a truly outstanding destination. Until then, visitors should approach with a bit of caution — and perhaps adjust their expectations accordingly.

The Teatro Romano in Guadix, dating back to the 1st century AD, was unexpectedly discovered during excavations for an underground parking lot near the Cathedral. Covering over 1000 square meters, it includes remnants of noble houses and stables. Although not fully excavated, it is one of the largest preserved theaters in Andalusia. The monument's condition is good but needs more recognition. Visitors can experience its former glory through virtual reality glasses available at the tourist office.

La Alcazaba, a chicken restaurant, is highly recommended for its exceptional food and pleasant ambiance. Customers have the option to dine in or take away their delicious meals. The attentive staff provides great service and takes pride in offering charcoal-grilled chicken that is truly flavorful, unlike fried alternatives. Additionally, the establishment offers breathtaking views that enhance the dining experience. La Alcazaba is known for its high-quality cuisine prepared by Miguel and his dedicated team.

The Alcazaba of Guadix, a hilltop Moorish fortress, played a significant role as a trading station during the Arab reign. Today, it offers stunning views of the Barrio de las Cuevas, known for its cave dwellings and is a major tourist attraction in Guadix. The 16th-century Cathedral nearby with its church tower that was once a minaret adds to the intriguing sight.

(Translated by Google) Diary of a curious person. Thursday, March 2, 2023, 5:15 p.m. Next to the door we find an informative caption in which we can read: "In this same location there was, in Islamic Guadix, a door called the Bib-Bazamarín or second Baza Door, as it was at the exit of the suburb towards the neighboring city. In the 16th century this other one was built, already with a more political and decorative character than military, but it did not lack its corresponding closing portal, as witnessed by the set holes in the doors in the interior. In the following centuries it underwent different restorations... inside there is a small chapel, enabled in 1593... It is at that time when it acquired its current name. On the façade it displays the imperial coat of arms of Charles V, that of the city and that of the mayor Pedro Chacón... The balcony of the interior façade would serve on designated days to celebrate public mass..."

The Cueva Museo Centro de Interpretación Cuevas de Guadix, located opposite the church of San Miguel, offers a fascinating glimpse into troglodyte life. The museum showcases the evolution of cave dwellings and provides insight into how people lived in these unique homes. Visitors can explore a fully functioning cave house and learn about its construction through informative guided tours and film presentations. With its cool environment in summer and cozy fireplace in winter, it's an intriguing place to experience.
Just such a lovely place to stay, in summer it will be so cool as it is mainly under the earth and in winter there is a cosy fireplace. Can sleep 10, but it was €32 for two people, so very reasonable. Fully functioning kitchen, two bathrooms, washing machine, outdoor bbq, great wifi and tv. Good location, short walk to heart of town & very clean. The host was super welcoming!

A great way to see what life would have been like in a cave house in times gone bye. The guide was very pleasant and informative, we were the first visitors of the day so she let us open the wooden door to the cave house with a very big key, after initially explaining everything about cave life she then spent time with us answering any questions we had before we continued on to the film show which explained all about how the caves are constructed. We then had lots of time to wander around all the rooms at our leisure which was fantastic . A place you must visit if you are in Guadix .

I highly recommend visiting 'La Bodeguilla' in Guadix. Their selection of sweet wines, vermut, and local-style tapas and dishes is worth trying. The staff is extremely kind and always smiling. The owner speaks excellent English and is very helpful. This bistro offers a brilliant place to enjoy a drink, which comes with complimentary tapas. It's an authentic Spanish bodega that's popular among locals, offering a good variety of drinks and food options.

The top bell towers offer spectacular views of the town and the nearby Alcazaba de Guadix. Visitors recommend exploring the troglodyte caves in use around the area. The cathedral's beautiful architecture stands out against a backdrop of snowy peaks, and its interior is described as amazing.
Surprising. Interesting cathedral with a mix of Roman and Baroque architecture. The bell tower is worth the hike, but be sure you are up for it: narrow stairs low ceilings. Be prepared.

Great visit with helpful staff Michelle spoke Spanish and English. Up the steps of 100 or more to the bell tower. Super view of the bells and view across the city.

The Cathedral of Guadix is truly amazing and it will cost you 5 euros, but worth it! The views from the top bell towers are spectacular and you can see the main road that leads in and out of town. The Alacazaba de Guadix is not far from here and a view of it can also be seen from the top of the bell towers. I highly recommend visiting along with walking around to see the troglodyte caves that are still in use.

Outrageous! €7 entry just for the cathedral – everything else like the tower and the entire surrounding area was closed. No info at the entrance, no warning when buying the ticket, just take the money and that's it. To me, this is nothing but a tourist scam. I genuinely feel ripped off.

Iglesia de Santiago is an exceptional temple built during the Christian period of the third Kingdom of Granada, showcasing a blend of Granada Mudejar style with Gothic and Renaissance elements. The church features a magnificent Renaissance doorway, impressive Mudejar armor, and a remarkable four-sphere Renaissance vault made of wood. Unfortunately, much of its original artwork was destroyed or stolen during the civil war by intolerant groups.

(Translated by Google) It's always difficult to capture in photos the beauty of the panorama that unfolds before our eyes when we climb to a lookout point. The viewpoint of Padre Pedro Poveda, a Spanish priest and educator (since canonized) who lived here in the early 20th century, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the troglodyte neighborhood and its characteristic collection of white chimneys. In the distance, you can admire the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which gives this little corner of Andalusia the feel of a Spaghetti Western (or rather, Paella). Closer up, you can enjoy a superb view of the Cathedral of the Incarnation and the ancient Alcazaba (a Muslim citadel that was unfortunately closed for renovations in the summer of 2025). Moreover, access is quite easy, so it would be a shame not to take a look if you're in this beautiful neighborhood of Guadix. Cueva de José is a charming cave house with a lovely outside terrace and fully equipped rooms resembling a normal house. The main bedroom showcases traditional Spanish costumes, reflecting Jose's pride in his home and culture. Visitors are treated generously without any obligation to make payments, allowing them to leave or purchase souvenirs at their discretion. Additionally, the viewing point on the terrain above the cave offers breathtaking views of the town and the Nevada mountains.
My fiancé and I really enjoyed visiting José’s house in barrio de Cuevas in Gaudix. He was very friendly and invited us to come to his house to look around with no charge. (You can donate if you want but it’s not required.) His house is very spacious and shows us how to local residence live, how their houses are built in to the local mountains, and he even has a small souvenir shop with local wine and honey! I would highly recommend paying him a visit if you’re in the area.

In the entrance, he has some souvenir items; some are beautiful and, considering the work involved, very well priced. In my case, I bought the Accitana jug, a traditional jug that grooms gave to their brides. It's beautifully crafted and very affordable. But, focusing on the important things, it's a magical place that not only transports you back in time but also allows you to imagine life in a cave and understand that it's not as different as it seems. Over the Easter holiday, my family and I visited Mirador del Cerro de la Bala, a destination I had long anticipated after seeing its breathtaking scenery featured in a documentary. With high expectations, we made the journey to the summit, eager to witness its beauty firsthand. At first, the experience did not disappoint. The natural landscape was stunning, with sweeping views that immediately reminded me of the enchanting village of Göreme in Cappadocia, Turkey. The rocky formations and dramatic surroundings created a unique and captivating atmosphere. The climb itself was manageable for all ages, and the cool Easter breeze added to the charm of the visit. However, once we reached the top, our excitement was tempered by some unfortunate realities. Scattered trash, neglected abandoned houses, and a general lack of maintenance marred what could have been a truly world-class viewpoint. It was disheartening to see such a naturally beautiful place lose some of its magic due to human carelessness. With proper preservation efforts and thoughtful development, Mirador del Cerro de la Bala has the potential to become one of the region’s standout attractions — a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide. The bones of greatness are all there; it simply needs the respect and attention it deserves. Despite the visible issues, the unforgettable scenery and the overall experience still made the trip worthwhile. I sincerely hope that future visitors will be able to enjoy this incredible place in a better state.

The view is good and perhaps subjectively better than the one closer to the interpretation center. The downside, however, is that this place is not well sign-posted so be prepared to spend a little more time than necessary to find it hence the 3-star I having rating it. Amazing views, but the way to get here is crazy ! As i seen one comment, " Google maps will drive you to death." In my opinion, beter take a longer but safer route through Paulenca. Good spot for campers if you want silent night.

“Beautiful viewpoint with breathtaking views, but the road to get there is difficult to access by car and it’s often very windy. Not recommended for people with fear of heights or who dislike adventurous roads.”
Berber O — Google review
An excellent viewpoint with stunning scenery! Absolutely worth a visit if you’re nearby. I don’t know what all the reviews saying treacherous, bad, or “adventurous” roads are talking about. All the roads there are perfectly fine. The road from Paulenca is about 3km of dirt road and a very easy drive. The road from Beas de Gaudix is a paved (albeit steep) road, which has room to pass oncoming vehicles if needed for most of the drive up/down. Also, despite what Google Maps says, you can drive down from the Mirador to Beas de Gaudix.
