The grill Restaurante El Lagar de San Vicente is highly recommended for its sensational lamb and delicious asparagus scramble. The staff is professional and friendly, with special thanks to Alejandro for his helpful advice and attention. This classic establishment in Penafiel is housed in an old wine cellar or "lagar," evident from the ancient dam at the entrance. It offers a fantastic dining experience with a wide selection of food and wine that is unmatched.

I must confess that I was more impressed with the Plaza del Coso than with the plaza in Chincon. The Easter setup transported me back to medieval Spain, creating an amazing atmosphere. Additionally, the view of the majestic castle overlooking the village from the hill was breathtaking. It's important to note that credit cards are not accepted at the bars in this plaza, so it's advisable to have cash on hand.
Although I find bullfighting objectionable, I must admit that the architecture of this historic plaza is truly breathtaking. Each building has a unique and distinct character, with doorways adorned with protective bull bars and narrow shelters providing refuge from the bulls, all overseen by the town's magnificent hilltop castle.
Fletch U — Google review
I have to be honest and admit that I was more impressed with this plaza than with the one in Chincon. Given the whole setup for Easter, I genuinely felt transported back to medieval Spain. The ambience was awesome, not to mention the view of the majestic castle towering over the village from up on the hill. A word of caution: the bars in the plaza do accept credit cards so make sure that you have cash on hand.
Linton N — Google review
Do not fail to visit this if you visit Pinafiel. The bull ring, surrounded by the most remarkable buildings. And a lovely bar which does not capitalise on its setting by charging excessively.
Duncan P — Google review
Incredible. The bull ring is surrounded by amazing houses. Easy to miss the gate!
Janice B — Google review
I do not know why this shows the plaza is closed, but it is open for 24 hours and no tickets etc needed.
Ozgur A — Google review
Peñafiel is a nice town just off the Duero river, but in the wine region. The plaza is very old and the location of bull fighting. I didn't go to the latter, but the venue was interesting. The castle is massive!
Colin W — Google review
Beautiful, oldest bullfighting ring in Spain and in square shape. Well worth the visit
Eduardo S — Google review
In many guide books this fantastic Plaza is referred to as the Plaza Major. Beware of this as there is a plaza mayor in Peñafiel about 300m from this one. This place is worth going to as it’s wonderful. You can walk around looking at all the old wood structure houses and imagine the years that have passed and all the other people that have done the same thing

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Peñafiel Castle, located in Valladolid, is a captivating hilltop fortress offering breathtaking views and guided tours. The castle was not meant for permanent residence but served as a refuge during threats and for visiting noblemen. A 40-minute guided tour, available only in Spanish, provides an intriguing insight into the castle's history. Additionally, the castle houses the Provincial Wine Museum, showcasing the region's rich winemaking tradition.
Fascinating castle and Museum of Wine. Well worth the guided tour, especially if you speak Spanish, but the handheld audio guides were very good. The museum is excellent and although information is only in Spanish, it isn't too difficult to work out most of the information.
David R — Google review
The wine museum was genuinely interesting to visit, and the entrance is free, which is a nice bonus. The castle can only be visited with a guided tour, which might be a plus for those who enjoy detailed explanations. Personally, I would have preferred to explore it on my own. The view from the top platform of the castle is beautiful, but inside there isn’t much to see, as none of the original interiors have been preserved.
Google review
Nice visit to the castle. Couldn't understand much as the guide was talking really fast. But is is an nice sight to behold and well worth a visit
Bennie B — Google review
Beautiful castle, build like a ship with a long and impressive history There are also great views of the area from the top of it Check the opening time, we got there at around 13:30 but it closes at 14:00 so we couldn’t go in so we came back after 16:00 when they opens up again The wine museum is worthwhile a visit if anything for the smelling exercise you can do inside
Ronnen B — Google review
You can only visit as part of a guided tour in Spanish. So a wasted journey. Anyway, the castle looks better when seen from the town We don't do guided tours unless it's somewhere very very special like the Altamira Caves
Anonguiri — Google review
Beautiful looking castle structure with great views. I did not go in.
Raymond A — Google review
Wonderful views from a castle steeped in Spanish history. Long walk up steep road to access, but plenty of parking if driving at the top. €6.20 ticket for adult guided tour and entry to the wine museum.
Keith S — Google review
The castle itself is wonderful and impressive, however, it turned out to be a wine tour/museum, so the only way to see the inside is on a wine tour. You cannot roam by yourself, which was a disappointment. Still feel the "touch of history" by visiting

Bodegas Protos is a fantastic winery that offers an amazing tour experience. Visitors are impressed by the knowledgeable and friendly guides who provide insights into the wine-making process and the history of the bodega. The effort and history behind Protos wines are well presented, making it a must-see for wine enthusiasts. The tour provides a great understanding of Ribera del Duero wines, with excellent tasting experiences at the end.
What a fantastic Bodega, one of the best I’ve ever visited. Thanks so much Irene for your knowledge about the place, the wine and the history of this amazing Bodega. Irene was wonderful, nice and with a fantastic sense of humour. Loved this place. I booked this for my partner’s birthday and he loved it.
Coquito R — Google review
We visited Bodegas Protos for a tour, and while the winery itself is undeniably beautiful, it was our least favorite experience in the region. The atmosphere felt quite commercial, which isn’t really our style—we tend to prefer smaller, family-run wineries with a more intimate feel. It was also the only winery we visited that didn’t seem particularly kid-friendly, which made the visit a bit less enjoyable for our family. While it may appeal to those looking for a more polished, large-scale operation, it just wasn’t the right fit for us.
Jessica F — Google review
Nice place to visit, where I visit by tour. Get wine testing and also free wine glass. The tour guide explained really well
Helbert T — Google review
Dear Protos. You have been my favourite brand for years. Therefore I bought a private tour to Your winery today. Unfortunately, I’ve also asked my private guide to buy a bottle of wine, while waiting a hour before. Then, we’ve arrived. Yes, we’ve had a half of bottle unconsumed. And that is it. We left it inside, with 2 glasses. Was it a reason to send us outside, calling police? I think no. I’ve managed to calm all emotions down, but it’s something I don’t have to do during my time, being at holidays. Therefore I ask for apology from Your command in front of me, That was really bad behaviour. BRDS, DMITRI
Gourmandia L — Google review
We took a tour that lasted about an hour and 15 minutes, followed by a wine tasting. The tour guides where extremely knowledgeable and the ambience was phenomenal. Definitely worth a stop.
Kassim C — Google review
Fine winery with a lot of history in their wheels. We booked the tour + wine tasting at the end. I would recommend the cellar to update the initial phase with all the audiovisual contents, they look old fashioned and kind of boring. The guides were OK, the tasting was OK, nothing out of the blue for such an iconic cellar. They should probably revamp and rethink the process, nothing to complain, but living in 2023 it's good to be updated with the time being.
R E — Google review
Bodegas protons good history behind and very well presented, they do millions of litres wine there … you can understand where wines makers will bring the wines in the future

The visit to Pago de Carraovejas was an unforgettable and remarkable experience. The entire journey was a sensory overload, both physically and emotionally, with the vibrant colors of the building and the delightful taste of their wine. The vineyard tour was both entertaining and informative, accompanied by an exceptional on-site restaurant. It's hard to fathom the intensity of this experience until you have lived it yourself. Hopefully, one can have the pleasure of reliving this extraordinary adventure in the near future.
Beautiful bodega and amazing gastro/wine experience. Tried 9 of their wines paired with the food. Funny fact was that they started as a restaurant and needed wine to pair with their food!
Scotty E — Google review
I have visited a few wineries and Pago de Carraovejas was by far the best, it’s mostly because the quality of the wine was met with an equivalent quality of the food making it a culinary delight We started with looking at the vines (I thought we had a short time around the vines compared to other tours) and continued through every step of the wine making process, and given that the winery focuses on quality in everything they do, it was interesting to hear about how they reduce the grapes on the vines and how a gravity method allow them to promise the quality - we’ve even gone to see the labelling and storage of the bottles which you don’t always see I can’t finish this review without covering the wines and food, we tried 7 different wines and not to make it a too demanding, you try 2 wines in a barrel room during the visit and the rest at the end, each wine was accompanied with a tapas dish cooked in their Michelin star kitchen - and each sip of the wine of bite of the food was nothing short of amazing We were originally concerned that a visit that starts at 10am is too early but they’ve done it just right and it was an amazing experience I did want to buy a wine bottle to go but as a tourist I can only take a small Humber and they didn’t sell their most famous wine in less than a pack of 3, I did but it at the end at a wine store So if you like wines and love good food, do yourself a favour and don’t miss the opportunity to visit Pago de Carraovejas
Ronnen B — Google review
A must visit if you are coming to Rebera del duero. We did the Gran cruz tour, which is the most expensive at €135 per person, but it definitely worth it. 7 incredibly wines paired with 7 individual dishes from the winery's Michelin star restaurant.
Iestyn S — Google review
I could not find anything negative about this experience even if I tried hard. Beautiful architecture, exquisit guest treatment and deeply interesting tour of the winery. I thought I knew quite some things about wine and I left the place knowing twice as many. The story, the place, the process and of course the tasting at the end make the experience totally worth its price. We went for the 2h15 experience with 4 wines and 4 dishes at the end and we will most definitely come back for the 3h00 experience with 7 wines. You will probably come by car, so allow some time to sober up after the experience by taking a stroll or come and go by cab (not a lot of them available in Peñafiel, the closest village).
Frankie G — Google review
We have purchased The grand Crus of Alma when we visited the winery in the Ribera valley. The tour and the tasting of 7 wines was an amazing and unique experience. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the all aspects of the wine business but also make our tasting experience unforgettable. Highly recommend visiting when in the area. It’s well worth it.
Volhs S — Google review
100% recommended! The production in detail explained, they made us try several wines from their new projects and the classic ones. We highly recommend to visit them!
Ana P — Google review
Apart from the grumpy and careless ladies who were checking us in, the visit “Grand Crus of Alma” was excellent. The winery is gorgeous inside out, an architectural masterpiece. The tour guide (Indre) was very knowledgeable, wines and food pairings were delicious. Of course, they don’t leave the bottles with you to finish them off (like Emilio Moro does) but perhaps it’s for the best, because otherwise we would never leave the place. My only unfulfilled wish was a cup of coffee at the end, which they did not have. But again, this is a high-end winery and their house - their rules. Thank you!

Fantastic tour by Imdre who is so knowledgeable about the history of the winery and the winemaking process. Tasted 8 great wines and took home the amazing g El Anejon! A must visit in Ribera del Duero.

Museo del Vino in Penafiel is a highly recommended visit, especially if you're in the beautiful town. The museum offers an enjoyable and educational experience, with well-set up interactive displays and plenty of information about wine. It's located at the entrance of the castle, making it convenient to access. Visitors also praise the guided tours of the castle and its spectacular wax figures. Overall, it's a must-visit for wine enthusiasts and those looking to learn more about this beloved beverage.
We did the Cata de vino, visita al Museo y al Castilo. I really loved the wine tasting with the castle’s sommelier. Although my Spanish is rudimentary, my wine knowledge is pretty solid, so I got a lot out of the experience. The sommelier is an enthusiastic and charismatic presenter.
Richard P — Google review
My partner and I only wanted to look around the castle on our own, but we had to do a paid tour in order to do so. The guide was good and insightful. To be honest the castle is better to look at from a far. You are not missing anything.

Bodegas Peñafalcón SL offers an amazing experience for wine enthusiasts. Visitors praise the impeccable attention and friendly responses from David, who made the wine tasting not only educational but also fun. The family-owned winery provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making guests feel like part of the family. The owner's passion and knowledge of wine are captivating, providing a deep understanding of the winemaking process.
This was our third visit to Ribera del Duero, and our first time at Bodegas Peñafalcon. We expected the typical talk and tour of the bodega, but we were taken off guard by the exceptional presentation at the wine museum by David. He took his time to explain everything we were seeing. We were fortunate to have Casimiro, the owner of the Bodega, conduct the tasting, his immense passion and knowledge of wine were so captivating that we found ourselves craving more and more information. Their wines are truly spectacular; they are an exquisite blend carefully aged to perfection. In fact, all three wines we tasted were gold to the palate. We brought home two boxes of Gran Reserva 2007 and eagerly anticipate returning for more. I highly recommend Bodegas Peñafalcon. If you’re a Ribera del Duero wine lover, it’s a must-visit. Salud to María José, David, and Casimiro! You made our trip unforgettable!
Sandri P — Google review
Perhaps the best wine in Ribera if not Spain. Casimiro and his whole family are super welcoming. Must visit!

Great wine, hospitality and tasting with Maria Jose, Casemiro and David. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon in the midst of harvest and they went out of their way to accommodate us. We left with a couple of their best bottles 👌

Excellent experience with cosy ambiance, great attention from host & extremely elegant wine. We loved David’s detailed explanation about the bodega & the wine tasting. Very recommended to visit!
Solange M — Google review
Amazing tour of this family run estate of the Ribera del Duero, I didn't really know what to expect as I didn't know their wines. We had decided to go with my wife to Penafiel at the last minute and I randomly called a few estates the day before. By calling Peñafalcón, I had María José Arranz on the phone, the wife of the director Casimiro Marcos, and to my surprise she spoke French, we agreed on an appointment and the next day we were able to visit the cellar. The visit was absolutely incredible and was organized by the son of the owners, David. The origins of the winery go back to the ancestors of the current owners, who made their wine in the old wineries, which date back to the 17th century. Peñafalcón, which was the name of the town of Penafiel in the 11th century. I really appreciate their philosophy and their approach to wine, everything is done by hand, no herbicides or pesticides are used. The wines are made with a very strict selection of grapes and they proceed to a very long aging in barrels which as a result gives absolutely remarkable wines. We tasted 3 wines which were all absolutely fabulous (100% Tempranillo), Peñafalcón Vendimia Seleccionada 5 años barrica 2009, Peñafalcón Gran Reserva 5 años barrica 2007 Peñafalcón Siglo XI Gran Reserva 2006, aged 60 months in barrel. I was stunned by the level of these wines, combining power, elegance, a beautiful mineral structure, melted tannins, with very concentrated aromas of jammy black fruits, spices and tertiary aromas. You REALLY need to go there if you ever go to Penafiel, it worth every penny. Thank you, David, for the incredible visit and for your warm and passionate welcome.

Bodega Convento de Oreja S.L. is an impressive destination for those seeking to comprehend the art of winemaking. The entire team at this winery guides visitors along the journey of grapes, starting from the vine itself and culminating in the bottle. When grape picking season arrives, guests have the opportunity to pluck grapes from the vines and savor their initial taste as freshly pressed juice. This immersive encounter cannot be adequately described - it must be experienced firsthand.
We came in for a educational tour and also for wine tasting of their 4 red wines. The educational part was the best as we learned things never told before. Every wine was outstanding. Please visit this family and vegan winery. Will return any time we are in Spain.

It's like you are part of the family. Excellent tour a d excellent wine.

Visiting Convento Oreja winery became very quickly our highlight during our tour around La Ribera del Duero. I contacted Antonio using the email address on their website requesting a guided visit with tasting for the October bank holiday weekend and he replied quickly and providing all necessary info and payment was done on arrival. The visit and tasting went for under 2 hours and run smoothly mainly due to Antonio’s pleasant nature and his passion to show the work he has put into his business for the last 20 years. The expertise and pride that shows when the owner of a small winery shows you around his own place is incomparable to any other given visit to one of the big famous wineries where you are shown by a guide and the actual focus of the visit is turned to a fancy building or a popular brand. Our visit with Antonio, was private, intimate and felt genuinely special. He adapted to our interest and replied to all of our questions sometimes more related to daily life around this part of the world and day to day business than to the production of the product itself. The surroundings are beautiful so we had great photo opportunities and Antonio invited us to try some of the local cheese. What else could you ask for? 10 out of 10. Extremely happy we found you Convento Oreja!

Thank you for the amazing experience! This is what you get when passion and dedication come together. The owner gave us a very informative and enjoyable tour of the whole place - could not have been better!

Antes amazing place to visit to truly understand whow wine is made. The whole winery team leads you through the path of the grape, from the plant it self to the bottle. During the grape picking season you'll be able to pick the grapes from the plant and taste it's first flavor as a mosto (juice directly from the harvest). An experience that most be lived...not told.

Cepa 21 was a very enjoyable Enotour. From the moment we arrived for our scheduled tour, Ms. Iciar Martin, received us with a very warm welcome. Cepa 21 was beautiful from the gate entrance in. The building is simply spectacular. We received a story about the owners family and the charity foundations they are involved in. Later we toured the wineries different lots, lots have different names. After the tour was complete, Iciar delighted us with a tasting of all the wines produced at CEPA 21, as well as some “tapas” to savor the excellent wines. The charm and presentation at Cepa 21 made this our best Enotour to date.

An amazing experience in an amazing bodega, with truely memorable wines. A modern bodega, owned by an experienced family of vinters, this bodega produces wines which explain why Ribero del Duero is one of the favoured wine producing areas for wine lovers. Laura, our guide, was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions, taking great care of us both during the cycle ride in the vineyards as well as at the tasting. An experience not be be missed.

Visit included in the Peñafiel tourist card. They give you a pasta and a wine. What more could you ask for for so little money. The card currently costs 5 euros and includes 5 visits as well as a 50% discount on the visit to the Castle. (Original) Excelentes actores amenizan la visita. (Translated by Google) We bought the pass that includes several Peñafiel monuments, and the house is included. I can't attach photos of the interior because they warn you at the entrance not to photograph or film. Mariano and Tomasa's lively dramatization faithfully reproduces the lifestyle and Castilian housing of the early 20th century. We were a group of mixed ages, and both my 85-year-old mother and my 10- and 12-year-old children enjoyed it—my mother for her childhood memories, and the children because they learned. You must book at the tourist office. Highly recommended. Muchas recomendable

The preservation of the Convento de San Pablo deserves much praise and assistance. It is truly remarkable that such an ancient temple is so impeccably maintained. This architectural gem, showcasing a blend of Mudejar and Gothic styles, serves as both a Church and Convent, though only the former is accessible. Its exterior is breathtaking, while its interior is equally awe-inspiring. A must-see attraction for all visitors to Penafiel with an appreciation for artistry and history.
This is both a Church and a Convent but only the church is accessible. It is a marvellous example of Mudejar and Gothic architecture in combination. Wonderful to look at from the outside and no less impressive on the inside. Not to be missed.

(Translated by Google) Peñafiel is a small town that is worth visiting calmly, a town that has played a great role in the history of Spain. Here, for example, Carlos of Navarra, prince of Viana, was born, son of Blanca I of Navarra and Juan II of Aragón and, therefore, half-brother of Ferdinand the Catholic. Carlos de Viana was, therefore, the natural heir to the Crowns of Navarra and Aragon. In Peñafiel you can also see some of the best wine cellars in Rueda, one of the oldest bullrings in Spain or important monuments, such as its castle or the church of San Pablo, both in an excellent state of conservation. The conventual church of San Pablo was ordered to be built in 1324 by the infante Don Juan Manuel, grandson of Fernando III and nephew of Alfonso X El Sabio. The convent was built on an old castle that had been built by King Alfonso X at the end of the 13th century and which was destroyed by a fire at the beginning of the 14th century. Don Juan Manuel was Prince of Villena and Lord of Peñafiel, in addition to being an important writer in the Spanish language who left various writings on chivalric conduct or history, his best-known work being 'The Count Lucanor'. He ordered the construction of a convent of Dominican monks with the idea of building a funerary chapel inside, in which he would be buried after his death. It is a large church, with three naves and a polygonal apse, built with walls and basement of regular granite ashlars. It stands out, especially, for its magnificent and exuberant apse built in brick with Mudejar arches on arches and windows in the shape of lobed horseshoe arches open in the buttresses, following the classic model of the Mudejar of Castile, not as profusely decorated as the Aragonese Mudejar. Inside the church, it is worth highlighting the funerary chapel of the Manuel family, descendants of King Ferdinand III of Castile and León. This chapel was ordered to be built in 1536, two centuries after the death of Don Juan Manuel, by his great-grandson. The chapel is in the Plateresque style, which already reveals the aesthetics of the Renaissance style, decorated with beautiful plasterwork with various heraldic shields that give majesty to the whole. The chapel is located next to the main altar with a recumbent statue of Don Juan Manuel himself on a large stone urn. The complex presents as its central motif a Gothic tracery window framed by two pilasters and an arch. On the sides there are two coats of arms of the Manuel family. Admission to the church is free, although always respecting the mass schedules and the people who attend to pray. There is the possibility of a guided tour for 1.50 euros/pax, which is paid at the tourist office in the nearby Plaza del Coso. There is also a combined guided tour of this church and the Plaza del Coso with a cost of 3 euros/pax. The convent church was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1931. A unique jewel of Mudejar Gothic that is well worth visiting in peace.

Ten minutes by car from Penafiel at Padilla de Duero. A remarkable site where cremated remains have been located beneath simple headstones. Many information boards , albeit solely in Spanish. Surrounded by wonderful countryside. In June the poppies are simply a delight. Thousands of them in the burial zone and around. In fact everywhere in this area. The site is the more moving in that there are interred here the remains of local people so that it serves as a necropolis over 24 centuries.

Amazing - Definitely a must do ! We called to get a guided tour of the place - 2 steps : 1/ A live museum with incredible master pieces found by the archaeologists since 1980s (beginning of excavations) in the graves (jewelry, jar, toys, bones etc) . Very useful to get the explanations from the guide to understand the context of each piece. 2/ Visit of the necropolis were more than 400 graves were found, excavations are still ongoing. The work performed by Carlos Sanz and his team is crazy, what a life work to reach such a result and explain it so clearly to visitors like us. THANKS A LOT for the visit, we are now familiar with our ancestors, the "Vaccaei" (Pre Roman people who lived here 4 centuries Before Christ) ! See you soon ;)

I was lucky enough to be taken around the factory by Gabriel, despite them being busy with the bottling of their wine. They demonstrated why their wine is so good; the attention to detail is amazing. We were lucky enough to take some of their wine home, which we look forward to drinking.

(Translated by Google) Tomás and family's winery is, for true wine lovers, a jewel in the heart of Ribera del Duero. My favorites are the white from 2018 and the 3rd year red from 2019. A true enjoyment for the palate that, without a doubt, continues to grow in terms of quality with each vintage.

(Translated by Google) Very nice, they don't make visits, and they are in a polygon in Peñafiel. We discovered one of their wines at dinner in a restaurant in Peñafiel. Asking the sommelier, he told us that the winery was very close and that if we went closer we could still buy it. We went before leaving Peñafiel and bought their white and their 3rd year red.. Impressive discovery... of everything I have tried in 2 days in Ribera del Duero the best, I also drank a 5 year old bottle which was sold out in the winery and it is a wine to enjoy.

(Translated by Google) The word that best defines Tomás Postigo wines is distinction. It is not the wine you drink when you want to drink wine, but when you want to drink a very good wine. I am delighted with all their broths, but the one you see in the image is a personal weakness.

(Translated by Google) A museum worth seeing whether you are a believer or not. The pieces are true works of art, so much so that there are some that are not there because they are on loan for religious services. I loved it because it allowed me to see sacred works outside the liturgical environment, which makes them a way to understand more works of art without the condition of a temple. Highly recommended museum and the price is very affordable (Original) Un museo digno de ver seas o no creyente. XVIII. Plateresque altarpiece (16th century) 'of the Virgin' by master Juan Ortíz 'El Viejo' (+ 1557). Cross of the Savior of Peñafiel (16th century), by master Cristóbal Romero. The Cabildo of Peñafiel met here and was the headquarters of the town's Archive of Nobility.
