Park
Nature & Parks
Lomas de Arena Regional Park, located about 12 km south of the city, covers a vast area of 34,594 acres and is renowned for its stunning sand dunes, lagoons, and diverse wildlife. The park offers various activities such as horseback rides and sandboarding on the massive dunes. Biocentro Guembe, a nature sanctuary nearby, features a butterfly house and bird park within lush gardens.
Great place to know and to walk. The price to enter is just US$3. You can go just to know, taking on a 4x4 jeep, or you can walk for about 2 hours (7km) since the entry of the park, where you can arrive taking a "micro" in the city.
Fabian P — Google review
Can take a local micro to get there easily. We took bus 109. When we came it was rain season so all the roads were so muddy you couldn't walk. But we still found a nice river and could relax and picnic. Would not recommend in rain season unless you go with a jeep. Found frogs.
Bami N — Google review
I was at this park about a week ago. I had not read the reviews on google carefully (A mistake from my side and just want everyone reading this review to be aware). I was using a taxi to do sight seeing in Santa Cruz and surrounding areas. The driver mentioned that he has been to this park about 10 or 12 years ago. So, I took it for granted that he knew the area. From the main entrance it is about 3 Km walk or drive (normal cars are allowed in this stretch of the access to the park. However, it is better if you have a a four wheel drive). The sand is very soft but we did not have any issues driving this 3 Km to the access to the park. This access is manned and only four wheel drive vehicles are allowed beyond this point. The entrance fee per person is 20 Bolivian currency, which is roughly 3 US$. The name and details of persons entering is registered in the entrance log (however, when we returned, there was no one at this gate and our exit was not recorded. Not sure what happens if you get lost or have an issue while walking to the sand dunes). I had asked my taxi driver about how much is the distance to the sand dunes and he said it is about 2 Km. It actually was 4 Km and it took us one hour to walk to the foothills of the big sand dune. Did not have the energy to climb up this sand dune. We had made the mistake of not carrying water and snacks. I was tired but we did not rest, we walked back to the gated entrance, which also took us about one hour. Pls be aware that there are no shops / stores within (There are cabanas and accommodation for tourists in the area) this area to buy water or food. Pls pack water and snacks before to start this 4 Km walk. If it is a sunny day, then pls also do what you have to do to protect yourself from the sun. The sand is very soft and your shoes (foot) does dig a bit into the sand as you walk this 4 Km.
John C — Google review
Lomas de Arena is a small natural wonder of 3000 hectares of sand dunes located 17 km (45 min drive) from the city of Santa Cruz Bolivia. Take your water and hat for the sun.

You have to overcome tough access road in order to reach marvelous&unexpected desert area in Bolivia. 4WD vehicle is must to navigate Worth to & must visit place in Santa Cruz de la sierra if u stay few days or live there
Seong-won C — Google review
We took the bus micro to the beginning of the park. It was raining a lot for 2 days so the roads that lead to the park were too muddy to properly walk.
Emile — Google review
It's amazing. But there are no kiosks, trails or any kind of services.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra Botanical Garden, located 12km east of the city center, offers a peaceful retreat from urban life. Spanning over 200 hectares, it features woodland trails, a lake, and a cactarium showcasing exotic plants. Visitors can climb a wooden viewing platform for panoramic views of the treetop canopy and city skyline. The garden is home to diverse wildlife including tortoises and sloths.
It is a priceless experience where you can enjoy nature with your beloved ones. Children love to see and enjoy the beauty of wild and protected animals in wide and clean areas.
David ( — Google review
What is this? That's the worst botanical garden I have ever seen - and I have been to several ones... Even 1 star is too much. And for this 30 bs? Really?
Pe T — Google review
Beautiful Place with a vide variety of plants and wildlife in general. It is really worth it to take a long stroll in there since there is just so much wildlife to discover once you just start looking around you. I hope that they will be able to better their upkeep but taking the huge space in mind they are doing ok.
Leonardo B — Google review
Fantastic gardens full of birds and other wildlife - Sloths, Caiman and Turtles. Very well looked after and a must visit
Jon C — Google review
It's a nice place to walk around. The from off the park is quite pretty. The mosquitoes are very hungry. They get really bad the further back into the park you walk. The large open roads have fewer mosquitoes. The paths that are further back can get very muddy as they are not paved. Several items/ areas are off-limits for repair. The whole place could be gorgeous if more attention/ work was given. Overall we saw a cayman, a Tegu lizard, and a few birds.
Marta H — Google review
I went on a Monday when they were supposed to be closed but they were open and there were other people there also, but not many. This is a great place to explore the local flora and fauna. I saw monkeys, turtles, even alligators! I also saw some big lizards but they like to hide from people and are difficult to see. I enjoyed a few hours here exploring the trails. It was hot and sunny and so I didn't need bug repellant, but I did need a LOT of sunblock, so if you go on a hot sunny day, ditch the repellent and slather on the sunblock. Unfortunately, a huge part of the park is closed due to "maintenance" and you're not permitted to enter, though there's also nothing to stop you. I erred on the side of caution however and didn't venture past the posted sign (see photos). There's a tall lookout tower you can climb that offers some views of the surrounding area. There are also some activities for kids. Overall, it was a nice place to pass a few hours. It's quite far from the center of Santa Cruz - $6 - $7 by Uber each way. Entry was $10Bs. I wish the rest of the park was open, but I'm happy I went. I think it's worth checking out if you have some time to spend in Santa Cruz.
Robert B — Google review
A botanical garden of a different kind. A bit wild but original. Make sure to bring insect repellent even in dry season. Entrance is 10 BOB, kids are for free. Uber is a good choice to get there. No wifi for the way back... Recommended.
Jan-H. M — Google review
5 star because -price is only 10 bs -many buses that bring you directly front door 2 bs each eay -mini zoo( lovely birds, turtles, crocodiles, etc...) -Garden is so so but you can get a private guide from personal for free or tip) -map of the place disadvantage: those damn musquitos destroyed me & no food but you can pay 20 bs and use their bbq facilities

Catedral Metropolitana Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo de Santa Cruz, also known as Catedral de Santa Cruz, is a 19th-century Catholic place of worship with a brick exterior and vibrant interior. The cathedral houses the Museo de Arte Sacro, which displays ancient gold and silver relics along with one of the world's smallest books containing the Lord's Prayer in multiple languages.
It's very difficult to describe the feeling when you walk into this cathedral. You can definitely feel the spiritual weight. I highly recommend checking out this cathedral and being at peace.
The N — Google review
A stunning cathedral, positioned in the centre of the city centre. Standing in front of the main pity plaza. It's definitely worth visiting.
Eldar — Google review
Beautiful cathedral filled with history, I was there at night and the plaza its very safe to walk around. There were some people asking for money but they were very polite and would walk away.
Christian L — Google review
It’s very original architecture example of the country and Santa Cruz dela Sierra and located in the 24 de septiembre square. It’s huge and sophisticated. You can make a return around at the right side of the building at the night to many small hand crafted sellers around and in the small square some street art or dance that you can see.
I ( — Google review
You can climb the bell tower too. This beautiful church added to the magic that was sitting in that plaza almost every night.
Tim J — Google review
Beautiful old brick church. To go up in the clock tower it's 3 Bolivianos, well worth it, and hundreds of steps in a spiral staircase. The views are wonderful. Be careful if going to the top where the bells ring on the hour, very loud! There are two other floors to stop and take pictures from. The church itself doesn't have gold inside and has cobwebs on the wooden vaulted ceiling, but nice anyway.
Damon L — Google review
Sadly enough, the Catedral Metropolitana Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo (1845) is about the only sight to see while in Santa Cruz.

(Translated by Google) It's a shame that a city as large and thriving as ours has such a small and neglected Natural History Museum. I greatly appreciate the work of everyone there; you can tell they do it with great care, but it's truly frustrating that something as precious as our history, mineral wealth, flora, and fauna is reduced to a few square meters due to the lack of attention from the authorities. The place has a lot of room for improvement. Really cool cultural house slash art exhibit. There is a nice cafe inside and the art was nice in each section. Pinto was an important figure In Bolivian history and this was actually one of his homes. Pretty neat. If you are in the vicinity of Plaza 24 de Septiembre definitely swing by.

I thought this was a cool gallery, though none of the artwork was anything I could buy. It seemed amateurish - something I would expect a high school or young college student to produce. Definitely not thought-provoking in any way. There's a restaurant/café inside with a nice courtyard where you can rest and enjoy a beer or coffee and some food. It's free admission so it's a nice place to visit and take a break from the sun and heat. There's also a cool little gift shop.

Visitors can enjoy the thought-provoking exhibits and explore the innovative work of emerging talents. Manzana Uno is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and those seeking to experience Santa Cruz’s thriving cultural scene.

This was a great little find near the Plaza 24 de Septiembre. An outdoor plaza with exhibits welcomes you as you approach. If you go inside there are other exhibit rooms available showcasing different artists works. Most exhibits we're closed when I went but one remained open in what looked like the main hall. The works of art and sculpture were amazing. I had just been to the salt flats of Uyuni and in the plaza was a full exhibit portraying the salt flats and the industry surrounding it. Sadly the lithium supply is one of the largest in the world and it seems mining it may take over the preservation of the salt flats. Get to it if it's on your bucket list before it's too late...

Ecological park
Biocentro Guembe Mariposario is a popular attraction in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, offering a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The main draw is its breathtaking butterfly sanctuary, where visitors can witness various species up close. Additionally, the park features opportunities to observe parrots without barriers and offers encounters with butterflies, turtles, monkeys, and orchids within a relatively compact area.
I read other reviews that it was dirty, slow service in the restaurant, and complaints no one spoke English. BUT I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived- it was Awesome! We paid less than 170bo for adults and kids were less. Senior discount too. Any aviary I have been to elsewhere has been more expensive for such a HUGE enclosed bird cage. Really, quite impressive. There was an English speaking guide we met within 3 minutes of entering and they offer tours every other hour (in English). You can climb high up in the aviary and it’s the closest I’ve been to Toucans despite visiting many Zoos elsewhere including Brazil. The birds are beautiful and don’t get too scared when you’re nearby. I didn’t go swimming, but the pools also looked pretty clean - not cloudy like in some other pictures I saw online. The restaurant was about $12 USd for a full buffet with churrasco grilled meats, salad bar and soup bar. A jug of juice was less than USD$3. Beers 22bo. The service was great and I felt like it was cheaper than other places I’ve eaten outside of a tourist spot. Honestly, reading some other reviews - I wonder if these people have any idea what other countries are like and how to travel decently without speaking a local language - there were signs in English/Spanish all over.
Aaron R — Google review
A fun stop for the day. The aviary has quite a few macaws and a pair of toucans. The mariposa was teeming with butterflies. Quite a few different pools that the kids had a blast in. Food available, not great but reasonably priced. The pacu schools in the pond were mesmerizing to watch.

Definitly not worth the 200BOB per person. The adventure park scores literaly below zero. We saw that the entrance price was 180BOB per person. However, for 20BOB extra you could also do the adventure park (what a steal!). We bought it and asked what it entailed, no one spoke English so we just went with it. They pointed us to the reception where also no one spoke English. After walking for a bit we found the adventure park and were excited to join. I think they shouldn't let foreigners join who don't speak Spanish (US!). Because they weren't able to do the safety instructions in English. The adventure park (for as far as we could figure out) was one of those tree climbing things. I've done those all over Europe. And let me be clear: this one was made for skinny Peruvian kids. Not big and tall European adults like us. We got the safety instructions and my partner's things where you clip your safety cable with didn't close properly. They said it wasn't a problem (it was). And only because we were adamant about him having a different harnas they let him exchange it and put on a new one. The start is a 'rock climbing wall' where the wall clips almost fall off of. The rest of the way is just not secured properly. Not for tall (173 cm and 184 cm) people nor for people in weight categories ( 78+ kg ). Half way I saw a ladder and told them I wanted to get off. I couldn't tell them why because again, no Spanish (more my problem than theirs) but we ended safely back on the ground. The rest of the park is... A bit dirty. Maybe we came in low season (there were like 20 visitors). But it looked like it needed a lot of maintenance. The butterfly enclosure, bird enclosure and monkey enclosure were nice. When we left after 2 hours I saw on the sign that there was a half day (later part of the day) option for 80BOB if I read it correctly. I think that might be somewhat worth it if you'd like to do something for about 2 hours.

The park has the opportunity to see amazing types of parrots up close and not on the other side of a cage. It also had a nice area to see butterflies, turtles, monkeys and orchids. It is not a large area and you only need about 2 hours to see the animals here. (Of course there are several pools and a buffet if you pay extra for it.) The animals are beautiful but the park is showing signs of age.
Ian A — Google review
Quiet expensive place but worthwhile especially when they run promos like 2 for 1. The place deteriorated a little but that is excusable since they had a rough financial year. Otherwise the nature and animals you are able to see on eye level is just stunning. And a visit is recommended for all ages.

The Contemporary Art Museum is a spacious place that allows visitors to take their time appreciating each piece of art. It features exhibits with archaeological pieces from pre-Hispanic cultures in Eastern Bolivia and showcases the culture of native people from the region. The museum is located inside the historic center and housed in an old house with beautiful patios, making it an interesting spot for a leisurely visit. Although small, it offers interesting presentations and a mixed layout of ambiences.

Everything is overpriced🤨, a typical westerns styled mall with brands costing more than in Europe. The environment is nice though.
S.R. W — Google review
I would love to give the mall 5 stars however there is a store called H2O that schemes people out of their money. I should have called the police. They give you one price when you enter then a different price when it's done. They target people who they feel have a lot of money. I will never use this location again. Very disappointed in management and the translator. This makes me not want to visit Bolivia again, authorities should investigate this operation.

Seemed very nice, with a lot of light, a lot of stores, and many options. The food court was very nice as well and with multiple interesting alternatives. I'd say the part I didn't like from it is the street side that isn't so clean and has a lot of beggars and kids sleeping around...

The zoo also plays an important role in conservation and education, offering informative displays and activities for both children and adults. With its lush surroundings and diverse animal residents, the Zoológico Noel Kempff Mercado offers an educational and enjoyable experience for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.

Very clean and organized place . A big diversity of animals
Lucia P — Google review
Good price but kind of depressing, the big cats have tiny cages and are clearly frustrated just walking around in a circle for hours. There is a huge place that you can walk through full of birds, tortoises and a reptile or two which was amazing but then we saw the exact same birds separately in tiny cages. The zoo looks run down and needs a lot of work and TLC for the animals.

Santa Cruz Municipal Zoo is a considerable wildlife park showcasing a variety of animals, accompanied by an informative museum and a weekly display of orchids. The zoo boasts extensive grounds abundant with vegetation, providing pleasant surroundings complete with ample seating and shaded areas. However, one drawback worth noting is the cramped enclosures for certain roaming creatures like jaguars, small oncas, and foxes that seemed restless within their confined spaces.
One of the better zoos I have visited. There is an aquarium and a herpetarium. All the species are native to Bolivia. The gardeners do a magnificent job.
Chris D — Google review
Beautiful place, mostly clean with lots of flora but still a long way to become a good zoo. Animals need more space and a better environment according to their natural place of origin. Also more signaling needed, signs are too old or non existent.
Veronica A — Google review
Clearly the communist regime and the mediocracy of the native people have taken their toll. Lack of maintenance and almost half the variety of animals aren’t there anymore. Many farms could give you the same animals to see in better conditions
George R — Google review
Cleanliness could be better. Average waiting times when I visited. Animals look stressed (perhaps because of the large crowd). Overall a good educational experience for everyone but you can tell animals are not having a great time surrounded by hundreds of people

Diverse little city center zoo that has much to offer, especially if you wish to see different things than in Europe. Good for kids with a couple of playgrounds. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the paved walkways or take advantage of the jogging paths that encircle the park.
It was quite nice, we had a good time with our nephews and nieces. They jumped on the trampolines, and rode one of the many carts. There are paved roads for pedestrians and several kiosks for refreshment. The many trees give shadow on hot days, and you can enjoy a picnic under them.
Johan B — Google review
This park is huge. From one end to the other end, walking along the paved walkway in the center of the park, is about 0.5 Miles / 0.8 KM. I found this park a nice place for my morning walk. The walkway in the center of the park is covered by trees, which means that you do not need a cap / hat if you are walking on a sunny day. There is a jogging / walking path around the park, which many people were using. People do bring in their dogs also for walks / training in this park. Outside the paved walkway, you need to be careful as not everyone picks up after their pets. I saw most of the dog owners cleaning up after their pets but did find some waste in the grass, out side the paved areas. Although Google says that the parks opens at 0800 Hrs, I found the place left open at 0700 Hrs. Looks like it is left open 24 hours, but I cannot say for sure. But I have been walking in this park from 0700 Hrs. There is a BBQ area within the park. Not sure about the rules of using these BBQ areas. This park also has basket ball courts.

Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado is a vast national park located in the eastern jungles of Bolivia, near the border with Brazil. It is home to endangered local wildlife and encompasses the Amazon rainforest and wetlands. Accessing the park can be quite challenging, as it is remote and requires a guide for exploration. Visitors can expect to encounter biting insects while exploring the wild and virgin jungles on the edge of the Brazilian frontier.
One of the worlds last true wilderness areas. This Bolivian National Park is unbelievable for wildlife watching , however as its so remote its only for the most wild and intrepid travellers. Access to Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is extremely difficult and needs to be with a legal tour operator. Nicks Adventures Bolivia in Santa Cruz can arrange such excursions.

At the end of the day we are only humans, a mere flesh and blood to suck and bite on. While trying to evade numerous biting insects of any kind possible to imagine, our party explored the wild and virgin jungles on the edge of the Brazilian frontier. We have seen magnificent waterfall, isolated lagoons and an immense plateau projecting 980 m straight into the humid tropical skies. It was a life-time experience. If you're in Bolivia DO NOT MISS THIS PARK!

Amazing eastern jungles of Bolivia at the border with Brazil. I was there back in 2010, the access point was through la Florida - a village of about 30 families. We hired a guide (mandatory) who was also the village bike guy so he fixed us up with bikes which were necessary due to the long distances inside the park. We stayed for about 5 days inside, went up the maseta table and finished in the amazing cataracta waterfall which was a great refreshing and powerful shower. I highly recommend it, it's well worth the challenging access and distances since it's secluded and the wildlife is abundant and visible due to the scarcity of people .add another chill day going along the river in a canoe to see some of the wildlife there too. Probably the best thing I did in South America

Espejillos is an awe-inspiring destination with pristine, unspoiled water and a tranquil ambiance. The local residents are incredibly welcoming, adding to the charm of this remote location. While its distance from town adds to its allure, visitors should come prepared with their own provisions as there are no food options available on-site during the week. It is important to exercise caution due to slippery rocks, but despite the potential dangers, Espejillos remains a must-visit spot for nature enthusiasts.
This is one of the most amazing places I have ever seen, natural fresh and very clean water, great & peaceful, the local people are super friendly. It’s a bit far from town but that’s what makes it special. You must bring food before going in thou because when I went during the week there wasn’t any food inside. It is also dangerous, rocks are very slippery and you must be careful but it is a must go.

The waterfall is very nice. It was on national holiday so there were so many people but almost all locals. It was nice to see those people. You need to take a truck to get to the entrance after the bus ride. It was 15bs. If you prefer less people, i recommend that you go on the weekdays.

Took the micro that good to El Torno. The driver told us where to get off. We bought water and then went on a truck to los Espejillos. It was probably an hour on a bumpy dirt road. When we got there, we walked back in, about half hour, and it was gorgeous! It's not a difficult hike, yet it's not easy for the elderly.

(Translated by Google) They charged 4 tourists' tickets without providing the service of letting them access the waterfall. They refused to refund the money. The place is beautiful and if it weren't for such people, we would bring hundreds more tourists. But there are many other tourist attractions in this beautiful country <3 (Original) Cobraron 4 entradas de turistas sin brindar el servicio de dejarlos acceder a la catarata. (Translated by Google) A must see if you are in the Santa Cruz area. Admission costs 20bs and on Tuesdays they do 2x1. I recommend leaving early, since it takes 1.30 hours to get there from the city by car, and the park closes at 5:00 pm sharp. The place has barbecue areas and grills for grilling. Beautiful waterfall and many smaller waterfalls to cool off and play in the water. A very beautiful and quiet place, surrounded by birds and sounds of nature. I recommend bringing sunscreen and insect repellent.

You can bring food to prepare or coordinate with community members to get food You can get there by road to Cochabamba km 23 or so or by the road that leaves from Porongo, recommended for 4x4 vehicles. To get to the waterfall you follow a natural path, you must be careful because there is a lot of humidity and the path tends to be slippery (Original) Cascada natural, el complejo está administrado por una comunidad con amplio garaje par a vehículos, se puede acampar o alquilar cuartos para pasar la noche. There are deep and deep pools up to 11m so it can meet all the expectations of many people, adventurers, families, children. It would definitely be ideal to accommodate the road as soon as possible so it will be a more sought-after place by people. Another issue, I think there is a need for more facilities, restaurants, accommodation, with a little increase in the level of service, definitely a more emblematic place will remain here🇧🇴👍the only shadow would be since the place is not so spacious if it becomes saturated with people will not be able to enjoy bathing well 곳임.

(Translated by Google) Adventure tourism; the drive there is like navigating a rally-style track—the road is in terrible condition, with numerous streams crossing it, and you'll endure a constant rattling before arriving. Once there, you pay the entrance fee and parking fee, and then it's a walk to the main waterfall, passing by a series of natural pools and trails with wooden railings, and even crossing some rustic bridges. It's a good place to explore, take a dip in the waterfall's crystal-clear water, and snap some great photos. There are restrooms and a few food stalls.

The Museo Guarani offers a valuable opportunity to learn about the Guarani culture. Although it may currently be somewhat disappointing, it has the potential to grow and improve. The museum houses approximately 15 artifacts from the early 20th century, providing insights into this rich cultural heritage. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to share extensive information, which is greatly valued by visitors. While admission is free, donations are encouraged as a way of supporting this important institution.
This place has potential, at the moment it's fair to say that it's a bit underwhelming though .. There are about 15 items in the museum, which date back to the beginning of the 20th century. The staff is really helpful and give lots of info so that's highly appreciated. The museum is free but a donation is expected.
