1Le Puy

Le Puy-en-Velay, a charming town in southern France, is famous for its green lentils and as the starting point of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage trail. The 12th-century Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral with its stunning frescoes and cloister is a must-see. Perched on a volcanic rock, the St-Michel d’Aiguilhe chapel from the 10th century offers breathtaking views.

Notre-Dame de France is a monumental pink statue located just a short walk from the city center. Built in 1860 using metal from 213 cannons seized during the Crimean War, it offers visitors the unique experience of climbing a spiral staircase inside and peering out from the top. Perched on the volcanic rock formation known as Corneille, this representation of the Virgin Mary provides breathtaking panoramic views of Le Puy and Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe.
I was absolutely stunned by Notre-Dame de France in Le Puy. The statue is massive and looks incredible up close. The climb is totally worth it because the views from the top are just insane. I think this is one of the best places in France, highly recommend visiting!
Anirudha S — Google review
The trek up to the statue is moderately strenuous, with minor rests it took about 5-10 mins from the ticket booth. The view of the surrounding countryside from the observation deck is incredible; especially the view of Rocher Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe (St. Michel Chappel).
Nick F — Google review
One of the best and peaceful place in Marseille you can get always positive vibes when you entered in the Notre dame area
Sahaya J — Google review
No need for reservation.Ticket bought on the spot.Amazing Sunday afternoon and amazing view.
Paul C — Google review
Beautiful experience. Worth going up al the stairs.
Yvonne S — Google review
Not an easy climb up but not too hard if you are in a decent shape. The view from the top is great. Going into the statue is just a fun, but you don't really see much more, so if you skip you won't loose much.
Shmaya D — Google review
A must do, incredible views of the city from the top, you can even go all the way up into the crown of the statue.
Megue R — Google review
An incredible experience, climbing the hill and seeing the beautiful statue of the Virgin Mary. You can even climb up inside, like a lighthouse.

Rocher Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe is a remarkable 82-meter high rock formation dedicated to Archangel Michael, with a history dating back over 2 million years. The site features a stunning chapel built over 1000 years ago, accessible by climbing 268 steps that wind around the rock. Visitors can take breaks on benches along the way.
A must in le Puy. Atmosphere in this church is so intense. You also have to see the night light show. Go there after 11 Pm to have the best colors.

Atmospheric. Tough climb up the steps but worth it. Good information available.

A steep staircase takes you up to a small chapel. A couple of interesting introductory videos do a good job of explaining what you're about to see.

Visiting Rocher Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe is a must of you are visiting Le Puy! The trek to the chappel took about 10 mins, but the views and experience were incredible.

Wonderful 260 steps up..with stop benches..if you do not want to eun all theway up and take in the view. Beautiful chapel
Danielle B — Google review
WoW! Is enough to explain. The small church dedicated to Michael the Archangel on the top, and the incredible steep ascent of this 2 million years ancient Vulcano, the view from down and from the top. The Portal, the remains of the frescos.. All amazing!
Paolo E — Google review
Unique church on top of a rock, in the middle of Puy-en-Velay. The church on top is dedicated to archangel Michael, and there is a little chapel dedicated to the archangel Gabriel. The church dates back to the 10th century, and has some very beautiful frescoes on the inside. The museum at the bottom of the climb explains a lot about which figure depicts who, and explains the history of the church. Entry costs €6 per person, but we thought this is definitely worth it. I don't think the climb is accessible when you have a disability. Otherwise, the climb is doable.
Thirza S — Google review
Unbelievable achievement to build a chapel on top of a very high rock. Go in the early evening and observe a service before the long walk down. Also visit the Mary and Jesus statue on an even higher rock and experience the son et Lumiere show in the evenings. Brilliant place to visit. The town is called Puy en Velay.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Puy is a Romanesque masterpiece located in the town of Puy-en-Velay, attracting pilgrims and tourists with its unique striped facade made of volcanic rock and sandstone. This UNESCO World Heritage site was built between the 10th and 12th centuries and features a blend of Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. The cathedral houses a revered statue of the Black Virgin, which is paraded through the streets annually on August 15th.
A place of pilgramage. All roads lead to the cathedral. Over 144 cobble stone steps to the top. Not for the faint of heart. Opens up to the altar of the cathedral. Statues of Joan of Arc and Louie XIV. The black virgin Mary. The original was burned during the french revolution.

On top of the hill behind Le Puy, it’s a bit of a climb, but well worth it Quite plain inside by Euro standards but has a “vibe” that makes you think it’s something special The views back towards the town and great
TerryA — Google review
Always a must see when i go to Le Puy, beautiful church with many secrets and little ally ways. There are some closed doors that if you give a little push will open right up and you will find yourself all by yourself in a new section of the church. There are great views of the city and other landmarks in the city. Do be ready to walk up many steps as this church is at the top of the hill.
Gaspard A — Google review
This is a magnificent historical Romanesque cathedral. It's location on a high point in the heart of the old town offers amazing views of the city. We were lucky as during our visit there was a Pilgrim's mass on. This Cathedral is definitely a must visit.

Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques, a former 17th-century hospital for pilgrims on the Way of St. James, is now a historical site in Le Puy-en-Velay. Visitors can explore the well-preserved building and gain insight into the intricate healthcare system of the past. The museum attached to the cathedral offers immersive shows with sound and light, including exhibits on Leonardo da Vinci.
(Translated by Google) Poor signage for accessing the museum on Sundays, several interactive media (sound and/or videos) don't work in the self-guided tour section of the museum, and it's impossible to see the four immersive films without necessarily seeing one of them twice... Despite everything, the welcome is excellent, the venue is very clean. And the immersive shows are truly amazing. The prices are reasonable. Despite the minor issues, I recommend this experience. For the two missing activities, you'll have to return to reception and get new tickets. It costs €9.50 per adult and €6.00 per child. It lasts 50 minutes. Afterwards, a self-guided tour is possible. The welcome was very pleasant; it was perfect. (Translated by Google) Located next to the cathedral, the Hôtel Dieu du Puy has been renovated into a museum. We had booked the “Hotel of Lights” experience, an interesting digital immersion on the themes of freedom and Leonardo da Vinci. The illuminations in the chapel are also very pretty. In addition to this digital part, we have access to the museum inside. There you can find information on nearby cathedrals, on the theme of water, on the paths of Stevenson and St Jacques... and the discovery of the pharmacy is very interesting.

(Translated by Google) I came to visit the Hôtel Dieu for its architecture and its museum value, but it's impossible to visit without indulging in the COMPOSTELLA show, billed as "unique immersive scenographies in a magical place." They are undoubtedly unique, but only in the ridiculousness of their execution, since the technique used is completely commonplace in 2025 (see the Festival of Lights in Lyon, for example). The first act, on freedom, with jumbled images and a mismatched soundtrack: I had never imagined that gypsy jazz (which I otherwise like) could illustrate the Declaration of the Rights of Man... The second act, a tearing apart of Impressionist paintings and their recomposition. It's of no interest. Finally, a projection of geometric drawings that failed to fit the geometry of the room's vaults. The few spectators were checking their smartphones, wondering, and waiting (standing) for it to pass, while wondering if it was worth enduring more than an hour of this thing before visiting the museum.

(Translated by Google) I really enjoyed visiting the Hôtel-Dieu and its digital art center in Le-Puy-en-Velay. Following my visit in September 2025, I can give you a complete and concise presentation of the Hôtel-Dieu and its complex, with everything you need to know: The Hôtel-Dieu of Le Puy-en-Velay, located in the heart of the cathedral district, adjoins the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral (2 rue Becdelièvre, 43000 Le Puy-en-Velay). This historic monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, rises on the hillside, accessible via the cathedral's grand staircase. 🔍 What you'll discover: Compostella Digital Art Center (formerly "Hôtel des Lumières"): three to five immersive 360° scenographies, combining projections and sound creation. For example: A "Liberty, I draw your name" scene in homage to Lafayette, A dive into the world of Leonardo da Vinci, The chapel in lights with animations under Gothic vaults, And the 3D mini-cathedrals in the "Salle des Cuves" Art & Heritage Space (CIAP): permanent and temporary exhibitions on history, medieval pharmacy, local heritage, educational workshops, and a contemporary work by Jean-Michel Othoniel, "The Heart of the Hôtel-Dieu." You can also admire one of the most beautiful medieval hospital pharmacies in France. ✨ Atmosphere & Decor: The venue combines medieval architectural beauty (Gothic vaults, courtyards, frescoes) with modern technologies (video mapping, immersive projections). The atmosphere oscillates between traditional and futuristic, bathed in rich, musical lighting. Visitors appreciate this encounter between the past and digital art for a unique visual and emotional experience. 👍 What I liked about my visit: The immersive and sensory aspect of the 360° digital experiences. The heritage expertise (altars, pharmacy, apothecary), and the enhancement through multimedia devices. A family-friendly venue, suitable for young people and history buffs alike. The architectural harmony: courtyards, porch, inner courtyard, and breathtaking views of Le Puy. ℹ️ Prices & Opening Hours: Full price: around €9, concessions (under 18/students) €8, youth (under 15) €6, free for under 6s (free ticket required). Opening Hours 2025: July–August: daily. September: Wednesday to Sunday. October–November: weekends and holidays. Payment methods: cash, credit card, holiday/culture vouchers, ANCV (French National Cultural Heritage Centre) 🛎️ Practical information & reservations: Booking recommended online (Compostella website or Tourist Office) or directly at reception. Permanent individual tours, with audio/guide in French and English upon request. Group tours (min. 20 people) & half-day packages including meals + guided tours + digital shows, from €48/person. ✅ In summary, I can say that the Hôtel-Dieu, adjacent to the cathedral of Le Puy-en-Velay, is a medieval monument renovated into a renowned digital art center. Compostella offers immersive shows (Leonardo da Vinci, frescoes, mini-cathedrals) in a remarkable historical setting, with heritage exhibitions and a medieval pharmacy. The atmosphere combines visual excitement, historical sensitivity, and technological modernity, appealing to young and old alike. Open in summer and fall, the tour can be planned online, at very affordable prices (€9 full price). A must-see during a visit to Le Puy! I recommend you visit the Hôtel-Dieu and its digital art center. I have attached some photos and videos. Please add a smiley face, a thumbs-up, a heart, etc., under the review and photos to encourage me in my efforts. It's always nice to receive kind feedback. Enjoy your visit. Best regards. Éric Tison F-57 Féy (Metz. Moselle. France).. Bonne visite. Situated in the picturesque city of Le Puy-en-Velay, France, Musée Crozatier is a renowned museum that offers a diverse collection of art, history, and natural sciences. Named after Charles Crozatier, a prominent sculptor from the region, this 19th-century establishment showcases archaeological finds, medieval artifacts, sculptures, paintings, and decorative arts.
It is the best museum I have seen and visited in all my life. I advise all to visit it .

It had a much better selection than I anticipated. Artifacts from Egypt, Rome, and Greece. Kids would probably like the taxidermied animals on the top floor. It was also interesting to find out that the town was the "place for lace."

I enjoyed several hours wondering through the different levels of the museum learning about the local history and enjoying artwork depicting areas that I had been to in the region as well as their temporary exhibition on Japan which while not extensive was enjoyable. I recommend getting the three or five museum pass to get the best value for a one or two day stay in Le Puy.

####I've visited a few other fine art museums and enjoyed always my experience, here was smaller but I actually spent longer as they provided comfy seating almost throughout; To sit relaxed and admire a painting is what fine art should be about. The exhibition of self portraits and the quality of the down lighting was superb. Explanation in french and in English taught me things I didn't know and I came away, a more learned person. Thank you.

This is an odd place because of the disjointed mixture of exhibits, archaeology to art. Such is the eclectic mix, we felt it might almost have been filled with stuff other places did not want. Might interest some, but we were left slightly bemused

Le Camino, also known as the Chemin de Saint-Jacques, is a historical pilgrimage route that attracts travelers from all over the world. In Le Puy-en-Velay, visitors can explore a museum that delves into the rich history of this famous path. The museum showcases exhibitions focusing on various aspects of the Camino, including personal accounts from past pilgrims and spiritual lessons from monks and priests who have made the journey. Additionally, there are captivating watercolor paintings on display.
For the bar: Great drinks at amazing prices For the museum: 4€ entry. Good modern museum in beautiful old building. A bit too much focus on audio for my liking. If you want to take in all the information you wil spend a lot of time just listening to audio testimonials without a lot of things to look at. If you're not French speaking you receive a tablet which automatically shows you the right information depending on which room you're in and which works very well (it felt like I had a better experience thanks to the tablet compared to french speakers with just a paper map)

Hôtel des Lumières offers an unforgettable experience with plenty of things to see, including three well-executed shows on themes like freedom and Leonardo da Vinci. The visit takes about 2 hours, and the guide is friendly. However, accessibility for wheelchair users may be challenging due to stairs. The venue's grand entrance through the cathedral's large porch sets the tone for a magnificent experience. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful and sunny terrace while waiting, where hot and cold drinks are served.

(Translated by Google) Extremely disappointed... I came with my whole family and we were expecting explanations related to the theme of the immersive exhibitions. Unfortunately, we had to endure both poorly executed and boring shows, with music unrelated to the images and absolutely NO explanations. After wasting more than half an hour of our time, we went to the Compostella show, which is just as appalling. You can't see the beauty of the original building, and you have to stare at the poor lighting for long minutes... After 45 minutes of the exhibition, which left us exhausted with boredom, we wanted to visit the pharmacy and found ourselves in front of a glass door: again, very, very little explanation, in this place with so much untapped potential. It was therefore a disappointing experience that could have had potential: a few more explanations on the theme of the illustrations or on the Hôtel Dieu would change the whole visit.

(Translated by Google) A great show to spend a lovely afternoon!!! First we arrive through the large porch of the cathedral, monumental, magnificent... We turn left to meet the very welcoming and friendly staff... To wait, there is a terrace peaceful and sunny where hot and cold drinks are served... Once the tickets have been scanned (purchased in the morning on the site) we pass into the presentation room which sets the tone... grandiose... A very friendly guide gives the final instructions for having a good time during the show, and off we go for 2 hours... We are introduced into the first room which depicts the evolution of our planet... We take in what we see on the walls and under our feet... It's beautiful, immersive, the images are neat and the animations fluid. .. About twenty minutes later, we continue into a second room where we will be transported into the world of the impressionists and guided by the path of Samuel Le Bihan... Here again, the images and the music especially make us experience a exceptional moment... The duration is also around twenty minutes. You can then visit the museum section, take the time to study everything. A special mention for the pharmacy at the Hôtel Dieu where everyone will be able to appreciate the work done in this room... And finally, the last projection room, certainly the most mind-blowing, under the vaults of the chapel of the Hôtel Dieu... Lying on deckchairs, you have plenty of time to contemplate the sweep of images projected onto the stone ceiling ... And there, it's an apotheosis of sensations lasting about a quarter of an hour... The very last part of the visit takes place in the vat rooms, where you can appreciate the architecture and magnificent vaults, and where you can admire models of the main places of worship in the region. You will have understood that I totally appreciated these digital works which transport us to the past, to billions of years before our era... Sorrowful spirits and killjoys will tell you that they have already seen or 'there is nothing exceptional... It is true that nowadays people are no longer ecstatic about anything, they consume entertainment without any perspective or reflection on what they see... I I have no shame in admitting that I I've never witnessed anything like what's happening in the chapel...
