Grand Socco, also known as Place du 9 Avril 1947, is a vibrant market square that serves as a connection between the medina and Ville Nouvelle in Tangier. Renamed in honor of Mohammed V's independence speech, it comes alive in the evenings with vendors displaying an array of second-hand goods. The colorful market attracts peasant women selling fruits and fowl near the Anglican Church of St Andrew.
Such a beautiful city square full of life and colour. Easily spend hours people watching and enjoying some goo delicacies and coffee in eat-outs around.
Shaik M — Google review
The Grand Socco of Tangier is a vibrant local market filled with bustling bazaars. It features a large fish market and is surrounded by many historic tourist sites, along with authentic local restaurants and cafés. You’ll also find several fresh fruit and vegetable stalls offering high-quality produce. A notable highlight is the tomb of Ibn Battuta, the world-famous ancient traveler, who was buried in his beloved hometown. It was from here that he began his 29 year journey around the world—starting on a donkey! A must-visit for anyone exploring Tangier’s culture and history!
Iftikhar Q — Google review
Cleanliness Cleanliness is a mixed bag. The square itself and its main open areas are reasonably kept: you can see maintenance of the benches, the fountain, the pavement. But stray litter appears, especially later in the day: discarded wrappers, fruit peels, loose papers. In the narrower, more crowded alley-entrances toward the souks, there are uneven cobblestones, some dirt, smells from food stalls, fishmongers, etc. That’s normal in an old souk, but for someone sensitive, the smell (especially of fish + spices + humidity) can be intense. Also smells from garbage in side alleys sometimes. Overall: beautiful, atmospheric, but not “spotless European square” standard. What’s Sold & Approximate Prices The variety is huge, and goods are aimed both at locals and tourists. You’ll find: Fresh produce: fruits, vegetables; fish and meat in the food market sections. Spices: cumin, cinnamon, black & white pepper, ras el hanout, etc. Leather goods: slippers (babouches), bags, wallets. Textiles, carpets/rugs, fabrics. Traditional cookware & metalware, lamps. Clothing, shoes. Jewelry & small trinkets. Cafés & food stalls around: pastries, mint tea, street food. Prices are a bit fuzzy (they vary by vendor, tourist vs local, how badly you negotiate), but here are some impressions: Me and my husband bought something that amounts to 50 MAD worth about 500g from a kid who sold dates, sweet/ salty/ sour treats. The next 2 days, we went back to get more malhour dates from the same stall but the kid's dad was there instead, and it was 60 MAD per kg and we got 5kg worth of them. Other items (leather, textiles) can be more expensive, especially if the seller recognizes you as a tourist. Rugs especially can run high; you’ll be quoted what seems steep unless you negotiate. We were led by a man to a shop called, Moroccan Brocade, I wanted to buy these beautiful prayer mats but they were to expensive for us. I wanted to get 16 and he asked for 600 euros. That was such a shock to me. We did buy 2 pieces of table cloth from them to support their business and that was it. To top it off, after paying for the things, the salesman asked us for a 20 euro tip for his service. Common Scams / Pitfalls: 1. Fake / Poor quality “handmade” goods You may be told that a leather bag, rug, or lamp is handcrafted, genuine, high-quality. In some cases, it’s mass-produced or uses inferior materials. The price can be inflated accordingly. If you don’t know what genuine materials/textile patterns feel like, you may pay much more than it’s worth. 2. Overcharging / Tourist Pricing If the vendor realizes you are a traveller, expect higher initial prices. Haggling is expected. If you don’t haggle, you may pay 2-3x what locals do. Also “best price” claims (this is the last one, my friend) are common. 3. Misleading “free guiding” or unwanted “help” A classic: someone offers to “show you the way” or help you carry bags, then expects a tip that is far beyond what you’d reasonably expect. And all that mentioned above, we have experienced it first-hand. Overall Impressions & Advice It’s a beautiful, lively place, full of character. Perfect if you like atmosphere, people-watching, absorbing culture, taking photos, enjoying food smells, colorful stalls. But, be ready: use small cash, small notes; have patience for haggling; inspect closely; keep your valuables safe; don’t take offers that seem too good to be true. If possible, bring a local with you, or ask for recommendations of trustworthy shops.

The square that has the entrance to the Souk area looks like something from an olden day movie. Always lively with noise and commotion. Parking was a breeze if you are driving.

> ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A beautiful and lively place in the heart of Tangier! 🌴 The Grand Socco is full of energy, local life, and history. You can find cafés, shops, and street vendors all around. It’s a great spot to feel the real spirit of Tangier, especially in the evening. Highly recommended for a visit! 🇲🇦✨

Store
Las Chicas is a trendy two-story concept store located just outside the old Medina walls in Tangier. Founded by Moroccan filmmaker Farida Benlyazid and her stylish collaborator, this shop offers a diverse range of products including vintage jewelry, colorful fashion and accessories from Marrakech and Tangier, hats, scarves, local beauty products, original art, housewares, and cosmetics.
Lovely boutique for luxury modern Moroccan clothing, crockery, and vintage jewellery. I fell in love with several clothing items and vintage jewellery prices; ended up buying a cute chunky hand-knitted sweater, a leather bracelet and necklace, a cute embroidered napkin, and some face cream. Expect premium pricing for their products. Very much enjoyed spending time in the little cafe upstairs, drinking a delightful golden latte (curcumin, spices, vegan milk). The store is owned by two women, and run mostly by women staff. Lovely calm vibe and great selection of products. CAFÉ UPDATE: We returned for the vegan golden latte again this morning, and voila! realized they have an amazing breakfast available too! Ridiculously good breakfast and for a very reasonable price. Served with care and attended to with warmth. A delightful discovery in Tangier.

Wonderful artisanal boutique, with a cozy little cafe on a terrace too. Bought myself some mini tajines with 18 karat gold glazing here for Christmas presents (very well received!) and spent some time writing postcards with an espresso. Will have to come back for a colourful pouf someday. 😌

Super cute. Kitschy items, cafe and some beautifully sewn higher end garments. Worth a look but it’s definitely the kind of place where you buy like 1 thing because of the prices.

Tanger City Center is a vibrant and modern shopping mall nestled in the heart of Tangier, Morocco. This expansive retail haven boasts an impressive array of stores featuring popular brands like LC Waikiki, Miniso, and Adidas, making it a must-visit for fashion enthusiasts. Beyond shopping, visitors can indulge in delicious meals at fast-food favorites like KFC or enjoy a refreshing drink at Gaufreta Cafe.

Tanger City Center is a very good destination for anyone visiting Tangier who wants a modern shopping + dining experience in a convenient location. It’s especially suitable for: • Casual shopping and browsing • Families who want a bit of entertainment (kids area, cinema) • Travelers who want a comfortable break from traditional sightseeing • Combining a mall stop with other activities in Tangier
Ben R — Google review
Unfortunately, my experience at this restaurant was very disappointing. The service was terrible — there was no welcome, no attention to my needs, and my seat was given to someone else without any apology or explanation. I will definitely not be coming back.

Great mall Had everything you could possible need for your everyday needs or for buying gifts for family and friends Also great places to eat Has a kids play area and cinema

The beach is beautiful and some buildings have a good structure! But honestly, some of the people - specially the men - are very disrespectful. Unfortunately there were many occasions where I was harassed. Also, there’s always someone asking for money or trying to convince you in all ways to buy something. That made the experience unpleasant, but some places are pretty with nice history!
Amanda C — Google review
Tangier city is a captivating blend of cultures, where East meets West. The vibrant medina, with its narrow alleys and bustling markets, takes you on a journey through time. The architectural gems like the Kasbah and the Grand Socco offer a glimpse into the city's rich history. The picturesque coastline is a treat for beach lovers and the vibrant nightlife scene adds an exciting touch. Tangier's unique charm, cultural diversity, and warm hospitality make it a must-visit destination for any traveler seeking an enchanting experience.
Younes L — Google review
The mall offers a variety of shops to buy at , yet u can rarely find a shop that offer something at reasonable price to low budget clients, because most prices start from 499Dh and up. But the food section and the movie theater, makes this mall very popular to young ppl. The location of this mall is near the beach so u can smell the ocean, plus i recommend killing time at the mall before u go to the the train station.

Rasheed T — Google review
The bowling area was nice but the music was too loud to the point i wasn't able to hear my friends talking, we told them to reduce the volume a little bit multiple times and they choose to ignore our requests even when we were the only ones there
Ayman B — Google review
Socco Alto Mall is a comfortable place to shop, especially thanks to the strong air conditioning — it really makes a difference on warm days. There’s plenty of parking available, although unfortunately many people park without any consideration, which can make navigating the lot frustrating. The food court is decent, with a variety of options. The staff isn’t particularly friendly, but I do appreciate that the tables are kept very clean and are regularly wiped down. One major downside is the Wi-Fi: it simply doesn’t work. The code is supposed to be sent via text message, but it never arrives, and none of the restaurants or cafés inside offer their own Wi-Fi either. Overall, it’s a convenient shopping destination with good facilities, but don’t count on being able to connect online while you’re here.
Lady M — Google review
I have been there with my family, really I have nothing to say only it’s magic kingdom

The family-owned establishment has been crafting fragrances for 14 generations and offers a wide range of scents including jasmine, dates, and orange blossom as oils or room scents. Visitors can explore the petite parfumerie nestled within the walls of the medina or visit one of its several locations across Tangier.

Madini Parfumeur on the Boulevard Pasteur is a great place to find all kinds of perfumes and fragrances for yourself, family or friends. Don't miss this great store in downtown Tangier across from the canons. It has been an institution in Tangier for decades and you will appreciate the quality and reasonable prices as well. Madini now has five or six locations in Tangier, including the original shop in the Medina, but this Boulevard Pasteur location seems to be the most popular.
Kenneth M — Google review
Didn't even greet us when we walked in. My partner was excited to buy a perfume and we had really bad service where they would grumpily hand us the bottle that we asked for and we just would try it ourselves. The clearly don't like to make a sale.
Tora T — Google review
They mostly sell 50 ml knock-off perfumes which go for 50 Dirhams a piece. Which is a steal really. Don’t expect to find anything thats to off the beaten path. But you’ll probably find your favourite knock offs of the more known brands here. They also sell pure scents by themselves, think of bottles of pure bergamot, oud et cetera. Service is horrible. Visited multiple times. Sometimes they’re watching football matches while simultaneously interacting with customers. Or they’ll be playing on their phones while customers wait. In order to actually try the scents you will have to ask one of the employees for a whiff. Which they don’t seem too keen on doing. What makes it more difficult, is they will use your wrists to spray on, which doesn’t really allow you to try more than one or two scents. They do have the best quality perfumes in the city in my opinion, so if you know the type of perfume you want, go for it. If you are a picky client, don’t. The staff does not like you, haha..
Omar A — Google review
Great place to get presents! You pick out the scent you want and then select the bottle. You can get cheaper perfume but I really like the presentation -- it looks more like a gift. And, the bottle is a cute decoration The bottle in the picture was 100dih for 10mL

Antique store
Boutique Majid is a renowned antique shop located in the heart of Tangier's Medina, offering an exquisite collection of unique souvenirs and treasures from Morocco and beyond. The owner, Majid, personally curates the selection which includes antique textiles, silks, embroideries, vintage rugs, Amazigh jewelry, wooden boxes, household items, copper and brass pieces sourced from across Africa.
You must stop at Majid when you’re in Tangier. He has great taste and the magic touch when it comes to choosing things for his boutique .He doesn’t negotiate which takes away some of the fun but the fact is, he knows the values of the things he has . Some of it, absolutely exquisite. Do you want to take everything home including Majid haha!
Richard Z — Google review
I'm sure this place thrives on people looking to buy antiques based in the fact Anthony Bourdain visited. Sure, it's like a mini market selection of stuff you can find all around you in the kasbah - jewellery, rugs, textiles etc. but it's really expensive - more so than other places for the same things. I noticed some things like kente clothes that are hand woven but stitched together by zig zig machine - and an inflated price. Other customers - who were mostly American - we picking up stuff and the classic line "you have expensive taste." I feel bad saying it but this place didn't have a great vibe to me. And I also felt we were ignored because we probably didn't look like typical customers. There are so many other beautiful shops in Tangier for vintage jewellery, hand woven rugs, ceramics and textiles. A shop specialising in your intersts have much wider ranges. Found some exquisite jewellery elsewhere where the owner could explain the history of each piece etc. Where as at Majid, there was none of that. Anyway if money is no object, and you don't mind over paying and you want a souvenir but dont want to spend the time in the kasbah go to Majid. Otherwise go to any of the many others who will serve you tea andlet you browse to your content. Majid is definitely not my vibe. Sorry Anthony Bourdain.
Emma D — Google review
Beautiful shop with a lot of really nice stuff, but they drastically overcharge. We found some of the same shawls they were selling for $120USD in Marrakech markets for $20USD.
Brian F — Google review
Boutique Majid is one of the very best antique shops in Tangier, and it has attracted the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Mick Jagger, Sting, and numerous other celebrities from around the world throughout its almost 50 years of existence. Majid’s collections of rare and extraordinary jewelry from the south of Morocco are worthy of a museum, and there are old carpets, antique doors, chests, tables, chairs, fabrics, silver and other items fit for a king or queen. The boutique is located deep in the Medina and is best reached by going to the Petit Socco and turning left at the Cafe Tingis. Just keep walking straight a couple hundred of feet and you will find Boutique Majid on the right. Its friendly and knowledgeable owner is Majid Raiss El Fenni, whose brother Mohammed runs the Volubilis Boutique on the Petit Socco. Everything at Majid is special and authentic and a true find. There is something for everyone here. This is definitely one place to visit when in Tangier.
Kenneth M — Google review

Majid’s is a must. To hear the most amazing stories about the 60s in Tangier, see incredible jewellery and art and take something unique and authentic home with you. Thank you for telling me about Anthony Bourdain, it was incredible to hear the man was as wonderful as he appeared on screen. Thank you for the beautiful carving of Ayat al-Kursi, this is something very special to me.

Wonderful experience here. There is no rush, and you will be well guided through the shop if you so wish. There are options at many different price points, but keep in mind that this is where you will find unique and special pieces. Make sure to say hello when you go in, and don't be shy to ask questions! There are many answers and even more stories to be told.

Nestled on the second floor of a historic inn, Fondouk Chejra offers a unique glimpse into the world of traditional weaving. Very traditional weaver shops. I was hoping to find bathrobes, pj’s…etc, but none of the shops carry those. They mainly have tablecloths, towels and traditional garb, mostly for men. I wouldn’t get out of my way to come here (I read some bloggers suggesting to travel to Tangiers just for this place and find that to be a bit too much), but if you are in the area, worth a stop, particularly if you are in the market for table cloths or towels.

I can highly recommend Bleu de Fes. Abdul, the owner, is a very charming man. He’s very helpful and knowledgable. We bought two rugs, the staff were super helpful in pulling the options we liked the best. Be sure to go up to the terrace, it’s a must for a view of the city. We will be back for sure. Thanks Abdul.

There are many carpet shops in Tangier, but this one is really special, not only for its beautiful designs, but also for the excellent customer service provided by Adil and his assistant. They helped us find the right rug for us. Really special, very professional and amazing handwork.

Beautiful rugs and wonderful customer service! They took the time to explain the advantages of different varieties of rugs. And very patient as we browsed different styles to find the right sizes and colors for our needs. We were pleasantly overwhelmed with all the options and will definitely be back for more in the future!

Rugs you’ll dream about, by far my favorite rug shop in Tangier, possibly anywhere. Really incredible quality, unique vintage wool and silk rugs you can’t find anywhere else. Head up to the third floor and work your way down. Don’t miss the pillows made from vintage blankets on the bottom floor. A real gem. I stopped in early in the day without buying anything and thought about the rugs all day as I didn’t find anything comparable. I ended up coming back for 2 rugs and was able to get a good price. Highly recommend

Bazar Tindouf is a captivating antique store located in an ancient building that once housed the oldest Jewish bank in Tangier. The space features black and white marble floors, with a maze of rooms filled with Moroccan textiles, rare art pieces, china, and glassware. Visitors can expect to be overwhelmed by the glorious selection of treasures crammed from floor to ceiling.
Amazing antique shop filled with treasures. Prices are fair and the owner is friendly and service minded. A very relaxing experience compared to the pushy sales people at the markets.

Update: after 7.5 months, the box made its way to us. It was like a dream. We needed to pinch ourselves. Expecting a wooden box, as promised, it was actually a soft cardboard box that looked like it had travelled far and visited much of the world. All the pieces I had chosen were there, but the two main items were crushed. The sound of rattling glass bought tears to my eyes. You might be able to see the pool of glass at the bottom of the lanterns. Poor lanterns. Ironically the lamp they repaired remained unscathed. Chose the expensive option for cargo... or do it yourself. Previously: I had so much fun looking at everything in this shop. I was incredibly excited that I chose four gorgeous items plus some little tiles. I handed over my money and was promised that they would be sent home to me. That was in April this year. It’s now November. I don’t think I’ll be seeing my lamps. Goodbye $750 Australian dollars. I tried to email. No response.

The guy running the place, Youssef is NOT TO BE TRUSTED! Last December 2024 I paid for a frame and shipping. I waited and waited, then began to text on WhatsApp. It was one excuse after another. Finally this month, September 2025, a friend went in and asked if Youssef would just send me the money for the frame and shipping, forget the whole thing. Youssef said he would "call my friend October 1 when he gets back from vacation and re-imburse me". I'll post with updates. The store seems cool, but it's been one lie after another with this charlatan. Youssef is the kind of guy that gives Moroccans a bad name.
Peggy S — Google review
A very bad experience with this old man who kicked us out (me and my two boys) because maybe we looked Moroccans to him and not the type of tourists he was looking for, he shouted at us without a reason claiming that we’re just gonna waste his time. Me and my kids love collecting antiques and we were planning to spend about £400 during our visit to the antique shops in Tangier, but at the end, he’s not the only one and it’s his loss. Never again!

Since it first opened in 1960, Bazar Tindouf has been in the same location at 64 rue de la Liberté, directly across the street from the famous El Minzah Hotel. You may want to spend half an hour or more rummaging among the antiques items. It’s definitely worth exploring and everything is affordable. At Bazar Tindouf, you will likely discover some special gifts for yourself, family and friends back home. Bazar Tindouf is not to be confused with Galerie Tindouf, another antique shop, located just a few doors away. Bazar Tindouf is a somewhat cluttered shop, which is part of its charm. It is filled with one-of-a-kind ceramics, old coins, bric-a-brac, tables, carpets, chairs, furniture, antiques, old bed frames, candlesticks, light fixtures, paintings and many other items, in multiple rooms. This business is highly regarded and it is definitely one of the best known shops in Tangier. Mohamed Tamli, the owner, is a pleasant and discerning English-speaking Moroccan businessman.

The bazar Traditional Art Gallery is a small, but exquisite, handmade traditional Moroccan shop. The workers are friendly and eager to please, and you may find it difficult to haggle, but it is encouraged. While you may find it difficult to buy anything at the gallery outright, you can often find beautiful rugs here for a fair price.
Not the easiest place to find, but use the map, because it's worth the effort! This is the BEST place for buying beautiful pieces from Morocco! You have every imaginable type of artesanal item in one place on three floors, and a fabulous staff to help you find that perfect item. We walked in and were overwhelmed at first with all the beautiful things, but our new friend, Abdul, helped us navigate each floor until we finally made it to the rugs area. He was so patient! We gave him an idea of our budget, and he pulled out several gorgeous rugs from which to choose. I don't know how we'd have made a decision without his guidance! If we come back to Tangiers, we'll definitely be back there for more gorgeous art!

The Ibn Batouta Mall in Tangier is a high-end shopping center with familiar international brands, cafes and a kids' play area. The mall has modern opulence, with mirrored doors welcoming you into a three-storey mall with a sunlit domed atrium. There are few stores here because it's small, but the clothes are nice and prices are a little high.
Everything in one place – clean, comfortable, and convenient Ibn Battouta Mall is one of the best shopping destinations in Tangier. You can enjoy a variety of restaurants and cafés, perfect for grabbing a bite or relaxing with a coffee. There’s a wide selection of stores for shopping, including a well-stocked supermarket. The mall is clean and well-maintained, with modern restrooms (WC) and great air conditioning especially nice on hot days. There’s also a mosque inside for prayer, which makes it even more convenient for visitors. 📸 Follow me for more recommendations around Morocco on Instagram: @by_mustapha 🔗 instagram.com/by_mustapha

Ibn Batouta Mall in Tangier offers a decent shopping experience, but it feels a bit limited compared to larger malls. The variety of stores is average, and while there are some good eateries, the food court can get crowded. Parking is convenient, but I found the atmosphere could be improved. It's a suitable place for a quick visit, but don’t expect anything extraordinary. Overall, a solid 3/5.

Hanne S — Google review
It cannot be considered a mall, as it does not have a variety of shops. Of course, its location is in the city center, but the place is owned by one clothing company, whose name I do not want to mention. Advice: Look for another mall. You won't find what suits you here.

Watch out for the parking of this mall! They over charge their fees. 20 dirhams for other parkings whole day, whereas their parking charge 40 dhs for 4 hours If you stay longer you will pay 10 dh/hour. Come on! This is not an airport! You sepend money buying clothes and pay parking as well for parking! Love US and Canada for their huge parking lots for free plus free shuttle to the mall
TekyTips _ — Google review
Ibn Batouta Shopping Mall opened the first week of November 2017, and is located on Avenue Ben Tachfine not far from the main city beach. I made my first visit earlier and was hoping to go shopping at the Carrefour, but the English-speaking help desk woman told me that it was not yet open but will be open on November 15. I walked in and noticed that all the escalators work and there are two elevators to take you down to the lower level where the Carrefour is located. This Carrefour is not as large as the huge Carrefour at the Socco Alto Mall but it has every food item you will need. There is a Zara shop here, and several upscale clothing shops, an electronics store and other businesses, plus an expensive cafe. But from what I can tell, this mall is not as large as either the Tanger Boulevard or the large shopping mall in Malabata across from the train station and next to the Hilton Hotel. The Ibn Batouta Shopping Mall is an improvement in the downtown area. The exterior of this mall is mirrored glass, giving it a modern touch, and the architectural design is incredible, with a domed ceiling in the atrium area. There are a number of security guards throughout and a help desk. The mall also has its own parking garage in the basement level for customers that is entered from a back street or accessed by two elevators.

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Librairie des Colonnes is a legendary book store in Tangier, established in 1949 and once frequented by renowned writers like Samuel Beckett and Truman Capote. The charming exterior of the building gives way to shelves filled with books in French, Spanish, English, and Arabic. After undergoing major renovation, it reopened on December 16, 2010. This iconic bookstore continues to be a hub for the thriving literary community in modern Tangiers.
An international bookstore with a distinctive selection that exudes an almost overly artistic flair. It's a challenging world for bookshops, but this one is a must-see at all times.
Ismaël G — Google review
Since it first opened on Boulevard Pasteur in 1949, Le Librairie des Colonnes has been the premiere bookshop in Tangier, Morocco. Literary icons from Tangier's past and new authors have passed through its door: Paul Bowles, Jane Bowles, Mohamed Choukri, Mohammed Mrabet, Tennessee Williams, William Burroughs, Tahar Benjelloun, Jean Genet, John Hopkins and others. Moroccan writers’ books are also featured at Le Librairie des Colonnes. Le Librairie des Colonnes has been managed over the decades by a series of people: Isabel and Yvonne Gérofi, Rachel Muyal, and Simon-Pierre Hamelin. When I visited the bookshop in October 2021, a long-time clerk at the front desk informed me that there are no books in English at all. I asked him where Simon Hamelin was, and he shrugged his shoulder that he didn’t know. This seems unbelievable as certainly this unfriendly clerk at the front desk would know something. Sadly, this famous Tangier bookshop now seems to be poorly run and it is staffed by unfriendly and unhelpful employees. The Tangier bookshop underwent a major renovation in 2009 after it was bought by Pierre Bergé, the long-time business partner of clothing designer-couturier and philanthropist Yves Saint Laurent, who owned two villas in Tangier in addition to residences in Marrakech and France. After Bergé's death, in September 2017, the landmark Tangier bookshop was bought by Moroccan businessman and art collector Fadel Iraki. Unfortunately, under his ownership, there are almost books in English for the numerous English-speaking tourists and residents, which is most regretable. Even worse, there are no books at Le Librairie des Colonnes by Tangier's best-known expatriate writer and long-time resident, Paul Bowles, nor a framed photo. This is shameful neglect. The bookshop owner and its manager must correct this most unfortunate oversight and ensure that English books are always in stock. The bookshop is attractive even with the current dusty façade on the exterior (in January 2020, it really needs a thorough cleaning). The shop is not huge, but it is well organized and dignified in appearance. It is popular and considered the best bookshop in Tangier. Residents, students, and tourists alike come here to buy books. Le Librairie des Colonnes has a good selection of books in various languages, mainly French, but also some in Spanish and a few in Arabic. As stated above in this review, there is almost nothing available in English. Credit cards are accepted. The two employees can be a bit nonchalant and are not particularly helpful or friendly, and one always wears his cap inside. This is not the era when most well-dressed gentlemen wore hats outside and always removed them when inside.

The first and my last experience with them, which was also the worst!! I called to ask for a book and check the possibility of ordering them... The guy who spoke to me was so rude that he didn't even let me finish what I was saying before saying ''Repeatedly": No, no not possible. I would've appreciate it if he let me finish, then I would believe what he was saying was true rather than just trying to get rid of me!! I've never had such an experience with a library throughout Morocco.

When in Tangier, make sure to visit Casabarata Market, one of the largest local markets in Morocco. Similar to Derb Ghallef in Casablanca, this bustling market offers a wide range of products including food items like fruits and vegetables, as well as household goods and electronics. Considered one of the best and most affordable markets in the city, it's a must-visit for those looking for unique souvenirs or everyday essentials.
An authentic market in Tangier. You will eat for 20 dirhams, have a pomegranate juice for 10 and find anything you need (furniture, ceramics, clothes). We fixed our iPhone for 230 dirhams (the whole back was cracked) and they did it in 1h. Recommended if you want to see another side of Tangier

Very good, large local market with friendly, helpful stall owners. You can get absolutely everything, here!!
Emma-Kate M — Google review
Casabarata is about 10 minutes drive from the City Centre of Tangier. It's the locals' market and caters more for locals. There's less hassling but you can still find some trinkets to take home should you wish to buy wouldn't say it matches the Grand Soxco or other well advertised Souks in Tangier. One particular shop stood out for us. Stall 279. I didn't upload a picture of this gentleman as we didn't ask for permission but he agreed we take a picture of his goods. Very warm hearted, approachable and fair with his prices. Why 3 stars instead of 5? It's mainly because of the facilities. It's a general market for the locals and there are no directions for the stalls, no sitting places to rest, that we saw and also the fact that the other traders are opposite of the gentleman we saw at 279, inflating prices for tourists, whereas locals would pay a tenth of what you pay i.e. paid 40 MAD for a small sugar cane juice, yet it was a 20 or 15 for the locals. Some traders make a mistake bringing an order just so you feel bad and you pay more because they've already made it.
Taf. G — Google review
this market allows you to buy anything you need and want. By this i mean anything you need you will find here and at good prices. Make sure you look around as the prices to vary and you can definetely bag yourself a bargin here!!

Good place to buy hood quality items with cheap prices. They open Until 11am, but you better go around that time, because after they open, you can't find a place to park your car.
Aimane Z — Google review
This is a review from the POV of a tourist, not a local person. This market is like a giant superstore for homewares - washing machines, cookers, new jewellery, clothes, decorations, candy, refrigerators. It goes on for ages, includig some of the streets around. There are a few snacks places inside for eating. However if you are a person local to Tangier, this would be a one stop shop to get everything you need for your home.

Great Mall with Nice retaurants
Ismail S — Google review
The Lux Mall in downtown Tangier is located on Rue Mexique where the old Cinema Lux used to be. It has been transformed into a modern three-level shopping center with attention to details in its design: marble floors, upscale jewelry and clothing shop. There is a spacious cafe-restaurant on the third level that has a huge partially-covered outside terrace. From the terrace there are amazing views of Tangier and the distant hills surrounding the city. There are two Otis elevators with LED lights for those who don't feel like walking up the polished marble steps. The cafe on the top floor is particularly popular with young people and the coffee is excellent (12 dirhams) as is the simple food. The WiFi has an excellent connection. Unfortunately, the upstairs cafe with its outer terrace had very loud music blasting so I decided to immediately leave and find a quiet place. Even the ultra-modern Otis elevator had its hidden speakers blaring unnecessarily loudly. Yet another thing I noticed was a large children's play area near the cafe and snack area on the upper level, so I suspect during daytime hours you might encounter children running around and making distracting noise. This area also has several miniature play horses which children can ride for a few dirhams. On the 2nd floor level is a very large antique motion picture film projector protected by a clear glass display case that must have been salvaged from the former Cinema Lux when it was transformed into the Lux Mall. It is interesting to see this old machine on display. It could easily be in a film museum. During the warm weather months it might be best to sit on the outside covered and shaded terrace to avoid the unnecessary noise and distraction to enjoy your drink or snack in a quieter, more peaceful environment. The generous plate full of French fries are particularly hot and crispy and are a simple snack for just 15 DH. The WiFi works well in the café-restaurant.

Always crowded and I am not sure about the cleanliness level of this place, I always end up leaving right after sitting. Talking about he cafe on the rooftop. However many people say it's perfect since it has a place for toddlers to play while they can sit and watch them, I haven't done it yet.

Movie theater
Cinéma Rif, a beautifully restored Art Deco movie theater located in central Tangier, has been transformed into a dynamic cultural hub by artist Yto Barrada. The cinema houses two theaters, a video library, and a charming café adorned with vintage furniture and old movie posters.
We went for a tea and for a movie. The best price you can find (10 dirhams for natural lemon verbena tea!). The service was professional and friendly. Surprisingly, they allow smoking inside which we did not like but you can sit outside and enjoy the bustling square. The cinema itself is very cool and vintage. The guy at the counter spoke English and told us about the movies they had. We loved it

simply amazing. i always go there to get my work done and i’ve never been disappointed at the service provided. the service is amazing, their coffee is worth every cent spent. the location itself is amazing and it has simply become one of tangier’s landmarks in my opinion. i love it!

This place is incredible 😍 I went to watch a movie and drink coffee and soak up the full on vintage vibes. The aesthetic has remained the same since it was first built. People watching, coffee drinking, movies, what more could you want? Film tickets cost 40dh so good value for such a unique and iconic place. Must visit!

Awesome and pretty atmospheric place with cool authentic vibes of 50-60th. Good place both to have a cup of tea, or watch movie. I watched "The Lighthouse". Was surprised that it was showed there.

I loved it here in Cinéma Arif because it offers a cozy and nostalgic movie experience. The atmosphere is welcoming, the seats are comfortable, and the staff is friendly. A great spot to enjoy films in a relaxed and authentic setting!

A quirky cinema, the vibe is super cool and the drinks are very reasonably priced. You can just come to have a drink you don't actually need to watch a film. The cinema theatre does the job it has the AC. The team was very welcoming, we recommend !

Park
Mendoubia Garden, also known as Le Jardin de la Mendoubia, is a must-visit destination in Tangier, Morocco. This beautiful park offers a delightful experience for families and visitors alike. With its charming water ponds, lush greenery, and shady trees, it's the perfect place to spend a leisurely day with loved ones. Situated near Grand Socco, the garden provides a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.
A beautiful, neat and clean, well-maintained park with a wide variety of trees, just across a very busy street.
Shaik M — Google review
Mendoubia Gardens has some of the oldest trees in Tangier that are more than 700 years old. The surrounding gardens are a pleasant place to walk, with paved pathways and green lawns. Here, you can find a place to sit in the shade and relax on a hot summer day. Entrance is at the Grand Socco or from Rue d'Italie (Rue de la Kasbah) on the border of the Medina. Unfortunately, in 2016, about ten of the older trees in the Mendoubia Gardens near the corner of Avenue Hassan I and Rue d'Italie were irresponsibly and recklessly butchered with their tops completely sawed off, destroying their natural beauty. On July 31, 2017, while taking photos to document the butchering of old trees at Mendoubia Gardens, I was horrified to witness several cars, not motor scooters, actually driving on the public walkways. The city of Tangier should fix this situation and put up some no parking signs and make sure that no cars are parking in the Mendoubia Gardens. A good sign is that in November 2024, heavy-duty equipment was brought in. Grass and shrubs are now being planted to make this tranquil park more beautiful. The cars and trucks that had been parking here (with no traffic police in sight to give a ticket or tow the cars away) are now not being allowed to park in this famous garden. The trees in Mendoubia Garden that had looked like they were dying or dead due to sawing off tops and large branches are amazingly getting some new green leaves.
Kenneth M — Google review
Mendoubia Garden is more than a garden—it’s Tangier’s leafy soul. Ideal for quiet reflection or enjoying casual local life, it’s a peaceful yet poignant stop on any city wander. Perfect any time of day, but especially magical in early morning or late afternoon light.

Beautiful well maintained park. You can walk around or take a seat to enjoy nature in the middle of the busy city. The walking paths are clean and clutter free. The area looks well maintained and welcoming. The park also offers some great views of the surrounding area. There are also lovely little kittens in a section that are so sweet and welcoming. Overall a great way to spend some time on a sunny afternoon.

Inside the ancient walls of Tangier is a unique and gorgeous town full of life and culture. My mistake was going in a tourist group. In these groups you are easy picking for the salespeople trying to sell their wares. I recommend visiting alone or in your own group and you will see no one will bother you.

Bab Kasbah is a vibrant marketplace located in the oldest and most historic part of the city. It offers a wide array of eateries, shops, and lively vendors. The area is known for its typical Moroccan architecture and stunning views of the harbor and European mainland. Visitors can explore the Sultan's Palace, now transformed into a museum showcasing Moroccan art and historical artifacts. Additionally, the Kasbah Museum provides insight into Tangier's history through art, archaeology, and ethnography exhibitions.
Beautiful historical museum with lots of artifacts presented and good walks into various rooms and courtyard. Nice and well maintained garden. We spent a lot of time in the garden area and enjoyed the scenery and views of the sea. The area around kasbah is beautiful for walks.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bab Al Qasba – a historic doorway to Tangier’s charm! Bab Al Qasba is an incredible entrance to the old Kasbah of Tangier, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich past and cultural depth. The gateway itself is beautifully crafted, and stepping through it feels like passing into another era. The intricate details of the architecture and the stonework transport you back in time, setting the scene for an unforgettable exploration. Inside the Kasbah, you’re surrounded by narrow alleys, charming whitewashed houses, and inviting little cafes. The area is alive with a sense of history and a calm, almost mystical atmosphere, perfect for those who want to wander and discover. The views from nearby spots over the city and sea are breathtaking, making it an ideal place for both relaxation and photography. Bab Al Qasba is not only a landmark but a doorway into Tangier’s soul. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates history, beauty, and the warmth of Moroccan culture.

One of the Old city gates/Bab to the beautiful city of Tangier. Guarded by a security guard, not all vehicles are allowed. This is also the entry to the lovely Ibn-Batuta Museum.
Shaik M — Google review
Bab Kasbah – The Historic Gateway to Tangier’s Soul Bab Kasbah, the grand entrance to Tangier’s Kasbah quarter, is much more than just an old city gate — it’s a threshold into centuries of Moroccan history and Mediterranean charm. Located at the top of the medina, this iconic gateway marks the transition from the lively maze of streets below to the tranquil, elevated world of the Kasbah, once home to sultans, diplomats, and artists. Passing through Bab Kasbah feels like walking into a living museum. The gate itself, with its impressive stone arch and weathered walls, sets the tone for what lies beyond: narrow cobblestone lanes, whitewashed houses trimmed with blue, and glimpses of the sea from quiet terraces. Just steps inside, you’ll find the Kasbah Museum (Dar el Makhzen), a beautifully restored palace that tells the story of Tangier through its art and artifacts. The atmosphere around Bab Kasbah is calm yet full of character. Locals greet each other warmly, children play nearby, and travelers linger to admire the views or sip mint tea at a café overlooking the harbor. It’s one of the best spots in Tangier to feel the city’s layered past — Roman, Arab, Andalusian, and colonial — all blending seamlessly together. Tip: Visit early in the morning or around sunset for softer light and fewer crowds. After entering through Bab Kasbah, explore the museum, then wander up to the Kasbah viewpoints for an unforgettable panorama of the Strait of Gibraltar.

My family had a great time visiting this place. Just make sure you have a good tour guide that will take care of you and your well-being. There will be a lot of people trying to pressure you to buying things as you tour. Overall, a very beautiful place, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, everything is in this place. Just be ready to walk and explore the culture.

When I visited, this mall had mostly home goods and local women's clothing stores. In other words, nothing really of interest for a guy. Many spaces were empty at the time, so the mall has potential. In its current state, I personally have no reason to come here. But please don't interpret this review completely negatively. I'm guessing you could get decent deal on some local woman's clothes and home stuff, because you won't find many major store franchises here. But it's simply not my cup of tea.

A good selection of books, but mostly in French. One thing that bothered me: They don't accept payment by card unless it's more than 300 MAD. Obviously, to avoid paying TVA (tax).

Les Insolites is a truly lovely bookstore, warm, welcoming, and beautifully arranged. The atmosphere makes you want to linger, browse, and discover something new. While we wish there were more Arabic titles available, the selection in French and English is excellent, with a thoughtful mix of literature, art, and travel books. The staff really make the visit special: the gentleman who helped us was incredibly kind and attentive, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. Les Insolites is one of Tangier’s best bookshops that has a wide selection of books mainly in French, but also some in Spanish and English. The bookshop is well run and has an outside seating area where patrons may enjoy a coffee or tea during warmer months. I wish there were more books by Paul and Jane Bowles, my favorite authors who lived and wrote for many years in Tangier. Les Insolites is attractive and well-managed, and occasional readings and gatherings are held here. There are various artists’ works and framed photographs on display on the walls available for purchase and durable canvas tote bags.

The artist spoke Arabic, English, and French to my knowledge (though maybe more languages) and was extremely friendly. It was free to enter and the art was beautiful. It was more modern art with some pieces being more like a Jackson Pollock while others were closer to beautiful street art. Overall, a beautiful stop. I will say, a lot of the photos on google are incorrect—most of the photos you will see on this listing are for the Kasbah Museum for Contemporary art which is more north. Carpet store
Bazar Naciria is a hidden gem in Tanger, where travelers can find beautiful, large handmade carpets. Visitors have praised the excellent service they received at this shop, as the staff even arranged for a purchased carpet to be shipped internationally. Despite initial apprehension about the shop's credibility, customers were delighted when their high-quality carpet arrived in just four weeks.
the shop owner, muhammad ali, is the nicest man with the sweetest heart. even if you do not plan to buy anything, just chatting with him & appreciating his shop is a wonderful experience. he loves to make new friends and will treat you as such if you take time to chat with him & sometimes even sing & dance❤️ i bought a beautiful necklace for 150 dirham

They sold me 5 beautiful original thick rugs while visting. When the mailed them to me a month later, they were 5 beautiful thin replicas.... not the same, still beautiful, but not what they promised. Swindlers. Beautiful swindlers. Still have the rugs and appreciate them. Probably could have paid less, strange to be in a culture where deception of the customer is an art. Stranger yet to review them. Ah humans...
Laeo M — Google review
We recently bought a beautiful very large hand made carpet whilst on holidays in Tanger. Was very happy with the service we received, they organized to have it shipped to Australia for us. I was a little apprehensive as we knew nothing about this shop as we were just wondering around the markets and a man took us to this shop. Anyhow our carpet arrived in 4 weeks from purchase and we couldn't be happier with the quality
Debra V — Google review
We got scammed there. Paid 800 Dihrams for 2 small rugs. Later i found a guy who sold the bigger sized rug for 250 Dihrams and the same size we had for 200 Dihrams. So we paid 100% over market price in Bazar Naciria. If your fine paying the double amount of what it cost in other stores go there. If not i recommend you to buy somewhere else. With best regards 2 stupid guys from Norway who got tricked in their price scam.

They learned from me that if you lie to your customers you lose business. Avoid these swindlers at all costs.

(Translated by Google) It was a very small rug, and I was so shocked that they asked me for 1000dh. It was just the size of a mat in front of the bathroom... As I was about to leave, the price was lowered each time and I ended up buying it for 300dh. At that time, I paid 400dh in cash, but he did not give me change, saying he only had 90dh. When I was upset, he took out 5dh from his pocket and gave me this and a magnet, as if to comfort a child. For this price, you can buy a good rug anywhere else. It won’t be too late to visit several places and make a decision.

(Translated by Google) Our experience at Bazar Naciria was very warm 🥰 My mother bought a giant “tablecloth” (in any case we will use it as such at home), a beautiful medium-sized teapot, 6 tea glasses (+1 free) for 800 dirham. My brother and I each bought 6 tea glasses (+ 1 free) for 200 dirham. They let us choose the lenses we wanted (and not necessarily the pack with all the same lenses in different colors). They offered us tea and cushions to settle in and choose our drinks. We talked a lot with the managers, all as nice as each other! They packaged all our purchases well so as not to risk breaking anything and to facilitate transport by plane ✈️ Thank you again for your kindness!

Yassini Gallery is a hidden gem in Tangier, perfect for anyone seeking authentic Moroccan rugs. With an impressive selection of high-quality Berber carpets handwoven by skilled artisans from the Atlas and Rif mountains, this gallery offers both traditional and unique designs that stand out from typical offerings. The staff, particularly Adil and Muktar, are known for their friendly demeanor and patience, allowing visitors to browse without pressure while providing expert guidance when needed.
Very professional and helpful service. No pressure selling. Wonderful selection. Attentive, respectful and very patient. Best rug buying experience!! Don't forget to ask about the rugs upstairs. Love our rugs 🙏🏻
Clint W — Google review
Very friendly and patient staff that let us view many rugs of our choice from the large selection they had. Great selection of high quality all natural Berber rugs handwoven by Berber women in the Atlas and Rif. I initially arrived without my wife to browse and there was no pressure to buy. We returned together to browse more and decided to wait and discuss further, no pressure again. When we did return to make a purchase, they were very professional and grateful for our purchase. Included shipping to North America which arrived safely via DHL shortly after our trip. They allowed us to sign the underside of each rug to show there would be no scam or swap in transit. No regrets, love the rugs
Chesterfield C — Google review
Excellent place to buy genuine Berber carpets . Including with original designs and patterns as well as traditional patterns. Its not the run of the mill rugs you find elsewhere. Muktar was excellent in helping us decide what to buy and very patient. The nice thing about Yassini gallery is it is light and airy and the staff are not pushy unlike other carpet shops. However, it does not mean you should not haggle. Muktar drives a hard but fair bargain! The staff are hard working but not intrusive and will pack your rug into the smallest of packages however large the rug you buy. If you visit the Yassini Gallery say Hi to Muktar for me and enjoy the experience!
Philip S — Google review
The shop keeper was especially helpful and gave us some good background about rugs to know (including what a reasonable price range might be) even though we weren’t planning on buying any at that time.

Amaxing experience with Adil. I am a designer from Los Angeles. I purchased authentic antique Moroccan rugs from Yaddini Gallery and also had custom made Raffia rug and a huge custom stunning wool with tassels done for a very large room. Adil finished the rugs before the lead time he quoted. He was always available for any questions concerns I had. His prices are very good if you have a discriminating eye for unique high end rugs. I am beyond thrilled. I would recommend Yassini Gallery highly.

Sebou Art is a genuine treasure trove where you can discover high-quality vintage items. Each artifact holds its own unique story, waiting to be unveiled by Abdennasser himself. Stepping into Sebou Art transcends time, providing an extraordinary experience for all who visit.
I was pleasantly surprised at the professionalism of Aziz and his cousin. They have an eye for some very high-quality, authentic rugs and antiques. I came from the United States to look for some rugs and household items. I personally purchased two rugs, a couple blankets, and some antiques. Make sure to visit the upstairs section of the store to see more of their rugs.
Benjamin H — Google review
Had a super unpleasant experience here with the salesman Aziz. I was there for about 45 min looking at antiques and a few rugs and eventually said i wanted to think about the items i liked until the next day as the prices were very high even after negotiating. He suddenly flew into a total rage and started literally yelling in my face that I wasted his time. Considering the store was totally empty and he was sitting around smoking ciggies, this was insane and totally unprofessional behaviour. Avoid this place!!!!!! PS: I showed one of the “antiques” to a dealer of mine from back home and he said it was a fake so beware what you buy and do your research.
