Chiesa di San Trifone is Nardo's main baroque church, which was completely rebuilt after the 1743 earthquake. The exterior and interior are heavily adorned with decorations. While the main facade faces Piazza San Domenico, the side facing Piazza Salandra features the Fontana di Toro, or Bull Fountain, built in 1930 to honor the bull that supposedly discovered a spring and founded Nardo.
This church has been reopened to the public after many years (almost 20 years). Now finally thanks to the event organised by the Nardo city council 'Open churches 2024" it is possible to admire its baroque splendor

(Translated by Google) Evocative and captivating, the Church of San Trifone is a true architectural gem, combining spirituality, art, and history. The exhibition of works by Vittorio Tapparini within adds a highly interesting contemporary touch: his works, brimming with expressiveness and meaning, engage in a surprising dialogue with the sacred space. A successful blend of ancient and modern art, it makes the visit even more engaging. Recommended for art lovers seeking a unique cultural experience. Chiesa Rettoria Santa Maria della Purità is a must-visit in Gallipoli, with its Greek classicism exterior and dramatic interior. The church's limited opening hours make timing crucial to witness the violent biblical interpretations adorning its walls. Inside, visitors are treated to magnificent frescoes, paintings, ceramic floors, and an impressive chandelier. It is located in the historic center of Gallipoli, facing the popular beach of Purita.
Really nice church opposite a very popular beach. The atmosphere is amazing and it's worth spending a couple of minutes there. The entrance is free but you can buy some small jewelry with very reasonable prices to support the church.

Most incredible cathedral I’ve visited in Puglia for its richness in Pictorial Artistic Beauty. Highly recommended for Art Lover.

There are no words to describe the interior but you have to visit it to understand its beauty. The current appearance dates back to the eighteenth century. At sunset there is a very beautiful color on the facade. The church is divided into three naves, with two orders of arches supported by rectangular pillars surrounded by semi-columns. The columns and walls are frescoed with thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth century works. The wooden crucifix is very beautiful.Located in the historic center of the Salento city, it has been a national monument since 1879 and in 1980.

Welcome to NARDO CITY

(Translated by Google) The basilica was built in 1088, likely on the ruins of an early Christian church founded by Byzantine monks. The construction of this new church in the 11th century was prompted by the Norman conquest of the Salento region a few years earlier, ending Byzantine rule over southern Italy. The Romanesque church was elevated to the status of an abbey, handed over to the Monastery of Santa Maria della Sanità, which was inhabited by Cistercian monks of the Benedictine Order. In the 16th century, the church became a cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. In the 13th century, an earthquake severely damaged this church, destroying part of the Gospel aisle. This aisle was rebuilt years later in the Gothic style, using a local stone called carparo, which was harder than the Lecce stone used in other areas of the church. Also from the 13th and 14th centuries are some fresco paintings that can be seen in the side aisles and on some of the pillars. The most notable are the frescoes of the Pantocrator and the Madonna della Sanità, as well as the 14th-century triptych with the Magdalene, the Virgin and Child, and Saint Nicholas. Throughout the 14th to 17th centuries, several reconstructions and transformations of the building were carried out, both externally and internally. In 1743, another major earthquake struck, affecting the entire Salento region and destroying much of the city of Nardò. The cathedral suffered severe damage, with part of the bell tower collapsing and the statues in the upper part of the façade falling. The main façade was rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century. This portal is quite simple in its composition and is divided into two sections. The lower section features three lintelled doors, with the tallest central door flanked by two double columns supporting a semicircular pediment. Two small, simple rose windows open above the side doors, completing the ensemble with six square pilasters anchored on bases that support an entablature on which the upper section rises, featuring a central rose window with four pillars with Corinthian capitals. The building is crowned by a mixed-linear pediment with a large papal coat of arms. The interior, unlike its façade, is spectacular. The cathedral has a Latin cross basilica plan with three naves divided by wide square pilasters with attached semicircular columns, above which open semicircular arches on the right side and pointed arches on the left. Above these pilasters rises a short, blind wall that supports wooden beam ceilings over the central and side naves. Several chapels with Baroque altarpieces open in the side aisles, among which the Chapel of the Souls stands out, with richly decorated helical Solomonic columns. In the Gospel nave, the Black Crucifix stands out, a 16th-century wooden sculpture of a crucified Christ, about which there is a legend. According to popular tradition, in the 13th century, Saracen pirates sacked the city and entered the church, taking the crucifix with the intention of burning it in the square in full view of everyone. As they carried it out the door, one of the sculpture's fingers broke, and blood began to flow from the severed area. This caused tremendous panic among the Saracens, causing them to abandon their plans for looting and flee the city in haste. The apse is separated from the central nave by a large pointed arch supported by two tall columns that serve as a triumphal arch. Behind the high altar is a choir stall completed in 1590. The entire apse complex is decorated with frescoes by Cesare Maccari at the end of the 19th century. The cathedral has been declared a national monument. It's free to visit and open daily from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. It's well worth a visit.

The Church of Saint Dominic, along with the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and other churches in the area, showcases the impressive Baroque style. The Cathedral, which was originally built in 1090 and later renovated in the 13th century, exhibits a captivating blend of Gothic-Romanesque architecture on its facade. Inside this Catholic church, visitors can admire an abundance of frescoes and an ancient cross made from cedar wood.

The Chiesa di San Domenico, or Church of Saint Dominic, is a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Order. It is located in various cities, including Palermo, Italy, and Bologna, Italy, as well as other locations. The churches are significant landmarks, reflecting the history and artistic traditions of the Dominican friars. The church is one of the most beautiful monuments of the village of Nardò and deserves a careful visit outside and especially inside the church. This church has a very particular facade clearly made in different times and styles. You suddenly find it in front of you when you arrive in the square . The church of San Domenico is a church in the historic center of Nardo . The interior has a single nave with a Latin cross plan and three chapels on each side. Among the various altars, all redone, that of the Madonna del Rosario stands out with the fifteen mysteries placed on the altar on the left. Very beautiful .

(Translated by Google) In the historic center of the town of Nardò, we find a spectacular group of buildings representative of the Baroque architecture of the Salento region. Among these buildings, the façade of the Church of San Domenico stands out. The Church of San Domenico was initially built in the late 16th century, dedicated to Saint Mary. It was part of a small adjacent monastery of the Dominican Order. In 1743, a strong earthquake struck the Puglia region, particularly affecting the Salento region. Following this earthquake, the Church of San Domenico was seriously damaged, destroying much of its structure, except for the façade, one of its walls, and part of the sacristy. After this earthquake, it was decided to begin rebuilding the structure of the church, which originally had three naves, transforming it into a single nave, which enhanced the preaching of the Dominican Order after the Council of Trent. The façade of the Church of San Domenico is a magnificent example of Lecce Baroque. The façade is clearly divided into two sections built in different periods. In the lower section, the lintelled doorway is flanked by two small Corinthian columns supporting a semicircular pediment with two stone coats of arms. Above the doorway, a frieze decorated with geometric motifs and two angels holding a crown can be seen. The ensemble is complemented by eight fluted columns with Corinthian capitals on high bases supporting an entablature. But the most significant aspect of this lower order is its extraordinary ornamentation, replete with human figures, some of them grotesque, placed like columns that act as small caryatids. Many of these human figures are plump, angel-like children (puttis), leaning on each other and alternating with pagan figures in mock-like forms wearing plant ornaments on their heads. The upper section, on the other hand, is much simpler. With a large latticed window decorated with floral motifs, flanked by two niches with sculptures of Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine. The church has a Latin cross plan with a single nave, surrounded by robust square pilasters supporting an entablature above which rises a wall of windows supporting a soft green painted wooden ceiling adorned with paintings. On the sides of the nave are six small chapels, among which the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary stands out, with a 16th-century fresco by local painter Donato Antonio d'Orlando. The interior of the church is much simpler than the façade and responds more to the ideas of the Counter-Reformation that were established in Europe following the Protestant reforms of the 16th and 17th centuries, with the aim of strengthening the Catholic faith through greater drama in the paintings and sculptures. Outside the temple, on one side behind the church and facing Piazza Salandra, is the iconic Fontana del Toro (Bull Fountain). There is a legend about the origin of the city of Nardò that tells how a bull, by digging its paw in the ground, caused a spring of water to emerge, which became a spring, thus marking the place where the first settlements of what would become the future city of Nardò would be established. Currently, the coat of arms of the city of Nardò is represented by a bull with the Latin motto "tauro non bovi." The former convent adjacent to the church now houses an art school. Admission to the church is free, but the worship of the parishioners is always respected. This church's façade has mysterious symbolism and iconography, very elaborate and difficult to understand. The interior is worth visiting, but especially the details of the façade of this church are worth exploring. A must-see in Nardò.

Santa Maria Degli Angeli is a stunning church located in the historic center of Gallipoli. Constructed in the 17th century, it was entrusted to a confraternity consisting of fishermen, farmers, and artists. The church features intricate decorations and has been completely restored. One of its notable attractions is a mechanical organ dating back to around 1770. The church's interior boasts beautiful friezes and a striking polychrome case with gold leaf and copper green tones.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful fishermen's and farmers' church, with majolica flooring. Not as beautiful as that of Purità (which is unfortunately almost always closed), but to which it closely resembles in style and history, it is its younger sister: it contains paintings by Catalano and baroque papier-mâché jewels. But above all the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli can be visited every day. Thanks to those who keep it open (Original) Bellissima chiesa dei pescatori e dei contadini, con pavimentazione in maiolica.

(Translated by Google) It is normally open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is a gem that we found when we walked in front of Playa della puritá, along the walls that overlook the Ionian Sea. A simple façade, with a fabric that veils the access to the temple, invites you to open it carefully to be surprised by the combination of elements, and especially the beautiful majolica floor with a Neapolitan air. It has something sacred and beautiful. Built in the second half of the 17th century in the historic center of the city, the church was entrusted in 1662 to the brotherhood of the same name, made up of fishermen. During the 1700s, farmers and artists were added. Together with the Crucifix brotherhood, it organizes the procession of the Mysteries of Good Friday, which participates with the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. The façade is simple with two gabled access portals. In the center there is a large majolica panel that portrays the Madonna of the Angels with the background of the lighthouse on the island of San Andrés (in front) and the rocks of Campo and Piccioni. The interior, whose entrance is crowned by the 18th century counter-facade organ mounted in a stone choir, consists of a single vaulted nave in the shape of a star. It houses large paintings from the 18th century placed along the side walls. The works of the painter Diego Oronzo Bianchi from Manduria, the canvases of The Multiplication of Loaves, The Wedding at Cana and The Dispute of Jesus in the Temple, can date back to the 18th century. The main marble altar, made by Luigi Schiavone of Monopoli in 1865, is enriched with niches with statues of the Saints and the Virgin. In a glass case it is possible to admire the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, carried in a procession on the occasion of the Holy Week rites. The central altar is dominated by a canvas representing Saint Mary of the Angels. On the sides, the patron saints: Saint Joseph, Saint Andrew, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Isidore. Along the walls are the seats of the confreres marked by the corresponding offices: beautiful. On April 13, 2015, after years of closure due to remodeling and restoration works, the Brotherhood reopened for worship.

(Translated by Google) I really don't understand how, in a secular state where I pay taxes and contribute every day as an honest citizen, you are allowed to disturb the only day of rest of my week with your bells and whistles at disco volume. Being able to sleep until 9 is apparently a right that I am not granted in this country... Moreover, the escapes continue all day to mark the hours in an obsolete practice! BREAKING NEWS: we are no longer in the 18th century, we no longer need your public service that reminds us what time it is, we all have "perdicibacco" telephones! I conclude by saying that if the attempt is to bring new faithful closer to Our Lord, I assure you that what I have heard following your very delicate bells have often been unrepeatable blasphemous phrases and never "oh, the bells, they really reminded me that today I must still pray."

(Translated by Google) But can you explain to me the meaning of the multiple bell rings, of infinite duration before 9? But why should one get angry early in the morning with the impositions of the parish? What is respect for those who work at night, those who are late or those who simply want to sleep on Saturday or Sunday? It's already an imposition on the whole neighborhood to have to listen to bells, then at that volume and with that duration it really becomes an invitation to swear, especially if you are woken up. Do us all a favor, at least turn down the volume, and please, at least eliminate those useless long ringing bells in the morning.
