Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao, is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site located in the southwest of Mauritius. It is nestled amidst lush mountains and features a picturesque volcanic crater lake. Visitors can explore the area by taking a leisurely stroll around the serene lake while observing animated monkeys. The site is adorned with temples, small shrines, and statues of important Hindu deities.
Nice place for walk around a lake and see Hindu temples and gods. A picturesque crater lake surrounded by temples and shrines - a holy place for Hindus and the destination of their annual pilgrimages.
Monika K — Google review
It is very interesting to visit Grand Bassin in Mauritius, which is one of the amazing attractions to see the Hindu Temple and the beautiful lake.
Mirela P — Google review
Biggest Hindu temple in Mauritius....Nice place to spend for half a day....enough parking space....no entry fees...
Deepanjan M — Google review
The Shiv temple in Mauritius with a big statue of Lord Shiva is located at Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin. The statue itself is called Mangal Mahadev. It's a 33-meter (108-foot) tall statue of Lord Shiva, a replica of the Shiva statue in Sursagar Lake in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. This sacred site is a major pilgrimage destination for Mauritian Hindus, especially during the festival of Maha Shivratri.
Amit B — Google review
It's an interesting place, but everything is quite old here, and when we visited there was a large construction site and it was quite loud. There is not a lot information provided so you can just go for a walk. Walking up to the peek is nice and you have a nice view from up there.
Cynthia H — Google review
A hindu spiritual place to visit around south of Mauritius. The overall place is well developed and has a lot to be seen.
Nikhil P — Google review
We visited Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) on Oct 01 in the first half, and it was a truly divine experience 🙏. The place is home to the magnificent Shiv Temple and the towering Mangal Mahadev statue — a 33-meter (108-foot) tall replica of the Lord Shiva statue from Sursagar Lake, Vadodara 🇮🇳. The serene lake surrounded by lush green hills adds to the spiritual atmosphere 🌿💧. It’s one of the most sacred sites for Hindus in Mauritius, especially vibrant during Maha Shivratri when devotees from across the island visit here 🚶‍♀️🕉️. A must-visit place for peace, devotion, and beautiful views of nature combined with spirituality ❤️🕉️🌺.
Shashank A — Google review
Impressive site, especially if you want to experience the culture of the island. The entrance is watched by two massive statues of Lord Shiva and Lord Durga. Further into the site, you'll find additional statues and a temple next to a pretty lake. One piece of advice, please don't do the typical tourist things...show respect as this is a religious site.

Crater
Nestled about 15 kilometers from the vibrant Grand Bassin, Bassin Blanc is a captivating volcanic crater that beckons travelers seeking a quick yet memorable stop. While it may not boast extensive activities or sweeping vistas, its unique landscape offers an excellent backdrop for photography enthusiasts. This spot is perfect for those on the go who want to capture the essence of Mauritius's natural beauty in just a brief visit.
Bassin Blanc Volcano Crater is a great spot for a quick stop and a few photos. The crater itself is interesting, but it doesn’t offer much in terms of activities or views. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a brief visit and want to capture a unique landscape in your pictures. If you’re passing through, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the site, but don’t expect to spend a lot of time there.
Ihar B — Google review
Can’t fault this volcanic crater lake because it’s doing exactly what a volcanic crater lake does, it just sits there and lakes. The water is very brown; you wouldn’t swim in it. In fact you wouldn’t go anywhere near it but, it is on a road in between other cool places so you may as well stop and stretch your legs and look at it for 30 seconds just to break up your drive. The smallest and least significant volcanic feature on this island, I would not make a day trip for it but I will not judge it because it’s just being itself.
Stephan G — Google review
A quick stop at Bassin blanc. Very accessible on the road. Free parking and no need to walk a lot. Great discovery. But it was heavily raining
Noorun H — Google review
Another crater lake after Grand Bassin. Small yet has its particular eerie feel. Sadly remembered for a tragic incident. But worth a quick glance while you're on the scenic route.
Shanjeev P — Google review
Bassin Blanc is an extinct volcano crater located in the Savannah district. It is few kilometers away from "la vallée des couleurs". It is now used as a water lake.
Makoona A — Google review
The drive to the place is amazing. The road is decent and traffic is bearable. There is not much else to do besides just the crater itself. There are hiking trails that go down to the crater itself. But it's slightly dangerous.
Naveed H — Google review
Be aware there is no indication or direction marker to the place. No path or road as such. That place was made famous by the murder and death of a couple decades ago known as the murder of Bassin Blanc but to this day the area is still unaccessible.
Dr M — Google review
Amazing place😍...the trip to it is challenging💪 but totallly worth it👍. It's like a piece of paradise 💦🌲but it would be better if we could jump 💡and enjoy the water 🌊💕🌞😎

Restaurant
La Bonne Chute Restaurant & Bar is a lovely seafood and European cuisine restaurant located in Mauritius. It's known for its wonderful host and good food, making it a great place to visit for a delightful dining experience. The restaurant offers a vibrant atmosphere with live bands, guest DJs, and amazing Mauritius food, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the nightlife or have dinner in Mauritius.
We had an unforgettable experience at La Bonne Chute in Tamarin. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Mrs. Juliette, the heart and soul of the restaurant. She took the time to share the beautiful story behind La Bonne Chute, which she has been running for an incredible 56 years! Her passion and dedication were truly inspiring and added a deeply personal touch to our visit. The food was absolutely delicious, each dish bursting with authentic flavors and prepared with obvious care. The cocktails were expertly mixed, refreshing, and balanced perfectly with the meal. Service throughout was nothing short of impeccable – friendly, attentive, and professional. To top it all off, the desserts were divine – the perfect ending to a perfect evening. Whether you're a local or a visitor, La Bonne Chute is a must-visit. It’s more than just a restaurant – it’s a place filled with history, warmth, and culinary excellence. Highly recommended!

Excellent service and amazing food. We had a very warm welcome and everyone was so friendly throughout the whole evening. If you want to experience good mauritian food and mauritian hospitability then it's the right place to go.
Steph — Google review
We ate here several times during our holiday in Mauritius as we felt we got a true experience of Mauritian cuisine at this restaurant. Mrs Juliette and her staff were so warm and welcoming and remembered us each time we arrived. The atmosphere in the restaurant is so pleasant and you can see why it is one of the oldest restaurants on the island still operating. The quality of the food is second to none and the staff are very attentive to all customers. The restaurant is very clean and there is also an excellent bar area with live music adjacent to the food service area for those who wish to have a drink before/after their meal. If you are in Tamarin be sure to pop into this incredible restaurant!
Anthony D — Google review
This is claimed to be the oldest restaurant on the island; established in 1969. The service is faultless and the venue is spacious with numerous seating options and a large bar area. All that’s missing is a sea view but one cannot have everything. The food was tasty and beautifully presented. All in all it was a lovely experience and I would recommend people try it for themselves. The service truly is excellent and they made me feel special on my birthday.
Bronwyn D — Google review
Friendly staff, but too expensive for the quality and size of portions. Starters were good. The dorade was dry and tough. We won't remember the sausage and white rice. Massive mark up on entry level SA wines. Not really a cosy place, but ok.
Tim R — Google review
WOW! Our first of many visits… We live in the North but after seeing the reviews and menu we thought let’s embrace the journey and see what La Bonne Chute is all about… Owning a fine dining restaurant back in the UK we have high expectations when it comes to food. Both my partner and I were in awe of how DELICIOUS the food was. For starters Crab Gratin and Marlin Carpaccio. For mains the Lamb Shank and Wild Boar. For desert the Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Fondant. 5 stars for each dish and a special shout out for the Lamb. The largest and most tender shank we have eaten. To top it off the owners are nothing short of delightful! Friendly, welcoming and proud of their beautiful restaurant. Providing excellent value for money! Thank you for your exceptional food and service. How grateful we are to have found you and we will 100% be back in the near future.

With ample parking available, it's perfect for those looking to unwind while enjoying stunning panoramic views, especially during sunset. The area boasts a scenic running track ideal for morning jogs or leisurely strolls. Snorkeling enthusiasts will be delighted by the vibrant marine life just off the shore, although caution is advised due to occasional strong waves.

I really love this spot specially for snorkelling. The reef being so close to the shore, you get to see amazing variety of fish and shellfish. Beware the big waves though.
Ziyad G — Google review
It's full of discarded food containers , beer cans, bottles, picnic waste , etc. all around here. The site is quite reduced now, and not attended properly as a large stretch of this area has already been enclosed heralding a "Sheraton property project". This place is a. k. n. as Pomponette.

(Translated by Google) Tamarin Bay is ideal for a boat trip. But regrettable for the exploitation of dolphins by tourists. In winter a fleet of 20 boats, in summer around 50 to swim with the dolphins...
