Historic Sites
Signal Hill National Historic Site in St. John's, Newfoundland, is a former military defense site that now offers hiking trails and guided tours. The site provides breathtaking panoramic views of downtown St. John's, The Narrows, and the harbor. Visitors can also visit the landmark Cabot Tower on Signal Hill and enjoy dining at a restaurant nearby with paintings displaying Newfoundland's oceanic landscape.
I feel extremely blessed to live roughly ten minutes away from such a beautiful historic site, rife with information and rich in history. The hiking trails are what I enjoy the most; although, the activities throughout the grounds are plentiful. You can hike, bird-watch, check out the sunrise/sunset, visit Cabot Tower, watch the Tattoo reenactment - plus more! If you are heading up on a nice day, be sure to leave a little earlier than planned to give yourself time to find a parking spot. If a visit at night is expected, make sure to bring some extra layers in case the winds are high as it can be much cooler than it seems.

We visited Signal Hill twice – once in the early morning and again in the evening to catch the sunset – and both times offered a unique experience. Even though the place was quite crowded, it never felt crowded. There’s something about the wide-open views and peaceful energy that makes it feel spacious and serene. From the top, you get a breathtaking panoramic view of St. John’s, the coastline, the lighthouse, and the charming Battery area below. It’s the kind of view that makes you pause and truly take in the moment. The cool breeze, peaceful atmosphere, and stunning scenery made this spot perfect for anyone seeking a moment of mindfulness or quiet reflection. Whether you're into photography, nature, or just want to escape the city's buzz for a bit – Signal Hill is definitely worth your time. Highly recommended for both early risers and sunset chasers!
Pravin M — Google review
The walk to Signal Hill from downtown St. John’s is definitely worth it. You walk along the ocean and at the beginning you see lots of colorful, unique houses — really fantastic. Later on, you get breathtaking views of the cliffs. Make sure to bring something to eat and drink, because you’ll need it. There are some steep climbs and stairways to get to the very top — wow! But the view is 100% worth every step.
Marisa T — Google review
What a great place to visit, so much history, mostly things you’ve heard but so much more happened here. This is a must see when you come to this amazing province (a bucket list historic site for certain). Once you walk around the site it’s a great place to boat watch. There are plenty of vantage points to what the ships enter and leave the harbour.
Ian S — Google review
For breathtaking views, great outdoor activity and a history lesson I recommend. The hike up the hill on average is about 30 mins. A bit of a work out but worth it hen you get to the top. You can also drive up but I prefer to do the walk because of the scenery and the people you meet going up. If you’re in St. John’s do signal hill! I only took video this time going up. But here are a few pictures of my 8am morning walk.

Hiking Trail Review North Head Trail Loop - 2.5 Miles Trail head is very easy to find and there are loads of parking spots. There are multiple other nearby lots and intersecting trails. This trail itself is breathtaking and stunning. Truly gorgeous views and tons of local history associated with it. Rocky and lots of stairs, you will be sucking wind at certain points but absolutely worth every moment.
David L — Google review
Signal Hill in St. John’s is an absolute must-visit! The sweeping views of the sparkling harbor, rugged coastline, and vibrant city skyline left me speechless. The North Head Trail is a highlight, offering a scenic, moderately challenging hike with jaw-dropping ocean vistas and fresh sea air. It’s perfect for photographers, families, or anyone craving nature’s beauty. The open, windy landscape feels invigorating, and the nearby visitor centre is clean and welcoming. Just a short drive from downtown, it’s an ideal spot for a morning walk or sunset stroll. I’m already excited to return!
Pavel — Google review
Signal Hill and Cabot Tower are a highlight of Saint John’s. The walk to the tower from downtown isn’t too steep, however it can take a while. There is a road for cars and a parking lot too. The views from the top are worth it! You can gaze out to the open ocean as well as the harbour and watch ships coming by too. The hikes around Signal Hill are quite nice as well. The visitor Center near the parking lot has more information about the maps of the hikes and their length, difficulty level, start and end points. (The chocolates you can buy from there are really tasty!)

Cabot Tower, a late Gothic Revival sandstone monument, stands tall with its 50-ft. octagonal tower on Signal Hill, a national historic site in St. John's. The tower offers one of the best panoramic views of the city and has been watching over St. John's since 1900.
Just a quick ride from downtown, or a beautiful hike from downtown! Great views of the harbour, the narrows, downtown, and the Atlantic Ocean. A must visit while in St. John’s!
Sawyer M — Google review
If you're looking for a view that you'll remember for the rest of your days, this is it! St. John's and the Atlantic both look absolutely breathtaking! If you're planning on parking at the top, you should show up early. We never had an issue getting a spot. There is also a quaint little gift shop, reasonably priced.
Bryan H — Google review
Walking from downtown St. John’s up to Cabot Tower, perched on Signal Hill, is an unforgettable experience. The path is full of ups and downs, quite literally — but every step is worth it. From the start, you’re surrounded by colorful houses, the fresh Atlantic breeze, and stunning views of the harbour. As you climb higher, the walk becomes more challenging, but the scenery gets more and more breathtaking. Once at the top, the view from the tower is simply incredible: the vast ocean, the strong wind, and the historical feel of the place make it all the more special. In short, it was a wonderful walk — tough at times, but absolutely worth it. If you’re in St. John’s, don’t miss it. Put on your walking shoes, take your time, and enjoy one of the most iconic spots in Newfoundland.

Lots of hiking trails, beautiful views of the Harbour. Difficulty to find parking in busy season. Gift shop in the tower, No washrooms at the tower. You will need to go to information centre down the hill
Jason — Google review
Cool spot, great little gift shop and a cool rooftop patio.... It's kind of a tourist 'must do'. Take heed you need to be part mountain goat if you do any hiking, also take a hat because it's windy.
B.R. N — Google review
This is quite small but it's free to enter. On a windy day, you can have a short respite here. It's got a few interesting informative displays. The views from the roof are good on a clear day.
Martin H — Google review
Breathtaking view of the whole city of St John’s and the wild Atlantic Ocean! It gets windy up there so come prepared! Say hi to Sable the Newfoundland dog!!!

Great views from there. This is the landmark where Marconi received a wireless signal from Europe. Tesla did it years earlier but didn't patent it. Still, this is the place that proved to the world that radio was possible

Perched on a hilltop, The Rooms in St. Johns is a multifaceted cultural center housing the Provincial Museum, Archives, and Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador. This modern facility offers interactive programs and exhibits that showcase local art, natural history, and cultural heritage. Visitors can engage in various activities such as meeting Newfoundland dogs, sampling local cuisine, enjoying traditional music performances, and exploring the province's contribution to air travel development.
We visited The Rooms in St. John's, yesterday. It was Canada Day, and entry was free — we didn’t know that in advance, so it was a nice surprise! The place was beautiful and very interesting. It includes two art galleries and three museum sections. If you enjoy museums, this is definitely a place you'll love. To explore everything properly and take your time reading through the exhibits, expect to spend at least two hours or more. The washrooms were clean, and the gift shop was lovely, it had a great selection of local products at reasonable prices, which isn’t always the case in museum gift shops. Highly recommended for anyone visiting St. John's!
Maryam A — Google review
I visited a few weeks ago with my child and had a great time. The WWI exhibit for the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was well put together and very informative. They had also many activities for children throughout. It was interesting to see all the Canada Games medals in the archives area. The view of the harbour was great too.
Kirk H — Google review
A true gem in the heart of St. John's, The Rooms is an absolute must-visit for locals and tourists alike. The experience begins before you even step inside; the building itself is a gorgeous piece of architecture that beautifully complements the city's skyline. One of the first things you'll appreciate is the fair and reasonable admission price. It’s great value for the quality and scale of the facility. They also have special times when students can get in for free, which is a fantastic initiative to make arts and culture accessible to everyone. Once inside, the art gallery and museum collections are simply stunning. Everything is so wonderfully put together and immaculately kept. You can feel the passion and care that goes into every exhibit. It's clear that whoever is in charge of the galleries has a great love for what they do, as the attention to detail is evident everywhere you look. It makes for a truly immersive and enjoyable experience as you explore Newfoundland and Labrador's rich history and vibrant arts scene. Beyond the exhibits, the amenities are top-notch. The gift shop is incredibly cute and boasts a wide selection of amazing Newfoundland merchandise, as well as items specific to The Rooms. And while it deserves its own separate review, I have to mention that the on-site cafe is amazing. Overall, The Rooms is a world-class facility that St. John's should be incredibly proud of. I can't recommend it enough.
Kenneth G — Google review
Fantastic museum, I really enjoy the art gallery of the Newfoundland local artist. Amazing pieces. And we learned about the history of indigenous people. It was so touching. And we found the interaction between the public the organizers is also very interesting. Ppl are creating their art pieces in The Rooms at night on Friday. Then there’s a wall full of their artwork.
Kay D — Google review
A very interesting museum on 3 floors. Here you will learn a lot about the First World War and the participation of Newfoundlanders in it, and also get acquainted with the animal world of the Arctic. There are 2 art galleries, a fairly large cafe and a large sports exhibition.
Yuliia — Google review
The Rooms turned out to be one of the must explore stops in St. John’s. I spent a couple of hours exploring and could’ve easily stayed longer. The exhibits on Newfoundland’s history, especially the personal artifacts from people before and during the world wars, really made me pause. The whale section was another highlight, something you don’t forget quickly, the carved whale skull alone is massive, stretching several feet across, and it really gives you a sense of just how enormous these creatures are. And of course, the view from upstairs is worth the visit on its own, looking out over the harbour and Signal Hill is just beautiful. If you like reading through every exhibit, plan for most of a day. Otherwise, a few hours is enough to get a real feel. Either way, it’s a place that leaves an impression.
Ramya S — Google review
First time there. A beautiful, modern museum in the heart of St. John’s. Full of historical artifacts, arts and educational facts about NFLD. The restaurant there produces delicious food with an outstanding view of the harbour and Signal Hill. Good for all ages!
N T — Google review
Very well put together museum with a few floors to explore. There's even a bistro type restaurant on the top floor to eat or have food and drink. This is one place I wanted to visit on my trip and it certainly didn't disappoint. There was so much information about the island with so many exhibits and explanations to go with everything. It's an awesome place to visit if it's your first time visiting and want to spend an afternoon or the day somewhere by yourself or others. It was also surprisingly clean with how big it is. I don't think I even got to see everything but my favorite is seeing all the preserved artifacts of real life things they used to use over the years for transport etc.

Lovely spot for a skate and they have music playing around the loop. The park is nicely decorated as well.

Bannerman playground is a fun kids playground. Park was packed when we went. Seems to be a local meeting place for friends and families with their kids.

It's a nice park close to downtown St John's with well defined trails and informative plaques related to colonial history.

Absolutely lovely place to visit by yourself or with family (kids and pets). Get in touch with nature and admire its beauty while relaxing in the serenity of the greenery all around.
Faaiza M — Google review
Great place to relax, smell trees and flowers, and let the kids enjoy a wonderful playground. There's parking nearby too, which is great. Highly recommend a visit to this park.

A nice place for relaxing, grassy areas, not too huge park but close to downtown, I can even walk here from my hotel. Lots of people spend time here during summer...really nice place
Deasy D — Google review
A beautiful park full of amenities for all! A pool and splashpad, the loop (which is great for kid's scooters and rollerblading in the summer), a baseball diamond, the bandstand and beautifully upkept grasses and gardens throughout the park make Bannerman a special place in the heart of the city.

Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site, located in St. John's, is a museum that delves into the history of lighthouses and their significance in maritime navigation. Housed in a restored 1836 lighthouse, the museum features exhibits on navigation, communication, and sea safety. Notably, visitors can explore original fog alarm machinery at The Fog Alarm exhibit and learn about semaphore communication at The Signal Station.
Beautiful historical spot with stunning views! We visited Cape Spear Lighthouse yesterday and had a great experience. The site is full of fascinating details, especially inside the lighthouse house — it really gives you a glimpse into the past. The view over the Atlantic Ocean is absolutely breathtaking. We were lucky enough to spot whales from there! The house tour was free yesterday, no ticket needed. There’s a parking area, a gift shop, a small art gallery, a cozy café, and clean public restrooms in the lower area. Overall, it’s a must-see if you're in the area. Highly recommended!
Maryam A — Google review
We were there in early September, on a weekday, so there weren't many people. The place itself has an interesting military history, which you can read about on the information displays. And the nature and ocean views are just fantastic! You can come here on your own (there is parking) or book a tour from St. John's.
Yuliia — Google review
We chose a rainy, foggy, windy and cold day to visit this Easternmost point of North America. But we were not deterred. We enjoyed visiting the historic lighthouse and exploring the many vantage points of this beautiful location. I was particularly interested in Fort Cape Spear's World War Two history as a coastal defence artillery battery. Some of the guns are still there, as well as ammunition bunkers and tunnels. We didn't see any whales because, frankly, we couldn't see the water because of the fog. Otherwise, it was a great place to visit.

Amazing walking trails and lighthouses! Walk along the coast. Around the lighthouses. See the old gun batteries from WWII (what’s left of them) and stand at the eastern most point in Canada. Trails are easy walking, some steps and inclines. Well worth the visit.

such a wonderful place, lots of history and incredible scenery, we had fantastic weather so it was even more amazing. and to be at the most eastern point in north america, WOW. i would definitely recommend stopping here on your tour on this beautiful province.

You can’t go wrong by standing at the most eastern point in North America. They have done an amazing job putting in boardwalks and stairs on most of their uphill climbs. Just an awesome place for sightseeing and hiking.

Beautiful scenery. We observed many whales jumping, blowing air, and flicking their tails! Although binnoculars would definitely help with the experience. Many people around but not overwhelming. We didn't visit the tourist sites as we had short timelines. Gorgeous spot. Eastern most spot in North America!! Worth the drive, about 20 minute drive outside St. Johns.

Located at 325 Duckworth Street, The Duke of Duckworth is a vibrant and lively pub in St. Johns, Newfoundland. It has been an integral part of the city's social scene for over 25 years. The cozy interior features a small bar, dining area, and pool table. The pub offers classic bar bites and an extensive selection of draft beers. However, when it comes to the best Fish & Chips in St.
Friendliest loveliest people my husband wanted to come here because of television series Republic of Doyle we stopped in for a beer and an appetiser cod bites. It is more like a meal. It was huge portion. Great atmosphere, nice vibes. You can get your pint engraved with any picture you want. It was fun. I guess you need to have a good head of foam so we chose Guinness poured by an expert. Fish chowder with out shell fish! It was delicious. We plant to return here tomorrow! Came back 2 days later the fish and chips were perfect!!
Carolyn E — Google review
Down the steps; nearly always a queue - BUT worth it. Great atmosphere and great servers. Have Premier league football matches on multiple screens. Had the Newfoundland special of Fish and chips with a side of gravy and dressing (which is how locals eat their fish+chips Chips). I was skeptical but it was really good. RECOMMEND
Tarun Y — Google review
I tried the fish and chips at The Duke of Duckworth in St. John’s, and it was a treat. I had fresh cod: one perfectly golden-fried and the other gently baked. The fried piece practically melted in my mouth, that wide-eyed moment of pure delight. The tartar sauce, possibly house-made, was far better than the usual kind I’ve had. I also got a side salad, which was fresh and crisp. Overall, the meal was fantastic, and the whole place gives off a cozy english pub vibe that made the experience even better.
Ramya S — Google review
It was a Saturday evening so tables were in high demand. I didn't realise how small the place was. I shared a table. The staff brought over a place setting, but never came back for my order. So I went to the bar instead and was served by a lovely lady. The fish and chips were as advertised - very good. So was the local beer.
Perry T — Google review
Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. It’s light yet flavourful - definitely worth the hype. Decent portion size as well. I got gravy on the side (not pictured) which was good but I don’t think necessary as the fish is good on its own, or with tartar sauce+vinegar which comes free. They also take AMEX. I’d come back and will be recommending to friends and family! 😋
Linda L — Google review
Great place! Went I walked in, I felt I walked in a pub in Europe. I had the pan fried fish & chip and it was delicious! Fish was well seasoned, tasty and perfectly cooked. Fries were also perfect. I accompanied my meal with black horse beer. Noah explained to me it is only brewed in NL. I remember the brand name from when I was a child and have not seen that beer for a very long time…. Down a narrow street, The Duke Of Duckworth is an iconic St. Johns bar that has been around for a while now. The first thing you will notice is the ambience. Basically, its your standard small bar with tapered history all along the walls. I decided to order their fish and chips with dressing and gravy. The fish was super moist, flakey, and fresh. While the batter was melt in your mouth, seasoned well, and had an airiness to it. The fries were also fresh and tasted even better with the gravy. I always cover my fish and chips with malt vinegar and tartar sauce for extra acidity to cut the extreme savouriness of the fried foods. Overall, everything was quite nice. The only downsides are the pricing. The fish and chips and quite expensive in comparison to a lot of other spots in the area. If you are a tourist, its a worthwhile visit for sure.

A local favourite, and for good reason! This cozy spot has a fun atmosphere, great staff, and absolutely delicious food and beer. We both went with the fish & chips, and you can choose fried or baked — we went fried. Our server recommended upgrading the fries to Newfoundland style (bread crumbs and gravy on top), and wow… well worth it! The fish was super fresh and flavorful. For drinks, we tried the famous Iceberg beer from Quidi Vidi Brewery, brewed with 15,000-year-old iceberg water. While the concept is really cool and unique to Newfoundland, the beer itself was honestly a bit mid in my opinion. I’d recommend trying other brews from Quidi Vidi instead. Overall, we had a great time here — fresh food, cozy vibes, and a true local staple. Can definitely see why both tourists and locals love it!

Located on Signal Hill in St. Johns, the Johnson Geo Centre is a science museum that offers a fascinating exploration of geological history. The center features hands-on exhibits that delve into various aspects of local geology, including glaciers and icebergs. One of its popular exhibitions is 'The Titanic Story,' which provides a comprehensive account of the infamous disaster, covering everything from the construction of the ship to the aftermath.
Lots of stuff to see, learn, and read about while here. The paid show was called Antarctica when I went and it was about an hour long which I enjoyed. The oil and gas exhibits were closed when I went but I still enjoyed learning about all of the different rock types and information about space. I'd recommend watching the quick 10~ minute free show before walking through it as it serves as a nice intro. Ended up spending about 2 and a half hours here (that includes watching the paid show).
Sparkling I — Google review
The Johnson Geo Centre is truly a gem in St. John's — a beautifully designed facility nestled right into the rock of Signal Hill. It's an incredible space that we’re lucky to have in our city, offering a unique experience that blends geology, natural history, and science in a visually striking and engaging way. The staff are exceptionally friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about what they do, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. One of the major highlights is the discounted admission for students and completely free access for Memorial University students. That kind of accessibility is something more attractions in the city should offer. The main geological exhibits are very well done. The rock and mineral displays are especially informative and visually appealing — great for all ages and backgrounds. The center does a great job educating visitors on the geological history of Newfoundland and Labrador in a hands-on and approachable way. That said, there are a few important criticisms worth addressing. First and most concerning is the smell throughout the facility. It’s hard to ignore the strong odor of mildew and body odor lingering in the air, especially around the carpeted areas and in the theatre. After spending about an hour inside, it became genuinely nauseating. It’s clear the carpets and general air quality need serious attention — it takes away from the otherwise great experience. The oil and gas exhibit, while interesting and informative in some aspects, is very one-sided. It strongly emphasizes how important oil is to our lives — which is undeniably true — but completely omits any mention of the serious environmental damage associated with oil drilling and consumption. Given that this section is sponsored by ExxonMobil, it honestly reads like corporate propaganda. There must be a part of the exhibit that acknowledges the environmental consequences and discusses possible solutions or greener alternatives. Presenting only the positives is misleading and irresponsible in an educational setting. Another major letdown was the new temporary exhibit on mythical creatures. While the concept and information are fantastic, it's incredibly disappointing to see that they’ve used cheap, AI-generated imagery for the visual content. In a city with such a rich artistic community, this feels like a slap in the face to local artists who could have created stunning and original work for the exhibit. Instead, visitors are greeted with generic, soulless, AI-generated slop — it’s disheartening and frankly embarrassing. Overall, the Johnson Geo Centre has so much potential and already offers a lot — from its impressive geology exhibits to its passionate staff. But it’s being held back by poor maintenance, questionable content choices, and a disappointing lack of support for real local talent. With some cleaning, critical updates to its messaging, and a commitment to showcasing authentic creative work, the Geo Centre could truly shine.

If you love rocks, this is the place to go. If not, you’re better off skipping as there isn’t much else to do. I thought it would be bigger subterranean but it isn’t as big as you’d think. There are plenty of displays and some hands on activities for the kids, but you can go through everything in less than 30 minutes. We probably spent more time in the gift shop than underground. Also, this was the only touristy place I encountered in St. John’s that did not accept American Express.
Jonathan L — Google review
This place left me completely amazed. Walking inside, surrounded by the mountain itself, felt almost otherworldly like stepping into the earth’s memory. The exhibits weren’t just informative, they pulled me in so deeply that I lost track of time and spent more than three hours exploring. What moved me most was being able to touch the rocks and realize I was holding energy and history that’s billions of years old. It’s not just a museum or information centre, it’s an experience that makes you feel small in the best possible way.
Ramya S — Google review
A real nice geology based museum. It documents the history of the earth through a geological basis. Very interesting and informative. After one visits the interior, remember to visit the outside grounds for more information and geological understanding. Overall, a unique visit and good experience.

When you are in St. John’s and vicinity a great place to visit for people of all ages is Memorial University's Johnson Geo Centre. Signal Hill is just up further so visiting both seems perfect as one wall of the JG Centre is made up of Signal Hill rock. One of my photos will show you. The Centre goes along way in explaining how NL was formed over time. Study of the region’s unique rock formations helped in discovering plate tectonics. There is also an emphasis on ecology and the exploration of space.

Take a tour of the brewery and enjoy generous servings of their refreshing beers while exploring the photogenic village and chatting with local fishermen.
Wonderful lunch at Quidi Vidi Brewery. Sun was out, bright blue sky, tried a flight a four beers and the fish and chips. Both perfect. Service was great and cost was reasonable. Also picked up some merchandise and beer to take home. Atmosphere, food and service get a five star. A must visit.

Extremely Disappointed – Poor Food and Service We had one of the worst dining experiences here. The problems were not just with the food, but also with the service. • We waited over an hour from the time we placed our order until the first dish arrived. That’s unacceptable under any circumstance, especially when the restaurant was not even at full capacity. • The Fish and Chips were a disaster. The batter was burnt, the fish inside was extremely dry, and to make things worse, one piece of fish wasn’t even fully coated in batter — it had a section completely exposed. One of the three pieces had no seasoning at all, and the others were salted on only one side. The fries were also burnt and bitter. • When I politely complained to the server about how overcooked the fish was, I was shocked by the response — they told me they “didn’t see anything wrong with it.” I had to point out the blackened batter and dry fries before they even acknowledged the issue. This level of denial and lack of accountability is very disappointing. • The nachos were overbaked to the point of being inedible. The top layer of chips was dry and hard, and the cheese had been cooked too long — it was scorched and rubbery. • The mussels were a joke — many were completely empty, likely due to being tossed around or overcooked until the meat fell out. They were just shells. • The Honey Dill Chicken Sandwich was also burnt and dry, with a bitter taste from being over-fried. • The only redeeming item was the Seafood Chowder, which was warm and decently flavored. But by that point, it was too little, too late. Overall, this was an unacceptable experience both in food quality and in customer service. There is clearly no proper kitchen control or attention to detail. And when a customer raises a valid complaint, dismissing it outright is just poor hospitality. We will definitely not return, and I strongly suggest others avoid this place unless major changes are made.

Great spot in Quidi Vidi Village with lots of beer options, a good vibe and nice views. Went on a Friday evening before a long weekend and waited over an hour to get in. Not complaining (we knew it would be busy), just giving a sense of how popular/busy this place is. Lots of great beer and food options. Would not recommend the Taproom Nachos (vegetarian), it was basically just BBQ sauce and chili mayo drizzled on top of a few toppings. Fish and chips were solid.
Nichole F — Google review
One of our last stops while visiting. We weren’t even hungry but had to try the fish and chips. The chips themselves weren’t anything to brag about, and had a bit of a fishy flavour so one can only assume they were fried in the same oil. However the fish was the best I’ve had in St. John’s. Perfectly cooked, lots of flavour, juicy and flakey on the inside. The only desert they had was blueberry bread pudding, which was quite good as well. Many options for alcoholic drinks, mostly made in house as well. The Service was alright. They seemed confused most of the time and more interested hanging around the register eating rather than actually serving.
Dave M — Google review
Great location with a very nice patio! I love iceberg beer and have tried most of the other brew they make. The Iron Cherry Sour and Day Boil are other great beers! Food was excellent! I only had tacos, they had some other great options that looked great! The place was very busy when I got there around 11:30 and it appeared they were going through some renovations. The Reno's didn't ruin the experience at all. Their merch spot could use some work. T-Shirt sizes seemed to be pretty limited. Still a great place overall! Can't wait to come back next year.
KG82 — Google review
Fair selection, and fairly high price - especially for the quality. The iceberg beer is definitely a novelty, and tastes like every other generic light beer on the island. Calm Tom and Day Boil are fair for IPA's. The Sophia Sour line is packaged wonderfully, but the tastes simply don't match the vibrant artwork of the cans. I won't haul it up a mountain again, lol.
Trevor W — Google review
Excellent Iceberg Lager beer and dinner! The beer was tasty and cold, and yes made with real iceberg water. The cod and chips were beyond perfect, crispy batter with plenty of tasty white meat cod inside. Probably the best we have ever had! And you can buy the Iceberg Lager to take home as well, cans and bottles. Highly Recommended!

Village pub and restaurant on the water in this little fishing village. Like most places here, make sure to call ahead to ensure they're open. Not everything is open or available and hours depend or crowd and weather. Quid Vidi Brewery is located on the water in this small fishing town. The main reason for my trip was to see the sunrise at Cape Spear Lighthouse, the first place in Canada to welcome the sun each day. Standing there as the sky slowly changed colours and the light spread across the ocean and cliffs was an unforgettable experience. The air was crisp, the waves were steady, and the whole scene felt both peaceful and powerful. Visiting Cape Spear for sunrise made the trip feel complete, and it is a place I would tell anyone to put at the top of their list.

The East Coast Trail - Sugarloaf Path offers a mix of moderately challenging and fairly easy hikes, with beautiful views and walking-friendly trails. The trail leads to the entrance of Quidi Vidi and the top of the mountain, providing incredible sights and opportunities to submerge into the ocean. While some parts may be a bit confusing, it's worth it for the breathtaking views, including those of Cape Spear National Historic Site. Proper footwear is recommended due to bumps and rocks along the trail.
A wonderful trail on a sunny day. There are stairs on this walk and some parts that require you to half-climb a little bit. It is definitely worth it though, there are many view points to take many pictures and enjoy the waves crashing against the rock. There are signs helping you to stay on the paths. I didn't walk all the way but turned around about an hour and a half in. The trail can be reached by public transport (Taking bus 15) and can be reached within 10-15 minutes of walking from the bus.
Sonja H — Google review
Beautiful views all along, moderate but technical. Some scrambling up rocks and steep stairs but doable for any moderately fit person. Hiking boots and hiking pole recommended. Good signage. Some steps and planks in disrepair but totally doable. We only did the first couple km of this 8 km trail (out and back total of 16 km), but views were gorgeous and worth it.
Katia J — Google review
There is no billing on this trail. Important because trail forks and government sites list it as bikable. See photos. Nice views and great spot but not for bikes. Parking. Busy on Sunday. Cute harbor right there.
John B — Google review
Gorgeous but not easy… many steps and very uneven paths. Great if you’re in shape and have solid ankles. Wear the right gear.
Tati A — Google review
We did a quick hike here before sunset and it has a beautiful view of Quidi Vidi. The trails aren't as nicely maintained as some of the nearby trails so I would recommend wearing close-toed shoes with proper grip. The trail does go on for a bit but I imagine for most people it'll just be a quick out-and-back hike.
Andy Z — Google review
I absolutely love this trail, however it's in some rough shape and needs a little TLC. There is a bridge at one point and the steps to access it are damaged, they are manageable but be aware you will need to hop across the hole in the steps. Many stairs along the path are damaged, again they are manageable but just be very cautious, give yourself ample time to be safe. The scenery is worth every step.
C. B — Google review
Great views, great hike. Careful balancing on the slippy rocks as you go up the trail head.
Carl W — Google review
Amazing trail. If you go right at the first fork, you will find a moderately challenging path that leads to the entrance to Quidi Vidi. The hike can be a bit challenging if you aren’t a fan of bumps and rocks. If you go straight, you will find a fairly easy hike that leads you to the top of the mountain. If you have the shoes for it - go. You will not regret it. It’s a beautiful area with incredible sights and a walking friendly trail. You can’t beat the view from here!

Quidi Vidi Lake, located at the east end of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, is a popular spot for various activities and events. It is best known for hosting the annual Royal St. John's Regatta and is a favorite location for walking and picnicking. The area also hosts several festivals such as the George Street Festival, Busker's Festival, and Wreckhouse Jazz and Blues Festival during the summer months.
The perfect afternoon refuge spot. Busy in the summer and at the time around the Regatta Day (first Wednesday of August). The trail around the lake is beautiful and offers some nice views. There's a skate and a bike park, a space for pets - plenty of stuff to do for everyone. Walk along the trail right to the end to reach The Wharf and the old Quidi Vidi village, where the lake opens up into the ocean through the hills - a beautiful sight. Here's where you'll also find the famed Quidi Vidi Brewery.

Located at 230 Signal Hill Road in St. Johns, the Ladies Lookout Trail is a popular 1.3 km loop that offers stunning views of the rugged coastline and seascapes. The trail features some steep and rocky sections, so hikers are advised to proceed with caution. It connects with the Burma Road Trail and provides opportunities to spot bald eagle nests and blueberries along the way.
We hiked the Ladies Lookout Trail from the top at Cabot tower, to bottom, and then headed to Quidi Vidi. The last little bit of the trail isn’t that exciting, but the ocean views for the first 80% coming down were stunning. We saw a young eagle learning to fly and many beautiful seascapes. Highly enjoyable.

This absolutely stunning trail from Signal Hill is highly recommended. We walked to SH so it was a great opportunity to ditch a vehicle and enjoy the area. The remarkable views along this trail and North Head were just gorgeous. Once you start heading downhill you'll be in some lovely forest settings with great trees and bushes nestled right into nature on all sides. The path is rugged in some parts with rocks sticking out but managable if you watch your footing. Other areas as clear rock paths or wooden stairs. The path exits on to Burma that will lead to Quidi Vidi. We enjoyed the actual walk to QV more than QV itself!

The North Head Trail is what people think when they think about hiking at Signal Hill, and sure, I’ve done that one a million times. But the Ladies Lookout trail is special, for a bunch of reasons. If you don’t take the route out to Cuckold’s Cove, you either start or end with George’s Pond, pictured here like something out of a Viking seascape. If you want it tougher, go up-hill. I found this extremely rewarding despite the seven thousand steps that would put High Hrothgar to shame. There are a bunch of things to see on your way—lookouts, Inuksuks, heritage markers, and even an eagle’s nest. When you get to the top you’re at scenic Signal Hill and could easily descend back down to George’s Pond, or even the North Head Trail if you were so inclined. Someone needs to put a cafe in at the top of that hill though 😂

The initial 3.5 km of the trail leads to a picturesque lighthouse, with opportunities to witness waterfalls, a natural geyser, and stunning ocean vistas as you continue along the path.
Beautiful trails rich in nature and wildlife. However, it is partially flooded in many places so high waterproof boots are a must during rainy seasons
Mykyta R — Google review
Beautiful but strenuous trail. Loads of amazing views and plenty of whale sightings. Full path to Bay Bulls from Shoal Bay Road entry is about 24 km. Shoal Bay Road is a difficult 6.6 kms of rolling rocks before you hit the actual East Coast Trailhead. Took about 10 hours in total with almost an hour lunch break at the spout. The spout was worth the walk, which took us about 4 hours to reach from the starting point of Shoal Bay Road.

This is a fantastic trail. Now one of my favourites. We walked out to the lighthouse and saw puffins and whales along the way. The path is mostly easy, with some difficult patches and rocks you have to navigate. But it is well worth it. The path is mostly by the ocean, with beautiful views throughout, beautiful plants and lots of wildlife. I highly recommend. The East Coast Trail is such a gem in this province.

Started at the South end of Spout Path in Bays Bull and hiked North. The scenery was amazing all the way until Shoals Bay Road. It is a rock path for quads. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t so long. It definitely took away from what was otherwise a great experience on Spout Path. As others have recommended, it might be prudent to start on East Trail Spout South Trailhead and turn around at the Spout. Driven by curiosity, I wanted to see the entire trail from start to finish. However knowing what I know now, I would start at Spout South and turnaround at the Spout. There are some great views north of the Spout but not at the expense of walking on Shoals Bay Road.
Life J — Google review
An extremely rewarding hike. The trail is strenuous but offers plenty of scenery for your efforts, including some memorable landmarks. The access trail is no joke, and feels like a mild hike on its own due to the stony path. The wave powered geyser which gives the route its name, The Spout, is well worth the visit (it was blowing strongly when I passed through). The official camping area is awesome, with 7 well constructed tent pads in various positions for company or solitude. Signs say no open fires, and to pack out trash, but unfortunately some people seem to disregard these requests. Please don't be one of these people. The abandoned lighthouse is a fun checkpoint. A sign on the door warns of (real) danger, so I do not recommend going inside and climbing to the top to see the view from up there. Be prepared for some overgrown sections, blowdown from storms, and stream crossings. Steep inclines, technical sections, and deteriorated trail structures demand awareness. Hard packed sections may have standing water during or after heavy rain. Search "Radar Base Abandoned Lighthouse" on YouTube to see my vlog of the entire hike.
R. P — Google review
This is a beautiful trail all the way through. So quiet and full of nature it almost feels like a different world. The walk to the actual Spout is a very long walk and you will need a lot of water with you if you plan to walk the whole way. It also takes about a full day so be prepared. As with most parts of the east coast trail there are parts where the terrain is a little difficult or the wooden structures are narrow or damaged so highly recomend hiking boots. My two dogs are used to the trails so we did fine, however it may prove difficult for less active dogs or dogs who are not used to walking across thin wooden pathways or over bridges, up and down rocky hills, etcetera. I do not recommend bringing children as there is a lot of overgrowth and roots and loose rocks to trip on. If you are an avid hiker or just love walking through nature this is a great place to do it.
Stacey W — Google review

Travelers have found this route while heading to the Fluvarium and discovered that it provides a scenic alternative to city streets for much of the journey.
Wonderful training !

I stumbled onto this path while walking to the Fluvarium. Although my GSP told me to go down city streets, I realised that this beautiful trail can take you most of the way. At the very end, I had to cross Allandale Road and then took the Long Pond Walk trail, but for large parts of the roughly 1-hour trip, I strolled next to a beautiful stream and by wonderful greenery.

YellowBelly Brewery is a brewpub located in a historic building in St. John's, Newfoundland. It has been a key player in the island's craft beer scene since its opening in 2008. The brewery offers house craft beers and serves wood-fired pizzas and burgers, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Additionally, YellowBelly Brewery provides brewery tours for those interested in learning about the beer-making process.
Had an amazing time at YellowBelly Brewery in St. John's! The atmosphere is unique—historic building, cozy vibe, and great downtown location. I tried a couple of their house beers, and they were excellent—fresh, flavorful, and just the right balance. The food was also top-notch; the wood-fired pizza really stood out. Staff were friendly and made great recommendations. Definitely a place I'd come back to, whether for a casual drink or a full meal.

It's a bit crammed, even upstairs but it is better upstairs. Everything (chairs, table, floor etc.,) was a little sticky though which was uncomfortable. However, the beer is good and they have quite the variety. I got their signature fish and chips and the fish is really fresh as you'd expect from Newfoundland but I would've preferred a bit more seasoning especially since it's supposed to be herb-crusted. The tartar sauce seems to be made in house and really carried the dish. I'd have it again ☺️ but I'm still looking for the best fish and chips in St. John's

First night in St. John’s I had to try this place. It was top of my wish list and the food did not disappoint. Started with a dip that was amazing, cream cheese, green onion, bacon and chips. Then we shared a two piece fish and chips. They knew we were sharing so that spilt it onto two plates for us. The fish was so good, light, flaky, the coating was not greasy. The fries were hand cut and really good too. The dipping sauce with the fries was a nice touch. The waitress recommended a really good beer that fit my needs. It was really busy so service was a little slow but with the amount of people it was understandable.

I just happened upon this place. Its a local brewpub. A great selection of beers. A very nice menu. Staff is friendly. It's just a cool brewpub to come have a beer and or some food. They have two happy hours. 3 to 5 and 10 to close! Gotta love it! I'm here for work and took drive downtown and found Yellowbelly! Glad I did!!! I ordered the wood fired pepperoni pizza! Another... "Glad I did!"

I booked a table in advance to come here. The place is very popular! We were in the old hall, where there were still traces of a big fire. It creates an atmosphere. If you want a noisier atmosphere, book a table in the main hall. The food is very tasty, but we came for the beer, which they brew themselves. There is a lot to choose from. Thank you.

One of our go to restaurants when in St.john’s. I always order the braised short rib, and it never disappoints. So much flavour, beef is literally falling off the bone! Pair it with Wexford Wheat beer, you’ll be glad you did. Be sure you ask to be seated in the Underbelly, the more secluded area downstairs.
Jeff B — Google review
I discovered this historic brewery through their website and decided to pay a visit—and it did not disappoint. Their beers are exceptional, even surpassing what I’ve tried in Toronto. I ordered the YYT Cream Ale, which had a uniquely distinctive aroma that stood out. As for the food, the salt and vinegar cod bites and the seafood chowder are must-tries. After all, you can’t visit Newfoundland without enjoying its renowned seafood.

Gatherall's Puffin & Whale Watch offers an unforgettable experience on Newfoundland's east coast, where North America's largest puffin and kittiwake colonies reside. With over 90 percent of the continent's Atlantic puffins breeding in Newfoundland, visitors can witness more than two million seabirds nesting and feeding their chicks during the capelin season from mid-June to mid-July. Additionally, whales follow the capelin into Witless Bay and the surrounding waters during their annual migrations.
Absolutely the best tour experience we could’ve asked for! From start to finish, this whale and puffin watching tour was incredible. The whole crew — the captain and tour guides — were super kind, fun, and full of energy. It felt like we got a bonus stand-up comedy show along with the tour! Even before reaching the whale-watching area, we were entertained with hilarious and informative commentary that made the time fly. Their explanations about puffins and other seabirds in the North Atlantic were detailed and fascinating. Same with the whales — we learned so much while laughing the entire time! The team was incredibly professional and knew exactly where to go for the best views and photo opportunities. The scenery was breathtaking, and we managed to get some amazing photos. After the tour, we also checked out a great little gift shop at the dock — with lovely handmade crafts and fair prices. Overall, an unforgettable experience — highly, highly recommended!

We had a super great experience on our excursion. We saw a humpback whale and that was so thrilling. My partner is in a wheelchair and they went over the top to ensure she was able to see and have as good a time as anyone on the boat. Always checking in with us. The puffins were difficult to photograph with my iPhone 16pro. But my partner had a steadier hand and got a couple. Thanks for a brilliant time. We booked this trip with my family.

August 16, 2025 was a significant milestone wedding anniversary for my wife and I. Back in January when we were planning what to do, we decided to spend a few days in and around St. John's. We covered all the must sees - Signal Hill, Cape Spear, George St, and so on, but we wanted to include something special for the afternoon of the actual day. It occurred to us that we don't see that many whales in the river that flows through our small town just outside of Ottawa, so we decided to book with Gatheralls. So glad that we did! While we enjoyed everything that we saw and did in St. John's, both of us feel that this was the absolute highlight! We loved the experience. Just being out on the ocean was a cool experience. The puffins and other birds were incredible. The crew were fabulous! The singing, the jokes and laughter, the information about the puffins and other birds was fascinating - who knew that a little puffin could dive up to 200 feet into the ocean in search of food - and the screech in ceremony was hilarious. Apparently there was a two-metre swell that day and I truly came to understand what the term 'sea legs' really means. We passengers were all over the place, hanging on to seats and railings while the crew was standing and walking around like we were on dry land. Impressive! Alas no whales. So zero stars for the whales, but five truly deserved stars for everyone at Gatheralls. If we're ever in St. John's again we'll go back to give the whales a chance to redeem themselves.
Robert N — Google review
What a wonderful touring company! Their staff are friendly, entertaining, and knowledgeable. They also have a fantastic gift shop in their main building. The boat ride was smooth and steady. We were able to see puffins even at this late in the season.

We totally enjoyed our Puffin and whale watch experience. We saw a lot of whales and 1000's of Puffins. They are so cute and funny to watch. All the Staff from check in to entering the boat were so friendly and informative . The Captain and staff gave us lots of local information and History and entertainment a few Songs along the way. It made for a lovely Newfoundland experience. The beautiful coast line was totally breath taking. We had a spectacular weather day as well. Thanks for making our first Newfoundland trip so memorable.
Randy — Google review
We went in the first week of September, which is “too late for whales.” Guess they’d already packed up and gone on vacation. So no whale sightings for me, which was a little disappointing, but the puffins made up for it. Seeing hundreds of them buzzing around the cliffs like tiny fighter jets was honestly amazing. The crew explained their habits and gave some fun facts too, which made it even better. After the tour, they did a Newfoundland tradition for first-time visitors, which cost about $28–30. Most of it was lighthearted, but one part… not my thing. They asked people to dunk a leg with shoe still on into a bucket of water, then dipped a puffin plush into that same water and had everyone kiss it. That part felt kind of eww, gross and off-putting for me. Still, the puffin tour itself was well worth it. Even without whales, seeing puffins up close in their natural home was unforgettable.
Ramya S — Google review
I enjoyed the tour so much that I did it four times during my vacations in Newfoundland. The crew is very friendly, funny and knowledgeable. They make sure you see every kind of bird in the area, and if they are around, whales. You'll get lots of explanations about what you see, and you will always find a member of the crew to ask questions. Some of them are very talented singers, too! The staff do a fantastic job to make the trip a great experience for all! I hope to be back again at some point!
Thorsten B — Google review
This was such a great experience for me, my family, and friends.  The crew, Captain, and the overall service was great! We were pleased with the way the tour guides spoke to us and made sure we got to see everything and we're doing ok. This came highly recommended by friends and I can see why. You can count on us to do the same! I would like to add that there was a person who needed accommodations for their wheelchair, I was touched by the way the crew took care of the individual, making sure the individual had the same experience and was not missing out on any of the activities. We got to see whales and puffins. As a bonus, we saw dolphins too!

Wow Ivana is an incredible server, she had so much character and charm! The food was fantastic. The chef is so allergy aware. Fantastic restaurant! You have to check this place out!!
Emma B — Google review
I recently dined here while visiting the city, drawn in by the location’s downtown prestige, the buzz surrounding it, and the requirement for reservations well in advance. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t meet expectations. The food was passable but not memorable—presentation outshone flavour. For the price point, I expected thoughtful garnishes, richer textures, or unique culinary elements. What we received felt more like a student-run kitchen rehearsal with upscale plating. Service was notably lacking. The host was indifferent, and our server seemed unfocused and detached throughout. It’s rare to leave a meal feeling like the staff would have rather been anywhere else. One odd moment involved a server, not ours, meticulously pouring wine into a shot glass before transferring it into a wine glass—a process that seemed more performative than practical, and did little to enhance the dining experience. The overall atmosphere gives the impression of a venue more concerned with image and hype than return clientele. It didn’t feel like a place with regulars—more like a one-time stop for tourists or students chasing status rather than substance. We tipped the minimum, though even that felt generous. There’s potential here, but it’s buried under pretense and inattention.
Michael M — Google review
We’ve had ~4 lobster dinners in Newfoundland over the course of our 9 day trip. They’ve ranged in price from 35-40$. Those came with the full lobster, sometimes partially cut, and fries or a salad. The Lobster here was $58, came with the tail split in 2, two claws pre cracked, and buttered potatoes. No forearms. Because they prepared the lobster, they didn’t give you any tools, but that also meant you couldn’t eat any leg meat. They prebuttered the lobster and it tasted good, but it was overall bad value. The tail also seemed smaller than the others we’ve had. The second dish we got was the fish and chips and that was good, but also more expensive than other places. This place lost two stars because of the bad service and how expensive the food was. Regarding service, they didn’t refill our water once and it took quite a while for us to flag someone down to grab another tartar sauce. Generally, it seemed hectic despite the fact that they didn’t have that many customers.

Went here for dinner with my fiancé for her 30th birthday. She wanted to try her own Lobster dinner for the first time. She really enjoyed it! I tried my first bite of Lobster ever from her plate and enjoyed it as well! I also enjoyed my burger. The cocktails were very tasty as well! I had a creamsicle and loved it. Only things for us personally were it was too dark of dark lighting and it did get very loud but I guess that just showed you that people were really having a good time! Next time l come return hopefully my income is good enough where I can afford to try on of their Steak dinners aha, because those looked delicious. But overall, great food, drinks, and staff. Had a positive experience!

Wanted to try this restaurant when we visited St. John's. It's a very cute place on Water St., comfy and cozy. It felt like everyone was new at this restaurant and didn't exactly know what to do. We had to summon our waiter x 3 to have drinks refilled, inevitably of which was the wrong order (a stout instead of Coors Light). No big deal, we rolled with it. Then came our food. It was barely lukewarm, but it was tasty. We again chose not to say anything and we ate it all. By this point, we accepted this wasn't going to be the best meal we had, but we were trying to be grateful and inderstanding if the kitchen was having an off day. When the waiter asked how our food was, we were honest (I had fish, my partner had gnocchi) and said we were happy to eat it and just wanted the kitchen to know that food could be hotter for other patrons. To be fair, the restaurant did offer to make us another meal, but we had already eaten what was served. Overall, this restaurant felt like a miss - we have been in town several days and have some amazing dining experiences elsewhere.

We stopped by this beautiful church as it was just up the hill from our suite in a Jellybean house. You can go in on your own and they had a young adult / student available to answer any questions. The outside with all the stonework and 2 large clock towers was magnificent! Inside they had many beautiful stained glass windows and a ginormous wood organ that is a feat of human ingenuity! Entrance is by donation and they have QR codes (barcode) that you can use your phone to donate $5, $10 or $20. Stop by of you’re in St John’s!

Couldn't go in because of a wedding, but looking through the door it seems like a wonderful Basilica. The exterior is very impressive, large and ornately decorated. It sits atop the hill and would have had the best view across the harbour when built. Sadly, city growth has limited that view, but it is still very good. The entrance to the Basilica is also impressive with a large arch and statuary. It's a good walk from the harbour, about 15 minutes, with quite a steep incline. Worth the walk.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, also known as the Anglican Cathedral, is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture located on a hillside. Designed by renowned architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, it was built in the mid-1800s and underwent major additions in the 1880s. After being destroyed by a fire in 1892, it was rebuilt to its former glory.
I came here by sheer coincidence and I feel so lucky. Turned out to be one the most beautiful places I ever visited. I doubt God all the time but I can’t give quantum physics credit for this encounter.

Stunning Cathedral!! A must see! Beautiful architecture, stained glass windows and organs. The wood ceiling and arches are amazing. Must speak low out of respect and due to voices that echo. Please video inside the Cathedral as I did...when I was recoding you could hear a pin drop as there was no other person around but when I listened to the video afterwards I could hear the pipes making beautiful sounds, foot steps walking on the old wood floor, (there was only me there in the morning) knocking sounds from around and echoes of odd noises. Amazing Location and you must not miss it. There are several other Cathedrals and Churches in St. Johns Newfoundland that are worth visiting. A few pictures provided of my visit 🙂

The Botanical Garden was not on our to-do list as it’s not mentioned anywhere on any “Things to do in St John’s” sites. But since we had a gap in our schedule, my daughter wanted to go see it. Boy aren’t we happy we did! We did all 4 trails and the garden. The trails are well kept and clean. The air is fresh. The hike is very kid friendly. I highly recommend if you like a little easy walk in nature.

It isincredible that this is not one of the more recommended places on blogs or vlogs. It’s a 15 minute drive from St John’s harbour. This is an absolutely beautiful collection of different types of gardens from rock gardens to Japanese style gardens. There is even a green house with a grapevine growing profusely with massive bunches of grapes. An absolute must for all the gardeners and those with botanical conservation and nature interests. There is a wonderful pollinator garden and beehive. In addition to the gardens there are trails most gently sloping and low inclines with lots of signs for teaching information about the wild plants and berries. Definitely senior friendly trails with exception one that is clearly labelled as rugged.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the botanical garden. The site was different than anticipated, with more walking trails - which I didn’t know about and hadn’t allocated time for. If I came again, I would give myself more time to enjoy them all. The main garden and Macleod trail were lovely. I appreciated all the signage and info at each garden - very educational. I was there at 9:30 AM on a Thursday and the gardens were quiet and peaceful. Staff at the front desk were welcoming and helpful. For a lover of gardens and flowers - this was the perfect way to spend a morning. There is a ramp to enter the main building, an electronic door opener for accessibility. The main path and boardwalk are level, making a lot of the space accessible, though it is not paved, and there are some hills, which may post a challenge for some.

So much interesting information, pictures and artefacts showing the history of rail and government maritime transport in NL. Also, they had a fun model train display that my 8 year-old spent at least an hour watching...(Actually, she was likely playing with the toy train activity stations beside it for most of that time, lol). A great history of the NL Railway. A family place with lots to see for everyone of any age!! My son always had a love for trains so we always took him here. A train inspired play area is located inside for little ones to have some play time during their visit!! A real trian (Not in use) is located just outside the museum. My Kiddo loves to play on it, great spot for pictures !! Also located near downtown, with Many places to grab a bite to eat after your visit

Located in St. John's, Newfoundland, the Newman Wine Vaults are a historic site dating back to the 19th century. These stone vaults were originally used for aging the renowned Newmans port and have been designated as a Registered Heritage Structure. Visitors can take guided tours of the vaults and enjoy complimentary tastings of port wine. The site is currently undergoing restoration and will feature an interpretation space showcasing the colorful history of the liquor trade in Newfoundland.
The short guided tour and wine tasting was lovely. The guides were kind and informative, and we had some fun conversation with our fellow tourists. Definitely recommend as a warm stop on a cold day.
Caroline S — Google review
Wonderfully informative guide. It is a short tour but very interesting! Plus the sample of wind was a lovely touch. What a nice break from the sun to learn a bit about the area.
Theresa D — Google review
Even though the physical space may be small, these vaults were larger than life with rich history and surprises at every turn. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and have a wealth of knowledge. The wine sample was wonderful as well, there was even an interactive activity. If you have 30min to an hour to stop by, this is definitely worth you while.
Paige J — Google review
Nice opportunity to learn about the history of port in St John's. Tour guide was very informative and we even got a little sample of port to try!
Julia B — Google review
Having visited Portugal, I can tell you the wine is authentic and offers a true Português experience. The tours are free and the hosts are very well versed. It is not an overly vast bond, so don't expect vaults and vaults and vaults. It is relatively small but offers a very vivid history. One taste is included, it is free. Unfortunately, you're not able to tip the servers for their hard work. It is a beautiful space, recently renovated and modern, to be admired.

The Newman Wine Vaults Provincial Historic Site in St. John’s is a quiet marvel tucked beneath the city’s surface—both literally and historically. Stepping into the cool, stone chambers, we were transported into a story that spans centuries and continents: how port wine from sunny Portugal found its way to Newfoundland’s damp climate, where it aged to perfection and was sipped by English aristocracy.
Sylvain P — Google review
Very interesting tour detailing the history of Neman’s Port and how Newfoundland became a pivotal point in the quality of this ruby port.
Lee J — Google review
Love the creepy vibe. Stone walls, low archways, jail cells. And the port was delicious. Learned a lot about the history of the former jail and how the Newman’s started make port liquor.

Fort Amherst, located on the opposite side of the harbor from Signal Hill, offers stunning views and is a great spot for iceberg sightings in late May and early June. The area also provides access to the East Coast Trail. The site features the remains of a historic fort and a picturesque lighthouse. While reaching the fort may be challenging, visitors can enjoy beautiful vistas of colorful houses, ships in the harbor, and even cruise ships passing through.
Exploring Fort Amherst in St. John’s was a highlight of my trip! This historic site, with its iconic lighthouse and WWII remnants, offers a fascinating peek into Newfoundland’s history. The short walk from the parking lot leads to breathtaking views of the Narrows, Signal Hill, and the Atlantic. The rugged cliffs and ocean breeze create a serene vibe, perfect for photos or quiet reflection. It’s a must-visit gem just minutes from downtown!
Pavel — Google review
Fort Amherst is a nice place to visit. Although the old WWII buildings are blocked off, they were interesting to see some 10-15 year ago on a past visit. There is a good view of the narrows, St John’s, and Signal Hill. I came here to see the sunrise in July 2023
Kirk H — Google review
The views are spectacular. We decided not to do the guided tour. We parked in the free parking lot below the site and walked up. Cool spot to visit for sure. Not a big place, smallish lighthouse. I'm sure the history is amazing, but not a lot to do here.
RobS — Google review
Went on a weekday. Walked all the way through for almost 50+ Minutes... You start at the Railway Coastal Museum and walk out of it when you already see the road and keep heading east. You'll come across the Coastal Guard station, Irving fuel terminal and some bits and pieces of the old navy base stuck on the side of the mountain. Came across construction too and the start of Deadman's path trail for hiking. Nothing else to see when finally reaching the fort, but a good view of the ocean, Cape Spear, and Signal Hill.
Jung G — Google review
A must-visit in St. John’s! Fort Amherst offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Narrows. The historic lighthouse, coastal trails, and remnants of WWII gun emplacements make it both scenic and meaningful. It’s peaceful, easy to access, and perfect for photos or a quiet walk. A little hassle in finding a parking spot. Highly recommend for anyone visiting St. John’s!
Ye Z — Google review
Nice view, after rain we saw rainbows. Don’t drive all the way up, there no parking on the top, and it’s hard to turn the car around.
Kay D — Google review
This short hike shows Signal tower escarpment from across the bay. Great views and neat seeing the house along the way. There is also a side trail that can go 22km if you are interested in a longer hike.
D R — Google review
Drove as far as where I can drive, the turn around was pretty hard, as the spaces were very tight. You had better leave the car at the parking lot. Did not get to Fort Amherst. There were some constructions going on along the road. The views there were beautiful.

Harbourside Park is a small urban park in downtown St. John's, offering stunning views of the harbor and the city. It commemorates Sir Humphrey Gilbert's proclamation claiming Newfoundland for Britain in 1583. The park features informational boards on the area's history and iconic bronze statues of a Newfoundland dog and a Labrador Retriever. Visitors can enjoy watching boats come and go from this vantage point or attend free lunchtime concerts hosted by the City of St John's.
I love spending time at harborside parks! 😌 There's something so peaceful about being near the water. They're a great place to relax and take in the scenery. Plus, you can often learn a lot about a city's history from its harbor.

The Works Aquarena in St. John's, Newfoundland, is a fantastic destination for water enthusiasts and fitness lovers alike. This facility boasts an Olympic-sized pool that meets high standards, making it ideal for serious swimmers. With two of the largest indoor waterslides east of Alberta, it's perfect for families looking to have fun together.
I absolutely love this place! It is a masive size of a building built beautifully. It has something for all ages. Their pubic swim cost $5 bucks each for myselfand same price for my daughter. It had a swim lane pool, a small end, middle, deep end for swimming and messing around, a low dive board, a high dive board, 3 very high platforms(that were safely roped off for pros i guess or competition. It has 2 water slides(open one for young or elderly and one was closed in and is very fun and fast, heated pool for new moms or elderly or for anyone who wants to relax. The staff are so nice and respectful. It's such a fun place to go with my daughter. We had a blast. It also had a family change room with a stall and its own lockers, i found this so great because where my daughter is still young and im opposite sex, shes understandably not allowed to go in mens room and with this room on the side for parents was great cause we used the stall to privately change and the room was big enough for more then us. I also think i seen a baby change table in there as well! Thanks again..we will be back! ❤️
Chris M — Google review
An aging, older facility located on the Memorial University campus. This pool has definitely seen better days, but still does the job as an excellent 8x50m+ pool. Definitely needs more spectator areas In the pool, and a refit of the locker room areas. Staff were all excellent, and having a tim Hortons in the building is a power move.

Really amazing pool! Friendly staff. It's just perfect! I love this pool. Might be the highlight of our St.John's stay. We stayed at the university and we get to swim here. Highly recommend to stay in the university rooms instead of downtown hotels.

flooring is very nice non slip hot spray mica throughout facility it's really very excellent, the best Modern Olympic spec pool in newfoundland, a high class swim, pool is warm, showers are hot, staff are very welcoming and all very friendly Lockers are all 50 cents each, Pool is 16 ft deep, well above Olympic spec however i prefer training to 26 ft there are requirements in this pool that are not applicable on the mainland like no face mask with nose The pool is truly very excellent, many years ago there used to be a sauna but it's not there anymore, I haven't yet had the time to look at stationary excercise equipment but it's a great place to swim I'd recommend to everyone for a excellent time thankyou swimming here since grade 2/3. Or trying atleast! This is a excellent pool for family's or people with social anxiety, female facility's have change tables and playpens, 25/50 meter lanes with just you or low numbers depending on time of day, membership cost is $55 for 12 swims or $236 for 90 days or 5.50 a swim!
Peter B — Google review
This place use to be good but it slowly got worse over the past 5 years IMO. The slides leave marks all over your back and it hurts for a while. Life guards scream from across the entire pool to somebody on the opposite side. Parents, instead of going into the change stalls that are obviously next to them, just change their children in front of everybody else which is discusting and gross.
Karen D — Google review
Generally a very good facility. I believe it is the largest pool on the island. Some parts of the building are starting to show their age, particularly the change rooms. The building is very well maintained however making the age of the infrastructure much less of an issue. I think it's also time to ditch the Tim Hortons in favor of somthing healthier considering this is a sports and recreation facility. Maybe a Booster Juice?

The Parlour is an excellent ice cream shop located near Bannerman Park. The Gelato here is top quality, with a wide range of flavours to choose from. They have the best gelato I’ve ever had. Their jam jam flavour is absolutely incredible, so smooth and filled with huge pieces of jam jam! Their scoops are also pretty big, so it’s well worth it. The people working there are also very nice! My favourite place to stop for a sweet treat.
Max P — Google review
Unfortunately, my experience at this place was very disappointing. I ordered two kinds of ice cream - a sorbet and a raspberry-based flavor - and both tasted terrible. The flavors were completely bland, artificial, and nothing like what was advertised. It felt like eating plain, colored ice with no real taste. What made it even worse was the atmosphere. The place was extremely noisy and chaotic. People were shouting across the room, making it impossible to relax or even hear your own thoughts. It was not a comfortable or welcoming environment at all. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for quality ice cream or a peaceful spot to enjoy their treat.

The Colonial Building is an Irish Limestone building that was the Legislature Building for the Newfoundland Government until 1960. The building is pretty, historic, and stately and is typical of Georgian-style architecture from the mid-1800s. It's located right across the street from a good pizza restaurant.

If you are into history this is a must see in Newfoundland. Amazing building with a lot of historical significance. Beautiful to view even if you aren't interested in its history. I went with my partner and we were provided with a great tour by Ann. Ann was clearly passionate about the history of the building and the tour was all the better for it. Highly recommended if you are in St. Johns.
Dallas ( — Google review
No waiting in line. Large building with 3 floors. Architecture was beautiful and the ceilings were incredible but the room weren’t furnished so it was just walking into bare rooms with maybe a table in the middle of the room or just a chair. Would have enjoyed a furnished house or even partially furnished to get a sense of what each room would have been used for. The only area that had detail was the parliament room.
Lisa S — Google review
Our visit to the Colonial Building was an incredibly rewarding experience, largely due to our knowledgeable guide, Alex. He provided an insightful and thorough explanation of the building’s architecture, detailing its various artistic styles and how it has evolved over time. Alex also shared fascinating stories about the historical events that took place there, offering a deeper understanding of Newfoundland's past. What made the tour even more special was Alex's genuine passion for both the building and the history of Newfoundland. His enthusiasm was contagious, and it was clear that he deeply cares about this place. He answered all our questions with great detail, and we left with a newfound appreciation for the building and its role in the island’s heritage. I highly recommend to visit this place, you will walk out the door with full hands of knowledge.

They've done a nice job preserving this building. Most of the rooms are empty but they have kept the main chamber furnished to reflect the original set up of the legislature. There are some informative panels as you walk around. There are guided tours but we didn't take one. As we were the only ones there at the time we visited, the staff were more than happy to spend time with us to explain a few things. There is a small fee to enter.

The East Coast Trail, also known as Cobbler’s Path, is a challenging 20.4km hike that offers breathtaking views of offshore islands, waterfalls, meadows, and barrens. The trail can be challenging due to snow and ice in early spring but rewards hikers with stunning coastal landscapes near St. John's. The well-maintained path provides easy access for hiking enthusiasts and offers beautiful stretches of land with flowers, soft grass, and interesting rocks.
A very nice walk to a great viewpoint. The path is relatively easy yo traverse. They were working on improving the trail while I was there. The improvements so far were already great and made the walk much more pleasurable. Keep an eye out for whales while you there.
Jan W — Google review
We just did the short walk out to the point, which gave some lovely coastal views. The steps leading down to the point are worse for wear, and a hiking stick would be handy for anyone with mobility issues. It's amazing that one can access such rugged beauty just 15 minutes from downtown. Hikers we met who did the full trail told us that they had a great clifftop view of humpback whales.
David B — Google review
Stunning and beautiful views for a mear 20 min walk out. It's a fairly easy trek down to the tip of Torbay Point, and worth every step. It's quite an elevation change heading down however, so the walk back up from the point is a little more strenuous, but completely doable for a novice hiker.
