Located on Signal Hill in St. Johns, the Johnson Geo Centre is a science museum that offers a fascinating exploration of geological history. The center features hands-on exhibits that delve into various aspects of local geology, including glaciers and icebergs. One of its popular exhibitions is 'The Titanic Story,' which provides a comprehensive account of the infamous disaster, covering everything from the construction of the ship to the aftermath.
Lots of stuff to see, learn, and read about while here. The paid show was called Antarctica when I went and it was about an hour long which I enjoyed. The oil and gas exhibits were closed when I went but I still enjoyed learning about all of the different rock types and information about space. I'd recommend watching the quick 10~ minute free show before walking through it as it serves as a nice intro. Ended up spending about 2 and a half hours here (that includes watching the paid show).
Sparkling I — Google review
The Johnson Geo Centre is truly a gem in St. John's — a beautifully designed facility nestled right into the rock of Signal Hill. It's an incredible space that we’re lucky to have in our city, offering a unique experience that blends geology, natural history, and science in a visually striking and engaging way. The staff are exceptionally friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about what they do, which makes the visit even more enjoyable. One of the major highlights is the discounted admission for students and completely free access for Memorial University students. That kind of accessibility is something more attractions in the city should offer. The main geological exhibits are very well done. The rock and mineral displays are especially informative and visually appealing — great for all ages and backgrounds. The center does a great job educating visitors on the geological history of Newfoundland and Labrador in a hands-on and approachable way. That said, there are a few important criticisms worth addressing. First and most concerning is the smell throughout the facility. It’s hard to ignore the strong odor of mildew and body odor lingering in the air, especially around the carpeted areas and in the theatre. After spending about an hour inside, it became genuinely nauseating. It’s clear the carpets and general air quality need serious attention — it takes away from the otherwise great experience. The oil and gas exhibit, while interesting and informative in some aspects, is very one-sided. It strongly emphasizes how important oil is to our lives — which is undeniably true — but completely omits any mention of the serious environmental damage associated with oil drilling and consumption. Given that this section is sponsored by ExxonMobil, it honestly reads like corporate propaganda. There must be a part of the exhibit that acknowledges the environmental consequences and discusses possible solutions or greener alternatives. Presenting only the positives is misleading and irresponsible in an educational setting. Another major letdown was the new temporary exhibit on mythical creatures. While the concept and information are fantastic, it's incredibly disappointing to see that they’ve used cheap, AI-generated imagery for the visual content. In a city with such a rich artistic community, this feels like a slap in the face to local artists who could have created stunning and original work for the exhibit. Instead, visitors are greeted with generic, soulless, AI-generated slop — it’s disheartening and frankly embarrassing. Overall, the Johnson Geo Centre has so much potential and already offers a lot — from its impressive geology exhibits to its passionate staff. But it’s being held back by poor maintenance, questionable content choices, and a disappointing lack of support for real local talent. With some cleaning, critical updates to its messaging, and a commitment to showcasing authentic creative work, the Geo Centre could truly shine.

If you love rocks, this is the place to go. If not, you’re better off skipping as there isn’t much else to do. I thought it would be bigger subterranean but it isn’t as big as you’d think. There are plenty of displays and some hands on activities for the kids, but you can go through everything in less than 30 minutes. We probably spent more time in the gift shop than underground. Also, this was the only touristy place I encountered in St. John’s that did not accept American Express.
Jonathan L — Google review
This place left me completely amazed. Walking inside, surrounded by the mountain itself, felt almost otherworldly like stepping into the earth’s memory. The exhibits weren’t just informative, they pulled me in so deeply that I lost track of time and spent more than three hours exploring. What moved me most was being able to touch the rocks and realize I was holding energy and history that’s billions of years old. It’s not just a museum or information centre, it’s an experience that makes you feel small in the best possible way.
Ramya S — Google review
A real nice geology based museum. It documents the history of the earth through a geological basis. Very interesting and informative. After one visits the interior, remember to visit the outside grounds for more information and geological understanding. Overall, a unique visit and good experience.

When you are in St. John’s and vicinity a great place to visit for people of all ages is Memorial University's Johnson Geo Centre. Signal Hill is just up further so visiting both seems perfect as one wall of the JG Centre is made up of Signal Hill rock. One of my photos will show you. The Centre goes along way in explaining how NL was formed over time. Study of the region’s unique rock formations helped in discovering plate tectonics. There is also an emphasis on ecology and the exploration of space.
Garry B — Google review
Glad we stopped by before Signal hill Cabot tower opened on a foggy morning. Educational, well laid out interactive exhibits on geology and oil production. I learned a lot about the unique natural resources of NL area. Nice little theatre film. Great for all ages.

We saw the top of Signal Hill so we had to see below it! The is place is full of cool science exhibits. Especially had fun creating our own earthquake. Kids will have fun here too, really cool building!

Perched on a hilltop, The Rooms in St. Johns is a multifaceted cultural center housing the Provincial Museum, Archives, and Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador. This modern facility offers interactive programs and exhibits that showcase local art, natural history, and cultural heritage. Visitors can engage in various activities such as meeting Newfoundland dogs, sampling local cuisine, enjoying traditional music performances, and exploring the province's contribution to air travel development.
We visited The Rooms in St. John's, yesterday. It was Canada Day, and entry was free — we didn’t know that in advance, so it was a nice surprise! The place was beautiful and very interesting. It includes two art galleries and three museum sections. If you enjoy museums, this is definitely a place you'll love. To explore everything properly and take your time reading through the exhibits, expect to spend at least two hours or more. The washrooms were clean, and the gift shop was lovely, it had a great selection of local products at reasonable prices, which isn’t always the case in museum gift shops. Highly recommended for anyone visiting St. John's!

I visited a few weeks ago with my child and had a great time. The WWI exhibit for the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was well put together and very informative. They had also many activities for children throughout. It was interesting to see all the Canada Games medals in the archives area. The view of the harbour was great too.

A true gem in the heart of St. John's, The Rooms is an absolute must-visit for locals and tourists alike. The experience begins before you even step inside; the building itself is a gorgeous piece of architecture that beautifully complements the city's skyline. One of the first things you'll appreciate is the fair and reasonable admission price. It’s great value for the quality and scale of the facility. They also have special times when students can get in for free, which is a fantastic initiative to make arts and culture accessible to everyone. Once inside, the art gallery and museum collections are simply stunning. Everything is so wonderfully put together and immaculately kept. You can feel the passion and care that goes into every exhibit. It's clear that whoever is in charge of the galleries has a great love for what they do, as the attention to detail is evident everywhere you look. It makes for a truly immersive and enjoyable experience as you explore Newfoundland and Labrador's rich history and vibrant arts scene. Beyond the exhibits, the amenities are top-notch. The gift shop is incredibly cute and boasts a wide selection of amazing Newfoundland merchandise, as well as items specific to The Rooms. And while it deserves its own separate review, I have to mention that the on-site cafe is amazing. Overall, The Rooms is a world-class facility that St. John's should be incredibly proud of. I can't recommend it enough.
Kenneth G — Google review
Fantastic museum, I really enjoy the art gallery of the Newfoundland local artist. Amazing pieces. And we learned about the history of indigenous people. It was so touching. And we found the interaction between the public the organizers is also very interesting. Ppl are creating their art pieces in The Rooms at night on Friday. Then there’s a wall full of their artwork.
Kay D — Google review
A very interesting museum on 3 floors. Here you will learn a lot about the First World War and the participation of Newfoundlanders in it, and also get acquainted with the animal world of the Arctic. There are 2 art galleries, a fairly large cafe and a large sports exhibition.
Yuliia — Google review
The Rooms turned out to be one of the must explore stops in St. John’s. I spent a couple of hours exploring and could’ve easily stayed longer. The exhibits on Newfoundland’s history, especially the personal artifacts from people before and during the world wars, really made me pause. The whale section was another highlight, something you don’t forget quickly, the carved whale skull alone is massive, stretching several feet across, and it really gives you a sense of just how enormous these creatures are. And of course, the view from upstairs is worth the visit on its own, looking out over the harbour and Signal Hill is just beautiful. If you like reading through every exhibit, plan for most of a day. Otherwise, a few hours is enough to get a real feel. Either way, it’s a place that leaves an impression.
Ramya S — Google review
First time there. A beautiful, modern museum in the heart of St. John’s. Full of historical artifacts, arts and educational facts about NFLD. The restaurant there produces delicious food with an outstanding view of the harbour and Signal Hill. Good for all ages!
N T — Google review
Very well put together museum with a few floors to explore. There's even a bistro type restaurant on the top floor to eat or have food and drink. This is one place I wanted to visit on my trip and it certainly didn't disappoint. There was so much information about the island with so many exhibits and explanations to go with everything. It's an awesome place to visit if it's your first time visiting and want to spend an afternoon or the day somewhere by yourself or others. It was also surprisingly clean with how big it is. I don't think I even got to see everything but my favorite is seeing all the preserved artifacts of real life things they used to use over the years for transport etc.

Located in the heart of St. John's, The Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a stunning example of Gothic Revival-style architecture and a significant symbol of faith in Newfoundland and Labrador. This iconic mid-19th century cathedral features intricate details, soaring spires, and exquisite stained glass windows that captivate visitors. As an important National Historic Site of Canada, it showcases the rich religious history of St.
Beautiful architecture. The details on the statues were incredible. Not too busy. Tours start at 10am.

The stained glass in this cathedral is really beautiful. The cathedral is large and a quiet place to visit, whether for prayer or just to sit and admire the building. On a weekday it appears that the cathedral is only open from 9am to 12pm.
Martin H — Google review
We stopped by this beautiful church as it was just up the hill from our suite in a Jellybean house. You can go in on your own and they had a young adult / student available to answer any questions. The outside with all the stonework and 2 large clock towers was magnificent! Inside they had many beautiful stained glass windows and a ginormous wood organ that is a feat of human ingenuity! Entrance is by donation and they have QR codes (barcode) that you can use your phone to donate $5, $10 or $20. Stop by of you’re in St John’s!

Stunning catholic cathedral. Definitely the biggest and most beautiful in the city. Definitely take the time to see it.
Yuliia — Google review
Very cool building. Impressive architecture and stained glass windows. Our tour guide provided lots of interesting info. His dad and brothers helped work on the ceilings in the 1950's I believe.

Beautiful church Pay $5 a person. Worth it!
Susie F — Google review
Couldn't go in because of a wedding, but looking through the door it seems like a wonderful Basilica. The exterior is very impressive, large and ornately decorated. It sits atop the hill and would have had the best view across the harbour when built. Sadly, city growth has limited that view, but it is still very good. The entrance to the Basilica is also impressive with a large arch and statuary. It's a good walk from the harbour, about 15 minutes, with quite a steep incline. Worth the walk.

Signal Hill National Historic Site in St. John's, Newfoundland, is a former military defense site that now offers hiking trails and guided tours. The site provides breathtaking panoramic views of downtown St. John's, The Narrows, and the harbor. Visitors can also visit the landmark Cabot Tower on Signal Hill and enjoy dining at a restaurant nearby with paintings displaying Newfoundland's oceanic landscape.
I feel extremely blessed to live roughly ten minutes away from such a beautiful historic site, rife with information and rich in history. The hiking trails are what I enjoy the most; although, the activities throughout the grounds are plentiful. You can hike, bird-watch, check out the sunrise/sunset, visit Cabot Tower, watch the Tattoo reenactment - plus more! If you are heading up on a nice day, be sure to leave a little earlier than planned to give yourself time to find a parking spot. If a visit at night is expected, make sure to bring some extra layers in case the winds are high as it can be much cooler than it seems.

We visited Signal Hill twice – once in the early morning and again in the evening to catch the sunset – and both times offered a unique experience. Even though the place was quite crowded, it never felt crowded. There’s something about the wide-open views and peaceful energy that makes it feel spacious and serene. From the top, you get a breathtaking panoramic view of St. John’s, the coastline, the lighthouse, and the charming Battery area below. It’s the kind of view that makes you pause and truly take in the moment. The cool breeze, peaceful atmosphere, and stunning scenery made this spot perfect for anyone seeking a moment of mindfulness or quiet reflection. Whether you're into photography, nature, or just want to escape the city's buzz for a bit – Signal Hill is definitely worth your time. Highly recommended for both early risers and sunset chasers!

The walk to Signal Hill from downtown St. John’s is definitely worth it. You walk along the ocean and at the beginning you see lots of colorful, unique houses — really fantastic. Later on, you get breathtaking views of the cliffs. Make sure to bring something to eat and drink, because you’ll need it. There are some steep climbs and stairways to get to the very top — wow! But the view is 100% worth every step.
Marisa T — Google review
What a great place to visit, so much history, mostly things you’ve heard but so much more happened here. This is a must see when you come to this amazing province (a bucket list historic site for certain). Once you walk around the site it’s a great place to boat watch. There are plenty of vantage points to what the ships enter and leave the harbour.
Ian S — Google review
For breathtaking views, great outdoor activity and a history lesson I recommend. The hike up the hill on average is about 30 mins. A bit of a work out but worth it hen you get to the top. You can also drive up but I prefer to do the walk because of the scenery and the people you meet going up. If you’re in St. John’s do signal hill! I only took video this time going up. But here are a few pictures of my 8am morning walk.

Hiking Trail Review North Head Trail Loop - 2.5 Miles Trail head is very easy to find and there are loads of parking spots. There are multiple other nearby lots and intersecting trails. This trail itself is breathtaking and stunning. Truly gorgeous views and tons of local history associated with it. Rocky and lots of stairs, you will be sucking wind at certain points but absolutely worth every moment.

Signal Hill in St. John’s is an absolute must-visit! The sweeping views of the sparkling harbor, rugged coastline, and vibrant city skyline left me speechless. The North Head Trail is a highlight, offering a scenic, moderately challenging hike with jaw-dropping ocean vistas and fresh sea air. It’s perfect for photographers, families, or anyone craving nature’s beauty. The open, windy landscape feels invigorating, and the nearby visitor centre is clean and welcoming. Just a short drive from downtown, it’s an ideal spot for a morning walk or sunset stroll. I’m already excited to return!

Signal Hill and Cabot Tower are a highlight of Saint John’s. The walk to the tower from downtown isn’t too steep, however it can take a while. There is a road for cars and a parking lot too. The views from the top are worth it! You can gaze out to the open ocean as well as the harbour and watch ships coming by too. The hikes around Signal Hill are quite nice as well. The visitor Center near the parking lot has more information about the maps of the hikes and their length, difficulty level, start and end points. (The chocolates you can buy from there are really tasty!)

Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site, located in St. John's, is a museum that delves into the history of lighthouses and their significance in maritime navigation. Housed in a restored 1836 lighthouse, the museum features exhibits on navigation, communication, and sea safety. Notably, visitors can explore original fog alarm machinery at The Fog Alarm exhibit and learn about semaphore communication at The Signal Station.
Beautiful historical spot with stunning views! We visited Cape Spear Lighthouse yesterday and had a great experience. The site is full of fascinating details, especially inside the lighthouse house — it really gives you a glimpse into the past. The view over the Atlantic Ocean is absolutely breathtaking. We were lucky enough to spot whales from there! The house tour was free yesterday, no ticket needed. There’s a parking area, a gift shop, a small art gallery, a cozy café, and clean public restrooms in the lower area. Overall, it’s a must-see if you're in the area. Highly recommended!
Maryam A — Google review
We were there in early September, on a weekday, so there weren't many people. The place itself has an interesting military history, which you can read about on the information displays. And the nature and ocean views are just fantastic! You can come here on your own (there is parking) or book a tour from St. John's.
Yuliia — Google review
We chose a rainy, foggy, windy and cold day to visit this Easternmost point of North America. But we were not deterred. We enjoyed visiting the historic lighthouse and exploring the many vantage points of this beautiful location. I was particularly interested in Fort Cape Spear's World War Two history as a coastal defence artillery battery. Some of the guns are still there, as well as ammunition bunkers and tunnels. We didn't see any whales because, frankly, we couldn't see the water because of the fog. Otherwise, it was a great place to visit.
Dan T — Google review
Amazing walking trails and lighthouses! Walk along the coast. Around the lighthouses. See the old gun batteries from WWII (what’s left of them) and stand at the eastern most point in Canada. Trails are easy walking, some steps and inclines. Well worth the visit.

such a wonderful place, lots of history and incredible scenery, we had fantastic weather so it was even more amazing. and to be at the most eastern point in north america, WOW. i would definitely recommend stopping here on your tour on this beautiful province.

You can’t go wrong by standing at the most eastern point in North America. They have done an amazing job putting in boardwalks and stairs on most of their uphill climbs. Just an awesome place for sightseeing and hiking.

Beautiful scenery. We observed many whales jumping, blowing air, and flicking their tails! Although binnoculars would definitely help with the experience. Many people around but not overwhelming. We didn't visit the tourist sites as we had short timelines. Gorgeous spot. Eastern most spot in North America!! Worth the drive, about 20 minute drive outside St. Johns.

Jelly Beans Row, located in downtown St. John's, is a vibrant and colorful street that resembles the end of a rainbow. The houses are painted in quirky and unique color combinations, making it a perfect spot for endless photo opportunities. Visitors are often encouraged to focus on the architectural shapes and colors of the houses rather than the wider street views, as each house is as colorful as the characters that live in them.
A must see when visiting St. John's. Colorful rows and rows of homes, perfect for picture taking. Multiple streets and colors to choose from with so much history and character. Make note of all the special touches like decorated mailboxes and lamp posts.
Deb C — Google review
To be honest is the entire downtown. My favourite street was Victoria, very well maintained houses and worth walk around. You can’t park on those but it’s easy to stop and take a quick shot.
Junia G — Google review
Stopped by Jellybean Row today and loved every minute. The famous rainbow-colored houses along Duckworth Street and beyond really pop against the sky — you instantly feel the joy of St. John’s in architectural form. Walking its slopes and turning corners to find another bold color is a delight for any camera (or just your own eyes). The history and character here truly shine through.

Interesting part of town. There are lots of hills here similar to San Francisco (just smaller). It's definitely worth visiting here once as the homes have a lot of color, history and interest. It is worth visiting at least once. There are many more around town as well as you travel through.
Duane E — Google review
I love the colourful aesthetic of all the rowhouses here. I'm glad to see the people here keep the tradition of painting their houses this way. This area is not the only place to see these types of houses. They are everywhere in the area.
KG82 — Google review
Jelly Bean Row wasn’t as bright and spectacular as the pictures. Newfoundland has rows of these houses everywhere. If you walk and drive around you will see them. This row of houses was just outside of downtown walking to our car where we parked.

Located in St. John's, Newfoundland, the Newman Wine Vaults are a historic site dating back to the 19th century. These stone vaults were originally used for aging the renowned Newmans port and have been designated as a Registered Heritage Structure. Visitors can take guided tours of the vaults and enjoy complimentary tastings of port wine. The site is currently undergoing restoration and will feature an interpretation space showcasing the colorful history of the liquor trade in Newfoundland.
The short guided tour and wine tasting was lovely. The guides were kind and informative, and we had some fun conversation with our fellow tourists. Definitely recommend as a warm stop on a cold day.

Wonderfully informative guide. It is a short tour but very interesting! Plus the sample of wind was a lovely touch. What a nice break from the sun to learn a bit about the area.
Theresa D — Google review
Even though the physical space may be small, these vaults were larger than life with rich history and surprises at every turn. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and have a wealth of knowledge. The wine sample was wonderful as well, there was even an interactive activity. If you have 30min to an hour to stop by, this is definitely worth you while.

Nice opportunity to learn about the history of port in St John's. Tour guide was very informative and we even got a little sample of port to try!
Julia B — Google review
Having visited Portugal, I can tell you the wine is authentic and offers a true Português experience. The tours are free and the hosts are very well versed. It is not an overly vast bond, so don't expect vaults and vaults and vaults. It is relatively small but offers a very vivid history. One taste is included, it is free. Unfortunately, you're not able to tip the servers for their hard work. It is a beautiful space, recently renovated and modern, to be admired.

The Newman Wine Vaults Provincial Historic Site in St. John’s is a quiet marvel tucked beneath the city’s surface—both literally and historically. Stepping into the cool, stone chambers, we were transported into a story that spans centuries and continents: how port wine from sunny Portugal found its way to Newfoundland’s damp climate, where it aged to perfection and was sipped by English aristocracy.
Sylvain P — Google review
Very interesting tour detailing the history of Neman’s Port and how Newfoundland became a pivotal point in the quality of this ruby port.

Love the creepy vibe. Stone walls, low archways, jail cells. And the port was delicious. Learned a lot about the history of the former jail and how the Newman’s started make port liquor.

So much interesting information, pictures and artefacts showing the history of rail and government maritime transport in NL. Also, they had a fun model train display that my 8 year-old spent at least an hour watching...(Actually, she was likely playing with the toy train activity stations beside it for most of that time, lol). Will definitely go back. Strongly recommended!

Lots of panels to read, with displays mixed in among the panels. An awesome toy train display that moves around a track very well detailed of the areas that the railways passes through. The jewel of the whole museum.

Decent train museum, but it has a lot of nautical focus being in St. Johns. There is a static display of a Deisel engine outside. Model train set up looked nice but wasn't running.

I love spending time at harborside parks! 😌 There's something so peaceful about being near the water. They're a great place to relax and take in the scenery. Plus, you can often learn a lot about a city's history from its harbor.

The Memorial University Botanical Garden is a natural complex nestled in the heart of St. John's, offering a diverse array of local plants, flowers, and winding paths to explore. Situated within a boreal forest, it provides an excellent opportunity for birdwatching and wildlife spotting along its five nature trails. The garden showcases themed areas such as native plant gardens, rock gardens, and woodland gardens.
Absolutely fabulous gardens with a lot of specimens and very well defined and marked trails. Although it's a relatively small area at ~100 acres, the space is extremely well managed with 5 different trails to choose from. Had a great time here and would definitely visit again!
Anand R — Google review
The Botanical Garden was not on our to-do list as it’s not mentioned anywhere on any “Things to do in St John’s” sites. But since we had a gap in our schedule, my daughter wanted to go see it. Boy aren’t we happy we did! We did all 4 trails and the garden. The trails are well kept and clean. The air is fresh. The hike is very kid friendly. I highly recommend if you like a little easy walk in nature.
Karen L — Google review
It isincredible that this is not one of the more recommended places on blogs or vlogs. It’s a 15 minute drive from St John’s harbour. This is an absolutely beautiful collection of different types of gardens from rock gardens to Japanese style gardens. There is even a green house with a grapevine growing profusely with massive bunches of grapes. An absolute must for all the gardeners and those with botanical conservation and nature interests. There is a wonderful pollinator garden and beehive. In addition to the gardens there are trails most gently sloping and low inclines with lots of signs for teaching information about the wild plants and berries. Definitely senior friendly trails with exception one that is clearly labelled as rugged.
Carolyn E — Google review
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the botanical garden. The site was different than anticipated, with more walking trails - which I didn’t know about and hadn’t allocated time for. If I came again, I would give myself more time to enjoy them all. The main garden and Macleod trail were lovely. I appreciated all the signage and info at each garden - very educational. I was there at 9:30 AM on a Thursday and the gardens were quiet and peaceful. Staff at the front desk were welcoming and helpful. For a lover of gardens and flowers - this was the perfect way to spend a morning. There is a ramp to enter the main building, an electronic door opener for accessibility. The main path and boardwalk are level, making a lot of the space accessible, though it is not paved, and there are some hills, which may post a challenge for some.

Middle Cove Beach in St. Johns is a popular spot for summer bonfires, making it a favorite tradition for locals and visitors alike. It's common to see over a dozen fires along the beach on any given night, so arriving early to secure a fire pit is recommended. If all the pits are taken, creating your own circle of stones is an option.
Middle Cove Beach, located in Logy Bay, Newfoundland, is a rocky beach known for its dramatic cliffs and beautiful views, offering a unique experience for visitors, especially during the capelin run.
TOMIN G — Google review
My visit to Middle Cove Beach in St. John’s was an absolute delight! Just a 10-minute drive from downtown, this stunning beach offers soft sand, rocky shores, and breathtaking Atlantic views. The atmosphere is perfect for families, with kids playing in the shallow waves and locals roasting marshmallows by fire pits at dusk. I was thrilled to witness the capelin roll in early summer, a unique Newfoundland experience! The beach is clean, with plenty of space for picnics and relaxing. The dramatic cliffs and crashing waves make it a photographer’s dream. Despite the chilly water, the vibrant scenery and friendly vibe make Middle Cove Beach a must-visit gem in St. John’s!

You can't go wrong with a trip to this beach. Beautiful experience. Pretty decent parking. gorgeous view. Great place for whale watching and occasional ice berg. Lots of cool rocks!
Amaryllis C — Google review
Middle Cove Beach is a gorgeous spot just outside St. John’s — rugged cliffs, rolling waves, and those classic North Atlantic views that make Newfoundland so special. It’s a great place to go for a walk, have a small beach fire in the evening, or just sit and take in the sound of the surf. That said, it’s definitely not a swimming beach — the water is cold year-round, and the waves can be rough. The beach is rocky rather than sandy, so sturdy shoes are a good idea if you’re planning to explore the shoreline or hunt for sea glass. Parking can also get busy on nice days, especially during capelin season when locals gather to watch the fish roll in. Overall, Middle Cove is worth a visit for the views and atmosphere rather than a full beach day. It’s wild, beautiful, and unmistakably Newfoundland — bring a sweater, a camera, and an appreciation for the Atlantic’s power.
Jean-Philippe B — Google review
Such a great spot, wish we would have come in the summer for a bon fire, but it was a great spot for photos this morning. Calm, quiet and peaceful with plenty of parking at no charge.
Deb C — Google review
Came here 4 days in a row in August, 2025. I was visiting during a heat wave and this was a 5 mins drive from where my husband was working. It’s a dog friendly beach, lots of family, great spot to spend the day or even just to quickly cool off. I should mention that I did see what I believe was a lion’s mane jellyfish near the shore — So keep your eyes out. This didn’t stop me, nor the local from going in. Lots of the locals were also great at finding starfish, showing the kids, then releasing them back in the ocean. Cold water, but crystal clear! There’s lots of parking, which becomes limited at peak hours on peak days — but I always found a spot.
Kim M — Google review
Beautiful beach, with parking close by and a porta potty. 5 stars. Trail: Stairs at the start and then pretty much a level walk. Many paths to the cliff's edge Roots on path for almost the entire path meaning you have to look down at all times. Tripping hazard especially when the path is along the cliff edge. Not suitable for young children. Beautiful views. 3 stars
Lili M — Google review
The trail starts on the beach with a small scramble up big rocks. We hiked 3 km one way & turned around - reluctantly, but short on time. It's the type of trail where you say, "let's see what's around the corner" & you end up walking further. Even in foggy weather we had some good photo ops. Be sure to at least hike 2 km one way to see the bridge & waterfall.

Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours offers thrilling experiences for those seeking adventure in St. John's harbor and beyond. Additionally, they conduct iceberg tours in Twillingate, known as the iceberg capital of the world.
A friend and I traveled to St John’s from the U.S. This tour was so wonderful. I have been on many boat tours, from the Chicago River to the coast of Mexico, and the vibes and views from this one were unmatched. Although we were unlucky in spotting a whale or a puffin, the crew, ESPECIALLY Glenn and Roy made us feel like we didn’t miss a thing. P.S. bring a hat, it gets windy and make sure to try the coffee gin. Enjoy!☺️

Had a great time on the boat! Went on a Monday afternoon 11:30am 2 hour tour. Boat wasn't too full about +/-30 people. Got to see humpbacks and a group of seals. None of the whales breached. But it was still cool to see from a distance. I find it a little pricey for the 2 hours. Be sure to bring cash if you want to buy beverages or snacks on the boat.

We had a marvelous experience with this tour that was taken in St.John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador. Carol Anne, owner, went above & beyond to assist me in rescheduling when a member of our travel group became ill. The entire staff is friendly and professional, and the tour itself was wonderful. It was such a treat to get my first glimpse of an iceberg, and see the gorgeous shoreline and attractions of St.John’s such as Cape Spear and Cabot Lodge, Jelly Bean Row, etc. from the ocean. This is definitely a tour worth taking and gives you the additional bonus of 2 enjoyable hours of interesting down time from the hustle & bustle of travel & sightseeing. This was definitely time well spent.

We came here for my wife’s birthday (at the time, fiancé), and it turned out to be an absolute blast — easily one of the highlights of our trip! The crew was amazing and so memorable, making the whole experience even better. The views along the coastline and out on the water were stunning, and we even made it all the way down to the beautiful Cape Spear. To top it off, we were lucky enough to spot a couple of whales, puffins and eagles during the trip — truly unforgettable. 🌊🐳 If you’re in St. John’s, this is an absolute must-do experience. Highly recommend!

When visiting St. John’s taking a tour of the Harbour, The Narrows and beyond with Iceberg Quest is a must do activity. I went with an open mind and simply wanted the experience of being on an ocean again, even for a short while. It was off season for most things but the narrative provided by the crew gave me a deeper understanding about St. John’s role in many significant historical moments and the development of the city. The crew is passionate and knowledgeable about their job. They are also very friendly, approachable and kind. Overall, I had a wonderful time and would do it again on a future visit. Gatherall's Puffin & Whale Watch offers an unforgettable experience on Newfoundland's east coast, where North America's largest puffin and kittiwake colonies reside. With over 90 percent of the continent's Atlantic puffins breeding in Newfoundland, visitors can witness more than two million seabirds nesting and feeding their chicks during the capelin season from mid-June to mid-July. Additionally, whales follow the capelin into Witless Bay and the surrounding waters during their annual migrations.
Absolutely the best tour experience we could’ve asked for! From start to finish, this whale and puffin watching tour was incredible. The whole crew — the captain and tour guides — were super kind, fun, and full of energy. It felt like we got a bonus stand-up comedy show along with the tour! Even before reaching the whale-watching area, we were entertained with hilarious and informative commentary that made the time fly. Their explanations about puffins and other seabirds in the North Atlantic were detailed and fascinating. Same with the whales — we learned so much while laughing the entire time! The team was incredibly professional and knew exactly where to go for the best views and photo opportunities. The scenery was breathtaking, and we managed to get some amazing photos. After the tour, we also checked out a great little gift shop at the dock — with lovely handmade crafts and fair prices. Overall, an unforgettable experience — highly, highly recommended!

We had a super great experience on our excursion. We saw a humpback whale and that was so thrilling. My partner is in a wheelchair and they went over the top to ensure she was able to see and have as good a time as anyone on the boat. Always checking in with us. The puffins were difficult to photograph with my iPhone 16pro. But my partner had a steadier hand and got a couple. Thanks for a brilliant time. We booked this trip with my family.

August 16, 2025 was a significant milestone wedding anniversary for my wife and I. Back in January when we were planning what to do, we decided to spend a few days in and around St. John's. We covered all the must sees - Signal Hill, Cape Spear, George St, and so on, but we wanted to include something special for the afternoon of the actual day. It occurred to us that we don't see that many whales in the river that flows through our small town just outside of Ottawa, so we decided to book with Gatheralls. So glad that we did! While we enjoyed everything that we saw and did in St. John's, both of us feel that this was the absolute highlight! We loved the experience. Just being out on the ocean was a cool experience. The puffins and other birds were incredible. The crew were fabulous! The singing, the jokes and laughter, the information about the puffins and other birds was fascinating - who knew that a little puffin could dive up to 200 feet into the ocean in search of food - and the screech in ceremony was hilarious. Apparently there was a two-metre swell that day and I truly came to understand what the term 'sea legs' really means. We passengers were all over the place, hanging on to seats and railings while the crew was standing and walking around like we were on dry land. Impressive! Alas no whales. So zero stars for the whales, but five truly deserved stars for everyone at Gatheralls. If we're ever in St. John's again we'll go back to give the whales a chance to redeem themselves.

We totally enjoyed our Puffin and whale watch experience. We saw a lot of whales and 1000's of Puffins. They are so cute and funny to watch. All the Staff from check in to entering the boat were so friendly and informative . The Captain and staff gave us lots of local information and History and entertainment a few Songs along the way. It made for a lovely Newfoundland experience. The beautiful coast line was totally breath taking. We had a spectacular weather day as well. Thanks for making our first Newfoundland trip so memorable.

We went in the first week of September, which is “too late for whales.” Guess they’d already packed up and gone on vacation. So no whale sightings for me, which was a little disappointing, but the puffins made up for it. Seeing hundreds of them buzzing around the cliffs like tiny fighter jets was honestly amazing. The crew explained their habits and gave some fun facts too, which made it even better. After the tour, they did a Newfoundland tradition for first-time visitors, which cost about $28–30. Most of it was lighthearted, but one part… not my thing. They asked people to dunk a leg with shoe still on into a bucket of water, then dipped a puffin plush into that same water and had everyone kiss it. That part felt kind of eww, gross and off-putting for me. Still, the puffin tour itself was well worth it. Even without whales, seeing puffins up close in their natural home was unforgettable.
Ramya S — Google review
I enjoyed the tour so much that I did it four times during my vacations in Newfoundland. The crew is very friendly, funny and knowledgeable. They make sure you see every kind of bird in the area, and if they are around, whales. You'll get lots of explanations about what you see, and you will always find a member of the crew to ask questions. Some of them are very talented singers, too! The staff do a fantastic job to make the trip a great experience for all! I hope to be back again at some point!

This was such a great experience for me, my family, and friends.  The crew, Captain, and the overall service was great! We were pleased with the way the tour guides spoke to us and made sure we got to see everything and we're doing ok. This came highly recommended by friends and I can see why. You can count on us to do the same! I would like to add that there was a person who needed accommodations for their wheelchair, I was touched by the way the crew took care of the individual, making sure the individual had the same experience and was not missing out on any of the activities. We got to see whales and puffins. As a bonus, we saw dolphins too!

Just a quick ride from downtown, or a beautiful hike from downtown! Great views of the harbour, the narrows, downtown, and the Atlantic Ocean. A must visit while in St. John’s!

If you're looking for a view that you'll remember for the rest of your days, this is it! St. John's and the Atlantic both look absolutely breathtaking! If you're planning on parking at the top, you should show up early. We never had an issue getting a spot. There is also a quaint little gift shop, reasonably priced.
Bryan H — Google review
Walking from downtown St. John’s up to Cabot Tower, perched on Signal Hill, is an unforgettable experience. The path is full of ups and downs, quite literally — but every step is worth it. From the start, you’re surrounded by colorful houses, the fresh Atlantic breeze, and stunning views of the harbour. As you climb higher, the walk becomes more challenging, but the scenery gets more and more breathtaking. Once at the top, the view from the tower is simply incredible: the vast ocean, the strong wind, and the historical feel of the place make it all the more special. In short, it was a wonderful walk — tough at times, but absolutely worth it. If you’re in St. John’s, don’t miss it. Put on your walking shoes, take your time, and enjoy one of the most iconic spots in Newfoundland.

Lots of hiking trails, beautiful views of the Harbour. Difficulty to find parking in busy season. Gift shop in the tower, No washrooms at the tower. You will need to go to information centre down the hill

Cool spot, great little gift shop and a cool rooftop patio.... It's kind of a tourist 'must do'. Take heed you need to be part mountain goat if you do any hiking, also take a hat because it's windy.
B.R. N — Google review
This is quite small but it's free to enter. On a windy day, you can have a short respite here. It's got a few interesting informative displays. The views from the roof are good on a clear day.

Breathtaking view of the whole city of St John’s and the wild Atlantic Ocean! It gets windy up there so come prepared! Say hi to Sable the Newfoundland dog!!!

Great views from there. This is the landmark where Marconi received a wireless signal from Europe. Tesla did it years earlier but didn't patent it. Still, this is the place that proved to the world that radio was possible

Located in the picturesque village of Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium is a seasonal marine education facility dedicated to promoting ocean conservation and awareness. The aquarium operates with a catch-and-release philosophy, collecting various marine creatures each spring and releasing them back into the wild in September. Visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences at touch tanks and marvel at a suspended beluga whale skeleton.
WOW! Such a fantastic place to explore. Although small, it was packed with good and entertaining tanks, interactive tanks that you can touch and hold things, very knowledgeable and friendly staff, cute little gift shop and a few onsite parking spots. Very fair entry price. You can easily spend 30 - 60 minutes in there.
Chantelle M — Google review
This place was one of our high lights of our stay in the St John's area. The display animals are caught specifically to display in the aquarium but are release to their home location when they need to be released or the end of the season. The knowledge base of the staff is wide and informative and they were never lost for answers. Great place for kids too. They have touch tanks that are wonderful to experience. A place not to be missed.
Bonnie S — Google review
A must-see when visiting Petty Harbour. Staff are passionate about marine life - Warren gave us a private tour and answered all of our questions. We left with a much greater appreciation for what's beneath the waves here in Newfoundland
Dan B — Google review
This place is a gem. It is a small aquarium but staffs try their best to explain about the marine life in each tank. If you like to listen to the stories of the local marine life in the area, this is the really best place to be. They have a touch station that you can touch some marine life ( i think this part is a really kid-friendly). Plus a petty harbor is such a lovely sightseeing stop.
Vorapin C — Google review
Nice and educational tours. Learn a lot of the sea creatures. The guides are very knowledgeable. Highly recommended.

Did not expect a one room aquarium to enthral our 3 year old (and us!) so much. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Also love that everything is released back into the ocean at the end of the season.
Genevieve B — Google review
Great little aquarium. It's an ethical aquarium that is catch and release. So there is a turnover of the marine life. It is literally mini, 1 room with a bunch of tanks featuring marine life located within an hour offshore. There is a touch tank that is great for the kids. Overall if you are in St John's swing by to see the Aquarium and grab ice cream at tinkers afterwards.

This is a fantastic place to visit with children. You won’t see anything crazy but you will get to touch sea urchins, hermit crabs, starfish. You will see all the local fish up close. Very cool spot that is very fun.

Visitors can explore fascinating exhibits and live displays of fish and amphibians in their natural habitat through nine underwater viewing windows that provide a glimpse into Nagles Hill Brook.
Such a neat place - my kid loved checking out all the fish and amphibians. Take your time and check out everything so that you aren't missing out. Also, if you're in the area and planning a visit to the Fluvarium, check out the Fairy Door Tour further down the road. If you can do both in the same day, that'll be a great day!!

It may be unfair to review this place as they are undergoing renovations, while the overnight rain made it difficult to see the fish as the water was cloudy due to the sediment buildup. Hopefully, I can return once their upgrades have been completed. Note: I learned that the best time to see the fishes is in the winter months, when the water is clear, or in the warmer months when it has not recently rained, as the water is a green colour, as opposed to brown when I visited. While I found the exhibits a bit rundown, my children had a lot of fun. They particularly liked building a Lego beaver dam (pretty cool), as well as using the microscope on the main floor, to observing the fishes, whether in an aquarium or through the glass where you can see them swim in their natural habitat.
James C — Google review
Many of the fish do not seem to be adequately cared for in their environments, which made the visit disappointing. Many of the tanks are noticeably too small and not clean. If you want a similar educational experience where the animals are well cared for, go to the Insectarium in Deer Lake—it is a world of difference.

We had a wonderful experience at the Fluvarium. My nine-year-old daughter, who’s a lover of animals, bugs, and the outdoors, was especially happy with our time there. The staff was knowledgeable, personable, and friendly. We spent time around the park and pond.

Terrible experience charged us 25 dollars to see a trout, a salmon, a tadpole, a frog and a toad. Very dirty outfit, most exhibits closed, don’t even bother waste of money and time, too bad looks like it used to be good but neglected and run down now

I've been there before and probably left a detailed review so since this visit only included a ride around the trails I'll limit it to that. The trails are meant for walking - not biking. But I'm careful around pedestrians and give them right of way so I break this rule regularly. With that being said the trails are nice to do a leisurely ride around the pond. They're wide and in good shape.

Nestled in the heart of St. John's, Commissariat House, Provincial Historic Site is a stunning Georgian-style building dating back to 1820. Once serving as the residence and office for the British supply officer, this beautifully restored structure offers visitors an immersive experience into colonial life through guided tours that highlight its well-preserved interiors and period furnishings.
What a great place to go. Discover some of our heritage. The tour was very informative and friendly. Highly recommend.

Enjoyed reading the political history of Newfoundland. Also the historic home of the commissionariat is really sturdy, made of brick and wood. It's around 204 years old and one of the oldest homes in St. John's, NL. My kids had a great time doing a scavenger hunt there!
Rachel B — Google review
The house itself is interesting if you think of how impressive and large it would have been in it's time. I was surprised at how small it was however as I was expecting a large mansion from the pictures online. The guide was stumped a few times at our questions and wasn't able to answer. Also a bit disappointing to find out that very little is original in the house and all the furnishings, dishes, paint, and floors are recreations. The tour only takes about 20 mins with a small group. I'm not sure what kind of show they used to put on in the past but we didn't experience any tastings, performances, wine vault, or activities of any sort as described in past reviews. Also too bad the rooms are cordoned off with rope for further expooration.

Really interesting historical site to visit. There is an old stable that is full of fascinating information boards where you can learn a lot about the history of the city. Nice visit. We were lucky to be alone in the house with the guide, so we had a really interesting tour. We were also able to taste ginger beer made by one of the guides. The house is very well preserved and well maintained. Since the cost of entry is included in the Newman Vaults entry, this was like a free visit for us. If you have time it is worth taking a tour.... I also included a picture of the ginger beer recipe for those interested... it was really good!!

The Colonial Building is an Irish Limestone building that was the Legislature Building for the Newfoundland Government until 1960. The building is pretty, historic, and stately and is typical of Georgian-style architecture from the mid-1800s. It's located right across the street from a good pizza restaurant.

If you are into history this is a must see in Newfoundland. Amazing building with a lot of historical significance. Beautiful to view even if you aren't interested in its history. I went with my partner and we were provided with a great tour by Ann. Ann was clearly passionate about the history of the building and the tour was all the better for it. Highly recommended if you are in St. Johns.

No waiting in line. Large building with 3 floors. Architecture was beautiful and the ceilings were incredible but the room weren’t furnished so it was just walking into bare rooms with maybe a table in the middle of the room or just a chair. Would have enjoyed a furnished house or even partially furnished to get a sense of what each room would have been used for. The only area that had detail was the parliament room.
Lisa S — Google review
Our visit to the Colonial Building was an incredibly rewarding experience, largely due to our knowledgeable guide, Alex. He provided an insightful and thorough explanation of the building’s architecture, detailing its various artistic styles and how it has evolved over time. Alex also shared fascinating stories about the historical events that took place there, offering a deeper understanding of Newfoundland's past. What made the tour even more special was Alex's genuine passion for both the building and the history of Newfoundland. His enthusiasm was contagious, and it was clear that he deeply cares about this place. He answered all our questions with great detail, and we left with a newfound appreciation for the building and its role in the island’s heritage. I highly recommend to visit this place, you will walk out the door with full hands of knowledge.

They've done a nice job preserving this building. Most of the rooms are empty but they have kept the main chamber furnished to reflect the original set up of the legislature. There are some informative panels as you walk around. There are guided tours but we didn't take one. As we were the only ones there at the time we visited, the staff were more than happy to spend time with us to explain a few things. There is a small fee to enter.

Embark on the St. John's Haunted Hike to delve into over 500 years of eerie history in this ancient city. The hike takes you through downtown, led by a captivating guide who shares chilling ghost stories at the exact locations where they occurred. As you wander through the city, you'll learn about its macabre yet fascinating past and be captivated by the gifted storyteller.
This was awesome! I live in St. John’s, and I thought the route was so cool, got to see alleys and areas I’ve never been to before. The stories were excellent and the guides were so engaging! We went to both the sinners hike on the Monday and the ghoulies hike on the Tuesday, and they were surprisingly/pleasantly different and both very well done!
Kathleen L — Google review
One of my favorite ghost tours I've been on. Chilling and interesting spots and stories. The guide had a clear and loud voice. Loved how he playfully encouraged suspending disbelief instead of skepticism, made the tour creepier. The haunted empty lot walk through was a genuinely scary experience. All while still being family friendly!
Candice W — Google review
Was not very happy with this ghost tour, though the tour started off pretty cool at a creepy church with the guide in costume, it lacked an intimacy that the best walking tours have. Chatting with the guests and seeing where everyone was from and small talk. I found this tour guide to be in character and let’s get it over with as fast as possible. Very hilly walk, fast paced, no bathroom stop despite being told there would be one…had I gone I would have been left behind! We just left the tour 15 minutes early.
Christina B — Google review
This is a great experience for locals and tourists alike. For anyone looking to change up their typical night out, you won't be disappointed if you like evening strolls and some eerie folklore. Our guide was great! They knew how to tell a story very well, making it captivating and spooky - all while throwing in some moments of dry humor. The walk itself is very nice. It takes you through some old alleyways, but also brings you out onto Duckworth Street for some appreciable views. It can get a little rough once you get up to Long's Hill, which may spoil the atmosphere slightly. This of course all depends on timing and luck, so it's really not a knock on the hike itself. Make sure you dress accordingly! You'll definitely want a thermal in the mid to late fall months as it can get quite chilly due to the proximity of the harbour. It's a really fun experience to indulge in with family or friends! Tickets sell quickly, so when the hike is ongoing, make sure you give yourself enough time to purchase!

We did this about 2 years ago with the kids and loved it !! The guide is so entertaining and engaging and does a wonderful job getting into character and story telling. He is what makes the haunted hike what it is. Lived here most of my life and learned things and about places I never knew. Wonderful experience

My family and I had a lot of fun on this haunted walk. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this entertaining outing is worth going to, as you will learn interesting (albeit a tad macabre) facts about St. John's history, while also being captivated by a gifted storyteller. Note: Our guide moved quickly, so we finished in one hour. I mention this because some people in our group were expecting a 75-minute walk.

When visiting Newfoundland, a must-do experience is O'Brien's Whale and Bird Tours in Bay Bulls. Departing from the Avalon Peninsula, the tour ventures through the Witless Bay Ecological Preserve, home to the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America. With 17 species of sea mammals present, including humpbacks, minkes, dolphins, and porpoises, it offers exceptional whale watching opportunities.
Our group of 8 really loved this boat tour! We bought our tickets online ahead of time and so you just need to go into the gift shop to get actual tickets printed before boarding the boat. We went at 2pm and the boat felt full but not crowded, still lots of room to move around and get to the railing to see the different sights. Also, lots of space for parking near the boat and behind the gift shop. We were able to see humpback whales, puffins, plus all kinds of other birds along Gull Island. We even had a treat on the way back of seeing a pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins swim alongside and playing! It was fantastic! The crew were fabulous, keeping us feeling safe, informed about what we were seeing and laughing along with their jokes! Even had one playing live, traditional songs on guitar for us throughout the ride. There is also a small bar and bathroom on-board, for anyone wondering. Overall we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and felt it was money well spent for an iconic activity! We're hoping to bring more family and friends when the next group visit!
Kato B — Google review
We went out with O’Brien’s Whale and Bird Tours in Bay Bulls, and it was fantastic. It’s called the whale and puffin tour, but we knew it wasn’t whale season. That didn’t matter, because when we got to Gull Island there were puffins everywhere. It reminded me of that scene in How to Train Your Dragon when all the dragons fly back to Dragon Island — the sky was full of them. 😁 Our guide, Liam, was a highlight of the whole trip. He’s young but absolutely made for this. He shared so much knowledge in a way that was easy to follow, kept everyone involved, and even sang four songs along the way. His enthusiasm was contagious! On the way back, someone saw dolphins in the distance. Our captain immediately turned the boat so we could get closer, and before long we were surrounded by them, moving quickly through the water. It was so cool to see! This cruise ended up being an alternative after our fishing tour was canceled, but I’m so glad we did it. O’Brien’s gave us a wonderful few hours on the water, and I’d absolutely recommend them. Again, thank you to Liam and crew!
Jessica C — Google review
It was a beautiful day to be on the water. Wrong time of year to see whales but we did see and learn about the Puffins and saw a large sun fish. The staff were fantastic, knowledgeable and entertaining. Lots of singing. We used the shuttle service which was great because it’s a bit of a drive from St John’s. I would definitely book with the O’Briens again. Thank you again for the wonderful experience.

Absolutely an amazing experience. It’s a must do. Recommend getting screeched in while aboard! Every single member of staff was super nice and they really wanted everyone to have a great experience. Really appreciated their patience in making sure everyone got a view of the humpback whales! Such pleasure to be out on the boat with these guys. Suggestion: dress warmer than you think you need to! Really loved the experience.
Nikiii J — Google review
As expected, we didn’t see any whales since they migrate away during this time of year. But we did see eagles, and puffin, as well as the breathtaking landscape around us. The tour guides were informative, funny, and entertaining. There is Irish music playing during the whole tour, and I enjoyed it. I would definitely take this tour again if I’m here in the future.
Karlotta P — Google review
Amazing day out on the water with this crew. They offer shuttle service that picked us up at our hotel and drove us to Bulls Bay. Then we boarded the tour boat. It holds 200 but they only put 100 on so that everyone has an opportunity to have a view. We had a great crew that was super knowledgable of the area and tried their hardest to find us some whales to see today. Unfortunately for us we did not see any but we did get our fill of puffins and other Atlantic birds. A screech ceremony was performed on board for those that opted in and it was amazing watching the boys try to catch a cod for the event. The gift shop was full of mementos for you to take home a souvenir. Staff was top notch. Facilities and tour boat was great. Shuttle service and driver was amazing too. Highly recommend this is you are in the area. Also our host was a great singer and blessed us with a few songs.
Leigh B — Google review
What an incredible outfit this tour company operates. We did the tour out to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Started off with a strong headwind and pouring ran, which was too funny since we decided to start on the upper deck. The tour guide and boat crew were informative, engaged and professional. Plenty of Puffins to see on the island, and a couple of bald eagles on the way. The crew spotted a whale at one point and we followed alongside (from a safe distance) for more than 30 minutes. I highly recommend them!
Jeff V — Google review
Very cool tour. Millions of birds but we got shafted on whales. Maybe ease up on the waves thing on the way back. That doesn't seem necessary. Super nice day, kinda cool but sunny. Liam needs to work on his vocals tho, almost put you at 4 stars strictly for his performance. Need someone to write him better jokes as well.

Fort Amherst, located on the opposite side of the harbor from Signal Hill, offers stunning views and is a great spot for iceberg sightings in late May and early June. The area also provides access to the East Coast Trail. The site features the remains of a historic fort and a picturesque lighthouse. While reaching the fort may be challenging, visitors can enjoy beautiful vistas of colorful houses, ships in the harbor, and even cruise ships passing through.
Exploring Fort Amherst in St. John’s was a highlight of my trip! This historic site, with its iconic lighthouse and WWII remnants, offers a fascinating peek into Newfoundland’s history. The short walk from the parking lot leads to breathtaking views of the Narrows, Signal Hill, and the Atlantic. The rugged cliffs and ocean breeze create a serene vibe, perfect for photos or quiet reflection. It’s a must-visit gem just minutes from downtown!

Fort Amherst is a nice place to visit. Although the old WWII buildings are blocked off, they were interesting to see some 10-15 year ago on a past visit. There is a good view of the narrows, St John’s, and Signal Hill. I came here to see the sunrise in July 2023

The views are spectacular. We decided not to do the guided tour. We parked in the free parking lot below the site and walked up. Cool spot to visit for sure. Not a big place, smallish lighthouse. I'm sure the history is amazing, but not a lot to do here.

Went on a weekday. Walked all the way through for almost 50+ Minutes... You start at the Railway Coastal Museum and walk out of it when you already see the road and keep heading east. You'll come across the Coastal Guard station, Irving fuel terminal and some bits and pieces of the old navy base stuck on the side of the mountain. Came across construction too and the start of Deadman's path trail for hiking. Nothing else to see when finally reaching the fort, but a good view of the ocean, Cape Spear, and Signal Hill.

A must-visit in St. John’s! Fort Amherst offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Narrows. The historic lighthouse, coastal trails, and remnants of WWII gun emplacements make it both scenic and meaningful. It’s peaceful, easy to access, and perfect for photos or a quiet walk. A little hassle in finding a parking spot. Highly recommend for anyone visiting St. John’s!

Located in the heart of historic St. Johns, Newfoundland Chocolate Company is a haven for chocolate lovers. Their flagship Chocolaterie on Duffetts Road offers a delectable range of artisan chocolates and truffles, all hand-made fresh daily. With its large selection of handmade chocolate treats, including specialty chocolates and truffles, this beloved establishment has been a go-to for stocking stuffers and wedding favors for years.
This is a beautiful province. Full of wonderful and friendly people. The sights are truly awesome. I have waited my whole life to go to Newfoundland and hope that I will return. I would recommend this vacation spot.

Friendly staff will help you navigate through the varieties the offer here. Samples are offered freely or when asked. Variety boxes are a great way to bring home a piece of Newfoundland. Free gift wrap is available if asked.

Great gelato and chocolates. Such a variety and great staff.
Doug M — Google review
Great little chocolate place. We were a big fan of the Newfoundland sayings chocolate.
Daniel H — Google review
Nice selection of gift choices. A bit pricey, no samples offered. But a fun place to grab a few souvenirs.
Jacquie ( — Google review
Loved it, the Explorer hot chocolate is the best I've had. The lovable bickering between the employees is hilarious!
Dyngarynth — Google review
I am unable to rate this business higher than 3 stars. The quality of their chocolates easily warrants a 5 star rating, but their prices exceed even their high quality. Perhaps they are only interested in the tourist market and are not concerned about selling to locals.
Adam B — Google review
the best box of chocolates I've ever had! I received a box as part of a wedding gift and I feel in love...such a great experience as they all have such unique, natural and delicious flavours and as a Newfoundlander living away it makes me feel closer to home. I will always order from them as gifts and for my family. Thank you!!!! My favourite is sonny's dream - milk chocolate with blueberry and baked biscotti crumbs 🤤🤤🤤

27North Head Trail

Hiking area
Embark on an exhilarating adventure along the North Head Trail, starting at the iconic Cabot Tower and winding through the gravity-defying delights of St. John's Battery district. This oldest and most popular trail on Signal Hill offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. While some parts may be slippery and less defined, perseverance leads to a rewarding conclusion. The trail can be windy, so it's advisable to bring a good jacket and water while keeping your pack light for the final ascent to the fort.
I started at Battery Road and hiked up to Signal Hill. This is definitely the more difficult direction as it was mostly up hill. There are lots of stairs and rocks and there is a point where they thought it best to fix a chain to the rock face so you have a hand hold and don't fall into the ocean, but it isn't crazy hard. There was an 80 yr old woman who was taking the hike and while I'm proud to say I was able to pass her, she seemed to be doing alright for herself. Lots of great views of the sea, cliffs and city.
Gordon C — Google review
Beautiful trail starting from Signal Hill. From here the majority of the hike is downhill and the views are amazing. Don't forget to relax at the Adirondack chairs for a rest and photo shoot. It can be a very relaxing hike on a sunny day like ours. Very nice experience.
C N — Google review
About medium difficulty going down, hard coming back up. North Head Trail is the hardest trail out of all the trails surrounding Signal Hill. The majority of the trail has guard railing but a small section needs you to hold a chain to traverse the narrow rocks. That being said, that section is fairly small and isn't a point of concern. If you are afraid of heights, you might want to mentally prepare before heading out as some areas are quite steep. In my opinion, this is the best trail out of all the trails in the Signal Hill area and you should try it at least once if you are visiting St. Johns. The views are breathtaking, but windy.
Daniel O — Google review
Amazing views! We walked from the top down and then back to the Johnson Geo Center. Steep descent on stairs from Signal Hill but perfectly safe for anyone, assuming they are fit. Saw whales!
Sean H — Google review
Beautiful trail system that takes you beside the St Johns harbour and up to the top of Signal Hill. Trails are well maintained but do have natural areas that are rocky. Lots of natural points to stop and enjoy the view! I would consider it a moderate hike for most.
Jared C — Google review
Great trail! The views are amazing.
Lee J — Google review
Good hike to break a sweat if you’re going up! Amazing views! If it’s foggy or rainy you won’t see much since it’s a higher point. The trail is intermediate, lots of loose pebbles. The trail is very clear so easy to follow. You can loop around to not go back up the same way if you parked your car somewhere
Natalie D — Google review
Very scenic trail for a nice afternoon hike. The trail ended on the top of signal hill near the castle. Some segments are steep and some don't have hand rails.

28The Queen's Battery Barracks

Historical landmark
The Queen's Battery Barracks is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and hikers exploring Newfoundland and Labrador. The original barracks, which stood for almost 200 years before being rebuilt in the late 1970s, offers great views of St. John's and presents the history of St. John's Harbour. Visitors can also catch sight of various vessels passing through the narrows if timed right.
The big 32 pound guns in the Queens Battery that used to protect the harbour are still in really good condition. You can see the ingenuity of putting railroad wheels and tracks on the bases so you could change the direction the cannon are pointing at. On a path between the Battery and Cabot Tower there are spare cannons lined up that would have been ready to be put into use in a battle if needed. I tried lifting one which of course it was impossibly heavy but you can try your luck. You get a great view of St John’s including the harbour so it is worth coming here just for that! While there are some people looking around it is much less busy compared to other tourist attractions I’ve been to even in the busy Summer tourist season which is great! Remember to pay the $9 adult admission to see the National Park Historic Site as it is worth it! Lots of good hikes in this area as well.
Patrick G — Google review
A nice location to stage a command and defend center at the mouth of the port. Its location is perfect then and now for some of the best viewing spot on Signal Hill. Check out the cannons. Very cool.
C N — Google review
Great stop between the Signal Hill visitor center and the Tower. Pose with a cannon or enjoy the views, but don't miss this stop as it offers additional information to your visit to Signal Hill. See if you can spot the submarine defense bases below or watch the ships coming in and out of the harbor. Whatever you decide to do, just don't skip this stop.
Daniel P — Google review
I'd say its worth the trek. Slightly closer view of the city and shipyard compared to Signal Hill and you get to check out some big decomissioned cannons up close. You can even stand on them. Lots of hiking trails nearby too.

Great views of St. John’s with a unique history. The original barracks stood for almost 200 years before it burnt down and was rebuilt in the late 1970’s. worthwhile visit while you are at signal hill.
Trevor — Google review
Good hike, I personally don’t like heights, and there are couple of places kind steep.
Ed Z — Google review
I enjoyed this place. Take the small trail instead of parking your car at the top of the hill, you can see the place better from many interesting points. I also went next to the sunset, it's beautiful. Make sure to search for the exact hour and minute.

Topsail Bluff Viewpoint Parking is a popular spot for hikers, offering breathtaking views of the ocean, Topsail Beach, Bell Island, and Conception Bay South. The trail takes less than an hour to hike and begins at Topsail Bluff Rotary Park, which features amenities like a playground, gazebo, amphitheater, and picnic sites.
The view from the Topsail Bluff Viewpoint is absolutely stunning! It's only a short hike from the gravel parking spot and well.worth the effort! I will be visiting for a picnic in the near future. A must visit!
Aiden D — Google review
The trail down to the Bluff is short, 4 mins going slow. Loose rock and some mud (can go around this).
Brown R — Google review
Wonderful place if you will get the opportunity to see the sunset too with clouds and all proper conditions
Mohit S — Google review
Amazing view of the ocean, Topsail Beach, Bell Island and all the way south to Conception Bay South! Quite the drop off however, so watch your footing. The path to the bluff was soggy in some sections so a detour through the trees was needed but easily done. Great picnic spot but please pack out your garbage, people!!
R M — Google review
Amazing view, especially late in the evening when the sun is setting. The trail is a little rough, but it is much easier than hiking from the beach below! I just wish people would not litter on the trail.
Scott N — Google review
Easily the best view point on the Avalon peninsula. A last minute stop on a week long trip proved this to be the best location we went to.
Blake S — Google review
Great place to watch the sunset and a beautiful view over Conception Bay South. Only a short walk from the parking though puddles can be an issue.

The East Coast Trail - Deadman's Bay Path Trailhead offers a stunning coastal hiking experience, spanning over 300 km along the Avalon Peninsula. The trail showcases towering cliffs, sea stacks, fjords, and even a natural wave-driven geyser known as the Spout. Hikers can explore abandoned settlements, lighthouses, ecological reserves, seabird colonies, and may even spot whales and icebergs.
This is a 30 min or so walk with enough elevation between the water and road that it's a little intense. Also a lot of the path is quite rocky. The general trail is beautiful, quiet and the water basin at the basic is pretty good to view.
Chris H — Google review
This trail is very difficult in my opinion. Very rocky and steep. it is all downhill going to the water but on the way back I felt sick lol ( it is very steep uphill )it’s so difficult. and it is very hot/ no breeze.
Katelyn M — Google review
Just attempted this little trail after a long day at work. I have read the comments. I can agree with some. it was an excellent time by myself still wherein workbooks and oil stained jeans(mechanic). I am 45 years old completely out of shape and found it to be particularly enjoyable. head out there give it a try. i would recommend. 4.2 of 5.
Chris M — Google review
Decent little hike to Freshwater Bay and back. A casual 40 min hike downhill to the Freshwater Bay beach, and slightly longer back up. Trail is quite rocky, moderate difficulty. You can get away with using runners if it hasn't rained recently, but hiking boots would be helpful with the ankle-twisting terrain and small wet portions. There's one outhouse near the Freshwater Bay beach.
Scott W — Google review
Exellent hike from deadman's Bay to Cape Spear. It was easy in the start but get hard almost at the end. Lot of wind and rocky all the way. Hike is really worth it. Completed it in around 5 hours (one way). I will recommend good hiking shoes. Lot of blue berries in the way; that tastes actually really good.
Adeel K — Google review
Nice trail if you want to see some wild nature and beautiful views.
Sander U — Google review
Remote trail with different types of terrain Especially liked the trail that ran beside the rocky outcrop (I believe that was the dead man's path) Most of it was pretty rocky. Would have stayed longer and hiked further if it wasn't pouring rain

Frontline Action Proshop is an indoor recreation center that has a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy, including laser tag, paintball, Nerf gun battles, and more. The staff are friendly and helpful, making it a great place to spend a rainy day or celebrate a special occasion with family and friends.
Always good fun at affordable prices. I love that this is available for all age groups! Our "guide" was a lot of fun and didn't mind our group being rambunctious and noisy. I can't wait to come back for half price Thursdays in the future or book another party. The party rooms are pretty spacious and I'll probably be bringing a pizza! Though snacks and drinks are available at the counter. 10/10 experience and will definitely be back.
Amy B — Google review
Brought my son here for a birthday party. The staff were helpful and attentive, and they supply all the cutlery and plates to go with the pizza. Kids went around with pump action shotguns that shot soft balls at speeds that did not hurt. He was sad he had to leave, so that's a good sign of a fun experience.
Robert H — Google review
Staff is friendly and the gaming experience is great. Have only done Gellyball a couple times and it was fun both times. Planning to try the laser tag another time.
Shawn B — Google review
We just had our son's 7th birthday party there. It was awesome! All the boys had a blast and the coordinator set up 6 games of laser tag, so it was well organized. The kids got exercise so they were good and hungry. They took a snack break on the 3rd game, which was great. They served the pizza and drinks and the loot bags were provided for a good price. Totally would recommend them for birthday parties!! Great service and the coordinator was excellent with the kids.
Heather T — Google review
This place is great. The staff are quite friendly and very knowledgeable about the different types of paintball gear. Our kids have been here for plenty of lazer tag birthday parties over the years and always have an excellent time. It's also great that we can exchange our Soda Stream bottles here for tanks that are already refilled.
Jason V — Google review
For the entire two hours I had trouble with the iCombat equipment. I probably shot 5 times the entire time, the rest was trying to get it to work. My headband locked up, my gun kept desyncing from the system. I had to go to the staff members 4 times but it was never a permanent fix. I would shoot one bullet and then the gun would stop working. It was terrible and frustrating. Also, it was hot as hell in that room. There was no AC. Then the following morning everyone else that I went with got a free return pass for a round of laser tag but I didn’t. Bad experience.
Chelsea D — Google review
Had an amazing time here with icombat the shock belts make it so realistic. And they are optional or can range in intensity. Ages for our group were 33-63 all had a blast. The lady there was so helpful, and friendly. Can't wait to go again

Everyone there is great. Didn't have a mag for my airsof gun, so Paul ordered it. It was Paul, Sarah & "duke" working the day I was there. They seemed to enjoy working with eachother. Friendly place, helpful staff. Tom is a great fella as well 🤘
