Points of Interest & Landmarks
Located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, The Big Fiddle is a must-see landmark and photography spot. Standing opposite the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion, it is the largest fiddle in the world, celebrating the cultural heritage of Cape Breton Island. Visitors can take pictures with this iconic 17-meter tall monument that weighs 8 tons. Nearby, there are shops and a restaurant offering live music.
Great place to visit if you are in Sydney. It’s right on the boardwalk and there are plenty of places to eat nearby. There is a little market here too. Sydney’s harbour isn’t huge but it is very pleasant to visit. We were there on a Saturday and it wasn’t busy at all. It takes about 5-10 minutes to walk the entire boardwalk.
Dave F — Google review
A fun and iconic landmark! Perfect for photos, and it really captures the musical spirit of Cape Breton. Worth a stop if you’re nearby — you can’t miss it!
F S — Google review
Big fiddle next to the cruise port. It's in good shape and worth a photo but not much more then a road side attraction. It's nice and gives the town something but don't go to far out of your way for it.
Rob S — Google review
Standing proudly on Sydney’s waterfront, the Giant Fiddle is more than just a landmark — it’s a symbol of Cape Breton’s deep musical roots and vibrant Celtic spirit. You can feel the pride of the island the moment you see it towering against the harbour skyline. The area around the fiddle is beautiful and lively, especially on sunny days when the boardwalk fills with music, laughter, and the smell of the ocean. It’s the perfect place for a stroll, some photos, or simply sitting by the water watching the boats go by. There are cafes, local shops, and small markets nearby, making it easy to spend a relaxing afternoon here. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a live performance or local event — a reminder that music truly lives at the heart of Cape Breton culture. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, the Giant Fiddle is a must-see stop that perfectly captures the charm, pride, and rhythm of Sydney. 🎶
Limejuce — Google review
We got off the cruise ship and the fiddle was located in an area off to the right. There were A few small shops and a larger area that featured many local vendors. People were very friendly and there was quite a lot of quality shopping located at port. There was also a large Adirondack chair for a photo opportunity.
Anna C — Google review
We were there on a cruise ship. The mall had lots of small shops set up kind of pop-up places. There's a restaurant. The fiddle is outside at the end of the pier. It's kind of cool
Ede M — Google review
Of course, it's a tourist attraction, but still fun, on a very walkable waterfront area. This area is known for celtic music, so the fiddle makes sense here. Also, we passed a person bagpipes and a mandolin player while walking the area (we were visiting via cruise ship, so they saw us coming,) Loved it.

Really enjoyed Sydney, Nova Scotia. Got to see the Big Fiddle and lots of wonderful small shops of hand crafted items from locals. Highly recommend!

Jost Heritage House, located at 54 Charlotte Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia, is a museum housed in a historic building dating back to 1786. Once the residence of prominent merchant Samuel Sparrow, the house has been meticulously restored to showcase life in the 18th century. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring local history, model ships, antique furniture, marine artifacts, and a fully restored apothecary.
They opened the museum especially for us (a Sunday in early April) because we came on a cruise ship. It was awesome to have a guide take me around and I heard several interesting and funny stories with information on life in the late 1700s and 1800s, ones I never heard before! Great collection and fascinating about the building. Definitely recommend a visit!
Eileen W — Google review
This house is interesting because as you move through the house starting in the basement, you move through different periods starting with colonial times and how they would've cooked 🍳 their food in a fireplace with another brick enclosure where they'd bake their bread. Different rooms have different guides who tell the story of the house. How it was first owned by Samuel Sparrow in 1786 and later bought by Thomas Jost in 1836. The Jost descendants gradually changed it over time. Lastly, they tell of the lady Joan Harriss who bought the house that had gradually become dilapidated and paid to have it restored before turning it into a museum. There is an admission fee of $4 with it free for children and students. It's normal hours are Monday to Friday 9 to 4 p.m. and open any day a cruise 🛳 ship 🚢 is in port.
Ronald W — Google review
House is quirky and hyper unique. Staff are wonderful and enthusiastic about the place and very informative. Anecdotally they gave me a free bottle of water on a hot day when I didn’t have any Canadian cash. Just warm and real folks here. Much love from the USA!

Very interesting piece of island history. The staff were also very informative and entertaining. I am super curious about the anchor they have and hope they learn more about it when I come back. Have actually started thinking about getting that anchor tattooed on my body lol - it was so cool. A great place to stop by and interesting things in their collection

Cossit House Museum, built in 1787, is a well-preserved historical site in Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is one of the oldest surviving houses in the city and offers a glimpse into 18th-century life on Cape Breton Island. The museum showcases period decor and offers guided tours by individuals dressed in 18th-century attire. Visitors can explore activities such as lace making, butter churning, candle making, and weaving.
We had a great visit! We had an option between a guided tour or self guided, and we opted for the guided experience, which was thorough yet brief enough not to be long winded. Afterwards we had the opportunity to poke around by ourselves and check out the lovely garden out back. A great way to spend $5 and 90 minutes.
Jenn B — Google review
A beautifully preserved eighteenth century house, one of the oldest in North America. Set out very well, and kitchen garden was very interesting.
Martin R — Google review
It was an accurate display of life hundreds of years ago. The artifacts and house show quite explicitly the lifestyles then. It was both interesting and worthy of the visit.

$2 per person and you get choice of guided or self guided with a sheet of paper describing each room. Two women in period costume are there to guide you if you like. Interesting little house that highlights what was considered normal back then. The poor woman of the house had 13 children and died in childbirth at the age of 46!!! It's great they could preserve some of the old tools, books, clothing, etc and you get a sense of life back then. Short walk over after visiting the giant fiddle.

The museum showcases an impressive collection of 20th-century Canadiana and Americana, featuring artifacts like metal clip-on roller skates, wringer washing machines, motion picture equipment, household appliances, tools, uniforms, projectors, sewing machines, cameras and more.
Very impressive collection of the area's history. Not just books and pictures but artifacts, instruments, household appliances, tools, uniforms, projectors, sewing machines, cameras, from years past. Records of marriages, schools and local war heroes listed on carefully edited binders. A window into the past history of Whitney Pier that was once a thriving neighborhood when the steel factory was around.

Very interesting museum. Community came together to keep their history. Many volunteers offered free delicious oat cakes, coffee and perfect tea.

Small with lots of local history. The curator spent some time explaining some of the more interesting artifacts and even provided some traditional biscuits that one of the patrons make for the guests. Worth a stop for the local history.

The Cape Breton Miners Museum in Glace Bay offers an immersive experience for the whole family, with underground tours of a real coal mine and a visit to The Miners Village, featuring a company store and a home from the 1850-1900 period. Visitors can also enjoy a meal at the Miners Village Restaurant.
What a great little museum. This was part of our cruise excursion and thought it was something different so we pick this. So glad we did. The former miners that work at the museum have/give quite the insight to what it was like to work in the mines and the conditions they had to endure. There is a regular museum portion that has items used in and related to mines and miners. Then there is an underground mine portion (wasn't really ever a mine) to stimulate the conditions inside the mines. You have to wear a hard hat as it gets pretty short and narrow in some areas. Learned a lot in our short time there, definitely worth a stop
Shula R — Google review
This is a gem of a tourist location. Our tour guide, I believe his name was Leo, was wonderful. He is a retired miner and his tour of the mine was just so captivating. Don’t just visit this site, be sure to take advantage of the mine tour to try and even get an inkling of what mineworkers went through for their country. These people who risked their lives to mine coal are to be revered and honored for their sacrifice. The tour included stories from an actual miner, a short but interesting video about mining, then an actual tour of a mine. I would suggest it for all ages. Helmets provided.
Riversong P — Google review
As a daughter of an Albertan Coal Miner, I wanted to see & experience what is was to be below ground. Impressive. Highly recommend to anyone. I’m more grateful now, than ever before, after an experiencing the conditions that my dad persevered to put food on our 1970’s dining table. The guides tell personal sorties that truly put you in their shoes. Our guide had 28 years below the earth. Wow! Highly recommend.
Tara B — Google review
Fascinating place and well worth the time. Terry was our host and he was a wealth of knowledge about mining operations, the mining lifestyle, the struggle to unionize, the struggles to survive. It's easy to see why the bonds between miners are so strong, since they literally have each other's back multiple times a day. A full museum visit includes exhibits, a virtual tour into a mine, actually descending into a mine shaft with your guide, and memorials, some outdoors, to miners who have lost their lives on the job. There is also an adjacent restaurant that gets good reviews for its homestyle cooking. We enjoyed our visit very much. And learned a lot doing it!
Scott H — Google review
We did a sunday morning tour with Leo, he did a fantastic job of explaining the history sharing stories and making uou feel comfortable while in the mine. I highly recommend this tour it was an amazing experience. Thanks so much Leo and the awesome crew at the museum, I will definitely be coming back with the kiddos. 👍 I would recommend calling in advance to find out approximate tour times, although the staff is very accommodating. The tours take about an hr an a half. They also have a cute gift shop and coal that you can buy as souvenirs.
Sonya S — Google review
Absolutely amazing. Tour underground was awesome. To see the coal on the wall was really neat as your walking in the actual mine. Not recommended if you have a sore neck as you have to slow walk/crouch. Our your guide, Terry had the most amazing stories made us all laugh and really enjoy the walk.
Maureen O — Google review
Great visit. Very friendly staff. I recommend doing the underground tour! Our guide Sheldon was fantastic!!! I give him 5 stars! He was super entertaining, very knowledgeable and passionate about his job. Sheldon made the whole experience feel very personal and real. It was a great experience! Our overnight stay was great. Very easy, quiet and hassle free! Thank you!
Mama T — Google review
If you are in the area the Cape Breton Miners Museum is a must see. The museum itself is absolutely incredible, but if you want the full experience a 100% recommend the virtual tour. I'm short so the low ceilings weren't really a problem ( but taller people watch your head) helmets are also provided for everyone. The guides are knowledgeable and the stories they share touched my heart.

Large open easy-going walking trails with lots of benchs picnics tables and side trails. A small beach area too to walk as well. Great spot to walk dogs as well and a large parking lot. Tends to be active. Lots of apple trees and large trees in general. And a great spot to feed birds. It was an old estate ran by an admiralty and some small ruins still are around like foundations and a well. Overall a good place that takes just over an hour to walk at a leisurely pace.

One of the nicest golf simulators I've played. My second time here today. Hundreds of courses to choose from. Plenty of clubs to use if you don't have your own or you may also bring your own to use. Security will check them as you enter. Check-in is at the casino restaurant. There is a nice lounge area with complementary tea, coffee, and soft drinks. $35/hr is very reasonable for a sim. I recommend one hour per golfer to complete 18 holes comfortably.

Quite possibly the best nachos in all of Canada. They dont just pile on the tortillas and then dump the cheese and toppings over top… they actually do a good job layer tortillas, cheese (shredded and melted queso), toppings, and then another layer of each. The only thing to critique is that we added on chicken at $4.99 and it certainly was not $5 worth of chicken there.

A small creek runs through the area with several bridges, making it an ideal place for a leisurely walk with your dog. Very nice nature trail. Path is well maintained and not a lot of incline. Perfect for people with mobility issues, or anyone looking for a nice, quick hike within city limits. Lots of squirrels and bluejays present in Oct. Would recommend.
B M — Google review
This is one of our favorite places in the world. The natural, unspoiled beauty combines with well maintained, family friendly trails. There are always friendly people, some alone, some with friends, kids, and dogs, but it never feels crowded. The streams are gorgeous and provide a relaxing, soothing sound.
Dana C — Google review
Great trail considering it's right in Sydney. Small creek running through it with lots of small bridges to cross back and forth. Excellent for a chill walk with the dog. Lots of birds and squirrels to keep them entertained. Downside is that it is so close to the highway in spots that it can get a little noisy with the urban sounds you're trying to escape from. Be careful in the winter as it can get icy in spots. They are constantly working to improve the trails, with tree cleanup and new gravel in some areas.
Glen W — Google review
Great trail. It’s possible to walk with a stroller but some areas are quite bumpy.

Such a beautiful trail and very well maintained. Love that it is dog friendly and there are always people walking along as well and are very friendly as well.

Well kept trails, they’re quite a few different routes that intertwine and some do not show on All Trails so I got ‘lost’ a couple times but never hard to find my way back on track. I think once a person has been a few times and has the lay of the land it’s a fantastic place for short or long walks! Beautiful scenery along the brooks too.

A touching tribute to the merchant mariners who made a tremendous contribution during the Second World War by sending convoys of ships to Europe with vital supplies such as coal, steel, fuel, and other items vital to the war effort. A total of 177 convoys with an average of 14 ships each sailed from Sydney during the battle of the Atlantic. Many ships, and lives, were lost but many more were saved with thanks to the merchant mariners. For those with wheelchairs, rollators, or those pushing prams/baby buggies, this statue is just along the boardwalk which is flat and level: accessible parking is available at the cruise pavilion. Public restrooms are also available in the cruise pavilion.

I am often underwhelmed by monuments: the real point of the monument does not easily come across. Not so in this case: this monument is haunting and I immediately understood the incredible service these people provided. Well done, Sydney, to honour the Merchant Mariners in such a fitting way!
Meinrad M — Google review
A beautiful monument to remember our history and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Erected in 2016, this remembers the sailors who perished on the convoys leaving from Sydney Harbour. Worth a look and a read

This is an amazingly powerful sculpture that will resonate with all sailors as well as those who know men who were in the service that risked their lives to bring supplies to the Allies in WWII. Wonderfully crafted, even if long overdue. A great addition to Sydney and the harbor. Capt. C. Townsend
Corning T — Google review
Built to honor the sacrifice's made by member's of the Merchant Marine who played a very large part in the transfer of both soldiers and war materials from Canada to Europe during the Second World War. The Port of Sydney was well defended during those years with a submarine "net" stretched along the entrance as well as land based fortifications surrounding the coastline. Most of those can still be found as you travel along the coast with the most notable being Fort Petrie. The Fort is now being re-constructed as a museum itself.

Hiking Trails
Located in Cape Breton County, the Coxheath Hills Trailhead offers a challenging hike for outdoor enthusiasts. The trail starts steep but quickly immerses hikers in nature, providing opportunities to spot bald eagles, waterfalls, and breathtaking views. Hikers can choose from paths of varying difficulty levels, catering to different adventure preferences.
Definitely make sure you can handle a hill. The first 3/4km of the hike is about a 45° uphill on the main trail. If that’s not your cup of tea there are many other starting points that are not as difficult on your knees (or lungs if a smoker) so I would recommend checking out the trail map to see what would best suit you. But no matter what you decide the views are absolutely stunning!
Braedan C — Google review
Beautiful trail with moderate challenge steep on some sections — great views of Sydney Harbour, Howie Centre, and waterfalls. Trails are well-marked, but some sections can get muddy and loose gravel, so wear good hiking boots. Perfect for a 2–3 hour nature escape. Highly recommend, especially during fall colours!
Amritpal S — Google review
This is a pretty solid hike and definitely a good something to do if you're looking for a hike near Sydney. If you start on the main trail, the first 20 minutes are basically straight up. Its pretty slippery on the gravel and coming down is worse, but its great exercise. The rope supports are not super helpful. The rest of the hike is lovely but mostly in the woods. The western trail is poorly marked and easy to miss. Overall, it was a good experience.
Gabriel K — Google review
We loved the trails at Coxheath Hills. The red trail is rated moderate which I think applies to the joggers running up the hill, not the rest of us. It is a tough climb if you aren't in great shape. We aren't, but we took it as a challenge. We made it to the top and the views were 100% worth it. We decided to complete the purple trail and head back down. The purple trail was so much easier. Beautiful forest trail, easily followed, with loads of mushrooms, butterflies and birds along the way. We could not find the yellow trail, we think we figured out where one end of it is. It is overgrown and might get more use if there was a sign or something near the entrances. We will deffinitely walk the trails again on our next visit home.
Darlene Y — Google review
Nice hike that will definitely get your heart rate up. Decent view from the top with benches that is overlooking Sydney harbour. Near the top is "Pittman Lodge" where you can enter and sign a guest book and take a seat for a rest before hiking back to the bottom.
Mike H — Google review
Great hike! As others have said, the first part of the hike from the main trail head is extremely steep. Once up, it is much easier. To note, as of July 2025, the Western Trail loop is closed. We went up from the main trail head and descended via the access road route to the alternate trail head and then walked back along the road to pick up our car. If you find the idea of the steep section too daunting, just ascend and descend via the secondary access point.
Michael W — Google review
The first time we've done this and honestly it is one of the best trails but one of the hardest trails we've done. I really did have trouble at parts but there was a nice view. I was expecting more from the view to be honest with you. I enjoyed the hike up though. It does level off after about ten minutes or twenty minutes you will have an easier time after that. I really and truly felt accomplished after doing this trail. Wonderful day and an even grater time. The door is normally open in the cabin if you do that main trail. We didn't do the western loop trail, but it's five k and really seemed nice, but we didn't have time.

25-minute walk from the cruise port is this small oddly shaped long park. Not really fair to judge a park on a rainy foggy day, but it was lacking in some typical park amenities such as water fountains, bench seating, garbage cans, and most importantly public restrooms (did see one Porta potty). Some of the steam water wasn't clean and grass was ready for a cut, but still overall looked nice and sure it is appreciated by residents, particularly on a nice sunny day when the amphitheatre has music.

Went to the Women's World Curling, it was great, mind you the parking sucks, especially when you are handicapped and thought because there were back doors you could get in them....NOT , had a long walk to the front of the building , stupid set up, go up a load of stairs, walk across a platform about 30 ft. long and than back down a bunch of stairs, especially using a cane, I usually use my walker, what the heck would have happened than. I only took my cane as I knew our seats were down front, but thought there was a different level you could go in to get to our seats. I actually asked the site where I bought my tickets if there was handicapped seating and they didn't reply, so we wanted to go to the game and didn't want to not be able to get tickets, so I had no choice but to purchase them. The game was great, a great experience, but enjoy watching it on television better, you can see the close up plays etc. Last time we were at this facility was to see Bryan Adams quite a few years ago for our anniversary, the prices for the last concert there just after things went back after Covid were ridiculously priced. I believe we paid $70.00 a ticket for the first concert and the cheapest this last concert was $500.00 a ticket, I don't know how they sold out or sold any for that matter...I love Bryan Adams but there's a certain price point I will stop at no matter who it is for.

The Old Sydney Society is a charming museum in Cape Breton County that showcases a variety of exhibits relating to the natural and social history of the area. It operates on a donation basis and relies on community contributions for its collection. While it provides a brief overview of Sydney's history, it does not extensively delve into any particular period. The museum harmonizes well with other nearby museums and the ghost walk, making it an excellent addition to one's visit to Sydney.
While waiting for the Ferry me and my mom visited this small museum. It deals with the local history of the city (and region) and does focus a lot on fishing and local culture. I enjoyed it but it only takes a few hours, or less, to go through.

🎻Great Place to See Nature, Breathe the Fresh Air🎻 If you're visiting Sydney from the port, you'll inevitably walk through Mariner's Park. It was built to honor the memory of the merchant seamen who lost their lives during the Conflict of Wars, and contains several statues and monuments that convey the history of the times. The bank was erected when the Sydney Steel Plant, the major event in the industrialization of the area, was being built. Lovely little spot to take the kids on a rainy day! The equipment is big enough that parents can go in to get a child, if needed, and there is lots of comfy seating around the perimeter. Most of the side lining is mesh so you have good sight lines while your children are playing. There are toys and snacks available and lots of room inside and outside of the play structure. There is not much in the way of mats or toys for really small ones so bring a blanket. The building looks to have been a school previously and the bathroom is down the hall. Good signage for location for first time attendees. They also do birthday parties (private, after hours only).

Doug I — Google review
To go and just play there it is great. My son loves it. Booking a birthday party however is another story. They are extremely disorganized and unprofessional. I booked a party from 2-4 and a week before I sent them a message asking at what time would we be able to go and decorate the party room. They told me 2:30! Half hour into the actual party. I understand I only had the actual party room from 3-4 but the party I booked in total was 2-4 so anyone unless told otherwise would expect to be able to decorate before the party time frame. When I questioned them they told me I misunderstood and made it out to be my fault when I was never told I wouldn't be able to decorate prior to the party and I have seen others decorating the room for the party prior to kids being there. It was like they overbooked and they were trying to cover it up. They expected me to leave all my food and decorations in the car for half hour then rush to get the room set up while our guests were playing with my son on his birthday. Further more the customer service has been terrible. They told me they would refund my deposit and asked for my email to e transfer. Then they never sent it. 4 hours later I called and the girl told me she would have to get her manager to call me. No one ever did. 5 hours later I received my deposit back via etransfer with a message "sent". So very unprofessional.

Been there more then once for their advertised open time for it to be closed. Both times sat for a minimum of 10 minutes waiting to see if they would open and they didn’t. I messaged their Facebook and politely asked if their Facebook page had the correct hours and explained we’ve been there twice this year right at opening and they were not infect open. Only to be basically called a liar because they “checked their log” and staff was indeed there and the doors were open at 9:30. I checked the doors at 9:30 and again at 9:35 and no they weren’t. To be told “I checked the log book and staff was there, the doors were opened at 9:30 and I’m not sure what the problem is, cheers.” Won’t be back, will stick to McDonalds Playground instead. Cheers!

This is a Cenotaph park and provides for a little green space and trees at Ashby Corner. Its most popular use though is as a toboggan run in the winter. The sounds of kids having fun on this easy to access and use slope is perfect for all ages.

Its good to sled there, but there's just too many trees i see people get hit by them all the time I feel like they should remove a tree for the people that sled there.

Summit Recreation Park in Scotchtown opened on August 28, 2013. The Park is located on a remediatied former waste rock disposal site for the area’s coal mines. Summit Park provides the local community with a walking trail, skating pond, all-terrain vehicle trails and a parking lot on a large tract of land between Scotchtown and New Waterford Lake. Between 1911 and 1973, the site was used by the Dominion Coal Company for the disposal of coal waste rock from the nearby Dominion No. 12, No. 16 and No. 18 collieries. The waste rock was reprocessed from 1981 to 1987 to recover residual coal. Remediation work began in 2009 and ECBC worked with the New Waterford Fish and Game Association on the development of the park and with the Isle Royale ATV Club to design all-terrain trails. The Summit Park property is one of 53 coal mining-related sites in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality being remediated and redeveloped as community parks that pay tribute to Cape Breton’s coal mining history and provide recreational and healthy living opportunities for residents and visitors.
