Registan Square, also known as the 'Sandy Place,' is a historic public square in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It features three stunning madrasas built between the 15th and 17th centuries. The city has preserved ancient crafts like embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, copper engraving, ceramics, wood carving and painting.
If you have to assign a colour to Uzbekistan, it would have to be blue. There’s blue everywhere: in the tiles that adorn its madrasahs, mosques and mausoleums, in the intricate geometric patterns that inhabit the walls of its homes, restaurants, parks, train stations and public buildings, and in the sky above where it’s just blue, blue, blue. Blue everywhere. It is a reminder of where Uzbekistan is in the world: in Middle Earth, where civilization began, where East meets West, where empires collide and die. There’s one place here that is as mythical as El Derodo, Xanadu and Neverland: Samarkand. It is an ancient place that has had many names. It has witnessed many wars, and given birth to many of the world’s greatest wonders, among them Ulugh Bek’s great observatory and his star catalogue. Samarkand was the nexus through which all the tributaries of the ancient Silk Road converged. Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan marched their glorious armies here on their way to conquer the world. Millions have died in its fertile valley, their souls now haunting its low mountain ridges, its orchards and vineyards, under the harsh desert light. It has existed since the dawn of civilization, and it continues to thrive, still a calm oasis in a region where war is always just a border away.

The light show I saw didn’t start at exactly 8. There was a break between two light shows and the second one was much more interesting than the first, so make sure you stay longer enough.

A breathtaking masterpiece of Islamic architecture! Registan Square is a must-visit — rich in history, stunning tilework, and awe-inspiring beauty. Truly the heart of Samarkand. 🇺🇿📸

Nice to see. 100,000 entrance for foreigners is steep bc inside you’ll just see souvenir sellers in each of the 3 buildings. View from outside is free and in my opinion better than inside.
James W — Google review
Beautiful place with shops inside the arcade selling Uzbeki clothes artifats jewellery etc. go at the time near sunset so that you can enjoy the place’s beauty in daylight as well as night time after lighting up. There is also one light and sound show at 9 pm daily showing Uzbek’s history which is also nice .

An electric atmosphere at night. Colourful lights all around the ancient building brighten up the whole area. Also, it wasn't too crowded.

It is a magnificent place. A true wow factor of uzbekistan. In one of these madrasa great thinkers like mullah jami and Razi studied and lectured. There is grave of muhammad bin jafar sadiq here too

Shah-i-Zinda is a must-see mausoleum complex in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The site features ornately decorated tombs and ancient mosaic-tiled mausoleums, some of which are the final resting places of anonymous individuals. The narrow lanes between the mausoleums offer a memorable experience as you explore this stunning necropolis.
Absolutely the most amazing place in Samarkand! The original well preserved tiling here is exceptional, as many of the buildings have minimal restoration. The restored work is also jaw dropping for its unique geometry and colors, and seeing where the restoration began in relation to preserved original facades offers a truly unique architectural and historical experience you seldom find. It strikes a perfect balance between preservation and restoration, to my mind.
Collin R — Google review
It is my favourite place in Samarkand, a must see. The place is a bit isolated from the other landmarks, on the side of Afrosiob. But you have to visit it. Many finely decorated centuries old mausoleum. A good view on the city. It is a holy place, come with proper clothing.
Eric P — Google review
A must visit when you’re in the city and I was blown away with the beauty. Fortunately it wasn’t too busy when I visited but I can imagine the crowds during peak season would be huge, so consider visiting early. You can easily pay by card to enter and the fee is small - only about £3 when I went. There’s lots of steps throughout the complex which can be tough in the heat, but it’s well worth it. Plenty of signs explain the different structures inside and there’s a couple of options to pick up a souvenir too if you want. A truly fantastic complex which you must visit if you’re in the city.
Steve B — Google review
Giving it 4 stars because the main attraction: Tomb of Quotham Ibn Abass is not visible. The patters and blue tiles are mesmerizing. Make sure to come here quite early because it could quickly become a bazzar and "best picture" race. Entre fee is reasonable and there is a nice view of Bibi Khanum Mosque just up the stairs on the right. Most people miss it.
Rachad K — Google review
Shah-i-Zinda necropolis is a must visit site. These are combination of Royal Mosoleums. Mosoleums for female royals are super beautiful. 3D glazed tiles, calligraphy & intricately carved wooden doors are just amazing. Every building is beautiful. I preferred to visit in the evening & it was awesome. Less people & more time to admire the beauty. Ticket is 50000 som about US$5. I suggest not to miss Shah-i-zinda necropolis.
Waseem — Google review
Shah-i-Zinda necropolis is an absolute marvel! This stunning complex is a treasure trove of beautifully crafted mausoleums, each one more breathtaking than the last. As you step through the majestic gates, you're immediately struck by the kaleidoscope of blue tiles, majolica, and domes that seem to dance in the sunlight. These are the unforgettable highlights for me. Intricately Carved Wooden Doors Each door is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, adorned with delicate patterns and designs. Majestic Blue Domes The vibrant blue hues seem to shimmer and glow, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Stunning Tile Work The intricate tile work is simply awe-inspiring, with delicate floral patterns and geometric designs Tips for Visitors Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture stunning photos. Wear comfortable shoes and modest clothing. Take your time to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship. Rating 5/5 stars Shah-i-Zinda necropolis is an absolute must-visit when in Samarkand. Be prepared to be awestruck by the beauty and grandeur of this incredible complex!
Olevia C — Google review
Visiting Shah-i-Zinda (Shohi-Zinda Yodgorligi) which is one of Samarkand’s most remarkable sites, both historically and spiritually was amazing. This necropolis, dating back as early as the 9th century, is believed to house the grave of Qusam ibn Abbas, cousin of Prophet Muhammad, making it an important pilgrimage destination. The tilework and Timurid architecture are simply breathtaking, and walking through its narrow passageways feels like stepping into another era. The entrance fee is 50,000 soms, and the ticket allows for multiple entries the same day, which is convenient if you want to return later. The site is still very much active for faithfuls, and there is ongoing restoration work to preserve its beauty. Dressing modestly is essential, men should cover below the knees, and women with open tops will need to cover up as well. Green Scarfs would be provided if you aren't dressed modestly. For the best experience, visit early in the morning for a peaceful atmosphere or towards evening when the light makes the mosaics glow beautifully. Overall, it’s a fascinating blend of history, devotion, and artistry;definitely worth a visit if you’re in Samarkand.

The Bibi-Khanym Mosque is a vast and partially restored 1400s mosque with a striking blue-tiled dome, making it one of the most notable landmarks in Samarkand. The city offers a glimpse into its rich history through attractions like the Registan Square, Gur-e-Amir mausoleum, Shah-Zinda necropolis, and Ulugbek Observatory. Visitors can also explore the vibrant Siab Bazaar to sample local delicacies and shop for traditional crafts.
In the northeast of the city center of Samarkand stands what remains of one of the most beautiful and largest mosques in the Islamic world: the Bibi Khanym Mosque. On May 11, 1399, the foundation stone was laid, and in five years a mosque was built that was indeed unparalleled in the world. During those five years, Timur was mainly on the warpath and his wife Saray Mulk Khanym (a.k.a. Bibi Khanym) oversaw the progress of the works. Timur Lenk had his architects and craftsmen explore and stretch the boundaries of what was then architecturally possible, which did not benefit the structural stability of the mosque. On his return to Samarkand in 1404, Timur, dissatisfied with certain details and the pace of construction, immediately had things changed, especially the 41-meter-high dome. As a result, the first bricks began to fall from this dome after just a few years. In the almost two centuries that followed the death of Timur Lenk, the mosque was renovated and reinforced several times until Abdullah Khan II stopped work on the mosque at the end of the 16th century. This was the beginning of a long period of decay, weathering and plundering. Fortunately, the Soviets began extensive and long-term restorations in 1974, so that visitors can now enjoy this monumental building again. After passing the 35-meter-high pishtaq of the entrance, you enter the courtyard (64x76m), which used to be completely paved with marble. The two smaller domes on the sides tower proudly above the galleries and form the prelude to the main building with an equally enormous pishtaq and the hidden behind it, a 41 meter high turquoise dome. Although the Bibi Khanym mosque is actually a restored ruin, this is a "ruin" that still impresses and overwhelms. Don't miss it!

Even though I didn’t enter into the mosque, it’s beautiful to see from outside. It’s next to the bazaar, but there is a tranquil atmosphere. Very safe.
Shioka O — Google review
It looks fascinating from outside. But I don’t think it worths to pay both areas to enter 75k som. There are many shops inside and that is all. It is sad to see they turn here into shops. The grand main mosque, dedicated to Timur's wife. It was once considered one of the largest structures in the world. Legend has it that the architect fell in love with Bibi Khanym and wanted to leave his lips on it. This love story is the mosque's romantic legend.
R. B — Google review
The entrance was 75k. The mosque is under construction, however you can sightsee the inside square. It’s really beautiful and great to see. We enjoyed it 🥰
Wioleta M — Google review
You don’t have to pay to enter the courtyard. Unless you want a guided tour to learn about its history, you can get the best pictures and experience from outside. Definitely worth a look when visiting the Bozori.

Bibi-Khanym Mosque, A Timurid Masterpiece. The Bibi-Khanym Mosque stands as one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring architectural complexes in Samarkand. Its vast scale and opulent decoration symbolized the wealth and power of Amir Timur (Tamerlane) and his empire. Constructed between 1399 and 1404, using the spoils of Timur’s campaign in India, it was named after Bibi-Khanym, the nickname of Saray Mulk Khanym, Timur’s senior wife. The complex features a grand congregational mosque with a monumental entrance (iwan), towering minarets, and a massive dome. Two smaller side mosques are also part of the design. However, Timur’s architectural vision exceeded the engineering capabilities of the time. The structure was too ambitious, and signs of deterioration appeared even before construction was complete. Work stopped in 1405 following Timur’s sudden death. Timur’s grandson, Ulugh Beg, is known to have used a monumental marble Quran stand within the mosque, on which the famous Quran of Caliph Uthman (Osman) was displayed during Friday prayers. The Bibi-Khanym Mosque remained in use until the 17th century, when the Tilla-Kari Mosque was built to replace it. Restoration efforts began in the 1970s as part of a broader campaign led by Uzbekistan’s first president, Islam Karimov, to revive the architectural legacy of the Timurid era.
Lefteris S — Google review
Bibi Khanym Mosque is one of the most iconic and historic landmarks in Samarkand, originally built in the 15th century under the reign of Amir Temur. The grand entrance gate is impressive, featuring a striking blue dome and beautiful floral engravings that reflect classic Timurid architecture. The entry fee is 100,000 UZS, which is reasonable for such a historic monument. However, the site seems to be in need of better maintenance. The main mosque building is currently closed due to structural damage, and only two smaller side mosques are open to visitors. The entrance gate appears faded and slightly dirty, which gives a neglected feel to such a significant monument. It’s highly recommended that the authorities take proper measures to preserve and restore the site. Inside the complex, there is a small garden where visitors can sit and relax, offering a peaceful break during your visit. Despite some maintenance issues, the mosque remains a must-visit due to its historical and architectural value.
Kaif K — Google review
Bibi-Khanym Mosque is truly breathtaking, an architectural masterpiece that carries so much history and soul. Walking through the grounds, you can almost feel the echoes of the past. I really enjoyed my visit and learned a lot about its significance, which made the experience even more special. It’s one of those places that leaves you pausing in awe, both for its beauty and the stories it holds. I definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Uzbekistan, no trip to Samarkand feels complete without seeing this gem.

Platan is a renowned hotel-restaurant in Samarkand, offering traditional Uzbek cuisine alongside European dishes. The establishment is known for its romantic ambiance and homey setting, with lush greenery adorning the arches at the entrance. Guests can indulge in Uzbekistan's national dish, plov, as well as European delicacies like tuna cooked in a Spanish Josper oven or grilled salmon steak. The restaurant also features a classy interior and a summer terrace, providing an excellent dining experience.
Review for the restaurant - the service here is an amazing, the food is delicious. Nice atmosphere - live music. So good we went twice and all dishes were good. Best dinners we had in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Just go!!
Sansira S — Google review
⸻ Horrible service. We called ahead and were told it was fully booked. When we arrived, the terrace was full, but the main hall had several free tables. We sat there, but the live music was unbearably loud. We asked several times to change tables, but the staff were unhelpful. As the terrace remained full and the noise indoors was excessive, we were about to leave when we noticed another dining room—quiet and with plenty of free tables—so we moved there, asking to be notified if a terrace table became available. Service remained poor throughout dinner. I am vegetarian and ordered a cheese plate, but was brought a chicken plate instead, with the explanation that they had run out of cheese. We sent it back, and minutes later they managed to serve the cheese plate after all—unacceptable. During the meal, we saw free terrace tables through the window, yet no one informed us or offered to move us, despite our earlier requests. After dinner, we asked to have our beers outside, but were told again that all tables were taken. I went out to speak directly with the terrace manager, who happily offered us a table—contradicting what the indoor staff had just said. In summary, the service consisted of young, inexperienced, and poorly trained staff, resulting in an uncomfortable and frustrating experience.
Pascual C — Google review
We went to the restaurant for dinner without a reservation. The outside area was full, we were offered a beautiful table inside. The interior is astonishing. Every detail is very beautiful. The waiter spoke good English and gave us a lovely recommendation. We had a t-bone steak and the best Lamb Ribs I’ve ever had. It was soft and juicy - and crispy on the right parts. I recommend coming here! Lovely romantic experiences
Tina G — Google review
Was recommended in some travel guides so we decided to check it out. The welcome was very nice. They said they are booked out but we got accommodated with a time limit of one hour which we apreciated. After that all went a bit downhill. The service was actually really rude and bad. All questions were answered in an annoyed rude tone and all food got delivered cold… We understand that service industry is a challenging job and everybody can have a bad day but its the same amout of effort to be nice/neutral than absolutely rude. The prices were ok and the menu is huge. Also of course the taste was fine but far from wow factor. We let the manager know at the end and she recieved the feedback in a very open way and said they will work on it. I apreciate that. Would I recommend this place to go again ? No not really
JF F — Google review
Came here for dinner since we stayed across the street. The drinks were good, caprese salad appetizer was delicious, so I figured the filet mignon I ordered would follow suit. This is essentially what they dropped in front of me. From my steak knowledge, that cut is not filet mignon. That’s most likely eye of round. It also was cooked medium well, or even well done. So I poured all the sauce on it to help the dryness which it didn’t. I wanted to push through and eat it but because it was so dry and overcooked, I could not. I asked the waiter about the cooked level and he said that “all of their meats are cooked medium well” so in that case I said okay I’ll just eat it. Not sure if I’d go back knowing their meats are cooked medium well. My partners meal was good though so maybe just avoid the steaks if you come here.
Kody M — Google review
Good ambience and location. However disappointed. We ordered for baked beetroot salad. It was cold, few pieces of boiled beets, NOT baked and mostly arugula leaves, feta cheese cubes. The pepper from the pepper shaker was over. I had checked and the server didn't like me asking for it. Lastly, my friend had asked for a fish dish. And I had asked for grilled vegetables which was written separately on the menu as a side dish. They brought the fish with grilled vegetables. The server said, the chef had mixed the 2 dishes. Saving grace was the delicious mashed potato. Most important point is, the reviews on the menu say that it is vegan and vegetarian friendly. However it is NOT so. There are NO vegetarian options in the main course.
Neeta K — Google review
My experience at Platan was a bit mixed. While the food was definitely good—I particularly enjoyed the warm salad Platan, which was delicious—and the general design of the restaurant is very comfortable, it didn't quite meet my expectations for an authentic experience. I would recommend this place if you're looking for a pleasant meal in a nice setting. However, for those specifically seeking a deeply authentic cultural or culinary experience, you might find it a bit more adapted to a general taste. A solid choice, but with a note on authenticity.
Serafima S — Google review
The location is very good in a quite neighborhood and was in a walkable distance from our hotel. The food was super tasty, the service was moderate as only one waiter could speak little English. The atmosphere was nice and the restaurant is clean. Prices might be a little higher than what you expect in Samarkand but the quality of the food and the cleanliness deserves it (in our opinion).

The Hazrat Khizr Mosque, also known as the Khizr Khan Mosque, is a revered Islamic site in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It is named after Khizr, a legendary figure associated with water and symbolizing eternal life. The mosque has undergone reconstructions and renovations over the centuries but still holds its spiritual significance for devout Muslims. Situated near Shah-Zinda and Bibi-Khanym, it offers stunning views of the surrounding landmarks from its minaret.
The mosque is built on a hill, making it a great viewpoint to see the city. From here, you also get a fantastic view of Bibi-Khanym Mosque. The mosque itself features stunning architecture. Entry is free, and it’s located along the pedestrian walkway, making it easy to walk from Registan Square to Hazrat Khizr Mosque while enjoying the beautiful cityscape.

Very good monument at the heart of Samarkand, must visit if you are in Samarkand. Very clam and well maintained. Very near from Registan Square and Shah I Zinda. It provides scenic view of Samarkand city. We spend around 1 hr here and clicked good pics.

Sitting atop a hill, this mosque presents a great place to take in the view of the city. It is also a good place to sit and take a break. The winds can really ramp up on a hot day. You can offer prayers here and the Quran is being recited regularly at this place, so it is a great place to visit.
Taniyyus S — Google review
Visiting Hazrat Khizr Mosque (Hazrati Xizr Masjidi) was a peaceful and enriching experience. Perched on a hill, it offers a sweeping view of Samarkand; an incredible vantage point to admire the city’s blend of history and modern life. The architecture is striking, with its elegant Islamic design, detailed wooden carvings, and vibrant patterns that make the space feel alive with tradition. The mosque carries deep cultural meaning as the final resting place of Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan’s first president, making it not just a spiritual site but also one of national importance. Entry is free, and the atmosphere is calm, welcoming both faithfuls and visitors alike. Historically, the mosque is named after Khizr, the patron saint of travelers, and though it was destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, its 19th-century restoration has preserved its role as a cherished landmark. What stood out most to me was the sense of serenity; the quiet prayers inside, the fresh breeze outside, and the gentle stillness that lingers across the hill. It’s not only a place of history and architecture, but also one of reflection. A must-visit when in Samarkand.

The Hazrat Khizr Mosque in Samarkand is a smaller but deeply meaningful and beautiful site. It’s dedicated to Hazrat Khizr, a revered Islamic figure known for guiding prophets and travelers. The mosque is seen as a palce of protection and blessing. Originally built in the 8th century it has a beautiful domed prayer hall with elegant carved wooden columns and peaceful courtyards. It’s perched on a hill with views over Registan and the city

Hazrat Khizr Mosque is beautifully perched on an elevated point in Samarkand, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city's most iconic landmarks, including the majestic Bibi Khanym Mosque and the historic Registan Square. Entry to the mosque is completely free, making it a must-visit spot for travelers on any budget. The mosque itself is a fine example of Islamic architecture, featuring intricate designs and a peaceful atmosphere ideal for reflection. It’s especially popular among photography enthusiasts, thanks to its scenic location and the stunning backdrop it provides. Whether you're capturing the city skyline or the architectural beauty of the mosque itself, this spot won’t disappoint. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Samarkand – whether you're interested in history, architecture, or just want to soak in a memorable view of the city.

Nestled conveniently between Gul-e-Amir and Registan Square, Cafe Magistr is a delightful spot that perfectly balances local charm with international flair. During my first visit to Samarkand, I found myself returning here multiple times for its diverse menu that caters to both Uzbek cuisine enthusiasts and those craving Western comfort food. The cafe's inviting two-room layout creates a bright atmosphere ideal for students and travelers alike.
We had some amazing food here. And the tropical juice drink was way better than we had expected. The place looks as if it is part of a hotel, very nice and fancy feeling but certainly not unapproachable. Staff were also fast and attentive. Menu in English was available. But only the drinks menu was entirely in cyrillic. Credit card payment was accepted!

This is a great place to stop by during your visit in Samarkand!!! Exceptional service, very good food with so many options (they are considering if you are vegetarian too :)) great choice of coffees and teas!!! Internet and suitable tables if you need to work a little bit. Another room with cute tables for family gatherings. The service is so nice, they even predict what you might need before you think about it ;) This is my favourite place in Samarkand :) thank you!! 😊
Weronika Ż — Google review
The service is very good. That's not the problem. My Dutch stomach was really bad the days after I had a pizza here and it didn't taste like a real pizza. The pasta pesto had no taste of pesto and instead was just very cheesy. The fresh juice and milkshake were great though.
Joris S — Google review
Very conveniently located and well lit place that’s popular with both locals and tourists. Prices are reasonable for such a location. Love the fast service. But here are the reasons for 4 stars and not 5: - the curry chicken is quite tasty but it tastes nothing like good Indian curry! No hint of onions, turmeric or chilli or spices. It tastes more like carbonara sauce, tbh. - the lagman was very ordinary, the noodles were limp and over cooked, cannot compare with the blue blooded lagman shops in Tashkent. The soup was passable, quite delicious and definitely worth an order if you are going for soup and not noodles. Btw, the coffee americano is robust and full of body and kick and worth a try. Apologies for the very honest critique since I come from a country that makes world class curries and noodles. Still, I applaud the effort to be very inclusive in your menu! Kudos! 👍

The extra star is for the wait staff and the vegetarian food options. My wife is a vegetarian and we were having a hard time finding vegetarian option in our trip. But the food here mainly the pizza and the lentil soup were both hot and nourishing A welcome change from the grilled vegetables and rice options. And the staff is super friendly and very very attentive. They welcomed us late into the night with a smile and served us enthusiastically Cafe food so keep expectations accordingly. Also the tea menu is extensive and great on rainy days. Went there twice for lunch and dinner

Update: The food poisoning persisted for 2 weeks, worsening every day. I have seen 4 hospitals from the inside and was urged to be hospitalized for four days. Pretty potent eggplant salad 👍🏼 Kind people that work there and nice atmosphere, but I spent the next 48hrs on the toilet in agony after their eggplant salad. I didn't eat anything else that day but some plain crackers. I've been fulltime traveling for 11 years eating streetfood daily, so I'm pretty resilient, but this my body couldn't handle. Not how I envisioned to spend my time in Samarkand.

Nice local eatery whereby most of the dimmers are the locals themselves. You know it's OK then. Did a quick dinner routine since I have just arrived in Samarkand and this place just provided the right respite from the long road journey from Bukhara. The lagmen soup was brilliant. Good flavours with heaps of vegs and meat. ! Just the type of comfort food I'd expected.

Great place to grab a quick bite to eat. The prices are low. The menu is comprehensive and the people running the service (mostly students) speak English.

Amir Temur Mausoleum Gur-i Amir Complex is a 15th-century mausoleum in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, housing the tombs of Turko-Mongol conqueror Timur and his close relatives. The mausoleum's striking turquoise cupola, glazed bricks, and lavish marble designs make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Uzbekistan. Despite not intending to be buried there, Timur now lies interred alongside his sons and grandson.
The Amir Temur Mausoleum (Gur-e-Amir) is a must-visit site in Samarkand. The architecture is impressive, with its turquoise dome and beautiful tilework that showcase the craftsmanship of the Timurid era. Inside, the mausoleum has a calm and respectful atmosphere, giving visitors a sense of history and the importance of Amir Temur’s legacy. The site is well-preserved, easy to reach, and an essential stop for understanding the cultural and historical heritage of Uzbekistan. Truly recommended for anyone visiting Samarkand.

Gur-e-Amir Tomb (Mausoleum of Amir Temur). The funerary dome of Amir Temur is one of the finest examples of medieval Eastern architecture from the Timurid period. Its construction was initiated by Amir Temur in 1404 and was originally intended for his grandson and heir, Muhammad Sultan, who had died in Iran the previous year. Temur had prepared a crypt for himself in Shakhrisabz, but he died unexpectedly of pneumonia in Kazakhstan during the winter of 1405. Since the mountain passes to Shakhrisabz were blocked by snow, he was buried here, next to his grandson, in what would become known as Gur-e-Amir (The Tomb of the Leader). Later, the tomb became the resting place of other notable figures, including his spiritual advisor Sayyid Baraka, his grandson Ulugh Beg, and his sons Shah Rukh and Miran Shah. With these additions, and the burial of several other relatives, the tomb was transformed into the dynastic mausoleum of the Timurids. The mausoleum stands as a remarkable example of medieval architectural craftsmanship. The Taj Mahal and Humayun’s Mausoleum in Delhi were inspired by this very mausoleum, whose intricately crafted dome —and indeed the entire monument, shaped like a turban— is exquisitely adorned with blue, turquoise, and emerald tiles that captivate the eye.

It’s a cool place, however it’s really full with people. We visited it few times and only on the 3rd attempt (later afternoon ca. 4pm) we decided to go in. Which kinda worked pretty well, as we could also make some nice pics without everyone. The entrance was 75k per person, which we found quite pricy compared to Registan (100k per person) for what you get.

We paid 75,000 soms per person to enter into Complex of The Gur-e Amir or Guri Amir which means tomb of the King. Beautiful on the outside and inside, it is a Persian-style monument, shaped like a turban. It is exquisitely adorned with blue, turquoise, and emerald tiles that captivate the eye. Browsing through inside the complex, you find books, maps, artifacts and signboards which gives an insight into the historical context on the vast empire of Amir Temur. Several handmade souvenirs from ceramics to beautifully crafted woodworks are available in various corners. The Mausoleum is well preserved , has beautiful and artistic golden artwork all around the 9 tombs . The black colored tomb lies the Great Amir Temur. Worth recommending those who is visiting Samarkand to understand Amir Temur's legacy !!!

The Amir Temur Mausoleum, also known as the Gur-i Amir Complex, in Samarkand was a truly unforgettable experience. This historical site is not only the resting place of the great conqueror Amir Temur (Tamerlane) but also a masterpiece of Timurid architecture that reflects the glory of an ancient empire. The magnificent blue dome, which shines beautifully under the sunlight. The intricate tile work, with its stunning patterns of turquoise and gold, is breathtaking and shows the exceptional craftsmanship of the 14th century. The interior decorations are rich with marble, onyx, and golden inscriptions, creating a sense of both power and peace. It’s not just a tomb but a symbol of Uzbekistan’s rich cultural heritage. Walking through the site, I could feel the deep respect that locals have for Amir Temur, who played a key role in shaping Central Asian history. The Gur-i Amir Complex is also surrounded by peaceful gardens and other historic buildings, making it a perfect place for reflection and photography. I highly recommend visiting it at sunset, when the golden light enhances the beauty of the blue dome. the Amir Temur Mausoleum is a must-visit landmark in Samarkand, offering both historical insight and architectural splendor. It’s a place where the past truly comes alive.

Resting place of Amir Timur. This has intricate ornate decorative artworks. Absolutely magnificent and astounding, how much work went in to beautify the place. Recommend to come here early, around 8 am to enjoy the grounds in peace before hordes of touristS flocks the place. When we visited the place in 2025 summer, the card machine was not working so we had to use cash to buy tickets. Something to keep in mind while you are in Uzbekistan.

Truly a must-visit for anyone exploring Uzbekistan and the ancient Silk Road! 💙 #Samarkand #GurEAmir #AmirTemur #UzbekistanTravel #SilkRoadJourney

Amir Temur also known as Tamerlane, was a Turco-Mongol conqueror who ruled much of Central Asia. He was a brilliant military strategist and a patron of arts and architecture. Temur united various tribes and is remembered for his architectural legacy. He also built Registan square in Samarkand, which is a complex of 3 maddrassas (colleges). Temur was the only ruler who defeated Ottoman in Ankara & captured Sultan. His mausoleum is a beautiful piece of architecture. In my opinion it should not have ticket for tourists.

The Ulugh Beg Madrasa, also known as Ulugbek Madrasah, is a historic educational institution located in Registan Square in Samarkand. Built between 1417 and 1430 by Ulugh Beg, the grandson of Amir Timur, it is the oldest surviving piece of architecture in the square. Unlike traditional madrasas, this center of learning focused on mathematics, philosophy, theology, and astronomy due to Ulugh Beg's interests.
This magnificent structure was built between 1417 and 1421 by the then-Timurid governor of Samarkand, Ulugh Beg, Timur Lenk's grandson and prominent astronomer. Some of the most outstanding scholars of their time, both religious and secular, learned in this arhitectural gem. Just beeing here and seeing this was a blessing!

Ulugh Beg Madrasah is one of the most historical madrasah in Samarkand Uzbekistan, part of the Islamic history as a muslim educational institution. This amazing and fascinating madrasah located in a complex of Registan square along with the other two madrasah. This madrasah is the oldest among three madrasah in a complex But the condition still good and well preserved. You can enter the madrasah and see so many souvenir stall. One of the most iconic site in town, worth to visit anyways.

The oldest of the great Registan buildings is the Ulugh Beg Madrasa from 1417-1420. Ulugh Beg, the grandson of Tamerlane, was a man who wanted to promote science and had many buildings built for this purpose. Here in Samarkand he had an observatory and this Koranic school built. The "stars" on the iwan (or pishtaq) refer to the fact that Ulugh Beg was also an astronomer. This beautifully decorated building is a pleasure to visit.

Ulugh Beg Madrasa is one of the three iconic madrasas that make up the majestic Registan Square in Samarkand — the heart of the city's architectural and cultural glory. The three madrasas here are: Ulugh Beg Madrasa Tilla-Kari Madrasa Sherdor Madrasa The entry ticket for Registan Square, covering all three madrasas, is 150,000 UZS for foreigners. Among them, Ulugh Beg Madrasa stands out as the oldest and most historically significant. Built in the 15th century by the famous astronomer and ruler Ulugh Beg, this madrasa was once a major center of learning in Central Asia. The entrance of the madrasa is grand and imposing, reflecting Timurid architectural finesse. However, time has taken its toll — parts of the facade and interior show signs of aging and lack of maintenance, which slightly dulls its visual appeal. Inside, there's a small museum section showcasing exhibits on the madrasa’s educational role, its curriculum, and its contributions to Islamic science and astronomy. These displays offer a glimpse into the scholarly past of Samarkand. Despite the wear and tear, Ulugh Beg Madrasa remains one of the most famous and historically rich sites in Uzbekistan. Visiting it gives a sense of the city's deep intellectual and cultural roots.

Here is a short info about it. It is magical and the most well organized one. The Ulugh Beg Madrasa (Uzbek: Ulugʻbek madrasasi) is a madrasa (Islamic school) in the historic center of Samarkand, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uzbekistan.[1] Together with other monuments, it forms the monumental ensemble of Registan, the old heart of the city.[2] It was built between 1417 and 1421 by the then-Timurid governor of Samarkand, Ulugh Beg, Timur's grandson and prominent astronomer, who was later emperor between 1447 and 1449. It definately a must see monument.

Green Bear Bar is a fantastic restaurant situated on Pub Street in Samarkand, offering a delightful experience for visitors. The establishment serves local craft beer, including the popular Pulsar's draft beer, which is well-chilled and delicious. The menu features delectable dishes such as the Greed Salad, and the staff is known for their exceptional friendliness and hospitality. The interior of the restaurant exudes style and comfort, creating a welcoming atmosphere for patrons.
A wonderful restaurant located on Pub Street in Samarkand. You can enjoy the local Samarkand craft beer, Pulsar's draft beer. It was well-chilled and very delicious. Since I went alone, I only had two dishes, but the Greed Salad was particularly tasty. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, and the interior of the restaurant was stylish and comfortable. The prices were very reasonable, and the billing process was transparent. I highly recommend this restaurant.

The craft beer was the best I had in Samarkand. The "PULSAR" in particular was extremely fresh and mellow. this beer can tell it comes directly from the factory next door. There was live piano and accordion music around 8pm. The British-inspired design and villa-like atmosphere made for a moody space.

A bar/restaurant in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Decent beer and food options, and prices were great. Staff were attentive and spoke pretty good English, which made my life easier. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, and the AC kept indoor temperatures comfortable.

I loved this bar! There’s some great decor and large tables inside and the staff behind the bar are genuinely helpful in finding a drink from the large range which is suitable. Sitting outside is a delight though, with comfortable seating and table sizes suited to any group size. In the evening some music provided a great atmosphere but even during the day the relaxing vibe is great. The waiting staff were attentive and quick throughout my visit. The drinks menu lists a few bar snacks but there is a separate a full food menu on offer. The selection of food is very wide, from small plates to very large barbecued platters. The mini khachapuri were the perfect starter and so tasty, despite the egg not being runny. And the lamb chops for main were some of the best I’ve ever had - cooked perfectly and while not the largest, five made up for it! Presentation of all the dishes was super and the value for money incredible. Well worth taking a detour to check this place out and one of the highlights of my time in the city!

Blues Bar is a small but cool and casual spot with a great atmosphere. The menu is in Russian, and the staff are helpful. It's a cozy place to relax, enjoy good food, and have quality drinks. The bar offers a temporary escape to a Western-style setting with great music and ambiance. Despite some construction works nearby, it's definitely worth visiting for its winter terrace, attentive staff, and good drink options.
I recently visited Blues Bar in Samarkand, curious to see what this modern establishment had to offer in the heart of this ancient city. The ambiance was relaxed and inviting, perfect for a quiet drink. While I didn’t delve into the food menu, the bar itself was a refreshing change of pace from the traditional tourist spots. The soft lighting, comfortable seating, and chilled-out music created a cozy atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a day of exploring. If you're looking for a contemporary escape in Samarkand, Blues Bar is worth checking out.

Blues Bar is a fantastic spot for a fun evening! The cocktail menu is spot-on — tasty, creative, and pleasantly affordable. Huge shoutout to bartender Nikita for lifting the spirits (both literally and figuratively!) with amazing cocktails and great vibes all night. The place has a cool, relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer. The only hiccup: smoking is allowed inside, and especially in the restroom, the smoke hangs so thick you might need a compass to find your way out! But all jokes aside, it’s a great bar where you can enjoy delicious drinks and a lively mood. Definitely worth a visit!

A fun and original spot in Samarkand. The atmosphere is unique for the city and it’s a good place to enjoy music and have a beer with friends. However, the service was disappointing — the waiter seemed indifferent and disengaged. If you’re looking for a casual evening with decent vibes, this works. But if you expect warm service and a well-made sparkling gin and tonic, this probably isn’t the right place.
Bernina N — Google review
We had a blonde girl who served us who was helpful. This place generally has a nice atmosphere sitting outside and blankets to keep warm. One person was incredibly drunk to the point of not being able to walk and you have to question how staff had let him get that way, only interfering when he collapsed on a bench, preventing a table being used. Aside from that there was no bother. Only one toilet seems to be available
K — Google review
Very disappointing experience. Wherever I sat, the staff kept saying the tables were “reserved,” even though many were empty. When I finally sat near the terrace, they said it was also reserved and only the bar was open. No one offered me a menu or any help, and the staff seemed uninterested in serving solo guests. Definitely not recommended for travelers looking for good service in Samarkand.
I Z — Google review
The bar is apparently split into two locations (?) and the one shown in most of the photos isn't open until 7pm. The one I was at didn't have any draft beer and only 3 types of bottled beer available. The third beer I ordered came at room temperature but they willingly provided me with ice. The mushroom soup was good and the quesadilla was fine, but a bit bland. I would NOT recommend the nachos with guacamole. First, the chips are not plain tortilla chips, but flavored. Second, I don't know what the "guacamole" is made out of, but it 100% is not avocado. The taste and texture made that abundantly clear. The restaurant also has no chill whatsoever and charged me 12Ksom for lemon that I requested to try to fix up the "guacamole" a bit. The service was quick and friendly and mostly in English.

Bochka is a laid-back Pivo-Bar that prides itself on its beer selection. The entrance, which involves passing through a large beer keg, sets the tone for the beer-centric experience. Inside, the rustic wooden decor creates an atmosphere reminiscent of being inside a massive beer barrel. The bar offers a good variety of draft and bottled beers at reasonable prices, including a tasty dark option.
There’s an interesting bar called “Bochka”, designed to look like an actual bochka means barrel. We went there just before sunset, and it was quiet. Draft beer was 15,000 UZS. There was no English menu, but you could choose snacks from the fridge. The atmosphere was unique, and the interior design was quite special—it can be a fun experience. Each table seats a maximum of six people, no more than that.
Matin D — Google review
It's called the barrel because, erm, it's all wooden inside? not sure about barrel, more like something from the wild west, but the little booths actually work and it's a surprisingly nice little bar. Beer range is the usual Pulsar stuff, maybe a couple more than most of the other bars.

⚠️ BEWARE ⚠️ ask for prices upfront and be careful not to fall for the 'free' snacks they bring - you're charged for it all in the bill. Beers are brought before you even finish your current one, even if not asked for. All basic tourist scamming stuff but the sausage were tasty. 2 people, 4 beers (2 of which we didn't order) 508,000som. I'm surprised they don't charge you for the air you breathe. The manager couldn't even hide his smirk as we paid. Even the tastiest of sausages won't get rid of the bitter taste in your mouth as you leave.

Good selection of beers on draft and in bottles (including a tasty dark). Prices were very reasonable. Loved the traditional pub design and atmosphere- the only one of it's kind we found in 2 weeks travelling Uzbekistan. Locals and staff were friendly and welcoming despite the language barrier! There was no menu, but a selection of sausages and meat kebabs were available at the chiller counter for you to choose and have grilled. Everything was pretty tasty and very well priced. Definitely recommend- we visited a few times during our stay in Samarkand.

One of the best bars on the street. Miscommunication incident when we arrived. The guy tried to tell us the bar was full and turn us away even though there was nobody there. Turned out it was just the outside which is reserved mainly for locals. The real atmosphere inside. The bar man doesn’t smile at all and but the rest of the staff are friendly, chatty and welcoming. Draft beer choice was limited - only 3 available. Still a good overall experience.

The Observatory of Ulugbek, located in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is a significant historical site built in the 15th century by the renowned astronomer and mathematician Ulugbek. Perched atop Kuhi Rasad hill, it served as a hub for astronomical research and education during its time. With advanced instruments such as a sextant and quadrant, Ulugbek and his team meticulously observed stars, constellations, and planets for over a decade.
Damn I burned lots of cash in buying tickets in Samarkand. For small places the tickets should be cheaper. For tourist, ticket prices are 4 times higher. 75000 som per person for observatory & museum. Anyway it was a good visit. Good to know about the history of a Muslim astronomer Mirza Ulugbek, acknowledged worldwide later in 15th, 16th & 18th century by various western institutions. Mirza also had a madrassa (college) which is the building on the left in Registan sqaure. Mirza Ulug bag documented approx 1900 stars using his observatory. A great achievement in his era.
Waseem — Google review
There are two parts to the visit: the small museum and the underground arc instrument. Both are worth seeing and give a great glimpse into the history of astronomy in Samarkand. The entrance fee was 150,000 UZS for two people and included access to both sections. It took us around 30 minutes to see everything. Short but definitely worth it if you’re interested in science or history!
Angelica R — Google review
I visited Ulugbek’s Observatory in Samarkand with high hopes; after all, this place is legendary. Built in the 1420s under the Timurid astronomer-prince Ulugh Beg, it was once one of the world’s great observatories, famed for its huge sextant (or quadrant), star catalogues, and the work of scholars like Al-Kashi and Ali Qushji. Today, what remains is impressive but limited. Much of the original instruments are gone, the marble arc trench (part of the giant quadrant) is visible underground, and a modest museum stands beside the site with some replicas, panels, and stories about Ulugh Beg’s scientific achievements. Entrance fee was 75,000 soms, which felt steep considering how little is preserved and how much you’ll either need to imagine or know in advance to appreciate. Without a guide, a lot of context is lost though i wouldn't recommend going with a guide, so going early morning helps; fewer crowds, better lighting, more peace to soak it in. Still, for history lovers or anyone curious, it’s worth seeing. The view, the sense that you’re standing where great minds once calculated the stars; it has power. If you like science, history, or just striking old ruins, I’d recommend stopping by; but go in with realistic expectations.
Anthony J — Google review
A very historical place but only a few artifacts remains of the old days. The place is small, on one end is the quadrant that was used to measure the position of the heavenly bodies and the other end is a small museum with some artifacts and history. They also have a big statue of Mirza Ulugh Beg on the side. The best time to visit is probably in the morning when there is less traffic.
Taniyyus S — Google review
When Europe was in the dark ages and the science was surpresed by chatolic church, Ulugbek and his colleagues were progressive and open minded. Museum is small but a good insight in to all the findings.
Jure Š — Google review
Visiting the Ulugh Beg Observatory in Samarkand was one of the most memorable parts of my trip. As I walked up to the site, I was immediately struck by how ahead of its time this place must have been in the 15th century. Knowing that Ulugh Beg, a ruler and scholar, built this observatory purely out of his passion for astronomy made the visit feel even more special. The massive stone sextant, partially buried beneath the ground, was incredible to see up close. The small museum on site provided excellent insights into Ulugh Beg’s contributions to astronomy and mathematics, showcasing ancient instruments and manuscripts. The peaceful surroundings and panoramic views of Samarkand added to the charm. It was a brief yet enriching stop that brought together science, history, and cultural pride in one unique place.
Erwin B — Google review
Total scam if you are a foreigner. Entry price is 75,000 and is clearly not worth it. The museum is a small circular room which takes a maximum of 5 minutes to fully see and read. Also, no English guide on site. There's also a mausoleum, 15sec and you're done. The blatant definition of a tourist trap. I DON'T RECOMMEND
Danny Q — Google review

Rukhobod Mausoleum, located near the Ruhabad Mosque in Samarkand, is an artisan center with around 15-20 charming shops within its courtyard. Built in 1380 and recently renovated, it is one of the oldest mausoleums in the city. While not the grandest, it holds a collection of Islamic manuscripts and relics, offering a serene blend of history and spirituality.
The Rukhabad Mausoleum is located a short distance from the Guri Amir mausoleum of the Turkic conqueror Timur (also known as Tamerlane) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan The mausoleum was built by Amir Timur in 1380, over the grave of Sheikh Burhaneddin Sagaradzhi, an Islamic figure who was highly venerated during the time of Timur. The mausoleum is very well-maintained and contains the tombs of Sheikh Burhaneddin Sagaradzhi and many other figures. There is no admission cost, and there are a few merchants in the complex in addition to a tourist office. There’s also a mosque nearby where worshippers are able to pray. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the city.

Very nice building and a peaceful place to be. There’s no entrance fee, so you can just walk around this place and have a sit and observe the surroundings.

The Rukhobod Mausoleum, also known as the Ruhobod Complex (as mentioned at the gate), is a historical site located within a spacious and peaceful park. While Google refers to it as "Rukhobod Mausoleum," the entrance sign reads "Ruhobod Complex" — both names refer to the same place. This site is essentially a tomb housing several graves inside the main building. The complex also includes a small mosque, a garden, a fountain, and lush greenery, making it a calm and serene area to explore. Entry is free, and the location is conveniently close to the famous Amir Temur Mausoleum, making it easy to visit both in one trip. If you're exploring Samarkand’s historical and spiritual landmarks, this is a nice and quiet stop worth including on your list.

We visited Samarkand in September, and the weather was simply perfect. One day, we decided to walk along the boulevard, and we crossed the park until we reached Emir Timur monument. From there, we saw Rukhobod Mausoleum, and we continued our walk enjoying the beautiful weather and the clean & fresh air. PS: keep your phone ready to take great shots.
Roger M — Google review
The mausoleum was peaceful and bright. It was nice to sit and just relax and take in the moment. The building is simple but has beautiful fine detail if you look for it.
Sean S — Google review
No charge to enter but largely undecorated interior and exterior. Only worth a visit if you have a special interest in Rukhobod the man.

This building is on the way from registan to gul emir, so easy to drop by.

A very routine mausoleum no need to pay for entrance all you need to see is outside

Nestled in a quiet corner just a short stroll from Shah Zinda, the Gumbaz Synagogue was constructed in 1891 to cater to Samarkand's Jewish community. With only around 50 Jews remaining in the city today, there are no fixed days for the minyan ceremony. The synagogue's intimate space features a striking domed hall with an exquisite ceiling. Despite its modest size, visitors are warmly welcomed by the caretaker who graciously offers guided tours of the premises.
It was an absolute pleasure to visit the Gumbaz synagogue in Samarkhand. The synagogue was established in the 1890s and currently as a congregation of about 100 members. The rabbi who resides in the property was kind enough to show me the prayer hall and adjacent buildings. Everything is meticulously maintained from the 1890s. Many visitors from America, Canada, France and Israel come to visit this historic synagogue, which is located, a short walk from the historic Bibi Khanym mosque. Well worth the visit if you are in the city!

A bit off from the tourist area. It is a nice place to visit. Just the rabbi or man who opened the door for me was asking 20000 at the end.
François L — Google review
We'd really have loved visiting the synagogue which was unfortunately closed. The mentioned opening hours are likely the times the rabi can be reached by phone and might come to open the synagogue. We didn't manage to get inside. I saw the pictures other travelers have posted and would really have liked to see the place. The outside is not appealing to the eye but respect to the members of the Jewish community. There are only a few synagogues and churches left to my knowledge in Usbekistan.
Christoph — Google review
A small but such an intimate and serene synagogue. The people who received us have such an interesting story to tell about the history and present of Jewish culture in central Asia. Very knowledgeable, warm and kind people. Truly a hidden gem of Samarkand. I recommend leaving a kimd donation for their time and building upkeep.

Rabbi Joseph and his wife Tamara was very friendly. They let me go inside the synagogue.

Great way to learn about the (small) Jewish community in Samarkand. If the door seems locked, you can just push a little firmer and it will open. While the rabbi explains everything quite well, it is sad to see that police have to guard the entrance. Be prepared to be asked for a donation of 50,000 S'um.

The Museum of Regional Studies, located in a prestigious area with charming two-story houses and upscale shops, is housed in the former residence of a prominent Jewish merchant. The museum features restored front hall interiors and offers explanations in English. It boasts traditional ceramic collections from Uzbekistan as well as extensive information on the history of Jews in Samarkand, including old photographs. Visitors can explore two sections dedicated to Jewish history and ancient artifacts, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in regional culture and heritage.
This is a quaint yet extremely informative museum off the beaten tourist track. It shares the old mansion/building with the Jewish Museum. I strongly recommend visiting this jewel of Samarkand history museum. I go back every visit to Samarkand and find some amazing detail I missed before.
Ev M — Google review
You could easily miss this charming and informative museum. It contains many of the original artefacts of Samarkand. Also, many objects from people's everyday lives - some dating back to prehistorical times that should be more represented in history. Needs some investment or maybe should remain a well kept secret?

(Translated by Google) A bad experience! At the entrance I ask for a ticket (in English), the lady speaks little English but shows me that it is 35,000 SOM but says "no photo", then shows me 85,000 and says "photo". I say ok, no photo then she thinks and shows me 60000 and says "photo"! I pay 60,000 and I go to visit, she doesn't give me a ticket. I go to the historical part of the museum (small and not very interesting) then to the Jewish history wing where the room is superb. Another woman comes who doesn't speak English and asks for 85,000... fortunately with an automatic translator, I manage to explain that I paid at the entrance and wonder why that makes a difference, for her I hadn't paid... afterward 5 minutes she understands and I left because I no longer want to stay. I felt treated like a thief. Their organization sucks, definitely someone didn't do their job well. (Original) Une mauvaise expérience ! Alt Stadt Restaurant is a charming spot in Samarkand, perfect for enjoying warm summer evenings with an unfiltered weissbier on its terrace. The real highlight here is the craft beer selection, brewed on-site and offering a diverse range of local brews. The outdoor setting provides a picturesque backdrop, and the attentive staff promptly accommodates seating preferences. While the menu boasts a fusion of local flavors, the standout feature is definitely their craft beer.
We read previous reviews, so decided not to eat and just have beers. The staff were friendly and the outside area was nice and relaxed. They have lots of good looking grilled meats outside. The beer was good, not great, but good and very cheap.

Charming atmosphere for any occasion. The real standout, however, is their craft beer, brewed on-site, offering a diverse range of local brews. My recent visit to Alt Stadt was a memorable experience. The outdoor setting provided a picturesque backdrop, and the attentive staff promptly accommodated our seating preference. The menu boasted a fusion of local flavors, and the recommendations from our server were spot-on. The real highlight was the craft beer selection. From hoppy blends to smoother malt varieties, each sip was a journey through Samarkand's brewing expertise. The staff's knowledge of the brewing process added an extra layer of enjoyment to our evening. Whether you're a craft beer enthusiast or someone looking for a unique dining experience. The combination of delicious cuisine, refreshing craft beers, and a warm atmosphere make it a standout choice in Samarkand

The Bibi-Khanym Mausoleum is a historic landmark in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It contains the tombs of five poets, including the celebrated Sufi mystic Bibi Khanum. The mausoleum was restored in 2007 but is still small and less decorated than other Samarkand sights.
The Bibi Khanym is a historic mausoleum located directly opposite the Bibi Khanym mosque in Samarkhand. The world famous Registan is also located very nearby. Admission is approximately 50,000 UZ Som. There are numerous cafés and souvenir shops located directly outside. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

It’s grand and magnificent, decorated with stunning blue tiles, and located next to the bazaar. You can easily access this complex along the pedestrian walkway from Registan Square. Entrance fee for tourists: 50,000 UZS.
Matin D — Google review
Bibi Khanym Mausoleum is located directly opposite the grand Bibi Khanym Mosque in Samarkand. This mausoleum is a relatively small structure but stands out with its beautiful blue dome, typical of Timurid architecture. Despite its modest size, the mausoleum holds historical significance and offers a glimpse into the architectural legacy of the era. However, the entry fee of 75,000 UZS seems quite high considering the size and limited access inside. It’s worth noting that all the major attractions, including Registan Square, Shah-i-Zinda, and Siab Bazaar, are located within walking distance. So if you’re already exploring central Samarkand, a quick visit to the Bibi Khanym Mausoleum can be added to your itinerary.

The Hotel Billuri Sitora is a great and recently renovated hotel in the heart of Samarkand. It's walking distance to most of the main sights, and the room is spacious, modern and clean. The pool is also a nice bonus.
We stayed 4 nights at this fabulous family run hotel and wish we could have stayed more. We loved our stay. The owner and his family were extremely welcoming and went out of their way to help us in anyway they could. The owner speaks perfect English and gave us great advice on how to spend our time in not only Samarkand but also Tashkent. The air conditioning rooms were excellent, spacious with the most comfortable bed to sleep in! Breakfast was delicious and the perfect start to your day. The location was good with places to eat close by and only a short taxi ride to the main tourist attractions. We would highly recommend this hotel if visiting Samarkand and recommend you contact the owner regarding bookings rather than an agency, his quote is much more reasonable!

I had an excellent stay at this hotel and everything was absolutely spot on. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, making it very easy to relax. The staff were extremely professional, friendly, and always ready to help with a smile. Location was perfect, with easy access to the main attractions and transport. The breakfast options were fresh and satisfying. Check-in and check-out were quick and hassle-free. Overall, a wonderful experience that exceeded expectations I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

Perfect location! Samarkand is a safe and very walkable city, and the Billuri Sitora is perfectly situated in the heart of it all. It’s got old time flare with modern amenities and has the feel of a real family operation. The best part is, when you’re here you feel like part of the family. Great value, great courtyard and a quietly setback location. Wouldn’t have wanted to stay anywhere else. If I have one negative, it’s the breakfast. It’s only served from 7:30-9:00 and isn’t worth getting up for.

Wonderful Stay – Highly Recommended! I had a fantastic stay at this hotel. The hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming, and I was even allowed to check in early, which was a big plus. The breakfast was beautifully arranged and delicious – especially the melons, which were absolutely amazing! The pool provided a perfect way to cool off during the day, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

My stay with my 3 international friends was wonderful! Homemade breakfasts, easy walkability to the nearby bazaar and historical sites, quiet and elevated accommodations all contributed to a great stay. Importantly, the hotel manager went above & beyond to keep us informed about local activities, helped with all our taxis, and any questions we had about Samarkand. Us 4 couldn’t be more satisfied and grateful!

Recently stayed here in Room 124. The room carpet was torn and the door to the room did not allow for privacy as it had frosted glass panels in it. Room was also right next to smoking chairs. Perhaps owners could install a blind or curtain over the room door to allow for privacy. Housekeeping did not provide water on the second day of my stay. Hotel is not close to any sites. Breakfast buffet was delicious and bountiful. Would not stay here again.

Sam Craft Pub is a popular spot in Samarkand known for its friendly atmosphere and selection of craft beers. It stands out as the only place in the area offering quality craft beer, sourced from local breweries in Samarkand and Tashkent. The bar's English-speaking staff adds to its appeal, making it a welcoming destination for both locals and tourists.
Great selection of beers for very reasonable prices! And while they have a short menu for food options (which is totally understandable as it is supposed to be a pub and not a restaurant), the odd mix of food from different cultures makes it possible to have something for (almost) anyone. Service is very friendly and respectful. And the atmosphere is also very laid back; so much so that, there were a few groups playing cards while drinking, and I was pleasantly surprised by how everyone was enjoying their time!

I am awaring food stars to music selection - with that I would like to start off my review of this fantast place! Great rock songs the best decades and we still were able to chat casually. The beer is flawless! Especially helles, new england IPA and weissbier tasted amazing. There is plenty of room, prices are fine and we are already sad to be leaving, back home where such bars died out :( all the best to you!
Kirdneh H — Google review
One of if not the best bar in Samarkand, they got a huge selection of beers on the tab, all locally brewed and they also offer many delicious cocktails. The staff is really nice and the music is on point to really create that pub vibe. The only thing they could improve on is the interior which is a bit bland, its therefore better to sit outside. If you want to enjoy a nice beer/cocktail in Samarkand, go here!
Julien W — Google review
Not only did I not expect to find craft beer in Samarkand but I did not expect it to be good. They didn’t have everything that was on the beer menu but they served up a full-bodied stout that was perfect for a chilly rainy night in one of the oldest cities on Earth. Great dumplings too! Maybe update the musical selection a bit…?

Sam Craft PUB in Samarkand is an absolute gem if you’re looking for a relaxed, fun atmosphere with great drinks and good vibes. Tucked away just enough to feel like a local secret, it’s the kind of place you instantly feel comfortable in—welcoming, laid-back, and easygoing. The beer selection is excellent, with a mix of local craft brews and some imported favorites. Everything is served cold and fresh, and the staff are friendly and helpful if you’re not sure what to try. The food pairs really well too—simple pub fare like wings, burgers, and snacks that hit the spot without trying too hard. What really makes Sam Craft stand out is the chill vibe. Whether you're there with friends or just stopping by for a quiet drink, the space feels cozy and unpretentious. Music is usually on point, and there’s a good mix of locals and travelers, which gives it a nice, lively energy without being overwhelming. Overall, it's a solid 5-star experience. Great drinks, friendly people, and a cool atmosphere make it a go-to spot in Samarkand. Perfect for a casual evening out or just kicking back after a long day of sightseeing.

The first really tasty beer I met in Uzbekistan so far! Price is not cheap, 35k to 50k som for a pint, but it definitely worths it. The food is somehow basic, but very tasty. And price is reasonable considering the location, eg. 25k som for one skewer of chicken shashlik. The owner, who is probably Russian, is friendly and speaks also very good English. Service is sometimes slow and there's only one toilet for the whole pub.

PS- this photo is in front of the Beer Shop which is around the corner from the actual pub.

They have a large menu, but we didn't want to eat - we just had beers, which were good and very cheap. The atmosphere was a little odd, maybe because we are foreigners, but we didn't feel super welcome. Also, no wifi

I love this place. We went there three times during our stay. It's hidden on the side of "pub street" by the side entrance to the beautiful Dinamo stadium. They make really good (and cheap!) steak. It was rather well done every time but taste-wise it's excellent. They also serve beer fresh from nearby brewery.

Excellent place! Open air, great food and beer on tap, with choice of filtered and unfiltered, difference being additives for shelf life. Loved the fountain and also child friendly! We all loved it 😍

The trees, greenery, bridges, and streetlights all bring to mind the image of a small town. What's special about this restaurant is that you can eat a whole piece of meat, such as lamb or T-bone. There seemed to be only two types of beer available: filtered and unfiltered. The unfiltered version had a less unpleasant taste.

Amazing steak! High quality, nice and rare, ate it to the bone. Ask for steak with less salt than the usual. Nice atmosphere and service. The cocktails were less successful 😅 drink beer.

Very good steaks with reasonable prices.

Cheap and very high quality, waiters are a little grumpy, but from a European perspective it’s definitely price/quality

When exploring the vibrant bazaars of Uzbekistan, you can't miss the iconic sight of fridge magnets showcasing Plov, a dish that embodies the country's culinary heritage. This beloved national dish is typically enjoyed during lunch and features a mound of rice glistening with oil, complemented by tender meat, carrots, and sometimes even egg. Each region boasts its own unique twist on this hearty meal, making it a comforting staple for locals who often claim their mother's recipe as the best.

Perched on the 20th floor of the Hilton Samarkand Regency, Bar "Sky" offers an unforgettable experience with its stunning views over a man-made canal. This elevated oasis is perfect for enjoying dinner and cocktails late into the night, as it remains open until 2 a.m., allowing guests to soak in the enchanting nighttime scenery. The bar features both indoor seating and an inviting terrace where you can relax while sipping your favorite drinks.
Nice bar on the top floor with great view. You can seat inside and outside on a terrace. Friendly and professional staff, thank you! Food is good. The bar tried to serve international, not always authentical thought. But thank you for the effort.
