81301 Coffee House and Roasters is a beloved local spot situated on Main Avenue in Durango. They are dedicated to crafting exceptional coffee, sourcing premium beans from around the world and roasting them in-house. Their seasonal menu features unique offerings like Tanzanian Peaberry and Papua New Guinea Sigri, showcasing their commitment to quality and variety. Customers praise the welcoming atmosphere and friendly service provided by the staff.
We greatly enjoyed our visit to 81301! I tried a vanilla latte and it was delicious. The shop itself was very nice with a good amount of seating, and the staff were very friendly. We also got pastries from the adjoining shop, and they were amazing. I would recommend 81301 Coffee House to anyone looking for a good latte in Durango!
Allyson M — Google review
The drinks were good! Not the best I’ve had, but definitely worth a visit. The only issue I had was the attitude that was given when I asked about a straw for my iced drink. Fyi they don’t have them.
Larissa M — Google review
LOVE LOVE LOVE this coffee shop. First, the people are excellent, always greeted with a smile! Second, the coffee is excellent. Love their selection of their coffee beans too! Take a bag home, promise you won’t be disappointed. Then, there is a pastry shop right next door..and ohhhh are they just so so freaking good! This is how you have your coffee in Durango. Did I mention the views?!? Just come on by and see for yourself.
Chelsey C — Google review
Traveling the US via local coffee shops and this place did not disappoint. Had the best reviews from local coffee drinkers on Reddit. Reviews were accurate! Kind staff & coffee was amazing! Had great local low key vibes - and you can tell they have a dedicated local customer base. We collect stickers from all the places we go to and they had sweet knuckle tattoo coffee shop sticker. A great addition to our collection with a bit of attitude!
Lauren C — Google review
The coffee shop is amazing. They roast beans also. Bakery next door. Within walking distance for us. Kai made an excellent latte. Highly recommend
Chris H — Google review
Welcoming experience and environment. Ryan and Matt provided exceptional service. My husband and I are coffee lovers and enjoy local roasters. It was awesome to talk about coffee. We purchased the Columbia Nariño to have at home. I had a vanilla latte and it was the best latte I’ve had in a while. My husband ordered a pour over (Ethiopia) and it was delicious! Ryan made his pour over and it was done very well. This will definitely be our coffee spot moving forward when we visit Durango. Great conversation, love of coffee, welcoming environment; we know people who value coffee & the coffee experience when we see it! I highly recommend stopping by 81301 Coffee House and Roasters whether passing through, staying for vacation, or if you’re local! Thanks again Ryan and Matt.

I've been wandering through CO for 1.5 weeks now and this is the first time I've had truly poor service. The 2 employees were unfriendly and one was outright rude. At least the iced latte was pretty good.
Jeff B — Google review
Great selection of drinks at reasonable prices. The location off the main road makes it easy to get to, plus there is adequate parking. I had an iced chai that was probably the best I've ever had. Great customer service. We'll be sure to come back whenever we visit Durango!

Durango Joes Coffee is a beloved local chain that has expanded to 11 locations across Durango, Aztec, and Farmington since its inception in 2004 by a couple passionate about serving exceptional coffee. Known for their classic and signature espresso drinks, the café also offers an array of baked goods, breakfast items, and sandwiches. Locals flock to Durango Joes for their morning caffeine fix—be sure to grab a pastry or breakfast burrito while you're there!
From someone that came from out of town. I am so sad we do not have a Durango Joes where we live! From the food to the customer service it was all a 5/5. Their prices were good for the food and drinks (compared to popular brands like Starbucks and Dutch Bros). Our go too’s was the Mudslide, Hot chocolate, their breakfast sandwich and burritos. We waited no more than 5 minutes for our food and our drinks, which is faster than expected for most coffee places. The inside of this location seemed cleanly. From their tables to their bathrooms, we had no issues! I would highly recommend any out of town guests to try Durango joes for your breakfast and coffee needs! If you live by a location, I am jealous!
Melanie M — Google review
Can't say enough good about this local treasure. The staff was kind warm and helpful. Of course the coffee was great. Plenty of room to get the day started as well.
Kurt G — Google review
Probably one of the worst coffee places I’ve ever been- very confused at to how anyone likes it ( but I guess people like Starbucks too……) Pouring out my $8 coffee and crying cuz it’s so terrible!!! Next time I need a coffee in Durango I’ll just heat up a cup of water from the river - similar quality I’d say.
A A — Google review
Used to live in Durango and came back recently. Durango Joes used to have these awesome breakfast burritos that were quality and hearty. Not anymore. The coffee is fine but basically a local version of Starbucks. The burritos are anemic and sad. I would recommend you cruise on over to Durango Coffee Company instead.
Matthew C — Google review
Cool store, cool staff, great coffee. When you’re driving 12 hours from out of state, sometimes you just gotta draw the line at having some of the best coffee and this place nails it.
John F — Google review
Beautiful, clean coffee shop. The staff is incredibly nice, and the bathrooms are immaculate. The only flaw is its very slow wifi internet. Overall though, I definitely would go back.
David C — Google review
The people were really friendly but the coffee was ok. Our lattes were very sweet
Astacia B — Google review
Very disappointed. Staff was friendly but white mochas we ordered were very underwhelming. We had couple sips and ended up throwing it away. Such a waste for expensive coffees.

The Smiley Cafe is a unique spot in Durango, Colorado, housed in a former junior high school and sharing space with an art collective. The cafe features a spacious and inviting seating area with couches and tables, making it popular among local college students for studying or catching up after yoga classes. The ArtRoom Collective within the Smiley Building showcases various talented artists working in painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture.
Remarkable cafe with more than fair prices. Good and drinks were great. Located in an incredible reimagined high school. Friendly and helpful staff. Uplifting! Parking on the street
Matt Z — Google review
The appropriately named Smiley Cafe will bring a smile to your face. The atmosphere is welcoming and perfect for studying, work, and chats with friends. I had the most delicious Chai Boba! I also had a delightful connection with the cafe staff and the cafe owner, Grant. You can tell the business is run by more than caffeine and profit, there is a kindness and thoughtfulness in every pour and every smile.
Deirdre S — Google review
If I lived in Durango, way too much of my money would go to this establishment. Tons of options for coffee and food and baked goods, and lots of gluten free options. Cute cafe located inside of a school. Lots of seating options and very welcoming. A must try for coffee in the area!
Rachael N — Google review
The Smiley Café is always a great place to relax and unwind, meet friends, work remotely, or just have a nice cup of ancho chili mocha coffee or homemade chai. I am cozy here this morning, sipping this coffee, enjoying the art, the music, and the peaceful vibe it always emits.
Barbara G — Google review
SUPER cool location, best part. great lighting, calm music with comfy furniture and open isolated spaces upstairs. the lady who took our order, was not very friendly.. not welcoming - first impressions matter! the menu was very diverse with drinks and flavors, boba options were super cool but didn’t try. I got a Carmel latte, super good espresso quality but I feel like it’s definitely missing something. my sister got a regular latte and as you can see, our lattes looks VERY different and mine was much more creamy. we would not recommend regular latte, it was made much differently. we got broccoli cheese soup, it was very good the texture was interesting. although didn’t fill the cup :/ then a tomato soup, it was much sweeter than salty or basil tasting. I didn’t like it much personally but filled cup!:) other worker took dishes for us kindly. Overall super a unique place and would return.
Claire L — Google review
The café is located inside an old junior high school building that has been converted into comfortable relaxing coves, the Cafe, a whole section of local artists' studios/wares to browse, and small business offices. Love it! The Smiley Cafe has a limited, but tasty, menu for breakfast and lunch, specialty coffees, a good tea selection, smoothies, and bottled drinks. Highly recommend a unique place to chill.
Carol B — Google review
Delicious food (even has vegan offerins), great coffee and a chance to check out the local art for sale.

Nestled in the basement of the Irish Embassy Pub in Durango, Steaming Bean Coffee Co. offers a unique and subtle coffee experience. The shop provides a $7 burrito and coffee combo every morning, featuring freshly made burritos that are perfect for an on-the-go breakfast. This cozy spot is popular among locals and offers real mugs instead of paper cups, creating a more environmentally friendly atmosphere.
Great cozy little place to grab a cuppa and even a pint if you like. Hidden away to keep tourists out which is also nice. Real mugs for your brew and not all paper cups is also nice and spoons instead of plastic stirring sticks for the environmentally conscious. Quiet and perfect to plug in and write while you wake up.

Good for a small town, bad compared to a global standard of coffee. Nice atmosphere, steer clear of the food. As with most, faced fierce attitude from the barista, the short one with dark shoulder length hair.
Global E — Google review
Over the past few years, I have watched coffee shops blow up and get big and then crash and burn. The Bean is one of the first stand-alone coffee shops in Durango, but it doesn’t feel that way anymore. After their move to the musty, dark basement of the Irish Pub, they have started to lose themselves. It seems that their coffee, baristas, and general positive energy has slipped away and turned into a mediocre location with improperly-ratioed espressos, over-steamed milk drinks, and generic coffee flavors. We loved the Bean, but as they moved to their new location, it has felt like they needed a revamping and renervizing. We hope they turn it around.
Finn F — Google review
The Bean has improved greatly in the past five years, and they are almost there! The environment has become my favorite in Durango since they remodeled. Comfy couches, a variety of seating arrangements and plenty of 120v outlets! Excellent lighting and the best people watching. My only complaint is that they, like the Durango Coffee Company, have in the past offered regular priced small espresso drinks starting with 1 shot of espresso, which is probably against the law in cities like Seattle and the like. Not sure if they have changed this as I stick to the drip at the bean now, but the board suggests americanos start at a single shot of espresso, which to put in perspective is equivalent to a half cup of coffee or less. This is the difference in 3 stars to 4 or 5.
Alex K — Google review
Super cool coffee place in downtown Durango! Stopped for a few iced coffees which were reasonable in price and awesome! They have a great selection of syrups and alternative mills, and the barista was very friendly.
Alexa S — Google review
I'm a local. I work from home / at coffee shops or library, and I'd like to give The Bean regular business. But each time I've visited, I've had terrible customer service -- zero acknowledgement from the staff when waiting at the counter, baristas with their backs turned, 100% ignoring customers. Sorry, but it's pretty simple to offer good customer service at a coffee shop, and plenty of other places in town are able to. I'll go there instead.
B M — Google review
The Cutest Barista I've ever met works here. He always wears the coolest shirts and will greet you with a charming head nod and a captivating smile. 420/10

Delicious sipping cocoa offered as you walk in the door. Amazing ambiance. Killer customer service. Great truffles. The owners are amazingly friendly and were cool to let our family look around the facility even though there was not a tour happening at the time. We loved the cocoa pod they have on display. Super rad place to indulge. Thanks for a fun and tasty experience. Sunlight Peak, Colorado Cache, and Avalanche are definitely delicious!!

Such a wonderful experience and a true highlight of my trip! The moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm cup of cocoa to sip on. One of the employees kindly walked my sister and I through each of their chocolates, sharing stories about their company and each chocolate along the way. The customer service was exceptional, the staff were incredibly kind, and the cocoa and chocolates were absolutely delicious! You can tell these people truly care about their customers and put love into what they do.
Sidney H — Google review
This was our 2nd visit. The hot chocolate to sip while you browse is rich and delicious. The truffles are a true delight to be savored. The guy with the great hair is full of bad jokes the kids love. The kids enjoyed watching the team work in the back making chocolate. The very friendly owner took the time to explain to the kids what she was working on and how she entered the chocolate business. Great experience enjoying a local company.
Mindy J — Google review
What a wonderful Chocolate shop. Edie greeted us within a minute or so of coming in, asked if we'd like some drinking chocolate, we said yes please. The building is beautiful, staff professional and the chocolate is so delicious. We bought truffles and a chocolate bar. We'll be back Thank you for a wonderful experience.

So glad we didn’t miss this place! The chocolate is amazing and the old fashioned was mixed perfectly. Make sure to ask for a taste of their drinking chocolate!

Very cozy Chocolate/Coffee Shop. The Bandito was amazing! Barista Kyle was funny and made our experience enjoyable. Very relaxing place to unwind.

What an incredible Mexican Mocha, drinking chocolate with cinnamon and coffee. Thank you for making my Friday mocktail hour perfect!
Megan S — Google review
This place was a pleasant surprise, the menu is extensive and the customer service excellent. We stopped in for coffee after dinner; I was just expecting coffee in a paper cup and chocolate in a bag, what I got was an experience. Everything was presented with quality ingredients and care. I had the Mocha and my wife had an Irish coffee that came with a piece of chocolate. She said it was the best surprise ever because the chocolate went so well with the Irish coffee.

In Durango, Colorado, Cream Bean Berry is a must-visit artisan ice cream shop. They pride themselves on using real, organic ingredients from local farms to create their delicious ice creams. The shop offers a variety of gluten/nut/dairy-free options and has made a commitment to sustainability by sourcing ingredients locally and using biodegradable serving items.
Great little ice cream store with lots of vegan dessert options! They have vegan waffle and sugar cone options and 4 different dairy free flavors. They also had baked goods that were vegan (cookies, etc) everything marked well. The lemon raspberry sorbet was tasty, wish it was a tad smoother. The chocolate was nice and smooth. In downtown, so paid street parking. A couple tables inside. No samples :(
Robbie B — Google review
Not sure what the fuss is but it was just ok. Maybe I’m more of a Cold Stone customer, or Ashley’s or gelato. There were unfortunately a bit of ice in my ice cream, so even though it was mint oreo fudge, I expected a creaminess to the ice cream outside of the chunks. The mini was actually a full scoop and larger than I expected after seeing their serving size. Usually, shops hand you the ice cream and you pay, but the server placed my ice in a holder and continued to finish a large order before me, so that I had to wait, watching my cone. LOL.
C. M — Google review
Great habit of stopping here for ice cream when we are in Durango. Bonus that it was perfect patio weather too!! Today’s choices were vanilla bean, Belgium chocolate & coffee chocolate chip. All creamy, delicious and made an excellent combination.
Del — Google review
Visited June 2025 Everyone in Durango seems to adore Cream Bean Berry and I get it. Their commitment to the environment is front and center, from their locally sourced organic ingredients to their mission to “strive for maximum environmental sustainability in every aspect of the business.” That’s not just a tagline, it shows in everything they do. And I absolutely respect and support that! That said… I had the strawberry ice cream in a cup, and as much as I wanted to love it, I just didn’t. The biodegradable spoon they provided was a bit of a deal breaker for me. I know there are small metal spoons available (or you can BYO), but by the time I figured that out, the texture and flavor had already gone sideways. I’m all for saving the planet, and am grateful for businesses like this one who work hard to make it happen, but sadly I didn’t finish my scoop. It just didn’t taste like strawberry ice cream anymore once the spoon started doing its weird thing. Clearly a well-loved local gem with a big heart and a mission I consistently support, but for me, this one was a miss. Maybe I will try again next visit and bring my own spoon!
Tammy — Google review
My husband and I shared a waffle cone with: - Pumpkin Spice - Pear Sorbet - Mixed Berry Crisp - Strawberry Balsamic The strawberry balsamic and pear were my favorites. The pear flavor was so intense—I loved it. The balsamic was the perfect addition to strawberry and it was one of the best strawberry ice cream flavors I've had. The mixed berry crisp was mostly vanilla—it needed more mixed berry. I don't think the pumpkin spice was vegan, but it was kind of dry and not very creamy like non-dairy ice cream frequently is. They have some really great flavors, but unfortunately they don't do samples. I honestly considered not getting anything because of this. Hopefully you can get lucky and get flavors you like because there are some really good ones.
Jacqueline T — Google review
Will return. An average shop, relaxed; no tasting. They make the corn, which is not too common. I’ve vegan cookie and cream - it tastes like my store bought - guess I’m not too adventurous in ice cream.

Coffee is awesome. I've been coming here for 20 years. Food vendor has changed, and breakfast burritos are smaller than when they made them in-house, but they still taste good - just not AS good and not as much food.

I went there with a friend and we were going to get some boba and we were looking at the menu and the server showed us the cups and I said “oh so there’s no difference” like to joke about the sizes of the cups looking about the same size and she picked up the cups and put them together to show they were different, she sat down pulled up a chair and pulled out her phone and said “take your time” obviously I was joking and just trying to lighten the mood because she seemed like she was having a bad day. Horrible costumer service i wished she’d been more respectful I don’t want to go back to that store.

The cafe features an open-air patio with bistro lights and a cozy back room equipped with classic games and comfortable couches. Their menu includes a variety of options such as quiche, burritos, sandwiches, toast, and homemade pastries.
What a cool breakfast spot in Durango! Visited this place on a Monday morning and it seemed like everyone was working on their laptops. I got a mushroom quiche since everyone seemed to be raving about hem. And it was very very good. Even though I don’t love mushrooms. But…the croissant my daughter ordered was amazing. So good! My iced coffee was terrific too.

Absolutely phenomenal experience at Hermosa Cafe in Durango! From the moment we walked in, we were struck by the inviting atmosphere—bright, warm, and thoughtfully designed. The decor is stunning, with a perfect blend of modern touches and cozy charm that makes you feel right at home while still being something special. Every corner of the space has an intentional, artistic feel that adds to the overall vibe. We came in as a family of seven, which can sometimes be a challenge, but the staff was incredibly accommodating and welcoming. They made sure we were comfortable, and the seating options worked beautifully for a group our size. It’s rare to find a place that caters so well to both aesthetics and family-friendliness, but Hermosa absolutely nails it. As a family visiting from out of town, this was the perfect spot to relax, recharge, and enjoy one last memorable moment together before heading home. The energy of the place is vibrant but relaxed—ideal for grabbing a coffee, enjoying a bite, and just soaking it all in. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Hermosa Cafe is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Durango!

Funky place with a very eclectic vibe. We had a group of six and everyone enjoyed just hanging out and talking. Really good cold nitro coffee with a nice chocolate finish that lingers! Delicious cappuccino. Food options for any appetite. Ample seating inside and outside. Very friendly service behind the counter.

Delicious quiche! Staff is super nice and friendly! Great spot! Everything looked great. We got the Quiche Lorain and my 2 year old said yummy in my tummy with every bite. We got the massive cinnamon rolls to go. They only make 4 a day… and they are massive. We ate left overs the next day and they still tasted amazing

The food quantity I felt is small. The taste was good but the quantity is less. You get a single slice of bread with your choice . Tried green Avacoda - usual taste and sunrise with was different and unique. The staff was super friendly - only reason to go back again. Ambience is good. The plus point is it starts early in the morning. The coffee was regular compared to the competitor next door.

Oh my! I don’t make it downtown much anymore since moving to the outskirts over a decade ago. When I do, I usually stick to the old favorites I’ve known forever — but today I decided to be adventurous and try Hermosa Cafe. And wow, I am SO glad I did! The service was warm and genuinely friendly, the kind that makes you feel like you’ve been coming there for years even if it’s your first visit. And let’s talk about those quiches… absolutely beautiful and so tasty they might just ruin all other quiches for me. I was also impressed (and honestly kind of delighted) to see that all the regulars knew the baristas by name — you can tell it’s a true community spot. The whole place just has this fun, relaxed vibe that makes you want to hang out all morning. While I’m not a coffee drinker myself, the coffee looked fantastic, and I’ve officially found my new go-to spot for a great matcha latte. What a gem of a place. I’ll definitely be back — probably with embarrassing frequency.
Samantha H — Google review
The employees were polite. We each ordered a different matcha. They were all horribly powdery (not properly made), texture and taste were both very bad. It was frankly the worst matcha I’ve ever had…and I’ve had a lot.
Julia R — Google review
The young girl in the Evanescence shirt shouldn’t be in customer service. Don’t worry sweetheart, there won’t be a “future” visit for us to your store, and we were having a perfectly “good day” before encountering your unnecessarily snarky condescension. Wish we’d bought a pastry at your competitor next door where the service was great. Next time, we will know better and not come into Hermosa at all. Sad because the pastry is pretty good but not at all worth the terrible service.

Literally the best coffee I’ve ever had! 🔥 John is amazing and super nice. My coworkers and I go here all the time and are always pleased. If you’re looking for a friendly face and a fabulous coffee, go to Crossroads!

Great lil coffee shop with friendly service. This tiny place is tucked inside the bank. However, you can order at the outside window should the bank not be accessible. Refreshing brew selections and some tasty treats as well.

Good coffee and a simple breakfast sandwich, priced for folks that work for a living. No pretension required. I like fancy stuff as well, but Durango has a real shortage of solid joints like this. Special because it is normal.

Beverage distributor
Coffee wholesaler
Desert Sun Coffee Roasters is a certified organic and ethically traded coffee roastery located in Mancos, Colorado. They roast their beans using USDA organic certification and purchase their coffee through Cooperative Coffees, a fair trade organization that cultivates relationships with small-scale producers across the globe. Their products are consistently terrific - know that when ordering from Desert Sun you're getting delicious, quality, fresh, and thoughtfully sourced coffee.
I originally found Desert Sun Coffee Roasters when I was testing different coffee roasters for my coffee shop. I sampled about 30 different companies and by far Desert Sun is the best. We love it so much we actually took a road trip up to Durango, CO to check out the location. We have sadly sold the business. But, we continue to buy the 5lb bag once a month for our Sunrise Espresso addiction. Oh, and the customer service is incredible, they have always gone above and beyond.
Chaila M — Google review
I have literally never tasted worse coffee in my life. Are these beans even washed? Every cup I've had tastes like dirt, and it's nearly impossible to find a diner serving something else in town.
Felipe C — Google review
I’m not trying to be mean. I’m really not. And I think it’s really cool you guys are into regenerative farming, etc. But I bought a bag of “very dark roast” whole bean from Natural Grocers in Wichita, KS. Annnnnd… the smell and taste of the coffee MAY be the worst I’ve ever experienced. Y’all need to ditch the very dark roast immediately. I’m scared to try any of your other roasts because of my experience with it.
Big B — Google review
My wife and I are in full panic. Natural Grocers in Grand Junction is discontinuing Desert Sun coffees. Your Sumatra is the No. 1 reason for us to set foot in Natural Grocers. I feel like one of the people who jogged through the desert with Forrest Gump until he decided to return home. “Now what are we supposed to do?” When we found your Sumatra, we stopped searching for a roast that is perfect for us. Please start a relationship with another GJ retailer. Thanks!

I toured the roaster. The Owner is a Amazing man❣️His insights on fair trade inspire me.
Elene D — Google review
Great coffee. Dark Canyon is my favorite roast ever. I wish it was a bit cheaper to buy and have delivered, it would definitely be my daily blend. It's my go-to coffee for leisurely weekends and special occasions. Complex and delicious.
Ben B — Google review
I love your coffees - with one exception. Your "Dark Canyon" which is supposed to be a French Roast is the worst French roast I have ever drank. Your description on the bag that it has a "tobacco flavor" is accurate. It tastes like an ashtray! Or that somebody has ground old cigarette butts in with it. I would suggest a French roast using a different bean. Even the cheap "8 O'clock" French roast they sell at City Market tastes better than the Dark Canyon. I have tried to like it - to develop a taste for it but if that's what is being served at work or at a bakery I go somewhere else for my coffee. One office that I visit frequently actually has that particular flavor on their coffee clubs list of coffees to please avoid as nobody but the cigarette smokers like it. Please take this as constructive criticism. I love every other coffee you make but this one needs to be improved.
Randy C — Google review
Awesome coffee ☕️ have favorites but always try their new limited editions. Happy to support excellent small business 😊 Having found the blends we love we now order 5lb and 2lb bags as a monthly purchase to save on shipping cost and environmental impact.
