I had high expectations after reading the reviews and considering how difficult it was to get a reservation. All in all it was an average experience. The food was ok. Not bad. The chefs wine selection and knowledge was probably the highlight. He was friendly enough but seemed rushed and ready for us to leave after our meal as he had plans to meet friends or something. Our reservation was at 7pm and we felt rushed out by 9pm. The portion was pretty small for the price even compared to other A5 restaurants in the area. The menu choices were very limited and cheap as other reviews have pointed out. I was excited for the eclectic atmosphere but it just seemed cluttered and dusty and dirty and not enjoyable. Overall I’d not return to this place and would not recommend it to my friends.

Kokubu was recommended by a Kobe native I met in California and what started as a side quest from our stay in Osaka to try the restaurant, turned out to be a star of our trip so far! The setting was intimate and charming, and the Chef and waitress were warm and most welcoming. The menu was simple and easily one of the best meals I've experienced, from Chef's special miso soup blend, tasty grilled vegetables to the beautifully marbled and perfectly cooked beef. One of the highlights during my visit to Japan. My friends and I visited in 2018 and were very fortunate to have snagged a reservation here. The chef was very friendly and spoke great English. He was educating us on the heritage of Kobe beef and showing us the authenticity of his products with certificates that showed which cow the meat we were going to consume was coming from. To this day the words “black Tajima cow” still echoes in my head. The meat here was hands down the best I’ve consumed in my life. After our first bite, it was just silence, my friends and I just looked at each other and the hair on our arms were raised. Genuine goosebumps! The service staff were very friendly and near the end of our meal, I believe the chef’s mother came out and made us some delicious garlic fried rice. This has been one of the best meals of my life and I reflect on it fondly from time to time. Please do yourself a favour and dine here, I absolutely recommend it!

A short walk from Kobe Station, Kokubu is my go-to spot for Kobe beef. Reservations are essential but straightforward - I made mine over the phone, and the chef, who speaks English, handled it effortlessly. The menu offers two portion options: 150g or 200g. I opted for the 200g, and it was exceptional - perfectly marbled, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and bursting with rich flavour. I also added the garlic fried rice, which complemented the richness of the steak beautifully and brought balance to the meal. Highly recommended for an unforgettable dining experience.

Booked a reservation due to a recommendation. We had a 6pm reservation and we were the only ones in the restaurant but the sign says they are fully booked every day. So you might be able to snag an earlier dinner without reservations because it filled up after we were done. The steak was definitely a nice melting texture but I just wish the timing of serving the food was better. Our vegetables were cooked first and they had to just sit on the plate so we could eat it with our steaks and it took a while for our steaks to start grilling. Once the steaks were starting to be served, they all came out at once so by the time we got to our last half of our portions, the steak was cold. Everything tasted good, salad and sauce were fantastic and the garlic rice was good, though, nothing remarkable, and Kobe wagyu beef isn't my favorite (I prefer a more beefy flavored steak), but I did not let that detract me from the experience, the food, and the quality. I just wish the execution could be improved. If I were to eat Kobe beef in Kobe again, I might try a different spot.

We went at 10.30am (when it opens) and there was already a line of about 12 people. Either go a bit later on a weekday like 4pm, or you may need to wait a little.

A set of Akashiyaki comes with 20 pieces for 1,000 yen. For the oden, everything is priced at 200 yen except the octopus leg, which costs 500 yen. To be honest, I found the oden much tastier than the Akashiyaki. I know Akashiyaki has a similar texture to Osaka-style takoyaki, but maybe because its outer layer is made with egg, it ended up being a bit soft and mushy overall.
