Nestled in a charming locale, Designs Gallery & Cafe has been a beloved spot since 1996, renowned for its inviting atmosphere where friends gather to enjoy exceptional coffee and delectable cakes. The cafe also serves delightful lunches that are sure to please any palate. As you explore the gallery, you'll discover an ever-evolving collection of exhibitions showcasing stunning designer jewelry, captivating paintings, and intricate glass and willow sculptures from both established and emerging artists.
Came here with my wife and two dogs. Dogs are only allowed in the back garden area which is accessed down a lane to the side of the restaurant. Here you will find outdoor tables and chairs , of which some are under cover shouldn’t rain. There was a dog bowl with water and when our order arrived a wee dog biscuit was offered. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years, and the food is always amazing. The cafe is based downstairs and does get very busy at times, testament to its good food.

Our second visit to this lovely café in the centre of town with great seating in the garden area or conservatory. Good coffee, service with a smile and quite simply the best scones ever and the wife states her lemon drizzle cake was pretty good too!

Lovely fast, friendly and efficient service for 10 hungry cyclists. We got a large table in the big garden out back (which you would never know existed from the Main Street). Great value for money and quality food.

First time visit to Castle Douglas and the wonderful Designs Gallery Cafe. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here - the Croque Monsieur was superb. Choice of eating inside or out and the sunny rear garden was very relaxing. Good customer service and good coffee. Thank you.

The staff are absolutely lovely, I only had a sandwich so I can't speak of the food really, you can't mess up a sandwich, however it was very nice! The best thing is how lovely the atmosphere is. The little garden makes a nice backdrop to your food and drink and feels like a mini escape. Highly recommend you try it out.

I went with friends on Saturday, (including my dog). The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and the food was great. They had a specials menu, which we tried, and the coffee was delicious! Dogs are welcome in the outside area, and there is a large covered area for shade, or from the elements, and dog bowls are dotted around the area. Definitely visiting again!

This café is amazing. Always clean and bright. A great menu offering delicious food. All the staff are so friendly and caring. We have been visiting every week for our lunch and it has always been delicious. 5 stars plus!

Nice shop with books and craft goods. Went to café but saw main meals not on till 11.30. We both went for eggs Benedict on sourdough toast. Unfortunately the poached eggs were overdone. Also we saw somebody getting soup that was listed in the menu as not before 11.30. Had we known we would have had that. Overall recommended to try it and the shop has some nice, but pricey, things.

Nestled by the harbor, The Jewel In The Crown is a charming local hotel and pub that exudes warmth and hospitality. Renowned for its generous portions of delectable cuisine, this venue boasts an inviting outdoor terrace perfect for enjoying fresh seafood delights like smoked haddock or a Scottish seafood platter. Diners rave about the exceptional service and authentic flavors that make every meal memorable. With an impressive menu featuring both meat and vegetarian options, guests can indulge in recommendations from friendly staff who are eager to assist.
My family and I had lovely time at The Jewel In The Crown. It's BYOB, you're being advised of it whilst making a booking and waiters happily offer a glass for your beverage on arrival. Selection of the food was really impressive, both meat and vegetarian options. We went for recommendations (sorry, can't really remember names of the dishes) from one of the waiters who was super helpful and accommodating, and we were not disappointed. Portions were big and very satisfying. Service all together was great, very attentive and accommodating. In general, it's a perfect spot for a family meal as well as visit with your friends. Definaly we'll be back. Thank you!

I went to collect a takeaway on Sunday after 4pm. The restaurant was not busy and it was just me in there when I went to collect. I ordered chicken tikka masala, chips and a naan bread. The container was half filled with what looked like watered down sauce. I could count 6 pieces of tiny chicken and I could count the chips because the portion was so tiny. The naan bread was soggy and seemed like it had been microwaved. By the way the photo was everything on the plate bar the naan bread, and no I haven't half eaten it. I'm sorry but how is that good value for £13.75?

Visiting the area, we called in on Saturday night without pre booking. We were given a table straight away and our order taken promptly. A little disappointing that they didn't serve any alcoholic drinks, but not the end of the world. The food was delicious and the staff were great. Top notch 👌

We loved our meal here. All tasty, well presented and excellent service. We arrived about 7.15pm, 2 people no reservation on a Friday evening. Note they do not sell alcohol but you can bring your own.

Spectacular service, fresh authentic dishes with flavours to die for and so much value for money, this place goes the extra mile. Tandoori mixed grill is to die for with coconut and mango rice, oh wow

While visiting the area we decided to try ordering food here did it all online with our any issue and found everything was layed out with common sense on the web site. The place it's self was much bigger then it looks from the out side with a restraint to eat in very nice clean and were made to fell welcome by the very kind staff. We were collecting food and the sizes were big definitely value for the money in truth the prices were very reasonable for what you get and everything tasted amazing definitely recommend and I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area again.

Sadly we arrived on buffet night. We had to ask after a long wait for the menu. Then had to go looking for someone to take our order. We waited a long the for the food and it was awful. Poppadoms good but disgusting pickled that were more like sauces from a bottle with spice added. Prawn vindaloo just brown and nasty flavour. I love curry. But this is the worst I ever tasted.

We got a take out to take to our caravan in mossyard. Went for the meal for 2 and split it between 3 of us. It was excellent food, really tasty. Miriam served us and was great to my kids. My son said she was a really lovely lady 😊

Italian restaurant
Carlo's Restaurant is a charming, family-operated Italian establishment that offers a limited number of tables and features a rotating menu showcasing traditional dishes using seasonal ingredients. Recently visited by The Hungry Biker, the waitresses were friendly and welcoming, ensuring a pleasant dining experience. As an experienced chef, The Hungry Biker found it challenging to enjoy restaurant steaks; however, Carlo's chef skillfully prepared the steak with great attention to detail, resulting in a delicious and satisfying meal.
After a very soggy walk we chanced our luck at Carlos and we got the last table. We couldn't have been more grateful to the staff for fitting us in as there aren't many places to eat in Castle Douglas if you haven't booked before hand. The staff were all so friendly, warm and welcoming. The food was brilliant, full of flavour, great portion sizes and the focaccia was amazing. Would highly recommend!
Ailsa — Google review
Bit disappointed really. The service was very friendly and my main course of chicken kebab was fine but the sides were just plain boiled veg and quite dull. There's a balance to be had between waiting too long for food and being rushed. Our starters were barely finished when the mains came and we felt very rushed. In and out in 45 minutes.
S — Google review
Food is amazing. Service is great. Staff are really friendly. Prices are really reasonable. My wife and I both had steaks. Best steaks we've ever had. Cooked to perfection. It gets busy, so book in advance. Next time we're in Scotland, we will be back.

One of the hidden gems in the borders, from outside unassuming but once inside transported to your happy place. Check out the specials menu, lobster fresh from Solway Firth this morning. Lovely mix of herbs and spices all cooked fresh. Chef even popped out for feedback and ensure everything okay. Definately going back. Apologies food pics already started just too appetising to wait for pictures!!

As a chef myself I really find eating steak in restaurants difficult.... however Carlo's chef cooked my steak perfectly the attention to detail was lovely and refreshing! my prawns were huge, punching full of flavour! And my tiramasu was the best ive ever tasted!! the staff were lovely very friendly and attentive. can't wait to come back!! its a five star from me The Hungry Biker #TheHungryBikerFoodBlog #highlyrecomemded #hiddengems

Came here the first time and had dinner with friends. Such a lively place. Food is nice , especially the starter. Garlic bread is so soft , focaccia is yummy , salmon sauce is the best !
Yizhen J — Google review
Very friendly and accommodating staff. We were walk ins and they still managed to find us a nice table. I would highly recommend this place if you love italian food, remember that pizza is not italian ;) so no pizzas there. Wine list a little expensive but it is a very nice restaurant. This is a very high end restaurant compared to the little town however my chicken was done with it being a little too chewy/dry in parts and others a little off texture. (Basically too high heat when cooking). There was a bit too much sauce with this meal, could have done with a sprinkling of cheese. My friends has a great meal and stated 5 stars. I would higly recommend this place with a solid 4 stars. Still room for a little improvement.
Guardian D — Google review
One of our favourite places to eat in Castle Douglas, if not our outright one. Proper authentic Italian food of really high quality, and they know how to entertain our 4 year old every time he's in. The fact they remember him is even better. Cannot recommend more highly.

Nestled in the heart of Castle Douglas, The Mad Hatter Cafe is a local gem celebrated for its commitment to freshly prepared meals made from locally sourced ingredients. This charming spot offers a delightful array of dishes served throughout the day, ensuring that every bite bursts with flavor and quality. During my recent visit, I savored a rich coffee alongside a perfectly baked scone topped with jam—a match made in culinary heaven!
I recently visited The Mad Hatter Cafe and had a delightful experience. I ordered a coffee that was rich and smooth, paired with a scone served with jam. The scone was fresh and perfectly baked, with the jam adding just the right touch of sweetness. It was the perfect treat, and it really hit the spot! The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made the visit even better. I’ll definitely be returning for another relaxing break at this charming cafe!

I came here for an experience, that was sadly not met. The appearance of a mad hatters tea party ends when you walk through the doors. The decor is drab and the ice cream counter is empty .. the food however was fantastic I had the best steak pie I ever tasted cooked in lava it was so hot..
Alison B — Google review
We visited Castle Douglas today and happened upon Mad Hatter in the main street. The food here is lovely, we enjoyed two jacket potatoes, one with haggis the other with curried chicken. Fresh, tasty and enjoyable. I also noticed the cafe was very, very clean. If you visit a lot of places after the pandemic they've gone back to their bad old ways of not properly cleaning tables. The table and chairs were very clean 👍 it's good to see someone running a tight ship. Staff were friendly and the prices were very reasonable. I saw a couple of posts moaning about prices, I don't think they've been out recently. Prices in England and Scotland in general are much higher than here.

Great place Great food Pricey bag's for life pictured £9.50for x1, however "Dog friendly " Serves doggy 🐕 ice cream 🍦 😋 😋 🐕

"dog friendly"... Aparrently. Took my dog, told it couldn't sit aside me on a seat (as not hygienic), but allowed a woman to sit her baby in shitty nappy on the counter whilst paying (next to a tray of baking)... Urgh. I left.
Carol D — Google review
Very happy with our lunch. I had mushroom soup and a cheese toastie. Wife had tina mayonnaise jacket potato. 2 teas. £18.45. Only thing I didn’t like is you have to wait to be seated. This means people queue with the door open so very draughty if your sitting near the door.
Ken D — Google review
Been coming here for years. Lovely staff, great food and service. Dog friendly. The soup is the best
Linda T — Google review
We’d been eyeing up The Mad Hatter for months on our monthly visits to Castle Douglas, expecting a bit of Wonderland charm. Instead, we accidentally stumbled into what felt like the Queen of Hearts’ punishment chamber for breakfast lovers. We were greeted (and I use the term loosely) by a young lady whose face suggested we’d just asked her to personally re-tile our bathroom. Not even the faintest hint of a smile — clearly, grins are off the menu here. We bravely ordered the Full Breakfast £10.45 and oh my, what a journey that was. Imagine if someone Googled “cheap ingredients” and then ordered them in bulk. The egg was cremated to the point it could’ve doubled as a frisbee. The haggis smelled like it had been exiled from Scotland for bad behaviour. The square sausage looked like it had been pressed in a vice, then left to consider its life choices. Bland doesn’t even cover it — I’ve had more flavour licking an envelope. Coffee? Don’t even bother. It’s filter or bean-to-cup… so basically “choose your disappointment.” I surrendered and went for tea, which, to be fair, was the best part of the experience. Congratulations to the tea bag — you’re the real hero here. When it came to paying, I didn’t even get a “thanks” or a “goodbye.” Just the kind of awkward silence you’d expect if you’d broken someone’s lawn gnome. Basics, people. Basics. If you’re looking for a proper breakfast in Castle Douglas, I’d recommend anywhere but The Mad Hatter. Unless, of course, you enjoy bland food, burnt eggs, and service with a scowl. In that case — bon appétit!

During a recent weekend getaway in Castle Douglas, I stumbled upon The Jade Palace, and it turned out to be a delightful find! This charming Chinese restaurant offers an array of mouthwatering dishes that left me thoroughly impressed. The rice was particularly noteworthy—truly the best I've ever tasted! Each dish was bursting with flavor, making me grateful for the long wait at another nearby takeaway. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall warm atmosphere of the place.
Had a quick take away from here after work. The curry sauce was delicious The beef chow mein was delightful Salt and pepper chips could do with more onions and peppers but not complaining they were nice

This is mainly a takeaway these days. Same staff from when I was a kid about 30 years ago. Prices seem to have busted inflation and the quality of the food and friendliness is great. Popular with locals, expat locals like me and a great place for excellent and inexpensive food if you are visiting or passing through.

The service was really quick and amazing. The noodles were very good but the meat dish i ordered came with raw tomatoes which made the sauce taste weird. Also, it was more like nuggets than meat. I am not picky with my food but i didn't like it.

It was our first time here. Couldn't fault the service, the staff were very helpful and attentive. They knew two of us were vegetarian and made sure to double check on certain dishes to make sure they were suitable. Really enjoyed the variety of dishes and tastes. It was a very nice leisurely meal.

Wow, what a brilliant place. Had dinner here with friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal with none of the pretence you can get with other fine dining establishments. Make no mistake - this is fine dining - every course was a delight. A great experience, loved by locals and the national press alike. I'll be back.

Drove over from Glasgow to eat at Mr Pook's. Was not disappointed! Absolutely fantastic. Painstakingly made, all ingredients were locally sourced and the open kitchen was a treat to watch. Edward has really elevated the dining scene in the region and beyond! Word of advice; book well in advance!

Superb from start to finish. I emailed to book and Chef Pook fitted us in at the time we wanted. Upon arrival we were greeted by the friendly front of house team, who showed us to our table, talked through the specials, provided a bottle of water and took our drinks order. There is an extensive drinks menu, plenty of good cocktails, wines and beers. I opted for a negroni which was excellent. We were then brought a caramelised onion, goats cheese and pickle crostini, very nice. This was quickly followed by home made bread and then a soup in an espresso cup, made from foraged mushrooms, the best mushroom soup I have ever tasted. We ordered our meal, I must admit this was difficult as I could have chosen everything on the menu and specials! The menu offered fantastic Scottish produce, local and in season. All starters looked fantastic and the scallop and mushroom dish I had was absolutely superb and went well with the Grenache blanc The mains arrived, all looked to die for. The braised beef cheek with polenta and foraged mushrooms was my choice and I was not dissapointed, it was a lovely dish washed down with a good pinot. We could not resist the deserts and I could not resist a glass of tokaji to go with it. Our group loved the food, service and environment, thoroughly enjoying the experience. I will definately return when the opportunity arises. Edward Pook is a brilliant chef, with a great team and his restaraunt is amazing, a must visit for anyone looking for amazing food at good value,

A pleasant dining experience. We booked the table through email from the night before and had a response back the next following morning.. the food was excellent had given a complimentary appetiser and soup which was a surprise and a nice start for the meal. Ordered pea and early season garlic risotto for starter it was amazing and slow braised ox cheek to tasty.. can't fault it however the only thing we noticed is one of our server put our cutleries on the wrong position but it's nothing major over all would recommend this place and would definitely coming back again..

Had dinner here with my partner last night and can honestly say it was one if the nicest meals I've ever had in a restaurant. The starter, main and dessert were all on par with each other and so beautifully presented. We both had the Ox cheek raviolo, the lamb, and then I finished with the chocolate and raspberry dessert. The service was also great. Thank you so much for a beautiful meal, this is the highlight of our holiday so far!

Specializing in home-baked goods and menus featuring local produce, this establishment caters to a variety of events including weddings, corporate gatherings, business meetings, and private parties.
I recently visited The Scottish Pantry for a full Scottish breakfast, and I must say, the entire experience was outstanding from start to finish. From the moment I walked through the door, the warm greeting and friendly atmosphere set the tone for what turned out to be an incredibly enjoyable meal. The breakfast itself was a true delight. It included all the Scottish classics—haggis, black pudding, bacon, pork sausage, a perfectly fried egg, mushrooms, baked beans, fried tomato, a potato scone, and toast. Every bite was delicious, with the rich flavours of the haggis and black pudding standing out in particular. The portion was generous, and everything was cooked to perfection. To top it off, I enjoyed a fab latte that paired beautifully with the meal, making it the perfect way to start the day. The service was attentive and welcoming throughout, and even as I left, I was sent off with a smile. I’ll definitely be returning for more of their fantastic food and hospitality. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy an authentic Scottish breakfast experience!

Outstanding customer service and tasty made foods and drinks at unbeatable prices sets The Scottish Pantry well above all others. The Mega Burger was big, tasty and very filling, with Chips Salad and sauces for £10 a great feed. The Baked Potato (pumpkin size 😂) with Coleslaw and Mushrooms was equally more than a mouthful leaving us both energized to walk our daily 10,000 steps around the countryside. Passing onto the family our thanks and support was the least we could do...keep up the great work... "Tip" get there early or be happy to wait, so popular it is... 👍

Chinese takeaway
Chinese restaurant
Great Wall Takeaway is a Chinese restaurant known for its friendly and enthusiastic staff. Customers have praised the receptionist and kitchen staff for their warm welcome. The food is highly recommended, especially the Chicken with chilli and peppers, which is described as flavorful without being overly spicy. The chicken chowmein is also a hit, with fresh ingredients and no greasy aftertaste. Additionally, customers rave about the delicious prawn crackers served at Great Wall Takeaway.
This has been our place to go since I was a young lad for our family takeaway nights , and although there are times when it's lack of taste In over all consistency is great , having tried Chinese in varies places and countries I can count only a small few that compare to the great Wall and Billy And jade has always been friendly always makes you feel like a special customer along with the rest of the family

Castle Douglas doesn't appear to be the Food Town it proports to be when you arrive. We were hard pushed to find anything more unusual than we could get at home. Just Chinese, Indian and Fish and chips. However, we did have a fine Chinese meal from the Great Wall and the young man serving was incredibly friendly. So, a good experience. Thank you!
Nina T — Google review
Really bad experience with this chinese, had a chicken breast curry, the chicken breast was so thick we couldn't cut it...sorry for saying
Elizabeth M — Google review
Ordered by phone and young guy working there is very pleasant and helpful. Went to collect food and was ready at the arranged collection time. Most of the food was ok but I have to say I have never had an orange coloured satay dish. Not sure what it tasted of but certainly wasn't peanuts. I can only think they got the order wrong or their take on a satay dish is unlike any other Chinese place I've been to. Shame.

I called The Great Wall Chinese takeaway to place an order tonight and the receptionist was very enthusiastic and friendly, able to cater to my arrival time (travelled a distance to collect), when we arrived the kitchen staff were just as friendly, giving us a wave! I had requested a spicy meal and was recommended Chicken with chilli and peppers and it blew me away, not too spicy and it retained the delicious flavours. I also ordered some chicken chowmein that was equally delicious, not greasy and very fresh (I hate when some local chineses give you chicken chowbeansprouts), I received a good noodle, chicken and veg split. The Great Wall also hands down sell the best prawn crackers! The crunch was to die for, 10/10, value for money, highly recommend and would be back.

food very distasteful. I not recommend.
Nataleczka 9 — Google review
Very nice food, nice people, friendly & chatty. Would have preferred wet (gravy) chow mein (my fault for not asking), but still tasted great along with the duck and mushrooms. Minus 1* as chips overcooked. Ignore the bad reviews, everyone has different tastes.
DJ — Google review
If this is Chinese, I'm chairman Mao. I ordered the sweet and sour duck and received a bag full of greasy fried balls of meat that definitely was not duck. The Singapore noodles were ok, but that is only in comparison to the rest of the meal which was diabolical. I wouldn't feed this to my cat, who died 8 years ago. Probably a lucky escape. Avoid like the plague, or eat this and feel like you have the plague.

Nikos Restaurant in Castle Douglas offers a delightful dining experience with its delicious food and excellent service. The menu is extensive, featuring small plates, pizzas, and a variety of desserts, including options for vegetarians, vegans, and those needing gluten-free choices. The warm home-baked focaccia is a highlight among the starters. The seafood pasta stands out with perfectly cooked scallops, prawns, mussels, and squid. Customers also appreciate the attentive and welcoming waiting staff.
I was very lucky to win two roast Sunday dinners. We decided to have them as takeaway tonight. We were not disappointed. My roast chicken was tender and juicy. Vegetables and Yorkshire pudding were perfectly cooked. My husband had the roast lamb and said it also was delicious. We will definitely be seeing you soon. Thank you so much.

What an amazing place. We came down with our dog who is quite old now and doesn’t like being left alone somewhere that she isn’t familiar with. A quick google search and it tells me this place is dog friendly. However being a “Greek” restaurant I wasn’t sure, until that was I saw the menu. It’s more akin to a Mediterranean Tapas place than just Greek stuff. It was great. Massive menu, the staff were very friendly and even gave Izzy, my dog, some water. Very dog friendly with a big sign in the door saying dogs are welcome. We planned on having dessert but after the starter and mains i was stuffed. We will 100% be back. Great place.

Amazing food with very large portions. If you get the sharing platter you will only need 3 dishes per person!!!

Made for a special birthday lunch! £110 for the 5 of us, absolutely worth it. The food! The bread was warm when that incredible sharing starter came out, all home made, the flavours of the humous, aubergine thingy, garlic dip and other thing was amazing and the portion sizes of our mains were plenty! I had the seafood pasta, the scallops, prawns, muscles and squid were cooked perfectly and I'd have it again. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Lovely smiley staff Our 6 month old daughter enjoyed herself too. great quality high chair, nice and clean and we were allowed to store our fold up buggy in the corner. There are changing facilities in the one woman's toilet, not sure if there is in the men's We will be back

Fantastic mezze served by fantastic staff. Cannot recommend this place enough. The restaurant itself is lovely and even though they were full it never felt overly noisy or too busy and the serving staff were all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Laurie Arms is a pub that offers delicious food such as mac 'n' cheese, steak, sticky toffee pudding, and cre brulee. The bar can get busy, but there is also a dining room available for seating. The staff are friendly and the service is excellent. Customers have enjoyed their meals and would definitely visit again. Additionally, the pub is located near a campsite and the owner Suzanne has been kind enough to offer a lift home to some customers.
The Laurie Arms is a proper pub, a traditional local pub where the customers know the staff. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is cozy, warm and welcoming, being mid winter the fire was roaring which added to the coziness. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the drinks are cold. I highly recomend a visit to the Laurie Arms.

During my winter break, I visited Castle Douglas and stumbled upon The Old School House restaurant. Despite it being a weekday in January, the place was unexpectedly busy with most tables reserved. The staff were genuinely friendly, not just putting on a fake polite act for customer service. On my last day, I decided to have a Christmas lunch there with my husband after pre-booking a table.
One of the best places to eat in this area. Food is absolutely fantastic - not overpriced, well presented, locally sourced, freshly cooked and served wit a smile every time. Plenty of choice for both meat and non-meat eaters. Staff are friendly and always happy to have a wee chat and a laugh. It's dog friendly. I think dogs are only allowed near the entrance and not the main sitting area, which is good. I like dogs, but not a fan of them being allowed in restaurants, but that's just my opinion. Still one of the best places to eat with a good, chilled atmosphere. Good portion sizes. Cakes are delicious. Two log burners give off plenty of heat on cooler days. Booking is strongly recommended.
T A — Google review
We stopped at The Old School House during our motorhome trip, and it was such a great find. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcome. Although, my wife and I couldn’t help but laugh when the server mentioned they were really busy, and there were only four other people in the whole place and loads of empty tables! It gave us a good chuckle, but they seated us anyway, which we were happy about. It was a chilly day, so we both went for the soup of the day – tomato. Normally, tomato soup doesn’t excite me much, but wow, this one was incredible! You could tell it was freshly made from scratch, and it was packed with flavour. We also shared a brie, cranberry, and ham panini, and it was just perfect – warm, gooey, and delicious. The lady who served us was so lovely and friendly, which just made the experience even better. We left feeling full, happy, and properly warmed up, ready to continue our adventuring. If you’re ever in the area, definitely pop in. Great food, great people!

We had pie and chips before a long journey home and wow they did not disappoint. The food was freshly made, lovely and hot, great service with a smile and courteous, the portions were nice and big worth every single penny. We took our cake desserts away with us and again absolutely delicious. We can't wait to come back again. Thank you so much. Did Scotland proud yummy.

Absolutely brilliant, can’t recommend highly enough. We spent a few days in Castle Douglas for winter break and noticed this place after driving past a few times and decided to stop in on our last day. Despite being a random week day in the middle of Jan, it was surprisingly busy, most the tables had been reserved. Staff were not just that fake kind of polite from forced customer service, but genuinely nice. They were warm and friendly. The food was amazing, I opted for the salad with fish and meat and it was delicious. So fresh, wonderfully presented and so much flavour and much more than I could manage (looking around at other orders, it seemed generous portion sizes were common). Husband had the sausage and bacon pie and he too was very enamoured.

The Market Inn Hotel is a rustic lodging establishment located at 17 King Street in Castle Douglas. It offers cozy and unpretentious rooms, along with a laid-back restaurant that serves typical pub cuisine. The hotel also boasts three bars, providing plenty of options for guests to unwind and enjoy their evening. Additionally, the hotel hosts disco nights for those looking to dance the night away.
We were instantly made to feel very welcome from the owner, she was great and introduced us to her lovely staff/family. Definitely up there with the best customer service we've experienced and the food was excellent. Really nice atmosphere and I think a lot of other places could learn a thing or two from them! First on the list for a return visit when we go back on holiday, would highly recommend to anyone, thank you!😊

The staff at The Market Inn were lovely, attentive and very hard working. It wasn't an unpleasant stay but £120/night? Really? No, sorry...way, way overpriced! The room was okay and so was the food but it was just that...okay.

Enjoyed our stay as a couple, room size was good and also nicely decorated and clean, good location with a few restaurants and takeaways nearby, a few pubs nearby also but the Market Inn had a nice bar with a good selection of drinks with a function room at the back with music and a pool table. There was a cocktail bar out the back. The food was really good with good, friendly service. The beds were quite comfortable for me, but my partner said it was a little firm for her.

What a wonderful place to stay, friendly, warm and comfortable. Our room was spotless, large, bright and fresh. The food is to die for, a great selection and cooked very nicely. I had Rabbie Burns tower, I would return just for that. A nice selection of beers and whisky. Our full Scottish breakfast was unmatchable, I'm a fan of haggis and I want let down. A special mention to Sarah, Terri, Mia and Sionaid. Thanks for making us welcome and for a lovely stay. Please tell Rab I went to Hendersons and got my haggis!

Stopped here for lunch. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The sweet and sour chicken was very good but the Balmoral chicken wasn't. The whisky and marmalade sauce tasted good but was far too thick; the haggis was tasty but the chicken was so overcooked it was chewy.

Nestled in the charming area of Castle Douglas, The Olive Retreat is a delightful dining spot that caters to a variety of dietary needs, making it an ideal choice for families and pet owners alike. Absolutely fantastic restaurant. Food is absolutely amazing, and there's so much choice! Fab selection of gluten free options. Lovely cocktails and wine menu too. You are able to build your own dish with a choice of sides. Must make so much extra work, especially if there's a few of us, but never a problem. Been there numerous times now and always brilliant. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is great, and the food is fantastic. All made in the restaurant from good quality produce, which I'm aware is all sourced locally too. Definitely recommend 👌 Will always be one of my go to places!!

Wow - looking for a place to eat on a Sunday and found the Olive Retreat. We went in hesitantly and the extensive menu catering for gluten free, plant based meals, smaller plates, and dairy free had us concerned they might be stretched too thin to be any good. How wrong we were. From the friendly welcome to the concern about our possible vegetarian needs (neither of us are but we love veggie dishes), the fantastic food, and the chat, we really enjoyed the visit. Well done the Olive Retreat: we will be back! 😊

Back here again, this time with 2 dogs and not just one. I came down to the area for one night to escape the craziness that is Edinburgh during the festival. With two dogs our eating options are limited, but thankfully this place is dog friendly. VERY dog friendly. Got seated and we asked if the dogs wanted some water, which was fully accepted. They then settled and we ordered some amazing food. Honestly, easily one of the best restaurants in all of Dumfries and Galloway by a mile. Just look at the menu and other reviews, it’s simply awesome. The sharing platter is so good. I had the gyros for main and warm gooey brownie for dessert. Oh, the owner gave each of our dogs some homemade dog ice cream, banana and peanut butter flavored!!! So amazing.

Large menu with plenty of choice. Greek sausage gyros was very tasty. Prawn saganaki portion was huge. I thought it was pretty good value overall, considering standard of dishes. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

Very pleasantly surprised at the quality of service and food in this place! We went out camping over the weekend and made a quick stop in CD, this was one of the few places open. The young lads that served us were so professional and accommodating. The menu catered to all our annoying dietry requirments, everyone had something to pick from!! Amazing! The dishes seemed pricey, but the size and quality of food made up for it and by the end we were so full, it didn't feel like we spent much money at all! A shoutout to staff that really seemed to care for our dietry requirements and were super attentive! I would drive back down to Castle Douglas to eat here again.
Margaret C — Google review
We are here twice while staying in castle Douglas and it was by far the best food of our holiday. A huge menu which sometimes reduces quality but not here. Mostly Greek but also Italian and other Mediterranean food. The thing I loved was the sides. With every main you can choose two sides from a long list and as much care had gone into the sides as the mains. I had souvlaki, greek salad and homemade chips. Faultless. On the second visit I had stifado, tomato salad and homemade chips. Those chips were too good to miss.

Quaint, cosy and completely charming with a beautiful view of the water, trees and birds. Teas, coffees, treats and very tempting bacon baps on offer. Best of all, it’s clearly got regulars who stop by for a chat and friendly cup of tea.

The small roadside Café is sadly almost easy to miss. But if you stop here, it's definitely worth it. The café does look a bit messy with a lot of boxes and food packaging laying around and it could definitely be a bit more clean. That said, the food (Haggis Roll and Sausage Roll) was very good and the tea was ok. For my opinion it wasn't too expensive and definitely worth the money. Service took some time as the owner, an older lady, seems do be doing everything by herself, but for me that wasn't a problem. Food still get's served fast and hot and I'm fully ok with waiting 5 minutes for my rolls, especially as you can use the meantime to look at the view over the nearby bay. Quite some traffic noise from the street, but there is a lot of space for parking. Although on a sunny day out it might get very crowded here. During my visit (Cloudy and slighty rainy Saturday around noon) there were around 10 people there other than me. Overall: Nice Café, nice food, friendly owner, good view, good visit

We were going to have lunch or high tea here, but for some unknown reason, it was made very difficult to do so. We tipped up on a Monday, on spec, to grab some lunch, but discovered they were not serving as they are effectively closed to non residents on Mondays. Member of staff we spoke to was very pleasant and helpful and gave us details to contact manager to book another day. Wife sent email that night to manager to book next day for lunch or high tea, but no response. Called next morning to try to book for that day but they could not do it. No apology for not responding to email. Apparently you have to call some days in advance to make a booking. Fine if you are local, but doesn't really work if you are only visiting for a week. Clearly not a place for impromptu eating. So we never got to eat here, which was a shame, as they are one of few places in area where dogs are welcome.

My favourite food is back and better than ever! 😍 The new Sambuca is unreal — amazing food, lovely people, and that same local warmth we’ve all missed. Couldn’t be happier for my friends — go support them! ❤️

What a delight. The owner Sam has wired crazy hard to get this over the line, and now Castle Douglas has a restaurant which rivals any top tier Edinburgh one. From its decor and level of service, to its very comprehensive menu, it really does suit almost everyone. The food was awesome and the never was packed. Gyros are a favorite on mine by far. Can’t recommended it enough.
