History Museums
The Archaeological Museum of Kos, established in 1936 during the Italian occupation, showcases a wealth of ancient island artifacts including sculptures and mosaics. Following extensive renovations funded by the EU, the museum reopened in September 2016. The distinctive building houses a collection that offers insight into the rich history and artistic legacy of ancient Kos.
Really enjoyed the museum, holds a massive amount of items from discoveries found across the island with plenty of detailed descriptions about their history. The only slight negative (and I may have missed them), I could have done with a guide book and I'm pretty certain there was no shop, I really wanted a book on the archeology of Kos. Regardless of that though it was a bright and informative way of keeping entertained whilst there was a massive early April thunderstorm going on outside, added to the atmosphere!
Allan C — Google review
I enjoyed the exhibition at this museum. However, for a ticket price of €10, it feels a bit steep, especially since the visit only takes about half an hour—or up to an hour if you take your time reading and sitting down. Overall, I would recommend it if you’re genuinely interested in the subject. But if you’re unsure, I wouldn’t advise going.
Glen B — Google review
It's only open on certain days, luckily we got there on a weekday where it was open. The site is beautifully restored with some good explanations. If you're in kos island and have some time swing by this ancient marble. You should give a chance
KampRitmi — Google review
A very beautiful place where you can see the history and ancient ruins of Kos Island. I recommend it — if you are a student, it’s free.
Talu B — Google review
Visited midweek. Small museum covering some of Kos amazing history. Unfortunately it didn't appear to be in chronological order and cost €10. I would strongly suggest that Kos place information signs on the numerous historical sites around the town to explain the significance of what just appears to be a load of rubble.
Ron H — Google review

This two floor Museum is close to the harbor and Main Street of Kos. With reading mostly everything it took me about 45-minutes to get through. Interesting info but not laid out in any way that makes sense. Could have done a much better job. Does have a lot of the sculptures from the Roman Villa and from a few sites around Kos. It cost €10 to enter and I personally do not think it was worth it.

Ancient Ruins
The Roman Odeon of Kos, an open-air theater constructed in the 2nd century, features restored marble seating and galleries. Surrounding attractions include the Hippocrates tree, believed to have stood since ancient times when the renowned doctor taught his students under its shade. Other notable sites on the island include Ottoman mosques, buildings from the Italian occupation period, and historic landmarks like castles and churches.
An impressive site of historical importance. You can climb the steps and have a good view over the entire site. There are tunnels to explore underneath too. Good information written in Greek and English. And best of all it was free!
Toni B — Google review
You can feel the history of the Odeon as you walk up to it. It is only small but it is quite impressive. It only takes about half an hour or so to look around and take a few photos, but it's worth it. You don't need tickets to enter, and it is free of charge.
Derek B — Google review
I usually give ancient sites 5 stars, and while it is interesting, it's been over restored and looks like a modern seating area you'd find in a park. Apart from a few areas they left alone, and they're behind iron gates and inside you see modern office chairs which ruins the small amount of the truly ancient part of the site. It's easy to walk to if you're in Kos, and it's free which is really all that's good about it.
Brian M — Google review
Yesterday, I visited the Roman Odeon in Kos, an ancient auditorium dating back to the 2nd century AD that once served as the hub of public life with musical competitions, senate meetings, and civic celebrations. Some original marble seating remains, and the site has been thoughtfully restored since its discovery in 1929. Today, the Odeon is still part of Kos’s vibrant heritage—often hosting cultural events and exhibitions—and you can even explore the fascinating underground walkways where several remarkable statues were found during excavations. Plenty of information boards inside too.
James O — Google review
The Odeum of Kos is definitely worth a visit, especially since it’s free. The site itself is impressive, but what makes it even more interesting are the tunnels underneath. They give you a great insight into how the structure looked and functioned before it started to crumble over time. A short stop, but a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past.
Glen B — Google review
A well preserved theatre however being an Odeon it's much smaller than oter ancient theatres. Don't let that stop you exploring this place, the information panels in the restored vaulted passageways do an excellent job of telling the complete story of this structure - I especially liked the reconstruction drawing showing it in its glory.
Phillip M — Google review
This is about a 5 minute walk from the bus station in Kos Town. Quite quiet when I visited which was good. You can view under the steps too. They probably could have done a much better restoration job as the majority of steps / tiers look like concrete.

Casa Romana is an ancient Roman villa that has been restored and now houses two floors of art, including mosaics, frescoes, and sculptures. The museum was originally founded in 1936 by the Italians and has recently undergone significant improvements funded largely by the EU. These enhancements include improved signage, restoration of fallen columns, and new exhibitions at Casa Romana and the small Epigraphical Museum beside the Asclepieion.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to see the inside, the credit card machine was down and they couldn’t break our 50euros Make sure to have the exact change just in case! Winter time tickets are 3euros per person and I believe during summer it is 6 euros per person.

If you’re wondering what to see in Kos – this is definitely a place worth visiting. It offers interesting facts and information that you can explore on site. A great spot for both tourists and curious visitors. Highly recommended!
Maria S — Google review
Well worth the 10 euro (each for adults) entrance fee. So much history at this place & it is quite large. Beautiful statues and mosaics amongst other artifacts. Lots of written information about each section in Greek and English. Incredibly good job that has been done of restoring this fabulous building.
Toni B — Google review
Visited here last year. Perfectly renovated Roman Villa with interesting archeological remnants. A must place to visit if you are in Kos.
Mete D — Google review
Beautiful place - definitely worth a visit! The interior is stunning and the staff are incredibly friendly. One note: there are pigeon nests, and the amount of droppings is quite an issue. It would be great if the authorities addressed this soon - pigeons really shouldn’t be nesting inside a museum.
K P — Google review
Rather disappointed ..Not worth 10 euros.unkept and Desolate. Needs maintance and care. could have been restored much more attentively and efficiently. Such a shame! : (
Jessica E — Google review
You really get to appreciate the scale of a Roman Villa house. The reconstruction brings scale and helps the imagination understand how Romans inhabited their house. Plenty of interesting information panels and it's fascinating to see restored mosaics and wall decorations that bring immediacy to the written details. If you like Roman houses and want to get a feel of their lifestyle, this museum does an awesome job of doing that.

The Hippocrates Plane Tree is a serene location featuring a large plane tree, where legend has it that the renowned physician Hippocrates taught his students. This ancient site is surrounded by various attractions such as the Gymnasium from the Hellenistic period, Casa Romana, Roman Odeon, Ottoman mosques, and structures from the Italian occupation.
You can enter right from street by the government building by the ocean, with a busstop nearby. It is also close to the old castle and the harbour. There is not much to see but with anything else, it is still always good to witness some history in some form.
Caroline N — Google review
The Hippocrates Tree is a lovely spot to visit in Kos Town. It offers a nice bit of nature and a chance to learn some of the history behind Hippocrates and his connection to the island. Overall, it also gives you a nice overview of the bay area, making it a pleasant stop while exploring the town.
Glen B — Google review
To visit the possible birthplace of modern medical understanding , to take shade under the descendent sibling of that once great tree who play host to the great minds of antiquity can not be fully described! It must be felt..
Adrik C — Google review
It’s a tree. Nothing to tree here I’m afraid. Pointless. Even the ruins around here aren’t that great, not very well maintained. It killed 5 minutes before I found something better.
Chris ( — Google review
To be honest it's a tree. A very old tree. Held up with scaffolding. However it is a quiet shady spot and how could you visit Kos and not go and see it given the world wide medical culture that arose on this spot (allegedly).
Kim H — Google review
Perfect spot, surrounded by some old Greek buildings and the oldest tree lit with light. Fantastic entertainment which totally set the mood. Service was excellent and my sea bass was delicious. Restaurant is more pricey than others in the town but if you are wanting some evening ambiance with a touch of class away from the tourist area this is the place.
Sophie C — Google review
It's not the best best sightseeing experience we've had. The tree is not actually the tree that Hippocrates taught his students as it is only around 500 years old. Although it is thought to be a descendant of the original tree.
Derek B — Google review
Well...the scaffolding ruins the surroundings and tree itself. It's a shame. A must visit of course, but once in a lifetime thing.

Nestled in the heart of Kos, the Altar of Dionysus stands as a remarkable remnant from the 2nd century BCE, showcasing the island's rich mythological and historical tapestry. This ancient site is part of a larger ensemble that includes monuments celebrating Hercules and King Harmylos, alongside Hellenistic treasures like the ancient agora and stadium. Visitors can also explore remnants from various eras, including Roman conservatories and Byzantine basilicas that reflect Kos's diverse cultural heritage.
Smallish ruins with a useful information signboard. Accessible 24/7
Stephen R — Google review
One of the small sites you will find dotted around the town, especially this part of town there is about 7 within a few hundred metres this and the southern part of the Agora are located in a small park.
Dave T — Google review
One needs a lot of imagination to see something that simply is not there! And it's free because it would be hard to convince anyone to pay for a dozen rocks that may, or may not, have been from a temple dedicated to Dionysus. It's only a speculation. I also noticed that most reviewers bundle up the entire Agora with the Altar of Dionysus, so it's not a fair comparison.
Globe T — Google review
There's nothing much left of the altar dedicated to the god of wine. However, the surroundings are nicely maintained, with steps and blocks giving a nice aesthetic to the place.
Lucian M — Google review
Ruins are always special, my 3 stars is representative of the disappointment that the area amd history is not maintained and full of rubbish.
Amanda G — Google review
It’s a nice historical place besides from all the trash laying around. If you’d clean up the site it would be a much better view. I really appreciate the very big head marble statue that just lays calmly in the archeological dig.
Vilgot B — Google review
It needs some TLC overgrown with litter all around even a bike thrown onto the ancient stones. You can still see the ancient site but in its present state it looks like a pile of old stones.. 😞

As far as central squares go, this one doesn't offer much from a landascape perspective. It's got a couple of restaurants around it, as well as a supermarket, but nothing else. It's really just a flat, open space. A fountain or a statue in the center would have been nice.

The area also houses the archaeological Museum of Kos, featuring important sculptures and mosaics from different eras. Additionally, visitors can stroll through ancient lanes with well-preserved carriage ruts from Roman times.
underrated gem. some of the coolest ruins in town, well preserved wall art and a mosaic. you can also see a perfectly defined Roman road. must visit location.
Andy I — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. You can literally walk through an ancient city and see mosaics, murals. Only downside is that it’s not very well preserved. You trust visitors to not destroy or scratch anything, and hope that it does not get worn down by the weather. I hope the city will try to preserve this beautiful place more carefully.
BlueRain — Google review
Beautiful spot to see all kinds of ruins of historical buildings and streets. This was the "main street" a very long time ago. Impressive when you look at today's street and see the difference, how much sand amd dust covered these ruins. In some spots you can still see beautiful mosaic flooring.
Claudio K — Google review
The terrain is easily walkable from the old city of Kos and open to the public. You can admire the archaeological site from up close, such as mosaics, pillars etc. Very beautiful and impressive! Be aware that there is little shade and no information tablets.
Fritzi O — Google review

You have to wonder why this location is no where to be found on Google if you want to visite special places in Kos City. This is a large free to visite archeological digging site. The place is huge. To bad there is not much info on the site itselfs. Still, very beautifull to walk around and amaze yourself about ancient periods.
Peter M — Google review
Stunning archaeological site, easily my favourite in Kos (and there are loads to choose from). It's free to access which is always nice. Look out for some incredible mosaics and and excellent example of a Roman road.
Stephen R — Google review
Incredible place to visit if you are into Ancient Roman & Hellenistic architecture/history! Free to enter, just check the opening times before you visit! I'm not sure why, but despite this being a major ancient archaeological site with alot to see, it doesn't seem well advertised at all & there isn't a huge amount of information about it online, even finding it's name was a bit of a tasj! "Western Archaeological Site" or "Kos ancient gymnasium" don't really allude to how worth the visit this site is! There's actually alot to see here, from the 1700 & 1800 year old roads (on which you can still see grooves worn into the stone by horse & carts nearing 2000 years ago!), to Roman thermae (baths), the gymnasium & it's remaining pillars as well as numerous other accompanying structures! There are still impressively well preserved tile mosaics & art on the walls as well, incredible!

The town is perfect for leisurely strolls to discover quaint cafes, bustling restaurants, and charming shops.
Kos old town is a wonderful bustling town full of activity. There are lots of little touristy type shops to get lost in. The only down side are the restaurants. Although there is a wide selection and the food was terrific there are a few who have staff on the street rather forcefully trying to get you into their restaurants and will actually get in your way and stop you. So be prepared to be forceful back.

Nestled on a picturesque hill just 3 kilometers southwest of Kos Town, the Asclepieion at Kos is an ancient sanctuary that once served as a healing temple and medical school. This remarkable site, dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, boasts a rich history dating back to the 3rd century BC. It is believed to have been founded by Hippocrates, who is often referred to as the father of modern medicine.
I bought an online ticket and walked here from Kos town (30min). On a Dunday morning at 9am I was the first tourist to enter and had the place to myself for some time. The entire compound is surprisingly large with 3 terraces and fantastic views. Signposts explain the major buidlings.
Nina S — Google review
Amazing place where you can walk around for a couple of hours, taking in the beautiful views and the beauty of the architecture of the past . The paths are quite poor in areas, and if you have trouble walking, this could be a problem. As others have said, the price of €15 is rather steep. If they used some of the entrance fee to make it more accessible with better pathways, it would not be as bad. The toilets are really poor and are just before you get to the ticket kiosk.
Derek B — Google review
Stunning history, beautiful to see, not accessible unless you can do many steps! Also €15pp.. But we did and enjoyed.
DK G — Google review
Interesting and nice place to visit. Sadly there is not that much too see and there are not a lot of signs with explanations, those with information are very easily to read, the sentences are a bit too long and complicated. A plus is the free ticket entry for EU students under the age of 25. Accessible by the local bus (1,50€ per ride)
Raphaël — Google review
The site is impressive and truly fascinating. However, the entrance fee is quite high (€15 per person), and more up-to-date information — for example, a 3D reconstruction or visual display in the nearby museum — would make it easier to imagine how the place once looked. The existing information boards feel somewhat outdated and could really use an update. And - the closing time / at least in October / is already at 18:30 !
Blanka A — Google review
We visited the Asclepieion during the week while we had a car rented (€15 per person). Overall, it was great, we both love history and sites like this on our travels, and it was fantastic. Our one, and only criticism, was that information points were few and far between, and the guides often crowded their groups in front of the information points so it didn’t leave a lot of room to read the limited information points there were. It’s worth noting that the on-site cafe, which is the only option for food and drinks on site, was quite expensive for what you got.
Alex H — Google review
There are no words to fully account the true wonder and inspiration of this place , the birth place of modern medicine in the west. The first medical hospital of it's type healed people from all over the world, paupers to kings the wisdoms and healing practices were open to all who required it. A must stop when visting the Isla of medicine.
Adrik C — Google review
Amazing Greek history that don’t want to miss If you have knee problems it would be hard for you to climb but otherwise great views. Put on comfy shoes! You can see Aegean Sea 🌊 and Turkey 🇹🇷 from the highest points. Being a physician to visit Asclepieion is a must! Entrance fee costs 15 € for adults. There is a cafeteria close by if you need to grab something light to drink and eat. We took freshly made orange 🍊 juice.

The Defterdar Mosque is a two-floored mosque from the Ottoman period in Eleftherias Square. It has a dome supported by 12 arches and is still functioning as a mosque, although it is no longer open to the public. The Hanji Hassan (or Loggia) Mosque is also from the Ottoman period and is located behind Hippocrates Plane Tree in Lotzias Square.
Must have been an amazing mosque it's a shame it hasn't been restored after the earthquake.

I saw the photos of the mosk before the earthquake and it looked as an attractive landmark. Now, it looks really dilapidated and abandoned, while being located right at the center of downtown. It would be wise to do something on this point, maybe little restoration..

Sights & Landmarks
The Castle of Kefalos, located in South West Kos, is a medieval fortress with remnants dating back to the Byzantine Era. Despite being destroyed by an earthquake and abandoned in the 16th century, it still showcases Templar architectural style. The castle offers a stunning view of Kamari Bay, Agios Stefanos, and Kasti Island from its court. This historical landmark is a blend of history and natural beauty, making it one of the most visited attractions in the area.
Kefalos in general is missed by tourism because of city of Kos. Wrong. It is a typical small Greek village with local climate. Get there, spend some time, check phenomenal view on the island from the castle. There are also local shops where you can buy local delicacy.
Bartek K — Google review
We visited Kefalos in August 2024 as we were doing a car day trip of Kos! We parked in the main car park in Kefalos and walked up to the castle. The castle is very much a ruin that has been left to ruin even more. There was no included information anywhere about the site, which is why I gave the 4 stars. The best thing about the castle is the view from the top. Really beautiful and you can see for miles. Worth a quick visit if you're there, but i wouldn't go out of your way to see it!
Ben H — Google review
Well, I'm afraid it's a waste of time. Apart from the nice view there's not much to see. If you're in Kefalos anyway or if you're very much into history, have a look. If you're on the Kos town side, don't go for this ruin, just have a look at pictures others have taken for you; there are much better things to see in that part of the island.
Andreas S — Google review
The paltry remains of the medieval fortifications seen here were a part of the fortress that saved the local populace from Turkish raids, especially one in 1457. Possibly building upon a Byzantine initial structure, the Knights Hospitaler enhanced the fortress here to provide safety to the people of the region. People living in Southern Kos would seek refuge within it, just as those in the Central regions would rush to Antimacheia and the Northerners to the capital. Findings suggest it remained in use until the 17th century, perhaps as the base of s local garrison. Nevertheless, it was since left into disrepair and gradually fell into ruins. Its materials were probably used to erect newer constructs. The view is wonderful, there is no ticket, so a short pause could be rewarding. Caution is mandatory as the place is unattended and in ruins.
George S — Google review
A lovely little trip up to the Castle of Kefalos — well worth the 30-minute walk to the top of the hill. That part of the town really comes alive at night, so vivid and full of charm.

James P — Google review
It's not a castle you can go in, more walk around and on top of (beware of the Wells on the top as you could fall in). We didn't book any excursion or have any guide so all knowledge of the Castle was obtained through Google whilst visiting. An excellent view point looking out to the Agean Sea. A good place for panoramic pictures with plenty of eateries just a very short distance walk. .

Located near the Marina, its well worth a visit to see the castle. My only recommendation to those who look after the castle would be some info signs explaining the history of the site

The Tomb of Harmilos, a 3rd century BC Hellenistic tomb complex dedicated to the 12 Olympian Gods and the hero of the Harmyleon, is one of the most impressive historical landmarks in Kastoria. The friendly and informative person who takes care of it won't let you leave without delicious fruit and a good story.
Absolutely amazing experience to visit what is seen as a very important archaeological site in Kos. The tomb of King Harmylos. The chapel above is lovely and is taken care of by a very interesting gentleman. After a visit and a lovely chat we left with a biscuit each. We intend to return when the weather is a little cooler. Don't be disappointed by the lack of , chrome, glass and interactive displays. This is true history.

I love rocks. Unsure who this king is as google searches doesnt not come up with much and most people in the area dont seem to know. Sadly feel like this knowledge is lost in time. However i love historical rocks so was cool to see. Id recommend only going if A) Love Rocks B) Need something to do

Beautiful chapel. Interesting place. The wonderful attendant made this visit worthwhile! the best 10 euros I've ever donated!
J. H — Google review
Depending on who you speak to or which article you read, this tomb is either only dedicated to Harmilos or he is buried 2.5 metres below the room with 6 burial chambers. Regardless of that, what is most important is that you treat the gentleman that looks after the tomb and chapel with great care and respect. He's old and doesn't speak to clearly. But he will offer you a biscuit. Donations are welcomed as well.

Kos Municipal Market, designed by Florestano Di Fausto and Rodolfo Petracco, is a stunning example of mid-century Italian architecture. The exterior is characterized by understated white-washed walls and symmetrical glamour, while the interior is a lively burst of colors and aromas. Visitors can explore an array of fresh spices and indulge in local delicacies like krasotyri, a goat cheese aged in red wine.
This place is excellent for spices, sweets and vegetables. I've been coming every year for 40+ years when come for our annual trip. We bring our spices home

Great for getting any gifts or greek products such as wines, oil, honey and snacks there is so much to choose from inside they've really packed it in there my only downside is they really packed so much inside it can make it difficult to walk round with so many tourists inside too
Shaun E — Google review
Thought we would visit the town market, where in most towns they are full of colour and the smells of fresh produce. Not here though. Trinkets don't taste nice and as for aroma, very busy with hot, sweaty, tourists. Pity, it would have been good in it's day.
Ron H — Google review
Who doesn't like a market especially in Greece ? Not quite the chaos of a street market but still busy and bustling. Plenty of stock , shelves heaving with all sorts of spices and sweet delicacies. Helpful staff and the nagging doubt that you must leave with a bargain for your friends ? Easy to find in Old Kos Town and you leave knowing you can come back tomorrow and still see things you missed yesterday.
Mark G — Google review
Locally called Asda. Buy something here and you get a sunbed. Lovely fresh coffee. Fresh pastries, rolls and anything Carb loaded for a day at the beach. They also have great fruit. You can buy absolutely anything you need here.
Lorraine K — Google review
Small and busy place with a wide assortment of fresh produce and tourist items.
Tony P — Google review
It has absolutely every touristy gift item you could possibly want from herbs and spices to ouzo to olive oil and soap however it is incredibly busy because it so popular with tourists! The whole place is set out to look like many different little shops however it is actually one big shop with two cash desks at the back of the market which means there are very long queues to pay once you've selected what you want. If you dont want to spend time walking round all the little shops in Kos town and old town I would reccomend coming here for a one stop shop with a wait. But if you have time I would suggest going to individual shops and buying things from them as it will be a lot less stressful and a far nicer experience!

Island
Kos is a picturesque island in the Dodecanese archipelago, known for its sandy beaches and rich history showcased through Greek and Roman ruins. The island offers a culinary experience that highlights local products, such as fried Feta cheese wrapped in filo pastry with Kalymnian thyme honey, grilled Talagani cheese with sweet tomato marmalade from Kos, and fresh seafood like Ceviche made from smoked White Tuna by Kalymnian fishermen.
Kos island a great place to visit large number of beaches. Kos town and harbour we'll worth a visit wide variety of boat trips set off from here. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from se veiw hotel is a place we stopped at just on the out skirts of Kadema nice friendly run hotel.
Brian G — Google review
Was over in Kos Island recently for a conference, and I’ve to say, it’s a smashing place altogether. Even with a packed schedule, I managed to steal a bit of time to explore, and I’m glad I did. The island’s full of gorgeous beaches - honestly, you’re never too far from the sea - and Kos Town itself is well worth a wander. The harbour’s lively, with all sorts of boat trips heading out daily, from gentle cruises to a bit more adventure if that’s your thing. There’s no shortage of places to eat or grab a drink, and the whole place has this relaxed, welcoming vibe. What surprised me most, though, was how much history is packed in - from ancient Greek temples and Roman mosaics to the castle at the harbour and the famed tree of Hippocrates. You don’t have to be a history buff to appreciate it - it’s all there in the open, woven into daily life. All in all, Kos has that perfect balance of work, wander, and a bit of wonder - I’d go back in a heartbeat, conference or no conference.

We stopped at Kouros Palace Hotel, which is a 20-minute transfer from the airport. This might sound terrible, but the planes only take off certain times of the day, and with long gaps between The hotel is very clean, and the staff go out of their way to help. Two decent size pools and also a paddling pool. The hotel also offers a great private beach front with its own bar and fresh cooked food. The hotel is situated 2 miles from the nearest town of Mastichari, which also provides food and drink. If your looking to find a hotel to unwind this was well worth its money. The only negative comment that I do have about the hotel was the repetitive evening meal choice. Greek night on the Saturday was outstanding ,with fresh cooked Lamb chops and pork cooked on the hot plates

The Loggia mosque, also known as the Mosque of Gazi Hassan Pasha, was constructed in 1786 and is situated behind the Plane Tree. Originally belonging to the Turkish minority in Kos, it has not been used for prayer for quite some time.
